Frustrated
developer
to lay
complaint
• By Dylan Smits
A PROPERTY developer is
laying a complaint with the city
council after a rejected consent
delayed his housing build by six
months.
David Townshend won
a determination with the
Ministry of Business Innovation
and Employment (MBIE) after
disputing the rejection.
The city council said his
two planned multi-dwelling
buildings on Blenheim Rd,
Riccarton, did not comply with
fire safety regulations in the
building code.
He estimates the
determination process and
delays on his investment have
cost him about $100,000.
“This has gone on since
last May and was entirely
avoidable,” said Townshend.
“It’s wasted a lot of time and
money.”
Head of building consenting
Sanjay Dutthas said the city
council will not appeal the
MBIE decision.
No support for milestone anniversary event
• By Dylan Smits
THE CITY council and iwi
will not support a large-scale
celebration of Canterbury’s 175th
anniversary later this year.
In 2000, Christchurch hosted
a party and parade to mark the
150th anniversary of the first
four European ships arriving between
December 16 to 27, 1850.
Twenty-five years later, a proposal
to hold a similar event by a
planning committee has failed to
gain traction due to the colonial
history of the anniversary.
A meeting between the
committee, made up of
Canterbury history enthusiasts,
and council staff in September
led nowhere.
Said a city council
spokesperson: “We have
shifted towards more inclusive
and balanced historical
narratives since the 150 th
anniversary in 2000, which has
greater recognition of Māori
perspectives and the historical
harm of colonisation.”
The city council would
not support any anniversary
celebrations without support
from Ngāi Tahu rūnanga, said
the spokesperson.
However, all six rūnanga near
Christchurch told city council
staff they were not interested in
taking part in an anniversary
celebration, the spokesperson
said.
Ngāi Tahu did not respond
to The Star when asked for
the reasons why it would not
partake.
After the September meeting,
The Star understands the
planning committee was
dissolved. This has left plans
for any non-council funded
anniversary events up in the air.
A FLAT CAR tyre and more than
1400km did nothing to stop Nuk
Korako’s charity bike ride from
Cape Reinga to Wellington.
The effort raised more than
$30,000 for the Cholmondeley
Children’s Centre as part of the
charity’s centennial celebrations.
The former National MP was
joined by Cholmondeley chair
Nettles Lamont on the 14-day ebike
journey.
“I feel real good cause now I can
say I cycled the whole of New Zealand
for charity,” Korako said.
Now an Environment Canterbury
councillor, Korako previously
cycled the length of the South
Island over two stints in 2021 and
2022.
This partly raised $90,000 so
his cousin’s daughter, Renee Veal,
could undergo life-changing jaw
surgery.
The trip was mostly drama free
and Korako enjoyed seeing sights
at Ninety Mile Beach and Waipoua
Kauri Forest.
“It was a challenge for sure, but
you just needed a bit of fire in the
heart and ice in the head to push
through it,” he said.
Korako was humbled by North
Island hospitality on the final Sunday
of the journey.
The cyclists’ support car got
a flat tyre near Taumarunui in
the central North Island.
Korako and Lamont were being
picked up by their support team to
be dropped off at accommodation.
“These two guys on Harleys
came up to us and one of them had
a mate who owns a tyre shop.
“He called him up and within
an hour he took the car, opened
the shop and replaced the tyre. Just
Council silent on theatre budget
THE COST of building the
Court Theatre has increased by
$5.5m but the city council will
not say why due to commercial
sensitivity.
The total budget is now
$61.5m – 70% more than the
original $36m figure from 2021.
The budget was later revised
to $56m, but this has also been
exceeded.
Last week the city council
included a new budget of
$58.5m in the agenda for its
finance and performance
meeting. It said the figure
included an additional $4.4m,
approved by the council via a
“change request” in late 2024.
The city council confirmed
to Stuff the new budget was
actually even more, coming in
at $61.5m due to the Crown’s
$3m contribution.
Also adding to the $5.5m
figure is a mystery rise from
$56m to $57m in last year’s
budget.
Ratepayers are now spending
$51.5m towards the project
while the Court Theatre is
contributing $7m.
SUCCESS: Nuk Korako and Cholmondeley Children’s Centre
chair Nettles Lamont raised more than $30,000 for the
charity after cycling from Cape Reinga to Wellington. Korako
great generosity.”
Upon arrival at the steps of
Parliament, Finance Minister
Nicola Willis and Labour MP
Peeni Henare helped celebrate the
journey’s completion.
“They just said ‘good on you
guys’ for raising the profile of the
children’s centre. It was a cross
party thing and it was nice to have
in May, the city council is not
saying what the additional
money is being spent on.
City council head of vertical
capital delivery Darren Moses
told Stuff there would not
be answers to any questions
on the construction budget
until the theatre project was
completed, due to commercial
negotiations.
WELCOME: Korako was
greeted by Finance Minister
Nicola Willis outside
Parliament upon completing
the ride.
that support,” said Korako.
Korako is the patron of Cholmondeley
and has a deep personal
connection to the home.
His mother died of a heart attack
when he was 10, leaving his
father to contend with raising nine
children.
To offer his father some time to
grieve and plan, Korako and five of
his sisters were sent to Cholmondeley
for a month.
Further events and fundraisers
for Cholmondeley’s centenary will
occur through the year.
Korako is encouraging people to
stay tuned into his and the
children’s centre’s Facebook pages.
Colonial
history difficult
for council
to support
•From page 1
Harewood Ward councillor
Aaron Keown supported the
committee’s efforts to organise
an anniversary event but said
city council staff seemed to “lack
passion” for the proposal.
“It’s probably a
difficult time for
the staff to commit
to events like this
with the stadium
and sports centre
coming along.
We’re sort of
Aaron
Keown
looking forward
as a city at the
moment instead
of backwards,”
Keown said. He said the colonial
history of the anniversary
made it difficult for the city
council to support.
“Spending any council money
or resource on anything that can
come across as controversial is
just damn near impossible,” said
Keown.
“I’m not a politically correct
person who says we must respect
the treaty in all things, but I do
think it would be disrespectful
to just go ahead and do events
without their (Ngāi Tahu)
support.”
•From page 1
Townshend said the issue
came down to how the council
was interpreting an acceptable
solution, which is a way of
meeting the building code
relating to the fire rating of the
buildings external walls.
He submitted a building
consent application in May last
year to construct seven units
within two buildings.
The southern building has
three units, one two-storey and
two single-storey, “stacked” on
top of each other.
The northern building has four
units – two two-storey, and two
single-storey units – on top of
each other.
The stacked units are within
5m of the property boundary,
which in the building code
triggers the need for a higher fire
resistance rating (FRR) on the
exterior walls.
Other units only need a higher
FRR if they are 1m away.
The dispute is over whether
the two-storey units attached to
the stacked units also need
a higher FRR, as they are
attached.
Townshend believed the
distance requirement only
Latest Canterbury news at starnews.co.nz
‘I don’t want the same thing
to happen to anyone else’
applies to each unit individually.
“I’m trying to build
attractive but affordable
housing for tenants,” he said.
“Not having to make almost all
the walls fire-resistant saves a lot
of money.”
MBIE sided with Townshend
and overruled the consent
rejection, determining the
code only applies to each unit
individually rather than all
attached units.
Townshend has filed a
complaint with city council chief
executive Mary Richardson
about the process.
“I don’t want the same thing to
happen to anyone else,” he said.
One of his biggest frustrations
was the need to take the dispute
to determination when his
interpretation of the building
code was correct.
“The (council) were wrong, but
they were not really open to that
possibility,” he said.
Dutthas said city council staff
having different interpretations
of the building code was
reasonable.
“Without a decision from
MBIE there was not sufficient
clarity for the council to
have reasonable grounds
that the work would comply,” he
said.
Townshend also believes
consents staff had a lack of
knowledge of the acceptable
AFFORDABLE:
An artist’s
impression
of David
Townshend’s
two multi-unit
buildings.
solution rules.
Dutthas defended the consents
team despite the complaint,
saying they are “appropriately
qualified and competent”.
Townshend said the
determination was an example of
incorrect code interpretation by
the city council.
He believes it’s indicative
of other overly bureaucratic
barriers he and other developers
encounter when engaging with
the consents unit.
“I have no doubt there are
good people in there but as a
customer, the experience and
how much this costs should not
come down to who you get on
your consent.”
AN EXEMPTION to the bike
racks on buses ban has been
lodged.
Environment Canterbury has
requested the racks be allowed
nationwide during daylight
hours while a permanent solution
is found to stop bus headlights
being obscured.
The decision, expected this
month, now sits with the New
Zealand Transport Agency Waka
Kotahi.
ECan’s requested exemption
would allow bikes on racks
30min before sunrise until
30min after sunset.
“We believe any safety issues
regarding bike racks would only
occur at night and therefore
would like to reinstate the use
of racks during daytime for our
customers,” said ECan public
transport operations manager
Derek Walsh.
The controversial ban went
into force in November after bus
operators said bus racks were not
compliant with NZTA headlight
safety regulations – even during
daytime.
At the time, a starnews.co.nz
poll showed 87 per cent against
the ban while only 13 per cent
agreed, out of 684 respondents.
The NZTA initially disputed
the Bus and Coach Association’s
claim the ban would need to apply
during daytime.
The association, which represents
all bus operators including
Metro, initiated the 24/7 ban as it
believes safety regulations do not
specify whether headlights can
be obscured in daylight.
If the exemption is not approved,
Walsh said cyclists may
have to wait until September
for bikes to be allowed on racks
while operators assess bus fleets
for compliance, develop solutions,
and get final sign off from
NZTA.
Latest Canterbury news at starnews.co.nz
to bikes on buses ban
ACTION: Environment Canterbury has applied for an
exemption to the bike racks on buses ban. PHOTO: ECAN
A national working group to
lift the ban has been formed,
which released a guide for operators
to test bus fleet headlights
and racks for compliance.
Metro buses is currently using
the guidance to test its fleet and
find potential solutions.
Buses with racks found to
obscure headlights would need to
adjust the placement of the bike
rack, move the headlights, or
install auxiliary headlights.
Once bus operators either
receive the daytime exemption
or final sign off from NZTA, the
safety regulations will still need
to be amended to remove the
need for exemptions.
NEW PARKING fees at four
Hagley Park car parks may be
reducing overstaying.
The fees were introduced in
November to free up space and
help the city council minimise
rates increases through additional
revenue.
“So far it would appear
that following the introduction
of charges behaviour has
improved,” said a city council
spokesperson.
“The introduction of time limited
and paid parking is often
proven to positively change
behaviour and achieve better
compliance.”
The car parks are at the Botanic
Gardens in Armagh St and
Riccarton Ave, Hagley Oval in
Riccarton Ave, and the Sir Richard
Hadlee Sports Centre.
Parks cost $2 for the first hour
and then $1.30 for each additional
hour, up to a maximum
of $4.60 for three hours.
Motorists face a fine of between
$20 and $97 depending on how
long they stay after three hours.
In all four car parks there
have been 49 overstaying tickets
issued and $96,321 paid in
parking fees to date. About $2.1
Judy Bailey finds natural joint support
After stepping away from our
TV screens, iconic broadcaster
Judy Bailey still has a full
schedule with family, work and
community projects.
the day.”
“That’s why I recommend
Koru FX cream by Koru
made, natural, fast-acting, longlasting
and has become NZ’s
leading topical joint and muscle
possible as I age. I want to be able
to play with my grandkids and stay
active for several more summers
yet!”
“I’d been watching dozens of
LOOKING FOR JOINT SUPPORT? Judy Bailey has found Koru FX works well to support her joints.
people recommend Koru FX cream
for joints but I’m a sceptic.”
“I’d been a journalist for over 40
years and I often think, ‘Hmm, you
hear about these sorts of creams to
support joints, but I always want
to review them myself to see what
they’re really like.’”
“I’d been given a tube of this
Koru FX so thought I’d give it a
go…”
“I rubbed it in when
travelling and noticed it almost
instantaneously!”
“What was even more
impressive was that the effect
seemed to be really long-lasting. I
didn’t have to apply it again that
day.”
“I really like how it’s packed full
of high quality, natural ingredients
that support joints and muscles
quickly.”
“Don’t take my word for it
though. I recommend you try it for
Software firm aiming higher after
• By Tim Cronshaw
SUCCESS: Lumin founder and chief executive Max Ferguson
started the software company after becoming frustrated with
the processes around digital collaboration. PHOTO: LUMIN
CHRISTCHURCH software
company Lumin wants one
billion-plus documents passing
through its cloud-based business
a year now that it has crossed the
100 million user mark.
Founder and chief executive
Max Ferguson is confident the
goal is within reach of the platform
after going through a large growth
phase.
Initially a cloud-based PDF editor,
the business has expanded to
take on artificial intelligence (AI)
and e-signature services.
This has brought in international
customers such as Netflix,
Airbnb and Uber as well as F&M
Bank in the United States and
domestic clients including Renti
and Bayleys.
Lumin now employs about
100 staff with software building
teams based also in Auckland and
around the world including Vietnam,
Philippines, United States
and Europe.
Ferguson said the goal was to
scale up the business further.
‘‘Our vision is to help our customers
enjoy working with over
a billion documents a year. So we
are really focused on how we can
improve PDF or replace PDF and
help people enjoy documents.
“We might do 100 million documents
a year and we are not signing
all of those, so some of them
are just annotations and that sort
of thing so we really want to get to
the volume where Lumin is a massive
part of how people do work
and we are providing solutions for
PDF at a world scale.’’
He said reaching the 100 million
user milestone was a big achievement
by the entire team.
“There was a huge amount of friction just getting
information from a building plan back to the people
who designed it and getting updates from them and
I realised this was something I could work on to find
a solution, especially with all the change that was
happening in the tech sector at the time.’’
– Max Ferguson
Lumin sells its software on a
per document model to business
customers and makes it available
free to users such as schools.
Ferguson said Lumin had
always re-invested profits back into
products to continually improve
year after year after being ‘‘bootstrapped’’
from the start.
He said they avoided spending
large amounts of money to ‘‘just
create a buzz’’.
While studying for a structural
engineering degree at Canterbury
University he was exposed to
modern technology at a stage
when cloud storage was quickly
growing.
Entering the workplace in 2014
during the Christchurch rebuild,
he realised there were many barriers
when it came to working
on documents and collaborating
digitally.
‘‘We were printing scanned
documents and would have to
either manually take them back to
the designers or would scan and
email them over and I just found
things were getting lost in that
process.
“There was a huge amount of
friction just getting information
from a building plan back to
the people who designed it and
getting updates from them and
I realised this was something I
could work on to find a solution,
especially with all the change
that was happening in the tech
sector at the time.’’
Modern users have found new
and innovative ways to use Lumin
products, but core services
include the signing of digital
documents such as lease documents
and HR contracts.
Another use is a PDF collaboration
tool so architects,
construction businesses, lawyers
and other professionals can load
feedback and make changes on
documents stored in the cloud.
Ferguson said they had more
lately incorporated AI into
many Lumin products such
as document summaries for
clients.
passing 100 million user milestone
‘‘We also have Vision AI so we
allow forms to be automatically created.
So if you upload a document
with no form fields on it we can
place the form fields in there for you
automatically,” Ferguson said.
“But our focus has really been to
create products which are helpful
for the end user rather than just
jam a whole lot of features into the
products.’’
He said the company had tried to
work towards a steady growth rate
rather than progressing too quickly.
However, a million people were
using the platform within the first
month of the first version’s release.
This accelerated after the Lumin
team completely rebuilt the product
suite ‘‘from the ground up’’ in 2019.
Ferguson said about 40 million
people were continuing to use the
product during the rebuild and they
had to maintain workflows.
‘‘It was probably one of the most
stressful decisions that I had ever
made to do that, but we rebuilt
everything and got it working really
well and in the last five years we saw
this really explosive growth.’’
Until then, features such as
highlight PDF had been added on
without thinking about how people
collaborated or used the software
at work. The rebuild rectified this,
with their performance, reliability
and security raised to the level of the
world’s best tech products, he said.
RESULT: Ferguson and members of the Lumin team celebrate passing the 100 million user
mark at the company’s Armagh St office.
PHOTOS: LUMIN
Ferguson said the likes of Airbnb,
Netflix and Uber came to them as
their product became better known.
‘‘We have a really great integration
with Google Drive and so
those companies are presumably
using Google Drive and the Google
Workplace suite and Lumin really
works well with those products.
“Teams at those companies
reached out to us and purchased
Lumin . . . and then as we see people
get to use and enjoy the product
it will grow out to more teams using
it in the company.’’
Lumin team members often go
out to the Google Next conference
in the United States each year and
other global events to meet customers
and understand global markets.
Ferguson said he saw great
potential to build a tech company in
Christchurch from the beginning.
He said Canterbury and Lincoln
universities were generating –
with other educational providers
– skilled and ambitious potential
employees.
‘‘The tech sector is still developing
here so we have got a few big players,
but it’s still relatively new so I was
quite excited to build the company’s
headquarters here and give those
people who are graduating an opportunity
to come and work at a
world class company.’’
He would like to see the city
become a larger tech area.
So far the temptation to bring in
outside capital has been resisted.
‘‘I wouldn’t rule it out and there’s
potential there in the future. One
thing I do find is that we try to
think long term so we are trying to
figure out how we improve agreements
and collaboration long term
and what’s coming after PDF which
is really on a 10-year or longer time
horizon.
“Often venture capital is looking
for quick wins and if we were going
out to raise capital we would really
want to do it to make a big impact
and a long-term change rather
than really focusing on short-term
growth which is important, but we
are all about the long-term vision.’’
Ferguson said many new products
were coming out this year and
they were working hard to figure
out the next step for agreements and
contracts and ways to build digital
trust.
AI was growing quickly and it
was difficult to know what could be
trusted and whether an agreement
was being drafted by a company
or AI. Lumin had plans to carry
out product development such as
identity verification to create trust
solutions particularly for signing
documents, Ferguson said.
He said using AI to achieve this
could be part of the future.

Stadium construction starts year strong
THE STEEL superstructure of
One New Zealand Stadium at Te
Kaha is now complete, marking
a major milestone for the $683
million project.
In a newly released video, city
council project director Kent
on the latest achievement and
gave a look at other key work
areas around the site.
“We’ve started the year strong,”
Summerfield said.
“The final two
steel modules
have been lifted
into place at the
northern end of
the site.”
Each of these
modules weighed
around 160
tonnes, making
them the heaviest
of the project. The largest crane in
the country, a 1200 tonne crawler,
was required for the task.
“Installing these final modules
closes out a significant phase
of the project for the team.
Every step of the roof installation
process has been complex and
presented its own challenges,”
Summerfield said.
The roof structure is made up
of more than 80 steel modules,
each weighing at least 75 tonnes.
“With this work under way, the
final look of the stadium is starting
to emerge,” Summerfield said.
An update on the inside of the
stadium is also provided.
“Nearly all the concrete seating
plats are now in place. Metalwork
and handrail installation will
Homeless gardener on hunt for a job
• By Geoff Sloan
HOMELESS MAN Stephen
Shann, 62, is on a mission to clean
up New Brighton’s weeds – and
find a job.
The qualified horticulturist
likes to keep himself busy and
has recently taken to unprompted
voluntary work clearing weeds
and lawn edges around the city
council-owned gardens and
grounds near New Brighton
Library.
“Just tidying up, helping the
council out a bit,” said Shann.
He is finding things quite
tough, and has been living out of
his car for more than two years.
“I take each day as it comes.”
Estranged from his family, he
didn’t want to elaborate on how
he came to be homeless, saying
“it’s a long story”.
While Shann receives the
Jobseeker Support benefit, he has
found it hard getting other agencies
to help him.
City council community
parks manager Al Hardy said
Shann had done a good job and
approved of the gardening tasks
carried out.
Hardy said it wasn’t unusual
for volunteers to help out, but
urged anyone interested in doing
similar work to register their
interest via the council’s website.
SEEKING WORK: Stephen Shann is a qualified horticulturist and currently homeless. He has
been voluntarily tidying the gardens and grounds around New Brighton Library while he looks
for a job.
PHOTOS: GEOFF SLOAN
This will allow them to connect to
volunteer groups and get support
from the community partnership
ranger.
Originally from Gisborne,
Shann came to Christchurch
looking for work just after the
earthquakes.
He loves New Brighton and
the people, and just wants to help
keep the community tidy. The
keen gardener also volunteers
at a local primary school and St
Faith’s Church in New Brighton,
where he keeps the grounds tidy.
Former city councillor and St
Faith’s treasurer David Close has
known Shann for a long time and
said he does a great job for the
church. Close helped him find a
place to live, but said high rent
costs forced Shann back into living
out of his car.
Retired New Brighton social
worker Marty Leith said Shann
was a “likeable rogue” and was a
good and reliable worker.
Leith said people sleeping in
their cars wasn’t uncommon, as
there were often issues around low
incomes and the availability of accommodation
in the community.
Shann admits he does sometimes
attract attention from
passers-by, most commenting that
he’s doing a good job. He’s looking
for permanent work doing landscaping
or gardening work.
“I want a paid job, not voluntary
anymore.”
The dedicated gardener is racing
to get the garden and grounds
around the New Brighton Pier
tidied up in time for Saturday’s
Coast to Coast finish on the beach.
How Mentoring Helped Grow
A Holistic Wellness Business
For Jenine Kerr, building a thriving
business in Ōtautahi Christchurch
has been a challenging yet rewarding
journey. After starting Nine Healing
Arts, she faced the reality of restarting
from scratch.
“I create events to help recalibrate
your nervous system,” she explains.
Offering everything from Thai Yoga
Massage to Sound Healing and ‘Gong
Baths’, it’s a business deeply rooted in
holistic wellness. However, getting back
on the ground in her hometown of
Christchurch after being away for 15
years posed unique challenges.
Kerr’s entrepreneurial journey began
in Berlin with a nomadic yoga studio.
After returning to Christchurch and
taking time off to care for her son, she
needed support to get back on track.
She found the guidance she needed at
Business Mentors New Zealand.
“Working with a mentor has been a
game changer,” she says. “My mentor,
Katherinne Jaimes, has been flexible
and supportive, helping me focus on
the basics of running a business and
marketing it effectively.”
One of the most valuable outcomes of
their work together was clarifying her
direction. “Katherinne helped me map
out my services, finances, and ‘why.’ I’m
creative by nature, so numbers weren’t
my strength, but now I have a clearer
picture of where I need to invest
my time.”
As a result, Kerr has streamlined her
business model, focusing on structured
ADVERTISEMENT
workshops, which now generate
more income.
Kerr also recognised that marketing
was a key area for improvement. Her
mentor suggested hiring help, leading
Kerr to bring in a specialist to work on
her website and SEO. “Now, when you
Google ‘sound healing in Christchurch,’
I’m one of the first results.” With
Katherinne’s guidance, Kerr has
strengthened her social media presence
and built a more consistent brand. “I’m
getting great reviews and new clients.”
Accountability has been key. “As a
freelancer, you’re often alone. Having
someone to bounce ideas off has been
invaluable. Katherinne helps me stay on
track, even when I’m feeling uninspired.”
Kerr highly recommends mentorship
through Business Mentors New
Zealand. “It’s a very affordable
investment, and the right mentor offers
invaluable support.”
See businessmentors.org.nz if you
are interested in finding or becoming
Hercules make final flyover
Coastguard
gets new
tow tractor
• By Geoff Sloan
COASTGUARD Canterbury has
welcomed the newest member
of its fleet, a Kubota tractor
which will be used to launch
and recover search-and-rescue
vessels. Given the call sign BOT,
the ‘Big Orange Tractor’ was
purchased with funds from Pub
Charity Ltd.
Coastguard Canterbury board
member Carolyn Tapley said
BOT will play a vital role in their
search and rescue operations.
While the new tractor was a
dream to drive, she said it was
sad to say goodbye to their former
workhorse, BBT (Big Blue
Tractor) which had “done us
proud for over a decade”.
Tapley said the Ford 7840
tractor was now up for sale, and
anyone interested was welcome
to contact to contact the
volunteer charity organisation.
SOUTH ISLANDERS got their
last chance to see New Zealand’s
celebrated workhorses of the sky
as they flew towards retirement
earlier this week.
Three No 40 Squadron RN-
ZAF C-130H Hercules flew over
towns and cities on Monday and
Tuesday, in a final salute to the
nation and ending their 60-yearlong,
accident-free career.
The Hercules retirement flight
took off from Whenuapai in
Auckland on Monday, flying
along the west coast before stopping
overnight in Invercargill.
The final flight back along the
east coast took in Dunedin and
Christchurch, before landing for
the final time at RNZAF Base
Woodbourne to join two other
aircraft already there.
Four of the aircraft will retire
to the base, while New Zealand’s
first Hercules to go into operation,
NZ7001, gets set to take
pride of place in a new $20 million
exhibition hangar to be built
at Wigram’s Air Force Museum.
The now retired fleet has been
replaced by five C-130J Hercules
boasting greater range, speed
and capacity. The first of the new
aircraft started operations last
year, with the RNZAF taking
delivery of the final aircraft in
December.
WELL-KNOWN Christchurch
musicians are set to play at
a new country and western
festival, ‘Country in the
Country’.
Christchurch-based alt-country
singer Katie Thompson and
the KT band will perform at the
festival in Leeston on March 30,
as will Lyttelton-based group
The Eastern.
Thompson opened for Elton
John in Dunedin in 2011, while
The Eastern has performed their
folk country blend from Nashville
to Timaru.
Also performing are 17-yearold
Southlander Carly Drysdale,
a finalist for the New Zealand
country music awards songwriter
of the year for her song
Revenge, plus Dunedin-based
The Sisterhood. Casey de Blecourt
from The Sisterhood was
the NZCMA Entertainer of the
Year award in 2022.
The festival is the brainchild
of Selwyn Sounds co-promoter
Craig Bradford and Hang Up
Entertainment Services director
Andre Goldsmith.
Bradford and Goldsmith noticed
a gap in the festival market
for country music, in the midst
of the genre’s massive commercial
resurgence.
“There’s a billion concerts, but
none of them are country,” said
Goldsmith.
Bradford said the music
“This could potentially become
Goldsmith said Country
elements of music festivals and
City impresses
I’ve just spent six weeks in
Christchurch and congratulations
to all who have made this city
great again. The highlights?
1. Public transport: inexpensive,
frequent, clean, on time (due to
bus lanes) and the most friendly
drivers. People watching out and
thanking each other.
2. Botanic Gardens and Hagley
Park. Well maintained, frequented
by hundreds.
3. Cathedral Square library
(Tūranga) is the best and well used
by locals of all ages and visitors,
plus the good cafe.
4. The art gallery, swimming
pools, walks, beaches, trams,
markets.
5. Architecture and restorations
that surprise, impress and remind
us.
Best of all are the ‘slow’ streets
and the trees. What a joy to walk
among them in the central city
by the river. They help blend the
new with the old and remind
us that everything takes time.
Fourteen years since the quake
and Christchurch you’ve made it.
Thank you.
- Liz Angelo-Roxborough,
Dunedin
For me the main issues in the
forthcoming local body elections
are returning the speed limits to
what they used to be and reducing
the rates. My rates are crippling
since they almost doubled the rating
value of my land in 2022.
- Michael Brathwaite, Spreydon
I would just like to say what a
great grassroots occasion it was
last Friday at the Kirwee Rugby
Club, watching the Crusaders
playing the Blues in a pre-season
match. A great crowd and atmosphere
and the weather was lovely.
This is the home ground of the
great Don Hayes, captain of Canterbury’s
greatest Ranfurly Shield
era 1982-85.
I think the Crusaders are on the
bounce-back big time this season.
Great new recruits in halfback
Kyle Preston and others, alongside
Friday’s captain Ethan Blackadder,
who I believe will have a brilliant
year. Ethan played so well.
into coaching role
SIDESTEP: Crusaders right wing Chay Fihaki in action.
Below – Ethan Blackadder leads the team onto the field.
• By Kees Chalmers
THE LEGENDARY Robbie Timo
is finally hanging up his boots.
The 55-year-old played 30 seasons
for Sumner, notching up an
incredible 501 caps.
Timo is definitely not finished
with the club – instead he’ll be
coaching the division 2 Tsunami.
“It’s always exciting, to take
a team and start from scratch,
work our way through the ups
and downs of the season,” he
said.
He has occupied a senior
playing role in the team for a
while, but says coaching is a big
step up.
“It’s more organising and
communicating with the players,
making sure they’re all good
during the week so they can
perform on Saturday.”
Sumner last week announced
its senior coaching staff for 2025.
Gareth D’Almeida will take the
reins once again for premier side
the Wave.
The Tsunami has an entirely
new coaching crew, with Timo
stepping into the head coach role,
Pete Rintoul taking the forwards
and Willy Saukaru the backs.
SWITCH: Sumner’s Robbie Timo has retired from playing for
the Tsunami. Instead he will be coaching the division 2 side.
PHOTO: GEOFF SLOAN
While the boots are firmly
hung up, Timo said he won’t turn
down the chance to lace them up
again if the team needs him.
“If we’re short I’ll slip them on,
but hopefully just coaching.”
The Te Aratai College
schoolteacher said players
rotating made consistency
difficult to maintain towards
last season’s finals. This year, he
hopes to establish a core group of
players that will come in, week in
and week out.
The Tsunami is already into
pre-season and aim to advance
past the semi-finals and win the
division 2 competition.
“There’s a lot of excitement
growing in the squad, so I’m
looking forward to seeing them
out on the paddock,” Timo said.
Dilo Oil – the remarkable
skin rejuvenator
Until Rachel Hunter’s popular TV series “TOUR
OF BEAUTY,” Dilo oil was relatively unknown, being
one of the best-kept secrets of the Pacific Islands. It
may, however, be one of the best natural beauty and
healing oils available as it possesses potent natural skin
regeneration and healing properties.
According to ethnobotanist Chris Kilham, Dilo
(pronounced dee-lo) oil is a powerful skin regenerator
as it is one of the most effective agents in promoting
the regeneration and formation of new tissue, thereby
accelerating wound healing and the growth of
healthy skin.
As early as 1918, French researchers discovered
what the people of the South Pacific Islands have
known for hundreds of years: Dilo oil has a rare and
powerful ability to heal many skin conditions. In French
medical literature, they described how the oil healed a
gangrenous ulcer on a woman’s leg that was so serious a
condition it would have led to an amputation if the Dilo
oil hadn’t completely cured it.
Dilo oil has the unique ability to spur the formation
of new tissue, drastically speeding up the healing
process. Studies show it promotes cell proliferation and
the production of collagen and glycosaminoglycans or
GAGs. GAGs are essential for creating and maintaining
healthy collagen and elastin. For this reason, Dilo oil is
fantastic at supporting the healing of wounds and scars
as well as smoothing fine lines and wrinkles.
Dilo oil is super-absorbing and can penetrate all three
layers of the skin, including the epidermis, dermis and
hypodermis. It offers exceptional cell hydration and
regeneration. As well as this, Dilo oil has potent antiinflammatory,
antimicrobial, antifungal and
antioxidant properties.
Traditionally, Dilo oil is used to keep the skin young
and youthful as well as for just about any skin complaint.
Some of the conditions for which it is considered helpful
include abrasions, cuts and cracks, acne and acne scars,
pimples, blemishes, stretch marks, wrinkles, blisters,
burns (including chemical and radiation), diabetic sores,
rashes, shaving irritation, dry or scaly skin, eczema,
psoriasis, dermatitis, herpes sores (cold sores), insect
bites and stings, rheumatism, pain, sciatica, shingles,
sunburn, rosacea, athlete’s foot, skin eruptions, warts,
skin ulcers and sores, nappy rash and almost any other
skin ailment and often with incredible results. Dilo oil
also has a natural sun protection factor and is a natural
insect repellent.
Many beauty and skincare products on the market
today contain unnatural ingredients that can be toxic
and may even contribute to disease. Generally, the
benefits are exaggerated and often only temporary
or camouflage. Marshall’s Dilo oil is 100% pure and
certified organic. It has been cold-pressed from the Dilo
nut and contains absolutely no additives. Polynesians
and Southeast Asians have revered Dilo oil for centuries,
believing it to be a sacred gift of nature and the Gods.
Dilo oil stimulates and supports the skin’s natural
healing process by growing new healthy skin tissue. I
believe it is a remarkable product and highly recommend
it to everyone. A 50ml bottle is only $19.90 and 100ml is
only $32.50.
NATURAL HEALING
& Beauty Oil
Revered for centuries by Polynesians & Southeast Asians for its remarkable skin
anti-aging & healing properties, Dilo oil comes from the nut of the sacred Dilo
tree, “the tree of a thousand virtues”. Dilo oil is often called the beauty oil as it
can penetrate all three layers of the skin offering exceptional cell hydration &
regeneration. It has a unique ability to stimulate the growth of healthy skin cells &
this gives it powerful anti-aging & healing properties that can help reduce lines,
blemishes, scars & damage to the skin. It also possesses anti-inflammatory,
antimicrobial, antifungal & antioxidant properties.
Trust Interests and
Relationship Property Claims
Do you have a trust holding assets like the
family home? Trusts are a popular way of
protecting property and managing assets.
However, there is misunderstanding that if
a trust owns relationship property assets,
this will serve as a complete barrier to a
potential relationship property claim.
If you are in a qualifying relationship
under the Relationship (Property) Act 1976
(“PRA”), your assets become subject to
potential redistribution if that relationship
ends. Generally, relationship property assets
include the family home and household
chattels, as well as any other property that
was acquired during the relationship. The
default position is that these relationship
property assets are divided on a 50:50 basis.
When can someone make a claim
against the trust property? If your
relationship property assets are held by a
trust, they are not exempt from relationship
property division. The below are some
examples where this may occur:
1. If the property was already in a
trust before the relationship began
and there is a loan secured over the
property. If either party contributes
towards the loan payments from
income or other funds earned during
the relationship, it can be argued that
those payments were made from
relationship funds and hence a claim
can be made against the trust assets.
2. If one party contributed to the
“improvement” of the family home
(defined widely) then they may have
an ability to claim against the trust.
3. If one party has all the relationship
assets in a trust, but you have made
Protecting you
through all stages
of life
contributions (in money or services)
to acquiring, preserving or enhancing
the trust property, you could make
a claim. Your contributions must
exceed the benefits received. For
example, you invest money into a
trust-owned family business and
work for that business without
receiving income.
From these examples, one thing is clear,
simply owning assets in a trust does not
fully protect them from claims by your
partner or spouse on separation.
Your options: Contracting Out
Agreement If you do not want the default
positions of the PRA to apply, and seek to
protect you and your partners respective
interests in relationship and trust assets,
you can enter into a Contracting Out
Agreement. A Contracting Out Agreement
needs to be entered into prior to separation.
It can be made at any stage during the
relationship and can determine how your
property is to be divided on separation or
death. This agreement would be followed
in the first instance, rather than the general
default position.
Conclusion To prevent claims being
made against relationship property held
by trusts on separation, it is recommended
you speak to a lawyer about entering a
Contracting Out Agreement during your
relationship. This allows you to and your
partner to discuss and agree on a fair
outcome in the event you and your partner
separate (or upon death).
United aiming for spot in
new professional league
• By Sam Coughlan
COULD Christchurch be about
to get its first professional football
team?
Christchurch United has signalled
its intention to enter next
year’s OFC Professional League,
the first of its kind for Oceania.
The league will be made up
of eight teams from across the
confederation, as well as Australia
and potentially Hawaii.
United general manager and
first team head coach Ryan
Edwards last week
flew to Auckland
to attend a
presentation on
the league by the
Oceania Football
Confederation.
He was one of a
number of representatives
from
across the country
Ryan
Edwards
attending in-person or virtually.
The only South Island clubs
at the meeting were United,
Cashmere Technical and Nelson
Suburbs, while the presentation
has been forwarded to other clubs.
Edwards said Christchurch
United would be entering a bid
for the league, which is slated to
start in January 2026 and will be
partially funded by FIFA – the
governing body for the sport.
“ It’s a really good opportunity
for New Zealand football,” he said.
“And wouldn’t it be great to
have professional football in the
south?”
Currently the only professional
sides in New Zealand are Wellington
Phoenix and Auckland FC,
who play in Australia’s men’s and
women’s A-Leagues.
Kirikiri bringing Samoan spirit to Hagley Park
• By Sam Coughlan
KIRIKIRI, a Samoan form of
cricket, is set to take over Hagley
Park today and Saturday.
The Christchurch Samoan
Minister’s Fraternal is hosting its
third annual competition, played
between teams representing
churches from across the city.
Organiser Hemi Lesatele said
it promised to be a fantastic
occasion.
“ The batting team, they have a
person that stands up, and they
all sing songs, and on the fielding
team, every time someone gets out,
they either have a drum playing, or
they just do all these actions.
“Some people might say it’s to
tease the batter that just got out,
but no, it’s just part of the game.”
Kirikiri is played with a long bat,
BID: Christchurch United has signalled it’s intention to enter the OFC Pro League next year.
PHOTO: JIM WATTS PHOTOGRAPHY
Two weeks ago the Phoenix
played in Christchurch for the
first time in nine years, drawing
0-0 with Central Coast Mariners
in front of 14,064 fans – their
second-highest home crowd for
the season.
“We saw from that game,
14,000 turned up to watch a Wellington
team, so imagine what
would happen with a Christchurch
team,” Edwards said.
He was confident United
would be able to hit the targets,
which include having a fulltime
general manager, a strong
technical plan, and being able
to contract at least 20 players
full-time.
“We have 10 or 11 full-time
staff, which is quite sizable
compared to most clubs in
similar to a normal cricket bat but
skinnier, and a ball made out of
hard rubber wrapped in pandanus
leaves.
It can feature huge numbers –
sometimes more than 100 people
play at once – but teams are limited
to 15 for the competition.
“ You can have little kids playing,
you can have the elderly playing,
it’s a little family game,” Lesatele
said.
“But for this competition, it’s
mainly those that are more able,
because they’re a bit competitive.”
The round robin will take place
at South Hagley Park today – with
nine men’s teams and eight women’s
– with the finals on Saturday.
Ekalesia Metotisi are the
defending men’s winners and
Ekalesia Katoliko o Roma the
women’s.
this country, and we’ve got the
facilities and infrastructure with
more being built,” he said.
“ There’s a few little bits and
pieces that we’ll need to iron out
to meet what they’re asking for,
but we’re in a pretty good place.”
Ferrymead Bays director of
football Alan Walker said participation
in the league would be
unattainable for most clubs.
“ If you’re going to be in a position
where you pay a minimum
wage for players that are going to
be contracted, what you’re looking
at is a cost model that would
stretch 99% of the clubs in the
country,” he said.
“As much as I’d love to think
that Ferrymead Bays would be
interested in (the competition),
the cost of it would need to be
worked through first.”
Cashmere Technical president
Bill Cowen agreed, and said the
time-frames were extremely tight.
Teams need to express interest
by the end of this month and
submit foundational documents
by the end of March, while the
deadline for all submissions is the
end of June.
“ It’s an incredibly short timeframe
to navigate something as
big as this,” Cowen said.
“ I can’t possibly see how any
New Zealand amateur clubs
could do it.
“If there was a fair chunk
of notice and you had the
opportunity to advise within the
community that this is what’s
happening, it might be different,
but there isn’t time.”
THE MAKE-UP of the finals for the
Christchurch Metro Premiership
one-day competition is all but
confirmed with two rounds to play.
Table-toppers Lancaster Park
are assured of a spot, following
Saturday’s three-wicket defeat of
Old Boys Collegians led by English
import Fynn Hudson-Prentice, who
took three for 27 and scored 30.
Behind them, all level on points,
are Old Boys, Burnside and St
Albans – the latter two picked up
wins over Riccarton and Heathcote
respectively.
Those three know they just need
one win from their last two games
to secure a spot in the top four –
starting with this weekend’s sixth
round.
Old Boys will play away to
winless East Shirley, Burnside host
Sydenham, and St Albans travel to
Lancaster Park.
The other match sees Heathcote
with two wins, and other results
going their way – play at Heathcote
RISING MOTOR racing star
Louis Sharp is set to become the
youngest ever driver to contest
the Race of Champions (ROC).
Sharp, 17, was born in England
but grew up in Christchurch and
will be team-mates with rally
star and boyhood hero Hayden
Paddon at the event in Sydney
on March 7-8.
The Race Of Champions
brings together some of the
world’s best drivers for a unique
head-to-head race in identical
cars to see who really is the
fastest.
Sharp has previously won the
2023 British F4 Championship
and 2024 GB3 titles and will
compete in FIA Formula 3 this
year for Rodin Motorsport.
Star names already confirmed
for the event include four-time
Formula 1 drivers champion
Sebastian Vettel, as well as stars
from across various motorsport
categories such as Valtteri
Bottas, Sebastien Loeb, Mick
Schumacher, Kurt Busch, Travis
Pastrana and Jamie Whincup.
“Teaming up with Hayden
Paddon to represent New Zealand
in our first-ever Nations
Cup at ROC – this is something
special,” Sharp told Speedcafe.
“It’s crazy to think I was born
the same year Sebastian Vettel won
his first ROC Nations Cup title,
and now I get to race against the
very icons I grew up admiring.
“I hope we see plenty of Kiwi
flags flying high in Sydney.”
It won’t be the first time the
pair have teamed up. Sharp,
then 12, acted as co-driver for
Paddon in the 2019 NZ Ashley
Forrest Rally Sprint, which they
won.
“It’s amazing to see his progression
and success,” Paddon
told Speedcafe.
“He looks destined to be F1 if
he continues doing what he is
doing.”
TOUCH CANTERBURY
Tēnā koutou katoa
Touch Canterbury continues to flourish as a hub for our region’s thriving
touch rugby community. Now with over 30 competitions on offer and
between 17,000 and 20,000 junior, youth, and senior players participating,
touch remains one of the most inclusive and accessible sports in Waitaha/
Canterbury, uniting people of all ages, ethnicities, and backgrounds. In
recent seasons we have had competitions affiliate from the wider region
including Methven, Darfield, Amberley, Timaru, Kaikoura & Hokitika.
While touch is a beloved social sport, Touch Canterbury also provides a
pathway for players to develop their skills and compete at the provincial
level. With a proud history spanning 35 years, including numerous national
titles, our focus remains on nurturing talent and creating a positive
environment where athletes can develop a love for the game, whilst
fostering a competitive edge for future successes.
Preparing for the 2025 Bunnings National Youth Touch
Championships
The 2025 Bunnings National Youth Touch Championships will return
to Bruce Pulman Park in Auckland, running from February 7th to 9th.
Around 70 provincial youth teams from across Aotearoa/New Zealand will
compete, making it the pinnacle event of the youth representative season.
Touch Canterbury is proud to field four strong teams in the U16 and U18
grades, with boys and girls squads in each category. This season, our
players will benefit from the expertise and dedication of the following
coaching teams:
• U16 Boys: Scott Grant, a Touch Canterbury legend with decades of
playing & coaching experience, and Dean Hikaka, an experienced
coach who recently moved from Taranaki to take up a teaching role
at St Bede’s College.
• U16 Girls: Jarad Pateman, a returning coach and experienced
masters representative, joined by Ross Soper, who steps up from the
U14s and brings a wealth of rugby coaching experience.
• U18 Boys: Paul Harris and Mike Davis return for their second
season together. Paul’s St Andrew’s College mixed team once again
reached the final at the recent NZ Secondary School Championships,
while Mike added a gold medal in the Over 40s grade at the 2024
Touch World Cup to his impressive career.
• U18 Girls: Mel Carson takes the reins this season. As Touch
Canterbury’s current board chair and a player-coach for the Over 40s
women’s representative team, Mel brings exceptional leadership and
passion to her role.
We would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to our exceptional team
managers: Anita, Cath, Chantelle, and Heather. Their dedication and
organisational skills are invaluable to the success of this campaign.
Acknowledging Our Supporters
The players have been hard at work since October, preparing for the
national stage putting in many hours on the training field and playing in
inter provincial tournaments. Their preparation included valuable game
time against our senior representative teams and participation in the
Te Wai Pounamu Tournament, where teams from all five South Island
provinces competed for the Provincial Cup.
We are deeply grateful to our sponsors, including
Affordable Cars, Joe’s Garage, and the individual
sponsors who support our players directly. Your
contributions ensure that our athletes have the
resources they need to train and compete at their
best. Touch remains a user-pays sport, and this
support is critical to the continued success of our teams.
Looking Ahead: Masters Nationals in Christchurch
Beyond the Youth Nationals, we are thrilled to host the 2025 Masters
Nationals at Ngā Puna Wai in Christchurch from March 13th to 15th. This
prestigious event will showcase the skill and dedication of some of the
country’s most experienced players, and we are proud to bring it to our
region.
Supporting Our Game
Touch Canterbury’s referee
development program remains a
standout, with over 20 referees set to
officiate at the Youth Nationals. Their
efforts ensure the high standards of
officiating that are vital to the sport’s
success.
To our supporters: you can keep an
eye on the teams results & watch live
streamed games at www.touchnz.co.nz
Games begin at 9 a.m. on Friday,
Welcome to the Big Time!
The TC U16 Girls Team this season has been
working really hard on their skills and
game understanding.
The coaches have been pushing
the girls to get out of their comfort
zone and really take on a growth
mindset.
This group is showing a lot of
commitment to doing this, with the
way they all have put in the extra effort at
trainings & in their own time.
Leading up to the national tournament the team
has bonded extremely well. A testament to the
positive attitude each player brings to the group.
We achieved excellent results at the recent Te
Youth National Tournament
Bruce Pulman Park, Auckland
February 7 - 9, 2025
Waipounamu tournament. Finishing a close
second to the old foe Otago.
The goal for nationals is to make
the top 8. With 7 girls returning
from last years team, motivation
is not an issue.
All the coaches ask for is that
every player gives a 100% and
puts their bodies on the line for each
other. A fantastic group of girls that are a
joy to coach.
We would also like to say a huge thank you to
all our Players’ sponsors, whānau and Touch
Canterbury for their support in getting the team
to Nationals. Ross Soper (Coach)
The Under 16 Boys team are proud to be representing
Canterbury, with our supporters and sponsors behind us, in our
pursuit of a national title at the upcoming Youth Touch Nationals
in Auckland. Coach Scott Grant is back for a second year and is
joined by Dean Hikaka who has been keen to get involved with
youth touch in Canterbury after moving here last year from
Taranaki. The team is a mix of new and existing players for the
grade, and the group has come together and connected well.
They have been training twice a week since early November,
along with each also playing for club and school teams. The boys
have been willing to work hard on developing their skills in various
aspects of the game. Touch demands exceptional fitness, vision,
teamwork and clear communication. We are looking forward to
bringing it all together, showcasing the talent of the team, and
playing a fast and dynamic style of game. We would like to take
this opportunity to extend our gratitude to those who have
provided us playing opportunities including other representative
teams whom we wish well for their campaigns. The superb
support from Shelly Johnstone and Shane Bowden are
invaluable, along with the Touch Canterbury board members who
enable this fantastic opportunity for our athletes. Last, but by no
build strong bonds both on and off the field. We
want to extend our heartfelt thanks to our sponsors,
whose generous contributions have made this
journey possible. Your support means the world to
us. To our whānau, school, and club coaches, thank
you for your guidance, encouragement, and belief
in these young athletes—it’s through your efforts
that they’ve grown into the players they are today. A
special shoutout to all those who have supported our
fundraising efforts. Your kindness and contributions
have brought us one step closer to performing on
the national stage. We also want to acknowledge the
phenomenal work of our manager, Heather Algar, who
has gone above and beyond to ensure everything runs
smoothly. The touch Canterbury staff - Shane Bowden
and Shelly Johnstone From organizing logistics to
providing unwavering support, no team can operate
without a quality manager! A special thank you to Shane
and Shelly from Touch Canterbury for their invaluable
support of all youth teams heading to Nationals. Your
dedication to fostering youth talent and ensuring the
smooth running of the program is truly appreciated. This
journey has been more than just about the sport—it’s
about the connections the girls have built as teammates
and friends. We are incredibly proud of their dedication
and cannot wait to see them give it their all in Auckland.
Thank you again to everyone who has played a part
in supporting this amazing team. Tū kaha, tū māia,
Taking the next step up
This week you are going to use the fitness
you have built up in the last 5 weeks. You should now
feel comfortable with the rhythm and technique of
the jogging movement and you can maintain this for
a longer period of time (this applies especially for the
beginners group). For the intermediate runners there is
a bit of pace change at the Wednesday run. Remember
the different training intensity zones?
Zone 1, easy: this is a pace whereby you are not too
puffed and the talk test is not even a test. At this stage
this is the zone you spent most of your time in as it will
give you some initial conditioning without the risk of
soreness or muscle strain.
Zone 2, steady: this is slightly faster than easy; it can
also be called a “firm” pace. It takes a bit more effort to
take an extra breath.
Zone 3, moderately hard: this is the pace where you
need that extra breath to finish your sentence. You can
still talk and jog at the same time but it becomes more
laborious so you tend to shut up and concentrate more
on your rhythm and holding your pace.
Zone 4 and 5 only apply to competitive runners and
are not recommended for beginners and recreational
runners. In these zones the oxygen supply does
not keep up with the oxygen demand so you get
really puffed to the extent that you cannot have a
conversation. This pace interferes with the enjoyment
of what you are doing and is not necessary if your main
goal is to finish the event rather then competing.
To achieve this goal you
need to develop some
awareness around the
basic requirements of
exercising for health and
fitness. First and foremost
this has to do with 3 key
principles:
1. How often do you train?
To improve your level of health and
fitness you will need to aim for 4 sessions
per week. 2 or 3 sessions per week will only
maintain what you have and 1 session per week
is definitely not sufficient.
2. How long are your sessions? The duration
of your sessions will generally build towards
between 30 and 50 minutes with one longer
session of 60-90 minutes.
3. What is the right intensity to train at? The
good thing about the programme is that all
your runs will be done at submaximal pace, also
called conversation pace. That means a pace
where you can still talk. If you can’t talk you are
going too fast and you are likely to come to a
grinding halt sooner or later.
This programme and accompanying information are written
as a guide only. If you are concerned about your health at
any stage please undergo a health check with your GP.
TIP oF The weeK
Many of you will be stretching vigorously
before and/or after your training session.
You do this because others are doing it
as well. There is not much evidence that a
conventional stretching routine prevents
injury or keeps you flexible. There is no
real need for stretching unless you have
a specific problem with particular muscle
groups and you have been advised by
a physiotherapist or doctor to stretch.
The most effective form of stretching for
flexibility is yoga, but you will have to do
it on a daily basis and for a minimum of 20
minutes and for most of us it will not make
us better runners.
Retro 300 leading Tank’s SUV invasion
A NEWCOMER with a quirky
name has rumbled onto our
shores in the form of Tank, an
impressive sub-brand of Chinese
manufacturer GWM.
GWM these days is nothing
like the mediocre Great Wall
Motors of 15 years ago. The
transformation of the company
since that time, especially over
the last five years, has been
breathtaking.
Heading the Tank assault on
our market for now are the 500
and 300 models with the latter a
retro-styled medium-sized SUV.
While new to our market, the
300 its been sold in South East
Asia, including China, since
2020. GWM has kept its powder
dry on a Tank invasion here
until now, preferring to wait for
the updated version.
It’s packed with features,
boasts good safety credentials
and four of the five models sold
here are powered by hybrid
engine technology. A turbo
diesel version will be added to
the range later this year, and
should appeal to both townies,
and country folk alike, along
Motoring with Bob Nettleton
with the hunting and fishing
brigade. The 300’s strong offroad
talents should tick a bunch
of boxes with this group of
potential buyers.
GWM is poised to hit the go
button on raft of new vehicles
for our market next year. Six
new models are under starters
orders for the first half of 2025
with more to follow for the back
half of the year.
The first model out of the
2025 blocks for GWM in New
Zealand is the new Cannon
which features a larger 135kW
and 480Nm 2.4 litre turbo-diesel
engine used in its larger sibling,
the Cannon Alpha and comes
with a 3500kg towing capacity.
The Tank 300, with its
distinctive retro SUV looks, was
a great choice to re-launch the
brand here with irrepressible
panache that’s hard to ignore.
Even harder to ignore are
the prices, starting at an
affordable $49,990 for the Lux
2.0 litre turbo petrol – the
hybrid commands a hefty $7k
premium.
In the range-topping Ultra,
the petrol vs hybrid price gap is a
more reasonable $5k. The Ultra
hybrid that rocked up for this
road test retails for $61,990 – a
decent amount of serious luxury
off-roader for the money. This
is amplified even further by a
seven-year unlimited kilometre
warranty with eight years
unlimited cover on the battery
Creating the under-bonnet
magic is a 2.0 litre turbo petrol
engine matched to an electric
motor, providing a collective
heft figure of 258kW of power
and 615Nm of torque. This is
generally well managed through
a nine-speed automatic and a
full-time AWD system.
These ingredients provide
plenty of shove from standing
starts and in the mid-rev range
to easily dispatch most driving
assignments, both on- and offroad.
This is no small achievement
in a vehicle weighing 2305kg,
making it one of the heftier
SUVs in its class. The hybrid
weighs 200kg more than the
petrol-only variant. However,
that is easily offset by the
hybrid’s extra 93kW of thrust.
Overall, the hybrid powertrain
delivers on smoothness and
responsiveness, and engine noise
is well-suppressed even on full
throttle, where you briefly enjoy
a satisfying sporty growl from
the engine.
Rating out of 10: Performance 8; Handling 6; Build Quality
7; Comfort 7; Space 7; Styling 7; Fuel Economy, road test
average consumption 9.5L/100km; Value for money 9; Safety,
ANCAP 5-star crash test rating.
Overall points out of 10: 7
The automatic gearbox is
a newbie, but gave a decent
account of itself, although it is
occasionally let down by odd
clunky moments of gearshift
indecision.
This is a good size SUV at
460mm long, 1930mm wide,
1903mm tall, and perched
on a 2750mm wheelbase – all
measurements that comfortably
shade competitors such as the
Mitsubishi Outlander.
The only figure where the
Tank 300 is lacking is the
modest 400 litres of load space
– well short of the Outlander’s
500+ litres. The passenger
compartment provides plenty
of space both front and rear and
feels light and roomy, despite the
dark hard plastic trim. Fit and
finish is as good as anything else
in this price range.
With a vast array of luxury
features, the Ultra lives up to its
billing as the premium member
of the Tank NZ platoon.
From the outside, it’s a sharplooking
beast with 18-inch alloy
wheels and a side steep for easy
access into the cabin. Once there
you are pampered by imitation
Nappa leather accented seats,
which for the driver have an
eight-way power adjustment plus
memory and massage function
for the two front seats. In-cabin
entertainment is managed via a
12.3-inch colour touch screen.
The Tank 300 doesn’t miss
a beat on safety with most of
the current crash protection
and avoidance systems on
duty, including adaptive cruise
control, 360 degree-view
camera, lane departure warning
and blind spot monitoring.
There is also a chirpy voiceactivated
and annoying drive
monitor system, that calls you
out on almost every minor
driving indiscretion. Once I
figured out how to turn the
system off, it stayed that way
during my time with the 300.
Increasingly manufacturers are
installing these systems to score
the best safety rating.
It’s a case of the tried-andtrue
with the suspension
– double wishbones at the
front and multi-link nonindependent
suspension in the
rear. This slightly more robust
arrangement enables the Tank
300 to traverse more challenging
terrain – something its relishes.
That said, none of my off-road
trekking put it under too much
pressure.
On sealed surfaces in both
town and open road driving, the
suspension was competent, but
not exceptional. At low speeds
over poorly maintained urban
roads, bumps felt more forcible
than would like.
Light and well-weighted
steering makes for a pleasant
enough drive although more
road feel and communication
with the drive would make it
even better.
REDEMPTION DOWNHILL
Christchurch’s newest Downhill track is more than a
race; it’s a story of resilience, renewal, and redemption.
Set against the stunning backdrop of Christchurch
Adventure Park, this track demands everything from the
world’s best riders: skill, precision, and an unbreakable
spirit. Featuring a mix of off-camber naturals,
Christchurch’s infamous moondust, step-ups, bridge
drops, and a punishing rock garden, this brand-new
trail is set to leave its mark.
Where and how to watch: There is awesome
spectator access and viewing points along most of
the Downhill trail, which you can access through
the Crankworx village at the CAP base building.
