Unretirement:

Working Beyond Retirement Age

Retirement. It’s something we don’t give

a lot of thought to as young people, but as

the working years tick by and we accumulate

experience in one or a variety of industries,

the idea of a time ahead where we don’t have

to live in the formulaic, repetitive lifestyle

of wake, work, sleep, repeat becomes

increasingly enticing.

Suzi Brown explains

Charles Upham resident Lynn

Andrews with their rodent traps.

The idea of accumulating some

retirement savings, ticking off

those life goals and starting to

set some bucket list checklists for

our retirement seems sensible.

So when you eventually farewell

your workmates and slide into

your best comfy, elasticated

waist pants, will this enticing

lifestyle hold the satisfaction

you expected?

Covid and the worldwide

pandemic have created an

opportunity for those with a

lifetime of experience to return

to paid employment, with more

flexible options made available

in an attempt to entice people

back into the working world,

particularly in the health sector.

It’s a win/win situation, the

industries which are crying out

for more workers get a lifetime

of knowledge and experience,

while those who return to work

get to maintain a lifestyle that

retirement perhaps couldn’t offer

while enjoying a balance of shifts

and work that suits their wants

and needs. Some have chosen to

come back part-time or utilise

their skills for a fixed term, and

enjoy the mental stimulation

and companionship of workplace

friendships while employers are

open to flexibility. Some might

even discover a new career path

or passion that had been tucked

away waiting for the time and

energy that retirement affords.

50% of Kiwis aged

65 - 69 are currently

employed, and the

New Zealand

government recognises

the benefits for the

economy and health of

our nation in the idea

of working passed the

usual age cut-off.

Working past retirement age

doesn’t need to be paid. Recently,

due to a family connection that

involved fostering a boy after

the Chernobyl disaster, a kindhearted

Ryman Healthcare staff

member was inspired to connect

their villages with a project of

knitting teddies for thousands

of displaced Ukranian children.

There are now 50 Ryman

villages working together that

aim to have 20,000 teddies

posted across the world. This

kind of work gives people a

sense of accomplishment and

the satisfaction they might

have made a displaced child’s

life a little bit better. It’s a sense

of purpose and achievement

that they would have enjoyed

during their paid working years

that contributes to their overall

well-being.

50% of Kiwis aged 65 - 69 are

currently employed, and the

New Zealand government

recognises the benefits for the

economy and health of our

nation in the idea of working

past the usual age cut-off.

The Older Workers Employment

Action Plan (OWEAP)

encompasses those aged 50

and over who are working or

need to work. The OWEAP

handbook opens with the

statement “The vision of the

Later Life Strategy) is that older

New Zealanders lead valued,

connected and fulfilling lives.

It promotes the importance of

meaningful work for older people,

in achieving financial security

and economic participation.” It’s

not all smooth sailing though;

statistics show that older workers

can face challenges in finding and

staying in paid employment. If

they are made redundant or have

had to leave paid employment, it

can take longer for them to find

another job than younger people,

and they may have lower incomes

when they eventually do.

Christchurch resident Lynda

Burdekin wasn’t ready to retire

completely, so took a part-time

job and the opportunity to do

something completely different

and explore new interests.

Debra Richardson, Victorian Sales and Community Relations Manager, with some

Yuri Bears that were knitted by residents at Diana Isaac Retirement Village.

In a Retirement

Village setting, there

are opportunities to

continue working in

a voluntary capacity.

For Lynda,

money also

played a

part - leading

to a more

comfortable

lifestyle and

some funds to travel, (though

Covid put paid to that). She

enjoyed meeting a completely

new group of people, and

working locally meant being

more involved in the community,

with less travel time too. The

benefits also included finding

that a lifetime of skills can be

put to good use! There are a few

drawbacks, Lynda says “people

are surprised that you are over

70 and still working. I’m also not

as fit and healthy as in the past,

which sometimes makes work

difficult too”.

In a Retirement Village setting,

there are opportunities to

continue working in a voluntary

capacity. Broadview Lifecare

have a very special resident who

volunteers to help with their

beautiful gardens. Before coming

to Broadview, gardening was a

very important part of her life and

‘fixing up’ their gardens is one

of her key priorities, benefiting

her health and wellbeing, by

continuing to do what she loves.

They have many residents

who volunteer to help, and are

encouraged to continue doing...

At Settlers the blokes in the blokes shed use their skills to make Ukraine birds

the things that are important to

them. The Broadview pets are

cared for by the residents too.

In the same vein as Broadview,

at Settlers the blokes in blokes

shed used their skills to make

Ukraine birds to sell, with

proceeds going to refugees, the

blokes also restored a dingy, with

proceeds going to Coastguard.

At some Summerset villages

there are residents who volunteer

to assist others, for example

in the care centre – this may

include assisting with morning

tea, reading to residents or doing

different activities with them.

Maygrove run a voluntary buddy

driver system for their residents

and most activities running in

the village are run by resident

volunteers. The residents social

club committee decide what type

of events they would like to hold

and management support them.

These experiences are enriching

for both the volunteer and recipient

and often allows former careers

and skills, such as teaching, to

continue to be used and shared.

There are some helpful resources

available for those who would like

to enjoy the benefits of working

in their older years. The website

www.betterworkinlaterlife.co.nz

is an evidence-based resource

supporting older people to

engage in the workforce, and for

businesses to realise the benefits

of Aotearoa’s ageing population.

It includes case studies with

public and private organisations to

determine best practices to address

the challenges and opportunities

of an ageing workforce, as well

as handy resources and advice

about working in later life. You’ll

find the links useful too, for both

employees and employers.

Times have changed. We are

healthier and fitter into our older

years and the old adage ‘use it

or lose it’ has never been more

apt - so why not continue to

enjoy either paid employment or

volunteer work for as long as

we can!

THE PEOPLE'S CHOICE

ANNUAL AWARDS

For the past 7 years, Aged Advisor

New Zealand has recognised

those villages and care facilities

where residents and family have

expressed their high levels of

satisfaction with the service.

“Unlike any other awards in the

aged care or village sector, the

Aged Advisor winners are based

purely on independent reviews

and ratings from customers

throughout New Zealand.”

In consultation with the

University of Canterbury,

AgedAdvisor has developed a

series of algorithms to calculate

the ratio and mean score of

reviews over a 12-month period.

Facilities with more residents

are aggregated by the number of

‘reviews to residents ratio’

to reflect a true score across

all villages.

The following Winners and

Finalists are from the 2022

Awards from more than 1100

eligible facilities. Facilities must

receive a minimum of 3 reviews

within the previous 12 month

period and have 5 or more reviews

within the last 3 years to qualify.

AgedAdvisor does not charge

for entry into the Awards, and

provides Freepost forms for

residents to post in, ensuring no

facility is disadvantaged.

“These winners not only

demonstrate a commitment to

providing the best care possible,

we believe they’ve set a great bar

for others to follow.”

Recognising Excellence - five years running

We describe Malyon

House as a family.

It is rare for a facility to win an

award 5 years running. So, when

it does happen, Aged Advisor is

happy to recognise this terrific

achievement.

In August 2021, Malyon House,

a 57 bed rest home and hospital

located in the heart of Mount

Maunganui, was awarded

with their 5th Trophy for

Best Medium/Large Care

facility in the North Island

and AgedAdvisor’s “5 Years

Running” Award.

Amy Munro, Owner says, “Our

team have been thrilled, year

after year, to be recognized

by these awards. It really lifts

spirits, especially in these

pandemic years, where the

stakes are higher in terms

of protecting residents; and

workloads are heavy when

challenged with staff absences.

To have a row of five awards on

the wall is just amazing!”

“We describe Malyon House as a

family. Our family is made up of

our residents, their families, our

team members and their families.

We welcome new residents to our

home and hope that they will

enjoy their time as part of the

Malyon House family.”

She puts their consistent

recognition down to personal

service. “When you come in the

front door, everyone knows your

name and says hello, asks how

your day is going. Our amazing

team go the extra mile to do all

they can to make people feel at

home here.”

In 2022 the Malyon House team

decided to step aside, and let

another facility experience

the thrill of winning an Aged

Advisor award.

NEW ZEALAND

We featured Ryman Healthcare in our

2021 Magazine when they had previously

won the Best Group Provider Award three

years running. We acknowledge their

achievement again for the 2022 Awards.

The Ryman Healthcare model

started over 35 years ago with

the adage that it’s got to be

“good enough for mum or dad”,

a philosophy that they have

continued to uphold while

pioneering much of the change

within the village and aged care

space. With two of their villages

taking out two of the four Best

Villages awards, plus two Finalist

awards, Ryman continues to

prove a popular People’s Choice.

Full continuum of care, with rest

home, hospital and special care

facilities are standard with most

of the Rymans offering, and their

villages normally include an

all-weather bowling green, café,

heated indoor pool, hairdresser,

beauty therapist and library.

Cheyne Chalmers, Ryman

Healthcare CEO NZ said:

“We were delighted to take out

these awards because they are

recognition from the people who

know us best and have taken the

time to review us. The recognition

is a tribute to a team who work

so hard each day to provide the

best possible experience for our

residents and their families.

Thank you New Zealand!’

With another 15 villages either

planned or under construction

in New Zealand and Australia,

and a further 12 as ‘green fields

or brown fields’ (landbanked),

Ryman Healthcare are wanting

to meet future demand for their

services that residents continue

to speak highly about.

Summerset were our Best Group

Provider for 2021, and this year

they are one of 3 finalists to be

recognised due to continued

high levels of satisfaction shown

across their villages. Two of their

villages were also recognised

again in this year’s awards.

“Our guiding philosophy is to bring

the best of life to our residents in

everything we do. We’re really

pleased to be recognised for the

work that we do to provide a great

community and experience to our

residents across the country.”

New Kid on the Block…

Vivid Living - the

“New Kid” in

the retirement

village sector, has

partnered with

well-known brand,

Fletcher Living, who

has been building

houses in Aotearoa

since 1909. The

result is an exciting

new retirement

village model.

Nigel Matthews investigates

Gemma Gloyne, Head of Vivid

Living (Fletcher Building’s

Retirement Business Unit)

says “When we stood back and

looked at the communities

we were building, we saw a

real opportunity to integrate

independent retirement living

within our already thriving

neighbourhoods.”

“Vivid Living’s approach is

to create a strong sense of

connection with the village

itself but also the wider Fletcher

Living neighbourhood.” Their

villages are smaller in scale

(around 50-60 villas) designed to

create community relationships

between residents and the local

Community Manager.

“Each villa comes with

touchscreen technology, provided

by Spritely, which will help

residents stay socially connected

with friends and family… and are

designed to Lifemark® principles”

adds Gemma.

Many villages offer in-home

touchscreens and follow bestpractice

building standards. So,

what is the real difference?

Residents moving into a Vivid

Living community will enter an

Occupational Rights Agreement

(ORA) with a 15% Deferred

Management Fee (DMF) - lower

than most traditional villages.

When the time comes to leave

the Vivid Living community,

residents will share in 50% of

the capital gains, less the cost of

refurbishment, that results from

the sale.

If they have not resold your villa

after four months from the date

your ORA ends, Vivid Living

guarantee to repay you the

Repayment Sum.

Vivid Living will also return

10% of your Residence Advance

within five working days of your

ORA ending.

Their terms are in contrast to

the majority of ORA’s which

do not offer capital gain, and

where the DMF is 30% (with the

exception of Ryman at 20% and

Summerset at 25%, plus a handful

of others). But, the clincher is the

guaranteed return of funds after

exit.

Brian Peat, President for the

Retirement Village Residents

Association calls this a

‘game-changer’.

“This is an example of an operator

considering the needs of residents

as opposed to the strict financial

22

profits of the business. Fletchers

are clearly leading the way

for change and RVResidents

consider their approach to be

very fair and equitable.”

Vivid Living Villages won’t

provide onsite care facilities,

but Gemma says they are

partnering with Private Care

NZ to support residents with

the level of care they choose.

All residents can receive annual

and monthly health checks as

part of the partnership, and can

purchase tailored care packages

to meet any specific needs.

The first Vivid Living

community will be at Red Beach

with a number of locations

planned over the next 3 years,

including Karaka and Waiata

Shores (Takanini) and also

works starting at The Hill

Ellerslie, Three Kings, and One

Central in Christchurch.

Signing On The Dotted Line.

A Legal Perspective.

Adapted from “The Legal Process Before Signing an Occupation Right Agreement”

By Kristine King

There are a few certainties in life, aside from

death and taxes… and spending time with a

lawyer when entering a retirement village is one.

Whilst the cynical among us

might think that lawyers are just

looking for more opportunities

to “clip the ticket”, in reality

there are legal safeguards built

into our legislation requiring

the use of a lawyer before

accepting an Occupation Rights

Agreement (ORA).

The Retirement Villages Act 2003

(the Act) prohibits any person

from being offered or accepting

an offer to become a resident

in a retirement village unless it

is in accordance with an ORA.

The ORA must meet specific

requirements for form and

content that are set out in

the Act, the schedules of the Act

and certain regulations made

under the Act.

Before you can discuss your

proposed move to a retirement

village and the terms of any ORA

with your lawyer, you will likely

find that your lawyer will be using

other acronyms like AML/CFT,

CDD, EDD and so on. Lawyers are

among several professions whose

members are affected by changes

to the Anti-Money Laundering and

Countering Financing of Terrorism

Act 2009 (AML/CFT Act).

For most prospective residents

this process means that your

lawyer will ask to sight and certify

a current copy of your passport

or driver’s licence and some

evidence of proof of your current

address. It can be very frustrating

to deal with these numerous

requests for the same information,

but your lawyer must complete

these verification processes even

when they have acted for a client

for a long period. Each lawyer

or law firm faces prosecution

and large financial penalties if

they fail to follow the procedure

mandated by the Department of

Internal Affairs (DIA).

Your lawyer will appreciate that

the volume of information given

to you by the village, for you

to read and understand can be

overwhelming and confusing,

so they may try to assist by

preparing a summary or a

reporting letter for you. They will

want to ensure that you fully

understand the nature of the

ORA and its implications before

signing, so they can give the

certificate required by the Act.

However, for them to best advise

you on the implications of the

ORA’s provisions on you, they will

need some information on your

own circumstances, expectations

and requirements. This is

essential so that the advice is

tailored to you and to also ensure

that the ORA contains legally

enforceable terms that match the

statements or representations

made to you by the retirement

village. Ideally you would have

this discussion with your lawyer

before they start reviewing the

ORA and other materials.

You are likely to be asked by the

retirement village to also create

a will and enduring powers of

attorney or to update your

existing documents. For some

strange reason people do not

normally relish the prospect

of extra time in the company

of their lawyer. As these are

significant legal steps on your

part it is recommended that you

allow plenty of time to ensure all

processes are undertaken properly.

It’s a big financial decision that

you’re making and you want the

best advice.

The take-home point:

Make sure you have

a good lawyer that

understands your

wishes and has

experience with ORA’s.

Falls Prevention &

Exercise In Retirement

As a young healthy person, the idea of

taking classes to encourage balance seems

far off and unnecessary, however taking care

of your physical health now could be a great

building block to being on an even keel in

your twilight years.

Suzi Brown explains

aerobics, plus they have larger

group outdoor activities such

as bowls and croquet available

for those who enjoy mixing

socialising with sport.

In a similar vein to Maygrove,

Settlers Lifestyle Village in Albany

says they offer a selection of Walk

n talk, petanque, lawn bowls, table

tennis, keep fit, kako line dancing

classes, therapeutics, aqua size,

Tai Chi, table tennis, darts, indoor

bowls, and Xer sit! Alongside this

enticing list there is also Walk n

Talk Friday mornings – one hour

walk around local area, through

bush, park and shopping area

which offers a nice opportunity

to distract from the effort of

exercising by chatting with a

friend!

Statistics show that one in

three over 65 year olds have a

fall annually, with that figure

increasing to one in two by the

age of 80. Working to lower these

figures is a combined effort by

those who really care about

our elderly: family members,

professional health care workers,

retirement villages and care

homes. There are so many

wonderful, fun ways to stay active

that it really doesn’t need to be a

chore to retain your strength and

reduce the risks associated with

growing older. Whether you enjoy

living in a retirement village with

access to exercise facilities and

classes, or out in the community,

there are options for every type of

person no matter your interests or

physical abilities.

What types of strength and

balance classes or similar groups,

do a range of Retirement Villages

across the country provide, with

the aim of preventing accidents?

Maygrove Village in Orewa, is

one of those villages who provide

opportunities for residents to

stay active in a fun and inclusive

environment. Toni Hatton who is

the Assistant Village Manager at

Maygrove, said their village offers

a walking group and three fitness

classes per week. Residents can

choose from aquacise, sit fit and

Ryman’s is another company

who encourages exercise. Their

website provides information

about their wellness programmes

- based on the belief that ‘you’re

never too old to exercise - just

find what’s right for you’. Ryman

Triple A, which stands for Ageless,

Active, Aware is a complimentary

exercise programme available to

all Ryman residents. The classes

are designed with older people in

mind to enhance their quality of

life and wellbeing with the aim

of improving strength, flexibility,

balance, agility, and giving

greater independence for longer.

Residents can try functional

fitness and circuit, and for those

less mobile, a ‘sit and be fit’ class.

All Summerset villages offer

a variety of opportunities to

exercise from bowls, to walking

groups, to yoga, to aqua aerobics…

and many more! They have

designed their own signature

26

AGED ADVISOR

exercise programme, CB Fit,

which is an accredited falls

prevention class as a part of

the “Live Stronger for Longer”

initiative. This has been rolling

out across the villages since 2019

and is built on a foundation of the

4Ps: Prevent, Protect, Progress

and Preserve. Summerset have

also recently developed their

own chair-based exercise classes

as an extension of the standing

strength and balance class and

these will be released later this

year. A short video of CB Fit can

be viewed here: www.youtube.

com/watch?v=jvSp7voLCgM

Falls are more prevalent in

older people, and at Broadview

Lifecare, they know that physical

strength and a person’s health

and wellbeing plays an important

role in preventing injury. Their

specialised activities team

includes a Diversional Therapist

who is also an Occupational

Therapist and tailors exercise

programmes to individual needs.

They have many different inhouse

activities and focus on what the

resident enjoyed throughout

their life, such as ball games, to

encourage participation.

Indoor bowls provides another

form of exercise and social

connection. As well as in-house

activities, they have lots of

outings in the community to

support movement and create

meaningful experiences.

To balance all these excellent

opportunities available in

retirement villages, what

questions should you be

asking about staying active

while making a choice about a

retirement village or aged care?

Jaclyn Chishom, an Occupational

Therapist who works in older

persons health suggests “Ask the

facility for their physiotherapy to

client ratio if they advertise they

have physiotherapy available.

And ask what expected amount of

time is to be given daily /weekly

to the resident for physiotherapy

input or is there a criteria to be

seen by a facility physio”. Her

concerns are that “aged care

facilities market that they have

physiotherapy available, but

this resource is very limited.

Some large facilities have one

contracted physiotherapist that

comes in once a week to see all

their ‘priority’ residents - which

are usually new residents or

returning from hospital residents

who require the initial physio

assessment or a review to

determine manual handling and

or mobility status. They barely

even get the chance to actually do

‘exercise’ or set up programmes

for exercise for residents.”

Jaclyn also adds that facilities

need to be asked about

occupational therapist,

diversional therapist, and/or

activity/therapy assistants - do

they have one, what is the ratio,

how often will the residents

be seen individually or is it all

activities done in a group setting?

The concern she mentions is that

often those residents who don’t

want to go to facility groups or

for whom it is too difficult for

them to get there, won’t get the

hands-on support, guidance or

programme to do daily exercises.

It is these residents that are in

greater need of active exercises.

Retirement villages won’t often

put their financial resources

into individual active exercise

needs. What a retirement village

would really benefit from is

staff member who can offer that

individual one-on-one guidance

and support and work closely

with the resident week to week to

AGED ADVISOR 27

see real improvement.

Within the wider community

activities on offer, Age Concern’s

fall’s prevention programme

- SAYGO - is a proven way of

increasing both your strength and

balance. Those who participated

in the programme for 10 weeks

were found to be stronger and

less likely to fall, and those who

attended for a year found even

greater benefits. It was originally

developed in Dunedin and now

has a number of classes across

the nation with thousands

of participants. These are

community classes, which keep

fun and inclusion in mind with

accessabilty for all walks of life.

The entry is an affordable gold

coin donation which usually

covers venue hire. The first ten

weeks of the programme is run

by a paid instructor, who then is

replaced by volunteer peer leaders.

The New Zealand Government,

the Ministry of Health and ACC

have developed an initiative

‘Live Stronger for Longer’, which

aims to prevent or reduce falls by

having people attend strength

and balance classes. The ACC

assesses each programme to

understand what classes people

could be referred to, and the

public can see which classes are

approved. It’s a great idea to visit

their website www.livestronger.

org.nz where you can find a range

of tips about staying active, well

and independent. They also

have a home safety checklist and

advice for families and whanau

amongst information about

exercising at home, finding a

strength and balance class near

you and other resources.

A fun, social sport not to be

overlooked is dancing! Some

refer to it as ‘the kale of exercise’

due to it’s health benefits. Think

of it as an exercise superfood!

Rock n Roll revival classes can be

a great way to meet new people

and get the heart pumping

while making the most of the

opportunity to dress up in some

fun outfits! If rock n roll isn’t for

you, you could try Jazz dancing,

Salsa dancing or even Line

dancing. Participating in dance

allows elders to improve their

physical function, health and

well-being. Another beneficial

advantage is significantly

improving aerobic capacity,

lower body muscle endurance,

strength and flexibility, balance,

agility and gait.

Staying active and improving

your balance doesn’t have to be

kept just for exercise classes and

provided activities. Retirement is

an ideal time to start something

new or pick up an old sport,

especially when you consider how

easy it has become to be inactive

in our modern world with handy

mod-cons at our fingertips. Try

scheduling activity into your

calendar like you would an

appointment. You could spread

moderate to intense styles of

exercise across days of the week,

allowing time for recovery and

rest which are all the more sweet

when you’ve earned them! Pick

your most energetic time of day

that suits your own unique body

clock and try to rule out easy

excuses like bad weather or not

having the equipment you need to

exercise. Be kind to yourself and

celebrate what you can achieve!

Just starting a new routine and

bringing discipline, focus and

consistency into your life will not

only benefit you physically, but

also mentally.

Mental Health &

Wellness Among Elders

Life flows in it’s own

rhythm, and while we

ride the wave through

it’s tidal changes and

currents that each

new stage brings,

depression can be

just one of those

flows that we learn to

cope with and move

through gracefully,

given the right help

and support.

Suzi Brown explains

Depression is more than ‘feeling

a bit down’ for a short while - it

means persistent and ongoing

unhappiness. Many older

people experience depression,

yet it often goes undetected

and untreated. As part of our

health section, we take a look at

what causes depression, signs

of depression, who is at risk,

and how to gain help and move

forward if it affects you.

So, as an older person what

makes it less likely for your

depression to be recognised than

in a younger person? There’s a

range of reasons, and simply

reading them here may make

you feel more understood and

less alone. One of these reasons

is struggling to find a way to

put your troubled feelings into

words, or how to even start a

meaningful conversation with

your GP, or friend. Maybe you

don’t want to bother your doctor

as mental illness isn’t something

you can see physically so it’s hard

to describe, and then you don’t

want to add another pill to your

already overflowing daily regime

of medication. Perhaps you have

been brought up with the ‘keep

your chin up’ and carry on sort of

mentality and think it’s best

to square your shoulders and

power through on your own.

However you view it, depression

doesn’t need to be just another

part of aging. Given time and

support your elder years can be a

time of flourishing!

There is usually no one particular

factor that can be blamed

for kicking off depression.

Contributing causes could be:

grief, loss, change, loneliness,

poverty, illness, reaction to

medication and many others.

Often it is due to a combination of

factors. Sometimes it just seems

to come out of nowhere. It might

be difficult for you to be able to

tell if you’re just ‘feeling sad’ or

if it’s something more. If you’ve

recognised some familiar traits of

behaviour in the list of symptoms

you can develop strategies to help

you move forward, and feel good

again. Outdoor activities such

as gardening or a walk in nature

can do wonders for not only your

mental health, but the linked

benefits of physical health too.

Visiting with family and close

friends, reading a book or treating

yourself are all small ways that

add up to meaningful value.

Many Retirement Villages have

lounge spaces, cafés or extensive

gardens with seating where

residents can relax, and can

have family and friends to stay

anytime if they need some extra

whanau support. Contributing to

voluntary work or picking up an

old or new hobby can be a good

way of connecting and improving

your well-being.

Maygrove Village in Orewa

takes the novel approach of

supporting residents by allowing

them to have a pet. As long as

it is not a nuisance to others, is

fully vaccinated and leashed

in common areas. The hospital

on-site has pet therapy visits and

they have a resident cat that lives

there too! Assistant Manager Toni

AGED ADVISOR

Hatton is a great advocate for pet

therapy visits in particular “The

pet therapy visits are incredible,

we even have a horse called

Peanut who visits sometimes.

She’s great in the lift, and well

toilet trained but does not like to

get back in her float to leave, she

would rather graze on our lush

lawns! The hospital/palliative

residents just adore her!”

If none of these strategies are

helping, the next step is to visit

your GP. Your chances of recovery

and a return to your usual life

enjoyment are better if you seek

professional medical help sooner,

rather than later. You may find

it helps to take a support person

with you for your appointment as

if you are feeling down it can be

tricky to remember exactly what

your doctor has said. Your doctor

may suggest a Green Prescription

as a way to move forward. This

is a way to get support to make

some changes and take charge of

your health and well-being. With

a Green Prescription, you get your

own support person to work with

you to achieve your goals. Your

support person will know about

courses, programmes and other

services available in your area

and you can meet other people in

your community who are taking

steps to improve their health and

well-being. You will get personal

attention and the opportunity

for more social connection. You

can also ask your doctor about

seeing a counsellor and/or taking

medication. It’s important to

keep in mind that medication can

take a few weeks to start working

so you will need to stick with

it consistently to be able to see

changes and benefits.

Depending on your background

and own personal beliefs, you

may find comfort and meaning

in spirituality or religion. If you

live in an aged care facility, ask

if they have a dedicated staff

member to assist with supporting

You could look for a combination of these

symptoms in your behaviour and feelings:

• Feeling sad or down, most of

the day, nearly every day and

for weeks on end

• Change in sleeping patterns

• Loss of appetite or significant

weight loss or gain

• Loss of interest and pleasure

in life

• Noticeable changes in

behaviour such as irritability

or withdrawal from others

residents' needs beyond normal

activities. They could connect

you with a local chaplain who

is available to pray alongside

you and introduce you to likeminded

groups who can support

you in this aspect of your wellbeing.

For example, Broadview

Lifecare know their residents’

and employees’ spiritual needs

are very important to their

health and well-being, so are

fortunate to have a Pastor on the

activities team who is available

for residents and staff. They also

have strong community links

with a range of different religious

and spiritual groups, who

provide support for individuals

and come and provide group

services. Like many aged care

facilities, they recognise the

importance of residents being

able to live in a spiritually and

culturally safe environment.

Another avenue to try alongside

these strategies is working with

a Diversional and Recreational

Therapist. This type of

practitioner works with people

to design and facilitate leisure

and recreation programmes.

These activities are designed to

• Feeling hopeless or worthless

• Loss of motivation

• Feelings of guilt

• Pain including headaches,

abdominal and other pain

for which the doctor can find

no cause

• Thoughts of suicide

• Poor concentration,

forgetfulness, finding it hard

to make decisions

support, challenge and enhance a

person’s psychological, spiritual,

social, emotional and physical

wellbeing. The Diversional and

Recreation Therapist provides

opportunities for individuals

to choose to participate in

leisure and recreation activities

which promote self-esteem and

personal fulfilment. These types

of therapists are put into use at

Broadview - “Our Diversional

Therapists, as part of the

activities programme, organise

visits from entertainment groups.

This includes children, who the

residents love to see.”

Through your GP, retirement

village, or community support,

depression and mental health

issues can be worked through.

Don’t be afraid to reach out if

you, or someone you love finds

themselves in this category.

You’ll be surprised at the support

available and how quickly you

can begin to make inroads to a life

with more vitality and joy!

‘Fun’eral Planning

With A Quirk

Funeral planning can seem like a sombre

business, but approaching the task with a

quirky sense of fun and your own personal

interests in mind can make all the difference.

Suzi Brown explains

Let's cover what to check off

before you check out, how much

you might expect to pay, and

explore some ideas on how to

make your final farewell represent

you and what makes you tick!

Pre-organise

If you want to make the process

an easy one, you could consider

purchasing a book called “My

Will Wishes”, where people can

handwrite what they want to

happen after their death. My

Will Wishes aims to be one of the

most constructive, personalised

and cherished items you could

possibly prepare. Hard as it may

be to complete the book, it is one

of the most considerate things

you can do for those you love. The

book is filled with prompts to get

you thinking, then once you have

decided upon your wishes, start

entering these into your booklet.

Available from

www.mywillwishes.com at a

reasonable cost this handy little

tool could be a lifesaver for those

who you love and leave behind.

Casket choice

A good funeral service usually

crams a lifetime of what makes

you a unique human into a

short space of time, so between

eulogies from Great Aunty Joan

and a photo show, Ross Hall from

Dying Art has a suggestion: a

personalised casket! If you’re the

kind of person who has a peculiar

taste for cream buns or Lego, why

not go out in a coffin representing

that?! Ross has been creating

two to three customised coffins

a week for the last six to seven

years, his designs have included

a Formula One Ferrari race car; a

chocolate bar; and a fire engine

with working wheels. Then there

are caskets covered in photos of

the person's garden or overseas

travel adventures; holographs

or glitter - Ross says "It's endless

what you can do." Debra McClean

works for Dying Art as an advisor

and gives public talks at rest

homes - "I designed a casket for

a friend of our family and he was

a fisherman. He was cremated in

his fishing casket so you've got

an image in your head that he's

forever off fishing, and that's nice.

The casket is the very last thing

that you see of your loved one and

if it is just a brown box, you just

remember them in a coffin. It's

comforting to know they've gone

with their passion," she says.

Consider the environment

As we move forward some people

might also like to ‘go green’ as

they exit. You could consider

looking into some untraditional

eco-funeral options. These

can reduce your carbon

footprint while also leaving

behind a lasting benefit to the

environment. Some choices are:

‘Alkaline hydrolysis’ - also

known as water cremation.

AGED ADVISOR 33

It involves soaking the body

inside a special chamber until it

dissolves into liquid

‘Biodegradable urns’ - made of

fully recyclable materials it can

be filled with seeds which will

sprout into a tree when planted.

‘Organic ash mixtures’ -

mixing remains with organic

compounds that balance the

pH level and release friendly

microbial bacteria back into the

earth when scattered.

Individualise

Make a checkbox for what

flowers bloomed big in your

life - perhaps your husband

gave you a bunch of flowers that

you’ve never forgotten on your

first date? Or you just really like

the wild flowers that grow in the

dunes up the road. Include that

in your planning! Catering plays

a part too. Incase they haven’t

noticed by your cream bun coffin,

now’s your chance to remind

people who attend that you love

cream buns! Make sure there’s a

stack of them if that’s your jam.

Couldn’t go a day without a bottle

of Coke? Include a Coke fridge in

your planning so everyone can

toast you with a fresh bottle!

Those who want to be really

organised could pick out pics

that would be suitable for an

order of service sheet or photo

slide show together with music

that best represents you. Having

‘Sweet Caroline’ playing behind

a lifetime of photos of my

mother Caroline was such an

emotional and moving tribute

at her funeral. With the benefit

of advance knowledge that her

time was nearing an end, she

was able to choose the vicar who

she connected with most closely

from her church home, approve

the song choice, and on the topic

of music, she picked out her

favourite hymns to include in the

service too. Yes, we might have

had some ideas of what she likes,

but somehow having her choose

them made the funeral more

personal and meaningful.

Recording options

During the Covid lockdowns, it

became so much more important

to film and livestream a loved

one’s funeral for those unable to

attend. For my mother’s service

34

AGED ADVISOR

we used Liveview - liveview.co.nz

- and the overseas relatives and

friends were delighted. This has

the added benefit of being able to

download at a later date to watch

again once the busy-ness and

stress has passed.

Financially prepare

Whether you will be buried or

cremated can often come down

to cost. If you choose cremation

you’ll be saving on a headstone,

coffin, cemetery and grave fees,

and a burial plot. On the other

hand, with a cremation you’ll be

paying for the cremation fee and

urn or other location for ashes.

Either way, you’ll still need to

pay for the removal of the body,

funeral car hire, clergy fees,

flowers and catering alongside

the order of service sheet printing

and design.

The average cost of a very modest

funeral with a burial is around

$8400. Costs vary depending

on where you live and die. If you

live in New Plymouth, the cost

of being buried is $6552. At the

other end of the scale, it’s $1150

in Taupo and $2075 in the Far

North. So the average cost of

a funeral to about $10,000 but

that varies, depending on how

you and your family want to say

goodbye. There are a few options

for funding if the estate can’t

cover costs and neither can the

family. Work and Income have

a funeral grant which families

can apply for which is $2280.70.

ACC can help when someone

dies from an injury covered by

their organisation. They can

pay a grant of up to $7024.80 to

help with funeral costs, one-off

payments and loss of income.

If you don’t want to leave your

family in the lurch and you know

your estate won’t cover it, it’s

a good idea to take out funeral

insurance, which pays for all the

costs immediately upon death.

Or, you could take the fail free

option and simply save! Pop aside

$10 a week and start early enough

and you’ll be sorted with plenty

of time and without the stress

of knowing your family will be

scratching about for enough coin

to give you a decent send off.

Rest in peace

What’s left to do after you’ve

finished planning a fabulous

send-off party for yourself?

Simply choose a suitable outfit

and make sure someone knows

where you’ve written all this

important stuff! If you went

the way of the ‘My Well Wishes’

booklet this comes with a handy

little business card-sized card

where you can write your name

and where your Well Wishes book

is located.

Nutrition:

Making good food choices

We’ve been eating from the moment we were

brought into this world, it’s a pleasurable

activity that feeds not only our nutritional

needs but increases our happiness on an

emotional level and goes hand in hand with the

kind of activities we all enjoy.

Suzi Brown explains

What’s a movie without popcorn?

A wine and cheese evening

without cheese and yummy little

nibbles and canapes? We’re all

pretty well versed on food by the

time we hit retirement, so it may

seem a bit pointless to read up

on how, or what to eat once we’ve

had so much practice - somewhat

in the vein of preaching to

the converted! However, it’s

important to remember that as

our bodies change, so do our

requirements for the amount and

types of food we need to thrive.

You may now have a smaller

appetite than when you were

younger, so you need to make

more considered food choices to

get the best nutritional value.

36

Balanced eating

When we think of a balanced or

nutritional approach to eating,

it would be natural to bring to

mind the ‘healthy food pyramid’

we all learned about as part of

our schooling. This has more

recently been turned on its head

and rebranded to ‘Healthy heart

visual food guide’. This updated

guide advocates eating fruit and

vegetables most, followed by

some cereals and breads, then

meat, chicken, fish, legumes

and eggs, milk and dairy and

lastly oils and nuts. The Heart

Foundation is a good source of

information and guidance and

encourages fresh thinking like

swapping refined cereals and

grains for whole grains, or red

meats for plant proteins, choosing

reduced fat for dairy products and

focussing on reducing red meat to

three meals per week. The guide

also suggests it’s a good idea to

reduce highly processed and

refined foods such as takeaways,

sweet bakery items, processed

snack foods and sugary drinks.

You’ve been served

It’s about getting back to basics.

The Ministry of Health (MOH)

booklet “Eating for Healthy

Older People” recommends

eating at least seven servings of

vegetables and fruit each day,

this is broken down into at least

five servings of vegetables and

two servings of fruit.

Vegetables and fruit provide

carbohydrates (sugar and starch),

fibre, vitamins and minerals

and are low in fat. By choosing

produce that is in season you will

save dollars at the checkout, and

ensure you get the best fresh, ripe

varieties. Canned and frozen are

also healthy options. It doesn’t

need to be complicated to cook

- pop them in the microwave to

steam and go light on the butter!

Breads and Cereals provide

carbohydrates (sugar and starch),

fibre, and nutrients such as B

vitamins and minerals. These

come in second on the healthy

AGED ADVISOR

heart guide and include our goto

breakfast cereals and dinner

favourites like rice and pasta.

Wholegrain breads and cereals

are useful for providing extra

nutrients and fibre and also

help prevent constipation. It is

recommended that men need

five daily servings of breads and

cereals, with women needing

slightly less at three.

Legumes, nuts, seeds, fish and

other seafood, eggs, poultry (eg,

chicken), or red meat with the

fat removed all supply protein,

vitamins and minerals to your

diet. Red meat, chicken and fish

contain iron in a form that your

body can easily absorb. Oily fish

is also a good sources of omega-3,

which can help reduce the risk of

heart disease and stroke.

Milk and milk products provide a

good source of protein, vitamins,

calcium and other nutrients

to keep up muscle strength,

maintain healthy bones, and

prevent osteoporosis. You’ll need

to make the choice of whether

you need reduced-fat or full-fat

varieties depending on your

body type and energy needs. It’s

a good idea to have at least four

servings a day of milk products

which could come in the form of

yoghurt, cheese or a few scoops

of ice-cream.

Look to the stars

It seems a lot to take in, but there

are helpful ways to make it easier.

The Health Star Rating is a good

system to use when making

choices about packaged foods at

the supermarket. You could use

it to compare similar packaged

foods – it’s easy! The more stars a

food has, the healthier it is.

We need to drink at least 8 cups a

day to replace what we naturally

lose from the body. However,

this can be a problem if you’re on

medications that are a diuretic.

Stories of plastic milk bottles

under the car seat… need we

say more!

Aged Care nutrition

A good question to ask is how

aged care facilities encourage

good nutrition and provide

menu’s that support the healthy

heart visual food guide. A

handful of Retirement Villages

responded to our request to

answer how they provide for

those with special dietary

requirements, and what changes

they have implemented over the

years to meet those needs, like

including new products, engaging

consultants and resident

feedback:

At Broadview Lifecare they

provide their residents with

family hearty meals. Over the

last few years, they have formed

a partnership with Purefoods

to also provide innovative

nutritional meals for residents

with more specialised needs,

such as those with dementia

and enduring mental health

needs who require special meals

to ensure they get the right

nutrients. The menus are all

checked by a dietitian. They also

regularly conduct surveys with

residents, their whanau and

friends to seek valuable feedback

about the food they provide.

Over the last years at Summerset,

they've brought their food

services in-house to ensure the

quality, variety and consistency

of their food is standardised

across all villages. Their food

services team consult and

utilise meal plans approved by

nutritionists in the preparation

of the Care Centre menus. They

provide flexibility around dietary

requirements for example

providing high-quality pureed

meal options. Summerset

regularly seek feedback and

input into their food service

offering, which has led to

initiatives such as a range of

pre-prepared and ready-to-heat

frozen meals for convenience.

They also experienced a demand

for cooking lessons, particularly

from widowed residents who

were unsure how to cook or

struggling to adapt to cooking for

only one or two – this was partly

the inspiration for their Cooking

with a MasterChef series which is

available for residents.

Abbeyfield provide guidelines and

training to their housekeepers/

cooks so they provide nutritious

meals for residents and often

engage dieticians to deliver that

training.

Settlers offer vegan recipes,

dishes for vegetarians, and have

GF options in their café/meals.

At Rymans, there is a choice of

three main courses, including a

vegetarian option, they also cater

for special dietary requirements.

Their village chefs blend variety,

freshness and flair to create menu

options. The seasonal menu is

always evolving as residents

tell them what works, and what

could be better. They serve up

120 different meals each month,

so the same meal won't reappear

for four weeks - unless of course

it's back by popular demand.

They also offer individually

frozen meals - made from scratch

using fresh, natural ingredients.

The ready-to-eat meals are

reasonably priced and perfect

for independent or servicedapartment

residents looking for

convenience and great taste.

DIRECTORY

This year we are pleased to offer

you a directory containing the

top 200 village and care facilities

throughout Aotearoa. This list has

been compiled using the ratings

of almost 10,000 reviews on more

than 835 facilities. The following

directory also contains villages

and care facilities that have either

upgraded on www.agedadvisor.nz

or paid to be listed.

This is just one of a range of tools

that you can use to filter villages

and care homes as part of your

decision-making process. To

conserve space, we’ve limited this

list to only the top 200 facilities

with 5 or more reviews, or

facilities that are on an upgraded

plan with AgedAdvisor.

All other facilities can

be found online at:

www.agedadvisor.nz

We would suggest you check the

website for any updates. If you

still find no reviews, then feel free

to contact the facility directly and

ask why they have no reviews.

Each year we contact providers

and facilities in New Zealand to

encourage them to make review

forms available for their residents.

We provide these free of charge

and there is no cost to the facility

to send in reviews. Many residents

and facilities do send them in.

However, some facilities do not,

either because they do not see the

benefit of resident testimonials

or they do not want, or believe

that residents should voice their

thoughts or experience publicly.

We’ll let you be the judge of that.

You will notice some facilities have

their past awards listed. Only those

facilities on an upgraded plan have

past year awards displayed. Again,

you can see a full list of current and

past award winners online at:
