The Marylee Bendig Team
Family legacy and new
CW Library intertwined
By Theresa Garee
Staff Writer
The plans to build the new Canal
Winchester Library began in 2022, but for
one family it is the extension of a woman’s
life purpose that began long before.
The property at 123 Groveport Road,
where the new Canal Winchester Library
is being built, was originally owned by
German immigrants, Mary and William
Wittmann. The Wittmanns were farmers
who met in an English learning class.
They were farmers who also gathered
scraps from the nearby restaurants and
fed them to their animals, keeping business
truly local.
The Wittmann’s had a daughter, Mary.
Up until early 2023, Mary (Wittmann)
Westinghouse, a retired Columbus City
Schools teacher, visited her childhood
property to monitor the changes taking
place to create the library.
“Teaching was her purpose in life, she
felt she changed students’ lives,” Mary’s
daughter Lori Westinghouse said.
The house Mary grew up in was built in
1853 and the fields were filled with dandelions
and wildflowers. Lori remembers
Mary sharing stories of she and her
friends playing in the fields.
“Her parents taught that working hard
and staying with it meant you were teaching
a blessing and the library is going to
be a blessing to others,” Mary’s husband
Richard Westinghouse said.
The land had two homes on the property
and, when Mary moved out, she and
Richard rented the homes. Richard said
the land was used for a many things over
the years including as an experimental
space for Ohio State University to test
weed killing strategies.
Mary’s family was elated to find that
not only will a library be built on this
memorable piece of historic land, but that
the library decided to retain the original
address, 123 Groveport Road.

“Sometimes things work out for the best
since the library fits with my mom’s passion
for learning and teaching,” said Lori
Westinghouse, adding that the city of
Canal Winchester had once considered
building a post office on the land.
Learning the final plan of a library,
Mary was more than pleased. Mary passed
in March 2023, but family is sure her life’s
passion will continue with the library.
“The library is a legacy of her love for
learning and knowledge…a safe place for
people to come,” Lori said.

Obetz Youth Sports
The city of Obetz is making youth sports
more accessible to the community.
According to Mayor Angela Kirk and
Obetz City Council, youth sports registration
will now be free for Obetz residents
and all students of Hamilton Local Schools.
This includes baseball, softball, and t-ball
in the spring, as well as football and cheerleading
in the fall.
“I am so happy that we are just a couple
months away from spring sports!” said
Kirk. “I am excited for another year of
youth sports in Obetz, and I can’t wait to
see everyone on the field.”
All youth living in Obetz qualify for free
registration. Hamilton Local Schools students,
even if they’re not Obetz residents,
are eligible.
Students from Groveport Madison
Schools who are not residents of Obetz are
not eligible for this offer because the city of
Groveport offers similar youth sports programs.
Non-residents can still register for
Obetz spring sports at these rates: baseball
and softball: $80 and t-ball: $65.
For information and to register, visit
obetz.oh.us.
Obetz City Council
Obetz City Council meets the second
and fourth Mondays of each month at 6
p.m. in the Council Chambers at 4175
Alum Creek Drive, Obetz. Call (614) 491-

Branch at 115 Franklin St. is open Monday
through Thursday from 9 a.m.-8 p.m. and
Friday and Saturday from 9 a.m.-6 p.m. It
opened in 2016 as an “express branch” to
serve a community that did not previously
have close access to library services. It will
remain open during construction of the
new branch.
The new, stand alone Canal Winchester
Library Branch, under construction at 123
Groveport Road, will be more than five
times the size of the current branch, from
roughly 5,400 square feet to approximately
30,000 square feet. CML expects to open
the new Canal Winchester Branch in 2026.
Vote on housing project postponed
www.columbusmessenger.com February 9, 2025 - SOUTH & CANAL WINCHESTER MESSENGER - PAGE 3
By Rick Palsgrove
Managing Editor
On Jan. 21, Canal Winchester City Council postponed
a vote on a rezoning ordinance regarding a proposed
large housing development in Canal Winchester.
The legislation also accepts a preliminary plan and
development text for the parcels.
City officials noted the postponement allows for the
opportunity to improve the development and for the
applicant to hear residents’ concerns.
A message released earlier this year by Canal
Winchester City Council President Will Bennett stated,
“The applicant requesting to rezone a portion of
land on the south end of Canal Winchester called
‘Miller Farms’ has asked Ordinance 24-034 be tabled
to allow more time for discussion and review based on
feedback they have received. As Council President and
the sponsor of this ordinance, I intend to move to have
the ordinance tabled. This would delay the approval or
denial of the ordinance until a future city council meeting.”
Background
The developer of the proposed large housing development
in Canal Winchester recently made revisions
to their rezoning application in response to a public
hearing held Dec. 2.
The ordinance seeks to rezone 95 acres of property
located at the corner of Hayes Road, Lithopolis Road,
and Oregon Road from Planned Residential District
and Exceptional Use to Planned Unit District, Wilcox
Communities, LLC as applicant on behalf of property
owner Dwight Imler Revocable Living Trust and
Kenneth Kole, LLC. The development is named “Miller
Farms.” The original proposal called for 35 acres of
open space.
The land is currently agricultural in an area that
the city’s Community Plan has noted as a rural preserve/settlement.
Original plan
According to the original application, the acreage is
made up of six parcels. Lisle Creek runs through the
area. The development would have four sections consisting
of:
•Section A: About 118 single family homes located
in the western portion of the development.
•Section B: About 221 single family apartment
homes located in the central portion of the development.
•Section C: About 105 town homes located in the
eastern portion of the development.
•Section D: About 4.6 acres of neighborhood commercial
use near Lithopolis and Oregon roads.
Revisions to the plan
On Dec. 12, attorney David Hodge of Underhill &
Hodge LLC, who is representing the applicant, sent an
email to city council outlining revisions to the plan
“We thought it important to distribute this email,
and additional information, to make all aware of some
meaningful revisions committed to by the Miller
Farms Applicant Wilcox Communities — and to add
clarity around several issues raised during the Dec. 2,
public hearing with council,” wrote Hodge.
The revisions listed in the email include:
•Town home uses: A commitment is now made that
the town home product will be fee simple lots.
•Commercial uses: Convenience stores and limited
price variety stores are now prohibited uses.
•School impact: The applicant hired a third party
consultant, Bricker Graydon, to estimate the Canal
Winchester school district’s annual real estate tax revenue
from Miller Farms once fully built out. They estimate
that the development would produce a total of
$1.72 million in annual tax revenue to the district, and
this total does not include any additional school district
revenue from income taxes. Utilizing the estimate
of 96 new students and the incremental cost to educate
them, the Miller Farms development would result in a
“substantial economic benefit to the district.”
•Open Space: Clarity that 35.94 +/- acres are preserved
as open space, which is 37.5 percent of the total
land, and 12.5 percent above the minimum code
requirement.
Council accepted these revisions to update the ordinance.

CLEANING HIDDEN AREAS
Dental plaque is the primary
cause of tooth decay and gum
disease. A toothbrush can help
remove plaque from visible
surfaces but not from between
the teeth and under the gumline.
Unwaxed floss is needed for these
hidden areas...Here's how:
Cut off about 18 inches of floss
and wrap the ends around your
middle fingers, leaving about 2
inches between your hands.
Guide it with your thumbs for the
upper teeth and index fingers for
the lowers. Pass the floss gently
between two teeth, sliding
several times to the gum and back
along the side of one tooth.
Repeat the scraping on the side of
Dr. Kelly
the adjacent tooth and move on
until all teeth are flossed.
A word of caution: Try never to
snap the floss suddenly between
two teeth as the gums may be
sensitive. Use a gentle, sawing
motion. If your gums bleed, you
may be flossing too hard, or the
gums may be in poor health.
Don't be shy. Have your dentist or
hygienist demonstrate the flossing
method to you.
Prepared as a public service
to promote better dental health.

CW Bed Tax Grants
On Jan. 21, Canal Winchester City
Council approved a resolution for the distribution
of the 2025 Transient Occupancy
Tax (Bed Tax) Grant Program funds. The
grant program is open to non-profits or private
organizations located within the city
of Canal Winchester to help fund projects
that will enhance Canal Winchester for
residents and/or visitors to the community.
Grants are funded with the hotel/motel tax
revenue collected by the city of Canal
Winchester.
Canal Winchester has levied a 6 percent
Transient Occupancy Tax (Bed Tax) that is
imposed when lodging is furnished to transient
guests by a hotel, motel, or similar
business. One half (3 percent) of this tax is
contributed to the city’s general fund, and
the remaining half goes into a Bed Tax
Fund. 1.5 percent of the Bed Tax Fund
contribution is allocated to Destination:
Canal Winchester, the designated visitors
and convention bureau for Canal
Winchester. The remaining half is used at
council’s discretion, which includes the Bed
Tax Grant Program. All awards must be
used within the 2025 calendar year.

Calm and communal
By Sarah Huffman
Staff Writer
Elizabeth Wood, a Canal Winchesterbased
yoga teacher, has co-authored an
international best selling wellness book
that aims to inspire others to begin their
own transformations towards well-being.
Wood’s wellness journey began one
morning when she awoke unable to feel the
left side of her body. She spent an extensive
amount of time and finances in medical
offices that ultimately gave her no
diagnosis or conclusive understanding on
what had gone wrong. A multitude of
autoimmune issues and infections with no
known cause invaded her sense of wellness
and demanded change.
“My wake up call was my body telling
me I couldn’t continue things as I had,”
Wood said.
Wood thought she practiced healthy
habits, but the situation invited her to reevaluate.
“I wasn’t being as loving to myself as I
could be,” she said, prompting her to begin
an intuitive process of mindfulness, movement,
and nutrition to restore her health.
She began with simple steps such as sitting
down to eat a full meal. As a new
mother, practices like this seemed to fade
as she fell victim to the notion of neglecting
one’s own well-being to enjoy all the child’s
younger years have to offer. She made a
connection with her lack of nurturing her
own health with the ironic inability to be
active in her child's life to the capacity she
desired.
Yoga had been a practice familiar
to Wood. It was woven throughout
her life and once returned to her as a
tool in restoring her health in early
motherhood. It soon became a
necessity as she watched its effect
play a vital role in her healing.
“You lose some freedom when you don’t
have wellness,” she said.
Diving into holistic wellness can be
stressful, but as her habits built, she
noticed that this way of living felt more
natural to her than before. Aiming for
whole foods, gentle movement, and mindfulness
seemed to cure her more than any
drug. The “incurable” diagnosis seemed to
become background noise. She found medical
professionals who helped lead her
through proper diet and supplementation
changes and she saw improvement. She
was present, nourished, and energized.
Yoga had been a practice familiar to
Wood. It was woven throughout her life
and once returned to her as a tool in restoring
her health in early motherhood. It soon
became a necessity as she watched its
effect play a vital role in her healing.
“It felt very empowering that there were
things I could do to feel better,” she said.
The simplicity of it felt surprising and
she learned a way of discipline that was not
rigid, but soft and kind to her body.
By taking an inventory of her own
needs, she had befriended herself along
the way.

ELIZABETH WOOD
“I feel younger and more energized now
than I did in my 20’s,” said Wood. “You do
not have to feel bad when you age.”
Her personal practices expanded as an
opportunity to reach her community. The
heartbeat of Wood’s work is service. Even
in her former journalism career, she had
the desire to use storytelling as a means to
be a part of bringing people to healing or
restoration.
That effort continues in a different form
as Wood began teaching in a juvenile
detention center.
She focuses on encouraging the youth to
listen to their bodies and emphasizes how
much there is to learn about your own
needs in stillness. She also teaches yoga
classes at Circleville Middle School, leads
local yoga in the park, guides meditative
sound baths, and hosts wellness retreats -
all gatherings that represent a way that
wellness can be communal.
A teacher of Woods, Vickie Gould, initiated
the collection of transformative testimonies
all building what is now known and
published as, “The Call Within.” As sickness
can be isolating, this collection of 52
stories hopes to help readers feel less alone
in their journey to wellness. The publication
is not a chronological read, but can be
explored to find the particular chapters
that resonate with the reader. The book’s
profits are going to the Brighter Healing
Foundation to provide holistic wellness
resources for people in need. “The Call
Within” can be found on Amazon, Audible,
Barnes & Noble, AppleBooks, and
IndieBound.
Wood’s experience is a testimony to the
power of simplicity when it comes to giving
your body space to heal.
The practice of mindfulness, paying
attention, often experienced through yoga
is an option for those who desire to see
change in their health.
Wood is a nominee for the 2025 Pillar of
the Community Award through the Canal
Winchester Chamber of Commerce.

A Successful Start in 2025
As we embark on this new year, I want to reflect on 2024
and share my gratitude for the incredible privilege of
serving you in the Ohio Senate. We achieved remarkable
milestones together, and I am optimistic about
what lies ahead. I was honored to take the oath of office
in January as we officially began the 136th General Assembly.
From day one, my commitment has been to
work with my constituents and the great people of
Ohio. I focus on crafting policies that uplift families,
strengthen communities, and create opportunities for
all Ohioans to thrive. Due to redistricting, my district will
now include parts of Franklin, Pickaway, and Madison
Counties. I am excited about this change and the opportunity
to expand my advocacy at the Statehouse to
my new constituents. One of the highlights of 2024 was
attending the Governor’s bill signings on several important
pieces of legislation I championed. It was indeed a
proud moment to see our collective efforts result in
meaningful changes that will positively impact lives
across the state:
● SB 95 – Authorizing the Use of Tele-Pharmacy
Services: This legislation expands access to
pharmaceutical care in underserved areas,
everaging technology to ensure that all Ohioans
have the resources to manage their health effectively.
● HB 8 – The “Parents Bill of Rights: ”A landmark
measure empowering parents with greater
involvement in their children’s education and
ensuring transparency in the decisions that
affect our future generations.
● HB 173 – Designating “Ohio Black Media Week:”
This bill celebrates the vital contributions
of Black media outlets in our state, recognizing
heir role in amplifying voices, sharing stories,
and fostering informed communities. I am pleased
to announce my committee assignments for the
136th General Assembly. These roles position me
These roles position me to address key issues
and advocate for policies that matter most to our
communities:
1. Housing (Chair): Leading efforts to address
housing affordability and accessibility across Ohio.
2. Judiciary (Vice Chair): Supporting a fair and
efficient judicial system.
3. Workforce Development (Vice Chair): Promoting
initiatives to build a skilled and competitive
workforce.
4. Small Business and Economic Opportunity:
Championing small businesses as drivers of
economic growth.
5. Agriculture and Natural Resources: Preserving
Ohio’s agricultural heritage and natural resources.
6. Rules and Reference: Ensuring legislative
priorities eflect the needs of our constituents.

Most popular dog names
in Franklin County
The Franklin County Auditor’s office
released the list of the county’s most popular
dog names in 2024 — and also some of
the more rare ones.
It appears “Bella” once again reigns
queen, with 1,622 dogs registered in
Franklin County bearing that name. Here
are the top five names as of December
2024:
•Bella (1,622)
•Lucy (1,147)
•Max (1,025)
•Daisy (971)
•Charlie (924)
As is often the case, some of this year’s
more interesting names are actually at the
bottom of the list. Coming in with a total
count of one dog to the name are “Stamp
Von Smush Smucher The First,” “Socks the
Wonder Dog,” “Phoenix Rising from The
Ashes,” “Sir Earl Of Clevenger” and “Puck
Stanley Cup Morgan.”
Brutus, with 409 dogs, remains popular
at number 36, while Buckeye with 202
dogs is the 108th most popular. Besides
names from movies, foods, drinks, athletes
and celebrities, Anime proved to be an
inspiration for some dog names this year.
The Dragon Ball franchise (movies and
comic books) inspired owners to name their
dogs Goku (8), Piccolo (5), Trunks (2) and
Gohan (2). One Piece characters might also
have been an inspiration for names: Luffy
(4), Zoro (4) and Nami (4). Smurfs villain
Gargamayle (2) also made the list.
The top five dog breeds across the county
remain similar to last year. Here are the
top five breeds of currently licensed dogs in
Franklin County:
•Mixed Breed (10,089)
•Golden Retriever (2,632)
•Labrador Retriever (2,621)
•Pit Bull (2,492)
•German Shepherd (2,359)

Winter Crisis Program
With icy temperatures and severe winter
weather hitting much of Ohio, the state
of Ohio is urging residents to take advantage
of a program designed to keep homes
warm and families safe.
The Ohio Department of Development’s
Home Energy Assistance Winter Crisis
Program provides income-eligible Ohioans
one-time assistance managing their home
energy bill. The program runs through
March 31.
“With some of the coldest weather of the
season expected to come our way, it’s more
important than ever to ensure every
Ohioan stays safe and warm,” said Lydia
Mihalik, director of the Department of
Development. “The Winter Crisis Program
is here to provide that critical support in
these bitter and challenging conditions.”
The Winter Crisis Program assists
Ohioans facing service disconnection, those
who have already been disconnected, individuals
needing to establish new service,
those required to pay for a service transfer,
and those with a Percentage of Income
Payment Plan (PIPP) default or who need
to make their first PIPP payment. It also
supports households with 25 percent or
less of bulk fuel in their tank to maintain
service. Qualifying households must have a
gross annual income at or below 175 percent
of the federal poverty level. For a family
of four, that is $54,600. Last year, the
Winter Crisis Program assisted nearly
77,000 households in Ohio, providing a
total of $23.5 million in benefits.
Households serviced by a Public
Utilities Commission of Ohio (PUCO)-regulated
utility must sign up for PIPP or
another payment plan if there is still an
outstanding balance on the utility bill after
receiving assistance.
Ohioans can start their application
online but must schedule an appointment
with their local energy assistance provider
to complete the application. Depending on
the agency, the appointment may be in
person, on the phone, or remotely. The
application and list of providers can be
found online at energyhelp.ohio.gov.
Clients need to bring copies of the following
documents to their appointment:
•Copies of their most-recent energy
bills, if available
•A list of all household members and
proof of income for the last 30 days or 12
months for each member
•Proof of U.S. citizenship or legal residency
for all household members
•Proof of disability, if applicable
For more information about the Winter
Crisis Program, visit energyhelp.ohio.gov.

This rom-com is more comedy than romance
There was a time when a romantic comedy
starring Will Ferrell and Reese
Witherspoon would have been a major theatrical
release.
The box office prognosticators would
have projected the opening weekend at $65
million and there would be an expectation
that the film would eventually surpass the
$200 million mark based on name recognition
alone. But these days? No one in the
movie industry seems to know the value of
a romantic comedy at the box office, which
is why so many movie studios are unwilling
to release them in the theaters.
A romantic comedy going directly to
home video — or any movie, for that matter
— used to be seen as a horrific event in
Hollywood. Having this designation
attached to your film meant it was so bad
that it had to be relegated to the backwoods
of the industry, never to be seen from,
heard from, or acknowledged ever again.
Thankfully, there has been a shift in this
narrative due to the prevalence and popularity
of streaming services so finding a
home and an audience via non-traditional
methods is not the death knell it once was.
Still, there is something to be said about
having that theatrical experience when it
comes to watching movies that fall within
this genre.
Even if the movie itself left something to
be desired, it was always a special experience
to watch a romantic comedy with an
audience. You would laugh together, groan
together, sigh together, and maybe even
share a sob together.
As I was watching “You’re Cordially
Invited” on Amazon Prime the other day, I
couldn’t help but wish for that collective
experience. While this is not a movie that
will make you cry, it did have some great
laugh-out-loud moments, some irresistibly
cheesy moments, and a few groan-worthy
movies that would have been fun to see and
hear with a big crowd. Alas, this charmingly
bizarre romantic comedy starring Ferrell
and Witherspoon can only be viewed and
experienced on a streaming platform.
While I will not go as far as to tell you to
grab your credit card and give the billionaire
Jeff Bezos even more of your money, I
will say they do have a trial subscription
that can be cancelled any time. So, if you
are looking for a good way to escape via

Jim Caldwell (Ferrell)
and Margot Buckley
Dedra
Cordle
(Witherspoon), two
strangers living on opposite ends of the
country. At first glance, they do not have
anything in common but we quickly discover
that they both share a love for their families
— or a select few members, that is. For
Jim, the person he loves most in the world
is his daughter, Jenni (Geraldine Viswanathan).
Ever since his wife died, making
Jenni happy has become his entire reason
to live. So, when he learns her boyfriend
Oliver (Stony Blyden) has asked for her
hand in marriage, Jim makes it his mission
to make sure Jenni gets everything she
wants for her big day. This includes scrambling
to book a date in the exclusive resort
where he and his late wife got married
decades ago. For Margot, the person she
loves most in the world is her younger sister,
Neve (Meredith Hagner). Ever since
she realized their mother and their siblings
were unnecessarily critical people, making
“the perfect angel” Neve happy became her
entire reason to succeed in life.
So, when she learns that her boyfriend
Dixon (Jimmy Tatro) has asked for her
hand in marriage, Margot makes it her
mission to make sure Neve gets everything
she wants for her big day. This includes
scrambling to book a date in the exclusive
resort where they spent magical summers
with their beloved grandmother.
A scheduling error puts these two lonely
souls on a collision course with destiny — or
a lengthy hospital stay. When they first
meet and discover the double booked
venue, there is a lot of initial “It’s my
venue!”/”No, I was here first!” back and
forth between Jim and Margot. When cooler
heads prevail, both wedding parties
round sports training and competition in a
variety of Olympic type sports for intellectually
disabled individuals. For information

agree to share the island. This tentative
truce is soon put to the test when weather
events, nosy friends, and warring family
members inevitably get involved in each
other’s business. There’s some amusing
sabotage that takes place, but that’s not
the film’s primary driving force. While Jim
initially bonds with Margot’s family, as the
weekend unfolds, Margot reconnects with
her own estranged family — united by their
common enemy in Jim.
Writer and director Nicholas Stoller
(“Forgetting Sarah Marshall,” “The Five-
Year Engagement”) has created something
quite silly with this film and it mostly
works. Ferrell is at his most Ferrell — playing
a bridezilla dad whose eyes turn black
at certain moments. And Witherspoon
cranks her old Tracy Flick energy up to 11,
first attempting to grin her way through
the weekend before fully gnashing her
teeth while embracing full-blown revenge.
The pairing of these two cinema stars click
in a comedic sense, but they do lack a certain
romantic chemistry that would have
made this movie work a little bit more.
While “You’re Cordially Invited” is not
quite on the level of the two films it evokes
the most — “Wedding Crashers” and “Sweet
Home Alabama” — it’s about as good as a
major studio can deliver. I had an enjoyable
time watching this, laughed more than
a few times.

Ten years of song, dance, and community
By Rick Palsgrove
Managing Editor
The Groveport Madison Area
Community Choir will celebrate a decade of
song at its upcoming 10th anniversary
show.
The show, entitled “Back to the Future:
A Musical Variety Show,” will be held on
March 1 at 1 p.m. and 7 p.m. at Groveport
Madison High School 4475 S. Hamilton
Road, Groveport.
The group will be pulling out all the
stops for this show with fantastic costumes,
props, and more.
“We picked this theme because we will
revisit some music from past shows, but
also new music as well as we look
to the future,” said Groveport Madison
Area Community Choir Director Terri
Christensen.
She said there will be large displays in
the lobby from past shows created by choir
members.
During the show there will be a special
“memories” video including pictures
of the past 10 years.
“Our GMACC kids, many of whom started
when they were in kindergarten are now
involved in more numbers as they continue
to mature and find their passion for music
and dance,” said Christensen. “Our tap
dancers have become quite popular and
this year we are adding a few men to that
group. You don’t want to miss that!”
Over the past 10 years the Groveport
Madison Area Community Choir has
evolved and grown.
“The GMACC has seen so much growth,
and not just in numbers, these past 10
years,” said Christensen. “The family that
has been formed through the common
love of music and helping the community is
just amazing. Like the song says, ‘We Are
Family’ and we care about each other and
our community. When we started this
adventure with the large shows, we had 32
members and four volunteers. We’ve
grown into a choir of over 90 members and
a
group
of 25 to 30 volunteers. We are proud of our
growth but more proud of the fact that we
are all volunteers. It’s amazing to me”
Want to join in on the fun? Visit the
group’s website at gmcommunitychoir.org
for information about joining or reach out
on Facebook.
“I could not be more proud and humble
to lead this group,” said Christensen. “They
show up, put in the time and give 100 percent
in everything they do. The countless
volunteers that it takes to put all of this
together is unbelievable. To our audience,
we hope you enjoy the show and know that
by buying a ticket you are supporting local
charities and supporting the arts in our
community.”

Culture Passes
Columbus Metropolitan Library (CML)
has partnered with Chamber Music
Columbus to make a select number of tickets
available for library customers to check out
for free.
Two Chamber Music Columbus Culture
Passes are now available at each of CML’s
23 locations. Each pass admits two individuals
to select performances. CML offers its
cardholders free admission to select central
Ohio cultural institutions.
The Culture Pass program enables CML
customers to borrow passes just as they
would a book: using their library card. This
onetime pass, which must be checked out in
person, grants customers limited free
access to institutions that would otherwise
charge admission fees.
CML piloted the program in 2018, offering
Culture Passes to Franklin Park
Conservatory and the Wexner Center for
the Arts. Since then, CML has worked to
expand the number of participating organizations.
“With the help of our community partners,
we’re working to expose all central
Ohioans to the many renowned cultural
gems we are fortunate to have at our
doorstep,” said CML Chief Community
Engagement Officer Donna Zuiderweg. “As
a public library, our role is to ensure equal
access to all, and that goes well beyond
books.”
Participating cultural organizations:

The Culture Pass program offers each
participating institution the opportunity to
select which specific CML locations will
offer their passes based on the neighborhoods
and communities associated with
their outreach, diversity and inclusion
goals. Therefore, Culture Passes are only
available for in-person customer checkout
at the specific CML locations. Culture
Passes cannot be reserved like traditional
library items. However, customers can
check their availability at columbuslibrary.org
by typing “Culture Pass” into the
catalog search bar.
Each participating organization offers
their passes to CML and its customers for
free. CML does not purchase passes as it
does with traditional library materials.
Each organization sets its own rules for
how many individuals are covered under
its passes and on which days the passes
will be honored. Partner organizations also
set the number of passes allotted to each
designated CML location.

Homeless grants
The Ohio Department of Development
recently announced $15.7 million in grants
to help Ohioans facing housing instability
and homelessness find temporary, emergency
shelter and permanent housing.
Ohio Housing Trust Fund (OHTF) dollars
are being awarded through the
Homeless Crisis Response program to
assist 40 nonprofit and local government
agencies across the state with homelessness
prevention, rapid re-housing, and
emergency shelter services.
The funds will assist 31 agencies operating
37 emergency shelters and support 12
housing stability programs to benefit an
estimated 39,000 Ohioans.
The Community Shelter Board in
Franklin County will receive a $1 million
grant to contract with Lutheran Social

vide emergency shelter for homeless individuals.
Supportive services provided include
case management, referrals to community
service providers, and placement in permanent
housing.
The Homeless Crisis Response Program
has two components: Emergency Shelter
Operations and Housing Stability.
The Emergency Shelter component provides
for shelter operations, administration,
and data evaluation in emergency shelters,
while the Housing Stability component
includes homelessness prevention, rapid rehousing,
administration, and data evaluation.
Each of Ohio’s 88 counties is located
within one of 25 homeless planning regions
throughout the state. Grants are awarded
yearly, with approximately half of the
regions receiving funding every other year
for a two-year period.
