Clubs await 

decision on 

changes to 

alcohol rules

Number of drink drivers falls slightly 


FEWER DRINK drivers were caught 

in the district last year compared to 

2023. 

In 2024, there were 222 drivers 

caught over the limit in Selwyn, while 

there were 231 in 2023. 

The majority of those caught were 

in the Rolleston area (100) followed 

by Lincoln (65) and Darfield (34). 

The highest reading was in Lincoln, 

where a person recorded 1507 

micrograms of alcohol per litre of 

breath, which is about six times the 

legal limit. 

In December, Selwyn Times 

revealed suspected drink drivers 

leaving hotel car parks were being 

followed and pulled over by police in 

unmarked vehicles. 

It is part of a strategy to stop 

drink driving and send a message 

to those who may think about 

getting behind the wheel after a few 

drinks.

A SCHOOL has had to can the 

remainder of its swim season 

after the theft of a crucial pool 

component. 

Some time between 9pm 

Wednesday and Friday morning, 

Dunsandel School’s pool heat 

pump was stolen. 

“We arrived at school (on 

Friday) morning and noticed the 

pool had no water in it. Subsequently 

we discovered someone 

has helped themselves to our 

swimming pool heat pump,” said 

principal Dave Robinson 

The damage and time to 

replace the heat pump meant 

Robinson had to pull the plug on 

the remainder of the season. 

While most of the cost will be 

covered by insurance, Robinson 

said the impact is much more 

than financial. 

“Kids are gutted, staff are 

gutted, and it’s just disappointing 

that someone thinks it’s okay to 

help themselves to equipment 

that benefits all our kids over the 

swimming season.” 

He said without the pool, 

pupils will miss out on critical 

water safety and swim training. 

A police spokesperson said 

inquires are ongoing and so far 

had included reviewing CCTV 

footage from nearby areas. 

Robinson said it was the 

school’s second break-in in the 

last six months. 

“We had a break-in about six 

months ago in our caretaker’s 

garage, and a couple of things

Robinson said travelling with

SPATE OF BURGLARIES 

Police have ruled out any connection 

between a vehicle and multiple 

burglaries in the West Rolleston and 

Brookside areas. Last week, Selwyn 

Times reported the white Toyota 

Camry was wanted in connection 

with the burglaries. But now police 

say it is not connected. “Police 

identified the vehicle, spoke to the 

registered owner and are satisfied 

that they are not involved in recent 

incidents,” a police spokesperson 

said. They said inquires into the 

burglaries were ongoing. 

ACCIDENT COULD 

HAVE BEEN WORSE 

The occupants of two cars were 

lucky to escape with minor 

injuries after a crash on Saturday 

afternoon. Southbridge fire chief 

Shane King said one car failed to 

stop at the intersection of Kings 

and Southbridge Dunsandel Rds. 

He said a few seconds difference 

could have turned the minor crash 

into a major one.

Sizzling science behind professor’s 


NAME A PLANT and Associate 

Professor Tim Curran and his 

team have probably burnt it in the 

name of science. 

The Lincoln University ecologist 

has been leading research into 

low-flammable plants for the past 

12 years, leading to the creation of 

the Plant Flammability Directory, 

which now has more than 470 

plants listed. 

To test the plants, Curran built 

a plant barbecue which uses a 

propane torch to burn samples. 

“ We’ve worked out it’s well over 

5000 samples (of plants) we’ve 

burned,” Curran said. 

While it may 

seem as simple 

as just putting a 

blowtorch on the 

plants, Curran 

explained there is 

a bit more to the 

process. 

“We’re preheating 

that sample 

for two minutes

“Both of those things mimic an 

oncoming firefront.” 

After preheating, the samples 

are blow-torched for 10 seconds, 

after which more measurements

temperature reached, how long the 

plant burns once the blowtorch is 

off, and the amount of the sample 

left unburnt. 

Curran said New Zealand’s 

weather is changing to be more 

conducive to fire. 

“The predictions, particularly 

for the eastern parts of New Zealand, 

are looking quite dire. We’re

Curran said the list has been 

used by the likes of Christchurch 

City Council to develop green fire 

breaks on the Port Hills. The fire 

breaks are strips of low-flammability 

plants strategically established 

across the landscape. 

Curran and his team are now 

looking at ‘fighting fire with 

food’ – how green fire belts can be 

utilised on farms by using crops to 

halt the spread of fire. 

“ We’ve got a wider list that we’re 

working through publication at 

the moment which includes a wide 

range of crop and pasture species. 

“So with the idea being that 

you’d actually be able to have a 

really good think about how agricultural 

landscapes are designed 

from a fire mitigation point of 

view,” he said. 

Curran said it could lead to 

farmers planting particular crops 

in certain locations to be used as 

green fire breaks, making them 

multipurpose. 

“ You can start to actually 

have low flammable green fire 

breaks playing a really important 

multinational role across the 

landscape and that I think is where 

we’ll get most bang for our buck 

and get most people.”

surprises. 

“We’ve found that some of our 

native species are really highly 

flammable. 

“One of the really surprising 

things for us was silver beech 

which is a very flammable species 

which we weren’t expecting 

because that’s found in the wetter 

rain forests.” 

The plant flammability list 

is the result of a collaboration 

between Curran and Auckland 

University Professor George 

Perry, with help from three 

postdoctoral scholars – Dr Sarah 

Wyse, Dr Josep Padulles Cubino 

and Dr Azhar Alam, four PhD 

students Dr Azhar Alam, Dr 

Xinglei Cui, Dr Niger Sultana 

and Dr Shanta Budha-Magar, 

several masters and honours students, 

and many undergraduate 

students, summer scholars and 

international interns. 

Said Curran: “It’s been a real 

privilege to be working with such 

a cool group on a project that’s 

now getting out there in the 

public’s hands, and the public can 

use the information that we’ve 

been producing.” 

What you can do at your own home 

Creating what is known as a defensible space is one of the 

key things that can be done to protect your home from 

wild fires. The space is made up of two zones. 

Zone one – 0-10m 

around the house. 

• Keep grass short 

• Keep gutters and decks 

clear of dead leaves, debris and pine needles 

• Remove highly flammable plants 

• Store things such as firewood well away from the house.

around the house: 

• Reduce or move trees so they are not touching 

• Prune branches up to 2m from the ground.

Fears new alcohol

He said either the status quo

for smaller, low risk 

clubs put in place.

the current rules for clubs 

were fine. 

“We’ve always got a duty 

manager on the mountain at all 

times and we’re never more than 10 

minutes away at most from where 

alcohol is being served.” 

Along with submissions from 

Eastwick and Lill, many members 

of ski clubs and bowls clubs made 

copy and paste submissions in opposition 

to the new rules. 

Councillors Lydia Gliddon and 

Grant Miller, who are making 

the recommendations to council, 

said the feedback would be an 

important area of discussion, but 

declined to offer their thoughts 

until after their deliberations.

Another topic of the hearings was 

whether bottle stores should be allowed 

to extend their opening hours 

from 9pm to 10pm. Both the police 

and Health New Zealand opposed 

the idea on the basis it had

alcohol-related harm. 

Said Health NZ in its 

submission: “Longer trading 

hours increase alcohol 

consumption and can help 

create and sustain hazardous 

drinking behaviours. ” 

Hospitality New Zealand 

opposed the proposed 

introduction of a one-way door 

policy, meaning after a certain time 

bars would close their doors to any 

new patrons, while allowing people 

inside the bar to stay until closing.

SIX MONTHS into an ambitious 10-year 

capital works plan, the council says it is still 

on track. 

In its 2024-34 Long Term Plan, the council 

budgeted to spend $1.44b on infrastructure, 

such as buildings, transport and water. 

Across the district, $181m in projects will be 

completed in the 24/25 financial year. 

Before the budget was 

signed-off in June, council 

executive director of infrastructure 

and property Tim 

Mason told councillors the 

task was not achievable. 

Said Mason in April: “The 

guts of it is, we can’t deliver 

it all and the feedback that Tim Mason 

I need to be giving is we 

cannot do this.” 

However, now Mason was pleased with 

the progress. 

“I’m pleased that we’re meeting that 

challenge so far and the team is working 

really hard to keep that up, as we have seen 

with the large number of projects already 

delivered this year.” 

So far this financial year, the council 

has refurbished the Southbridge Pool and 

Castle Hill Community Hall, completed 

the Trices and Tosswill Rds intersection 

upgrade, the widening of Weedons 

Ross Rd, construction of the Broadlands 

Drive park-and-ride and the Shands Rd 

Council flags concerns 

over RMA reform plans 


RATEPAYERS COULD pick up the tab 

to introduce the Government’s resource 

management reforms. 

It was one of a number of concerns 

the council listed in its submission on 

the Government’s planned Resource 

Management Act (RMA) changes. 

The council was also concerned the 

Government was rushing the process and 

changes would not address systemic 

issues with the existing RMA. 

The Government is using a 

three-phased approach to replace 

the RMA with the Resource Management 

(Consenting and Other 

System Changes) Amendment Bill 

and Fast Track Approvals Bill. 

The resource management bill 

focuses infrastructure and energy, 

housing, farming and natural 

hazards, with the intention of enabling 

projects to “drive economic growth and 

productivity”, RMA Reform Minister 

Chris Bishop said in August. 

Said council senior planner Michelle 

Flay in its submission: “Council is concerned 

by the overly complex, staged 

approach to resource management reform, 

within condensed timeframes. 

“This approach increases the risk to 

local government, and ratepayers needing 

to bear the future costs associated 

with poorly developed policies and

Mason said since he made those comments 

last year, improvements had been 

made to the council’s processes.

development of a new procurement policy, 

adapted delegations to make it easier for staff 

to progress projects already signed off, and 

timeline changes to better spread the load of 

projects across the 10-year timeframe.

of the RMA, Flay said proposed changes 

“are neither targeted nor offer clear quick 

fixes to what are systemic issues”.

growth and repealing medium-density 

rules. 

Both changes could require the 

council to make major changes to 

its District Plan. 

For example, adding mediumdensity 

zones to Rolleston, Lincoln 

and Prebbleton took 12 months 

and cost ratepayers $1m. 

But Flay said in the submission 

the council supports the 

Government giving councils the 

ability to decide where medium 

density housing should be located. 

“Councils are best placed to determine 

where the MDRS (medium density) 

settings should apply, for example being 

able to disapply MDRS settings outside of 

walkable distances from essential services 

and neighbourhood centres.” 

Environment Canterbury has also 

submitted on the reforms. It supported 

changes which enable local decisionmaking 

but opposed increased ministerial 

control and reduced opportunities for iwi 

to have input on decisions.

can arbitrarily lower the value

in value, in the case of Darfield 

by 13.6%, surely this is a result 

of a computer exercise by them? 

They sure as heck haven’t called 

to take a look at our property 

or any improvements we have 

made, and I know of no local 

residents who have had a site 

inspection. 

I can understand how new 

houses built here will raise the 

average price for local property, 

but existing properties certainly 

haven’t gone up in value by that 

amount. To quote the Mitre 10 

ad, “they’re dreaming!”. 

Their revaluation however 

does conveniently give the council 

an opportunity to squeeze the 

poor residents of Malvern with 

an effective real rates rise greater 

than 14.2% because it will be 

imposed on top of these new 

valuation figures. Yet we don’t 

enjoy the services and transport 

connections that residents in 

the bigger centres in the district 

have, and our drinking water 

still tastes like crap.

nothing arbitrary about it at all. 

Rating values reflect the likely selling 

price of a property at the effective 

revaluation date, which in 

this case was September 1, 2024, 

based on sales evidence. People 

aren’t paying as much for land on 

average as they were three years 

ago – hence land values have been 

adjusted downward to match. 

Because there are 35,792 

properties in Selwyn, QV couldn’t 

possibly visit them all. And so 

rating valuations are calculated 

using mass appraisal techniques, 

which takes the following into 

account: What properties are 

selling for in your neighbourhood 

type of property: house, town 

house, factory, shop, etc. Changes 

to improvements made since the 

last valuation information about 

industrial and commercial rental 

trends obtained from market 

surveys 

We do, however, carry out 

targeted physical inspections of 

key property types, as well as any 

areas of high land-use changes. 

Rates 

The refusal of the council to 

allow any reconsideration of the 

14 odd percentage rates increase 

for this coming year on top of last 

year’s rise is a travesty. 

When the rises were agreed 

to last year via the 2024-34 Long 

Term Plan, they would have 

included an inflation allowance of 

presumably what was the then current 

inflation rate of around 4- 5%. 

Now that inflation has dropped 

to about 2% less than what was 

allowed for, council needs to reexamine 

their calculations and reconsider 

the projected rate. To not 

do so is to fleece the ratepayers of 

money they desperately need and 

which council no longer requires.

his like-minded colleagues will 

not change their spots. They have 

already proven that they don’t hold

This being the case, recoup more 

of the new subdivision costs from 

the developers. This would be for 

roading and piping. 

They in turn pass some of this 

into section price and some more 

of costs they carry.

said a few times now. Do what 

councils need to do – the basics 

and cut back on vanity projects.

The Selwyn Sister Cities Committee and the 

Malvern Community Board are pleased to 

announce exciting opportunities to explore Sister 

Cities in Shandan, China, and Yubetsu Japan. 

In June, if you are selected as a delegate, you can 

join other delegates from Selwyn and explore the 

legacy of Rewi Alley in Selwyn’s Sister City in 

Shandan in Gansu Province, north west China. 

Rewi Alley was born in Springfield and spent 

60 years in China working alongside the local 

communities to develop schools and cooperatives. 

This will be followed by a visit to Yubetsu in 

northern Hokkaido which has a sister city 

connection to the Malvern Community Board. 

Yubetsu is an agricultural hub for dairying, flower 

production, and fishing. 

This is an excellent opportunity to experience the 

culture, history, language and food in Shandan and 

Yubetsu, and stay in local homes in Yubetsu. 

You can join the delegation to both areas or pick 

one. All international, and domestic airfares, 

insurance will need to be paid for at your own cost. 

In Gansu Province there will be an extra cost of 

approximately $2,000 for hotels, transport, and 

tourist activities for seven days.

Kite Day brings out the child in everyone 

The crowd was out at Foster Park for the council’s 

kite day on Saturday. There were plenty of families 

enjoying the perfect kite-flying weather and watching 

the wide variety of displays showcased by Peter Lynn 

Kites. Among the children flying their kites were many 

adults embracing their inner child.

FROM BEING mates at primary 

school to finishing the Coast to 

Coast together. 

That’s the journey three 

Darfield High School students 

have taken, culminating in the 

multisport event on Friday and 

Saturday. 

Year 12 students Andrew 

Maultsaid, Kyan Vercoe, and 

Jack Molloy finished fifth out 

of nine teams in the boys’ 

school grade with a time of 14hr 

31.52min across two days. 

Molloy, who did the kayaking 

leg of the race, said it was cool 

to share the experience with his 

friends. 

“ You just get in, support each 

other, go hard and then, at the 

end of it, you just cruise, have a 

wee bit of a laugh.” 

The three 16-year-olds met 

while at Darfield Primary 

School. Maultsaid and Molloy 

became friends early on and 

Vercoe joined the group a few 

years later. 

“I’ve known Jack since day one 

at primary school,” Maultsaid, 

who did the three bike legs, said. 

“ We’ve done adventure races 

and stuff like that (at high 

school), and we’ve started roping 

Kyan into it.” 

Vercoe, who did the three run 

legs, said it was special crossing 

the finish line at New Brighton 

Beach on Saturday. 

“ I was pretty proud, pretty 

happy. It’s a really great 

achievement, just something 

to always remember that I’ve 

done.” 

Darfield High enter at least 

one team in the Coast to Coast 

every year. 

Sports co-ordinator Pip Deans 

said it was great to be able to 

offer students the opportunity. 

“ We’ve got a really good 

adventure racing group. We start 

in year seven with adventure 

races, some of them do like 

rogaines or orienteering.” 

Deans said the Coast to Coast 

was popular with students.

FOR 58-YEAR-OLD Ian Walsh, the 

Coast to Coast is familiar territory 

having competed 22 times, but this 

year’s race turned into his most 

“exciting” yet. 

Just 5km into the first 55km 

cycle stage, the Prebbleton man 

found himself tangled up with a 

temporary traffic light and crashed 

off the road. 

He managed to brush himself 

off and carry on with a bruised 

shoulder. 

However, 20kms later, the damage 

to the bike caught up with him 

when its derailleur snapped completely, 

leaving him stranded. 

“I was jogging along with my 

broken bike wondering how I was 

going to get to my teammate at the 

next transition because I knew he 

was busting to do the run and I 

didn’t want to let him down,” said 

Walsh. 

“Then I saw a camper van with 

an older couple watching the race, 

and the woman called out, ‘Do you 

want a bike?’” 

He gratefully borrowed the couple’s 

fold-out bike. 

Walsh ended up completing the 

55km cycle stage before returning 

the couple’s bike.

Passenger has led Weedons to 

victory in their top of the table clash 

with Sefton – and to within one

Passenger took five wickets for 

13 runs in his nine-over spell as

then scored 25 not out off 16 balls 

coming in at four to ease his side to

now will help get your 

brassicas through the 

harsh winter months,

THE BRASSICA family 

(Brassicaceae) is a big one, and in it 

are many of the hearty greens and 

sweet root vegetables that sustain 

us over the winter months. 

Winter brassicas include such 

staples as cabbage, cauliflower, 

broccoli, swede and daikon radish. 

Because they grow through the 

coldest months, when a drop in 

temperature encourages them to 

develop sugars that help protect 

their cells from chill, they are often 

sweeter and more delicious than 

their summer cousins. 

If you need more encouragement, 

you need think only about 

the price you will be paying for 

store-bought produce come 

winter! 

February is by no means too 

early to start preparing a brassica 

bed, but as for when you sow 

your brassica seed and transplant 

brassica seedlings, this will be 

determined by where exactly in 

the country you live. 

If you’re not sure when the time 

is right to sow and plant in your 

region, contact your vegetable club 

or community garden, or check 

in with a home grower you trust. 

This is an important step, because 

getting seed or seedlings into the 

ground too early or too late plays 

a big part in whether your winter 

brassicas thrive or run to seed. 

Preparing a winter brassica 

bed is a serious business. That’s 

because your vegetables will be 

spending the coldest months 

the cool 

outdoors, when the weather will 

be doing its darndest to challenge 

their resilience. 

Siting your bed, sheltering it, 

setting it up for excellent drainage 

and steady nutrient delivery, and 

protecting it from predation will 

all pay dividends down the track. 

If you’re up for a challenge, start 

the preparation without delay. 

Choose a sheltered, 

sunny site 

Your garden naturally receives 

fewer daylight hours in winter, 

so choose a brassica bed that will 

cop the least shade possible in the 

colder months. 

In most cases, north-facing 

situations are best, but if finding 

a sunny spot is tricky, consider 

pruning back shrubs or reducing 

the height of a tree. 

Shelter is equally important, 

as brassicas that struggle against 

gales often become loose in the 

ground and have their roots damaged 

as a consequence. This makes 

it more difficult for the plant to 

draw up nutrients. 

Outer leaves that become winddamaged 

also offer less protection 

to the inner, edible parts of the 

vegetable. If shelter is difficult 

to find, consider erecting windpermeable 

shelter cloth. If you 

plan to do this, make the barrier 

at least twice the mature height of 

the vegetables you will be growing, 

and keep it far enough back from 

the garden to prevent shading. 

Lastly, if you live in a high-rainfall 

region, consider using a bed 

that has a little slope on it to help 

moisture drain away. Alternatively, 

plant in a purpose-built raised 

garden, or mound up the soil in 

the garden. 

Improve soil texture 

Wet soil is cold soil, and cold 

soil slows plant growth. Keep the 

soil in your bed as open and freedraining 

as possible by loosening 

any hard areas with a garden fork. 

Incorporate into the loose 

ground material that is rich in 

humus (decaying organic matter). 

A compost that contains plenty of 

woody material is helpful. 

Provide nutrients 

Brassicas are hungry plants. 

Aim for around a small wheelbarrow-load 

per square metre of 

garden when adding compost. 

If you are short on compost, 

concentrate on the planting holes, 

to the width and depth of a spade 

blade. Compost made with kelp 

and plenty of green plant material 

will be rich in nitrogen. 

If in doubt about whether your 

compost has enough nitrogen 

content, add sterilised animal 

manure to the ground. Potassium 

is particularly helpful for the 

prevention of disease in plants, 

something that is critical in 

winter. 

Lastly, focus on liming your 

brassica bed (something that is 

especially necessary if its pH level 

is lower than the desired 6.5-7.5). 

Liming is best done several weeks 

in advance of planting, as it takes 

time to break down in the soil. 

Once available to the soil, it will 

help keep fungal disease at bay,

and limit its scope if it already 

exists. Add lime to the ground at 

a rate of 60-110g per square metre 

(a little extra if you live in an area 

that receives high winter rainfall). 

Suppress weeds 

After your brassica bed has 

everything it needs in terms of 

friability and nutrients, cover it 

with an organic mulch to keep the 

weeds away until you are ready to 

sow or transplant. 

If conditions are cooler than 

anticipated, use black plastic to 

do the same job while helping to 

warm up the soil. 

Protect from pesky pests 

Pests are at their worst over 

winter, when they, like you, are in 

search of any food available in the 

garden. 

Start your protection early by 

laying slug and snail traps or 

(where safe to do so) store-bought 

slug bait. Alternatively, head out 

to the garden after dark with a 

head lamp, and remove as many 

of the pests as possible, both 

before and after sowing and 

planting. 

In regions where white butterfly 

are still flying at the time 

of planting winter brassica, cover 

the bed with insect-proof mesh to 

keep these pests off plants (if using 

net, keep it back from leaves 

or the butterflies will lay eggs 

through it). 

When covering with mesh, 

remember that you are also providing 

a rarefied environment for 

insects, such as aphids, to set up 

home, so remove covers regularly 

to squish these pests. 

Adequate air circulation will 

also help prevent disease, so when 

planting winter brassica, don’t be 

tempted to crowd the seedlings. 

The seedlings of large brassica, 

such as broccoli, cabbage and 

cauliflower, need to be planted at 

least 45-60cm apart. Any garden 

preparation is important if you 

want to gain a useful harvest, but 

when it comes to a winter crop, 

groundwork is critical.

Have a passion for sport, have strong interpersonal skills, are highly organised and know 

how to make things happen? We are seeking an experienced, passionate and resultsoriented 

Sports Coordinator to join our team. In this exciting role, you will be key in 

facilitating and coordinating the delivery of sport, supporting our staff, learners, and 

coaches while inspiring and motivating students to reach their full potential. We encourage

Rolleston College is a well-resourced, co-educational school with a growing roll of more 

than 1,900 students and 190 staff. Supporting the Director of Sports and one other Sports 

Coordinator with: 

• Increasing participation in sport and physical activity 

• Enhance the profile of sport and physical activity within the school and the greater 

community 

• Enhance student enjoyment and development from sport and physical activity 

• Support and promote the safe delivery of sport and physical activity to students 

• Encourage and enable students to participate at their desired level of sport 

The successful applicant will demonstrate leadership, a passion for youth education 

through sport and physical activity, excellent organisation and communication skills and 

the ability to work effectively with a wide range of people. Key Tasks will include: 

• Promoting the school’s sports program and strategic plan through effective 

communication, marketing and administration 

• Scheduling and organisation of sports events, competitions, trips and tournaments 

• Collaborating with coaches, teachers in charge of sports, and staff to develop and 

implement innovative sports programs. 

• Develop and maintain pathways for sporting excellence and high-performance 

• Manage and maintain sports equipment, uniforms, and facilities. 

• Modelling and promoting the school’s values and learning ethos. 

• Other tasks as may be reasonably requested from time to time 

This is a full-time, term-time only position and the successful candidate will be contracted 

for 37 and half hours a week, with some flexibility required to accommodate after hours 

sporting events and activities. Our ideal candidate will have experience working within a 

school environment and coaching and/or sports management qualifications. Depending 

on skills, qualifications and experience, this role is banded at Grade 3 to Grade 4 of the 

Administration Work Matrix within the Support Staff Collective Agreement.

Wow with wallpaper! 

Wallpaper is a popular trend and is the 

perfect chance to be bold with your design 

choices, whether renovating or completing 

a new build. With digital printing processes 

and the ability to use textural elements, 

wallpaper can let your creative side loose, 

achieving a stunning visual and textural 

effect. 

Vivid colours with intricate patterns and 

designs focusing on nature and sustainability 

are on-trend. These nature inspired-designs 

follow the idea of Biophilia, meaning “Love 

of Nature”. Of course, this has produced an 

enormous range of botanical, flora, fauna, 

and jungle prints leading to blue and green 

colours being prominent in wallpaper colour 

palettes. These prints are intended to bring a 

sense of tranquillity and well-being. 

While wallpaper can affect the mood of 

your room, it can also help with low light 

levels and imperfect walls. For example, 

wallpaper with a sheen or a metallic or 

iridescent design will reflect light around 

the room. For those uneven walls, textured 

papers and Anaglyptas are the answer, 

while heavily patterned wallpapers can 

deflect attention away from flaws. Textured 

wallpaper can include silk or even jute 

wallpapers woven into sheets. 

Some wallpaper designs provide a more 

abstract and stylised flair by combining 

botanical images and contemporary angular 

geometric shapes. Other popular choices are 

Chinoiserie wallpaper inspired by Chinese 

and Japanese art or the Chateaux style 

inspired by stately British homes. However, 

an ombre effect or watercolour-style 

wallpaper will provide a softer look. 

Nowadays, it is a reasonably 

straightforward process if you’re the DIY 

type who doesn’t want a professional to 

hang the wallpaper. With paste-the-wall 

products, the paste is applied directly to the 

wall or prepasted wallpaper is given a quick 

soak for the paste to be activated. However, 

unpasted wallpapers will require time for 

the paste to soak in before hanging. Also, 

ensuring the surface is well-prepared before 

hanging any wallpaper is essential and will 

help to give your wall a great look. 

If you think wallpapering a whole wall 

may not be for you, perhaps installing a 

feature wall with a mural art piece is an
