501-game vet steps
into coaching role
• By Kees Chalmers
THE LEGENDARY Robbie
Timo is finally hanging up his
boots.
The 55-year-old played 30
seasons for Sumner, notching
up an incredible 501 caps.
Timo is definitely not finished
with the club – instead
he’ll be coaching the division 2
Tsunami.
“It’s always exciting, to take
a team and start from scratch,
work our way through the ups
and downs of the season,” he
said.
He has occupied a senior
playing role in the team for a
while, but says coaching is a big
step up.
“It’s more organising and
communicating with the
players, making sure they’re all
good during the week so they
can perform on Saturday.”
Earlier this week, Sumner
announced its senior coaching
staff for 2025.
Gareth D’Almeida will
take the reins once again for
premier side the Wave.
Heathcote
Ward seat
• By Dylan Smits
LAWYER IAN Kearney is
making a bid for the city council
in the October local elections.
The 57-yearold
will vie for
the Heathcote
Ward seat, which
is wide-open as
councillor Sara
Templeton is running
for mayor.
Kearney, who
Ian Kearney
lives in Sumner,
will run as an independent. He
said his sole focus will be ensuring
the voices of Heathcote residents
are heard and the “council
is resolute in enabling solutions to
the community’s concerns”.
Kearney told Bay Harbour News
minimising rates increases and
asset sales will be key issues in the
election campaign.
He said last year’s 9.9% rates
increase was too high.
“The council has an obligation
to make sure every decision it
makes to spend ratepayer money
is looked at through a commonsense
lens.”
The Last Fashion House in Paris
by Renee Ryan
In the heart of occupied WWII Paris, an elegant fashion house
is the unlikely headquarters of a daring resistance network.
Behind closed doors, courageous women vie to save loved
ones and strangers alike from the Nazis in this powerful story of
survival, friendship, and second chances. France, 1942. Once,
Paulette Leblanc spent her days flirting, shopping, and drawing
elegant dresses in her sketchpad. Then German tanks rolled into France,
and a reckless romance turned into deep betrayal. Blaming herself for her
mother’s arrest by the Gestapo, Paulette is sent away to begin a new life in Paris,
working as apprentice to fashion designer Sabine Ballard. But Maison de Ballard
is no ordinary fashion house. While seamstresses create the perfect couture
gowns, clandestine deals and secrets take place out of sight. Mademoiselle
Ballard is head of a vast network of resistance fighters — including Paulette’s
co-worker and friend Nicolle Cadieux — who help escort downed military
men and Jewish families to safety. Soon Paulette is recruited as a spy. Working
as a seamstress by day, gathering information at glamorous parties by night,
Paulette at last has a chance to earn the redemption she craves. But as the SS
closes in, and Nicolle goes missing, Paulette must make life-or-death decisions
about who to trust, who to love, and who to leave behind...
A Language of Dragons by S. F. Williamson
EVERY FIRE STARTS WITH A SINGLE SPARK.
Welcome to Bletchley Park… with dragons. London, 1923. Dragons soar through
the skies and protests erupt on the streets, but Vivien Featherswallow isn’t
worried. She’s going to follow the rules, get an internship studying dragon
languages, and make sure her little sister never has to risk growing up Third
Class. By midnight, Viv has started a civil war. With her parents arrested and
her sister missing, all the safety Viv has worked for is collapsing around her. So
when a lifeline is offered in the form of a mysterious ‘job’, she grabs it. Arriving
at Bletchley Park, Viv discovers that she has been recruited as a codebreaker
helping the war effort – if she succeeds, she and her family can all go home
again. If she doesn’t, they’ll all die. At first Viv believes that her challenge, of
discovering the secrets of a hidden dragon language, is doable. But the more
she learns, the more she realises that the bubble she’s grown up in isn’t as
safe as she thought, and eventually Viv must decide: What war is she really
fighting? An epic, sweeping fantasy with an incredible Dark Academia setting,
a clandestine, slow-burn enemies-to-lovers romance, and an unputdownable
story, filled with twists and turns, betrayals and secret identities, A Language of
Dragons is the unmissable debut of 2025, from an extraordinary new voice.
Club’s court repairs a step
closer, thanks to $20k grant
• By Kees Chalmers
MT PLEASANT Tennis Club is
$20,000 closer to repairing two
of its courts after receiving a
community grant.
The club had considerable
cracks forming on its No 1 and
2 courts, stemming from neighbouring
tree roots.
“If we don’t do something
now, we’re going to get to the
stage where the courts aren’t
usable,” said club captain Colin
McDonald.
He said it would be catastrophic
for the club, as it wouldn’t be
able to cater for its 90 members
with just two of its four courts in
functioning condition.
The club received $20,000
from the New Zealand Community
Trust, but it is still $100,000
short.
It plans on applying for
$65,000 from the Lotteries Commission
in a couple of weeks.
To fix the damage, some of the
tree roots underneath the courts
will need to be removed, which
the club has been told will not
affect the trees in the neighbouring
property.
A new foundation of asphalt
HELPING HAND: Mt Pleasant Tennis Club has received a $20,000 community grant to help
with resurfacing its No 1 and 2 courts, which have been damaged by tree roots (below).
would then be laid over the
ground, with a rubberised
surface on top that would nullify
any future damage.
“If there was a little bit of
growth or movement under the
ground, there won’t be any effect
on the court,” said McDonald.
Mt Pleasant will recruit
Circuit Asphalt to carry out the
repairs.
While the primary focus is
the courts themselves, new
posts and nets will be needed
for the renovated surface, said
McDonald.
The current fencing is serviceable
for now, but will also need
attention in the future.
The major benefit the new
courts will have for the club is
attracting new members.
“Word will get around, and
people will say ‘let’s go to Mt
Pleasant tennis because they’ve
got new courts, and they look
amazing’,” he said.
The club hopes to have the new
courts up and running by the
end of October, in time for next
season.
NEWS 3
In Brief
RAPID RESPONSE
PREVENTS FIRE DAMAGE
Quick reactions from neighbours
and firefighters stopped
two potential house fires.
Sumner firefighters arrived at
a Clifton residence at 3.21pm
last Wednesday following a
neighbour’s call reporting smoke
coming from the house. A pot had
been left on the stove which set off
fire alarms. Firefighters opened the
windows and vented the house.
Also last Wednesday, at 7.32pm
firefighters responded to a smokelogged
house in Redcliffs after
a toilet roll left on a light fitting
caught fire. The smouldering
roll omitted a substantial
amount of smoke but the fire
was mostly extinguished before
firefighters finished it off with
CO2 extinguishers. Sumner chief
fire officer Daryl Sayer said the
two incidents were a reminder for
people to be careful with cooking
equipment and leaving unattended
items near heat sources.
MORGAN CLUB’S LONGEST
SERVING MEMBER
In last week’s issue it was
incorrectly reported Peter
Midgley was the longest serving
longest serving member; Peter
is the oldest member. The
information was supplied to Bay
Rates, asset sales
key election
issues – Kearney
• From page 1
Kearney, who specialises in
commercial and property law,
said it was too early in
the campaign to say what
projects or services the city
council might be spending too
much on.
“I do come from a commercial
background, so I have a decent
understanding to look at
financial issues like this.”
A self described centrist,
Kearney is not for or against
asset sales but said it could help
reduce rates increases.
Selling, or partially selling,
city council assets like the
Christchurch Airport and Lyttelton
Port Company has long
been a dividing issue between
left and right leaning councillors.
“It’s going to be a really important
debate. You’re going to want
to look into it and get ratepayers
views on it. If ratepayers are adamantly
opposed to asset sales,
that needs to be considered,” he
said.
Kearney promises “to bring
“forward-thinking and “responsive
leadership” if elected.
“As a long-time Heathcote
resident, I deeply understand
the area’s unique challenges,
especially the growing risks
posed by climate change – from
flooding and fires to rising sea
levels.”
Kearney said the city council
must invest in sustainable infrastructure
to protect the area and
prepare for the future.
“We need to be thinking
long-term to protect our environment,
homes, businesses, and
essential infrastructure from the
impacts that climate change will
bring, with a particular focus
on the challenges presented as a
coastal community.”
Kearney said his 25 years
of experience as a lawyer will
bring a wealth of legal and
commercial expertise to his
candidacy.
He has previously served
on the Sumner Volunteer Fire
Brigade, Citizens Advice Bureau
and numerous other charitable
organisations.
Consistency goal for Timo
in new coaching role
• From page 1
D’Almeida will be joined by his
usual supporting cast, Ben Gorst
as forwards coach and Josh Toy
as backs coach.
The Tsunami has an entirely
new coaching crew, with Timo
stepping into the head coach role,
Pete Rintoul taking the forwards
and Willy Saukaru the backs.
Former colts Storm assistant
coach Mike Tamati has been
promoted to head coach, with
Lawrence Babe assisting him.
While the boots are firmly
hung up, Timo said he won’t turn
down the chance to lace them up
again if the team needs him.
“If we’re short I’ll slip them on,
but hopefully just coaching.”
The Te Aratai College schoolteacher
said players rotating
made consistency difficult to
maintain towards last season’s
finals. This year, he hopes to
establish a core group of players
that will come in, week in and
week out.
The Tsunami is already into
pre-season and aim to advance
past the semi-finals and win the
division 2 competition.
“There’s a lot of excitement
growing in the squad, so I’m
looking forward to seeing them
out on the paddock,” Timo said.
Her artworks are highly detailed
and tend to include nature and
animals.
The mural incorporates the
recreation centre’s braided
artist Amber Moke to visualise
unity. The braiding illustrates the
weaving together of elements and
people to create a safe space for
Said recreation centre chairperson
Wendy McKay: “Our
vision for the facility is to create a
space where Ōhinehou Lyttelton
Cemetery returned to
iwi after long struggle
RETURNED: The urupā which
will be handed back to iwi
and one of the graves at the
historic site. PHOTOS: CCC
AN HISTORIC urupā in Purau
can now finally be handed back
to local iwi following more than a
century of talks.
In an historic decision, community
leaders voted unanimously
to revoke the reserve status of the
cemetery site at 177 Pūrau Ave,
and return it to Te Hapū o Ngāti
Wheke.
Submissions were heard ahead
of the vote during a Te Pātaka
o Rākaihautū Banks Peninsula
Community Board meeting at on
Monday.
According to the city council’s
report, the site was part of a
larger nine acre block of land,
established in 1870 as a “Māori
Reserve”.
The land was sold into private
ownership in 1914 and later subdivided
in 1950.
In the ensuing subdivision
process with government
officials, the cemetery was not
officially recognised, despite the
landowners’ desire for it to be.
“The incongruity of that action
was not recognised at the time
and has persisted through history
to this day,” the report said.
More than 96% of the 378
submissions were in favour of
the proposed transfer, with 2.3%
against and 1.1% unsure.
Banks Peninsula Ward councillor
Tyrone Fields said it was a
“unique privilege” to be part of
such a significant decision.
“There’s been no shortage of
consultation for the community
on this.
“A hundred years, give or take,
of bureaucratic mis-steps, misunderstandings,
misrepresentation,
or just missing the point, that’s
caused a lot of heartache and
heartbreak.
“Now the bureaucratic stars are
aligned and finally get to a stage
where we can address some of the
errors of the past.” – RNZ
Korako’s
ride for
charity
reaches
finish line
NUK KORAKO has completed his
1450km bike ride from Cape Reinga
to Wellington.
The effort has raised more than
$13,000 for the Cholomondeley Children’s
Centre as part of the charity’s
centennial celebrations.
The Environment Canterbury
councillor and former National MP
reached Parliament on Saturday and
was greeted by politicians.
It took 14 days for Korako and
Cholmondeley chair Nettles Lamont
to complete their ride.
Korako is the patron of
Cholmondeley and has a deep
personal connection to the home.
His mother died of a heart attack
when he was 10, leaving his father to
contend with raising nine children.
To offer his father some time
to grieve and plan, Korako and
five of his sisters were sent to
Cholmondeley for a month.
WW2 Spitfire pilot marks
100th birthday milestone
• By Geoff Sloan
AS A BOY, OWEN Hunter saw
his very first aircraft, a Vickers
Vincent biplane flying over his
family farm at Church Bay.
His love of aviation grew
from there and he joined the
Royal New Zealand Air Force,
undergoing pilot training at the
Wigram and Woodbourne bases,
before heading to Europe in 1944
to fight in World War 2.
The following year he joined
No 485 (NZ) Squadron flying
Spitfires from airfields in the
Netherlands and Germany during
the final days of the war.
Widely recognised as one of
New Zealand’s few remaining
World War 2 fighter pilots, Owen
celebrated his 100th birthday
milestone with his family in
Christchurch last week.
The former Spitfire pilot was
keen to reunite with some of the
aircraft he flew during his extensive
military service.
He got that chance at the Air
Force Museum of New Zealand
before his big day.
AFMNZ spokesman David
King said it was an honour to host
ACE: Owen Hunter with a book celebrating the history of
No 485 Squadron.
Owen, who he said was “highlylikely”
to be New Zealand’s last
wartime fighter pilot.
King said Owen enjoyed getting
close to the museum’s Tiger Moth,
Harvard, Spitfire, Oxford, Vampire
and Devon aircraft, all types
he had flown during his career.
The New Zealand Squadron was
formed in England in 1941, flying
Spitfires under the command of
the RAF.
The celebrated fighter unit flew
10,717 missions, claiming 63 enemy
aircraft destroyed before being
disbanded in August 1945.
a Hawker Tempest
conversion course in 1945.
After the war Owen returned
to civilian life as a builder, before
spotting an ad to re-enlist in the
RAF.
He didn’t hesitate to sign up
again and was soon posted back
to Germany where he flew fighters
and “any other aircraft I could
get my his hands on” over Europe
again.
“I could never get enough of
flying,’’ he said.
He served in the RAF for about
40 years.
When his flying days finally
ended, Owen retrained as an RAF
air traffic controller before retiring.
Naval Point Club Lyttelton recently hosted an Environment Canterbury water safety event which attracted
hundreds of people eager to get on the water. The harbourmaster team supervised those who wanted to try
kayaking, paddleboarding, and jet skiing in the harbour. North Canterbury Coast Guard was also on hand to ensure
everyone’s safety. The Rock FM provided a boatie breakfast, while Fisheries New Zealand officers were there to hand
out shellfish shucking and measuring tools and educating those who fish in local waters. On land, harbourmaster
staff demonstrated how to properly use floatation devices and volunteers at Naval Point Club offered testing in
their floatation tank. The event brought together community groups for a fun and educational day, promoting both
water recreation and safety awareness.
surf life saving
SURF: Hugo
competing in
the board race
at last year’s
Canterbury
champs.
in the blood
• By Kees Chalmers
A SHARED love of the ocean,
sport and fitness has created a
special bond between father-andson
surf lifesavers.
Daniel Shields, 54, passed on
his passion for the outdoors to
Hugo, 16, at an early age.
“I think it’s fantastic. Having
a shared thing that we can both
enjoy and watch each other do
has been a really good thing for
us,” Shields said.
He juggles patrols and training
with running highly successful
business Barrys Bay Cheese with
wife Amy.
“We do eat a lot of cheese, but
I don’t think it helps much,” he
said jokingly.
Shields and Hugo are fresh
from competing for Taylors
Mistake in the eastern regional
championships in Mt Maunganui
at the weekend.
The carnival sees the best surf
life savers in the country take
FAMILY: Hugo and Daniel Shields got the rare opportunity
to race together in the men’s open double ski at last year’s
Southern regional championships.
each other on in a curtain raiser
for the nationals in Gisborne in
March.
The club finished eighth overall,
with Dylan Monk winning
the U19 male ski and double ski
with partner Tiago Chamberlain.
Other standout performers
were Natasha MacGibbon, who
won the U19 female ski, and
Thomas MacGibbon, who won
the open male ski.
Shields finished third overall
in the 50-54 age group, was
second in the ski race and third
in the iron.
It followed a successful
weekend prior for both the
Shields and the club, with
Taylors Mistake taking out top
overall club in dominant fashion
at the Canterbury regional
championships.
Hugo contributed with first
place finishes in the U17 board
and ski races.
Shields took home a second-place
finish in the masters
male ski race and, being the only
competitor in the ironman, won
gold.
Sumner finished third in the
Canterbury champs and 27th at
the Eastern champs.
Shields said his club’s performance
was a culmination of
the past few seasons, where the
team’s culture and ability has
been building.
“It was a real buzz to see the
team performing strongly across
so many disciplines.”
Shield’s surf life saving journey
started 30 years ago. He joined
Waimairi Surf Life Saving Club
as a university student before
heading overseas.
Throughout the years he has
maintained his fitness, taking
part in multiple Coast to Coasts.
Last year, he was second in the
over 50s in the Molokai ocean
race in Hawaii, a 55km ski paddle
between Molokai and Oahu.
Three years ago, Shields came
back to surf, this time with
his son.
“I gave it ago and enjoyed it, so
I’ve just kept going,” said Hugo.
He and Hugo agreed the
combination of community and
sport is what the two love about
surf life saving.
“We both love the water, and
no two days are the same at Taylors
Mistake, we get to go over
that hill to that beautiful beach
every day, and every day is a new
experience,” said Shields.
The pair train six to eight
times a week, with each session
lasting one to two hours.
The competitive aspect of life
saving is beneficial to patrol
work as well.
“Fit, healthy, competent athletes
make better surf life savers.
“It gives us confidence in the
water, confidence in big surf,
and you learn so much about the
water conditions while you’re
racing that you can transfer to
educating people on the beach,”
Shields said.
Club marks milestone
with costumed fun
Redcliffs Bowling Club celebrated their centennial in style on Saturday with bowlers
and their families asked to attend festivities dressed as a bowler from 1925 to mark the
occasion. In the afternoon, guests watched the club championship singles finals and
enoyed an afternoon tea.
The Way
We Were
How far would you go for a
public toilet?
In Alan Jones’ case, it was
30ft (9m) up a pole.
In February 1970, Jones spent
a week on a mounted platform
atop a pole to fundraise for
toilets for Leeston Park.
The 7ft (0.65m) square
platform had power and lights
strung up to it, and some basic
amenities.
“He will be well looked after
by local residents,” The Press
reported.
“He will have a portable
television set . . . a radio, bed,
books, a tarpaulin over the
platform’s frame, and will
receive a hot meal each day.
“In case Mr Jones gets
bored, an open-air dance on
Saturday, a lolly scramble on
Sunday, and a fireworks display
during the week will keep him
entertained.”
Jones was treasurer of the
park’s committee.
1970 – THE POLE SIT
The 24-year-old salesperson
and bar tender reportedly
sacrificed a week of his holidays
for the demonstration.
He started his sit at 10.30pm
on Saturday, February 7. Rain
and blustery winds made his
first night the most difficult,
before the weather grew kinder.
After three days and four
nights, he had raised $720
towards his $1000 goal.
Selwyn Stories said Jones
spent 166 hours up the pole and
received 2000 visitors. By the
end of the week he had raised
$1300.
Jones descended in time for
the open-air dance to celebrate
his achievement.
A donation box and a plan
of the proposed toilet facilities
had been left at the base of the
pole throughout the sit.
The question of what Jones
did with his own waste while
he was up the pole was not
reported.
ADVERTISING FEATURE
Perfectly positioned on the highly
desired and sought after lower slopes
of Clifton Hill, is this wonderful home
designed by well-known Christchurch
Architect “Stewart Ross”. The situation
of the home provides a strong sense of
connection to the beach and sea. The
early homes on Clifton had the best views
and this is no exception – breathtaking
vistas of Sumner beach through to
Scarborough, Pegasus Bay and the
surrounding hillsides. Meticulously
built with beautiful timber detailing,
throughout, well maintained and much
loved, with many happy memories made
by the original owners over the past 40
years.
Thoughtfully designed, with ample
space to make the most of its natural
surroundings, this home is truly a one-ofa-kind
private and peaceful retreat, ideal
for large or extended families. Generous
in size, built over 3 stories and spread
over 5 levels, with all rooms providing a
different view at every turn. Each main
level has direct access to the outside. The
living area features a log fire and
doors opening to an expansive deck and
patio, both maximising the established
lush gardens - a peaceful haven.
The family dining area with extensive
vistas has a large up to the minute, wellappointed
kitchen including a walk-in
pantry brilliant storage and quality
appliances, it really is the hub of this
home. Complete with the perfect balance
of bedrooms and bathrooms this oftenadmired
property is must-see.
The established, extensively planted
gardens including raised vegetable beds,
green house and a large area of flat lawn
at the bottom of the section, means that
everyone in your family will be well
catered for.
Easy drive on access with two extralarge
garages. The main garage at the top
of the property has internal access and is
complemented by attic storage. With the
two garages, there is capacity for six off
street parks.
The location is perfect in close
proximity to the Zig Zag track it is an
easy walk to the beach and village to
enjoy all things that Sumner has to offer.
A truly private sanctuary for your next
