Swimming club hopes to take
over the running of Wharenui
• By Jack Ward
THE WHARENUI Swimming
Club hopes to take over the
operation of the Wharenui
Sports Centre from the city
council.
An information session on
Tuesday will shed light on the
council’s plans for the Elizabeth
St facility in Riccarton and how
it will complement the new
Parakiore Recreation and Sport
Centre which
set to open at
the end of the
year in the
central city.
Club
president
Paula Quayle
said the club
punches well
above its
weight.
Paula
Quayle
“The goal is to take over both
capital and operational matters
(at the Wharenui Sports
Centre). We will work alongside
council as they see the benefit
in us staying open.”
It is a far cry from 2021, when
the city council was considering
shutting Wharenui when
Parakiore opens.
More than 150 submissions
were sent to the city council
in favour of Wharenui staying
open.
In 2019, the average monthly
patronage of Wharenui was
8200. In 2024 it was 42,580.
The resurgence in
numbers comes at
the same time as Jen
Hooper’s tenure as
general manager of the
recreation centre.
“I’ve been general
manager for five years,
brought on by the committee
to reestablish the
Jen
Hooper
identity of the pool,” Hooper
said. “We cater to a lot of
diversity and the critical
thing is knowing your
people, we have the most
transient community in
Riccarton.”
Hooper said the facility
is looking at ways to
be more sustainable, and
solar is an option.
“We look forward to exploring
solar power generation
options over the next 12 to 24
months.
“Power is one of our largest
operational costs other than
wages, and our energy bill
exceeds $20,000 in winter.
“Any operational savings we
can achieve will allow us to
continue offering our current
programmes at an affordable
rate and add new ones.”
Councillor for Riccarton
Tyla Harrison Hunt has been a
strong advocate for Wharenui.
“They are the lifeblood of
central Riccarton and do much
more than just run swimming
lessons, they have a long and
strong history in Riccarton in
providing an outlet for young
and old.”
At present, the agreement is
a month-by-month lease, with
the council planning to support
the facility through the current
financial year with a two-year
trial period following. This is to
ensure the operation is able to
be delivered. The financial forecast
developed by the club during
the trial period requires an
operational subsidy of $100,000
in FY27 and $84,000 in FY28
from the city council.
Quayle said the club, which
is more than 100 years old, is
a factory of swimming talent
with Olympic representative
Taiko Torepe-Ormsby representing
New Zealand in Paris
last year. “It is inspiring for the
kids to rub shoulders with people
like that and see them at the
club.” Looking to the future,
Quayle was optimistic at where
Wharenui is placed.
“We have come a long way
in the last five years financially
and we want to keep the good
things going.”

Windbreaks now
back in place at
dog rehab park
• By Jack Ward
CANINE NEUROPARK has been
restored thanks to the work of one
of its members.
Thieves removed 40 metres
of windbreak material from the
NeuroPark Social rehab facility on
New Brighton Rd on February 2.
The windbreaks are a vital tool in
helping rehabilitate dogs in a safe
place.
Canine NeuroPark Trust has
more than 400 active members,
who can book to use its New
Brighton Rd and Morganwood St,
Bexley, facilities.
The parks cater for dogs
who have had surgery or
musculoskeletal problems, or
have had negative experiences like
abuse, which makes them unable
to use regular dog parks.
Rebecca Herbison said the rehab
park is a sanctuary for her threeyear-old
American Bulldog Sweetpea.
She was happy to help set up
the new windbreak, made out of
material purchased by the trust.
“I don’t know what we would do
without (the park) for her. It is lifechanging,”
Herbison said.
“We wouldn’t have the outlet
anywhere else.”
PUPPY LOVE: Rebecca
Herbison credits the two
NeuroPark sites for the
progress made with her
rescue dog Sweetpea’s
rehabilitation journey.
Herbison has been a Canine
NeuroPark member for two years
after adopting Sweetpea from
Christchurch Bull Breed Rescue in
Woolston.
“She has come from a traumatic
past and it is the only place to have
her off-lead. It is super important,
especially for reactionary dogs.
“It is a happy coincidence we live
five minutes away or else the only
other option is to hire out a paddock
at my friend’s farm.”
Canine NeuroPark co-owner
RESTORED: The windbreak webbing has been reinstalled at the Canine Neuropark Social
park on New Brighton Rd after thieves stole 40m of the material.
Bono Beeler said he appreciated
Herbison taking the time to give
back. “That’s ultimately good for
everyone,” Beeler said.
“After several DMs (direct
messages) that members liked the
windbreaker material when they
are at Neuropark Social, I would
have had to reinstall it anyway, but
for me it shows great appreciation
that members offered to give their
time to do that.”
Herbison said using both the
Bexley and New Brighton NeuroPark
facilities meant Sweetpea
was now moving forward with her
rehabilitation.
“It’s a super important step in her
training – NeuroPark allows her to
safely observe other dogs while in a
fenced area.
“Both locations are a huge
resource for us in her rehabilitation
journey, and I genuinely don’t
think we would have been able
to make the progress we’ve made
without it.
“It is her favourite place in the
world.”
ZOOMIES: Sweetpea in full stride at the Bexley site. Owner
Rebecca Herbison says the two NeuroPark sites are the only
places she feels comfortable letting Sweetpea off her lead.
A rookie’s day out with tramping
The Bishopdale
Tramping Club has
been operating
since 1985, with a
different walk around
Christchurch and
further afield every
Wednesday, combining
adventure and
conversation. Reporter
Jack Ward joined them
on their tramp up
Mt Alford
PHOTO: JACK WARD
WORD IS PASSED down that
we’ve found our spot for lunch.
I’m the youngest member
by a few decades, yet my lungs
are burning and my strength is
faltering.
Removing my pack, I sit down
for some much-needed respite.
Even though this is my first
tramp, I didn’t think it would
be so physically and mentally
demanding – a far cry from my
emotions a couple of hours
earlier.
Bright-eyed and full of excitement,
I had arrived at the Bishopdale
Mall car park.
I was greeted with smiles as I
boarded the bus.
President Jen Cato is unavailable
so it falls to vice-president
Graham Wood to welcome
everyone and run through the
schedule.
The bus is smaller today, a
COMPLETED: Jack, an honorary member of the Bishopdale
Tramping Club at the end of his first tramp. Despite his
exhaustion, the view of the Canterbury Plains from near the
summit of Mt Alford made it all worthwhile.
35-seater rather than the usual
50, but there’s still plenty of room
for the 31 aboard.
We set off and the first thing I
notice is the atmosphere.
It feels more like a school trip
than retirees setting off into the
backcountry.
Once our full compliment
has been gathered after a stop in
Yaldhurst, we get on the road.
I’m seated by newbie Brent
McConchie, who has been part of
the club for a couple of years.
He says he joined because
he enjoyed going on city tours
while overseas as a way to learn
about the culture and history of
a certain place over a couple of
hours. The club is a similar way
to get out and explore.
We take a pitstop in Rakaia. It
is a good time to stretch our legs.
Afterwards, everyone files
back onto the bus and I’m
seated next to Selwyn Maister,
unbeknownst to me, an Olympic
gold medallist.
I learned later that Selwyn and
his younger brother Barry were
part of the New Zealand men’s
hockey team that won gold at the
1976 Montreal Olympics.
The bus pulls into the Alford
Scenic Reserve car park, and we
disembark to grab our packs for
the tramp.
The group splits off into ‘standards’
and ‘alternates’.
Alternates do a smaller portion
of the same tramp at a more
leisurely pace.
I’m with the standards, our
first obstacle being the beech
forest of the Alford Scenic
Reserve.
The path winds up through the
dense bush.
In places, it is boggy under the
canopy of trees. Mud sticks to
boots and roots protrude from
the soil like fingers, waiting to
grab the unwary.
I file in behind Brent, who is
armed with a pair of secateurs,
clipping at any undergrowth that
presents a threat.
We take morning tea in a clearing
before continuing the climb.
The forest gives way to the high
country and more open terrain.
I take deeper breaths as my
lack of fitness starts to show (I
learn that new trampers walk a
couple of trips with the alternates
to judge fitness levels).
I ask Kate Wilton how they
manage these arduous adventures.
“Stamina. You have to do
the tramps to build up your
stamina.”
Kate has been part of the club
for eight-and-a-half years and at
75, is well and truly showing my
28-year-old self up.
“It’s not just a tramping club,”
she tells me.
I swivel on my sitting rock and
see our view.
Dave Bastin asks me how I’m
feeling before gesturing, “Not a
bad view, is it.”
The Canterbury Plains are laid
out like a picnic mat, the Port Hills
in the distance and beyond them a
glimpse of the sea – the hike now
all worth it.
Recharged, we start our return
journey.
In the forest, my legs pick up
some unwanted passengers –
bastard grass that hooks onto hair,
requiring a brisk brushing off.
That takes place at the car park.
I am relieved I made it – and
exhausted. With new footwear on,
I grab a seat next to Peter.
He gives the sage advice I
needed to hear at the start of the
day: “Don’t look up, you’ll always
be disappointed.”
At 76, Peter looks unfazed by the
day, occasionally sipping on his
water.
“I only lead the tramps I like,” he
says with a smile.
“Been part of this club for 14
years, Wednesday is tramping day.
“It is a good group to go with
and it is well organised and safety
conscious.”
There is significantly less chatter
on the way home as some have a
snooze and others enjoy the air
conditioning.
ALL PRESENT: The main group make time for a photo on the descent.
PHOTO: JACK WARD
We bid farewell to several
trampers at Yaldhurst before the
final stop.
Grabbing my gear, I say bye to
Graham and thank him for inviting
me along.
Witnessing the camaraderie
of the club is a testament to the
foundations it was built on.
Enviro Master helping
Cantabrians
Enviro Master has been helping
Cantabrians get the balance right when
it comes to choosing the perfect heat
pump or air conditioning system for
their home or office since 2002.
Their team of expert sales people,
qualified electricians, heating and
refrigeration engineers, help to supply
and install one of Christchurch’s
widest range of heat pumps including
Panasonic, Mitsubishi Electric, Daikin
and Fujitsu. Because they have no
affiliation with any one brand, you can
be assured their advice on the benefits
and differences between each product is
unbiased.
They will recommend the most
energy-efficient and cost-effective system
for your individual situation, and will
have you regulating the heat in your
home or office in no time.
Nowadays, customers are often
wanting whole home solutions to be
able to maintain even temperatures
throughout the home both in Winter
and Summer. This can be achieved by
using ducted systems or multi systems
and Enviro Master are experts in
designing, installing and commissioning
these systems.
Help is currently available with a
government subsidy offering 80 per cent
of the cost of a new heat pump up to
$3000 including GST.
The subsidy is part of the Warmer
Kiwi Homes initiative and is available
to Home owner/occupiers with a
Community Services Card, a SuperGold
combo card or who live in a low-income
area as determined by deciles 8-10 on
the New Zealand Deprivation Index.
The applicant’s home must also have
been built before 2008, have insulation
up to code (insulation subsidies also
available) and have no fixed heating
in any living area, such as an existing
operational heat pump or fireplace.
To ensure you choose the right system
for your home or business, one of Enviro
Master’s experts will visit to assess your
individual situation, offer advice and
answer any questions you may have.
This consultation is at no cost to the
customer and is always provided before a
heat pump is installed.
Anyone wondering about their
eligibility for a subsidised heat pump are
welcome to get in touch for details and
help with the application process.
Savouring the delicious tastes of summer
Nigel Slater rustles
up scorched peppers
in herby olive oil for
summer days, followed
by refreshing lemon
curd
Roast red peppers with
chickpeas and basil oil
Serves 2 as a main dish,
4 with other dishes
Ingredients
750g large red peppers
A little olive oil
150g canned or bottled chickpeas
For the oil:
50g basil (leaves and stems)
A small clove of garlic, peeled
100ml olive oil
2 Tbsp water
A pinch of caster sugar
A few drops of lemon juice
Method
• Preheat oven to 200degC.
• Cut the peppers in half from
stalk to tip then pull out and
discard the core, seeds and stem.
• Put the peppers cut-side up
in a roasting tin, then moisten
with a little olive oil – a couple of
tablespoons should be enough.
• Roast the peppers for about an
hour till their skins are puffed and,
here and there, blackened by the
heat of the oven.
• Remove the tin from the oven
and place a tea towel or plastic
bag over the top to encourage the
peppers to steam as they cool. It
will make them easier to skin.
• Put the basil leaves and stems
into a blender or food processor
and blitz to a fine paste with the
garlic. Pour in the olive oil and the
water, a little at time, to give you a
sloppy, deep-green paste.
• Season with a little salt, a tiny
pinch of sugar and a squeeze of
lemon juice. At this point the
flavour will be quite robust and
peppery.
• Drain and rinse the chickpeas
and add them to the dressing.
• Peel the skins from the peppers
and discard, placing the peppers
in a mixing bowl, then add the
dressing and chickpeas. Include
any roasting juice from the tin,
however meagre – it will be sweet
and intensely caramelised.
• Toss gently to lightly coat the
peppers. The sweetness of the
roasted peppers will soften the
pepperiness of the dressing.
• Transfer to a serving dish.
Lemon and
raspberry squares
Serves 12
Ingredients
For the pastry:
200g butter
100g caster sugar
175g plain flour
100g cornflour
For the filling:
Finely grated zest of 2 lemons
200ml lemon juice
200g caster sugar
100g butter
4 eggs
2 egg yolks
To finish:
A peach
250g raspberries
Rose petals (optional)
You will need a 24×30cm baking
tin lined with baking parchment.
Method
• Make the pastry crust:
preheat the oven to 180degC.
Put the butter into the bowl of
a food mixer, add the caster
sugar and cream them (using
the flat paddle beater) till light
and fluffy then add the flour and
cornflour. Mix to a soft dough.
• Tip the dough into the lined
baking tin and press it down
gently until you have filled the
base. Take care not to compact
it.
• Bake for 25 minutes till palebiscuit
coloured, then remove
from the oven.
• Put the lemon zest and juice,
sugar and butter, cut into cubes,
into a heatproof bowl. Place
over a pan of simmering water,
making sure that the bowl fits
neatly into the top of the pan
and the bottom of the basin
doesn’t touch the water.
• Stir with a whisk until the
butter has melted.
• Mix the eggs and egg yolks
lightly with a fork, then stir into
the lemon mixture. Let the curd
cook, stirring regularly, for about
20 minutes, until it is thick. You
need a stiff curd here.
• Keep the heat low to
moderate and stir intermittently.
• Remove from the heat and
stir occasionally as it cools.
Smooth the curd over the
shortbread, taking it right up to
the edge of the tin.
• Leave to set in the fridge,
covered, for 2-3 hours, till firm.
• Halve, stone and slice the
peach into 12 thin pieces.
• Cut the tart into 12 and place
a slice of peach and a raspberry
on each. If you wish, a few rose
petals too on each.
