Good afternoon and welcome back to Chigwell Construction Stadium for today’s
Barclays Women’s Super League match against Brighton & Hove Albion...
I’d like to welcome Dario
Vidošić, his staff and players to
east London for our game this
afternoon.
We’re really pleased to be back
at home in front of our supporters
today as we look to head into
the upcoming international break
on a high.
Since my last column, we
performed well against Liverpool
in a narrow defeat away from
home, but we struggled to take
the opportunities that we created
in the game. Then against Chelsea
in the Subway Women’s League
Cup semi-final, I thought the
players worked incredibly hard
against tough opposition and
we could have scored with the
opportunities that we created in
the second half.
Since then, we’ve had a ten-day
period without a game, which after
playing six games in three weeks
was very beneficial for players and
staff. It was good for everyone to
spend time away from the training
ground after such an intense
period, and it’s also allowed us to
work hard on the training pitches
in preparation for today against
Brighton.
We’re really proud as a Club to
have a record number of players
called up by their nations for the
upcoming international break.
It shows the progress that we
have made across the past 18
months with our recruitment and
highlights the development of
our players overall. We wish them
all well during their time away
on camp.
“WE’RE REALLY PLEASED
TO BE BACK AT HOME
IN FRONT OF OUR
SUPPORTERS TODAY AS WE
LOOK TO HEAD INTO THE
UPCOMING INTERNATIONAL
BREAK ON A HIGH”
Today’s fixture gives us an
opportunity to go into the
international break strongly. We
know that Brighton will provide
tough opposition, but we
know that if we play to our full
potential we can come away
with three points.
The crowd will be
incredibly important as
always, and I’d like to thank
those that have supported
us on our travels up to Liverpool
and across London to Chelsea in
recent weeks. As I said, we always
love being back at home because
we all really feel the support that
you give the team.

Good afternoon and welcome back to Chigwell Construction Stadium...
We’re really happy to be
back in action and play in
front of our home support
today.
As a team, we had a lot of
matches across January, so having
ten days since our last match has
allowed everyone some downtime
away from the pitch, which is
incredibly important.
It’s also allowed us to spend
a full week on the training pitch
to prepare for the game today.
We’ve done our homework on the
opposition, and we’ve also been
able to work on areas where we’ve
felt that we needed to improve, so
we’re in a good place heading into
today’s game.
We know that we’ve performed
reasonably well in our recent
matches, but we need to improve
by taking the opportunities that we
are creating and score some more
goals. Our aim today is to do that
and come away with some points
from the game.
“WE KNOW THAT WE’VE
PERFORMED REASONABLY
WELL IN OUR RECENT
MATCHES, BUT WE NEED TO
IMPROVE BY TAKING THE
OPPORTUNITIES THAT WE
ARE CREATING AND SCORE
SOME MORE GOALS”
Brighton will be a strong test for
us today. When we faced them
earlier this season, I thought ‘we
were unlucky not to come away
with anything from the game, and
we want to make sure that we get
points in front of a home crowd.
We all have the aim of heading
into the international break
strongly, so coming away with
three points today is the aim.
We’ll need the fans to cheer us
on to help us out on the pitch. I’d
like to thank those that travelled
with us up to Liverpool and across
London to Chelsea in our recent
games. Your support on the road is
massively appreciated.

Shekiera
MARTINEZ
‘Hey Shekiera, your English is really good and you’re speaking a lot
quicker!’ is the message Shekiera Martinez has gleefully received from
her Hammers teammates recently. The striker may only be just over a
month into her West Ham United journey, but she has already built strong
bonds on and off the pitch as she settles into the Claret and Blue family.

WEST HAM UNITED WOMEN | PLAYER FOCUS
Shekiera Martinez
The 23-year-old signed for
the Club in the summer,
penning a three-year
contract after ending an
eight-year stay at Frauen-
Bundesliga side Eintracht Frankfurt.
Playing for Frankfurt was
all Martinez had known in her
professional career and July 2024
marked a period of change in the
Germany U23 international’s life.
Leaving a side that she had played
more than 110 times for, the No19
made the move to England but
quickly returned to her home
country, as she spent the first half
of the season at SC Freiburg to
accumulate the necessary points
to meet the Governing Body
Endorsement (GBE) criteria for
international player visas.
During her spell at Freiburg,
the Fulda-born striker made a
clear impact, scoring five goals
and registering two assists in 12
Frauen-Bundesliga matches, and
she returned to Chadwell Heath in
January with a burning desire to
bring that form into the Hammers’
Barclays Women’s Super League
endeavors.
Her first league start, which
followed a positive performance
against Tottenham Hotspur in
the Subway® Women’s League
Cup, came against Everton on 26
January. The clock hadn’t even
ticked over to double digits at
Chigwell Construction Stadium
when Martinez found the back of
the net, opening her Hammers
account with a terrific bullet
header as she latched onto Viviane
Asseyi’s near-post corner.
“I was so happy to score my
first goal so early in my career at
West Ham,” beamed Martinez.
“Seeing how my team celebrated,
and how close we all are, it felt
like I had been here longer than
just one month.
“I’m really happy at the Club, to
be honest. Settling into the team
was very easy and the girls are so
nice to me. There’s a real family
feel here, everyone is really close.
We’re a real team and it’s so good
to be a part of.
“I love the positivity we have,
and the physicality, the speed of
the games. It’s a shame that the
results haven’t always been what
we wanted because I think we’ve
been better in those games, but
we’ve just missed out.
“I have to say, the first games
were really hard for me because
of the physicality of the teams we
were playing against. I was quite
sore after the games, but now it’s
getting better. That’s also helped
by the feedback from the girls
and their positivity.”
Post Everton, there was a
wholesome feel in east London
as Martinez celebrated her first
goal with January signing Verena
Hanshaw, whom she spent six
years at Frankfurt with, who
14WWW.WHUFC.COM
2024/25
had also celebrated a landmark
against the Toffees having made
her West Ham debut.
Martinez made no secret about
how delighted she was to be
reunited with the left-back and the
pair have helped each other settle
into life at Chadwell Heath.
“I’m really happy that Verena’s
here,” she revealed. “When
we played with each other in
Frankfurt, we were really close
with each other and it’s really
helped me to have her here.
“I haven’t been able to see
London a lot! We’re at home a
lot for recovery because after
training I have to sleep and take
care of myself. In my time off
I want to be able to explore
London a lot more.
“My English is getting better!
Some people are telling me ‘hey
Shekiera, your English is really
good and you’re speaking a lot
quicker!’. It’s nice to hear people
say that but my first days trying
to learn the language were
quite tough!”
When Martinez joined West
Ham, she stated she wanted to
challenge herself by playing in the
WSL – and the drive to succeed
as a professional footballer has
always run through her.
Martinez’s earliest memories
of playing football are of playing
for enjoyment, still thriving in the
competitive nature of the sport
but, as she described, ‘playing
without thinking’. She began her
career with SV Gläserzell and FV
Horas before joining Frankfurt
in 2016, which was when the
prospect of playing professionally
really arose.
“When I was at Frankfurt, in
the first team, it really hit me
how much I wanted to be a
professional footballer,” she said.
“In the early stages of my career,
for me, everything happened so
quickly, I just had so much fun.
I’m also very thankful for my time
at SC Freiburg earlier this season.
I maybe could have built up some
more confidence there, but I think
I will get better. I met so many nice
people there and enjoyed every
single day, because I see how
quickly time goes.”
Following this afternoon’s game
against Brighton & Hove Albion,
Martinez will once again link up
with the Germany U23 national
team, for fixtures against England
and the Netherlands.
Consistent minutes in the WSL
and standout performances will
only help Martinez’s pedigree on
the international stage, and she
hopes a call-up to the first team
won’t be far away.
She said: “I’m so grateful to play
for the U23s. I’m one of the oldest
in the squad, so I try to take my
experience and help the younger
players. I want to use my time in
the U23s as a chance to grow, and
hopefully I will play for the first
team one day!”

WEST HAM UNITED WOMEN | OPPOSITION
WORDS: JONNY CHICK
Meet The Opposition
BRIGHTON &
HOVE ALBION
Brighton & Hove Albion are
enjoying a positive 2024/25
campaign under Dario
Vidošić. The Seagulls are
currently in fifth with five wins
from their 13 Barclays Women’s
Super League matches, but are yet
to secure a league victory since
the turn of the new year.
In fact, their last WSL win
came against the Hammers in
November, when summer signing
Fran Kirby struck late to deny West
Ham what would have been a
well-earned point – as Rehanne
Skinner’s side levelled proceedings
through a Katrina Gorry brace,
having been two goals down.
The south-coast club joined the
WSL in the 2018/19 campaign, and
their highest finish in England’s
top flight came in the 2020/21
season – ending the term sixth in
the standings.
Brighton, who last time out
were beaten 3-2 at Aston Villa
in the Adobe Women’s FA Cup,
will hope they can rediscover the
form that helped them suffer just
one defeat from their opening
seven games in all competitions,
this afternoon.
TRANSFER
INS AND OUTS
Brighton only made one
signing during the January
transfer window, which
came in the form of defender
Caitlin Hayes (below) on
a permanent transfer from
Celtic, whom she spent
the past four-and-a-half
seasons with.
A quiet January followed
a busy summer as Vidošić
brought in ten new faces,
including two England
internationals: midfielder
Fran Kirby and striker
Nikita Parris.
Alongside Kirby,
midfielder Jelena Čanković
also arrived from the
Stamford Bridge club in the
summer, while Scotland
international McLauchlan
and the Netherlands’ Marisa
Olislagers also joined
Vidošić’s new-look side.
In one of seven summer
departures from the Amex,
England international Katie
Robinson, who was the
Seagulls’ second-top scorer
in all competitions last term,
joined WSL rivals Aston Villa
on a free transfer.
20WWW.WHUFC.COM
2024/25
ONES TO WATCH
RACHEL McLAUCHLAN
Defender
When Rachel McLauchlan faced
the Hammers in November, it was
only her second league start for
Brighton after joining the Seagulls
in the summer. That afternoon at
the Amex, the 27-year-old fullback
produced a goal and an assist
as Brighton claimed a narrow
3-2 victory, and has since started
every WSL game under Vidošić.
McLauchlan, who has made
more than three clearances and
two interceptions per game this
term, ended a three-season stay
at Rangers to join the Seagulls.
The defender had also plied her
trade with Aberdeen, Hibernian
and Glasgow City, as well as
Yeovil Town.
VICKY LOSADA
Midfielder
The addition of Vicky Losada
in the summer of 2023 was a
statement signing for the Seagulls.
The midfielder arrived after one
season at Roma, whom she joined
following two campaigns with
Manchester City. The 33-year-old,
who has also played for Arsenal,
was part of the squad that lifted
the 2021/22 Women’s League
Cup, and she contributed a goal
against rivals Manchester United
in that season’s group stage. But
Losada is arguably most well
known for her stay at Spanish
giants Barcelona, where she won
the UEFA Women’s Champions
League, seven Spanish cups and
six league titles in eight seasons.
NIKITA PARRIS
Forward
THE MANAGER... Brian Vidošic
Vidošić, who was appointed Brighton manager in the summer, has certainly shown
his managerial qualities in the WSL this term – especially at the start of the campaign,
with his team chalking up four victories from their opening six league games.
The 37-year-old spent two seasons at Melbourne City in Australia’s A-League in his first
managerial role before moving to the Amex, succeeding interim boss Mikey Harris.
As a player, Vidošić made more than 20 appearances for Australia’s first team, making his
debut just three years after his first senior appearance in football.
After beginning his career at Brisbane Roar, Vidošić played 30 times for FC
Nürnberg before making loan moves to MSV Duisburg and Arminia Bielefeld.
Then, he spent two years at Adelaide United, making more than 50
appearances – the most he made for any club. He would then go onto play
for a further nine sides, including Melbourne City and Wellington Phoenix.
Former Manchester City and
Manchester United forward Nikita
Parris has been a breath of fresh
air for Brighton since arriving in
the summer. Moving from the Red
Devils after topping their scoring
charts last term, the 30-year-old
has brought experience to the
Seagulls’ frontline, scoring nine
goals and providing two assists
in all competitions – including a
brace in last weekend’s FA Cup
tie. Parris’ first-team career began
at Everton before later spending
spells with Lyon and Arsenal.
She also made history with the
Lionesses, helping England win
UEFA Women’s Euro 2022 for the
first time.

while balancing work is tough, but
the cause keeps me motivated.
Please consider donating to help
us make a real difference in the
community.”
Matthew Smith
Matthew Smith
West Ham Supporter & Non-
Profit Founder
“Hi, I’m Matthew Smith, a 27-yearold
West Ham supporter from the
United States and the founder
of a non-profit housing business
that helps essential workers,
like teachers and nurses, find
stable paths to homeownership.
The London Marathon will be
my fourth Abbott World Major
Marathon, following Chicago
(2022), New York (2023), and
Berlin (2024).
“I’m excited to experience
the London course’s incredible
atmosphere, iconic landmarks, and
energetic crowds. While I’m a bit
wary of the hills – having mostly
run flatter courses – I’m ready for
the challenge.
“Running for the West Ham
United Foundation means
supporting the powerful impact
the Club has on east London
communities. Football unites us,
and I’m proud to run for a cause
that makes a real difference.
Please support me in raising vital
funds for the Foundation.”
Hans Louis
Executive Performance Chef,
Rush Green Training Ground
“Hello! I’m Hans Louis, Executive
Performance Chef at Rush Green
and proud father to Carter, Cuba,
and Hali. This will be my first
London Marathon, and my goal is
simple: finish with pride!
“I’ve heard that Canary Wharf
can be a tough part of the course,
but I’m preparing for it. As I train,
I’m constantly reminded of the
Foundation’s incredible work
supporting children and families
in need. I’ve even had the privilege
of participating in Foundation
activities and witnessing first hand
how they create opportunities
for young people to succeed,
regardless of their background.
Hans Louis
“I’m running to raise funds
for this amazing cause. Every
donation, big or small, makes a
real difference. Thank you for
supporting me and the West Ham
United community.”

FAVOURITES
VERENA HANSHAW DISCUSSES HER FAVOURITE THINGS, FROM
FROM KARAOKE SONGS, TO HOLIDAYS, TO OTHER SPORTS!
BOX SET OR TV SERIES
I watch a lot of TV and to
choose a favourite one
is difficult. I’d say Vikings,
I watched it on Netflix.
PHONE APP
I’d say WhatsApp.
COMPUTER GAME
We recently played on
the Nintendo Switch –
we played Super Mario
and Mario Party. I did play
FIFA when I was younger,
but since then, not
as much.
HOLIDAY DESTINATION
That’s a tough one.
I went to Iceland a few
years ago and it was
really nice because
you can do and see so
much. That’s probably
my favourite place I’ve
been to so far.
OTHER SPORT TO WATCH
I love to watch
skiing, because
Austria is very good
at it, and darts! I’m
really into darts now,
I watched the World
Championships!
SPORTS STAR
When I was young,
I looked up to
Ronaldinho and David
Beckham.
TEAMMATE
It would have to be
Shekiera [Martinez].
We played together at
Frankfurt.
GROUND TO PLAY AT
I loved it when I played
at Old Trafford in the
opening game of UEFA
Euro 2022. It was the
opening game of the
tournament, and the
stadium and atmosphere
were both amazing.
MATCH YOU’VE BEEN
TO WATCH
It was about two years
ago and it was Frankfurt
versus Chelsea. It was
such a good game
because the fans were
just amazing.
MATCH YOU’VE PLAYED IN
Again, it would have to
be the first game of Euro
2022 at Old Trafford,
against England.
MEAL
I love pizza, and potato
dumplings. In Rome, the
pizza was really good.
KARAOKE SONG
I think I have to do one,
but I haven’t done it yet!
I’d maybe pick Barbie
Girl – I could maybe do a
duet with Shekiera!
