Exciting Futurity News for 2025

New Categories!

Futurity 2025 is set to

return with some favourite

venues offering great facilities

and the usual Futurity

welcome!

For 2025 we are unveiling two new

evaluation categories – Native &

Indigenous Breeds, and Foreign Breeds.

The Native & Indigenous Breeds sections

will be for youngstock by approved

stallions from Defra approved studbooks,

and the (pilot) Foreign Breeds sections will

be for breeds originating from overseas,

where there is a Defra approved British

studbook taking care of the zootechnical

compliance aspects of those breeds (eg

Fjord, Saddlebred). We are looking at

this section as a pilot, as there are some

details to be worked through, but we want

to try to be as inclusive as possible in

response to popular requests.

Futurity entries will open on 1 July so

please bookmark the date, and we

look forward to seeing you and your

youngsters in the ring!

Germinal Products Imports

day before the germinal products

consignment arrives in GB.

Checks at the Border

Chilled semen from the EU is

subject to 100% documentary

checks at the BCP.

New process for 2025

Last year the Border Target

Operating Model was

introduced, bringing in new

controls for imports of germinal

products (semen, oocytes and

embryos) as well as a host of

other plant and animal products.

This meant checks at the Border,

at point of arrival in the country.

A process was negotiated to

speed up the transit through

Border Control Post (BCP) and

customs checks for time sensitive

chilled semen imports from the EU.

The main aspects of this process

have been agreed again for

2025, but with a few key

changes.

The Process

Germinal products from the

EU, European Free Trade

Area (EFTA) and European

Economic Area (EEA) require pre

notification, health certificates and

documentary checks.

This information will still be

notified by the person responsible

for the consignment in GB, on the

Import of Animals, Products, Food

& Feed system (IPAFFS) using a

Common Health Entry

Document “CHED”.

If the exporter (in the EU, EEA

or EFTA) created the health

certificate as a secure verifiable

PDF using TRACES, there will

be no need to send the original

paper copy with the consignment.

The exporter must send the

importer that secure verifiable

PDF once it has been signed by

the Competent Authority in that

country and you use this for

your IPAFFS notification.

If the exporter (in the EU,

EEA or EFTA) does not

use TRACES, the paper

copy must accompany

the consignment and

they must send you

an electronic copy to

upload to IPAFFS.

As in 2024, only parts 1

& 2 of the shortened health

certificates need to be uploaded

on to IPAFFS. Part 3 “Notes for

Completion” does not need to

be submitted.

In the longer term, the CHED will

support the use of digital health

certificates, which will provide

more detailed biosecurity risk

surveillance information.

The CHED needs to be

2024 Roundup

Featuring prominently in this issue’s round up is

consistent Juno Rose 23 (Erdento x Nissan Caretano

Z) bred by Gillian Blackburn and owned by James

Smith and Thomas Carruthers. At Valencia’s Autumn

Moura Tours, ridden by James Smith, she continued

her winning run, topping the 3* 1.45m. Fifty-three

competitors contended this speed class with James

and the 10-year-old mare outpacing the lot by 2.60

seconds. A rail down in Saturday’s 3* 1.45m speed

denied the pair a two second win, the four faults

dropping them down to a very creditable fourth.

The combination also picked up third as they battled

against 50 rivals in the 3* 1.45m speed where they

fi nished just 3.24 seconds off the pace.

They claimed a world ranking win in the 4* 1.45m but

had to share their win with Germany’s Kendra Claricia

Brinkop. Sixty-one competitors tackled the12-fence,

15-effort track and it was a hot competition, only

0.14 seconds separating the top three. Kendra set

an early target on Ma Belle and stayed fi rmly ahead

until James and Juno Rose 23 set off in pursuit in a

midway draw to dead-heat on time.

Moving on to Oliva Nova, the pair galloped ahead

in an early, hot Gold 1.45m speed, with Juno Rose

outpacing their 81 rivals to edge ahead by just 0.10

seconds. They almost made it a double but had

The London International Horse Show

provides a glittering conclusion to the

season, and this year’s fixture didn’t

disappoint as Britain’s top riders headed

to the show to contest the FEI World

Cup qualifier at London Excel.

Concluding their outstanding

breakthrough year, Becky Moody

was star of the show on Wednesday

18 December, bringing her own and

Jo Cooper’s home-bred wonder

Jagerbomb to the top step of the

podium in the Grand Prix competition.

The duo scored 76.696% from a

top panel of judges. In the Freestyle

qualifier, the combination debuted

new music by The Beetles and were

rewarded with a score of 80.160%,

placing them in fourth behind three of

Europe’s top combinations, including

Britain’s Lottie Fry and Glamourdale who

claimed the music victory.

British Dressage News

British prospects were a key aspect of

the largest British Dressage training

fixture of the year too, which concluded

the domestic calendar of events in

November 2024. Also from the stable

of Becky Moody, the audience were

treated to a preview of a potential

future star in San Isidro (Danone I x

Special D). Presented by Anna Burns,

the six-year-old AES registered mare

took part in the first session on day one,

trained by Becky herself as she talked

about opportunities for BD Youth riders.

Paralympic medallist Sophie Wells

teamed up with pupil Izzy Palmer, who

presented another one-to-watch in Cat

Austin’s Adiva Stud prospect, Last Gift

(Governor x Fabriano). Izzy took on the

ride of ‘Queenie’ in November 2023

and have since enjoyed international

success, with the aim in 2025 of

returning to the international arena with

a close eye on the FEI Para

European Championships.

on speed in this 85-strong class, with

James and Juno Rose slipping into the

runner-up spot 0.57 seconds behind the

winner, The Netherlands’ Sanne Thijssen

on Cupcake Z.

We have also seen a run of results for

Vermento (Argento x Skippy II) bred by

John Whitaker.

Ridden by Robert Whitaker, Vermento,

with an initial clear, was in the reckoning

in the Longines FEI World Cup Qualifier in

Madrid. However, four faults second time

out in the 13-horse decider dropped them

down to ninth.

Recently victorious in Helsinki (FIN),

Robert and Vermento chased hard from

final draw of the 14-horse jump-off, but

despite calling upon the 11-year-olds

huge stride, his time of 36.56 wasn’t

enough to knock the leader off the

podium at the FEI Jumping World Cup in

A Coruña, Spain.

Heading next to the London International

Horse Show, in London’s ExCeL Arena

for the Longines FEI Jumping World

Cup, Robert and Vemento finished the

podium placings in third. Hungry for his

second win of the season and aware of

what was required here tonight to do so,

Whitaker set sail but when the first fence

hit the floor, his chances of victory were

gone. He finished on four faults in 37.89

to take the final podium position in what

has been an incredible run of form for

himself and homebred stallion Vermento.

FUTURITY SIRE RANKINGS

Every year Competition Stallions celebrate the success of the top ranking Futurity

stallions, which includes not only a list of stallions of the highest scoring offspring

of the 2024 season, but also the All Time Futurity Sire Rankings. These rankings

give an excellent indication of a stallion’s overall consistency and performance. Only

stallions with 5 offspring or more are entered in these rankings which are based

on the average of the top 5 scores. Where stallions are tied in position, the overall

average of all entries is taken into account, followed by the highest overall score

This year saw a few very interesting developments that give useful indications to

breeders for this year’s stallion choices. Stallions with offspring from last year that

have been added to their rankings calculations are highlighted in purple

The biggest development

was to be found in the Pony

Stallions rankings which saw

Rotherwood Signature taking

top spot in the All Time Top 10

Rankings for the very first time.

Rotherwood Signature has sired

outstanding showjumping ponies

with remarkable consistency. His

success as a Futurity progenitor is

largely down to his ability to pass

on the type of movement and

athleticism usually associated with

larger horses, but in a pony size.

In the Eventing Stallion Rankings

Timolin maintained his top

position for another year, with

another set of excellent results

to add to his impressive record.

Chilli Morning and Grafenstolz

maintained their strong placings

respectively in 2nd and 3rd place.

An interesting new development

is the entry of Future Guilty

Pleasure into the Top 10 in a big

jump from 23rd place in 2023.

The fact that he achieved this with

relatively fewer offspring is all the

more remarkable.

In the showjumping rankings a

similar observation can be F

made about Chrysler Key

who despite having had only

7 offspring at the Futurity has

nevertheless maintained his

Top 10 spot, closely followed by

Diarado who has moved slightly

up the rankings. The top placings

continue to be held by the

Futurity legends Lauriston

and Silvester.

In the dressage rankings the

great British success stories

of Wavavoom, Dimaggio and

Timolin maintained their placings

at the very top. An interesting new

development is Vitalis who made

the biggest jump up the rankings

this year from position 48 to 5th

place. This achievement is again

remarkable given that it comes

from only 10 Futurity entries.

The full stallion rankings are

published in the Competition

Stallions Guide and will also be

uploaded to the British Breeding

website. ●

In October the

classes for PRE’s and partbred PRE’s

The Championships have experienced

participation since its introduction in 2017.

Now with over 1,000 combinations

taking part, the Championship fi nale

Also in October, the MCI European

Championships were held at a super

represent GB, with every level covered

from Young Horse tests up to Grand Prix.

representing their country. It’s a great

opportunity to unite with like-minded

people who appreciate the majesty and

beauty of the PRE and PSL horses.

In addition, in October GB PRE was

delighted to host a body condition

by the Horse Trust and the University

kindly hosted the event at Premier

delegates from GB PRE attended a

classroom session on the importance of

keeping horses in a healthy body weight,

the location of fatty deposits and the

harms it can cause. This was followed by

a practical tutorial where everyone had

the opportunity to Body Condition Score

several different horses, discuss their

any questions.

The horses were then individually

Above WAHO convention 2019 - dummy foal cure. Photo Anne Brown.

Arab Horse Society members off to

Breeding conference in the UAE

by Anne Brown, Arab Horse Society Premium Performance Scheme

In the depths of a British winter, the

Arabian horse community looks

forward to the biennial conference of

the World Arab Horse Organization to

be held in Abu Dhabi this year. The Arab

Horse Society helped create WAHO in

1974 and has seen it grow to over 100

member countries.

The Gulf hospitality is legendary, so all

are guaranteed a warm welcome and

some unmissable lectures in April.

Past speakers have introduced us to the

Domperidone injection that can encourage

any mare, even a maiden, to produce milk

if it is needed for an orphan foal.

At the 2019 WAHO conference in

Australia, American ‘wonder woman’

Cindy Reich awed us fi rst with foal

resuscitation techniques, then with the

cure for ‘dummy foal’ syndrome (neonatal

maladjustment syndrome). The new-born

may circle the stall, chew on the walls,

but show no interest in suckling. There is

not even a suckle refl ex to bottle feeding.

These symptoms can be evident at birth

or in the fi rst 24-48 hours after birth.

Previously, it was thought that these foals

suffered from a lack of oxygen during the

birth process.

However, Dr. John Madigan at the

University of California, Davis, had an

astonishing new perspective on what

a ‘dummy’ foal might be experiencing.

He imitated the symptoms of neonatal

maladjustment syndrome in healthy

new-borns. He gave them a neural

steroid that is in high concentrations in a

foal’s brain while in utero. Once the foal

struggles through the birthing process,

these neural steroids decrease rapidly.

He postulated that these neural steroids

are what keep the foal’s body quiet

inside the mare. After birth, the steroids

decrease and the foal becomes active

and displays normal behaviour – and an

interest in the milk bar!

Dr. Madigan theorised that in dummy

foals, something interfered with the

brain’s recognition of going through the

birth process, keeping the steroid level

high. He then devised a process called

the ‘foal squeeze’ to simulate the forces

on the foal’s body when going through

the birth canal. This was to stimulate

the foal’s brain to recognise that it has

gone through the birthing process and to

cause the steroid level to drop.

Dr. Madigan uses a simple pressure

device using a rope wrapped around

the foal’s chest and ribcage. When the

rope is properly applied, the foal will

drop to the ground (or straw bed) almost

immediately. Pressure is maintained on

the rope for 20 minutes, roughly the time

the birth takes from entering the birth

canal. When the rope is removed, the

foal will generally get up and go to the

mare and begin nursing. In essence, it

has been ‘rebirthed’ and the brain has

been stimulated to decrease the neural

steroids and so to ‘wake up’ the foal.

These conferences are full of such

valuable lectures. Around them,

the social events in April will include

three very special days of visits to the

major studs in Abu Dhabi, Ajman, Dubai

and Sharjah. Other tours offer trips to

wildlife sanctuaries, the palm oasis of Al

Ain and an overnight stay on the edge of

the Empty Quarter, the Rub’ al Khali, with

a night under the desert skies.

Camel racing and horse racing are

also likely to be on the agenda! There

is always a valuable inter-change

of experiences and ideas between

breeders.

Anyone wishing to join WAHO to attend

the conference as a member can contact

the office at Newbarn Farmhouse,

Forthampton, Gloucestershire GL19 4QD

or ring 01684 274455.

Closer to home, Arab breeders in Britain

are preparing for another busy season,

with benefits for mare owners using AHS

Endurance, Dressage and many other

ridden disciplines.

SPSS Grading is the assessment of

SPSS Registered (ie passported or

overstamped) ponies and small horses

In all cases, our expert judges are looking

at conformation, paces, temperament and

performance in order to assess suitability...

(up to 158cm) to see if they meet the

standards for acceptance into one of

the SPSS Studbooks. Gradings are held

each year, normally between August &

October, and entrants must be at least

2 years old to be presented for grading

(there is no upper age limit).

Stallions must be presented and

accepted at a SPSS stallion grading

event and then meet certain post-grading

criteria, including an acceptable vet

assessment for breeding, a DNA profile

and, if necessary, a height certificate

(stallions on or near the 158cm height

limit). Once all these are achieved,

you can then issue SPSS Covering

Certificates. See the flow charts which

summarise the process.

Mares are also presented for SPSS

Grading in-person and we anticipate

that once again in 2025 we will offer

SPSS Mare Grading at all in-person

Futurity Evaluation venues. Mares

gain permanent graded status into the

appropriate Mare Studbook depending

on their score and completeness of

pedigree. Again see the flow

BRITISH HANOVERIAN

Stallion Licencing Report

Held in October at Hothorpe, Leicestershire. Report

by Katy Holder-Vale, Chairman of the BHHS and

International Judge

The month of October marked a

significant event for our British

Hanoverian community with

the stallion licensing taking place

at Hopthorpe, Leicestershire. This

prestigious event showcased the

exceptional quality and potential of our

young stallions.

The first stallion to be presented

was the two-year-old ‘So Skywalker,’

bred and owned by Elena Baturina.

This promising young stallion, sired

by So Unique and out of a dam by

Bon Coeur and further back by Fürst

Nymphenburg, was expertly prepared

and presented by Alejandro Fariña

Rodriguez. I have fond memories of

branding his mother as a foal, and

it was heartening to see such a fine

progeny. Skywalker exhibited a very

modern and elegant type, showing

an elastic trot and an uphill canter,

characterized by good airtime with the

hindlegs. His movement was both fluid

and expressive.

Dressage, and we eagerly anticipate

his career progression.

We were once again honoured by

the presence of Dirk Mehnert from

the Hannoveraner Verband e.V. Dirk,

a respected vet and a long-standing

judge for the stallion licensing

commission, brought his wealth of

knowledge and experience to our

event, ensuring that the evaluations

were thorough and of the highest

standard.

It was a privilege to oversee such

an event, witnessing the culmination of

careful breeding, expert preparation,

and the promising potential of our

young stallions. As Chairman of the

BHHS and an International Judge, I

am confident that both ‘So Skywalker’

and ‘Daydream Believer’ will make

significant contributions to the future of

British Hanoverian breeding. ●

pleasure of evaluating the threeyear-old

‘Daydream Believer,’ bred

Following Skywalker, we had the

‘Daydream Believer,’ bred and

stallion, sired by Dream Boy and out of

Hamberina (Silbermond x Wifawander

Darren Hicks. Daydream Believer stood

out with his well-developed size and

substance. Although he possesses a

somewhat old-fashioned type, this is

exactly what some of our breeders

are looking for—stallions with bone,

size, and quality. His training and

bravery, especially given his age, were

commendable, and he demonstrated

exceptional rideability under saddle.

Celebrating AES Success

AT THE 2024 BRITISH BREEDING

BAILEYS HORSE FEEDS FUTURITY

We are incredibly proud of the many

It is wonderful to see such quality and

with some of our top breeders this year

and hear about their experiences.

Continued Success in

Showjumping Breeding

Among our many exciting showjumping

breeders, we are delighted to have

Amelia Hope Waterhouse, a real star for

the future. Amelia is a young breeder

with big ambitions and the strategy

and determination it takes to get to

the very top. She also represented our

studbook at the WBFSH International

Young Breeders World Championships

2024 in Denmark, where she came 8th

in the individual rankings, a fantastic

achievement, given that this was her fi rst

time and she managed to beat a strong

fi eld of highly experienced competitors.

Amelia achieved the incredible accolade

of having bred the highest scoring Futurity

entry of the entire 2024 series, across all

ages, disciplines and studbooks in Hope

House Dark and Stormy (Numero Uno

x Milton Mojito) who gained a fantastic

score of 9.35. She also achieved another

Futurity Elite with Hope House Mimosa

(Utamaro d’Ecaussines Z x Mjirina) who

impressed with a lovely score of 9.05,

ending up ranked 17th overall. Her

success is no coincidence, but the result

of meticulous research and planning:

“I’m absolutely delighted with the success

of both of my foals in this year’s British

Breeding Futurity, with the highlight of

course being our superstar Hope House

Dark & Stormy. I put a lot of emphasis on

using linear scoring and genetic profiling

to assess both the conformation and

movement of my mares and the stallions I

pair them with in order to produce the best

equine athletes possible. This year’s results

just go to show that in depth evaluation of

each horse paired with the natural talents of

both dam and stallion produce near perfect

results. As a competitive rider myself, horses

with correct movement and conformation

that can perform to the best of their ability

and also have the long and healthy careers

is what every breeder should be striving for.”

The second highest scoring showjumper

of the series was presented by Futurity

fi rst timer Leigh Reynolds of Lancaster

Sport Horses. Lancaster Bomber (Echo van

het Neerenbosch x Lancaster Angelique

Infi nity) scored a superb 9.2 Elite and

fi nished up ranked 7th overall. Leigh is

very careful in the selection of mares and

stallions, believing that conformation is

key to increasing longevity: “With the help

of things like the British Breeding Futurity

our aim is to breed top sport horses back

in Great Britain. Next season we will be

foaling 4 mares down with the aim to

showcase them at the Futurity events.”

Great showjumpers come in all sizes,

which is something Sharon Whiteway

has shown in her 3 years of attending the

Futurity with incredible consistency: “We

started breeding ponies from grade A

showjumping mares as we couldn’t fi nd

quality novice ponies in the UK for clients

and when we asked around nobody was

really breeding them with show jumping

in mind.” HSS Tell Me Straight achieved

a lovely Elite score of 9.15, ranking 11th

overall and being the highest ranked

Pony of the 2024 series. He is one in a

line of Futurity Elite jumping ponies by

the great Rotherwood Signature who

this year tops the All Time Futurity Sire

Rankings for Sports Ponies for the very fi rst

time. Sharon has been part of his journey

from the outset: “I work very closely with

Trudy Goulding at End House Stud and

we decided to use her pony stallion

Rotherwood Signature - who my daughter

took to his grading many years ago! He

is the third one from this combination and

they prove that breeding is unpredictablewe

have a grey with blue eyes which will

be a 138 and a bay and now a chestnut!

What all three have in common is fabulous

conformation they look like pony sized

horses which is wonderful but seem to

have the pony brain which is often not as

wonderful as they are into everything!”

Impressive Achievements for AES

Dressage Breeders

AES Dressage breeders have continued

to invest in great quality using a mixture

of foreign and UK based stallions on

exceptional mares to achieve type,

conformation and movement. It is

particularly gratifying to see this hard

work rewarded by all of the physical

Futurity dressage entries in the Top 20

going to AES breeders. We caught up

with a few to discuss the secret behind

their success.

The two top dressage entries of the 2024

physical series were tied on equal Elite

scores of 9.275. Woodcroft Karissimo

was bred by in partnership by Virginia

Cook and Bernadette O’Sullivan of

Woodcroft Stud and registered

in the Select AES Studbook.

She is by Kjento, 6YO World

Champion Dressage in

2021, and out of the lovely

mare Woodcroft Bali (by

Belissimo M). Kari will be

produced by Woodcroft

Stud, with Young Horse

championships as their next

goal. Says Ginny: “We are

currently deciding on a stallion for

Bali and the praise both Kari and Bali

received from the Futurity judges supports

our aspiration for future foals.”

Kellythorpes Virali was bred by

Lisha Leeman of Kellythorpe

Stud. She is by Vitalis out

of a Johnson mare who

previously had a lovely

high gold scoring fi lly by

Glamourdale. For Lisha,

breeding is a family affair:

“My father was a breeder of

coloured traditional horses,

the knowledge I have of horses

and breeding I gained from him. I

fell in love with horses at a very young

age and my fondest memories as a child

was helping to foal the mares with my

dad. I have been very fortunate to be

able to set up a small family stud of my

own with my daughter Janay, the dream

was to breed top quality show horses to

compete at the Horse of the Year Show

and one day trot the centre line.

Below: Woodcroft Karissimo. Above inset top: Miss

Jackson. Above inset bottom: Kellythorpes Virali.

That dream came true having having won

some major prestigious accolades that

we are extremely proud of. My ambition

grew with the success we have had to

then continue to venture into dressage

breeding, to hopefully breed a quality foal

worthy to go to the futurity. We are proud

to have bred ‘Kellythorpes Virali’ by Vitalis

- our second dressage foal from the dam

and was blown away of our overall score

at the futurity, It felt pretty amazing!

We are very excited for her future, our

plan is to return our mare back to Vitalis

this year to hopefully breed a colt for

stallion potential.”

Another result to celebrate is the Elite

score of 9.25 for Lilling Hall Early Bird by

Erdinger out of Dawn Chorus. Her

breeder Olwyn Coope also

bred the mother and is highly

experienced. This year she

took the plunge of entering

the Futurity for the very fi rst

time, and what a fabulous

way to start! Olwyn is now

breeding in partnership

with AES Young Breeder

and young dressage rider

Ava Fowler showing that the

sport and breeding can really come

together and work in symbiosis.

Nobody knows this better than Paul

Hayer of Team Hayler Dressage. Paul

and his family strongly focus on

breeding dressage horses

with movement and ability,

from proven performance

lines. With an excellent

team and set up at home

they can focus on the

correct production of their

youngsters and build that

all important bridge with the

sport. It is particularly nice to

see that they use British based

stallions, which really paid off in

Firefl y, by Faustinus, who gained a highly

impressive Elite score of 9.2.

Every breeders has a unique story to tell,

and Matt James, breeders of Clapton

Banks Beaujolais Nouveau by the UK

based stallion Nico out of Honesty is no

exception. Her lovely Futurity Elite of 9.15,

was hard won, as Matt tells us:

“I tried and failed at breeding quite a few

years ago and decided after the loss of

a mare and foal, never again. We then

acquired a lovely little thoroughbred mare,

and once she fi nished her work retired her

as a broodmare. I was adamant I wanted

the foal to socialise, and the mare to

have company in the fi eld so I purchased

another mare to run alongside. There

have been many setbacks along the way.

Above: Bandanyas.

Last year we had an arrival of a beautiful

bay fi lly from a much cherished mare we

competed to advanced medium dressage

who had helped my partner up the ladder

in dressage. Unfortunately, this was short

lived as she was a septic dummy foal and

we had to say goodbye at 36 hours old.

One week later ‘Boujie’ arrived, another

dummy foal albeit mild. With daily vet visits

from Pinkham equine for the next week

or so, she gained strength and attitude a

plenty. I am ecstatic she had such a good

score at the futurity, especially as a novice

myself, and have high hopes for her future.

We are looking forward to foaling two

mares again this year, one of which will

be sired by an exciting young stallion and

his fi rst crop of foals, and will hopefully be

showcased at the futurity later this year.”

Also in the Top 20 Futurity placings was

Bandanyas by Baron out of Woodlander

Dixie Chick from the breeding of Liz Ball

at Bramble Stud. Liz has a great eye for

quality and assembled an exceptional

but also diverse line of mares from

which she breeds high quality offspring

with exceptional consistency, having

numerous licensed stallions to her name.

In the virtual series, the second highest

placed dressage entry was Miss Jackson,

bred by Grace Wilson. This result is all the

more pleasing as she is out of two British

bred horses. Her sire Watch Me Now by

Wolkenderry is owned by Grace herself.

This is his fi rst foal and Grace is rightly

thrilled with the result.

AES Eventing Breeder Continue

to Make an Impact

AES Eventing breeders have become

known for producing athletic horses with

beautiful type and world-class movement.

We are delighted that we have a very

strong group of highly committed and

knowledgeable eventing breeders , as

well as new breeders bringing their own

fresh ideas and inspiration.

The highest placed of the AES eventing

entries was Boyces Aurora from Futurity

first timer Jessica Turner. This lovely filly

out of Jalapeno brings the interesting

blood of Duplexx a stallion we found

really stamps his stock with type and

athleticism. With her fantastic Elite score

of 9.275, she shares 3rd place with our

highest scoring dressage entries, proving

yet again that newcomers can really hold

their own among our many skilful and

talented

Futurity

breeders.

Jessica

tells us

more:

“We knew

that we

had bred

something

special, but it was great to have the

futurity to affirm our thoughts. Our aim

was to breed a horse with the attributes

to excel in all disciplines. We couldn’t

have wished for a better type.”

It really seems that no Futurity write up

would be complete without mentioning

the latest achievements to come from

the breeding of Julia Hodkin at Future

Sport Horses. Julia combines an

uncompromising commitment to pedigree

and performance with her unique

inspiration and eye for detail that time and

time again delivers exceptional type.

Future Icy Pleasure scored a highly

impressive 9.175. She is the latest product

of Futurity legend Future Guilty Pleasure

in combination with the Contendro I

daughter Iniki. Julia tells us more:

“We are thrilled with this filly who is a

full sister to the 2020 Futurity National

Eventing Champion ‘Future Iconic

Pleasure’, and the 2021 Futurity National

Res. Champion Event Foal ‘Future Idyllic

Pleasure’, both who were purchased for

CCI5* riders. The dam line is one of the

KWPN Studbook best mare lines which

amongst others produced the Olympic

showjumpers ‘Hickstead’ and ‘Promise Me’

as well as Yasmin Ingham’s CCI4* eventer

‘Nightline’. We look forward to this filly

Right: Future Icy

Pleasure.

being produced

for sport in the

coming years.”

Julia achieved

a second Elite in Future Santiago Spice,

an embryo transfer foal from the great

Donthargos out of performance mare

Santiago Bay:

‘This is an exciting filly to have been able

to produce out of the top Burghley CCI5*

mare and multiple CCI4* winner ‘Santiago

Bay’ ridden by Gemma Stevens. We’re

very grateful to Caroline Teltsch, owner of

Santiago Bay, for allowing us to breed a

foal from her and we will be retaining this

filly for our own breeding programme.”

Another super eventing result came

for Radley Wood Zendaya by the great

Zirocco Blue out of a Tyson mare. This

very elegant foal was bred by Alison

Walshe who breeds a small number of

dressage and eventing foals, having

invested in exceptional motherliness

and matching them with stallions known

to delivery performance. This is Alison’s

second time at the Futurity and her first

Elite, having previously achieved some

very nice high Gold scores. ●

Stallion Event 2025

STALLION EVENT 2025

Welcome

Thanks to our Sponsors

We are delighted to bring you the 2025 Stallion Event at Addington Equestrian, the 15th

Event.

This year we have combined the use of the venue with the Anglo European Studbook

holding a Stallion Licensing/Grading assessment on the Friday afternoon and fi nishing in

the main arena fi rst thing Saturday morning before the main stallion event starts.

This will provide the opportunity for these young stallions to be in such an atmosphere

for their fi rst time and be seen for the fi rst time. We aim to have a short parade of all the

recently Licensed and Graded stallions.

We then start the Stallion Event with the dressage stallions. We will then have a slightly

longer break before the jumping and eventing stallions after lunch.

During the break we will be opening the stables from 12.30-2pm giving you all plenty of

time to visit the stables, view the stallions close up and discuss your mare plans with the

stallion owners.

The stables will close after the lunch break. The bell will ring at 2pm announcing the

closing of the stables giving time to get up to the International Arena in time for the fi rst

stallion starting at 2.15pm.

Please do visit our specialist breeding Trade Stand holders who are available throughout

the day in the arena. We have a full list of the Tradestands with their contact details on a

following page for your reference. Most importantly, huge thanks to all the stallion owners

travelling and presenting their stallions. Finally. Massive thanks to our title sponsor Baileys

Horse Feeds for their continued support, without their contribution these events would be

diffi cult to hold.

We would also like to thank all our other supporters who without their hard work this event

Tomatillo

Tomatillo is a genetic clone of

Tamarillo, the well-known Event horse,

long term member of the British team

and winner of the Badminton and

Burghley four star Events. Because

Tamarillo, like most Eventers, was a

gelding he has been cloned so that

his special genes will not be lost. The

story of the cloning can be read

on the Biddesden website - click on

NEWS and then on PRESS.

23

Tamarillo had particular merits as a

performance horse which made him

worthy to be cloned: he was a

big mover with a light natural

cadence, he was extremely tough

and agile in testing conditions and he

seemed to fi nd the big fences easy.

Tarnik, Tamarillo’s sire, was a Polish

Anglo Arab He was an extremely

bold and tough horse and won the

A.H.S. Marathon Race in 1977.

Tomatillo is competing under BE Rules

and now, ridden by Aaron Millar, he

has 64 points and has moved

up to 4* level with a double clear

and 8th place at Ballendenisk iand

also clear at Little Donwham.

EVENTING STALLIONS In Association with Sponsored by

Ynslyns Orlando

1999 Bay

Eventing

Orlando is not your traditional

Section D - he is able to offer bone

and substance to a lighter TB or WB

mare whilst also being able to refi ne

a more traditional D or heavier mare.

This combined with his exceptional

temperament and versatility under

saddle means that he is always a

good choice for any mare. And you

get the added bonus of being able

to predict the colour of your foal! A

chestnut mare will always guarantee

a palomino, whereas a bay or

black mare can produce a buckskin,

palomino or smokey black foal.

Orlando is WPCS licensed and is

graded with the SPSS, taking Central

Grading Champion for 2020 and

Reserve Champion for Britain 2020.

He is also the fi rst Section D in AES

history to be graded with the society

- a true sports D! A true allrounder

himself, Orlando regularly competes

in dressage, showjumping and

eventing as well as participating in

hunting, fun rides, working equitation

and even leading a team chase!

He is the type of stallion who will

sire a foal who can go out and do

anything and be competitive.

beginning of May. She is

currently turned out during

the day and in at night

and gets ad lib haylage

in the stable. She holds

her weight really well so

I’m only feeding her half

a scoop of low energy

mix twice a day but what

should I feed as her foaling

date approaches?

Since the development of the

foetus begins at conception, a

mare should ideally receive a fully

balanced diet from then on and

throughout pregnancy. Minerals,

in particular, are essential in

the mare’s diet as they are vital

components of the cells and

tissues of the developing foal.

Research has also shown that

the foetus accumulates stores

of minerals in its liver, on which

it can draw once it is born and

growing very rapidly. Without

these reserves, Developmental

Orthopaedic Disease (DOD) can

occur as the foal grows.

Although your mare’s condition

suggests a low energy feed, this

will not contain sufficient vitamins

and minerals, especially when fed

below recommended levels, so

a specially formulated stud feed

is the best option throughout

pregnancy. For good-doers, like

yours, choose a stud balancer to

provide these essential nutrients

but without the unwanted calories

of a traditional stud & youngstock

mix or cube.

Encouraging a

steady growth

rate is also

essential to help

avoid problems

which affect

the growing

skeleton.

The balancer is fed in relatively

small quantities but her demands

will increase, once the foal is born

and she is lactating, so check the

feeding recommendations and

increase accordingly. As milk

production requires calories, you

may find you need to change to

a stud mix or cube to meet the

increased energy demands and

help your mare maintain condition.

When should I start to give

my foal his own hard feed?

Foals are born with increased levels

of lactase to digest milk but, as they

grow, levels gradually decline while

those of fibre- and cereal-digesting

enzymes, increase. By 3 to 4

months of age the foal can therefore

be introduced to concentrate feed

to encourage the gradual change

of the digestive system and help

reduce the risk of any upsets, and

associated drop of condition,

when the milk supply is removed

at weaning.

Encouraging a steady growth rate

is also essential to help avoid

problems which affect the growing

skeleton and associated tissues

and could ultimately have an effect

on a foal’s current and future

soundness. So, if your foal holds

his condition well while suckling, a

specially formulated stud balancer

is ideal and should be introduced

from 3 months of age, to provide

essential protein, vitamins and

minerals to support growth but

with a minimal calorie content.

If he needs some help maintaining

condition, a milk-based creep feed

can be given up to 4 months of

age before gradually changing to

a stud mix or cube. Whichever

feed you choose, introduce it

slowly, a handful at a time, and

build up the manufacturer’s

recommended levels for the

foal’s age and estimated mature

bodyweight. At the time of

weaning, your foal should then be

receiving sufficient nutrients from a

stud ration to maintain weight and

consistent growth when the milk

supply is removed at weaning.

Feeding | Feature

I want to show my mare

and foal, but the mare is

prone to dropping weight

after foaling. What should

I feed the mare to prevent

her losing condition while

suckling the foal?

The lactating mare needs good

sources of energy and protein for

her to produce enough nutritious

milk to support the foal, particularly

during its first three months when

the growth rate is especially

rapid. On foaling, a mare’s energy

requirements increase by as

much as 44% and, if not met, her

body draws on its own reserves

resulting in a loss of condition.

Milk production and quality will

also be affected, which can

ultimately compromise the health

and growth rate of the foal.

So, keep an eye on your

mare’s condition throughout

pregnancy and establish her

on the recommended amount

of a stud mix or cube, before

foaling. These feeds supply

the necessary elevated levels

of vitamins, minerals and quality

protein to support foetal growth

and milk quality along with calories

to maintain condition and milk

production. After foaling, increase

the amount fed, according to the

manufacturer’s recommendations

for your mare’s bodyweight, and

give in as many small meals as

possible, especially if your mare’s

appetite is limited.

Ensure her grazing is as good as

possible and supplement with soft

leafy hay or haylage, if necessary.

Should you find your mare can’t

or won’t eat the recommended

amount of hard feed, top up her

diet with a

stud balancer

to ensure

essential

nutrient levels

are maintained. For

additional non-heating

calories in a small volume, add

200 – 500ml of vegetable oil per

day or up to 1.5kg of a specially

formulated high oil supplement.

This should also put a shine on her

coat ready for the show ring!

My 8 month old

Warmblood filly was

weaned in the autumn and

is turned out during the

day and comes in at night.

I want to present her at

the Futurity Evaluations,

and potentially show her

in-hand in the spring, but

I’m not really sure what to

feed her to help keep her

in good condition without

having growth problems.

There is often a reluctance to feed

youngsters, particularly those who

are naturally good-doers, for fear

of causing growth problems, with

protein wrongly labelled

as the culprit. It is now

recognised that it is a

high energy (calorie)

intake, with insufficient

minerals, which

can lead to these

problems, as this

creates an increased

rate of growth without

the nutrients required to build the

tissues to support the growth.

Monitoring your filly’s growth, by

regular weightaping and plotting

the rate of growth on a chart, can

act as an early warning system

to highlight potential growthrelated

problems. Youngsters

that are growing very rapidly will

produce an upright curve which

is an indication that the energy

content of the diet may need to be

reduced. Conversely, a very flat

curve suggests that the filly is not

growing and would benefit from

additional calories, which can be

supplied by a traditional stud feed.

The basis of your filly’s diet should

be ad lib forage (grass and hay or

haylage) then, depending on her

condition, choose a stud ration to

supply the additional nutrients to

support growth. If you find she is

a good-doer and gets sufficient

calories to maintain condition from

her forage, she should thrive on a

specially formulated stud balancer

which will provide essential

nutrients but no additional

calories. This will support even,

correct growth as well as muscle

tone, top line and coat shine,

without going to her waistline.

Alternatively, if as the winter

progresses, you find she needs

more calories to keep the weight

on, a stud/youngstock mix or

cube will supply both these

and the necessary balance of

vitamins, minerals and quality

protein. These, or a specially

formulated sales or show prep

mix for youngsters, are preferable

to a conditioning feed designed

for adult horses, as this would

not have sufficient supporting

nutrients (vitamins and minerals, in

particular) for a growing youngster.

Keeping a regular eye on your

filly’s bodyweight, as suggested,

will help you decide which feed to

choose and how much to feed.

Wormer resistance versus

Getting the balance right with young horses

By Claire Shand, SQP and Director at Westgate Labs

Warnings about wormer

resistance and the

need to give fewer

wormers abound - and rightly so.

Every year new research papers

highlight the decreasing efficacy

of the five chemicals we have

licenced to treat horse parasites

in the UK. Yet where parasite

burdens do occur, it’s wise to

treat in a timely manner to guard

against the potentially devastating

disease that worm infection can

cause in horses.

Assessing Your Horse’s Parasite Risk Profile

Resistance means we can no

longer give a wormer and simply

expect it to work. We need to

be savvy about selecting the

correct chemical for the specific

parasite we’re looking to treat,

rather than going in with a broadbrush

approach. Regular testing

is therefore recommended to

identify type of parasite and

treatment required. It can also help

us measure whether the treatment

has been effective or whether

there is resistance present.

For example, young horses are

particularly prone to ascarid

infection. These large, creamy

white worms have a migratory

phase to the lungs where they

can cause long lasting respiratory

damage. These are later coughed

up and return to the intestinal F

tract to breed where they are

associated with infl ammation,

blockages and colics. The older

style wormers, fenbendazole

and pyrantel, are much more

effective against these parasites

than the more modern ivermectin

and moxidectin chemicals to

which ascarids have developed

resistance.

Conversely there is a lot of

small redworm resistance to

fenbendazole and pyrantel

chemicals. If treating these

parasites, ivermectin and

moxidectin would usually be

the preferred choice where no

resistance testing had been

done. This with the caveat that

we try to reserve moxidectin for

targeting encysted larval stages

of the small redworm as it is a

key medicine to targeting this

particularly dangerous phase of

the redworm parasite.

When treating proactively,

especially where testing is

sporadic or not done at all, it is

always worth considering ascarid

as a possible cause of disease.

How to check for

resistance

It is largely accepted that every

equestrian property where horses

have been grazed will have some

level of wormer resistance. There

are useful generalisations we can

make to inform treatment choices

based on population sampling.

resistance status of wormers in

to support treatment choices.

Following a positive worm egg

count and subsequent treatment,

a second worm egg count

is taken 10-14 days later. Or in

the case of a positive EquiSal

test and treatment, a followup

test can be done after 12

weeks. This will provide the best

guidance to resistance on your

All youngsters should have a

a tapeworm test every 6 months

and a proactive treatment for

the possibility of encysted small

redworm in the winter with an

appropriate treatment. Not doing

so risks their development and

could impact their future health.

The Equine

PLACENTA

By Kelly Harrison-Tait, MRCVS, Advanced Practitioner

in Equine Stud Medicine, Director of Stud and

Reproduction at B & W Equine Vets

The equine placenta is a

highly villous structure which

supports the growing fetus

through pregnancy. The diffusion of

nutrients to the fetus is poor which

correlates to the low live birth rate

of equine twins as two developing

individuals can rarely be sustained.

The placenta is expelled by

myometrial contractions during

the third stage of labour which

is also when uterine involution

begins. The placenta is passed

within 3 hours after foaling, after

this timeframe it is considered

to be ‘retained’ and intervention

is required. On expulsion, the

placenta should be removed from

the foaling area and examined

to confirm that it is complete and

there are no irregularities. Tying the

placenta with some string or bailing

twine so that it hangs above the

hocks prevents damage from being

stood on until it has been passed.

This makes inspection easier to

interpret as tears or holes present

are known to be true and not from

damage by the mare. If there are

any uncertainties when checking

the placenta then it is important to

use a sealable bag or bucket to

preserve it until a veterinarian can

perform a full examination. Ideally

it should be stored in a cool place

until examination within the first 24

hours so it is as fresh as possible.

The placenta consists of two

sections; the highly villous

allantochorion which interdigates

with the endometrium and the

white translucent, vascular amnion

in which the developing fetus is

encased in utero. For examination,

it should be laid out on a flat

surface to form an ‘F’ shape

comprising of the redder, wider

pregnant and paler, thinner nonpregnant

uterine horns and the

uterine body of the allantochorion.

It is usually presented inside

out with the smooth, non-villous

allantois outermost. It is important

to invert the placenta and also

examine its villous side. It should

appear red and velvety and have

some natural variations relating

to sites such as the umbilical cord

attachment and the cervical star

(the area that apposes the cervical

pole through gestation and is,

therefore, avillous). Loss

of villi in other areas can

be due to a possible

twinning or a functional

compromise.

Allantoic vesicles and

yolk sac remnants can

also be present within

the expelled placenta

and are seen as a normal

biological variation, the

vesicles are the residues

of endometrial cups. The

amnion also experiences

variation and hyperplastic

plaques are often seen,

mostly concentrated

around the umbilical

attachment, thought to

be a result of fetal hair

embedding and other

detritus. A hippomane

is expelled alongside

case this placenta

the fetal membranes and is a

combinationof urine crystals and

allantoic fluid that accumulates

through gestation. The umbilical

cord is attached to the placenta

and contains blood vessels, the

urachus and the vitelline stalk of

the yolk sac. The total weight of the

placenta is approximately 11% of the

weight of the foal at birth.

Placental Problems

Any disruption to the

placenta is a risk to the

developing foal and/or the

mare.

Placentitis is one of the most

commonly observed placental

pathologies during gestation.

Visible signs can be present

and vulval discharge, premature

lactation or systemic illness

can indicate that there is an

irregularity with the placenta and/

or the pregnancy. Ultrasound

examination is advised to visualise

the fetal membranes and fetal

viability and to determine the

extent of the clinical picture.

The caudal cervix can be

delicately swabbed to ascertain

an infectious causative agent

to aid decisions on appropriate

treatment. The most common

form of placentitis in this country

is ascending placentitis which

starts via a compromise at the

cervix allowing infectious agents

to enter the uterus. The area at

the cervical star is visibly affected

on examination of the passed

placenta. The area is thickened, F

British Breeder | 65

Feature | Feeding

often reddened with a purulent

exudate. It can be a contained,

small area or relatively extensive.

Organisms commonly responsible

include bacteria species

Streptococcus zooepidemicus,

Escherelia coli, Klebsiella

pneumoniae, Pseudomonas

aeuroginosa and Leptospirosis

alongside fungal species

Aspergillus and Candida. Fungal

placentitis often results in such a

thickened placenta that rupture

at parturition can be restricted. It

is possible for the placenta to

separate from the uterus

due to chronic infection

and thickening and

subsequent abortion

can occur.

Right: signs

of placental

pathology in the

horse can include

premature udder

development.

Below: when

examining the

placenta it should

be laid out in an

F-shape. This

makes it easier

to check that it is

complete.

Premature separation

of the placenta

often presents as

the colloquially

known ‘red-bag’. The

delivery of oxygen to

the fetus is disrupted

as the chorion separates

from the endometrium and

subsequently creates a highrisk

situation. It most commonly

occurs during parturition and

the red velvet chorion surface

is visible as the first protrusion

from the vulva, rather than the

normal white amnion. In such

events the membranes should be

ruptured without hesitation and

a pair of blunt scissors should

be accessible as incision may

be necessary. The foals should

be delivered immediately due

to impairment by the oxygen

reduction. The cause of a ‘red

bag’ is often not established, but

premature placental separation

can be associated with placentitis

and other infection including

Equine Herpes Virus-1. It is

important to isolate from other

pregnant mares until certain the

virus is not a factor. Placental

separation can also occur

during gestation, with external

similar signs similar to those of

placentitis. It is diagnosed by

using ultrasonography per rectum.

Treatment is often menial but

often aspirin and altrenogest is

commenced in an attempt to

preserve the pregnancy. Due to

the large variability of gestation

length induction of parturition in

horses is ill-advised, as the foal

may be too immature to survive.

A further consideration is the

increased chance of dystocia

and haemorrhage that induction

Below: allantoic

pouches - these

are a normal

variation and

consist of the

decomposing

endometrial cups.

places on the mare.

It can, however, be

considered if the fetus

is considered at high

risk. In these cases

the importance of the

mare and foal need to

be considered as a hospital

caesarean/salvage caesarean

or conservative monitoring needs

to be decided. It is not something

to be undertaken lightly.

A retained placenta, or

even just a small section,

is an equine emergency

as autolysis is very

fast and enables huge

bacterial overgrowth and

inflammation.

The toxins released are absorbed

systemically by the mare and

subsequent endotoxaemia and

laminitis can occur leading to

metritis and even death. Tearing

evident, with the tip of the

nonpregnant horn acting as the

most common predispostion

site as is expelled last, when

examining the passed placenta

can sometimes be ‘mapped’ and

appear entire by using the blood

vessels as a marker. The reliability

of this, however, is not fully reliable

and there may be small sections

missing without appearing to be.

A manual palpation of the uterus

should always be performed

and the uterus lavaged in these

cases. Treatment of mares that

have retained fetal membranes

for 3 hours or more can include

the stimulation of myometrial

contractions by using oxytocin, the

distension of the chorioallantois

with large volumes of weak saline

or very dilute iodine solution or

the catheterisation of the umbilical

vessels and inflation of these

with fluid. Manual removal can

also be used with caution, it is

important that it does not rip or

slough off as this could leave tiny

fragments withing the uterus and

possibly leave an undetected

nidus of infection and damage

to the endometrium. If there are

any doubts or the retention of

the membranes are prolonged

then systemic therapy should

commence. Anti-inflammatory

medication alongside antobiotics

are advised with deep bedding and

ice boots applied if endotoaemia

is considered a risk. The uterus

will need regular flushing until the

efflux represents that of a healthy

post-foaling uterus.

The placenta plays a vital role in

the development of the foal and

is a useful tool for determining

the health of the pregnancy

and indicate any risk factors

that may affect the mare or foal.

The importance of a thorough

examination cannot be over

emphasised and could save the

life of the mare or foal. ●
