Welcome to the

Spring issue!

Over the past few days as we’ve been

getting this issue ready to go to press,

there have been faint glimmers of the

spring to come - lighter evenings, a few sunny

intervals and the welcome sound of birdsong,

along with the first green shoots appearing in

the garden. What a relief! It really has felt like

a very long, wet winter.

By the time this issue drops on your doorstep,

spring should be well and truly with us, and

we’ll be looking forward to celebrating Mother’s

Day and Easter. We’ve had some cracking

books sent in for our local authors feature,

which has helped us pass a few gloomy nights

and rainy weekends, and we hope you’ll enjoy

them too. It never ceases to amaze us how

much talent there is right on our doorstep.

He told us: ‘I took over

The George in 2014. It had

been shut down by the

for six months. After

signing the lease in March

2014 I took three months

to renovate it and change

the overall dynamics of the

pub. We have just finished

a big project in the garden

at The George, which will be open in March this

year. I love this pub so much. It’s part of me now

and I would struggle to part with it.

‘In 2023 I also took over the lease on The George

and Dragon with my partner Charlotte Summers,

and again we’ve changed the dynamics. We’ve

removed the pool table, fruit machines and jukebox,

instead installing a log burner, adding sofas,

renovating the barn for private hire events,

introducing a more substantial and quality wine list

and renovating the exterior and interior of the pub.

‘Both leases on the pubs will see us through

to 2029.’

Simon was born and raised in Berkhamsted,

61-home development at Haresfoot Farm

its third try.

The original application, which initally

The hub was removed from the third

The Society is in the process of digitising

The Society would love to be able to see these,

New kitchen equipment will enable a switch

to reusable cutlery and crockery, reducing

waste from disposable packaging. Plus essential

kitchen and office upgrades will create a more

comfortable and efficient working environment

for staff and volunteers.

As we went to press, these works were planned

to continue into March, with the National Trust

alerting the public to the likelihood of some

changes to service, including menu adjustments

and reduced seating.

Conservation work has also been completed

on The Bridgewater Monument. The external

granite has been cleaned for the first time in its

repointed, and the limestone stairs repaired, so

visitors can continue to take in the spectacular

views from the top of the 32m platform.

every Tuesday evening at 8pm at Swing Gate

Infant & Nursery School, Berkhamsted.

All are welcome – there’s no audition. Some

choir members do not read music but others are

more experienced. Experience is not necessary –

just a love of music and singing!

The choir performs three concerts a year plus

the occasional choral workshop singing a wide

range of modern and traditional choral music

with professional soloists and musicians, usually

in St Peter’s Church but also further afield in

Europe and the UK on its annual summer tour.

Its last concert in December raised £500 for the

roof repair at St Peter’s Church.

MP’s warning over Luton

Airport expansion

As we went to press, the Chancellor,

Rachel Reeves, confirmed that the

Transport Secretary would soon be making an

announcement on the Luton Airport expansion.

A decision had been expected in April, but

Rachel Reeves announced her full support for

expansion at Heathrow, at the end of January,

and for major infrastructure projects at other

airports. The media said it expected a decision on

Luton in days, not months.

The expansion plans would see Luton Airport

cater for 32m passengers annually.

Victoria Collins, MP for Harpenden & Berkhamsted,

said: ‘The Chancellor’s support for expanding

Heathrow airport shows an endorsement for

airport expansion that’ll be deeply worrying for

our local communities fighting tooth and nail

against the expansion of Luton Airport.

‘I’ve repeatedly made clear to the government

that expanding Luton airport would be highly

damaging for the quality of life of local residents

– it’ll worsen noise pollution and strain on

infrastructure. I’ll therefore keep urging the

government to oppose the expansion of Luton

airport, or at the very least to heed the advice

of experts.’

‘My life was turned upside down eight years ago

Tesco donates for inclusive school space

Pupils and teachers at Bridgewater School are

celebrating after receiving £1,000 towards

creating a modern new learning space.

The money came from Tesco Northchurch

Express in Berkhamsted and will be used to

transform the unused caretaker’s bungalow

into a dedicated building to help address the

academic, physical, social, and emotional needs

of the children.

The boys were so successful, other competitors

continually asked them about their training

schedule, and even what they eat for breakfast!

The boys train up to six times a week at

Knox Johnston Sports Centre and Berkhamsted

Leisure Centre. Both Dewi and Rafe are now

hoping to make it to the Nationals this year.

Head coach Doug Hose says their success is

testament to their hard work in the pool. ‘The

boys all work hard and enjoy themselves at

training. They all show great potential. The club

welcomes all keen swimmers from age eight,

and is always looking for new swimmers.’

Rafe’s ambition is to compete as an Olympian -

following in the footsteps of Adam Peaty. Dewi is

also a keen rugby player, and has to split his time

between the rugby field and the pool.

The space, which will be called the Haven, is

set to open by Easter and will include one large

classroom-sized space, two smaller meeting

rooms for one-on-one sessions, accessible

toilets, and two small kitchenettes for afterschool

activities.

It will also increase the school’s before- and

after-school care provisions, enabling more

parents and carers to return to work.

Andrea Bettridge, headteacher at

Bridgewater School, said: ‘This facility will

allow us to better support some of our most

vulnerable children. We aim to create a rich

and joyful learning environment, in which

every member of our school feels safe, happy,

valued and inspired to reach their

full potential.’

Park Aesthetics in Berkhamsted at the end of

last year.

Owner Kay Greveson (pictured second from

Club and other local businesses, and added:

‘It is very important to me to work with the

local community and have things such as

catering, flowers and decorations from local

small businesses.’

Kay recently won Best Aesthetic Nurse

Practitioner at the prestigious Safety in Beauty

Diamond Awards.

Join in cricket club’s

anniversary celebrations

BCC match in front

of pavilion

BCC v West Indies

As we mentioned on page 4, Berkhamsted’s

Cricket Club wants the whole town to join

in its 150th anniversary celebrations this year.

Chairman Tim Buckley said: ‘The Club

wants everyone in Berkhamsted to join us in

celebrating our special birthday and we want

them to feel that our pavilion and beautiful

grounds are there for them all to enjoy.’

This summer there will be lots of special

events, including a 6-a-side tournament on

the May bank holiday, a year 5 and 6 girls’

tournament, a Grand Reunion for all current and

past members, and a Members’ Fun day in June.

In July there will be a double header against the

MCC (Men’s and Women’s XIs), which is open

for all to come and watch.

Many local businesses are joining in, with

special anniversary sausages from Eastwoods, a

unique 150 coffee roast at Epicure, delicious 150

buns from Darvells, a special ice cream by Max,

the ice cream man on a bicycle, and a 150 Ale

from Mad Squirrel!

Throughout the summer, the pavilion will be

mounting #FamilyFriday events at the Cricket

Club from 6pm each Friday with food and drinks

to buy, All Stars coaching sessions for children

in years 4-6, and a T20 match to watch. There is

plenty of safe space for younger children to run

around and for families to set up picnics and

enjoy the beautiful setting.

BCC both pitches in action

Jess Potts, the Women’s Captain, said: ‘We

want everyone to know that they can come

along and watch cricket matches being played

at the ground for free and you don’t have to be a

member. You are very welcome to come into the

pavilion to order drinks and food or access the

facilities. We look forward to seeing you there!’

Berkhamsted Cricket Club is going from

strength to strength in its 150th year, with many

of its teams gaining promotion last summer.

Its junior teams, girls and boys, won a host of

junior county trophies, reflecting the benefits of

its professional coaching structure, yet its ethos

is focused on enjoying sport and developing

skills at every level. It has the largest Women’s

and Girls’ squads of any club in Hertfordshire,

with dedicated coaches. The Club fields four

Men’s XIs on a Saturday, a Sunday XI, a Women’s

XI, a T20 side and, with more than 420 juniors

including 100 girls, puts out 23 junior teams

across the age groups. It also runs disabilities

cricket coaching and welcomes applications

from any local family.

For full details of everything going on at the

Cricket Club this summer, look out for the free

40-page Anniversary Souvenir Programme,

which will be handed out at the Saturday market

on 26 March and 3 April. Copies will also be

available in many local shops, the library, civic

centre and the sports centre.

MINDFUL

PLAY

Mindfulness can be great for those of any age, and where

our youngsters are concerned, there are toys to help fit

into even the busiest of routines

As parents, we are increasingly

recognising the importance of

mental health for our children. One

way to nurture emotional wellbeing is by

introducing mindfulness practices early on.

Mindfulness toys are one tool that can help

children learn to manage their emotions, stay

focused and be present in the moment – skills

that are valuable not only at home but also in

school and beyond.

What is mindfulness?

Bringing attention to the present moment,

becoming more aware of our thoughts,

feelings and surroundings. For adults,

this often means taking time to reflect or

meditate, but for children, it tends to be most

effective when it’s integrated into play.

By using mindfulness toys, kids can learn

these valuable skills in a fun and appealing

way to help them develop the ability to calm

themselves, manage their emotions and focus

their attention on the here and now.

Benefits

Research shows that mindfulness activities

support self-regulation, patience and independence

– key qualities for emotional intelligence.

Toys

Fidget Toys – Providing tactile stimulation

that can help children focus and calm

themselves when feeling overwhelmed. Some

are designed with different textures, buttons

or sliders to keep little hands busy while

promoting concentration.

Breathing Buddies – Soft toys designed to

help children practise breathing exercises.

Some have a gentle rise and fall mechanism

to show how to take slow, deep breaths, which

can help manage stress and emotions.

Sensory Balls and Stress Balls – Simple, yet

effective tools that provide calming, repetitive

motion for those who need help with

emotional regulation. Squishing or rolling

these balls can help release pent-up energy

and focus thoughts.

22 / Berkhamsted Living View all our editions at www.livingmags.info | Like us on Facebook

PARENTING

Emotion-Understanding Games – Help

explore and label emotions, beneficial for

emotional development. By recognising

different feelings, discussing scenarios or

using characters to express emotions can help

kids build empathy and awareness.

Apps – While not a physical toy, they can be

a fun addition to your child’s mindfulness

toolkit. With guided meditations, calming

visuals and breathing exercises, a great way

for children to practise mindfulness during

quiet moments.

Creating a mindful routine

It doesn’t need to be difficult or timeconsuming.

Start with simple, calming

activities such as breathing exercises,

stretching or quiet play with a mindfulness

toy. Aim for just a few minutes each day

– consistency is key. Over time, children

will begin to associate these practices with

relaxation and emotional balance.

As they grow,

these habits

will support

their emotional

intelligence,

helping

them handle

challenges with

a calm and

focused mindset.

From old fridges and phones

to knackered TVs and PCs,

how do we know how much

is actually being recycled?

White goods or bad?

The recyclability of white goods (large

household appliances such as fridges,

washing machines, and ovens) depends on the

materials they are made of, how they are

processed, and local recycling facilities. In

general, metals (60-70% of the appliance) are

highly recyclable, and so are plastics (10-20%),

but the latter require sorting and processing

to separate types.

NEW LIFE OR

LANDFILL?

Car trouble

Modern cars are highly

recyclable, with

approximately 75-85% of a

car by weight being

reusable. However, this

relies on them being

carefully dismantled to

separate recyclable

materials from

hazardous components

such as airbags and

batteries.

Companies such as BMW

and Toyota have programmes

to recycle old vehicles and

recover valuable materials.

Companies such as BMW and Toyota

have programmes to recycle old vehicles

and recover valuable materials.

TVs and tech

Older CRT (cathode-ray tube) TVs contain

leaded glass, which is harder to recycle, and

newer LCD and LED screens have recyclable

glass panels, but contain complex

components such as mercury backlights,

making disassembly labour-intensive.

Smartphones and tablets contain precious

metals including gold, silver, platinum, copper

and rare earth elements (used in batteries,

circuit boards, and components), and are

recoverable, albeit lithium and ion batteries

require special handling. In general, around

80-90% of computers are recyclable.

Ways to improve

Ultimately, by choosing

brands that take

responsibility for their

carbon footprint and by

advocating local

councils and

governments to improve

recycling facilities, we

can move forward in a

direction that benefits

both us and the planet.

Heart of the community

Berkhamsted Town Hall has offered a venue for educating Victorian

workers, feeding wartime evacuees and marrying the town’s citizens.

Once derelict, it is now a thriving community hub once more…

Berkhamsted Town Hall is one of the

most recognisable buildings on the

High Street, but what is its history, and

how did such an outstanding building come

to be built in the town?

Before the Town Hall was built, the site

belonged to a firm of London carriers, with

stables and apartments above, and was also

home to a barn, washhouse and brewhouse.

When the Tudor market hall further east

along the High Street burned down, the

current building was commissioned to

replace it, along with the 16th century town

hall - the Court House - which still stands in

Church Lane.

Lady Marian Alford, the widow of Lord

Alford, who lived at Ashridge House, was

very involved in the plans to build the new

town hall. Funding for the plans came from

a substantial contribution made by her son,

John Egerton-Cust, 2nd Earl of Brownlow, as

well as public donations.

Edward Buckton Lamb was the architect for

this distinctive new building designed in the

Gothic Revival style. Lamb was no conformist,

and had been labelled a 'Rogue Gothic

Revivalist', whose designs were blasted for

breaking with convention.

His design included an octagonal turret and

a spire on the left, three two-light windows

with a gable above in the centre, and a threelight

serpentine-shaped oriel window. The

clock on the outside was added in memory of

Thomas Read, a former town surveyor, in 1897.

The building was completed in 1859,

minus Lamb’s suggested leaded glass in

the windows of the rooms overlooking the

High Street. At that time it was known as

the Market House and Town Hall. It was not

without controversy, though - a year later,

an anonymous author published a pamphlet

criticising the new building, because it was so

far away from the original site of the original

Tudor Market House.

1. The circus arriving in town with camels

outside the Town Hall 1900's

2. Original drawing of the inside of the main

hall by Edward Buckton Lamb

While the market hall occupied the ground

floor, the first floor included rooms for

the Mechanics' Institute as well as a large

assembly hall. Mechanics' institutes were

created to offer adult education to working

men, and often funded by local industrialists

who believed they would benefit from having

more knowledgeable and skilled employees,

and to provide a more wholesome pastime

than gambling and drinking in pubs!

Local leather-seller Henry Nash was largely

responsible for initiating the Berkhamsted

Mechanics Institute. Early meetings were held

in the living room above his shop in Castle Street

and moved to the Town Hall once it was built,

offering both a library and reading room. And

there it stayed for more than a century, until it

was outdated by public libraries, affordable (to

the masses) books, newspapers and eventually TV.

The old Institute rooms stayed empty until

they were converted into the Clock Room.

In 1886 the Clock Room was leased to the

Superintendent Registrar as an office and

used for the solemnisation of civil marriages.

The lease was renewed in 1997 and in 2000

permission was obtained to use the Clock

Room for civil marriages once more.

Berkhamsted Parish Council met in the

Town Hall until 1898, and it was also used

as a magistrates court until 1938 when

Berkhamsted Civic Centre was built.

It had another interesting use in World War

II, when the Assembly Hall became a British

Restaurant. These were communal kitchens

created in 1940 to help those in need, whether

they had run out of ration coupons, been

bombed out of their homes, or were otherwise

in need of help. The increase in the population

in Berkhamsted, many of whom had been

evacuated out of London, pushed the need for

the initiative in the town.

The Assembly Hall was renamed the

Wellcome Great Hall in 1992 in recognition

of a substantial donation from The Wellcome

1

2

Foundation, and

is now used for

wedding receptions,

as well as dinners,

dances, parties,

concerts and more.

The Town Hall

eventually became

derelict in the 1970s. It had been closed due to

fire safety concerns and because it no longer

raised enough income to maintain it. There

was a plan to build a new hall behind it, but

that was thwarted by legal issues and a block

on local authority spending. Meanwhile the

building fell into disrepair and sadly became a

target for vandals. The council tried to sell the

building, but a group of objectors - the Rescue

and Action Group - came to its aid! The group

included three 16-year-old boys from Ashlyns

School, who gained support from Berkhamsted

personalities: such as author Graham Greene,

author and broadcaster Richard Mabey, and

composer Antony Hopkins. Their efforts saw a

new Trust formed in 1979, which restored the

Town Hall to full use from 1982-1999.

Today, Berkhamsted Town Hall offers three

versatile rooms, with capacities of up to 200

people, for wedding and civil ceremonies,

receptions, private parties and meetings.

Activities on offer include a Community

Market, Egyptian dance classes, Kumon Maths

and English lessons, T’ai Chi and playgroups.

The ultimate guide to climbing plants

The space between the natural world

and the one we choose to construct in

bricks and mortar is, metaphorically

and physically, never closer than in the case of

climbing plants!

SOCIAL

CLIMBERS

However, deciding on which are right for you

may depend on the direction your walls face,

the maintenance you’re willing to give them,

and whether their appearance matches with

your property type. After all, what works on a

Patios Driveways Brickwork & Pointing Fencing Turfing Planting

thatched cottage in a village may well look

out of place on a modern urban estate.

Placement and maintenance

While outdoor climbing plants appear to have

a life of their own, the truth is they’ll need

help along the way if they are to flourish:

• Wall consideration: You’d assume outdoor

climbers need to face south or sit on southwest

walls to get the sunlight they need (as

well as heat from bricks for growth), yet in

much the same way as a few people prefer

a drizzly day to a sunny one, so too will

some plants want to be away from

direct sunlight.

The likes of the hydrangea, pileostegia,

decumaria and schizophragma all do well

on a north-facing or shady wall, so research

well before you delve in.

• Soil: Ensure your soil is well-drained,

with container plants requiring frequent

and focused watering to ensure climbers

survive and thrive.

• Planting: If not using planters, dig a hole

in the soil that's at least 30cm away from

the wall. Mix in compost or well-rotted

manure, lean the climber towards the wall,

and watch the magic commence!

• Support: While these plants are all

adept in reaching vertically to express

themselves, some will need horizontal

support, so don’t be

afraid to use a trellis

or wire to secure what

can be a weighty plant

to the wall.

Popularity

The most popular

climbing plants in

the UK are:

Wisteria sinensis

A south or west facing wall is a

particularly great place to grow sunloving

climbers, while the glorious Chinese

Wisterias are another step beyond. They’ll

grow to around 5m tall, with twisting,

woody vines and purple-blue flowers.

Hedera helix 'Goldchild'

For a rather shadier vista, the Hedera

helix 'Goldchild' is a good choice. This ivy

is quintessentially British - green in colour

with golden yellow edging, brightening up

the dullest of walls.

Far from sounding like a serial murderer

the Virginia Creeper is perfect for

The Honeysuckle 'Halliana' is an

attracts, especially during colder months.

The Eights - Joanna Miller - Out 27 March

It’s Oxford in 1920. The first women to be admitted to the university are arriving, among

them four women from different walks of life who are set to become firm friends.

Among them is Otto, an extravagant socialite haunted by her experiences in the war, and

Marianne, a vicar’s daughter - but what secret is she hiding from her friends?

Joanna intertwines real historical events and figures into this compelling tale of female

friendship - and there’s a cameo for Berkhamsted and the Common’s trenches, too!

Joanna studied English at Exeter College, Oxford. She lives in Berkhamsted with her

husband and their three teenage children.

All That Lives Must Die - Ivor Eisenstadt

This gripping murder mystery is set on the Suffolk Coast. When retired GP Max

discovers his holiday park neighbour Gertrude has died after falling down a cliff, he

refuses to accept that it is an accident. His search for the truth reignites his own anxiety -

and ultimately puts him in danger.

This is a real page turner, and Ivor describes the local area and its flora and fauna

beautifully. Full of twists and turns, you won’t want to put it down!

Ivor, a retired healthcare publisher, is based in Berkhamsted.

A Foundling at the Wartime Bookshop - Lesley Eames

We’re back in Chilterns village Churchwood with Lesley Eames’ latest cracking

comfort read set during World War II. In this fifth book of the series, a newborn

baby is abandoned on a doorstep, and the three bookshop friends set out to

discover who the mother of little Rose is, in a bid to reunite the family before the

baby is taken away. Another cosy, uplifting read that shows how friendship and

kindness can make such a positive difference.

Lesley lives in St Albans and has won the Festival of Romance New Talent Award

and the romantic Novelists’ Association’s Elizabeth Goudge Cup.

The Projectionist - Bigfoot

A weird and wonderful adventure for ages eight-12, set in a world where stories -

including cinemas and books - are banned, and most citizens are hooked instead

on ‘the vine’, a mysterious, all-pervasive plant that brings gossip.

However, one girl, 12-year-old Ceres, is intent on keeping her stories alive, and

projects her films to a few friends in the woods, using her left eye! But when the

projections start to fade, she must try to save her stories - all with the help of her

loyal goldfish Hemingway!

Bigfoot is a children’s author who can be found roaming Berkhamsted.

Dream & Commit; Accountability Diary - Dee Fagg

This journal aims to help you achieve your goals. Sometimes ‘self-help’ type books

have so much introduction that you’ve already lost the will to get further than

the first couple of chapters. Dee has, however, kept it simple, so that the reader is

already starting to get involved with tasks a few pages in.

As you complete the diary, it takes you through, step by step, identifying what

you want and how to achieve it. The final part offers a daily space to let you record

your progress.

Dee lives in Tring with her husband Liam, and runs a successful business

specialising in Microsoft Office documents and producing books for self-publishers.

The Perimenopause Journal - Kate Codrington

This hardback book is a thoughtful and insightful guide for women navigating

the perimenopause. It blends practical advice and emotional insight, with

knowledge and support.

The journal stands out – apart from its beautiful cover and weight - because it

goes beyond the typical informational books on perimenopause, inviting readers

to engage in self-discovery through guided exercises and reflective prompts. The

format is accessible and non-intimidating, making it perfect for those who may be

feeling overwhelmed or unsure about what to expect.

Kate is a Herts-based mentor, author, speaker, facilitator, artist and podcaster.

BRICKING

IT

Learn to create, treat and protect indoor exposed

brickwork, at the same time exploring its timeless appeal

Exposed brickwork is a hallmark

of contemporary interior design,

renowned for its rustic charm and

urban elegance. This aesthetic choice

enhances the atmosphere of any space,

creating an inviting environment that merges

modern and traditional styles seamlessly.

The appeal of exposed brick lies in its

versatility, and anywhere from industrial

lofts to cosy cottages, it can be adapted to suit

various design philosophies.

The trend for getting ‘back to brick’ surged

in the late 20th century, coinciding with

the rise of open-plan living. Ever since,

homeowners and designers alike have

embraced its raw, unrefined beauty, viewing

it as a canvas for creativity.

If you’re considering exposed brick for your

home, then the first step is to ensure the

bricks are structurally sound.

Removing plaster or drywall reveals the

underlying bricks, but this process can be messy,

so prepare accordingly. In some cases, you may

wish to consult with a professional to assess

the wall’s condition and to help with removal.

Once exposed,

brickwork

requires

treatment

to ensure

longevity

and maintain

aesthetic

appeal. Start

by cleaning the

surface with a

stiff brush to

remove dust

and debris.

For stubborn

stains or grime, a mixture of water and mild

detergent can be effective.

You may find you need to repoint some

areas if mortar joints are deteriorating

or damaged.

After cleaning and tending to brick

maintenance, you’re ready to wrap up the job.

Simply apply a breathable sealer to protect

from dampness and blemishes while allowing

the brickwork to breathe. This also prevents

trapped moisture

that can lead to

deterioration.

Beyond that,

the styling

possibilities are

endless. For a

contemporary

look, pair

with sleek

furnishings, bold

artwork and

warm lighting to

create a cosy yet

modern vibe.

Alternatively, for a more rustic feel,

incorporate vintage furniture, natural textiles

and earthy tones to enhance warmth.

Bricks come in various shades – classic

reds, browns, greys, yellows and more.

HOME IMPROVEMENTS

The trend for getting ‘back to brick’

surged in the late 20th century,

coinciding with the rise of open-plan

living. Ever since, homeowners and

designers alike have embraced its raw,

unrefined beauty, viewing it as a canvas

for creativity

Whitewashing or painting can lighten a space

and create a more contemporary, airy feel

while still showcasing the texture. Mix and

match with your interior ambitions to create

a vibe that works.

And if the considerable job of stripping back

a wall to reveal original brickwork just feels

too much to bear, fake brick adhesives and

panels are getting better and better, meaning

you can savour having (almost) the real thing,

for less expense and much less time!

RECIPE

Method

1. To begin, place the egg yolks in a small

food processor, blender or bowl with

electric or balloon whisk, and add

some seasoning.

2. Heat the lemon juice and white wine

vinegar in a small saucepan until the

mixture starts to bubble and simmer.

Now pour the hot lemon juice mixture in

to join the yolks and blend for 30 seconds

until thoroughly combined. Then, using

the same saucepan, melt the butter over

a gentle heat, being very careful not to let

it brown. (If your processor lid has a larger

feeding hole, cover it with a piece of cling

film to prevent the sauce splashing).

3. When the butter is foaming, switch the

processor or blender on once more and

pour in the butter in a thin, slow, steady

trickle; the slower you add it the better.

(If it helps you to use a jug and not pour

from the saucepan, warm a jug with

boiling water, discard the boiling water

and then pour the butter mixture into

that first.) When all the butter has been

incorporated, wipe around the sides of

the processor bowl or blender with a

spatula to incorporate all the sauce, you

should end up with a lovely, smooth,

thick, buttery sauce.

on a baking tray and lightly toast the split

muffins on both sides. Now butter the

cut side of the muffins and top each half

with a couple of folded slices of ham. Pop

them under the grill to warm the ham

then put them onto warm serving plates.

5. Put a poached egg on top of each muffin

half, add a little seasoning and then

spoon over the foaming hollandaise,

covering the egg (there should be a little

over 1 tablespoon of sauce for each egg).

Serve straight away.

Ingredients

For the sauce

SMALL

STEPS

FOR BIG GAINS

How making minor, consistent adjustments to your wellness routine

can result in major, long-term health benefits

Sometimes the key to achieving meaningful,

lasting improvements in health and

wellbeing lies in making small, manageable

changes. Rather than trying to transform your

routine overnight, incorporating minor

adjustments can lead to positive results.

Diet

Firstly, instead of focusing on what to cut

out, think about what you can add.

Introducing more fruit and vegetables into

your meals is a slight change that can make

a significant difference.

HEALTH

Sleep

Improving your sleep quality doesn’t require

drastic changes. Try going to bed just 15

minutes earlier than usual to help regulate

your pattern over time, allowing you to feel

more rested and refreshed in the morning.

Coupled with reducing screen time in the

evenings, this can lead to better sleep hygiene

and a noticeable boost in energy levels

throughout the day.

Complementing your morning smoothie with

spinach or an extra vegetable portion at

dinner can help increase your intake of

vitamins and minerals. It feels less restrictive

and can lead to better eating habits without

the stress of eliminating entire food groups.

Exercise

Getting fit doesn’t require hours at the gym

– small, consistent efforts can be just as

effective. Try incorporating short, highintensity

workouts into your day.

A 10-minute walk during your lunch break, or

a quick set of bodyweight exercises in the

morning, can improve cardiovascular health,

boost your mood and increase energy levels.

Over time, these small efforts build up,

creating a habit of regular movement that can

lead to significant fitness gains.

Hydration

Finally, instead of aiming for drastic increases

in water intake, start by drinking a glass of

water first thing in the morning which can

aid digestion, improve concentration and

boost your mood.

Over time, you’ll likely find yourself drinking

more throughout the day, reaping the benefits

of proper hydration without forcing it.

Incorporating these small steps into your

daily routine can lead to noticeable

improvements in your overall wellness. It’s all

about consistency and making achievable

changes that fit seamlessly into your lifestyle.

Mental health

Daily journaling can have a profound impact.

Taking just five minutes at the end of the day

to jot down your thoughts, list things you're

grateful for, or set intentions for tomorrow,

can reduce stress and improve mindfulness.

This process encourages self-reflection, Daily journaling can have a profound
