Welcome to the
Spring issue!
Over the past few days as we’ve been
getting this issue ready to go to press,
there have been faint glimmers of the
spring to come - lighter evenings, a few sunny
intervals and the welcome sound of birdsong,
along with the first green shoots appearing in
the garden. What a relief! It really has felt like
a very long, wet winter.
By the time this issue drops on your doorstep,
spring should be well and truly with us, and
we’ll be looking forward to celebrating Mother’s
Day and Easter. We’ve had some cracking
books sent in for our local authors feature,
which has helped us pass a few gloomy nights
and rainy weekends, and we hope you’ll enjoy
them too. It never ceases to amaze us how
much talent there is right on our doorstep.
You can treat Mum – or any loved one –

MP’s warning over Luton Airport expansion
As we went to press, the Chancellor,
Rachel Reeves, confirmed that the
Transport Secretary would soon be making an
announcement on the Luton Airport expansion.
A decision had been expected in April, but
Rachel Reeves announced her full support for
expansion at Heathrow, at the end of January,
and for major infrastructure projects at other
airports. The media said it expected a decision
on Luton in days, not months. The expansion
plans would see Luton Airport cater for 32m
passengers annually.
Victoria Collins, MP for Harpenden &
Berkhamsted, said: ‘The Chancellor’s support
Tring Brewery has
named The Repair
Shed as its ‘Charity of
Choice’ for 2025.
The Repair Shed is
a charity programme
that brings local,
older men together
to combat social isolation, offering them
welcoming sheds to make and mend, forming
bonds with like-minded ‘Shedders’.
Tring Brewery will produce monthly special
beers to raise awareness for The Repair Shed
and plans to host unique fundraising events
throughout the year.
Launched in 2015, The Repair Shed is just
one arm of Community Action Dacorum, a
local charity. Using the Repair Shed’s venues,
including Northchurch, ‘Shedders’ work on
personal projects alongside community builds
and refurbishments.
Alongside special beer releases, Tring Brewery
will raise funds through bi-annual members’
evenings, the annual ToadFest beer festival, an
online raffle and further ventures yet to
be revealed.
for expanding Heathrow airport shows an
endorsement for airport expansion that’ll be
deeply worrying for our local communities
fighting tooth and nail against the expansion
of Luton Airport.
‘I’ve repeatedly made clear to the
government that expanding Luton airport
would be highly damaging for the quality
of life of local residents – it’ll worsen noise
pollution and strain on infrastructure. I’ll
therefore keep urging the government to
oppose the expansion of Luton airport,
or at the very least to heed the advice
of experts.’
Tring Brewery fixes partnership with The Repair Shed
Jared Ward at Tring Brewery said: ‘As a proud
local brewer, we recognise value in social
community settings, whether that be the
warmth of a quaint village pub or the well-worn
workbench of a men’s shed.’
Twelve new beers are being brewed to raise
awareness for The Repair Shed, starting with
‘Chisel & Chip’ Golden Ale, which launched
in January.

Work at Wilstone Reservoir
National waterways charity Canal &
River Trust is planning a 15-month
programme of statutory works to strengthen
the embankments at Wilstone Reservoir,
which will see footpaths and the car park
closed temporarily.
Stretching for 1,350 metres, the
embankments at Wilstone Reservoir are
one of the longest of the 71 major reservoirs
in the Trust’s care.
Preparation for the project, estimated to cost
£6 million, started in January. Work to install
2,000 11-metre-long steel sheet piles into the
reservoir’s two 200-year old embankments,
will begin in May.
Ros Daniels, the Canal & River Trust’s
London & South East director, said: ‘To
minimise disruption, the reservoir won’t be
drained during the works, but the water level
will be lowered by 0.5 metres below capacity.
The reservoir will continue to supply water to
the canal, and the water level in the reservoir
will slowly reduce throughout the summer, as
usual. Our engineering project team will use
land-based equipment to carry out the works
and, to minimise disruption, will include a silent
piling machine.
‘Unfortunately, the nature of the work will
mean that the reservoir’s footpaths and car park
will need to be temporarily closed, as well as
some local roads for short periods of time. It
won’t be possible to fish at the reservoir during
the main construction element of the works
from May 2025 to March 2026.
‘The reservoir is an important wildlife site
and we’ll be making a number of habitat
improvements to the reed beds, as well as
replacing nine small and medium-sized trees
which unfortunately will have to be removed in
order to carry out the works. We’ll also have to
coppice a section of hedgerow.”

Jo’s feeling oh so lucky…
Tring artist Jo Esson has
opened Oh Lucky, a gift
shop in the centre of Tring.
Jo, who runs Lucky Lobster
Art, creates quirky prints,
illustrations, gifts and cards.
Her inspiration comes from
the love of the coast, the
countryside, animals and humour.
The shop not only sells her own work,
but prints, homewares, gifts and cards, all
supporting UK-made producers.
Jo told Tring Living: ‘Opening night felt like a

Walk this way
for charity
The Berkhamsted Walk started in 1968, and
since then has raised in excess of £300,000
for The Children’s Society – a charity dedicated
to supporting children in need throughout the
UK. It’s always been a community affair – set up
and run by members of the Berkhamsted
Committee with help from friendly volunteers.
The start and finish point are on a site owned by
Berkhamsted School and is well supported with
finish-line cakes by Gail’s Bakery on the
High Street!
With more than 300 participants in the past
couple of years, the Walk has become a firm
fixture on the local calendar. A cornerstone of
the Walk is supporting other local causes – most
recently, it welcomed the mobile coffee shop, The
Blue Tangerine Café. Run by young people with
special educational needs, the Café was set up by
local schools where young people requiring
additional support can thrive.
With three routes to choose from – six, 12
and 18 miles – and all welcome (including dogs
on leads), this wonderful day out in the
beautiful local countryside raises money
for a fantastic cause.

Council responds to
revised local plan
LOCAL
Tring Town Council held a meeting at the
end of last year, inviting Dacorum Borough
Council officers and the Leader to speak on the
revised Local Plan.
More than 200 residents attended, and
the presentation can be seen at
https://tinyurl.com/yc4dajdz
Following the meeting, the council issued
this response:
‘Within the short period of consultation
allowed, Tring Town Council has worked
with experts to prepare a formal response to
DBC on its proposals. Tring Town Council
supports the concerns raised by Tring residents
and in summary believes that the proposed
development is disproportionally higher
than in other parts of the borough; that the
proposals will have an enormous impact on the
infrastructure of the town and that there is a
lack of any hard promises that the infrastructure
(schools, doctors, roads, water supply, foul
sewerage and waste treatment) will be delivered
before or during any housing build and that
the ‘Land East of Tring’ site, in particular, is
high quality Green Belt adjacent to a National
Landscape (AONB).’

consultation can be found on the Town

Something that frequently arises
in financial cases – particularly a
separation or divorce – is whether the
parties involved have 'mortgage capacity',
and if so what it is. But why?
In divorces, the Courts (and family law
specialists, such as Raydens) consider factors
under Section 25 of the Matrimonial Causes
Act 1973. One of these is 'the financial
resources of the parties'. This doesn’t just
include the parties’ available assets but also
their ability to borrow money, particularly a
mortgage.
This affects most separating couples, so it is
paramount that parties know what their
options are. Here are the top five points for
those facing separation:
1. Despite what many think, if a mortgage is
in joint names, then both are jointly and
severally liable. That means that the
mortgage company considers anybody
named on the mortgage to be responsible
for the whole thing. If the mortgage falls
into arrears, both parties’ credit ratings will
be adversely impacted (even if they are
‘made up’ later), and the property could
even be repossessed.
Therefore arrangements for payment of
the mortgage must be carefully considered
following a separation and pending a final
financial resolution, and any arrangements
must be clearly agreed.
2. Some couples consider switching to an
interest-only mortgage, or taking a
‘mortgage holiday’, to relieve financial
pressure while they reach an agreement.
However, it is important before making any
decisions to take advice to understand the
implications of this because it may result in
mortgage arrears.
From the legal
perspective, it is
important that
agreement is
reached because
it may have
implications in the wider
context of the financial
discussions and negotiations.
3. When a lender looks at a mortgage
application, it is not simply multiplying a
person’s salary. They will also assess
affordability and sustainability, which may
vary depending upon what is agreed in a
financial settlement. It is therefore
important that as well as independent
financial advice, separating couples also take
legal advice from family solicitors so both
areas can be considered. For example, a
mortgage lender will look at income, but you
need to understand what maintenance may
be paid or received in order to understand
your income position fully.
4. A mortgage lender will look at received
maintenance – whether spousal or child
maintenance – but they will want to see
either a reliable history of payments made,
or a Court Order, and how long payments
will be made into the future. It is therefore
important that a formal agreement is drawn
up as a Consent Order and approved by the
Court, once financial arrangements are agreed.
5. There may be disconnect between what a
mortgage capacity report says a client can
afford to pay each month, and what they
themselves think they can afford given their
prior standard of living.
MORTGAGE
CAPACITY -
WHAT DOES IT MEAN WHEN
YOU DIVORCE?
It is also paramount to have both financial and
legal advice, so clients understand how their
needs and monthly outgoings may be assessed
by the Court and how that impacts mortgage
capacity.

MINDFUL
PLAY
Mindfulness can be great for those of any age, and where
our youngsters are concerned, there are toys to help fit
into even the busiest of routines
As parents, we are increasingly
recognising the importance of
mental health for our children. One
way to nurture emotional wellbeing is by
introducing mindfulness practices early on.
Mindfulness toys are one tool that can help
children learn to manage their emotions, stay
focused and be present in the moment – skills
that are valuable not only at home but also in
school and beyond.
What is mindfulness?
Bringing attention to the present moment,
becoming more aware of our thoughts,
feelings and surroundings. For adults,
this often means taking time to reflect or
meditate, but for children, it tends to be most
effective when it’s integrated into play.
By using mindfulness toys, kids can learn
these valuable skills in a fun and appealing
way to help them develop the ability to calm
themselves, manage their emotions and focus
their attention on the here and now.
Benefits
Research shows that mindfulness activities
support self-regulation, patience and independence
– key qualities for emotional intelligence.
Toys
Fidget Toys – Providing tactile stimulation
that can help children focus and calm
themselves when feeling overwhelmed. Some
are designed with different textures, buttons
or sliders to keep little hands busy while
promoting concentration.
Breathing Buddies – Soft toys designed to
help children practise breathing exercises.
Some have a gentle rise and fall mechanism
to show how to take slow, deep breaths, which
can help manage stress and emotions.
Sensory Balls and Stress Balls – Simple, yet
effective tools that provide calming, repetitive
motion for those who need help with
emotional regulation. Squishing or rolling
these balls can help release pent-up energy
and focus thoughts.

PARENTING
Emotion-Understanding Games – Help
explore and label emotions, beneficial for
emotional development. By recognising
different feelings, discussing scenarios or
using characters to express emotions can help
kids build empathy and awareness.
Apps – While not a physical toy, they can be
a fun addition to your child’s mindfulness
toolkit. With guided meditations, calming
visuals and breathing exercises, a great way
for children to practise mindfulness during
quiet moments.
Creating a mindful routine
It doesn’t need to be difficult or timeconsuming.
Start with simple, calming
activities such as breathing exercises,
stretching or quiet play with a mindfulness
toy. Aim for just a few minutes each day
– consistency is key. Over time, children
will begin to associate these practices with
relaxation and emotional balance.
As they grow,
these habits
will support
their emotional
intelligence,
helping
them handle
challenges with
a calm and
focused mindset.

From old fridges and phones
to knackered TVs and PCs,
how do we know how much
is actually being recycled?
White goods or bad?
The recyclability of white goods (large
household appliances such as fridges,
washing machines, and ovens) depends on the
materials they are made of, how they are
processed, and local recycling facilities. In
general, metals (60-70% of the appliance) are
highly recyclable, and so are plastics (10-20%),
but the latter require sorting and processing
to separate types.
NEW LIFE OR
LANDFILL?
Car trouble
Modern cars are highly
recyclable, with
approximately 75-85% of a
car by weight being
reusable. However, this
relies on them being
carefully dismantled to
separate recyclable
materials from
hazardous components
such as airbags and
batteries.
Companies such as BMW
and Toyota have programmes
to recycle old vehicles and
recover valuable materials.
Companies such as BMW and Toyota
have programmes to recycle old vehicles
and recover valuable materials.
“
TVs and tech
Older CRT (cathode-ray tube) TVs contain
leaded glass, which is harder to recycle, and
newer LCD and LED screens have recyclable
glass panels, but contain complex
components such as mercury backlights,
making disassembly labour-intensive.
Smartphones and tablets contain precious
metals including gold, silver, platinum, copper
and rare earth elements (used in batteries,
circuit boards, and components), and are
recoverable, albeit lithium and ion batteries
require special handling. In general, around
80-90% of computers are recyclable.
Ways to improve
Ultimately, by choosing
brands that take
responsibility for their
carbon footprint and by
advocating local
councils and
governments to improve
recycling facilities, we
can move forward in a
direction that benefits
both us and the planet.

Stirling Moss - racing legend
The internationally celebrated racing driver started his career in Tring,
driving an old car around his family home’s orchard
The orchard at White Cloud Farm
in Tring was the location for the
beginning of a vastly successful
career for the racing legend that was
Sir Stirling Moss.
Sir Stirling is considered one of the world's
greatest drivers, skilled at driving almost any
car, even though he never won the Formula
One world title.
He became synonymous with speed and
was a household name. Many a policeman
would stop motorists for speeding saying,
'Who do you think you are - Stirling Moss?'
He made headlines in 2000 when he was
knighted at Buckingham Palace and a palace
officer joked as he got into his Mercedes,
‘Who do you think you are, Stirling Moss?’
Pointing to his newly-received honour, he
said: ‘Sir Stirling Moss, actually.’
Although Stirling Craufurd Moss was born
on 17 September 1929 in London, the family
later moved to White Cloud Farm (previously
called Home Farm) in Tring, and it was in the
orchard there that he first drove an old Austin
around, getting a taste for being behind
the wheel.
Upgrading from the Austin, his first racing
car was a Cooper 500, in which he started
winning races – not that his parents were too
keen! As drivers themselves, they knew the
potential risks. His mother Aileen had been
a successful rally driver and his father Alfred
raced at Brooklands and had competed in the
1924 Indianapolis 500-mile race. But despite
their misgivings, by the tender age of 19 he
was already making his mark on the racing
scene, with multiple wins in various cars.
His future as a professional was sealed
when he met his future manager and friend
Ken Gregory, who steered Stirling towards
the new Formula 3 Championship, the ideal
category for his Cooper. As Stirling started
to make waves abroad, he was offered the
chance to drive for Ferrari in 1951, but when
he arrived in Italy found his space taken by a
local driver instead.
28 / Tring Living View all our editions at www.livingmags.info | Like us on Facebook
So Stirling committed to British teams,
competing in 67 Grands Prix, and winning
a total of 16. He also entered into other
endurance events, including Mille Miglia and
the Targa Florio as well as attempting land
speed records at Bonneville with MG.
In 1955 he joined team Mercedes, winning
the Mille Miglia the same year, with his old
friend Denis Jenkinson as navigator.
According to the Watford Observer,
congratulations from Tring Council were sent
on the win: ‘A congratulatory letter was
suggested at Tuesday’s council meeting by
councillor Mrs M.G. Grace, who reminded the
meeting that it had been the first time that
this difficult race had been won by a
British driver.’
It was a memorable year for Stirling, as he
also won his first Formula One Grand Prix at
Aintree in the British Grand Prix.
His classic 1955 Mercedes, in which he
raced, was sold in February this year at
auction for a record £43m.
His 14-year career ended in 1962 after an
accident at the Easter Monday meeting at
Goodwood, which left him in a month-long
coma and facing a year of rehabilitation.
But he never lost his love of cars and racing.
He worked as a commentator, raced historic
cars, and also ran a racing team. He was also
the narrator of the children's TV series Roary
the Racing Car. He finally retired from racing
at the age of 81.
Mark Cole is a journalist and author who
covered his 40th Le Mans 24 Hours in 2021.
Following Stirling’s death, he recalled how the
great driver had sparked his own passion for
racing: ‘I was fortunate to grow up in Tring,
Hertfordshire, where Stirling lived with his
family at White Cloud Farm, and on Monday
mornings during school holidays, my 10-yearold
pals and I would hang on the gate waiting
for him to return from his latest race; he
would always stop and talk to us.'
LOCAL
HISTORY
Sir Sterling Moss Lime Rock Park, September 4, 2015
Mark met Stirling through a neighbour
Norman Ward, who raced Ford Zodiac saloon
cars. The two racers were joined by Mike
Keele and started the karting at Long Marston
airfield. It was still occupied by the United
States Army Air Force in the 1950s, and some
American airmen had introduced go-karts
from California. ‘The circuit had two corners I
remember well,’ wrote Mark, ‘Wardy’s Wiggle
and Stirling’s Bump’.
‘Later Norman took me to Silverstone regularly,
where we would meet Stirling (who always had
time to introduce me, still in short trousers, to
his friends including Mike Hawthorn).’
Stirling and his wife Susie were also
regulars at The Stag in Mentmore in the 80s.
He suffered another serious injury in 2010,
when he fell three storeys in his Mayfair
home. But against the doctors’ prognosis, he
went back to racing historic cars.
He died on Easter Sunday, 2020. Lady Moss
told the Daily Mail: 'He died as he lived,
looking wonderful.’
Sir Stirling Moss left a £22 million estate,
and surprise gifts in his will included £1,000
for a seafood dinner to his agent, £10,000 to
his niece for a new horse, and a silver rabbit's
foot to his psychotherapist.

The trend for getting ‘back to brick’
surged in the late 20th century,
coinciding with the rise of open-plan
living. Ever since, homeowners and
designers alike have embraced its raw,
unrefined beauty, viewing it as a canvas
for creativity
homeowners and designers alike have
embraced its raw, unrefined beauty, viewing
it as a canvas for creativity.
If you’re considering exposed brick for your
home, then the first step is to ensure the
bricks are structurally sound.
Removing plaster or drywall reveals the
underlying bricks, but this process can be messy,
so prepare accordingly. In some cases, you may
wish to consult with a professional to assess
the wall’s condition and to help with removal.
Once exposed, brickwork requires treatment
to ensure longevity and maintain aesthetic
appeal. Start by cleaning the surface with a
stiff brush to remove dust and debris. For
stubborn stains or grime, a mixture of water
and mild detergent can be effective.
You may find you need to repoint some
areas if mortar joints are deteriorating
or damaged.
After cleaning and tending to brick
maintenance, you’re ready to wrap up the
job. Simply apply a breathable sealer to
protect from dampness and blemishes while
allowing the brickwork to breathe. This also
prevents trapped moisture that can lead to
deterioration.
Beyond that, the
styling possibilities
are endless. For a
contemporary look,
pair with sleek
furnishings, bold
artwork and warm
lighting to create a
cosy yet modern vibe.
Alternatively, for
a more rustic feel,
incorporate vintage furniture, natural textiles
and earthy tones to enhance warmth.
Bricks come in various shades – classic
reds, browns, greys, yellows and more.
Whitewashing or painting can lighten a space
and create a more contemporary, airy feel
while still showcasing the texture. Mix and
match with your interior ambitions to create
a vibe that works.
And if the considerable job of stripping back
a wall to reveal original brickwork just feels
too much to bear, fake brick adhesives and
panels are getting better and better, meaning
you can savour having (almost) the real thing,
for less expense and much less time!

RECIPE
Method
1. To begin, place the egg yolks in a small
food processor, blender or bowl with
electric or balloon whisk, and add
some seasoning.
2. Heat the lemon juice and white wine
vinegar in a small saucepan until the
mixture starts to bubble and simmer.
Now pour the hot lemon juice mixture in
to join the yolks and blend for 30 seconds
until thoroughly combined. Then, using
the same saucepan, melt the butter over
a gentle heat, being very careful not to let
it brown. (If your processor lid has a larger
feeding hole, cover it with a piece of cling
film to prevent the sauce splashing).
3. When the butter is foaming, switch the
processor or blender on once more and
pour in the butter in a thin, slow, steady
trickle; the slower you add it the better.
(If it helps you to use a jug and not pour
from the saucepan, warm a jug with
boiling water, discard the boiling water
and then pour the butter mixture into
that first.) When all the butter has been
incorporated, wipe around the sides of
the processor bowl or blender with a
spatula to incorporate all the sauce, you
should end up with a lovely, smooth,
thick, buttery sauce.

The ultimate guide
to climbing plants
The space between the natural world
and the one we choose to construct in
bricks and mortar is, metaphorically
and physically, never closer than in the case
of climbing plants!
However, deciding on which are right for you
may depend on the direction your walls face,
the maintenance you’re willing to give them,
and whether their appearance matches with
your property type. After all, what works on a
thatched cottage in a village may well look
out of place on a modern urban estate.
Placement and maintenance
While outdoor climbing plants appear to have
a life of their own, the truth is they’ll need
help along the way if they are to flourish:
• Wall consideration: You’d assume outdoor
climbers need to face south or sit on southwest
walls to get the sunlight they need (as
well as heat from bricks for growth), yet in
much the same way as a few people prefer
a drizzly day to a sunny one, so too will
some plants want to be away from
direct sunlight.
The likes of the hydrangea, pileostegia,
decumaria and schizophragma all do well
on a north-facing or shady wall, so research
well before you delve in.
• Soil: Ensure your soil is well-drained,
with container plants requiring frequent
and focused watering to ensure climbers
survive and thrive.
Living Magazines
SOCIAL
CLIMBERS
• Planting: If not using planters, dig a
hole in the soil that's at least 30cm away
from the wall. Mix in compost or wellrotted
manure, lean the climber
towards the wall, and watch the
magic commence!
• Support: While these plants
are all adept in reaching
vertically to express themselves,
some will need horizontal support,
so don’t be afraid to use a trellis or
wire to secure what can be a weighty
plant to the wall.
Popularity
The most popular climbing
plants in the UK are:
Wisteria sinensis
A south or west facing wall is a
particularly great place to grow sunloving
climbers, while the glorious Chinese
Wisterias are another step beyond. They’ll
grow to around 5m tall, with twisting,
woody vines and purple-blue flowers.
Hedera helix 'Goldchild'
For a rather shadier vista, the Hedera
helix 'Goldchild' is a good choice. This ivy
is quintessentially British - green in colour
with golden yellow edging, brightening up
the dullest of walls.
Virginia creeper 'Henryana'
Far from sounding like a serial murderer
from a few centuries back who terrorised
the Eastern coast of the United States,
the Virginia Creeper is perfect for
covering an unsightly wall quickly,
growing thick and fast, up to 10m high
and 5m wide.
Honeysuckle 'Halliana'
The Honeysuckle 'Halliana' is an
evergreen that offers constancy and
contentment, not least to the wildlife it
attracts, especially during colder months.

The Eights - Joanna Miller - Out 27 March
It’s Oxford in 1920. The first women to be admitted to the university are arriving, among
them four women from different walks of life who are set to become firm friends.
Among them is Otto, an extravagant socialite haunted by her experiences in the war, and
Marianne, a vicar’s daughter - but what secret is she hiding from her friends?
Joanna intertwines real historical events and figures into this compelling tale of female
friendship - and there’s a cameo for Berkhamsted and the Common’s trenches, too!
Joanna studied English at Exeter College, Oxford. She lives in Berkhamsted with her
husband and their three teenage children.
All That Lives Must Die - Ivor Eisenstadt
This gripping murder mystery is set on the Suffolk Coast. When retired GP Max
discovers his holiday park neighbour Gertrude has died after falling down a cliff, he
refuses to accept that it is an accident. His search for the truth reignites his own anxiety -
and ultimately puts him in danger.
This is a real page turner, and Ivor describes the local area and its flora and fauna
beautifully. Full of twists and turns, you won’t want to put it down!
Ivor, a retired healthcare publisher, is based in Berkhamsted.

reunite the family before the baby is taken
away. Another cosy, uplifting read that shows
how friendship and kindness can make such a
positive difference.

The Projectionist - Bigfoot
A weird and wonderful adventure for ages eight-12, set in
a world where stories - including cinemas and books - are
banned, and most citizens are hooked instead on ‘the
vine’, a mysterious, all-pervasive plant that brings gossip.
However, one girl, 12-year-old Ceres, is intent on
keeping her stories alive, and projects her films to a few
friends in the woods, using her left eye! But when the
projections start to fade, she must try to save her stories -
all with the help of her loyal goldfish Hemingway!
Bigfoot is a children’s author who can be found roaming Berkhamsted.

Diary - Dee Fagg
This journal aims to help you achieve your goals.
Sometimes ‘self-help’ type books have so much
introduction that you’ve already lost the will to get
further than the first couple of chapters. Dee has,
however, kept it simple, so that the reader is already
starting to get involved with tasks a few pages in.
As you complete the diary, it takes you through, step by
step, identifying what you want and how to achieve it. The final part offers a
daily space to let you record your progress.
Dee lives in Tring with her husband Liam, and runs a successful business
specialising in Microsoft Office documents and producing books for
self-publishers.
The Perimenopause Journal - Kate Codrington
This hardback book is a thoughtful and insightful guide
for women navigating the perimenopause. It blends
practical advice and emotional insight, with knowledge
and support.
The journal stands out – apart from its beautiful
cover and weight - because it goes beyond the typical
informational books on perimenopause, inviting readers
to engage in self-discovery through guided exercises and
reflective prompts. The format is accessible and nonintimidating,
making it perfect for those who may be feeling overwhelmed
or unsure about what to expect.
Kate is a Herts-based mentor, author, speaker, facilitator, artist and podcaster.

SMALL
STEPS
FOR BIG GAINS
How making minor, consistent adjustments to your wellness routine
can result in major, long-term health benefits
Sometimes the key to achieving
meaningful, lasting improvements in
health and wellbeing lies in making small,
manageable changes. So rather than trying to
transform your routine overnight, incorporate
minor adjustments for positive results.
Diet
Firstly, instead of focusing on what to cut
out, think about what you can add.
Introducing more fruit and vegetables into
your meals is a slight change that can make
a significant difference.

Exercise
Getting fit doesn’t require hours at the

lunch break, or a quick set of bodyweight
exercises in the morning, can improve
cardiovascular health, boost your mood
and increase energy levels.
Mental health
Daily journaling can have a profound impact.
Taking just five minutes at the end of the day
to jot down your thoughts, list things you're
grateful for, or set intentions for tomorrow,
can reduce stress and improve mindfulness.

Hydration
Finally, instead of aiming for drastic increases
in water intake, start by drinking a glass of
water first thing in the morning which can
aid digestion, improve concentration and
boost mood.
Over time, you’ll likely find yourself drinking
more throughout the day, reaping the benefits

GOOD
READER
Strong reading skills are essential for any form of academic success,
as they enable you to efficiently absorb, analyse and critically engage
with academic texts. If reading is not a confident area for you, fear not,
as there is plenty you can do to improve… at any age
Establish a goal
Before diving into a text, ask yourself: what
am I trying to learn? Do I need a broad
understanding or specific details? And how
will I use this information (e.g. for an essay,
discussion, or exam)? This helps you focus
only on the parts of the text you really need
to learn.
Familiarise yourself
Get an overview of the text before reading in
detail by scanning (look at headings,
subheadings, introductions, and conclusions),
skimming (read the first and last sentences of
paragraphs to identify key ideas) and
absorbing the visuals (pay attention to graphs,
charts, or highlighted terms).
Use techniques that help you
If you struggle to focus, break reading into
manageable sections rather than trying to
complete large chunks at once and use a
timer (e.g. 25-minute intervals with
5-minute breaks).
If you have dyslexia, use a coloured overlay
for papers/textbooks, or utilise software
that can read the material to you or has
digital tools to help you read (different
background/font size or line-spacing etc.).
Annotate, summarise and hypothesise
Underline or highlight key points, terms and
arguments, and write notes or questions in
the margins to help you reference. Paraphrase
sections to ensure understanding and create
brief summaries at the end of chapters or
articles and ask questions such as: What is the
author’s main argument or thesis? What
evidence supports their claim? Do I agree
with their perspective?

University texts often require more
than just comprehension - they
demand evaluation and critique
Think critically
University texts often require more than just
comprehension - they demand evaluation and
critique. Identify the author’s assumptions
and biases, compare the text with other
readings on the same topic, and question
whether the arguments are supported by
strong evidence. These are tools which are
essential for university and beyond.
Take notes (the smart way)
Mind maps are an excellent way to help you
remember material, by creating diagrams to
connect ideas visually. Flashcards are useful
for key terms or concepts, especially in dense
subjects and the Cornell Method, where you
divide your notes into key points, details, and
a summary, will help you absorb broad concepts.
Build your vocabulary
Finally, academic texts often include
specialised terms, so keep a vocabulary
journal of unfamiliar words and use
context clues or look up definitions to
deepen understanding. Soon, you’ll be
impressing peers with your highfalutin
language prowess.
