Artist pays homage to
priceless native birds
• By Kees Chalmers
CELEBRATED OIL painter
and conservationist Anna
Gibbs is using her work to
advocate for the protection of
native birds.
Her debut solo exhibition,
South Island Songs, is a
collection of oil paintings
where Gibbs blends techniques
of glazing with fair-mined
24-carat gold leaf to depict
New Zealand’s native bird life,
a technique derived from the
Dutch masters.
“When we see things like
gold, colours and jewels we
think of treasure and precious
and scarce things. For me, birds
are that so I’m trying to convey
that association,” she said.
Gibbs also aims to raise the
profile of the conservation work
that is being done to preserve
native bird populations.
South Island Songs has been
more than two years in the
making and was unveiled to the
public at Little River Gallery on
Friday.
Gibbs said the reception so
far has blown her away.
“Having put so much time
aside towards a project, it’s
really gratifying that I’ve had
such a great response.”
Gibbs said she was expecting
one or two paintings to sell on
the first day - but after an hour,
half had already been sold.
PLACE OF TRANQUILLITY: Le Bons Bay artist Anna Gibbs in her studio with paintings
for her debut solo exhibition.
“It was just insane and completely
overwhelming.”
Gibbs, 34, is originally a high
school teacher from London.
Even from the other side of the
world, she became fascinated
by New Zealand’s native birds
from the pictures and videos
sent by her parents, Jack and
Charlotte, who had moved to
Banks Peninsula from the UK.
Gibbs relocated to Le Bons
Bay with her husband, Stuart
Foster, four and a half years ago
and turned her artistic ambitions
into a reality by pursuing
painting full-time.
Club hopes
to take over
running of
Wharenui
complex
• By Jack Ward
THE WHARENUI Swimming
Club hopes to take over the
operation of the Wharenui Sports
Centre from the city council.
An information session on
Tuesday will shed light on the
council’s plans for the Elizabeth St
facility in Riccarton and how it will
complement the new Parakiore
Recreation and Sport Centre which
set to open at the end of the year in
the central city.
Club president Paula Quayle said
the club punches well above its
weight.
“The goal is to take over both
capital and operational matters (at
the Wharenui Sports Centre). We
will work alongside council as they
see the benefit in us staying open.”
It is a far cry from 2021, when
the city council was considering
shutting Wharenui when Parakiore
opens.
More than 150 submissions were
sent to the city council in favour of
Wharenui staying open.
In 2019, the average monthly
patronage of Wharenui was 8200.
In 2024 it was 42,580.
The resurgence in numbers
comes at the same time as Jen
Hooper’s tenure as general manager
of the recreation centre.
“I’ve been general manager for
five years, brought on by the committee
to reestablish the identity of
the pool,” Hooper said.
Bright future for swimming pool
•From page 1
“We cater to a lot of diversity
and the critical thing is knowing
your people, we have the
most transient community in
Riccarton.”
Hooper said the facility is
looking at ways to be more
sustainable, and solar is an
option.
“We look forward to exploring
solar power generation options
over the next 12
to 24 months.
“Power is one
of our largest
operational
costs other than
wages, and
our energy bill
exceeds $20,000
in winter.
“Any
operational
savings we can achieve will
Paula
Quayle
allow us to continue offering
our current programmes at an
affordable rate and add new
ones.”
Councillor for Riccarton Tyla
Harrison Hunt has been a strong
advocate for Wharenui.
“They are the lifeblood of
central Riccarton and do much
more than just run swimming
lessons, they have a long and
strong history in Riccarton in
providing an outlet for young
and old.”
At present, the agreement is
a month-by-month lease, with
the council planning to support
the facility through the current
financial year with a two-year
trial period following.
This is to ensure the operation
is able to be delivered. The
financial forecast developed by
the club during the trial period
requires an operational subsidy
of $100,000 in FY27 and $84,000
in FY28 from the city council.
Quayle said the club, which
is more than 100 years old, is a
factory of swimming talent with
Olympic representative
Taiko Torepe-Ormsby
representing New Zealand in
Paris last year.
“It is inspiring for the kids to
rub shoulders with people like
that and see them at the club.”
Looking to the future,
Quayle was optimistic at where
Wharenui is placed.
“We have come a long way in
the last five years financially and
we want to keep the good things
going.”
Old ‘attic’ art sought
for centre fundraiser
Artist turns advocate
to protect birds
• From page 1
Since then, she’s dedicated her
life to her art and through it,
the conservation of native birds.
Living on the peninsula, the
firsthand exposure to the sounds
and beauty of birds only grew her
passion.
“I think I was so interested in
this idea that there’s this completely
unique ecosystem that
evolved in New Zealand because
there weren’t mammals, there’s
just nowhere else like that,” said
Gibbs.
“If we don’t protect it, it will
just be lost permanently, totally
irrecoverable.”
Gibbs previously painted
kākāpō to raise awareness for the
Kākāpō Recovery fund. She won
the premium artist award 2023
at Auckland’s Art in the Park
exhibition for her piece, Kākāpō
in the Forest.
South Island Songs includes kea
and kōtuku paintings, and information
about the kea conservation
trust and the kōtuku nesting
site in Whataroa.
Over the course of the last
three and a half years, Gibbs has
developed a considerable online
presence, with over 100k followers
on Instagram. She posts reels
of her artistic processes and uses
it as a platform to champion native
birdlife.
She said seeing so many people
connect with her work has been
“incredible.”
“It gave me the confidence that
I needed to know this was the
right thing to do.”
South Island Songs will be on
until February 24.
IF YOU have unwanted artwork
in your home, Art from the Attic
could give it a second life.
Art from the Attic is an exhibition
organised by the Mt Pleasant
Community Centre to fundraise
for a louvered roof for its front
deck.
“It’s got a million dollar view
of the estuary, but either rain or
howling north-westerlies often
make it unusable, so we’re trying
to weather-proof it without
ruining the view,” said community
centre president Derek
McCullough.
The community centre is used
by about 1000 people a week.
When the deck becomes unusable
due to weather conditions
it limits their space, said Mc-
Cullough.
“It’s (the roof) making the most
of the amazing facility we already
have.”
With the building consent
approved, the community centre
now just needs the funds.
It has raised $25,000 so far from
two burlesque shows, grants from
various gaming trusts, donation
tins, raffles and farmers markets.
Still $75,000 shy of its
target, the centre is hoping Art in
the Attic will help get it
across the line.
UPCYCLED: Mt Pleasant Community Centre president
Derek McCullough with art donated for the fundraiser.
The centre is reaching out to
the Mt Pleasant community
to donate unwanted art to the
exhibition.
The idea was sparked after
association members discovered
old paintings while de-cluttering
their houses.
“We thought, let’s have a show
and see if anyone wants to buy it
or if anyone would be generous
enough to donate it,” said Mc-
Cullough.
The community centre has
received about 30 paintings
so far just from asking the
PHOTO: GEOFF SLOAN
association’s members.
“They have offered some
pretty substantial pieces of art,”
said McCullough.
How the art will be sold is still
to be finalised.
McCullough is appreciative
of the community’s support to
date.
• Art from the Attic will
be held on Saturday, April
12 from 9am-4pm at the
Mt Pleasant Community
Centre. To donate art,
Windbreaks now
back in place at
dog rehab park
• By Jack Ward
CANINE NEUROPARK has been
restored thanks to the work of one
of its members.
Thieves removed 40 metres
of windbreak material from the
NeuroPark Social rehab facility on
New Brighton Rd on February 2.
The windbreaks are a vital tool in
helping rehabilitate dogs in a safe
place.
Canine NeuroPark Trust has
more than 400 active members,
who can book to use its New
Brighton Rd and Morganwood St,
Bexley, facilities.
The parks cater for dogs
who have had surgery or
musculoskeletal problems, or
have had negative experiences like
abuse, which makes them unable
to use regular dog parks.
Rebecca Herbison said the rehab
park is a sanctuary for her threeyear-old
American Bulldog Sweetpea.
She was happy to help set up
the new windbreak, made out of
material purchased by the trust.
“I don’t know what we would do
without (the park) for her. It is lifechanging,”
Herbison said.
“We wouldn’t have the outlet
anywhere else.”
Herbison has been a Canine
past and it is the only place to have
her off-lead. It is super important,
especially for reactionary dogs.
“It is a happy coincidence we live
other option is to hire out a paddock
at my friend’s farm.”
Canine NeuroPark co-owner
windbreaker material when they
are at Neuropark Social, I would
have had to reinstall it anyway, but
for me it shows great appreciation
that members offered to give their
time to do that.”
Herbison said using both the
Bexley and New Brighton NeuroPark
facilities meant Sweetpea
was now moving forward with her
rehabilitation.
“It’s a super important step in her
training – NeuroPark allows her to
safely observe other dogs while in a
fenced area.
“Both locations are a huge
resource for us in her rehabilitation
journey, and I genuinely don’t
think we would have been able
to make the progress we’ve made
without it.
“It is her favourite place in the
world.”
ZOOMIES: Sweetpea in full stride at the Bexley site. Owner
Rebecca Herbison says the two NeuroPark sites are the only
places she feels comfortable letting Sweetpea off her lead.
Enviro Master helping
Cantabrians
Enviro Master has been helping
Cantabrians get the balance right when
it comes to choosing the perfect heat
pump or air conditioning system for
their home or office since 2002.
Their team of expert sales people,
qualified electricians, heating and
refrigeration engineers, help to supply
and install one of Christchurch’s
Panasonic, Mitsubishi Electric, Daikin
and Fujitsu. Because they have no
affiliation with any one brand, you can
be assured their advice on the benefits
and differences between each product is
unbiased.
They will recommend the most
energy-efficient and cost-effective system
for your individual situation, and will
have you regulating the heat in your
home or office in no time.
Nowadays, customers are often
wanting whole home solutions to be
able to maintain even temperatures
throughout the home both in Winter
and Summer. This can be achieved by
using ducted systems or multi systems
and Enviro Master are experts in
these systems.
Help is currently available with a
government subsidy offering 80 per cent
of the cost of a new heat pump up to
$3000 including GST.
The subsidy is part of the Warmer
Kiwi Homes initiative and is available
to Home owner/occupiers with a
Community Services Card, a SuperGold
combo card or who live in a low-income
area as determined by deciles 8-10 on
the New Zealand Deprivation Index.
To ensure you choose the right system
for your home or business, one of Enviro
Master’s experts will visit to assess your
individual situation, offer advice and
Savouring the delicious tastes of summer
Nigel Slater rustles
up scorched peppers
in herby olive oil for
summer days, followed
by refreshing lemon
curd
Roast red peppers with
chickpeas and basil oil
Serves 2 as a main dish,
4 with other dishes
Ingredients
750g large red peppers
A little olive oil
150g canned or bottled chickpeas
For the oil:
50g basil (leaves and stems)
A small clove of garlic, peeled
100ml olive oil
2 Tbsp water
A pinch of caster sugar
A few drops of lemon juice
Method
• Preheat oven to 200degC.
• Cut the peppers in half from
stalk to tip then pull out and
discard the core, seeds and stem.
• Put the peppers cut-side up
in a roasting tin, then moisten
with a little olive oil – a couple of
tablespoons should be enough.
• Roast the peppers for about an
hour till their skins are puffed and,
here and there, blackened by the
heat of the oven.
• Remove the tin from the oven
and place a tea towel or plastic
bag over the top to encourage the
peppers to steam as they cool. It
will make them easier to skin.
• Put the basil leaves and stems
into a blender or food processor
and blitz to a fine paste with the
garlic. Pour in the olive oil and the
water, a little at time, to give you a
sloppy, deep-green paste.
• Season with a little salt, a tiny
pinch of sugar and a squeeze of
lemon juice. At this point the
flavour will be quite robust and
peppery.
• Drain and rinse the chickpeas
and add them to the dressing.
• Peel the skins from the peppers
and discard, placing the peppers
in a mixing bowl, then add the
dressing and chickpeas. Include
any roasting juice from the tin,
however meagre – it will be sweet
and intensely caramelised.
• Toss gently to lightly coat the
peppers. The sweetness of the
roasted peppers will soften the
pepperiness of the dressing.
• Transfer to a serving dish.
Lemon and
raspberry squares
Serves 12
Ingredients
For the pastry:
200g butter
100g caster sugar
175g plain flour
100g cornflour
For the filling:
Finely grated zest of 2 lemons
200ml lemon juice
200g caster sugar
100g butter
4 eggs
2 egg yolks
To finish:
A peach
250g raspberries
Rose petals (optional)
You will need a 24×30cm baking
tin lined with baking parchment.
Method
• Make the pastry crust:
preheat the oven to 180degC.
Put the butter into the bowl of
a food mixer, add the caster
sugar and cream them (using
the flat paddle beater) till light
and fluffy then add the flour and
cornflour. Mix to a soft dough.
• Tip the dough into the lined
baking tin and press it down
gently until you have filled the
base. Take care not to compact
it.
• Bake for 25 minutes till palebiscuit
coloured, then remove
from the oven.
• Put the lemon zest and juice,
sugar and butter, cut into cubes,
into a heatproof bowl. Place
over a pan of simmering water,
making sure that the bowl fits
neatly into the top of the pan
and the bottom of the basin
doesn’t touch the water.
• Stir with a whisk until the
butter has melted.
• Mix the eggs and egg yolks
lightly with a fork, then stir into
the lemon mixture. Let the curd
cook, stirring regularly, for about
20 minutes, until it is thick. You
need a stiff curd here.
• Keep the heat low to
moderate and stir intermittently.
• Remove from the heat and
stir occasionally as it cools.
Smooth the curd over the
shortbread, taking it right up to
the edge of the tin.
• Leave to set in the fridge,
covered, for 2-3 hours, till firm.
• Halve, stone and slice the
peach into 12 thin pieces.
• Cut the tart into 12 and place
a slice of peach and a raspberry
on each. If you wish, a few rose
petals too on each.
