It was minutes before the morning bell

rang, and Bo Shaw was eagerly anticipating

his first day at Central Crossing High

School. With his hair neatly groomed and

sporting a cute bow tie around his neck,

he sat by the main entrance of the building,

ready to greet his new friends.

At the same time across town, Luna

Eads was preparing for her first day at

Franklin Heights High School. While not

as ready to be the center of attention as

Bo, she peered through the glass doors of

the main office, wanting to see the people

who might become her new friends.

Although most of the students who

walked by looked as if they already had a

lot on their minds, they couldn’t help but

stop, stare, and then smile as they saw

the furry creatures staring back at them

with unconditional love.

“These are the reactions we had hoped

to see; this is what it is all about,” said

Pat Shaw, the school resource officer at

Central Crossing. “These animals are

here to make our students smile and to

change someone’s day.”

Bo and Luna made their first appearance

at their respective campuses in the

South-Western City School District last

week. They are therapy dogs with local

law enforcement agencies and they are a

part of the district’s ongoing efforts to

support student well-being while creating

positive connections between school officials,

students, and police officers.

“Our students face a variety of challenges,

and we are committed to providing

resources that promote their mental

health and well-being,” said Deputy

Superintendent Dr. Jamie Lusher.

“Expanding our therapy dog program in

partnership with local law enforcement is

an innovative way to connect with students

and provide them with additional

care and support.”

The South-Western City School District recently welcomed two new therapy dogs to

a few of its high school campuses. Luna, (above) a 4-month-old Greater Swiss

Mountain dog, will be assigned to Franklin Heights with her handler, Deputy Rebecca

Eads from the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office. Bo, a 3-year-old Great Pyrenees, will

be assigned to Central Crossing with his handler, Officer Pat Shaw from the Grove

City Division of Police. Shaw and Eads serve as the school resource officers at

Central Crossing and Franklin Heights, respectively. The photo of Bo was provided by

SWCS to purchase

new school buses

By Dedra Cordle

Staff Writer

The South-Western City Schools Board

of Education has purchased new vehicles

for the transportation department.

During the meeting on Jan. 27, the

board unanimously approved a resolution

to acquire 14 school buses from Cardinal

Bus Sales and Service Inc. at a cost of $1.9

million.

Under the terms of the agreement, the

district will receive:

•Eight 78-passenger school buses

•Six 48-passenger school buses

The school buses will be equipped with

digital video systems. The cost of the REI

digital video systems is included in the

$1.9 million expenditure.

The capital purchase will come from the

permanent improvement fund.

The resolution to approve the purchase

of more than a dozen school buses does not

mean there is an immediate need to

replace over a dozen school buses in the

fleet. Instead, what the resolution signifies

is the continuation of an annual replacement

cycle to maintain the health of the

vehicles, said district officials.

Bo has been a certified therapy dog since the age of

1. Shaw believes he was born to serve in this role.

“What makes Bo a great therapy dog is that he is

very patient, he does not lick, and his movements are

extremely slow,” he said of the 120-pound dog. “He is

very calm and he has been that way since he was a

puppy, which I thought was odd.”

Shaw said he initially believed there was something

wrong with Bo, perhaps an undiagnosed medical condition

that made him appear lethargic. He soon discovered

that was just his natural state of being.

“That has just been his temperament since day

one,” said Shaw.

Serving as a therapy dog at Central Crossing and

becoming the first official therapy K9 with the Grove

City Division of Police, Bo was known as the star of the

aptly named “Books with Bo” literacy program at the

Grove City Library. Shaw said even though Bo has a

new job, he will still make appearances at the local

library system.

“I don’t see us giving that up anytime soon,” he said,

noting their next scheduled event on Feb. 20 at 4:30

p.m.

Although Bo has only been working at the high

school since Jan. 23, he has been deployed several

times to help students in emotional distress. Shaw said

watching Bo work his magic by simply being in the

room is awe-inspiring.

“It’s very difficult to be in a learning environment

and it’s very difficult to be in a learning mindset when

you’re distraught or you’ve had a bad day, sometimes

even before you get to school,” said Shaw. “And so my

goal with Bo is to give these kids the opportunity to

feel better and have a different day so that the learning

environment is increased and they leave with a

smile on their face because they deserve it.”

Luna is a 4-month-old Greater Swiss Mountain dog

who will be stationed at Franklin Heights. She will

work alongside her handler, Deputy Rebecca Eads,

with the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office.

Luna is the newest therapy K9 in the county program.

She is still in training. Eads said this “sassy”

girl who is still growing into her body is full of potential.

“I think she is going to be a great therapy dog

because she is so stinking smart, she is just on it,” said

Eads, who is also the school resource officer at

Franklin Heights. “She’s only been doing this for a

week-and-a-half and she’s already following commands

we’ve only been practicing for a few days.

“She also has a very loving demeanor and she just

loves these kids. She wags her tail when she comes

into the building in the morning, and we have been

able to progress her very quickly because she is tolerant

of everything.”

Like Bo, Luna is already making a positive impact

on the students and staff at the westside school. She

has been deployed to help students with panic attacks

and to offer comfort for students with physical, emotional,

or mental disabilities.

Principal Tim Donahue said he is excited that a

therapy dog has been assigned to Franklin Heights.

“I think this is another wonderful resource in our

tool box,” he said. “Some kids need different things to

get through with them and sometimes it’s not always a

person who can reach them.”

He said he is equally excited that the therapy dog

program could be a boon for the school resource officer

program.

“I am a big fan of school resource officers and I think

having a therapy dog with them will open up even

more avenues for kids to connect with Deputy Eads.

We want them to

know that they are

in this school to

help them. That is

what they do and

that is what we do.”

Remembering

Mattis

The district’s

board of education

revised its therapy

animal policies last

year, paving the

way for Bo and

Luna to serve at

the schools. The

policy change was

sparked by

Christina Shore, an

employee at

Westland.

As a counselor

at the high school,

she observed the

the community. At

that time, Sgt.

County Sheriff’s

Office was serving as a relief resource officer with her

partner, Mattis K9.

Mattis was an English Labrador retriever who

became the agency’s first law enforcement therapy dog

in 2017. Known for his intelligence, calm demeanor,

and affection for humans, he comforted victims of

crime and inspired other law enforcement departments

to establish their own therapy dog programs.

He even inspired Shore to request the change in policy

so more schools in the district could benefit from

therapy dogs and their handlers. The board also recognized

the benefits of the law enforcement tandem, voting

unanimously to change its policies in order to

advance the program.

Before he could start a new school year at Westland,

Mattis died on June 28, 2024 due to liver failure. He

was 7 years old.

In recognition of this pioneering canine, Shaw

designed emblems for the collars of Bo and Luna to

commemorate the life and service of Mattis.

“He was the first law enforcement therapy dog in

the state of Ohio and it’s important that we remember

how we all got here,” said Shaw. “We have to carry on

his legacy and we get to carry on his legacy here at

South-Western City Schools.”

Sgt. Metz is currently overseeing the agency’s

school resource officer program. She said she is proud

that the new generation of therapy dogs will strive to

“be like Mattis” while shaping the lives of students and

staff alike.

“I’m proud, I’m humbled, and it makes me want to

cry,” she said.

District spokesperson Evan Debo said that

Westland is expected to have a new therapy dog within

the next year or two. Currently, there are no plans to

station a full-time therapy dog at Grove City High

School; however, Bo and Officer Shaw can be deployed

there or at any Grove City school if the need arises.

In Education

More funding provided for Columbus Promise

Leaders from the city of Columbus, Columbus State

Community College (CSCC), Columbus City Schools

(CCS), I Know I Can (IKIC), and the Columbus

Partnership came together on Feb. 3 with private partners

to announce a campaign to fund the next phase of

the Columbus Promise.

The Columbus Promise is a groundbreaking program

that allows Columbus City Schools graduates to

go to college for free at Columbus State Community

College, and it has dramatically impacted college

access and success. Promise has been an invaluable

resource in helping students at CCS overcome the

challenges they face in pursuing higher education.

Promise Scholars reflect the diverse backgrounds of

the community: Nearly 80 percent are Pell-eligible,

representing students from low-income families; more

than 60 percent identify as Black or Latino; and over

half are part-time students and/or the first in their

families to attend college.

The first phase of the program, announced in fall

2021, lasted three years. It enrolled cohorts of graduating

Columbus City Schools students into Columbus

State Community College in the fall of 2022, 2023, and

2024 – more than doubling the number of CCS graduates

enrolling in CSCC from an average of 313 students

a year in 2021, before Promise began, to 858 students

in the year 2024.

The program covers tuition and fees, offers a $500

per semester stipend, and provides academic and

career support services. It was a public-private partnership,

with $5 million committed by the city of

Columbus and $5.6 million raised from over 25 private

and philanthropic partners.

Phase two is also a public-private partnership, with

three-fifths of the $25 million goal already pledged.

Leaders from Columbus committed $10 million, a first

installment of which they expect to legislate later this

year. Promise leaders celebrate pledges from multiple

lead donors to the campaign totaling $5.5 million.

Nearly half of the money raised from this campaign

will fund tuition, fees, and stipends for students, and

the remaining portion will go toward programming for

HeatShare grants available

The Salvation Army, in partnership with Columbia

Gas of Ohio, wants to remind community members

about a vital initiative that provides critical assistance

to Ohioans struggling to keep their homes warm during

the winter months.

Eligible customers of Columbia Gas of Ohio can

apply for HeatShare grants through The Salvation

Army’s online portal at SAHelp.me or by contacting

their local Salvation Army office. Caseworkers will

assist applicants in completing the required forms and

documentation.

Since the late 1990s, Columbia Gas of Ohio and The

Salvation Army have worked together to meet essential

human needs. The HeatShare program reflects

this shared dedication, ensuring vulnerable populations

have access to warmth and safety when they

need it most.

Produce Market at St. Stephen’s

Alianza614 has partnered with the Mid-Ohio Food

Collective to distribute more than 800 pounds of fresh

around the westside

CCS students and Promise scholars.

This next phase of the program will cover the

remaining costs for the initial three cohorts and fully

fund an additional three cohorts into the fall of 2025,

2026, and 2027, which is expected to include another

2,250 students.

Throughout the three-year pilot, the initiative has

had profound impacts on college-going rates in

Columbus, and each new cohort matched or exceeded

performance across key indicators compared to prior

cohorts:

•About one-third of the CCS graduating class now

become Promise Scholars, contributing to the district

reaching a 50 percent college-going rate in 2023, up

from 32 percent in 2020. That rate has held steady in

2024.

•In the fall of 2024, the program set a new enrollment

record with 790 CCS students becoming Promise

Scholars and 14 CCS high schools have more than doubled

the number of graduates enrolling at Columbus

State Community College after graduation.

“We’re bringing good jobs to central Ohio, but

unless kids raised in Columbus neighborhoods can get

the education to fill them, then our region’s growth will

leave long-time residents and families behind. The

Columbus Promise is how everyone gets a piece of our

prosperity,” said Columbus City Council president

Shannon Hardin.

“The Columbus Promise continues to be a transformative

opportunity for our students, breaking down

barriers to higher education and opening doors to

brighter futures. As we launch Phase two of this

groundbreaking program, I am proud to see our community

unite, investing in our scholars’ success,” said

Dr. Angela Chapman, Columbus City Schools superintendent

and CEO. “The impressive progress we’ve

achieved, for example, by doubling college enrollment

rates, demonstrates the power of this partnership to

support students academically and prepare them for

tomorrow’s workforce.”

“The district targets a purchase of 10 to 15 school buses each

year to maintain a strong fleet,” said board member Camille

Peterson.

According to the most recent numbers released by the transportation

department, the district currently has 210 school buses

in its fleet. More than half of those buses have model years

between 2014 and 2024.

District spokesperson Evan Debo said all of the buses in the

fleet have passed inspection by the state highway patrol.

The new buses are slated to arrive during the summer.

The board of education also approved the purchase of two additional

buses to replace the ones that were totaled in accidents in

2024. The district will receive one 78-passenger school bus and

one 48-passenger school bus at a cost of $267,063.

The capital purchase will be made with insurance proceeds and

from permanent improvement funds.

In other news, the board approved a resolution to replace the

boilers at Jackson Middle School. The boilers will be replaced by

General Temperature Control at a cost of $111,370.

Peterson said the heating unit is working in the building.

Health information possibly compromised in city cyberattack

As part of the city of Columbus’ ongoing

investigation into the July cyberattack on

the city, a limited amount of protected

health information (PHI) for less than

1,000 individuals has been identified in a

Division of Fire database as involved in the

cyberattack.

This database contained dispatch and

other records of the Division of Fire. A

small number of these records include brief

notes about emergency medical services

(EMS) services that were provided at the

location of a Division of Fire call. The information

in these notes was not the same for

everyone. The data may include a combination

of individuals’ first and last name,

address, date of birth, date of service,

and/or brief notes on the EMS service provided.

A very small number of Social

Security numbers were also contained in

the PHI.

It was discovered on Dec. 12, 2024 that

the impacted database contained this data

that could be considered PHI. The database

was then reviewed and analyzed to ascertain

the individuals whose PHI was present

at the time of the attack. There is no

evidence that the Division of Fire’s encrypted

electronic medical record system that

separately holds its treatment records was

compromised, nor is there evidence that

financial account information was

involved. The division and city are

unaware of any actual or attempted misuse

of personal information or PHI for identity

theft or fraud.

As a result of this review, the Division of

Fire will be mailing letters to the individuals

whose PHI was contained in the

impacted database. These individuals

already qualify for two years of free

Experian credit and dark web monitoring

services, which includes $1 million of protection

against fraud and identity theft;

they will have 90 days from when the letter

is sent to enroll.

This service also remains available

through March 31 to residents and individuals

who may have shared their personal

information with the city of Columbus.

To sign up, go to columbus.gov/cyber.

Service begins upon enrollment.

One Door initiative streamlines

access to health and human services

On Jan. 21, the Franklin County

Commissioners launched the opening of

One Door, an initiative designed to streamline

access to essential Health and Human

Service resources. The program was

unveiled with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at

the Michael J. Dorrian Building, where the

One Door office is now open to serve residents

on the first floor of the county government

complex.

The One Door initiative marks a pivotal

advancement in serving Franklin County’s

1.4 million residents. By consolidating

services from five key agencies, the Office

on Aging, Child Support Enforcement

Agency, Job and Family Services, Justice

Policy and Programs and Veterans

Services, into a single, integrated system,

the office is purposely tailored to meet the

diverse needs of the community with efficiency

and care.

“One Door isn’t an ordinary transactional

resource, it’s a philosophy rooted in equity

and designed to empower every resident,”

said commission president Erica

Crawley. “This initiative is a game changer,

meeting residents where they are with

dignity, compassion, and opportunities to

thrive.”

Residents often face barriers when navigating

multiple agencies to access crucial

services, resulting in time-consuming and

frustrating experiences. One Door simplifies

this process by offering a holistic

Resource Center

The Hilltop United Methodist Men will

host a CPR Resource Center every Friday

at 99 S. Highland Ave. in Columbus. This

center will provide a resource link to help

those in need with the cost of gas, electric,

and rent. There will also be a medical clinic,

job referral information, and free legal

assistance.

Adrian McKinney, 29, of Columbus, was

sentenced in U.S. District Court to 84

months in prison for illegally possessing a

firearm and narcotics near a local school.

According to court documents, in March

2024, law enforcement agents executed a

search warrant at McKinney’s apartment

in the Wedgewood Village Apartment

Complex, which is within 1,000 feet of

Wedgewood Middle School.

The westside apartment complex has

700 units and is near multiple schools. This

case was investigated by the Wedgewood

Enforcement Team, which was developed

by the Columbus Division of Police beginning

in October 2023 and is dedicated to

addressing the consistently high crime

around the westside

method to prioritize needs under one roof.

Through a unified system and a shared

electronic needs assessment tool, this

approach ensures seamless coordination

between agencies, enabling faster and

more comprehensive support for residents

and their entire household.

“While many in our community continue

to face challenges, One Door is about

breaking down barriers and building a system

that works for everyone,” said commissioner

John O’Grady. “This initiative is a

direct investment in helping families and

creating pathways to success.”

In addition to simplifying access, One

Door promotes economic mobility,

improves communication across agencies,

and is grounded in measurable outcomes.

With coordinated public policies and unified

messaging, the initiative embodies the

commissioners’ commitment to innovation

and community welfare.

“This initiative reflects Franklin

County’s dedication to serving residents in

transformational ways,” said commissioner

Kevin Boyce. “The One Door approach creates

a healthier, more resilient community

by ensuring critical services are accessible,

efficient, and impactful.”

One Door services are now open to the

public, Monday through Friday, from 9

a.m. to 3 p.m., on the first floor of the

Michael J. Dorrian Building, located at 369

S. High St., Columbus.

level at the apartment complex.

While searching McKinney’s apartment,

officers located a loaded multi-caliber

firearm, fentanyl and cocaine. As a previously

convicted felon, McKinney is prohibited

from possessing firearms or ammunition.

McKinney has been convicted of various

state narcotics crimes in the past and

was under court supervision when he committed

these latest offenses.

McKinney pleaded guilty in August

Music part of Culture Pass Program

Columbus Metropolitan Library (CML) has partnered

with Chamber Music Columbus to make a select

number of tickets available for library customers to

check out for free.

Two Chamber Music Columbus Culture Passes are

now available at each of CML’s 23 locations. Each pass

admits two individuals to select performances.

CML offers its cardholders free admission to select

central Ohio cultural institutions. The Culture Pass

program enables CML customers to borrow passes just

as they would a book: using their library card. This

onetime pass, which must be checked out in person,

grants customers limited free access to institutions

that would otherwise charge admission fees.

CML piloted the program in 2018, offering Culture

Passes to Franklin Park Conservatory and the Wexner

“With the help of our community partners, we’re

The Culture Pass program offers each participating

institution the opportunity to select which specific

CML locations will offer their passes based on the

neighborhoods and communities associated with their

outreach, diversity and inclusion goals. Therefore,

Culture Passes are only available for in-person customer

checkout at the specific CML locations. Culture

Passes cannot be reserved like traditional library

items. However, customers can check their availability

at columbuslibrary.org by typing “Culture Pass” into

the catalog search bar.

Each participating organization offers their passes

to CML and its customers for free. CML does not purchase

passes as it does with traditional library materials.

Each organization sets its own rules for how many

individuals are covered under its passes and on which

days the passes will be honored. Partner organizations

also set the number of passes allotted to each designated

CML location.

news and notes

The deadline to license a dog without

incurring extra fees has been extended

through Feb. 28 to accommodate more

owners obtaining licenses, Franklin

County Auditor Michael Stinziano said.

The new deadline will enable Franklin

County dog owners who were busy during

the holidays or otherwise distracted to register

for their legally required dog license.

The price of a license doubles after the Feb.

28 deadline.

“We hope this provides all of our county

residents with more opportunities to be

able to complete the all-important step of

protecting their pal by registering their

dog with the county,” said Stinziano.

Licenses may be purchased online at

doglicense.franklincountyohio.gov, or at

the auditor’s office license counter, 373 S.

High St., 21st floor in downtown

Columbus. The counter is open Monday

through Friday, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Owners can also change addresses,

download forms and update dog information

via the online licensing system.

In addition to being required by state

law, dog licensing ensures that any lost dog

is returned quickly to their owners.

License fees help support the Franklin

County Dog Shelter and Adoption Center.

PAGE 8 - WESTSIDE MESSENGER - February 9, 2025

There was a time when a romantic comedy

starring Will Ferrell and Reese

Witherspoon would have been a major theatrical

release.

The box office prognosticators would

have projected the opening weekend at $65

million and there would be an expectation

that the film would eventually surpass the

$200 million mark based on name recognition

alone. But these days? No one in the

movie industry seems to know the value of

a romantic comedy at the box office, which

is why so many movie studios are unwilling

to release them in the theaters.

A romantic comedy going directly to

home video — or any movie, for that matter

— used to be seen as a horrific event in

Hollywood. Having this designation

attached to your film meant it was so bad

that it had to be relegated to the backwoods

of the industry, never to be seen from,

heard from, or acknowledged ever again.

Thankfully, there has been a shift in this

narrative due to the prevalence and popularity

of streaming services so finding a

home and an audience via non-traditional

methods is not the death knell it once was.

Still, there is something to be said about

having that theatrical experience when it

comes to watching movies that fall within

this genre.

Even if the movie itself left something to

be desired, it was always a special experience

to watch a romantic comedy with an

audience. You would laugh together, groan

together, sigh together, and maybe even

share a sob together.

As I was watching “You’re Cordially

Invited” on Amazon Prime the other day, I

couldn’t help but wish for that collective

experience. While this is not a movie that

will make you cry, it did have some great

laugh-out-loud moments, some irresistibly

cheesy moments, and a few groan-worthy

movies that would have been fun to see and

hear with a big crowd. Alas, this charmingly

bizarre romantic comedy starring Ferrell

and Witherspoon can only be viewed and

experienced on a streaming platform.

While I will not go as far as to tell you to

grab your credit card and give the billionaire

Jeff Bezos even more of your money, I

will say they do have a trial subscription

that can be cancelled any time. So, if you

are looking for a good way to escape via

funny movies, spending a few bucks on this

flick and the other comedies currently on

the service wouldn’t be a complete waste of

your money.

The opening of the film introduces us to

Jim Caldwell (Ferrell) and Margot Buckley

(Witherspoon), two strangers living on

opposite ends of the country. At first

glance, they do not have anything in common

but we quickly discover that they both

share a love for their families — or a select

few members, that is. For Jim, the person

he loves most in the world is his daughter,

Jenni (Geraldine Viswanathan). Ever since

his wife died, making Jenni happy has

become his entire reason to live. So, when

he learns her boyfriend Oliver (Stony

Blyden) has asked for her hand in marriage,

Jim makes it his mission to make

sure Jenni gets everything she wants for

her big day. This includes scrambling to

book a date in the exclusive resort where

he and his late wife got married decades

ago. For Margot, the person she loves most

in the world is her

younger sister, Neve

(Meredith Hagner).

Ever since she realized

their mother

and their siblings

were unnecessarily

critical people, making

“the perfect angel” Neve happy became

her entire reason to succeed in life.

So, when she learns that her boyfriend

Dixon (Jimmy Tatro) has asked for her

hand in marriage, Margot makes it her

mission to make sure Neve gets everything

she wants for her big day. This includes

scrambling to book a date in the exclusive

resort where they spent magical summers

with their beloved grandmother.

A scheduling error puts these two lonely

souls on a collision course with destiny — or

a lengthy hospital stay. When they first

meet and discover the double booked

venue, there is a lot of initial “It’s my

venue!”/”No, I was here first!” back and

forth between Jim and Margot. When cooler

heads prevail, both wedding parties

agree to share the island. This tentative

truce is soon put to the test when weather

events, nosy friends, and warring family

members inevitably get involved in each

other’s business. There’s some amusing

sabotage that takes place, but that’s not

the film’s primary driving force. While Jim

initially bonds with Margot’s family, as the

weekend unfolds, Margot reconnects with

her own estranged family — united by their

common enemy in Jim.

Writer and director Nicholas Stoller

(“Forgetting Sarah Marshall,” “The Five-

Year Engagement”) has created something

quite silly with this film and it mostly

works. Ferrell is at his most Ferrell — playing

a bridezilla dad whose eyes turn black

at certain moments. And Witherspoon

cranks her old Tracy Flick energy up to 11,

first attempting to grin her way through

the weekend before fully gnashing her

teeth while embracing full-blown revenge.

The pairing of these two cinema stars click

in a comedic sense, but they do lack a certain

romantic chemistry that would have

made this movie work a little bit more.

While “You’re Cordially Invited” is not

quite on the level of the two films it evokes

the most — “Wedding Crashers” and “Sweet

Home Alabama” — it’s about as good as a

major studio can deliver. I had an enjoyable

time watching this, laughed more

than a few times.

Grade: B-

A sneak peek at Darby snakes

On Jan. 25, Battelle Darby Creek Metro Park invited the public to meet the nature center’s

resident snakes. Visitors of all ages had the opportunity to pet the snakes, watch

them eat, and even witness a rat snake go for a swim in the living stream. Here,

Naturalist Cecelia Phillips encourages 3-year-old Adeline and her mom, Sheryl to pet

one of the snakes. The Grove City family follow the Columbus and Franklin County

Metro Parks on social media so they know what programs are happening.

Twitchy, the black rat snake, consumes a frozen rat. In the wild, rat snakes typically live

10 to 15 years, but Twitchy has reached the ripe old age of 30 so she moves slow.

Hilltop History & Heritage

Mount Carmel West is located in Franklinton off West Broad Street. The hospital

was the oldest of the Mount Carmel Health System facilities. Founded in 1886 by

the Sisters of the Holy Cross, it was first known as Hawkes Hospital of Mount

Carmel. Dr. WB Hawkes (1812-1883) founded the hospital but died before it was

completed. The hospital first served the needs of infants and children, later adding

inpatient and emergency facilities. In addition, the Mount Carmel School of

Nursing is located on the grounds. The inpatient services were moved to the

Mount Carmel Grove City location in 2019 and most of the hospital facilities have

been demolished. It now serves as an outpatient and emergency facility. If you

have a photo to share, contact Stacy Berndsen-Campbell at
