RESIDENTS IN Shirley are yet
to have a definitive answer on
the removal of oak trees after a
community meeting last week.
The tall trees, which are estimated
to be about 75-years-old, create a
canopy over the street.
The city council plan is to fell 17
trees on Emmett St. Fourteen will
be removed “due to non-compliance”
and three “due to other safety
to make progress.
Once finished, Homebase
completed by the middle of this
year.
attended by 30 people, was organised
by the community and was
a chance for council to hear their
“There was a range of views, diversity
front up and listen was great.
“We’re still questioning about
going forward and the processes
that the community wants to be
involved in.”
Roper-Gee said three trees were
unhealthy and their fate was sealed.
“Some trees have to go, that is a
certainty.”
Emmett St resident Emma
McGurk said there was a “grey
area” about what alternate options
there were if the trees were felled
and whether they could be used in
community projects.
Restored relic taken
back to Antarctic base
• By Dylan Smits
AFTER A whirlwind monthlong
trip to Antarctica, young
museum conservator Louise
Piggin is grateful to have played
a part in preserving the history
of early polar explorers.
The 26-year-old helped
return Robert Falcon Scott’s
expedition copy of The Count of
Monte Cristo to his Discovery
Hut on Ross Island.
Piggin, who works at Canterbury
Museum, was part of
the Inspiring Explorers programme,
which saw a group of
young people restore the book
and see the sights of the frozen
continent.
“It was very special because
you see the book and it feels
like a very old piece of history
that doesn’t fit in with normal
surroundings, but once we got
it back to the hut it fit right in.
It was home,” she said.
Returning the book was no
sure thing, as stubborn ice
prevented the team from getting
close enough to the hut to
disembark.
The next day presented a
narrow opportunity as strong
winds broke up the ice enough
for the team to quickly stop in
at midnight.
Poll shows
support for
event to
mark Canty
anniversary
• By Dylan Smits
A POLL by starnews.co.nz shows
strong support for a city council
funded event marking the 175th
anniversary of Canterbury.
It comes as The Star revealed
last week the city council and
Ngāi Tahu rūnanga will not support
any large-scale celebrations
to mark the first four European
ships arriving in 1850 like what
took place in 2020 for the 150th.
Of the 5396 online respondents,
64% want the city council to support
an anniversary event even
without iwi support.
Alternatively, 13% want an
event but only if it receives iwi
support, while 19% did not think
the city council should support
the anniversary at all.
Ngāi Tūāhuriri
Rūnanga elder
Dr Te Maire Tau
acknowledged the
significance of the
anniversary when
contacted by The
Star.
“The 175th Te Maire Tau
anniversary of
the arrival of
the Canterbury pilgrims is an
event that shaped our lives. It is
a historical event that we need to
acknowledge and reflect upon,” he
said. • Turn to page 4
COUNCILLORS have been
briefed on ways the city’s three
water services could be delivered
going forward.
Council staff have completed
the Local Water Done Well
interim business case, assessing
three potential models for the
future delivery of water services.
The models considered were
enhancing the status quo with
an in-house delivery model,
creating a council-controlled
organisation (CCO) for all three
waters, or a two-waters (water
supply and wastewater) councilcontrolled
organisation.
Councillors will consider a
report on February 19 identifying
a preferred model based on
a comparative assessment of the
options.
“We know how important
water is to our residents, so
Latest Canterbury news at starnews.co.nz
this decision is critical for us
to get the best outcome for our
community,” city council chief
executive Mary Richardson said.
Under all models, the standard
of water services will be
maintained or improved. The
impact on rates would be about
the same between the three
models.
Public consultation on the
three delivery options will
start in March.
The Government’s Local
Water Done Well reforms
replace the three waters reform
programme and aims to address
long-standing water infrastructure
challenges across the
country.
Councils are required to select
a water service delivery model to
ensure sustainable and efficient
management of water services.
Fold out bike saves the
day for race veteran
FOR IAN Walsh, the Coast
to Coast is familiar territory,
having competed 22 times. But
this year’s race turned into his
most “exciting” yet.
Just 5km into the first 55km
cycle stage on Saturday, the
58-year-old crashed into a temporary
traffic light.
“I wasn’t really looking ahead
like I should have. Suddenly
I saw it (traffic light) coming
directly in front of me. I swerved
to the inside to avoid it, but my
balance took me the other way.”
After a heavy collision with
the traffic light, his shoulder was
bruised and sore but he managed
to brush himself off and
carry on.
The Coast to Coast, held every
February, challenges athletes to
run, kayak and cycle from the
West Coast’s Kumara Junction
beach to New Brighton Pier.
Walsh, from Prebbleton, was
competing in the male veteran
two-day race in the two-person
team category.
Back on the road, his troubles
weren’t over.
The damage to his bike
caught up with him 20km
later when its derailleur (gear
changing mechanism) snapped
completely. It left him stranded.
With time ticking and limited
options, Walsh weighed his
next move.
“I was jogging along with my
broken bike wondering how
I was going to get to my team
mate at the next transition
because I knew he was busting
to do the run and I didn’t want
to let him down,” he said.
Walsh was thinking about
asking if could borrow a bike
from a nearby farmhouse.
“Then I saw a camper van
with an older couple watching
the race, and the woman called
out: ‘Do you want a bike?’”
He was offered a fold-out bike,
which he gratefully accepted.
“It was a small-wheeled bike
that was ‘very substantially built’
with a big carrier on the back,”
said Walsh.
“I was alright on the downhill
and okay on the flat but when I
came to the gentle climbs, man
I was burning the wick there. I
think my heart rate was about
170bpm keeping up with the
COMEBACK: After
crashing and
breaking his bike
during the Coast
used a borrowed
fold-out bike to
stay in the race. He
teammate Richard
Thomas were third
in their category.
back of the group.”
Walsh ended up completing
the 55km cycle stage before
tracking down the couple and
returning the bike near the
finish line. The incident was the
first crash he’d had in 35 years
of road cycling.
“I think after doing some adventure
races, you have to solve
problems as you go.”
Despite the setbacks, Walsh
and teammate Richard Thomas
were third in their category.
New Port Hills fire
sensors operational
The city council has started
operating four new fire sensors
in the Port Hills. The council’s
Smart Christchurch team has
developed the Information
Network project in partnership
with Fire and Emergency New
Zealand and Attentis in response
to the 2017 wildfires. The network
employs smart technology to
detect early signs of fire ignition,
enhancing detection, notification,
and mitigation efforts. Each
sensor monitors weather and
environmental data, providing
council staff and FENZ with realtime
intelligence and situational
awareness.
Ngāi Tahu freshwater
case in high court
A legal dispute started on
Monday as Ngāi Tahu seeks
more control over freshwater in
the South Island. The lawsuit in
the High Court at Christchurch
aims to establish ‘chieftainship’
over the water. In practical
terms, this means the iwi wants
the Crown to implement cooperation
and partnership over
freshwater resources, including
the regulation, governance and
allocation of freshwater.
The team left the book sitting
Piggin said the huts the team
visited were a time capsule of the
early Antarctic expeditions.
“You could really picture the
explorers just living in there. It’s
very well preserved.”
The huts had a strong “woody”
smell which contrasted with the
fresh Antarctic air.
Mixed views from politicians
on no event for anniversary
• From page 1
“We have come too far in
our history to engage in anticolonial
rhetoric. There were
benefits and costs to Ngāi
Tahu, but our elders anchored
a settlement with the Crown
under the Ngāi Tahu Claims
Settlement Act 1998,” said Tau.
He said the 175th anniversary
is “vital to our collective history
and identity”.
Tau declined to comment on
why the Christchurch-based
Ngāi Tahu rūnanga has not been
interested in participating in an
anniversary event, claiming there
was “nothing further to add”.
The milestone was a reminder
of other significant anniversaries
for the South Island in the
coming decades, he said.
These include the 200th anniversary
of the signing of the
Treaty of Waitangi in 2040 and
the centenary this year of Ngāi
Tahu formalising its whakapapa
(genealogy) and collective identity.
Some councillors and their
election rivals expressed mixed
sentiment about the lack of city
council support.
Deputy mayor Pauline Cotter
said she was “not informed
enough” to give a definitive view
yet of the city council decision.
“I guess
there’s the question
of whether
175th is a super
significant
anniversary
anyway? I think
council may
have not seen
the necessity
in funding this
one. Maybe the 200th will be a
different story.”
Cotter’s opponent for the
Innes Ward seat, Ali Jones, said
she was “really
disappointed”
there will not
be a councilfunded
event.
“I think we
should acknowledge
the
settlers and at
the same time
Pauline
Cotter
Ali Jones
link the issues that colonisation
has caused and continues to
cause.”
Jones was unsure whether
the city council should proceed
with an anniversary event
without the Ngāi Tahu rūnanga
onboard.
A majority poll result in
favour of an event shows “people
are interested,” said Jones.
“There’s many groups which
need to be engaged with. I think
there should be more public
conversation about it.”
Riccarton Ward councillor
Tyla Harrison-Hunt backed
the decision by
council staff
to not support
an anniversary
event.
“If Ngāi Tahu
were interested
in it, I’d be supportive.
If council
don’t want to
support it then
I support them
too,” he said.
Tyla
Harrison-
Hunt
Despite the poll, Harrison-
Hunt said the city council and
Ngāi Tahu being treaty partners
meant the anniversary should
require rūnanga support to
proceed rather than just general
public opinion.
The other candidate for the
Riccarton Ward, Tony Simons,
said the 175th anniversary did
not seem as important to celebrate
as the 150th or 200th.
“I’m not necessarily in favour
of it or opposed to it, but it
is understandable that Ngāi
Tahu doesn’t really want to
be involved and that should
probably be taken into account.”
Alcohol policy could hurt businesses
and do little to reduce harm – reps
• By Dylan Smits
REPRESENTATIVES for
the city’s bars and nightclubs
believe proposals for the Local
Alcohol Policy (LAP) could hurt
businesses and do little to reduce
alcohol harm.
The city council is opening
up the draft options for public
submissions on Monday.
The LAP aims to address
alcohol-related harm, including
through a potential 2am oneway-entry
requirement for all
on-licences.
On-licences outside the central
city, such as bars, pubs, nightclubs,
cafés, restaurants, and
social and sports clubs, may also
be forced to close at 1am.
The current trading hours are
8am to 4am.
Hospitality
New Zealand
chief executive
Steve Armitage
said the proposals
would lead
to revenue loss
due to reduced
Steve
operating hours,
Armitage
and no new
customers coming in the case of
one-way-entry.
“One way door policies have
minimal effectiveness regarding
alcohol related harm, and can
present safety issues separating
groups and resulting in congregating
of crowds outside closing
venues ratheron than natural
dispersion,” he said.
Armitage said well-managed
on-premise environments are the
safest place to consume alcohol,
given the host responsibility
requirements in place.
Central City Business Association
chair Annabel Turley said
members with on-licence businesses
are “concerned” about the
one-way-entry proposal.
“It’s not something we would
be pushing for. Obviously at
that time of night our members
would be quite busy but people
would also be leaving. They want
Turley said the association has
not developed an official position
on the LAP proposals yet but
will likely make a public submission.
Community Action on Youth
and Drugs (CAYAD) project
worker Paul McMahon also
questioned the effectiveness of
the one-way-entry proposal.
“In theory it helps blunt the
effect of a night of drinking by
keeping everyone in one place
where responsible hosts can look
after them,” he said.
“But on the other hand, the
evidence base for one way policies
is very mixed. It’s not clear
whether it makes more than a
minor difference or not.”
McMahon, who is also the
Waitai Coastal-Burwood-Linwood
Community Board chair,
said CAYAD is more focused on
implementing new restrictions
for off-licences where most alcohol
is bought.
The possible restrictions on
off-licences, such as liquor stores
and supermarkets, may include
the requirement to stop selling
alcohol at 9pm.
The maximum trading hours
are currently 7am to 11pm.
There could also be a temporary
freeze on all new licence
applications in areas of high
deprivation.
Licenced premises could also
be banned from being located
near sensitive sites, such as
schools, pre-schools, places
of worship and rehabilitation
facilities.
Chch man says relatives will stay in
Gaza, despite Trump’s proposition
• By Rachel Helyer
Donaldson
A CHRISTCHURCH man
who lost 55 relatives in three
Israeli airstrikes on Gaza says
his remaining family will never
leave the area, despite a US
proposal to remove them.
President Donald Trump
doubled down on his plan on
Friday after it was rejected by
Palestinians and leaders around
the world.
Yasser
Abdulaal, who
has lived in
Christchurch for
five years, said
his two sisters
lost their homes
in the 15-monthlong
war.
Abdulaal said
Yasser
Abdulaal
they and their husbands – all
teachers – could have left at the
start of the bombing but refused
to abandon their land – and they
would not be leaving now.
“After the ceasefire and with
Trump’s statements, they are
definitely not going to leave
Gaza, regardless of what he says
and what (the US) does. It’s their
land.”
He said New Zealand should
recognise Palestine as a state and
sanction Israel in accordance
with international law.
It should also call for more
funding for international aid to
Gaza, he said.
“New Zealand voted for a
two-state solution and we have
been asking the Government
to enforce that. Many countries
during the genocide already
recognise Palestine as a state but
our government sees it as ‘not the
right time’.
“I think it is the right time, and
New Zealand should recognise
Palestine immediately.”
Abdulaal said he reached a
moment during the war where
he couldn’t bring himself to call
his sisters.
“I didn’t know what to say,
remotely, from New Zealand. It’s
a really hard time for everyone,
they’ve been in tents for more
than eight months, both (my
sisters’) houses have gone, they
are completely rubble. They are
still in tents despite the ceasefire
because they have no other place
to go to.”
But he has talked to the pair
since the ceasefire began.
“One of my sisters can’t even
WAR: A man walks past rubble and damaged buildings
July 8 last year.
PHOTO: GETTY
go and see her house as there’s
still Israeli tanks in that area (the
Philadelphia corridor). But we
know from footage – as she says
– the height of my house now is
half a metre, it was two levels but
now it’s half a metre.”
“It’s mixed emotions. The killing
and bloodshed has stopped,
but I have lost 55 (relatives) in
the airstrikes, most of them
women and children.
“They haven’t even had a
proper funeral . . . it’s really hard,
people are just trying to get food
for their kids, those basic human
rights for people which they
don’t have.
“They are happy with the
ceasefire, and we hope it will be a
permanent ceasefire, but we have
also lost lots of people . . . (the
rest) have lost their houses, their
jobs, everything.
“After the ceasefire and
with Trump’s statements,
they are definitely not
going to leave Gaza,
regardless of what he says
and what (the US) does.
It’s their land.”
– Yasser Abdulaal
“When I close my eyes and
I think about losing 55 people,
and that’s just the ones we know
about. It’s horrific, I can’t believe
it . . . they’re all relatives: cousins,
uncles, extended family.”
Trump’s proposal was a
“dangerous statement and
outrageous”, Abdulaal said. He
likened it to “a reward to (Israel
Prime Minister Benjamin) Netanyahu
and the Israeli Government
who have been bombing
everything in Gaza, killing
everyone, committing genocide”.
“(Trump) says he wants
to drive the people out of
Gaza, meaning he wants to
ethnically cleanse the people
from Gaza, which is another war
crime,” said Abdulaal.
“This is our land and we are
rooted to this land and we’ll
never leave it.”
Gloriavale man jailed for abuse of girls
• By Anna Sargent
A FORMER Gloriavale member
who was sexually abused in the
Christian community when she
was 13 years old has told her
abuser he stole her childhood and
her innocence.
Gloriavale man Fervent Ben-Canaan
was jailed for four years and
two months in the Christchurch
District Court last week for sexual
offending against eight girls.
The 45-year-old preyed upon
some girls as they slept, and
touched them while they were caring
for children or working at the
Christian community.
He pleaded guilty to eight
charges of indecent assault and indecent
acts – some of which were
representative – against girls aged
11 and over, part-way through a
jury trial in the Greymouth District
Court last year.
The offending occurred between
2004 and 2018.
A survivor, who was abused by
Ben-Canaan when she was 13,
broke down in tears in court reading
her victim impact statement.
She said during the period she was
abused she felt like she was living
in a never-ending nightmare, and
it caused immense shame and
guilt.
“I was a child of 13 and due
to the culture I was raised in, I
couldn’t put into words what was
happening. I believed if I said
in the Christchurch District Court.
anything to anyone I would not be
allowed to marry. I, like so many
girls, were expected to come to
marriage pure and untouched, but
due to the sexual assault I wasn’t.
“After the abuse I would take
one- to two-hour long showers
because I never felt clean.”
The woman said she felt like
she was a disappointment to her
parents.
“My relationship with my own
father began to fade due to me
being too scared of a male touching
me.”
The woman said although she
now knew what happened to her
was not her fault, it continued to
haunt her.
Ben-Canaan’s lawyer Marcus
Zintil said his client had acknowledged
that he had a sexual
attraction towards adolescent
girls. Zintil said Ben-Canaan had
shown genuine remorse and had
written letters of apology.
The pre-sentence report assessed
him as having low risk of
re-offending, Zintil said.
Judge Neave said Ben-Canaan
had caused long-standing psychological
damage to his victims,
and there had been considerable
breaches of trust.
“Offending occurred within
[the victims’] home, in many
cases in the bedrooms of the
complainants where they were
entitled to feel safe.”
According to a summary of
facts, Gloriavale’s leaders knew
about Ben-Canaan’s offending,
but asked him to apologise in
front of the community for being
sinful and sent him to live in a
farmhouse away from the main
Gloriavale site.
Leaders arranged a meeting
after one of Ben-Canaan’s victims
pointed a knife and threatened to
hurt him if he did not leave her
alone.
Ben-Canaan lived with his
family in a communal accommodation
block until June 2018,
when police were alerted to an
allegation he indecently assaulted
a 13-year-old girl.
The girl and her parents were
reluctant to formalise a complaint
while they still lived at Gloriavale,
hampering the investigation.
Ben-Canaan declined to
make a formal police statement
and denied touching the girl,
although he admitted having inappropriate
thoughts and completed
the STOP programme
to address his sexual desire for
young girls.
In 2021, police and Oranga
Tamariki launched a major
investigation into sexual offending
at Gloriavale that involved
screening all girls aged between
five and 17, some of whom disclosed
abuse.
One of Ben-Canaan’s victims
recalled him coming into a
bedroom she shared with her
siblings, getting under her
sheets and touching her.
On more than 20 other occasions,
he put his hand up her
dress while she was sleeping on
a couch in the main building
after early starts washing and
cooking.
Ben-Canaan put his hand up
another girl’s dress and rubbed
her leg while she was resting
on a mattress after a morning
working in the kitchen.
Another victim described
Ben-Canaan rubbing her breast
at the pre-school, and on two
occasions woke to find him
touching her in her bedroom.
Judge Neave sentenced Ben-
Canaan to four years and two
months’ imprisonment.
Working longer for love and money
People are retiring later,
with more people over
65 still in the workforce.
Reporter Dylan
Smits finds out what
motivates two of them
“It’s good to be doing things not just for myself. You do
get to a point in life where you want to give back. Having
said that, I do need to work.”
– Chrissie Whitfield
RETIREMENT is becoming a
distant prospect for more seniors
in Christchurch. Some are
choosing to continue working,
while for others it is a financial
necessity.
The latest census data shows
the city’s over-65 working population
has increased by nearly
40% since 2013.
There are now 13,701 over-65s
in part-time or full-time employment,
up from 9807 in 2013.
Fifty-one per cent are working
full-time and 49% part-time.
Chrissie Whitfield, 67, has a
full-time job.
The Merivale resident is a
policy and IT consultant for
businesses and charities.
Whitfield has held several senior
roles at government departments
in Wellington, but moved
back to Christchurch after more
than two decades away to be
closer to her family.
“It’s just been about working
for clients that I want to work
for. Clients that I think make a
difference. That’s not always the
case when working for government
departments.”
Now she is the programme
lead for Crohn’s Colitis Cure, a
small charity supporting people
with inflammatory bowel disease.
She is also the founder of
Blindsided NZ, which offers support
to people with limited sight.
“It’s good to be doing things
not just for myself. You do get to
a point in life where you want to
give back. Having said that, I do
need to work,” said Whitfield.
Living on superannuation
alone would be “nearly impossible”
without selling her home
and significantly downsizing.
Whitfield would prefer to work
less and put more time into her
own charity.
But she says many people her
age need to work due to high
rates and insurance bills and the
general cost of living.
ON THE JOB: Chrissie Whitfield (left) and Christopher
Bailey are among the city’s 13,701 residents aged over 65
who are still working.
“I’ve found it very rare to find
people over-65 who are able to
retire with no issues.”
Christopher Bailey, 70, still
works part-time as a gardener.
The New Brighton resident
never anticipated working past
retirement age, but now finds
yard work a good way to keep
healthy. “It’s about the enjoyment
of it and feeling challenged as
well.”
Bailey is fulfilled in his work,
but also worries about the prospect
of living on superannuation
alone as he is not married.
“It’s going to be really hard
to survive on super. Rates and
power and insurance take up
one whole super payment at the
moment. I’ll have to dip into my
savings or maybe get a reverse
mortgage.” Bailey also believes
it can be difficult for over-65s
to gain employment when they
want it.
“Employers can worry about
how long of a career you can have
going forward. That can be very
difficult for some people. You
should look for the right employer
that’s going to accept you.”
LETTERS
I was disappointed to read The
Star article last week where city
councillors decided against
funding any celebration for
Canterbury’s 175 th anniversary. I
thought something was up when
ChristchurchNZ hadn’t said a
word about any functions, and
nothing from the city council.
It wasn’t the fault of the 800
settlers who came out on the first
four ships that any agreements
weren’t totally fulfilled by the
Canterbury Association. Yet not
funding any celebratory function
is actually denigrating the
contributions of these settlers to
early Christchurch and Canterbury.
Before 1848, the settlement
around the Avon River was
called Port Cooper Plains. There
was no area called Canterbury
until 1848 when the Canterbury
Association came to Lyttelton.
The Canterbury region was then
named, and the main settlement
called Christchurch. Christchurch
became the first city in New
Zealand by royal charter.
Perhaps if the city councillors
and council don’t want to
acknowledge the contribution of
these early settlers, and the role
of the Canterbury Association in
naming the region, then possibly
they should give serious thought
to the upcoming election, which
is for the ‘Christchurch’ City
Council.
If they are so concerned about
all the of above, perhaps they
should go back 177 years and
resume the name Port Cooper
Plains and contest the upcoming
elections as the Port Cooper city
council elections.
It is hard not to be pretty
disheartened by the latest turn of
events, and hard to be interested
in the upcoming CCC elections.
Stadium nickname
As the general manager of the
Ramada Hotel, I have had a frontrow
view of the new stadium’s
construction.
As a keen trail runner, I often
stop in the Port Hills to admire its
size and design. Throughout 2024,
I frequently referred to it as “The
Bird’s Nest” or “The Cage” among
my running group.
Recently, I noticed the stadium
looked quite different due to the
new cladding installed on the
southern side. It now reminds me
more of a “Kete Basket,” “Wicker
Latest Canterbury news at starnews.co.nz
recognised; stadium nicknames emerge
Basket,” or “Picnic Basket”.
The stadium is certainly impressive,
and I believe a nickname
will emerge organically in time.
-James Butler
After looking at my dartboard I
think we should call the new stadium
“Bullseye”, as the Bullseye is
red and black.
-Chris Leonard
I believe “The Tapestry” is
a great nickname for the new
stadium. To me, it resembles
the structure of the fabric with
definitive outlines which have
the potential to be filled in or not,
according to the artistic interpretation
of the artist.
- Margaret Dwan, Edgeware
My suggestion for the stadium
nickname is “The Spider’s Nest”.
- Hamish Craig
My choice for a new stadium
name is “The Lanai”. I chose
this name because the structure
looks like a cover for a pool, but it
could also be a cover for a rugby
stadium?
- Gay Moore
I’m probably showing my age,
but as I drive down Barbadoes
St or along Ferry Rd, when I see
the magnificent new stadium, I
think of the scene at the end of
Steven Spielberg’s 1977 movie
Close Encounters of the Third Kind
when the mothership descends to
Earth.
I suspect this will be even more
so when there is a night-time
event on at the stadium and it is
all lit up with thousands of people
(and if it played the music, the
picture would be complete).
So, I think “The Mothership”
is a good nickname for the new
stadium, particularly as it will also
be the nursery for so many young
Crusaders who will continue the
fine Canterbury tradition of going
on to be All Blacks.
- Mark Brown, Northwood
I have heard it called “The
Pavlova” recently; I myself
consider it resembles the white
fungi with all the hollows you see
out in the bush, so my nickname
is “Fungi”.
1900s – THE CATHOLIC CATHEDRAL
For more than a century,
the Cathedral of the Blessed
Sacrament on Barbados St
was held up as one of the
finest examples of church
architecture in Australasia.
Writer George Bernard Shaw,
visiting in 1934, compared the
cathedral ‘by the gasworks’
to the work of great Italian
renaissance architect Filippo
Brunelleschi.
The cathedral’s foundation
stone was laid on February 10,
1901. It was opened four years
later on February 12, 1905.
Francis William Petre designed
the basilica-style building.
Petre had earned the nickname
‘Lord Concrete’ because
he was one of the first New
Zealand architects to work with
it. He also designed cathedrals
in Dunedin and Wellington.
Before construction could
begin, the existing church had
to be moved 400ft (122m) up
the road – the largest building
to be moved in the country.
Three traction engines were
used in what the Weekly Press
(June 6, 1900) described as “a
task of no light order”.
The Blessed Sacrament was
built by J and W Jamieson
and measured 64m long and
32m wide, with a 41m dome.
Christchurch Libraries said it
required more than 3396m3
of Oamaru stone, 560m3 of
Mount Somers stone, 113m3 of
concrete and 88 tonnes of steel.
When money ran low, NZ
Premier Richard Seddon
pushed a special bill through
Parliament so the bishop could
take out a loan on behalf of the
Roman Catholic Diocese to
finish the project. The final cost
was £52,213.
Repairs were undertaken in
1970, and seismic strengthening
carried out in 2004. The
cathedral was closed for more
strengthening after the September
2010 earthquake. However,
it was significantly damaged in
the February 2011 quake.
Eight years later, Catholic
bishop Paul Martin said the
building was too expensive
to restore and would be
demolished. A replacement will
be constructed on the old site.
Sizzling science behind professor’s
• By Daniel Alvey
NAME A PLANT and Associate
Professor Tim Curran and his
team have probably burnt it in the
name of science.
The Lincoln University ecologist
has been leading research into
low-flammable plants for the past
12 years, leading to the creation of
the Plant Flammability Directory,
which now has more than 470
plants listed.
To test the plants, Curran built
a plant barbecue which uses a
propane torch to burn samples.
“ We’ve worked out it’s well over
5000 samples (of plants) we’ve
burned,” Curran said.
While it may
seem as simple
as just putting a
blowtorch on the
plants, Curran
explained there is
a bit more to the
process.
“We’re preheating
that sample
for two minutes
Tim
Curran
to dry out the sample a bit further
and volatilise some of the chemicals
the plant has.
“Both of those things mimic an
oncoming firefront.”
After preheating, the samples
are blow-torched for 10 seconds,
after which more measurements
are taken including, the maximum
temperature reached, how long the
plant burns once the blowtorch is
off, and the amount of the sample
left unburnt.
Curran said New Zealand’s
weather is changing to be more
conducive to fire.
“The predictions, particularly
for the eastern parts of New Zealand,
are looking quite dire. We’re
– Associate Professor
Tim Curran
going to get drier landscapes,
windier landscapes and lower
humidity.”
Curran said the list has been
used by the likes of Christchurch
City Council to develop green fire
breaks on the Port Hills. The fire
breaks are strips of low-flammability
plants strategically established
across the landscape.
Curran and his team are now
looking at ‘fighting fire with
food’ – how green fire belts can be
utilised on farms by using crops to
halt the spread of fire.
“ We’ve got a wider list that we’re
working through publication at
the moment which includes a wide
range of crop and pasture species.
“So with the idea being that
you’d actually be able to have a
really good think about how agricultural
landscapes are designed
from a fire mitigation point of
view,” he said.
Curran said it could lead to
farmers planting particular crops
in certain locations to be used as
green fire breaks, making them
multipurpose.
“ You can start to actually
have low flammable green fire
breaks playing a really important
multinational role across the
landscape and that I think is where
we’ll get most bang for our buck
and get most people.”
While not a “silver bullet”
Curran said green fire breaks
could be used among a number
of the fire mitigation methods.
As part of the research, Curran
said there were also some
surprises.
“We’ve found that some of our
native species are really highly
flammable.
“One of the really surprising
things for us was silver beech
which is a very flammable species
which we weren’t expecting
because that’s found in the wetter
rain forests.”
The plant flammability list
is the result of a collaboration
between Curran and Auckland
University Professor George
Perry, with help from three
postdoctoral scholars – Dr Sarah
Wyse, Dr Josep Padulles Cubino
and Dr Azhar Alam, four PhD
students Dr Azhar Alam, Dr
Xinglei Cui, Dr Niger Sultana
and Dr Shanta Budha-Magar,
several masters and honours students,
and many undergraduate
students, summer scholars and
international interns.
Said Curran: “It’s been a real
privilege to be working with such
a cool group on a project that’s
now getting out there in the
public’s hands, and the public can
use the information that we’ve
been producing.”
What you can do at your own home
Creating what is known as a defensible space is one of the
key things that can be done to protect your home from
wild fires. The space is made up of two zones.
Zone one – 0-10m
around the house:
• Keep grass short
• Keep gutters and decks
clear of dead leaves, debris and pine needles
• Remove highly flammable plants
• Store things such as firewood well away from the house.
Zone two – 10-30m
around the house:
• Reduce or move trees so they are not touching
• Prune branches up to 2m from the ground.
The ease of running
The training programme you have followed has
allowed for a gradual increase in fitness. Generally
you should cope comfortably with the increase
in mileage and intensity. If you are struggling it
can be because of an inefficient or poor running
technique. The best way to run is with an upright
body position. That might sound self-evident
but it is not infrequent that I see people running
stooped forwards or leaning back too far. You
achieve an upright body position by pushing your
pelvis and chest slightly forward with your neck
and head nicely aligned with your spine. Keep
your stride short so you land under your body
rather than ahead of it. Over striding is the most
common mistake made by runners of all levels.
To prevent over striding keep your stride short
and try and land on your mid-foot rather than
on your heel. Once you start running you can
introduce a slight “total body” forward lean (so
not just the upper torso). This body position will
give you the added benefit of a gentle forward
pull by the forces of gravity. In a previous article
I mentioned the importance of rhythm and that
is easier achieved with a shorter stride. Stay low
to the ground to minimise the forces of impact.
Have your arms relaxed; bend elbows with hands
moving up and down in front of your chest
dictating the rhythm of your legs.
To achieve this goal you
need to develop some
awareness around the
basic requirements of
exercising for health and
fitness. First and foremost
this has to do with 3 key
principles:
1. How often do you train?
To improve your level of health and
fitness you will need to aim for 4 sessions
per week. 2 or 3 sessions per week will only
maintain what you have and 1 session per
week is definitely not sufficient.
2. How long are your sessions? The duration
of your sessions will generally build towards
between 30 and 50 minutes with one longer
session of 60-120 minutes.
3. What is the right intensity to train at? The
good thing about the programme is that all
your runs will be done at submaximal pace,
also called conversation pace. That means a
pace where you can still talk. If you can’t talk
you are going too fast and you are likely to
come to a grinding halt sooner or later.
This programme and accompanying information are written
as a guide only. If you are concerned about your health at
any stage please undergo a health check with your GP.
TIP oF The weeK
If you are hoping to achieve some weight
loss as part of your programme this is the
time that you should see a shift in your
weight. One of the tricky things regarding
weight loss through exercise is that any
loss of fat can be offset by an increase in
muscle bulk. As muscle tissue is heavier
than fat a net gain in weight can be the
result in the short term for some people.
So if you have not lost weight and you have
kept to a healthy diet, don’t despair as this
might be the main reason. Your own unique
response to your exercise regime will decide
when you will start to lose weight and how
much you will lose. The good news is that
the health benefits from a regular exercise
programme are still the same, regardless of
the amount of weight you lose (or not).
Young Aussie muscle recruited in
bid to turn club’s fortunes around
• By Sam Coughlan
CHRISTCHURCH has turned
to three Australian imports to
bolster its team ahead of the
Metro rugby season – including
one notable name.
South Australian Owen Potter,
21, New-South Welshman Felix
Harvison, 18, and Queenslander
Brendan Thorn, 21, have joined
MENTOR: The trio cite former
the club for 2025.
Crusaders and All Blacks
Thorn is the son of former All
hooker Mark Hammett,
Black Brad Thorn, who donned
Christchurch’s director of
the black jersey 59 times and also
rugby, as a big part of why
made 92 appearances for the Crusaders
between 2001 and 2011.
they came to the club.
Brad Thorn also had a lengthy
rugby league career, playing 200
times for the Brisbane Broncos
and representing Queensland in
11 State of Origin games, as well
as three tests for Australia.
Brendan joins Christchurch
Sisson said he hoped to have
his team solidified in the top half
of the table within three seasons.
“They’ll have highs and lows in
that top part, but the long-term
goal is to not be saying we want
to make top six, it’s knowing
after playing club rugby in Nelson
that we’re always going to make
last year, before returning to
IMPACT: Owen Potter, Felix Harvison, and Brendan Thorn have joined Christchurch for 2025.
top six. It just depends on where
PHOTOS: GEOFF SLOAN
Queensland to stay with his parents
in the six we’re going to end up.
and recover from injury over
the off-season.
He said his father’s influence
was huge.
“ He’s always comforted me
through – always had my back,
backed me up in my abilities to
play,” he said.
“I’ve always felt pretty
confident around my footy.”
The Australian recruits all play
in the forward pack – Harvison
and Thorn in the front row and
Potter at loose forward.
Potter is a bit of a journeyman
– growing up in Adelaide and
playing for Woodville, he’s also
turned out for clubs in Canberra
and Darwin.
He said playing in New Zealand
had long been a goal.
“ It’s the best thing you can put
on your rugby resume.”
the winning try from a charged
down kick in the final.
Unusually for an Australian,
he dreams of playing in black.
“ My grandfather’s originally
from Timaru, so I’ve always
seen the appeal of New Zealand
rugby,” he said.
“It’s always been an aspiration
to maybe make a rep team over
here, even the All Blacks.
“New Zealand’s obviously the
best at rugby, and you want to
learn from the best.”
New head coach Bevan Sisson
said their build and skills would
be beneficial.
“They’ve been excellent.
Obviously they bring a fresh
do, not just gym size, but just to
become young men, really.”
A big reason behind all three
joining Christchurch is the presence
of the club’s new director of
rugby, former Crusaders and All
Blacks hooker Mark Hammett.
Hammett has coached the
Hurricanes, Highlanders and
Sunwolves in Super Rugby and
most recently oversaw St Thomas
of Canterbury College’s first XV.
“ Two weeks of training so far
and I’ve learnt so much already
from him,” Potter said.
“To be able to come and train
under him, it’s a bit surreal.”
The trio will boost a
Christchurch side that has won
“ Our main goal (this year) is
to get them to really believe in
the future for themselves, that
we can be a good team if we can
stay together, and ride out the
tough days, because there will
be some teams that will do a job
on us, just because they’ve got
better players.
“But if we can stay in the fight
for the close games, and get a few
go our way, that’s what we want.”
Christchurch has also picked
up fringe Crusaders Hunter
Morrison, a lock from Hawke’s
Bay, and Waikato pair Xavier
Saifoloi (loose forward) and Aki
Tuivailala (centre). Sisson said
he doesn’t expect to see much of
Harvison is in his first year look about the group.
just two games in the last two them, with representative duties
NEW FACE: Bevan Sisson is out of Sydney’s Shore School – “ They’re not ridiculously big, years, last making the playoffs getting in the way.
Christchurch’s new premier where he won the school’s first we’ve got bigger guys in the in 2022, with Sisson replacing The Metro rugby season starts
BISHOPDALE’S tennis protégé
Aliyah Daly’s success at a national
competition leaders Elmwood in
the last round of women’s premier
Daly, ranked second in New
Julian Daly, Bishopdale’s
manager and Daly’s father, says although
Aliyah is not available this
the team will include
its regulars Juliette Ma, Marija
Heroics in
vain as finals
race tightens
• By Sam Coughlan
STRONG individual performances
in losing causes headlined the
sixth round of the Christchurch
Metro one-day premiership.
Old Boys’ Lakshay Mehra took
6/15 as his side bowled East Shirley
out for 135 – only Timothy Hampton-Matehe
offering any resistance
with 76 – before Old Boys were all
out for just 99 in response.
Mehra’s figures were the best
in the competition since Hunter
Rowe took 8/38 for Heathcote in
2022.
Sydenham’s Ryan Wallace (120
not out) and Aarush Bhagwat (102)
peeled off centuries against Burnside
as their side tallied 256/3 after
being 2/2 early – only to see Burnside
chase it down comfortably.
Heathcote beat Riccarton by six
wickets and Lancaster Park beat St
Albans by three wickets.
Lancaster Park and Burnside
are assured of finals spots – but
just five points separate Old Boys
(38), St Albans (37) and Heathcote
(33) with one round left. They will
play Sydenham, East Shirley and
Burnside respectively with only
two to progress. The weekend’s
other match is between Lancaster
Park and Riccarton.
All matches will start at 10.30am
on Saturday.
Cricketers Matt Boyle and Cole
again from 2002. Northern won
its maiden title in 2007, defeating
Thursday February 13 2025 The Star 23
Ioniq 5 N delivers electrifying performance
HYUNDAI HAVE added new
super power to the ranks of their
high performance N portfolio, in
the form of the Ioniq 5 N EV –
the fastest Hyundai ever.
This car is a real circuit breaker
– smashing records at some of
Europe’s toughest racetracks.
Ioniq 5 N is one tough supercar
with a monocoque-strengthened
body to support its highperformance
capability.
Aerodynamic enhancements
including wheel deflectors, side
skirts, a rear diffuser, and a series
of under covers that extend
over the most of the vehicle’s
underbody reduce drag and add
downforce.
The Ioniq 5 N design team
have fashioned an eye-catching
vehicle. It starts with a striking
side profile underpinned by
N-exclusive lightweight 21-inch
forged alloy wheels shod with
high-performance 275/35R21
Pirelli tyres – 20mm wider than
those of the regular Ioniq 5.
You are reminded almost
every time you make a tight lowspeed
turn on smooth bitumen
surfaces where these super-size
tyres growl and grab at the road
surface.
Motoring with Bob Nettleton
It all seems a bit out of
character in a $134,995 car that
should be all polish and poise –
and for the most part it is.
A rear spoiler increases the
length of the car by 100mm
over the standard Ioniq 5,
and features a motorsportinspired
integrated triangular
high-mount stoplight. The rear
treatment is completed with an
EV N-exclusive luminous orange
strip.
Dynamic design features
include N-exclusive bumpers,
wheel arch extensions plus a rear
spoiler. This theme continues
inside the cabin with N-Light
sports front seats, steering wheel,
console with lateral support,
pedals and footrest. The colour
palate range includes the N
signature Performance Blue, the
chosen hue for the test vehicle.
User-selectable sounds give
the driver aural feedback
to accompany powertrain
performance based on rpm,
speed, torque and accelerator
position.
All-wheel drive is essential to
manage the Ioniq 5 N’s 448kW
and 770Nm EV powertrain. N
Grin Boost unleashes an extra
30kW maximum power when
the driver hits the red button
on the steering wheel. However,
the extra thrust is short lived
– in fact only 10 seconds of
hyper boost is offered. It can be
reactivated after a 10-second
pause with another push of the
red button.
This EV power train has
multiple personalities ranging
from easygoing and smooth for
the everyday driver, to fast, fun
and devilishly quick over twisty
back roads.
Smooth and incredibly
potent, the Ioniq 5 N mounts
a compelling argument that
includes a 3.4 second 0-100km/h
sprint time, if you are in search
of EV for performance from
another stratosphere.
With no engine noise, you tend
to notice almost every decibel of
wind and road noise at highway
speeds, and on long road trips it
does become a little tiring.
Riding on a mega size
3000mm wheelbase provides a
huge cabin area with exceptional
passenger and load space. A
moveable centre console can
slide back by up to 140mm.
This, plus the flat floor where
the batteries are stored, are the
keys to a passenger compartment
with wide-open spaces to burn.
Electronically adjustable
front seats recline, creating a
weightless feeling when you sit in
them – all a bit surreal, but super
comfy to sit in. A 30 per cent
Rating out of 10: Performance 9; Handling 9; Build Quality
8; Comfort 6; Space 9; Styling 8; Value for money 7; Safety -
ANCAP 5-star crash test rating.
Overall points out of 10: 8.5
reduction in the thickness of the
front seats liberates more room
for rear seat occupants.
Once behind the wheel you
get to wrap your mitts around
an N-exclusive semi-perforated
leather steering wheel that has
been sized and sculpted for
extended track use, and features
intuitively placed buttons for the
various drive modes.
The N-Light sports front seats
with heating and ventilation
blend both comfort and
exceptional support. Adding
a distinctive yet classy touch
to the interior is the premium
black Alcantara suede and
natural leather seats. These look
impressive with N-exclusive
Performance Blue stitching, that
extends to the steering wheel,
crash pad, first-row door trims
and armrests.
Collectively, all these elements
work remarkably well to bring
special ambience to the cabin
that a vehicle of this highperformance
stature deserves.
There’s an impressive arsenal
of safety kit, some of which
is based on camera image
recognition. Parking collision
avoidance assist helps prevent
low-speed collisions with
pedestrians or obstacles when
driving up to 10km/h.
A high-definition camera
and ultrasonic sensors detect
obstacles, with the system
warning the driver with visual
and audible alerts. The vehicle’s
smart key enhances security by
protecting against wireless key
hacking. Meanwhile wireless
smartphone connectivity
supports Android Auto and
Apple CarPlay.
The handling lives up to
the hype that preceded the
arrival of Ioniq 5 N with fully
variable front and rear torque
distribution the driver can
adjust to 11 levels.
The e-LSD (electronic limitedslip
differential) at the rear axle
is the cornerstone of the vehicle’s
superior cornering performance
and control. Additional wheel
sensors and broader damping
ranges with increased damper
size, broadens the overall
suspension tuning capacity.
This hefty vehicle with its
wide stance locks itself down
confidently on the road during
brisk cornering. The low-speed
ride is a bit of bruiser but
that’s to be expected from a
vehicle that’s laser-focused on
performance.
If it’s a comfy well cushioned
ride you are seeking, you have
landed on the wrong vehicle and
would be better to detour to the
more affordable Ioniq 5. It’s an
engaging and enjoyable drive
but with that extra overlay of
ride comfort.
For the uncompromising
road-holding demanded for an
EV excitement machine, the
Ioniq 5 N’s suspension is tuned
to perfection.
