EUROPE SET TO
BECOME MAJOR FISHING
TOURISM MARKET
The fishing tackle market across
Europe could receive a major
boost if the continent can turn
itself into a major angling tourism
destination.
A key report, which has already been
picked up and championed by the European
trade association, suggests that the market
could benefit from a focus on some countries
becoming important destinations for anglers
from around the world.
Countries such as the UK, Italy, Germany,
The Netherlands, France, Spain and Sweden,
which offer diverse fishing opportunities,
could rival better known destinations on the
other side of the world.
Dutch governmental organisation The
Centre for the Promotion of Imports from
Developing Countries (CBI) has produced
two reports on market entry and market
potential for Europe, outlining important
sectors and disciplines not to mention areas
for growth and it says the support of national
angling associations alongside the European
Fishing Tackle Trade Association (EFTTA)
and the European Anglers’ Alliance (EAA)
will drive these opportunities further.
EFTTA’s lobbyist in Brussels, Jan
Kappel, said that a pan-European study on
recreational fishing– modelled along one
conducted in the USA – would help identify
more opportunities.
He said: “The EAA and EFTTA continue
to push for that study.
From next year the use of a fishing app will
be mandatory for recreational fishers catching
certain fish species. The data collected this
way can be seen as another stepping stone
towards the every-five-years pan-European
study wished for.”
IMPORTANT MARKET
The CBI reports said: “Fishing tourism
is a large niche that makes an important
contribution to local economies possessing
natural resources and a well-established
fishing infrastructure.

IS TOURISM THE
FISHING BOOST
EUROPE NEEDS?
So the Dutch government organisation,
The Centre for the Promotion of
Imports from Developing Countries
(CBI), has touted fishing tourism as a
fantastic way to grow the sport throughout
Europe.
It’s an interesting supposition and does,
on the face of it appear to stack up as a real
opportunity.
With 25 million recreational anglers
across the continent, it’s clear there is a strong
appetite for the sport from residents and we
know that here are some key fishing markets
here. For instance, the CBI believes that
recreational sea anglers alone spend €10.5
billion each year on fishing activities and
equipment.
Ally this to the fact that almost 14 per cent
of tour operators here are active in the fishing
tourism niche and it’s an enticing sector to try
and profit further from.
Research organisation Future Market
Insights valued the global fishing tourism
market in 2023 at around $72.5 billion
but, more significantly, it predicts it will be
worth $211.1 billion in less than a decade. It
sees huge opportunities among commercial
fishermen and the coastal towns where they
live. As their industry continues to decline,
so they could be encouraged to turn to the
recreational angling sector. The fishermen
already have boats and know the waters
while the towns can offer food and lodging
in convenient and often scenic areas with
additional local attractions.
This diversification is seen as crucial for
the potential growth of fishing tourism,
which will also benefit from the demand for
specialist trips for a single activity.
With many European countries being
hotbeds of angling for their existing
population and boasting fantastic coastlines,
clean rivers and streams or stunning lakes
filled with fish – and in many cases all of
these – such optimism feels justified.
Another reason to believe the hype is that
people are more understanding about the
environment. This has two prongs to it.
Firstly, since Covid-19, more people have
discovered the wonder of being outside,
enjoying relaxed pastimes, often with friends
and family. Many have also discovered how
many scenic rivers, lakes or coastlines are
more accessible than they probably imagined,
alongside the obvious physical and mental
health benefits of being outside.
At the same time, we have all seen a rise
in our understanding of sustainability and
environmentally friendly practices. I’m not
just talking about catch and release here, or
even tackle made from recycled fishing gear
or biodegradable packaging.
Ecotourism is the name of the game for
many and the desire to leave behind as little
carbon footprint as possible.
The advent of cheap air travel for the
masses encouraged anglers to head for farflung
shores on the other side of the globe, as
the world got smaller and we uncovered more
cool destinations.
Today, though, those plans are decried for
their impact on the environment – not to
mention the rising costs of travel – while we
are realising there are many amazing fishing
destinations on our doorstep.
The next decade could be very interesting
for the tackle trade in Europe.

Europe set to become major f ishing tourism market
• Continued from page 3
“There are 25 million recreational
anglers in Europe, which makes
it an important source market
for fishing tourism. Germany,
Italy and the UK are amongst the
leading markets. Sustainability is
a major trend in fishing tourism,
as anglers understand the need
to protect fish species and respect
their habitats.
“Fishing tourism comprises
travel away from home for the
primary purpose of fishing,
either in freshwater or saltwater.
It involves individuals or groups
travelling to destinations for the
purpose of fishing for leisure or
sport.
“These destinations include
freshwater (lakes, ponds, reservoirs,
rivers and streams) and saltwater
environments (oceans and seas)
that are home to plenty of fish
species.
“Tourism entrepreneurs can
further specialise, depending on
the type of fishing that is offered.
Angling covers various fishing
techniques, and there is a crossover
between definitions.”
It added: “Fishing tourism often
includes other features beyond
fishing activities: accommodations
in lodges or resorts, guided
expeditions, boat rentals and ecotours
focusing on the local aquatic
environment and wildlife.
“Fishing tourism contributes
significantly to local economies,
especially in regions with
abundant natural resources
and well-developed fishing
infrastructure. In addition, fishing
tourism can promote conservation
efforts by fostering an appreciation
for natural habitats and
encouraging sustainable fishing
practices.”
The report says that a major
driver of the potential growth is
consumer demand to spend more
time in nature, a trend which really
took off during the Covid-19
pandemic.
It revealed: “Fishing in peaceful,
tranquil places is a calming activity
and is known to help reduce stress.
Fishing in more challenging
situations, like deep-sea fishing, is
exhilarating and exciting.
“This trend is also leading to a
demand for greater personalisation
and customisation of trips, and
for specialised experiences. The
range is large, which provides
great opportunities for local tour
operators.
“Private fishing charters,
personalised guiding services and
tailor-made itineraries based on
fishing goals are being sought
after. They can also be personalised
to cater for different skills
levels, which is good to attract
newcomers to the sport as well as
non-fishing companions.
This trend matches the need
of anglers looking for fishing
experiences in exotic and remote
destinations to catch species they
may never have caught before.
These destinations are usually
off the beaten track and out in
spectacular nature.”
Maggi Smit, founder of
destination angling company Go
Fishing Worldwide, said: “Before
Covid-19, fishing tourists would
regularly travel on their own or
in small groups. However, due to
the growing cost of travel, we are
seeing more guests wanting to
travel as part of group tours and
sharing guides. Recently there
has been a growth in interest in
salmon and sea trout fishing.”

MEGA GROWTH
PLAN FOR JAPANESE
TACKLE BRAND
Japan-headquartered premium
fishing gear manufacturer
Megabass is set to capitalise on
bass tackle market growth by
expanding thanks to a partnership
with global consumer-focused
investment firm L Catterton.
The deal will leverage L
Catterton’s operating capabilities
and industry network on the back
of rising demand for its products.
Consumer expenditure on
fishing gear in Japan and the US,
Megabass’ two largest markets,
has been rising and is expected to
continue growing as casual anglers
look to become more proficient
and seek high-quality products.
This trend is providing huge
opportunities for Megabass, given
its suite of high-end fishing lures,
baits and rods which can be used
across rivers, lakes and seas.
Founded in 1986 by acclaimed
bass angler Yuki Ito, Megabass
harnesses traditional craftsmanship
and cutting-edge technology to
manufacture its products.
The company has been able to
cultivate a loyal following among
the angling community, first in
Japan and now also internationally,
especially in the US.
It entered the latter market
in the 2000s and has since been
endorsed by renowned American
anglers.
Bearing testament to the
rising and sustained demand
for Megabass’ products, its
total revenue has demonstrated
strong growth over the years,
with contributions from overseas
markets also increasing, while
sales are generated via retailers
and e-commerce channels such
as its websites and Amazon, with
demand outstripping supply.
Megabass and L Catterton
will work closely together to drive
further growth for the brand
as consumers focus spend on
premium fishing gear in its key
markets.
Their combined focus will
initially be on thoughtfully
ramping up Megabass’ production
capacity and strategically
expanding its distribution network
by leveraging L Catterton’s
category expertise.

TRIBUTES PAID TO FRENCH
INDUSTRY VISIONARY
Hubert Guillois, credited with
helping shape the French fishing
tackle market in the 1970s and
1980s, has passed away aged 84,
leaving a legacy defined by passion,
innovation, and dedication to the
angling community.
Born on March 18th, 1940
in Mauron, Hubert passed away
on January 14th in Cartagena
de los Indias in Colombia but
will be remembered for his
role in building a major tackle
firm, Ragot Mouche, and his
legacy looks set to live on in the
FreeSpirit initiative.
After achieving an honourable
2nd place at L’École Hôtelière
de Paris, Hubert embarked on a
remarkable three-year tenure at
the Pentagon, although much of it
remains a secret – before travelling
the world, escaping both the
Vietcong army and a man-eating
tribe in Papua New Guinea,
among others.
Briefly returning to France,
Hubert married his sweetheart,
Dominique, before setting off
once more to explore the world
– this time applying his hotel
management expertise in Africa
and Argentina.
When his father-in-law, André,
asked for help managing the
company he had founded, Hubert
immediately returned to France.
Being an avid angler himself,
it was a perfect fit for Ragot
Mouche – a small but highly
esteemed fishing tackle business.
In no time, Hubert transformed
Ragot Mouche from a primarily
fly-fishing and fresh water
company into a major import/
export enterprise. He introduced
numerous prestigious brands to
the French market, including
Toray unveils plans for production site
Toray Industries, the producer
of materials for fishing tackle
including rods and lines, has
revealed plans for a highperformance
resin compound
production site for its Toray
Plastics (China) company.
The new facility at the premises
of manufacturing subsidiary
Toray Resins (Foshan) Co
in Guangdong Province will
inaugurate operations in April
2025.
As a result, Toray is also
considering a partial production
Rapala, Cortland, Plano and
Shimano while also becoming a
renowned manufacturer.
Among his creations was the
iconic Raglou in 1971 and he
went on to develop many more
alongside Victor Borlandelli,
Ange Porteux, Jean-Marc
Lanchier, and many others.
After selling the company
to Rapala in 1991, Hubert and
Dominique set sail, embarking on
new adventures, many of which
were contained in his recently
published memoirs.
Sharing his vast knowledge
on a wide array of topics was not
only one of his greatest passions
but could also be described as a
deep-seated need, especially when
it came to passing it on to younger
generations.
To honour his memory, the
family invites you to take your
transfer from Toray Plastics
(Shenzhen) to the new production
site.
Although its economy is
recovering slowly, China offers
considerable market potential,
with a projected annual growth
rate of around five per cent. Its
key automotive industry is the
world’s largest and is still expecting
continuous growth.
The Chinese government
is supporting the adoption of
new energy vehicles, which
should boost demand for highperformance
resins, particularly for
automotive applications.
Increasingly tight
environmental regulations are
accelerating demand expansion
for these vehicles, creating
more sophisticated customer
requirements, and thus lifting
demands for high-performance
materials, an area in which Toray
has its strength.
The new facility aims to stabilise
supplies of high-performance
resins in response to these market
trends. Toray aims to capture
loved ones, especially the younger
ones, on a fishing/crabbing trip
and combine it with a litterpicking
activity. Share those
precious moments using the
hashtag #HubertGuilloisLegacy,
so the family can see and respond.
Honouring Hubert’s passion
for the environment, the future of
angling, well-being on or around
the water and youth, his family
have asked people to consider
donating to the FreeSpirit
initiative, which he helped to
conceive.
FreeSpirit initiative is a boat
being built specially to enable
people of all ages and abilities
to enjoy the well-being benefits
of the ocean and recreational
activities like fishing, while
engaging in sustainable practices.
The boat will be based in The
Solent, UK along the south coast,
directed by his eldest daughter
Marianne and son-in-law Ross,
lovingly supported by family from
Belgium to Colombia.

rising demand for these resins in
southern China and expand its
business in the Chinese market by
focusing on new energy vehicle
applications, while addressing
anticipated growth in other
sectors.
The new site will not only serve
growing demand within China
but also function as a strategic
hub for global operations, with a
particular focus on Southeast Asia.
The company will continue to
enhance its overseas network and
step up organic collaboration to
expand its businesses worldwide.

about.”
A highly skilled angler and
founding member of CCA
California, Dave has helped
lead the non-profit volunteer
organisation since its inception by
serving as vice chair on its state
board of directors, among other

his career accelerated, so has his
volunteerism in support of the
sport fishing community.
He has also served for 25 years
on the American Sportfishing
Association board of directors,
including as both chair and vice
chair.
He said: “I began my fishing
career on the West Coast, and so
I will always stay connected to the
ocean waters off of California.
“With so many issues
threatening the sport fishing
community in California, we all
need to work hard to conserve
marine resources and protect
ocean angling access.
“I am proud to do my part, and
I am honoured and humbled to

FEATURE
ICAST
AT ICAST, THE FIRST TIME
IS THE CHARM
One week in Florida – at the giant industry trade show, ICAST – was enough
to put a brand new fishing product on the sportfishing industry’s map.
Alex Rodriguez plants his feet
on the grassy shoreline of a
Florida pond on a balmy Tuesday
morning. Steps from the doors of
Orlando’s Orange County Convention Center,
Rodriguez grips the controller of a whirring,
green drone and surveys his surroundings.
Below him, a dock buzzes with the clamour
of ICAST attendees hopping into kayaks
and boarding a demonstration boat. A giant,
inflatable duck bobs to the rhythm of a breeze
wafting through the Central Florida sky.
On the shore, dozens of ICAST exhibitors
exchange greetings and hand out product
samples to a throng of early bird trade attendees
on hand for ICAST On the Water Demo Day.
A few take advantage of popsicles and beverage
stands scattered around the makeshift tailgate.
ON THE WATER
Since 2015, ICAST On the Water Demo
Day has brought a piece of the world’s largest
sportfishing trade show from the indoors to
the outdoors, where exhibitors like Rodriguez
can showcase products in the field. For nearly
a decade, the event has expanded into one of
ICAST’s most well-known attractions, serving
as a launchpad for innovative new rods, reels,
sunglasses and marine electronics.
It was at ICAST On the Water Demo Day
that the world began to see the first glimpses of
generational products like live, forward facing
sonar. But, until now, nobody has attempted
to showcase a product capable of doing what
Rodriguez’s drone – the XPece One – can do.
As he pilots around a bay boat showcasing
brand new marine electronics, Rodriguez
points the drone down towards the pond. In
a split-second, its four whizzing blades careen
straight towards the water and crash. The drone
plunges into the pond, startling a group of bank
anglers. Then, the XPece One does something
unexpected. Its propellers fling water droplets
from their tips and the drone takes flight again.
“It’s a fishing drone,” Rodriguez explains
from his booth on the show floor the following
day. Designed to be submerged in saltwater
and remain airworthy for the length of its life,
the XPece One can fly, float and even transmit
underwater imagery in real-time to its user.
FLYING HIGH
Rodriguez, the managing director of Urban
Drones, came to ICAST to show his creation
to the world. As a video of his fishing drone
repeats in the background, Rodriguez explains
his reason for attending the world’s largest
sportfishing trade show.
“This is our first year at ICAST, and I didn’t
know what to expect. But I can already tell you
that I am going to be at ICAST every year for
the foreseeable future because, even in the first
few hours, I can see it paying off.”
As the week progresses, the XPece One rises
from an unknown hobby drone into a fullfledged
fishing industry star.
On Wednesday night, the drone takes
home an ICAST Best of Category Award in
electronics, joining an elite list of 41 winners
whittled down from nearly 1,000 entries.
By Thursday afternoon, Rodriguez is
competing alongside the biggest, most storied
brands in fishing for the show’s Overall Best of
Show Award. And, while he ultimately falls just
short of the show’s overall award, Rodriguez
leaves ICAST with a laundry list of accolades
and a long list of industry connections to help
put his product in the hands of customers.
“These are our people,” he says. “Everyone
here understands it.”
JOIN THE CROWD
This year, ICAST 2025 is set to return to the
Orange County Convention Center, from July
15th to 18th. Rodriguez will be there… and so
too will hundreds of other entrepreneurs with
thousands of new products ready to make their
own way to markets across the globe.
Attendee and exhibitor registration for
ICAST 2025 are both now open and, with easy
access to more than 160 international routes at
Orlando International Airport, getting there is
a breeze
Last year, representatives from 75 nations
joined more than 14,000 attendees on the show
floor, and you can join them this year.

EXCITEMENT GROWS FOR
POLISH FISHING EVENT
Preparations are almost finished for one of the largest fishing events in
Europe, the giant Rybomania, which takes place in Poland in early March.
RYBOMANIA
The biggest and best-known tackle
manufacturers, distributors and
retailers will gather at the MTP
Poznań Expo, Poland between
March 7th and 9th to showcase everything
from tackle, lures, accessories, clothing, tents,
beds, seats, boats and pontoons.
Whatever your interest, there will be plenty
to choose from, for professionals and hobbyists
alike, covering key disciplines such as carp,
catfish fishing, method feeder or spinning.
There is even an expanded fly fishing section.
Last year the angling community flocked to
Poznan, with 31,748 people making the trip
from more than 20 countries, delivering the
largest event of its kind in Europe.
The upcoming edition will again be a
venue for angling in every sense of the word:
business relations, friendships, meetings with
celebrities, but also those first ‘encounters with
a fishing rod’ for complete novices and the
youngest participants.
Rybomania project manager Miłosz
Jankowiak said: “It never gets boring –
watching passionate visitors with a twinkle in
their eye as they make their way through the
pavilions, high-fives at every turn, laughter and
enthusiastic voices. Each edition is seemingly
the same event, but each time it evokes a very
fresh, strong impression.”
The event is based around the presence of
the most important brands and angling shops,
covering tens of thousands of square metres of
exhibition space.
Complementing the manufacturers,
distributors and retailers will, as always,
be offerings from fisheries, craftsmen and
companies in the fishing tourism and
equipment sectors.
One key attraction will be the giant
aquarium. The almost 20,000 litre tank will
be filled with specimens of various Polish
fish, with experts ‘testing’ the latest gear
and showcasing their skills in front of the
audience.
The programme includes a lecture stage
with presentations by the recognised experts
in various fields, as well as another edition of
the Young Angler’s Academy addressed to
children and aimed at igniting their passion
for angling while respecting the natural
environment.
Building on success
Last year, alongside the latest rods and reels,
lures and fishfinders was the Polish premiere
of an innovative bait boat not to mention
beds, tents and clothing, new electric and
combustion engines.
Rybomania 2024 even featured a unique
curiosity – a boat created by the Viking
company especially for the people
with disabilities.
More than 250 exhibitors from 12 countries
presented their offerings. On the main stage,
celebrities and angling experts shared their
experiences and knowledge.
Speakers included: Jakub Vagner, Ross
Honey, Kamil Walicki, Radosław Witólski,
Robert Adamski, Piotr Boufal, Rafał
Mleczak, Tomasz Lewandowski, plus Monika
and Łukasz Lechowscy – the winners
of prestigious competitions, including
Stairs2Hell and Polish Carp Masters 2023 –
also met with the audience.
In addition, on the first day, a conference
was held scientists from the University
of Warmia and Mazury. While another
attraction was the auction of a jubilee
catamaran made on behalf of the MEUS
company on the occasion of the 25th
anniversary of the World Carp Classic
competition.

RODS
Arguably the mainstay of fishing tackle, a rod is an essential tool for any angler, serving
the dual purpose of casting your bait or fly as well as taming the fish you have hooked.
As materials get stronger and lighter and technology continues to advance,
what does the rod market mean for you?
Whether you are casting a
lure to a likely looking
spot, flicking a fly under an
overhanging tree, lowering a
bait to the ocean depths or trying to reach the
far bank for that elusive monster, a fishing rod is
a vital part of an angler’s armoury.
Where once it was a simple stick or piece
of bamboo to gently dangle your chosen bait
in front of unsuspecting fish, today there are
almost as many rod permutations as species of
fish.
While rods have been around for thousands
of years, it was only about 300 years ago that
demand began to grow for tools that were
stronger, lighter or more flexible.
By the 19th century materials such as steel,
bamboo and cane were prominent while
the middle of the 20th century saw further
innovations in rod design, with fibreglass
becoming the favoured material thanks to its
durability and cost.
As the century progressed, however, graphite
and carbon fibre started being used, offering
lighter rods with better performance and
strength.
Today, a mix of the latest materials for blank
construction, line guide spacings, handles, tips,
lengths, actions and other variables mean that
anglers can find the ideal rod for each job.
As a result, the global fishing rod market
has enjoyed significant growth, with generic
rods being replaced with items that serve a
very specific purpose, while the burgeoning
carp fishing sector has encouraged multiple
purchases of the same product.
The rod market
In 2023, the global fishing rod market was
valued at approximately $1.8 billion and is
projected to grow at a compound annual growth
rate (CAGR) of 4.5 per cent from 2023 to 2030.
16 WWW.TACKLETRADEWORLD.COM
RODS
This is driven by a number of factors such as
the increasing popularity of recreational fishing,
expanding disposable incomes in emerging
economies and innovations in fishing rod
materials and designs.
Recreational fishing has become a popular
pastime for millions around the world. Territories
like the United States,, Europe and Australia
have well-established fishing communities, while
developing economies in Asia and Africa are
witnessing a surge in fishing-related activities.
Fishing tournaments, local angling clubs and
online fishing communities contribute to the
growing interest in the sport.
The market has always benefited from
advancements in materials and design. Modern
fishing rods are often made from lightweight
yet durable materials such as carbon fibre while
incorporating on smart technologies, such as
sensors and tracking systems, is creating a new
segment of high-tech gear aimed at tech-savvy
anglers.
Countless choices
With so many styles of fishing, species to target
and venues or conditions an angler may face, it’s
no surprise that rods can come in all lengths
and strengths.
From tiny 2ft rods for ice fishing up to 12ft
or 13ft for carp fishing, 14ft for European
match fishing and even telescopic Bolognese
rods up to 23ft (7 metres), there is a wide
diversity available.
In general, though, you will likely come
across a few main types – spinning rods
of many lengths for bait and lure fishing,
baitcasting rods for heavier lures, fly fishing
rods, which are typically more flexible with
their action helping impart power to the cast
and ice fishing rods which, as mentioned, are
generally much shorter.
Longer rods will typically allow longer
accurate casts and are designed for larger bodies
of water while shorter rods offer better control
in tight spaces or where you need to impart
some movement to your bait or lure.
One important part of any rod’s makeup
is its action, which controls its power or
sensitivity, often helping in both casting and
playing fish.
Fast action rods typically bend mostly at the
tip, offering sensitivity and quick hook-setting
ability. Generally, these are good for beginners
as they are fairly versatile and forgiving.
Medium action rods are a decent allrounder,
with a good bend in the middle
section, offering a balance between power and
flexibility. They are a good choice for larger fish
or longer casts.
A rod with a slower action tends to bend
through the entire rod length, making it more
flexible. These are good for smaller fish and
smaller lures with light lines.
You’ll also comes across power ratings on
many rods and these are fairly self-explanatory.
Material decisions
Today, most rods are manufactured from
carbon fibre and composite materials, ensuring
light weight combined with strength but some
anglers still prefer fibreglass models, which are
cheap, strong and tough, albeit heavier.
At the other end of the price scale, you’ll find
a small selection of rods made from cane and
reed, marketed at purists and those yearning
for the ‘old-fashioned feel‘. These are especially
popular with fly anglers.
One more variable to add to the mix is the
choice of line guides – their quality, quantity,
weight and positioning can be almost as
important as the blank.
Meanwhile, a good handle will complete
the rod and these can be made from materials
such as high-grade cork on fly and more purist
rods to part-EVA grips on coarse fishing rods,
abbreviated Japanese shrink handles on carp
rods and golf-club style wraps on spin and
baitcasting rods.
Of course, budget comes into play in many
instances just as much as the actual fishing
requirements.
While there is no harm in stocking a couple
of expensive flagship models for the discerning
angler, in reality most sales will come from the
middle ground products that offer a balance
of quality and price, not to mention the lower
end of the market for beginners and those on a
tight budget.

FISHBITES HAS BEEN
CATCHING FOR 25 YEARS…
AND COUNTING
For a quarter of a century, Carr Specialty Baits has been revolutionising the fishing industry
with its game-changing brand of baits – Fishbites and Fishbites Flight Club Lures.
20 WWW.TACKLETRADEWORLD.COM
FISHBITES
Fishbites is celebrating 25 years of the
original Flavor/Scent bait technology
and helping families around the world
make memories through fishing.
Over the years, the baits have evolved but
the science remains. The decades of research
completed by Dr William Carr, world-renowned
marine biologist and inventor of Fishbites, is what
sets this line-up of baits apart from everything else
on the market.
The science behind Fishbites
By using a concentrated formula that replicates
the natural chemicals that fish use to detect and
track their prey, Fishbites have become the go-to
synthetic alternative to natural bait.
Each bait is heavily infused with a mixture
called Fishbites Flavor/Scent technology. The
scent replicates feeding stimulants found in prey
animals that trigger feeding behaviours in fish.
The flavour replicates the taste fish are expecting
when they strike.
The result is a very aggressive bite, giving
anglers a better chance to ‘set the hook!’ It’s the
bait that stays on the hook longer, lasts longer and
has the scent technology that releases in the water
(not on your hands).
As the bait gradually dissolves, Fishbites and
Fishbites Fight Club Lures release a trail of
powerful feeding stimulants that fish cannot resist.
The baits were also created with the environment
in mind; there are no plastics in any of the baits
and many of the products are biodegradable.
Work in progress
Fishbites is a family-owned and operated small
business in St Augustine, Florida, USA and it
all started during a conversation at Thanksgiving
with open minds, a leading scientist in chemoreception
and a family determined to bring
something truly remarkable to the fishing
industry.
On that day, over 25 years ago, Fishbites was
born and the scented bait market would never be
the same!
Today, the full line-up of Fishbites includes:
E-Z Baits, Fish’n Strips, Bag O’ Worms, E-Z Pro,
Catfish Baits, and Fishbites Fight Club Lures.
But they didn’t stop there…
The Bag O’ Worms Bloodworm Fishbites was one of
the original baits and is still among the top-sellers
around the world today.
Fishbites also offers a variety of terminal
tackle such as hooks, popping corks, surf rigs,
and jig heads plus a custom series of fishing rods
and apparel. So, no matter where you are fishing
or what you are fishing for, Fishbites has a bait
for that. And, just in time for the New Year, the
company is also releasing new baits and scents.
On the launch pad
First up, Fishbites Fight Club Lures are
designed to bring the fight to you and now
there is a 5in Mullet ready to reel in your next
personal best catch.
This larger profile soft lure was made with
big fish in mind and is packed with Fishbites
Flavor/Scent Technology. Also new to the Fight
Club line-up are additional colours in its Dirty
Boxer Curly Tails: the Pink Shiner and the
Bruiser. These baits are already putting great fish
in the boat.
Also new for 2025, Fishbites has released a
mullet scent in the E-Z Baits and E-Z Pro lineup.
Both are made with the ‘Longer Lasting’
formula which provides extra durability for
extended periods of time. These baits feature a
cloth binder in the middle of the bait that keeps
it on the hook despite the efforts of notoriously
toothy bait stealers and are designed to crush
fish both inshore and offshore.
And last, but certainly not least, it has created
a new Catfish bait and added the very popular
Blood colour.
These Catfish Baits have all the advantages of
natural bait – and then some! It’s the stink bait
that doesn’t stink. (Well, at least not to humans!)
Anglers cannot smell it but, trust us, there’s a
powerful punch of STINK.
Fishbites Catfish Baits are heavily infused
with the proven Flavour/Scent technology that
creates a scent trail that catfish can’t resist.
Terry Dillinger, president and CEO of
Fishbites, said: “We couldn’t be more excited to
celebrate our 25th anniversary. Throughout that
time, we’ve worked hard to consistently deliver
quality products that catch fish.
“Although the product line-up has evolved,
one thing remains the same: our commitment to
exceed expectations. And we’ve built an amazing
team to deliver on that promise. Looking ahead
to the future, we’re thrilled to keep making
great products that help anglers make great
memories.”
Putting something back
In addition to putting a high value on the
quality of its products, Fishbites also believes in
taking care of its customers and community. It
understands the importance of giving back and
making an impact on the communities they
serve, whether through tournaments, seminars,
kids’ camps, charity events and more.
Because of its great products and excellent
customer service, the Fishbites ‘nation’ continues
to grow around the world.
With more anglers picking up Fishbites as
their confidence baits, these groundbreaking
baits have now caught over 175 species
worldwide… and the list keeps growing.

FLY FISHING
CASTING FOR SUCCESS IN
THE FLY TACKLE TRADE
Fly fishing, a centuries-old sport, has evolved into a global industry blending recreation,
artistry, and conservation. Unlike traditional angling, fly fishing uses artificial flies to mimic
aquatic insects, drawing enthusiasts worldwide.
North America leads the market,
with iconic places like Montana
(for trout) and the Florida Keys
(for saltwater species) attracting
anglers. Europe, particularly the UK and
Scandinavia, boasts deep-rooted traditions,
while Asia’s Tenkara technique is influencing
Western styles.
Emerging destinations in South America,
Africa, and Oceania offer unique opportunities
for adventurous anglers.
Key trends
Sustainability is transforming the industry.
Anglers increasingly prioritise eco-friendly gear
and catch-and-release fishing to protect aquatic
ecosystems. Conservation groups like Trout
Unlimited and the Bonefish and Tarpon Trust
in the USA advocate for policies safeguarding
waterways.
Technological innovation is also shaping
the market. Carbon fibre rods enhance
performance, high-tech fly lines improve
buoyancy and GPS tools help anglers locate
ideal fishing spots.
Inclusivity is on the rise, with organisations
like United Women on the Fly fostering
diversity in the sport. Meanwhile, fly fishing
tourism flourishes, with luxury lodges in
destinations like Patagonia and Iceland catering
to high-end travellers, while budget options
attract younger participants. Urban fly fishing is
also growing in cities like Denver and Tokyo.
Challenges
Climate change threatens aquatic ecosystems,
with rising temperatures and habitat loss
impacting cold-water species like trout and
salmon. Access to fishing spots remains a
contentious issue, particularly regarding public
versus private land rights in the US and
Europe.
Cost is another barrier, as high-quality gear
and guided trips can be expensive, limiting
participation. Efforts to make the sport more
affordable and inclusive are crucial for growth.
Growth opportunities
Fly fishing is uniquely positioned for
conservation leadership. Anglers’ firsthand
connection to nature makes them passionate
advocates for environmental protection,
fostering partnerships between industry players
and conservation groups.
E-commerce and digital engagement have
surged post-pandemic, providing new ways
to reach customers. Growing middle-class
markets in China, Brazil and South Africa
present expansion opportunities, particularly
through eco-tourism initiatives.
Innovation in gear, such as smart rods and
augmented reality training tools, can attract
new audiences. Youth engagement through
schools, social media and gamification is also
key to sustaining the industry’s future.
Looking ahead
Fly fishing stands at a crossroads, balancing
tradition with modernity. While climate
change and economic barriers pose challenges,
the sport’s deep connection to nature offers a
powerful narrative.
By embracing sustainability, inclusivity, and
technological advancements, the industry can
continue to thrive, ensuring that fly fishing
remains a cherished pastime – not to mention
a source of revenue for businesses – for
generations to come.

In terms of regulations, it’s
wise to check with the California
Department of Fish and Wildlife
(CDFW), which has strict
regulations for both salt- and
freshwater fishing.
Most importantly, anyone aged
16 or older must have a valid
fishing licence, unless you are
fishing from a public pier in the

Fishing Days available but anyone
availing themselves of these will
still need to buy appropriate report
cards for the species they are
targeting.
There are seasons in place for
some species as well as rules on
methods, baits and more so it’s
wise for anglers to check all the
information before they go.
Key regulations
California’s fishing tackle market
is heavily influenced by a number
of other issues, including health,
environmental and sustainability
concerns.
In common with many other
places, strict quotas and licensing
requirements are enforced by the
CDFW to prevent overfishing
and protect native fish populations.
26 WWW.TACKLETRADEWORLD.COM
CALIFORNIA
Seasonal closures for certain
species, such as salmon and
sturgeon, can also directly impact
tackle sales.
California has been proactive in
promoting non-toxic alternatives
to traditional lead-based sinkers
and jigs to protect aquatic
ecosystems.
At the same time
manufacturers are increasingly
adopting sustainable practices,
using biodegradable materials for
lures and eco-friendly packaging.
Some of this has also been
driven by what is known as
Proposition 65, which requires
businesses to provide a “clear
and reasonable” warning to
consumers before exposing them
to chemicals known to the state
to cause cancer or reproductive
harm, unless the business can
demonstrate that the exposure is
below certain thresholds.
Because the warning
requirement is unclear, the
California Office of Health
Hazard Assessment (OEHHA)
has issued regulations providing
a “safe harbor” warning – if a
business complies with these
regulations, its warnings are
deemed “clear and reasonable” and
cannot be challenged in court.
From a fishing point of view,
around 16 per cent of California’s
coastal waters are designated as
Marine Protected Areas, which
restrict fishing activities in these
zones.
While this limits fishing
opportunities in some areas, it
also fosters sustainable fishing
practices, encouraging innovation
in tackle design.
Key challenges
Despite its robust growth, the
Californian tackle market, in
common with many others, faces
several challenges. The rising cost
of fishing licenses and tackle can
deter casual anglers while inflation
and supply chain disruptions
have led to higher prices for
raw materials, affecting product
affordability.
California is one of the most
popular areas for a number of
outdoor activities and some of
these – for example kayaking,
paddleboarding and hiking –
certainly can compete against
recreational fishing.
There are other environmental
impacts too. Climate change
affects water temperatures and
fish habitats, altering fishing
patterns and tackle requirements.
Drought conditions in California
can reduce water levels in lakes
and rivers, limiting freshwater
fishing opportunities and the
recent wildfires have proved
extremely disruptive to individuals
and businesses alike.
Looking ahead
Nevertheless, the tackle market in
California seems poised for steady
growth, driven by innovation, an
expanding customer base and a
focus on sustainability.
Smart fishing gear with
advanced tracking and data
analysis capabilities is expected
to revolutionise the market
while efforts by the CDFW,
the American Sportfishing
Association, Recreational Boat
and Fishing Foundation and nonprofit
organisations to promote
fishing as a family friendly activity
are likely to boost demand for
entry-level tackle.
It is also worth noting that
California’s status as a trendsetter
in outdoor recreation ensures that
innovations developed here will
likely influence the broader
global market.

production is transforming from "Made in China" to "Created in China".
With the rapid growth of the leisure fishery industry, more and more beginners and experiencers are participating
in fishing activities, and many young people who mainly experience the fun of fishing have become the main
consumer force. The purchasing group of fishing tackle has also shifted from the original middle-aged and elderly
male group to the younger group, and the female
purchasing group has also increased. For this
reason, in addition to considering the performance
of fishing tackle, the appearance and color of fishing
tackle manufacturers in product design have also
become a hot spot for young people.
Although the overall prospects of the industry
have been steadily improving, there are also some
difficulties in the development process. First,
foreign trade exports have been reduced due to the
impact of the international economic environment;
second, the fishing tackle industry in other regions
has risen, and the competition among domestic
fishing tackle companies has intensified; third, since
there is a certain period from design to investment
and publicity for independent innovation products,
the proportion of independent production by
enterprises is still relatively small.
In 2023, the output value of the national leisure
fishery will be 93.147 billion yuan, with an overall
upward trend. At present, the change of fishing
population has led to the change of fishing habits.
The standardized management of fishing is of great
significance to the protection of aquatic biological
resources and ecological environment. Next, the
research team will form a data analysis report based
on the research results and make recommendations
to the relevant management departments.
COMPARISON BETWEEN CHINA AND JAPAN'S FISHING
TACKLE EXHIBITIONS
After years of development, China and Japan's fishing tackle exhibitions
have obvious differences. Take the Yokohama Fishing Festival (formerly
Yokohama Fishing Tackle Exhibition) in Japan as an example. It will be
held at the Yokohama Pacifico Convention Center, the Yokohama Minato
Mirai International Conference Center, from January 17 to 19, 2025
for three days. The highlight of this year is the "Fishing Festival Shrine",
whose symbol is the blue torii that appears for the first time. Under the
blessing of Yokohama's guardian god, Ise Sanko Daijingu, visitors can
pray for a good harvest of fish throughout the year and safe sea voyages,
and can also purchase original blessing plaques and fortunes. During the
exhibition, 228 companies participated in the exhibition, the most in the
history of the fishing festival. Many talk shows and demonstrations by
famous professional anglers were held at the booths of various exhibitors,
and beautiful fishing idols and field testers popular on social media also
appeared at each booth, attracting a large number of visitors.
In contrast, the China Fishing Tackle Exhibition is also unique in scale
and form. The China Fishing Tackle Exhibition is usually held in major
cities such as Tianjin, Beijing, and Suzhou. The exhibition is large in scale
and has a large number of exhibitors, covering multiple fields such as
fishing tackle, fishing gear, and outdoor products. During the exhibition,
major brands displayed their latest products and technologies, attracting
a large number of professional visitors and fishing enthusiasts. For the
China Fishing Tackle Exhibition, more attention is paid to sales, hoping to
achieve sales and wholesale on site.
1. Scale and exhibitors:
This year, a total of 228 companies
participated in the Yokohama
Fishing Festival in Japan, while
the number of exhibitors at the
China Fishing Tackle Exhibition
usually reached more than a
thousand, and the exhibition area
was larger.
2. Activities and interactive
experience:
The Yokohama Fishing Festival
in Japan focuses on cultural
experience, such as fishing festival
shrines and blessing activities,
while the China Fishing Tackle
Exhibition focuses more on sales.
3. Audience attraction:
The Yokohama Fishing Festival
in Japan attracted a large number
of beautiful fishing idols and field
testers on social media, increasing
the audience's participation and
interactivity. The China Fishing
Tackle Exhibition attracted
more professional visitors and
fishing enthusiasts, focusing on
displaying the latest products and
technologies.
In general, the Yokohama Fishing Festival in Japan and the China Fishing
Tackle Exhibition have their own characteristics. The former focuses on
cultural experience and interactivity, while the latter focuses more on
scale and professionalism. Both provide fishing enthusiasts with a rich
experience and communication platform.

TO YOUR WEBSITE
Increasing web traffic – the number of people who visit your website – is crucial

or brand. How could you go about it?
I
n today’s digital landscape,
increasing web traffic requires

a range of online channels
and tactics.
Whether you’re running an
e-commerce site, promoting a
service or showcasing your latest
products, the goal is to attract more
visitors who are likely to engage
with your content and offerings.
Search Engine Optimisation (SEO)
Optimising your website for
search engines is a basic principle.
The trick is to focus on relevant
keywords, meta tags and
descriptions. Create high-quality,
keyword-rich content that answers
users’ queries.

initiatives. This can introduce your
brand to a new audience and drive
traffic to your site.

answers and solutions while subtly

such as comprehensive guides or
tutorials, can consistently drive
organic traffic.
Improve Website User
Experience (UX)
Ensure your website is easy to
navigate, visually appealing and
provides a seamless user experience.
A well-designed site encourages
visitors to explore more pages and
spend more time on your site.
Use Social Proof
Display customer testimonials,
reviews or case studies on your
website. This builds trust and
credibility, encouraging visitors
to engage with your content and
offerings.

and upload it to platforms like
YouTube. Include links back to
your website in the descriptions
and annotations.
Run Contests or Giveaways
Organise contests or giveaways
that require participants to visit
your website, subscribe to your
email list or share your content
on social media. This can generate
buzz and increase traffic.

posts or articles with new
information, images or statistics.
Refreshing content keeps it
relevant and can improve its search
engine rankings.
