A NEW shopping centre with 

a Mitre 10 Mega and up to 28 

other stores has been given the 

go-ahead for the city’s north. 

The city council has issued 

resource consent for the 2.5ha 

development on Prestons Rd in 

Marshland. 

The resource consent application 

for the commercial-zoned 

land was not publicly notified. 

The Mitre 10 Mega will 

cover 1.1ha and include a drivethrough 

trade area and garden 

centre. 

The other shops, including 

hospitality outlets, retailers, 

medical facilities or professional 

offices, will range in size 

from 100m² to 290m². 

About 375 car parks are also

but was expected to be around

It comes as work on the nearby 

Homebase shopping centre on 

Marshland Rd in Shirley continues 

to make progress. 

Once finished, Homebase 

will become the largest outdoor 

retail centre in Christchurch. The 

developers estimate stage one 

of the Homebase project will be 

completed by the middle of this 

year.

Future of 

beloved 

oak trees 

remains 

uncertain

RESIDENTS IN Shirley are yet 

to have a definitive answer on 

the removal of oak trees after a 

community meeting last week. 

The tall trees, which are estimated 

to be about 75-years-old, create a 

canopy over the street. 

The city council plan is to fell 17 

trees on Emmett St. Fourteen will 

be removed “due to non-compliance” 

and three “due to other safety 

concerns”. Three others will be 

removed on Riselaw St, which runs 

off Emmett St. 

Bec Roper-Gee of the Shirley 

Village Project said the meeting, 

attended by 30 people, was organised 

by the community and was 

a chance for council to hear their 

views. 

“There was a range of views, diversity 

of voices – and to have council 

front up and listen was great. 

“We’re still questioning about 

going forward and the processes 

that the community wants to be 

involved in.” 

Roper-Gee said three trees were 

unhealthy and their fate was sealed. 

“Some trees have to go, that is a 

certainty.” 

Emmett St resident Emma 

McGurk said there was a “grey 

area” about what alternate options 

there were if the trees were felled 

and whether they could be used in 

community projects.

Windbreaks now 

back in place at 

dog rehab park

CANINE NEUROPARK has been 

restored thanks to the work of one 

of its members. 

Thieves removed 40 metres 

of windbreak material from the 

NeuroPark Social rehab facility on 

New Brighton Rd on February 2. 

The windbreaks are a vital tool in 

helping rehabilitate dogs in a safe 

place. 

Canine NeuroPark Trust has 

more than 400 active members, 

who can book to use its New 

Brighton Rd and Morganwood St, 

Bexley, facilities. 

The parks cater for dogs 

who have had surgery or 

musculoskeletal problems, or 

have had negative experiences like 

abuse, which makes them unable 

to use regular dog parks. 

Rebecca Herbison said the rehab 

park is a sanctuary for her threeyear-old 

American Bulldog Sweetpea. 

She was happy to help set up 

the new windbreak, made out of 

material purchased by the trust. 

“I don’t know what we would do 

without (the park) for her. It is lifechanging,” 

Herbison said. 

“We wouldn’t have the outlet 

anywhere else.”

“It is a happy coincidence we live 

five minutes away or else the only 

other option is to hire out a paddock 

at my friend’s farm.”

windbreaker material when they 

are at Neuropark Social, I would 

have had to reinstall it anyway, but 

for me it shows great appreciation 

that members offered to give their 

time to do that.” 

Herbison said using both the 

Bexley and New Brighton NeuroPark 

facilities meant Sweetpea 

was now moving forward with her 

rehabilitation. 

“It’s a super important step in her 

training – NeuroPark allows her to 

safely observe other dogs while in a 

fenced area. 

“Both locations are a huge 

resource for us in her rehabilitation 

journey, and I genuinely don’t 

think we would have been able 

to make the progress we’ve made 

without it. 

“It is her favourite place in the 

world.”

ARIO’S THREE-wheel 

scooters have hit the streets of 

Christchurch, replacing the 

Neuron e-scooter brand. 

Neuron failed to get its license 

renewed in the city council’s 

tender process to choose two 

city-wide operators. 

Priority was given to companies 

able to increase rider 

numbers and meet tougher 

new standards for safety and 

security, using monitoring and 

technology. 

The city’s first ride-share 

scooter operator, Lime, successfully 

had their contract renewed 

from January 31. 

With two wheels at the front 

and one at the rear, Ario claims 

its scooters are more stable 

than the two-wheeled models, 

improving balance and overall 

control. 

Ario already operates e-scooters 

on the streets of Auckland, 

and says it has employed a local 

workforce to manage its daily 

operations across Christchurch.

The shops at the eastern end of Brighton Mall next to the 

Wave Bar have been completely demolished. It comes as the 

old bar is also in the process of being torn down. The work 

is part of the shopping centre’s long-awaited revitalisation. 

Martini Investments is spearheading the project, buying up 

12 properties to create a new hospitality, retail, market, and 

entertainment hub dubbed ‘Pierside’. The first stage will 

include a boardwalk-style lane way and an indoor-outdoor 

hub with retail and hospitality outlets. The demolition crew 

started work at the site two weeks ago and it is expected to 

be cleared within a few weeks. Local brewery Southpaw will 

be Pierside’s first tenant and is currently setting up in the 

restored former Dowsons Shoes shop next to the site. They are 

aiming to open a brew bar by the end of the year.

Nigel Slater rustles up scorched 

peppers in herby olive oil for 

summer days, followed by 

refreshing lemon curd 

Roast red peppers with chickpeas 

and basil oil 

Serves 2 as a main dish, 

4 with other dishes 

Ingredients 

750g large red peppers 

A little olive oil 

150g canned or bottled chickpeas 

For the oil: 

50g basil (leaves and stems) 

A small clove of garlic, peeled 

100ml olive oil 

2 Tbsp water 

A pinch of caster sugar 

A few drops of lemon juice 

Method 

• Preheat oven to 200degC. 

• Cut the peppers in half from stalk to tip 

then pull out and discard the core, seeds and 

stem. 

• Put the peppers cut-side up in a roasting 

tin, then moisten with a little olive oil – a 

couple of tablespoons should be enough. 

• Roast the peppers for about an hour till 

their skins are puffed and, here and there, 

blackened by the heat of the oven. 

• Remove the tin from the oven and place 

a tea towel or plastic bag over the top to 

encourage the peppers to steam as they cool. 

It will make them easier to skin. 

• Put the basil leaves and stems into a 

blender or food processor and blitz to a fine 

paste with the garlic. Pour in the olive oil 

and the water, a little at time, to give you a 

sloppy, deep-green paste. 

• Season with a little salt, a tiny pinch of 

sugar and a squeeze of lemon juice. At this 

point the flavour will be quite robust and 

peppery. 

• Drain and rinse the chickpeas and add 

them to the dressing. 

• Peel the skins from the peppers and 

discard, placing the peppers in a mixing 

bowl, then add the dressing and chickpeas. 

Include any roasting juice from the tin, 

however meagre – it will be sweet and 

intensely caramelised. 

• Toss gently to lightly coat the peppers. 

The sweetness of the roasted peppers will 

soften the pepperiness of the dressing. 

• Transfer to a serving dish. 

Lemon and 

raspberry squares 

Serves 12 

Ingredients 

For the pastry: 

200g butter 

100g caster sugar 

175g plain flour 

100g cornflour 

For the filling: 

Finely grated zest of 2 lemons 

200ml lemon juice 

200g caster sugar 

100g butter 

4 eggs 

2 egg yolks 

To finish: 

A peach 

250g raspberries 

Rose petals (optional) 

You will need a 24×30cm baking tin lined 

with baking parchment. 

Method 

• Make the pastry crust: preheat the oven 

to 180degC. Put the butter into the bowl of a 

food mixer, add the caster sugar and cream 

them (using the flat paddle beater) till light 

and fluffy then add the flour and cornflour. 

Mix to a soft dough. 

• Tip the dough into the lined baking tin 

and press it down gently until you have filled 

the base. Take care not to compact it. 

• Bake for 25 minutes till pale-biscuit 

coloured, then remove from the oven. 

• Put the lemon zest and juice, sugar and 

butter, cut into cubes, into a heatproof bowl. 

Place over a pan of simmering water, making 

sure that the bowl fits neatly into the top of 

the pan and the bottom of the basin doesn’t 

touch the water. 

• Stir with a whisk until the butter has 

melted. 

• Mix the eggs and egg yolks lightly with 

a fork, then stir into the lemon mixture. Let 

the curd cook, stirring regularly, for about 

20 minutes, until it is thick. You need a stiff 

curd here. 

• Keep the heat low to moderate and stir 

intermittently. 

• Remove from the heat and stir 

occasionally as it cools. Smooth the curd 

over the shortbread, taking it right up to the 

edge of the tin. 

• Leave to set in the fridge, covered, for 2-3 

hours, till firm. 

• Halve, stone and slice the peach into 12 

thin pieces. 

• Cut the tart into 12 and place a slice of 

peach and a raspberry on each. If you wish, 

a few rose petals too on each.

POOLS CLOSE for two months 

for maintenance From Monday 17 

February the New Brighton Hot Pools are 

temporarily closing their doors while they 

carry out scheduled maintenance work. 

This is part of a two-yearly programme to 

ensure the facility is fit for purpose. 

He Puna Taimoana is expected to reopen 

by mid-April 2025, with the re-opening 

date scheduled to be confirmed by the end 

of March. 

Coffee lovers don’t panic! Saturdays Café 

will continue trading during the closure 

period. Check the café’s website for opening 

hours. 

Bookings are unavailable for the closure 

period and will become available once the 

reopening date has been confirmed. 

As a result of the inconvenience, the 

pools are automatically extending current 

memberships, and 10 visit concessions 

passes by eight weeks. Gift vouchers, credits 

and on-hold bookings due to expire during 

the closure period will also be honoured for 

an additional eight weeks once the facility 

reopens.
