The recipients of the 8th Annual Kurt Lattimer Aspiring
Artist Award were announced during the Madison
County Arts Council’s Young Artist Showcase on Jan. 26.
According to the organization’s founders, nearly 20
high school seniors participated in this year’s event. The
event took place at the First United Methodist Church of
London and featured performances by nearly a dozen
soloists, instrumentalists, and choirs representing all
areas of Madison County.
The recipients of the 2025 Kurt Lattimer Aspiring
Artist Award are:
· Rachel Tinney, a student at Tolles Career and Technical
Center. She won Best in Show for her entry, “Workaholic.”
· Dilana Blue, a student at Tolles Career and Technical
Center. She took first place in the fine arts category
for her entry, “Illuminated Embers of Love.”
· Emma Hensel, a student at London High School.
She took first place in the three-dimensional art category
for her entry, “Brainbound.”
· Gwyn Wieber, a student at London High School.
She took first place in the digital arts category for her
entry, “Missing Pieces.”
· Grace Ferguson, a student at Shekinah Christian
School. She received an honorable mention for her
entry, “Walking with My Shepherd.”
Each of the category recipients received $500. The
best in show recipient received $1,000. The work of all
of the entrants will be on display at London City Hall,
20 S. Walnut Street, through the end of February.
The Kurt Lattimer Aspiring Artist Award was founded
eight years ago to honor the life and artistry of Kurt Lattimer,
a 2008 graduate of London High School who passed
away in 2017. It was established by his mother, Kim Lattimer-Reeder,
step-father Tony Reeder, and local entrepreneurs/avid
art supporters Mick and Natalie Harris.
After the Young Artist Showcase, Mick Harris encouraged
all of the students to continue creating art and showcasing
it to the public.

The Madison County Arts Council is a non-profit organization
that provides opportunities for the community
and youth to pursue their dreams in the arts. According
to co-treasurer Valerie Peart, the non-profit organization
is looking to award five $1,000 scholarships to local high
school seniors. These scholarships, which are given annually
during the spring at the local schools’ award ceremonies,
are granted to individuals based on their
submitted essays, their past engagement in the arts, and
their academic performance. Students have until the end
of March to submit their applications. For more information
on the scholarship, visit www.madisoncountyartscouncil.org.
Among the individuals who performed in front of the
full capacity crowd was Madison Estep, a junior at
London High School. The tubist delighted the audience
with her rendition of “Yesterday” by The Beatles.

Meet Meadow
I'm a majestic blend of Mastiff and Australian
Shepherd, tipping the scales at a robust
92 lbs. born in February 2017. My
journey began alone in a local park, but a
kind-hearted police officer brought me to
the wonderful shelter.
People seem to be captivated by my
eyes, and they say they're stunning. More
importantly, affection is my middle name,
and I thrive on human
I'm looking for someone who can match
my enthusiasm on the leash. I'm eager to
learn and just need a patient teacher to
guide me through the basics. I shine brightest
as the only dog in the home,, I've mingled
with older kids, and we get along
famously. My size might be a bit much for
the little ones, but my heart is just the
right size for a family to love.
I'm proud to say my kennel is always
spick and span. It seems I've had some
house training in my past, which should
make settling into a new home a breeze. I
adore field trips to the park, and I'm quite
the aquatic enthusiast, I'm hoping to capture
your heart and become a cherished
member of your family best friend.
Meet Bailey
This incredibly handsome and sweet boy
is Bailey! Bailey is a Blue Merle Australian
Cattle Dog and Terrier mix, currently
weighing around 56lbs Bailey is the definition
of a cuddle bug! If you have a lap or
body he can lean against and just give him
all the love and pets, he will be your best
bud.
He is a typical dog and loves to go outside
for walks and playtime too! Bailey does
great walking on leash from what our staff
and volunteers say. Bailey bonds hard with
his person and would prefer to be the only
doggo in the home.
He also has a high prey drive meaning
he might try and chase cats and would do
best in a feline free home. Bailey absolutely
loves to play frisbee and fetch! so if you're
looking for a dog to be active with, Bailey is
your boy.
Bailey also keeps his kennel tidy, even
overnight. He's house-trained, and given
time to adjust to your routine, he'll do wonderfully.
If you would like to come and meet
this sweet and gentle boy, please fill out an
application today!

BLACKWELL
John R. “Frog” Blackwell II, 50, of Mechanicsburg,
formerly of London, died Sunday,
Jan. 19 in the Ohio State Wexner

Born Feb. 23, 1974, in Columbus, he was
a son of Earl Blackwell and Linda (Carroll)

found in music. While he listened to
various genres, he always gravitated back to
metal music where he enjoyed attending concerts
with his buddy Cracker. Frog also enjoyed
fishing whenever possible, even though
the bait was usually bigger than any fish he
would catch! Frog cherished time spent together
with family and friends, and could always
be found playing uno, shooting pool, or
even a striking up a game of basketball with
his daughter Maranda. He was always immensely
proud of her and the young woman
she has become. Frog’s fun-loving free spirit
made him a truly unique and irreplaceable
person to be around. Affectionately, a phrase
he often uttered included “you’re in my way,”

saying and lasting legacy amongst those who
loved him.
Frog is survived by his daughter Maranda

Blackwell.

At the Dec. 17 South Charleston Commission
meeting, the commissioners discussed
the possibility of the Village purchasing the
historic Houston Inn located at 25 E. Mound
St. for $150,000.
Per the Houstonia’s website
(houstonia.net), the home was built in 1900
by Foster Houston, heir to a fortune that in
today’s dollars would equate to well over $50
million. At his home, Houston would often
host high stakes poker games that included
prominent politicians and other members of
the financial elite.
The Inn in recent years has been the
Houstonia Bed & Breakfast, rated 4.5 out of
five with 11 reviews on Tripadvisor. It’s location
adjacent to the Ohio to Erie Trail
(OTET) makes it a popular stop for cyclists.
Tripadvisor user “GO-OHIO” described
the Houstonia as “like stepping back in time
to a stunning entryway full of beautiful woodwork.
This house is from a great era when
craftsman created works of art in the home.
Village Clerk/Fiscal Officer Jessica Hiser
said that the South Charleston Commissioners
will likely vote to approve the purchase
at their next meeting on Feb. 4.
