History of hemp
Hemp isn’t just a trend; it’s an ancient plant with a rich history
stretching back thousands of years. It comes from Cannabis
sativa, the botanical species name for two variations of the
same plant: hemp and marijuana.
Metaphorically, it’s comparable to the botanical species
Brassica oleracea, which includes broccoli, cabbage,
cauliflower, kale, and Brussels sprouts. We know these are
different, distinct vegetables with their own genetic makeup,
but they all come from the same species. In other words, hemp
is not marijuana any more than broccoli is cabbage.
The main difference between hemp and marijuana, as defined
by U.S. law, is the THC content. Industrial hemp plants can
only have 0.3 percent THC (the psychoactive cannabinoid) in
the entire crop, whereas marijuana can have up to 30 percent
THC in it. Hemp still touts many benefits, but without being
mind-altering.
Throughout history, there are many records of hemp and
marijuana being used all over the world. Around 8000 BC,
hemp became one of the first domesticated crops, used to
make ropes, baskets, fabrics, and industrial textiles, including
canvas for sailing. In ancient China and Europe, hemp seeds
and oil were consumed as food and used for medicine.
Historical records even suggest hemp oil was used in skin care
routines—a practice that modern science supports since hemp
oil is non-comedogenic, meaning it won’t clog pores.

By 2800 BC, marijuana tea was prescribed
for various maladies, and its use spread
throughout Egypt, India, Greece, China,
the Netherlands, and the Islamic world.
However, toward the end of the 19th
century, concerns about marijuana’s
psychoactive effects and addictiveness
led to legal restrictions in the United
States. Marijuana and hemp were
classified as controlled substances and
became illegal to grow, purchase, or use.
It wasn’t until the U.S. passed the 2018
Farm Bill that hemp—and its derivatives
with low THC levels—was legally
distinguished from marijuana and removed
from the federal controlled substance
list. This marked a new chapter for hemp,
sparking fresh interest in its benefits.
Before this resurgence, Gary Young
recognized hemp’s potential and asked
his friend Olivier Wenker, MD, to study it
and help Young Living produce it when it
became legal. Today, Gary’s vision has
become a reality. Our first hemp-based

WHY OUR
CBD is better
1. Our hemp products are formulated with full-spectrum
hemp, which means that we extract all the compounds
of the hemp plant to bring you the complete chemical
profile of the plant. While other growers use plant cuttings
to clone the same plant year after year, we grow from
unadulterated, organic seeds every season to produce the
highest quality hemp for maximum benefit and absorption
by your body.
2. Our CBD comes only from our farm-grown hemp. Other
companies use CBD from marijuana, which contains higher
levels of THC and has psychoactive effects. Extracting CBD
from hemp allows us to prevent any meaningful quantities
of THC in the final product.
3. Most growers genetically engineer their plants for maximum
extraction of CBD. Our hemp plants have over 150 biological
compounds, including cannabinoids and terpenes, that

in the cannabis plant. The body works better when it is in

Phytocannabinoids
AND YOUR BODY
Phytocannabinoids are natural chemical compounds found in the cannabis
plant, used for centuries for a variety of conditions. These compounds work
with your body’s endocannabinoid system, a complex network that helps

WHAT IS
population
hemp?
Population hemp is a term that is not
familiar to many people. It means we
grow hemp the natural way—from nongenetically
modified seeds. This method
embraces hemp’s natural diversity, resulting
in plants that vary slightly in aroma and
size, just as they would in the wild.
In contrast, most growers use genetically
engineered, feminized seeds to produce
uniform plants. These seeds are genetically
engineered to grow only female plants with
consistent shapes and sizes since female
plants have higher concentrations of THC.
However, this process alters normal seed
development and limits diversity.
Our approach is different.
We grow population hemp using regular
seeds, which are produced through natural
pollination between male and female
plants. This method preserves the plant’s
complete genetic profile, resulting in a
full-spectrum hemp oil rich in a variety
of beneficial compounds—just as Mother
Nature intended.

chlorophyll
Chlorophyll is the plant pigment that gives plants their green color. Its job in a
plant is to absorb sunlight during photosynthesis. Beyond its role in plant growth,

What we
TEST for
As soon as our hemp is extracted,
the oil is sent to the laboratory to
analyze its chemical profile and
test its purity. Even though we
know where our hemp is grown
and how it is harvested and
processed, we go the extra mile to
guarantee its quality before using
it in formulations.
Our hemp oil is third-party tested
for certain common heavy metals,
pesticides, solvents, and THC. To
