Page 2 | Thursday, March 31, 2011 | THE BOWLING NEWS BWAA Taps Joan Taylor For Hall of Fame Honor Kelly Kulick, Walter Ray Williams Jr. Named Bowlers of the Decade Arlington — The Bowling Writers Association of America announced veteran scribe Joan Taylor of East Stroudsburg, Penn., will receive the 2011 Luby Hall of Fame Award and bowling pioneer Bill Bunetta will be honored posthumously with the Alberta Crowe Meritorious Service Award. The awards will be presented during the Columbia Awards dinner Tuesday evening, June 28 at the Gaylord Texan Resort in Grapevine, Texas. The Luby Hall of Fame Award, named after the late publisher and USBC Hall Famer (Meritorious Service, ‘74) Mort Luby, is presented annually to a recipient who has made a distinguished contribution to print, broadcast, telecast or photographic coverage of bowling over an extended period of years. The Alberta Crowe Meritorious Service Award is presented to an individual or organization for outstanding long-term accomplishments in and for the sport of bowling. The award, encompassing the BWAA’s John O. Martino Award and the National Women Bowling Writers’ Jo Ettien Lieber Award is named after Alberta E. Joan Taylor, has covered bowling at all levels of the sport and business for 35 years and is a current member of the BWAA board of directors. Bill Bunetta, who passed away in March, 2010 at age 90, was a bowling legend. He was a charter member of the Professional Bowlers Association, owned six world championships and is in 8 halls of fame. His only PBA tour title came in 1960 at Fairless Hills, Pa. Bunetta was known as “The Professor” because of his vast knowledge of the game of bowling and his great ability to teach the game. In 1995 he was the oldest bowler in history to roll back-to-back 300 games. Kelly Kulick and Walter Ray Williams Jr. will also be honored at the awards banquet after being named BWAA Female and Male Bowler of the Decade for their bowling accomplishments. Mike works for Alcon which is a major Eyecare company based in Fort Worth. He’s been with Alcon for 10 years, and transferred to Texas with them. What is your high series? 846 at Westcreek, I’ve bowled 4 or 5 800’s. How many 300’s have you bowled? 7 or 8 Thoughts on your big night? I was trying not to think and was just letting it happen. I had been in a bit of slump lately, shooting 660’s so I changed balls, tried to stay down and stay firm. Just go back to the basics and I started carrying everything. What ball did you throw? Storm Virtual Energy, on the right conditions it’s a monster. Who drills your balls? This ball was drilled by EJ at Ron Williams Pro Shop. What is your all-time favorite bowling ball? Back in the day it was the Black Hammer, it was so versatile. My favorites now are the Mutant Cell or the Virtual Energy. What is your average in this league? 225 What is your all-time high average? Probably around 225 How long have you been bowling? Probably 40 years, I took 5 years off around 2000 because I got burned out. My parents were bowlers so I started young, bowled junior leagues and stayed with it. I grew up in Queens, NY, bowled youth leagues there and then moved to Orlando, FL. I’ve lived in Texas for three years, and it seems that Texas has one of the strongest bowling communities anywhere, lots of great competition. Who is your favorite pro bowler? I always liked Earl Anthony, he was so consistent and no matter what they lanes were like, he was always close, hard to beat. Most memorable bowling moment? The first 800 I bowled in 1984. I was bowling in the Orlando City Tournament, I shot 802 on a long oil condition. It was the first 800 shot in the City Tournament. It would be great if more centers would have winter leagues with sport shots, instead of just the short seasons. The conditions better prepare the bowlers for the challenging lane conditions. Matt’s tip of the week: I have always told myself to stay under control and don’t get too upset when you throw bad shots or miss spares. You have to forget about those shots and move on.
