of a Roman speakeasy. This underground club is

open until late, not only making it the ideal venue

for a discreet nightcap but also a chic after-hours

spot where you can waste time away, sipping on a

Tiramisù (which translates as “lift me up”) is the most well known Italian dessert in

the world. It was born in the 19th century in Treviso, a city located in the northeast

of Italy. Legends say that was created by the owner of a restaurant who wanted to

offer to her clients an aphrodisiac and invigorating dessert. Tiramisù is made up of

ingredients such as eggs, sugar, savoiardi biscuits, mascarpone, coffee and cocoa.

Today, tiramisù is an essential part of almost nearly every restauraunt menù in

MUST-SEE

Passetto Di Borgo:

The Mysterious Escape Route Of The Popes

p

Denisa Savin

Passetto di Borgo

Piazza della Città Leonina

THE NATIONAL ROMAN MUSEUM

What is the Passetto di Borgo?

Originally built for defense, the Passetto di Borgo is a secret passage linking the Vatican to

Castel Sant’Angelo. Once known as “Er Coridore de Borgo,” it forms part of the Vatican Walls,

stretching along Via dei Corridori and Via Borgo Sant’Angelo before ending inside the castle.

The earliest structure dates back to 547 AD, when a modest fortification was built to protect

against barbarian invasions. The modest construction, irregular in layout, was made with large

roughly squared blocks, some of which are still visible near Porta Castello.

In 852, Pope Leo IV reinforced it with a 5-meter-high defensive wall, which later evolved into

the Passetto. Over the centuries, various popes modified and expanded it.

The Passetto’s purpose was to control the lower area of the Borgo and suppress potential

uprisings, thanks to its elevated position from which arrows could be easily shot or firearms

fired. It also served to secretly imprison high-profile prisoners whose presence in the feared

papal jails should remain unknown.

Most importantly, the Passetto provided a quick escape route for the pope, who could take

hideaway in the well-protected walls of Castel Sant’Angelo in case of enemy attack or

assassination attempts.

Visiting the Passetto

The guided tour covers the entire passage, between two levels:

• Upper level: an open-air walkway with panoramic views of Rome.

• Lower level: a covered “secret” corridor that allowed popes to move safely from the

Vatican to the fortress.

Now, visitors can retrace centuries of history along this once-hidden escape route.

Daytime entry to Passetto + Bastione San Marco only: + €12 for the mandatory

1-hour guided tour

Integrated daytime entry to Passetto + Castel Sant’Angelo: €16 + €10 for the 1-hour

guided tour

Special nighttime entry: €4 + €24 for the guided tour

www.museiitaliani.it

...................................................................................

After years of closure, the Passetto di Borgo

was reopened to both Romans and tourists

on December 23, 2024

Now part of a permanent program of guided

tours, including special evening visits, the

entire stretch of the Passetto—from the

Torre del Mascherino at Piazza della Città

Leonina to the Bastione San Marco at Castel

Sant’Angelo—is once again accessible.

Il Marchese unites the best of two worlds: a bar with

elegant French salon accents and pompous chandeliers,

and a restaurant with the coziness of a Roman trattoria.

But it’s not just the décor that’s impressive. When you

walk into Il Marchese you step inside Europe’s first Amaro

bar with more than 500 different Amaro labels.

During the recent G20 in Rome, Il Marchese had two

special customers: the American First Lady Jill Biden

and the French Première Dame Brigitte Macron. The two

ladies said they were “delighted with the lovely welcome”,

complimenting the staff and the quality of the products.

ll Marchese takes its name from the Marchese del Grillo,

a symbol of Rome’s inimitable spirit– a true gentleman,

but always inclined to irony, a lover of tradition, but also

appreciated by those who come from different cultures.

Here, with Chef Daniele Roppo, you’re sure to have a

fantastic dining experience. The culinary philosophy has strong Roman roots and is inspired

by traditional recipes that are lightened according to a contemporary taste, also offering

vegetarian dishes. Quality is always a priority. Ingredients are purchased from local producers.

The amaro and cocktail bar at Il Marchese pays tribute to the elegance of 19th-century

French aristocracy, with precious stuccoes, wallpapers, and velvets. The cocktails here are

perfect for an after-dinner drink or as an aperitif. Each signature drink is crafted with premium

ingredients expertly mixed. Leading the cocktail bar is Fabrizio Valeriani, a bartender with

extensive experience.

Les Etoiles Rooftop Cocktail Bar is the open rooftop terrace

of the Hotel Atlante Star that offers a truly spectacular

panoramic view of Rome encompassing three hundred and

sixty degrees of terracotta rooftops and some of the city’s

most impressive monuments. If you’re looking for a light

lunch or a dinner, an aperitivo or an after dinner cocktail, you

couldn’t find a location more romantic or luxurious.

The view takes in Castel Sant’Angelo, the Vittorio Emanuele

monument, the forested Gianicolo hill, Villa Borghese, the

spidery gazometro, and the best view I’ve ever seen of the

facade and dome of St. Peter’s Basilica.

Relax on couches or under their spacious umbrellas and

enjoy a cocktail alongside an array of delectable finger

foods. Choose from a variety of cooked and raw food,

marinated salmon, yummy club sandwiches, buffalo

mozzarella, hamburgers, rich salads and more, all finished

off with fresh fruit.

The aperitif is served every day between 5pm and 9pm. There is a fixed formula at 45 euros

which includes a drink (cocktail or glass of wine) accompanied by a selection of finger food,

also available for vegans and celiacs.

I suggest going in the evening so you can enjoy the cool breeze above the tumult of the city

below, sip a cocktail and watch the sun’s last rays warm the ancient stones of the eternal city.

Greenwich Village, New York. Alexanderplatz is underground,

As you descend the stairs into the cavernous interior, you’d

be forgiven for forgetting you were near the Vatican in the heart of Rome.

Many of the most prominent jazz, blues, soul, music artists have performed at the

SALVADOR DALÍ TAKES CENTER STAGE AT THE MUSEO STORICO DELLA FANTERIA IN ROME

Rome’s Museo Storico della Fanteria is

hosting an exciting new exhibition that

brings the genius of Salvador Dalí to life.

Running until July 27th, this exhibition offers

a comprehensive look into the surrealist’s life

and work.

The exhibition brings together around

80 works by Dalí, ranging from his early

sketches to what the Museo describes as the

“dreamlike experiments” of his later years.

The carefully curated collection spans Dalí’s

entire career, highlighting the evolution of his

artistic vision and offering a deep dive into

the surrealism that made him one of the most

iconic artists of the 20th century.

The exhibition places a particular focus on

Dalí’s exploration of Dante Alighieri’s “Divine

Comedy”. Entire rooms have been dedicated

to Dalí’s interpretation of the three realms of

the work: Inferno, Purgatorio, and Paradiso.

Dalí’s surrealism is present throughout the

entire exhibit, not just in Dali’s work but with

supplemental work from artists inspired by

Dali’s legacy, including Michel Henricot, Joan

Miró, and Fabrizio Clerici.

In addition to his famous surrealist works, the

exhibition includes various products which he

collaborated on that shed light on his carefully

crafted persona as an artist, which he used as

part of his marketing strategy to cultivate his

larger-than-life image.

The exhibition also features various products

which Dali helped to design, including

perfume bottles, playing cards, candy, and

liqueur bottles, many of which have now

become collector’s items. His interaction with

commerce was something that would go on to

inspire artists like Andy Warhol, and serve as

extensions of his notable artistic style.

Also in the exhibit are the works that reflect

Dalí’s relationship with Spanish poet Federico

García Lorca, including drawings by Lorca

and photographs of the two artists. Lorca’s

influence played a significant role in shaping

Dalí’s art. Encounters between the two would

prove to be incredibly influential in Dali’s life,

which the exhibition highlights.
