CELEBRITY TAKEOVER

By Mariah Nieslanik

How

Blessed

Am I?

Photos by Oscar Picazo

Growing up in a peach tree

field as a farm girl in Grand

Junction, Colo., I never could

have dreamed where my life

would end up. The glitz and

glamor of being a Las Vegas

showgirl were never on my

bingo card growing up. I started

dancing at 3 years old, and

I remember feeling energized

and freed by the limelight. But

once I hit middle school, I

focused on sports full time.

My dream job growing up was

to be a high school basketball

coach. However, the universe

had a different plan for me –

one that involved the glitz and

glamor of Las Vegas. I moved

to Las Vegas when I was 18

with a crazy dream of becoming

a showgirl. I worked so

many odd jobs until I luckily

landed my first professional

job. I have been steadily

working as a dancer and model

ever since.

I auditioned for my dream

job at “Fantasy” at The Luxor

and was so lucky to be hired

as a swing dancer, which is a

part-time role. Since then, I

have been able to climb the

ladder – in stilettos – and can

proudly say I am a featured

dancer in AND co-producer of

the award-winning show.

Even more recently, I was also

promoted to one of the toughest,

yet most rewarding jobs

ever – a MOM!

I am so lucky to work for such

an amazing producer in Anita

Mann, who has allowed me to

continue to work throughout

my pregnancy as well as during

this new motherhood journey I

am on. Once my pregnant belly

became too hard to dance on

stage, my focus switched to my

production duties behind the

scenes.

This was such a beautiful pivot

and worked out well because

I’m a workaholic, so I never

wanted to take any time off.

Believe it or not, I was sending

payroll while I was in labor at

a hospital and, honestly,

I wouldn’t have it any other

way.

Too often in show business,

getting pregnant is a death sentence

for a dancer. The idea of

having it all simply didn’t exist

years ago. Dancers had

to choose between having

a family or career. The fear of

“Will my body bounce back?,”

“Will my position be filled?,”

“Will I be able to juggle my

career and caring for

a baby?” can be terrifying and

exhausting, but in the era of

female empowerment, it turns

out – with an amazing support

team – it really is possible to

have it all!

That’s one area our cast really

shines – we’re more than just

colleagues, we’re friends, and

I’m truly fortunate to consider

them my family. Having a team

like I do, led by Anita, who

was choreographing Michael

Jackson while seven months

pregnant and continued choreographing

other productions

after giving birth, has really

helped make it possible for

me. Words cannot express

how lucky I feel to have the

opportunity to have a career

and family.

Our show is all about bringing

fantasies to life on stage, and

mine is to be back on stage and

feeling the joy of performing

for a live audience again.

I hope to have the opportunity

to dance again and will work

hard to continue my dream.

I know my body won’t

be the same as it was before.

It’s a battle, but an enjoyable

one, learning to appreciate

my new body and the magical

journey I am on.

Beyond the physical hurdles

I face getting back into performance

shape, I know there will

be mental challenges along the

way – balancing returning to

work and being a new mom,

finding time and encouraging

myself to relax and spend as

much time with my new family

as possible.

As I look back and reflect, I tell

myself daily – and sometimes

hourly – to be kind and patient,

which is something everyone

should do in their life. I know

with the support system I have

and the work ethic I learned

growing up on a farm, being

back on the stage is a possibility

for me.

I have done so much more in

life than I had planned so far,

and I know there will be so

much more in the future, but

without a doubt, being a mom

to a beautiful baby girl is the

best thing I have ever done.

Delicious

Delis

Our favorite places to get

chopped liver, pastrami, matzo

balls, bagels and more

Saginaw’s Delicatessen at Circa

One big reason Detroit staple Saginaw’s

Delicatessen stands out on this delicious

delis list: It’s open 24 hours. Yes, 24 hours.

So, 9 a.m., 5 p.m., 12 a.m., nosh to your

heart’s content. The sandwiches, soups and

popular new-ish menu item the meatloaf

don’t disappoint. You’re so lucky, Downtown

Las Vegas. 8 Fremont St., Las Vegas.

(702) 726-5506; CircaLasVegas.com

Weiss Deli in Henderson

This mom-and-pop in Henderson is

widely considered one of the best in

town, so expect a wait at the small location,

with a small bakery, especially at

lunchtime. It gets this list’s vote for best

chicken noodle soup with matzo ball

and chopped liver sandwich. And buy

a fudge brownie on the way out. 2744 N.

Green Valley Parkway, Henderson. (702)

454-0565; Weiss is so old school,

it doesn’t have a website.

Siegel’s Bagelmania

This place is a bit underrated because

it’s east of the Las Vegas Strip, but the

sandwiches (you can’t go wrong with the

pastrami and chopped liver), soup and

service are always solid. Bonuses: an extensive

and large bakery (for macaroons

and black and white cookies) and an

outlet of Pinkbox Doughnuts. 252 Convention

Center Drive, Las Vegas. (702)

369-3322; SiegelsBagelmania.com

The Bagel Cafe in Summerlin

This New York-style deli is one solid option

for Summerlin residents. It is spacious, with

ample free parking, and the bakery is large, as

well. Residents have argued which is better,

The Bagel Cafe or Weiss? Decide for yourself,

but you the truth is you really can’t go wrong.

Junior’s at Resorts World

This is the new kid on the block in the deli

is front and center, served at Circus

expect solid sandwiches, salads and chicken

at this classic and large diner-style restaurant.

and sandwiches are fantastic. Bonus: Sadelle’s

Top Chef

New James Beard nominee Brian

Howard talks Sparrow + Wolf,

Half Bird and the future

By Bob Barnes

With a 20+ year culinary career in Las Vegas, Chef

Brian Howard earned his stripes working at celebrated

Michelin-starred restaurants alongside notable chefs

including Thomas Keller, Kerry Simon, Andre Rochat

and David Myers before opening his own restaurants

Sparrow + Wolf and Half Bird Chicken & Beer.

Howard has been featured on Food Network’s

“Chopped” and appeared as a judge with Gordon Ramsay

on “Master Chef Jr.” and as the winning contender

on FYI’s “Late Night Chef Fight.” Howard’s most recent

accolade is being nominated as a 2024 James Beard

Foundation Best Chef: Southwest Award semifinalist.

We sat down with the acclaimed chef to talk about the

nomination, Sparrow + Wolf in Chinatown (4480 Spring

Mountain Road; (702) 790-2147, SparrowandWolfLV.com)

and Half Bird in Henderson (725 S. Green Valley Parkway;

(702) 202-2250, HalfBird.com) and his future plans.

You have been named a semifinalist in the Best

Chef: Southwest category in the 2024 James Beard

Foundation Awards. What would winning this award

mean to you?

We are very excited about the recent recognition. There

are a lot of talented chefs in this country, so getting

a nod for my life’s work feels extremely rewarding.

Receiving a James Beard Foundation Award nomination

has always been a bucket list item for me, so it’s

another big notch on the belt.

Can you describe the focus and concept of your restaurants

Sparrow + Wolf and Half Bird Chicken & Beer and

some of your favorite menu items?

Sparrow + Wolf is like going to your favorite dinner party

where the food is familiar, yet new, and our focus has

always been hospitality-driven and “people-first” while

creating a room where the guest feels like they’re the

most important person in it. We combine bold flavors

from around the globe in a delicious hybrid seasonal

manner using the best ingredients we can find.

My favorites right now are the grilled oysters bathed in a

Thai chili jam butter and the grouper cooked in banana

leaf with a Ma Po tofu sauce. We’re also dry-aging

steaks in-house that are being cooked over live fire.

Half Bird Chicken & Beer is our best-in-class chicken

shop. We have something for the whole family: simple

rotisserie chicken, a salad, a Signature Sichuan Hot

Chicken Sandwich, the “best nuggs on the planet” (I’m

sure of it), rotisserie ramen and a giant chicken parm.

We wanted to create a place for friends to congregate

and watch our local sports teams play but not have to

worry about leaving the kiddos behind. There are arcade

games, an outdoor lawn with corn hole, TVs and our

self-tapping draft beer system (pouring local beers)

guests are free to pour by the ounce to try the different

selections.

Some of my personal favorite sides are the rotisserie

smashed potatoes with cheese sauce and chili garlic

crunch and the rotisserie corn with togarashi butter.

How do you like working and living in Las Vegas?

I’ve been here for 23 years now, and Las Vegas is home

for me. I’m so grateful for this city and all the support

I’ve received and have had the pleasure of working with

so many incredible people, raising a family and creating

some of the most epic memories.

Are any plans for a new restaurant concept in the

works?

I’m a creative type, so I am always writing and developing

new concepts. We're currently raising extra capital

and hope to announce a new seafood-driven concept in

the southwest valley within the next few months.

Stay tuned!

Salud! Places in Las Vegas to celebrate

National Wine Day on May 25

By Marisa Finetti

National Wine Day is May 25, and while I love a day

dedicated to one of my favorite beverages, let’s enjoy wine

year-round. Furthermore, it should be an international

celebration because of all the gems that can be discovered

across the globe. Allow me to spotlight some places, and

while you’re there, consider trying something new. It’s

National Wine Day, after all. The wines aren’t on holiday;

they’re celebrating with us!

On the Strip

Delilah inside Wynn Las Vegas unveils the most luxurious

ambiance, starting with the opulent bar that sweeps into

the dining room. The wine list is just as indulgent, with a

menu that offers hidden gems to rare bottlings and highly

coveted brands. Delilah is offering a vintage spotlight

through summer featuring wines from 1990. Imagine all the

fruit coming into the wineries around the world during that

year’s harvest now captured in bottles and selected for

your pleasure at Delilah. WynnLasVegas.com

At The Venetian, check out Sala 118 for a pre-dinner or

post-show. Named for the 118 islands in Venice, enjoy an

elevated experience in a beautiful space for wines by the

glass and a growing half-bottle selection focusing on Italian

and domestic wines. VenetianLasVegas.com

Inside Fontainebleau, Don’s Prime offers “sip and savor"”

dinner experiences that kick off May 20. The wine dinner

features six rare vintage wines largely sold out in the marketplace

from Promontory, the Harlan family’s renowned

wine-growing endeavor in Napa Valley. FontainebleauLasVegas.com

Carbone in Aria is another spot to escape for dinner and

wine. If you are a Nebbiolo lover, the classic choices from

Barolo and Barbaresco are deep in this list, but add a neighboring

grape to your repertoire. The charming Dolcetto is a

highly prized grape well-loved in Piemonte. It also happens

to be one of the best values on the list. Try Barolo

Mascarello, Dolcetto d’Alba. Aria.MGMResorts.com

VEGASPRIME.COM | MAY 19, 2024

Off the Strip

Visitors always want to drink like a local, so let’s go to a

few places.

In The Arts District, the James Beard-nominated wine bar

Garagiste is a place to be seen. Start with Tribaut-Schloesser

Rosé Champagne because pink bubbles are extraordinary,

and this bottling is Pinot Meunier-dominant, which is

exceptional and rare. Or go for the liter of Austria’s Shreiner

Weissburgunder because big bottles of Pinot Blanc on

these warmer days are always a win-win. But if you just

want a glass, drill down to a hyper-local grape from the

largest of the Canary Islands, Tenerife. The Marmajuelo

variety thrives on the island’s volcanic sands, delivering

a lean, smokey wine with breezy marine personality.

GaragistLV.com

At Monzú Italian Oven + Bar, choices are abundant from the

all-Italian selection housed in a list that is far from ordinary.

Embark on Monzu’s beverage book, a page-turner boasting

an adventurous and educational way to learn about wine

and spirits. While sipping on a bottle of Mt. Etna’s Benanti’s

Etna Rosso from ancient vines, imagine treading on gnarly

basalt rocks while smelling the minerality escaping from

beneath Europe’s most active volcano. MonzuLV.com

Another local spot fast becoming popular is Wineaux, the

newly opened “wine market, bar and escape” by James

Beard-winning Chef Shawn McClain at The UnCommons.

Explore the great wine selection and sink into a friendly

atmosphere. Head to Hungary with Bordog Bromuhley

Furmint-Harselevlu Dry Tokaj. While it’s a mouthful to say,

it’s a simple and exceptional dry white wine. Pair it with

Wineaux’s roasted eggplant. WineauxLV.com

want to try something up-and-coming, ask for Derthona,

a white wine made in Piemonte from the recently revived

Timorraso grape. Ask the sommelier to tell you the story.

FerrarosLasVegas.com

Red Rock Resort, offers a variety of wine experiences

under one roof, including T-Bones, which boasts the most

expansive wine selection off the Strip. There is something

for everyone, with a large portion designed to pair with the

fantastic menu. Osteria Fiorella offers a focused wine list

highlighting the regions and styles of Italy and a perfect

spot to dine al fresco. Go for dinner or reserve a spot for

Sunday brunch to enjoy a bright white wine or a refreshing

spritz on draft. Head to Lotus of Siam for crisp whites and

big, bold reds from Germany and the U.S. to pair with their

classic Northern Thai cuisine. RedRockResort.com

At Tivoli Village, a day of shopping calls for Ada’s Food +

Wine for an upbeat vibe and operated by some of the most

knowledgeable in Las Vegas. An ever-changing wine list

offers plenty of new discoveries. Take a flight of wines,

explore skin contact orange wines. For a fun low-intervention

wine, try Catch & Release Anyone Anytime Anyplace

2022 – a clean blend of Syrah, Grenache and a touch of

Chardonnay and Pinot Gris that is a totally crushable red

– served chilled, of course! And with a name like that, it’s

a reminder that wine really is for anytime, anywhere, any

season. AdasLV.com

Near the Strip, Ferraro’s Ristorante has been named Tre

Bicchieri and Three Forks from Gambero Rosso, a highly

respected recognition in the Italian wine world. You’ll find

deep selections of all the classic Italian wines, but if you

In an all-Mexican battle during Cinco

superstar Canelo Alvarez outslugged Jaime

Munguia in a super-middleweight championship

match before 17,492 at T-Mobile

Arena. Despite strong support for Munguia,

the loss included the first knockdown of his

44-bout career.

Alvarez’s fourth defense of his four

168-pound titles was scored at 115-113,

117-110 and 116-111 by the three judges,

while ESPN scored it 118-109. This was

the third fight in a row Alvarez (61-2-2, 39

KOs) scored a knockdown. He also dropped

Jermell Charlo and John Ryder to the canvas

in decision wins last year.

“I’m very proud that all the Mexicans are

here watching us,” Alvarez told ESPN. “ ...

He’s a great fighter. He’s strong, he’s smart.

... But he’s a little slow. I can see every

punch. Sometimes he got me because I get
