Kite Day gears up for
PHOTO: GEOFF SLOAN
• By Jack Ward
MORE RUBBISH bins will
be available and shared
transportation encouraged at
Kite Day on Saturday, to avoid
a repeat of last year’s scenes.
City council events and arts
manager Lucy Blackmore
said the council had learnt
from last year, when waste
disposal and illegal parking
were issues.
“This year, we have increased
our temporary bin provisions
in response to the feedback.
“Staff on site will be
monitoring the bin levels
throughout the event to ensure
they are emptied before they
smooth sailing
reach capacity,” she said.
Twelve temporary rubbish
bins had been put in place
last year, but were soon
overflowing as an estimated
8000 people converged on the
eastern suburb.
Parking was also at a
premium, with some resorting
to illegal parking tactics.
Blackmore said the city
council had a list of tips for
getting to the event, which
runs from noon-4pm,
including taking public
transport, using active
transport (such as biking and
walking), and carpooling.
House on
Waitangi Day
KATE SHEPPARD House – the
Ilam villa which was once the
home of suffragist Kate Sheppard
– will be opening its doors to the
public for free on Waitangi Day.
But people will need to be quick
to book their spot. Although entry
will be free bookings are essential
as places are limited, and casual
visitors to the house on February
6 cannot be admitted.
The house is otherwise open
Wednesdays to Sundays 10am-
4pm.
The historic property is part of
a network of places around the
country cared for by Heritage
New Zealand.
Visitors will be able to explore
the house where Sheppard led a
campaign of national and international
activism, planned strategies
with leading feminists of the time,
and pasted together the pages
of the monster 31,872-signature
women’s suffrage petition.
Visitors can also stroll through
the garden where Sheppard
received the telegram confirming
that women had been granted the
vote in September 1893.
Hayley’s star is rising
VIOLINIST HAYLEY Jiang is
preparing for the next high note
of her musical journey.
The talented 15-year-old will
perform a violin solo at Mitre10
Sparks, accompanied by concert
headliners the Christchurch
Symphony Orchestra.
The free concert on Saturday,
February 8 is expected to attract
up to 20,000. It will be the biggest
audience the Rangi Ruru
Girls’ School student has ever
performed for.
“I am looking forward to the
energy of the audience, and
the feeling of being up there on
stage,” Hayley says.
“I will be playing Vivaldi’s
Spring Movement 1 from Four
Seasons. I love how it’s so iconic,
and how so many musicians I
look up to have played it.”
Hayley has been playing the
violin since she was six.
At 13, she was selected
for a CSO youth ensemble
programme, Virtuosi, and for
the New Zealand Secondary
Schools’ Symphony Orchestra.
Last year, she was again
accepted into the NZSSSO
programme and added the New
Zealand Symphony Orchestra
National Youth Orchestra to her
list of accomplishments.
Hayley’s musical dream is
to perform on world-class
stages and with professional
CONCERT: Talented
violinist Hayley Jiang,
biggest audience yet
– an estimated 20,000
Saturday, February 8.
orchestras overseas.
“What I love most about
playing the violin is when I pick
up my instrument, it feels like
I’m in my own world, where
everything is flowing out of my
body and soul.”
• Mitre10 Sparks runs
from 6.30-9.40pm at
North Hagley Park. The
free, all-ages concert starts
at 7pm and finishes with
fireworks 9.30pm.
“By encouraging use of these
transport modes, we aim to
reduce the amount of traffic
and congestion, the number of
cars needing car parking, and
the carbon emissions,” said
Blackmore.
“The north ramp car park will
be open, and on-street parking
is available by the beach and
township. The south ramp car
park is closed to cars, except
those displaying a mobility pass,
for the event.”
Youth Alive Trust manager
James Ridpath said last year was
the first time the trust had run
out of kites, selling 500. It will
have about 700 for sale this year.
The New Brighton Volunteer
Fire Brigade will be running a
car wash at the corner of Shaw
and Hawke Sts from 10am-2pm,
to raise funds ahead of the
Firefighter Sky Tower Challenge
in Auckland in May, when
firefighters will run up the 1103
steps of the Sky Tower in full
firefighting equipment to raise
funds for leukaemia and blood
cancer research.
Ridpath said Kite Day was a
reminder of the benefits of getting
out and about.
“You can have fun basically
for free on our doorstep.”
Saturday’s weather forecast
is rain clearing to fine, with
easterlies and a high of 20 and a
low of 15.
Competitive
surf life saving
SURF: Hugo
competing in
the board race
at last year’s
Canterbury
champs.
in the blood
• By Kees Chalmers
A SHARED love of the ocean,
sport and fitness has created a
special bond between fatherand-son
surf lifesavers.
Daniel Shields, 54, passed on
his passion for the outdoors to
Hugo, 16, at an early age.
“I think it’s fantastic. Having
a shared thing that we can both
enjoy and watch each other do
has been a really good thing for
us,” Shields said.
He juggles patrols and training
with running highly successful
business Barrys Bay Cheese with
wife Amy.
“We do eat a lot of cheese, but
I don’t think it helps much,” he
said jokingly.
Shields and Hugo are fresh
from competing with Taylors
Mistake Surf Life Saving Club in
the eastern regional championships
in Mt Maunganui at the
weekend.
The competition sees the best
surf life savers in the country
take each other on in a curtain
FAMILY: Hugo and Daniel Shields got the rare opportunity
to race together in the men’s open double ski at last year’s
Southern Regional Championships.
raiser for the nationals in March.
The club finished eighth overall,
with Dylan Monk winning
the U19 male ski and double ski
with partner Tiago Chamberlain.
Other standout performers
were Natasha MacGibbon, who
won the U19 female ski, and
Thomas MacGibbon, who won
the open male ski.
Shields finished third overall
in the 50-54 age group, was
second in the ski race and third
in the iron.
It followed a successful weekend
prior for both the Shields
and the club, with Taylors
Mistake taking out top overall
club in dominant fashion at the
Canterbury regional championships.
Hugo contributed with first
place finishes in the U17 board
and ski races.
Shields took home a secondplace
finish in the masters male
ski race and, being the only competitor
in the ironman, won gold.
Sumner Surf Life Saving Club
finished third in the Canterbury
champs and 27th at the Eastern
champs.
Shields said his club’s performance
was a culmination of
the past few seasons, where the
team’s culture and ability has
been building.
“It was a real buzz to see the
team performing strongly across
so many disciplines.”
Shield’s surf life saving journey
started 30 years ago. He joined
Waimairi Surf Life Saving Club
as a university student and
worked there for 12 months
before heading overseas.
Throughout the years he has
maintained his passion for fitness,
taking part in multiple
Coast to Coasts. Last year, he
was second in the over 50s in the
Molokai ocean race in Hawaii,
a 55km ski paddle between
Molokai and Oahu.
Three years ago, Shields came
back to surf, this time with his
son.
“I gave it ago and enjoyed it, so
I’ve just kept going,” said Hugo.
Shields said what keeps him
committed is the satisfaction of
still being able to use the hardearned
skills that come with the
sport, and the infinite room to
improve.
He and Hugo agreed the
combination of community and
sport is what the two love about
surf life saving.
“We both love the water, and
no two days are the same at Taylors
Mistake, we get to go over
that hill to that beautiful beach
every day, and every day is a new
experience,” said Shields.
The pair train six to eight
times a week, with each session
lasting one to two hours.
The competitive aspect of life
saving is beneficial to patrol
work as well.
“Fit, healthy, competent athletes
make better surf life savers.
“It gives us confidence in the
water, confidence in big surf,
and you learn so much about the
water conditions while you’re
racing that you can transfer to
educating people on the beach,”
Shields said.
