Baby on the way? 5 ways to prepare firsttime

Welcoming a baby to the

family can be an exciting time,

but it also impacts the existing

family dynamic and lifestyle.

First-time siblings may be

overwhelmed and confused

by these sudden changes that

come with a new baby.

However, parents can help

soon-to-be siblings get ready

for the changes ahead. Check

out these five tips that can help

children prepare for becoming

first-time siblings.

1. Set expectations.

Communication is key to

setting first-time siblings at

ease. Begin by explaining the

care newborns need. Make

sure to emphasize that just

because the baby needs more

time and attention doesn’t

mean that an older child is being

replaced.

Also, discuss what it means

to be an older sibling and how

they can help take care of the

baby. By setting these expectations,

your older child will

be better prepared for the adjustments

and responsibilities

that come with the arrival of a

younger sibling.

2. Practice gentle touch.

It’s important to teach

young children how fragile

newborns are, especially if

your older child is around a

year old. Practice gentle touch

with your child so they know

how to handle their sibling

with care.

A great way to practice gentle

touch is with interactive

play with a baby doll. One

recommended option is BABY

bond between siblings.

Children around age 3 and

older can practice with a baby

doll.

Once the baby arrives, encourage

your older child to

take care of their doll while you

take care of the baby. When

your newborn needs a diaper

change, your older child can

change their baby doll’s diaper.

By including them in these

activities and routines, you can

foster a sense of responsibility

and love between siblings.

4. Encourage siblings to

participate in the baby’s

milestones.

Early detection and management of feline diabetes:

What cat owners need to know

In an effort to help cat owners make

sure their beloved pets are both happy

and healthy, Elanco is working to raise

awareness about an often-overlooked

disease — feline diabetes.

With approximately 600,000 cats

in the U.S. will be diagnosed with diabetes

in their lifetime, and cases are

on the rise. One innovative treatment

is changing the landscape of feline diabetes

care: Bexacat (bexagliflozin tablets).

Feline diabetes occurs when a cat’s

body is unable to regulate sugar (glucose)

in its blood due to insulin resistance

and/or insulin deficiency.

Glucose is an important fuel source

for cells in the body, and insulin (a hormone

from the pancreas) is responsible

for driving glucose into the cells to

be utilized for energy. Without insulin,

glucose is unable to enter cells, and the

body is forced to use fat and muscle

for energy to avoid starvation despite

increasingly high blood glucose levels.

Over time, this cycle of “starvation

amidst plenty” leads to weight loss, despite

an excessive appetite, increased

thirst and urination, lethargy, and a

life-threatening buildup of acids in the

blood from excessive fat breakdown

called ketoacidosis.

Unfortunately, feline diabetes is a

chronic illness that requires lifelong

medical care and owner education to

prevent complications and ensure a

good quality of life.

For pet owners, receiving a feline

diabetes diagnosis can feel scary and

Memorial and commemorative

trees may be donated through the

Friends of Our Parks Foundation

to be planted in one of the City’s

parks. The trees are designated

with a plaque mounted on a small

metal pole. Flowering cherry,

redbud, plum, crabapple, fringe

trees, live oaks and camellias

are popular choices. Suitable

for commemorating any special

occasion or as a living memorial

to a loved one, your gift will also

help beautify our parks and

facilities for many years to come.

While donors can request

specific species and locations,

some species are not suitable

for all locations, and some parks

or certain locations within a

park may not be available to

accommodate additional trees

at this time. Currently, we are

not accepting donations at Lake

Ella, Cascades, Oven and McCord

Parks, but we do have a waiting

list for future needs at these

Spend quality time with your pooch at a dog park where he can play off-leash and meet new furry

friends.

• Bradfordville Dog Park, located at 6808 Beech Ridge Trail, is Leon County’s biggest dog park, with

over 13 acres of play space for small and large dogs alike.

• Lee Vause Dog Park — This dog park at 6024 Old Bainbridge Road is a 1.5-acre puppy playground

with space for both small and big dogs. Amenities for furry friends and their humans include a

drinking fountain with a dog water bowl attachment, a log tunnel, jumping hoops and benches.

• San Luis Mission Dog Park—Located at 1313 San Luis Road, San Luis Mission Dog Park is home

to a large fenced-in area for dogs of all sizes. Parking is near the restroom and play area. This

spot also offers dog-friendly trails that lead behind the park.

• All Saints Dog Park—Located at 810 S Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, this is a smaller dog

park with a fenced-in area where big and small dogs can play and benches where owners can

sit and chat.

• Tom Brown Dog Park—This dog park is located at 501 Easterwood Drive and features two

fenced-in areas for pups to play in, one for small dogs and one for bigger dogs. The park also has

several water stations for canines, hand sanitizer stations and benches.

DINE OUT WITH YOUR DOG

Tallahassee’s mild weather helps keep pet-friendly restaurant patios open most of the year. From

breakfast to dinner, these restaurants welcome four-legged guests at designated outdoor seating.

Here are a couple of four-legged foodie-approved dining establishments:

• Uptown Cafe serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner daily. Be sure to order the bacon-filled pancakes

to share with Fido. This restaurant is an option when it’s raining, too, because its patios are

covered.

• Madison Social (aka MadSo) is a “pupular” eatery with dog owners. In addition to the staff

being nice to canine diners, the bar and grill serves tasty pub grub and has a laid-back and fun

atmosphere.

• Gordos — Bring your dog to Gordo’s and enjoy its colorful, laid-back patio as you order authentic

• J. R. Alford Greenway is one of Tallahassee’s most popular parks for dog walkers. With more than

17 miles of multi-use trails and 800 acres of pastures, mixed forests, hardwoods, freshwater

swamps, and a lake, this park will keep you and your pup entertained.

• Lafayette Heritage Trail Park welcomes leashed dogs on its shared-use trail. The overall distance

of the trail is 2.95 miles and is marked green. Keep your eyes open for some of Florida’s wildlife.

• Leon Sinks Geological Area is a pet-friendly place to bring your pooch for a lovely walk. Located

on the Woodville Karst Plain, this mature karstic area on the Upper Floridan Aquifer is home

to one of the most extensive underwater cave systems in the world and connects to Wakulla

Springs. Explore the forest, swamps and sinks with your leashed pooch.

PARK

Located less than a quarter of a mile from the state capitol building, this park that’s on the National

Register of Historic Places features 2.3 miles of dog-friendly walking trails, Florida’s Prime

Meridian marker, the Adderley Amphitheater at Cascades Park, an interactive water fountain,

Discovery playscape, numerous historical markers and spirit houses that are a commemoration

to Smokey Hollow, an area that was once a thriving black community and two restaurants. Enjoy

breakfast, lunch, dinner or a coffee on the patios at The Edison and Power Plant Cafe.

Bring Fido to Mission San Luis National Landmark, where you will be transported back to the

1600s. History tells us that the Mission was a community where Apalachee Indians and newcomers

from Spain co-existed in harmony and peace. It was home to more than 1,400 residents before a

British invasion in 1704 left it in ashes. Now a pet-friendly National Historic Landmark, Mission San

Luis has been carefully reconstructed and is the only Spanish mission in Florida. Well-behaved,

council house, Spanish house, blacksmith, church, chapel, friary kitchen and more. Period-dressed

characters share their history, showing first-hand how they lived – literally bringing history to life.
