Meeting the needs of northern Europe

A member of the Holcim Group

02

Aggregate Industries is a major supplier of high quality crushed granite to markets

across northern Europe. With our own fleet of self discharging vessels, strategically

placed coastal super quarries and extensive knowledge of the European markets,

we can provide a full product and logistical solution for our customers, through ports

that span the coastline from Spain to Russia and beyond.

Aggregate Industries is a member of

the Holcim Group and has production

and logistical capabilities enabling us to

supply some of the largest construction

projects in Europe, from power stations

and offshore pipelines to port

redevelopments, roads and railways.

Our dedicated technical team also

allows us to develop material for

highly specialist uses and complex

projects, all to country specific and

European specifications.

Crushed granite ranging in size from

washed sand up to offshore material

is supplied from two super quarries

at Yeoman Glensanda, on the west

coast of Scotland and Halsvik

Aggregates, north of Bergen in

Norway, as well as a third quarry at

Kvalsund in the far north of Norway,

with a combined production capacity

in excess of 11.5 million tonnes

per annum.

As well as selling directly to customers

from Yeoman Glensanda and Halsvik

Aggregates, we operate virtual quarries

as Yeoman Baumineralien in Germany

Aggregate Industries

Your international partner

for construction solutions

and Yeoman Poland in Poland where

the imported material is reprocessed

for the local markets. We sell to

customers in France through our sister

company, Holcim Granulats and to

Denmark through our joint venture

partner Dansk Natursten. Aggregate

Industries also has significant

experience and well established trading

partners in Belgium, the Netherlands,

Russia and the Nordic & Baltic states.

The responsible source

As a major supplier of materials to

the construction industry, we are

very aware of the impact our products

have on people and the environment.

We have a real passion for sustainability

and protecting the world for future

generations to come. We see our goal

as creating environments built to the

highest standards, not only through the

provision of the highest quality and

most sustainable materials, but also

through working closely with our

customers, clients, communities and

other stakeholders in the supply chain

to find the best solution.

In the UK, we have led the way by

becoming the first company to be

certified to BES 6001 - the Responsible

Sourcing framework developed by

Building Research Establishment

(BRE). The BES 6001 framework

standard is an independent certification

scheme which assesses responsible

sourcing policies and practices

throughout the supply chain of

construction products.

We have also been addressing issues

such as health & safety, quality control,

ethical trading, carbon and water

management, biodiversity and social

responsibility so that we can offer our

customers truly sustainable solutions.

Now more than ever it is our inherent

responsibility to show strong leadership

and be a beacon to both businesses

and the community. Our employees,

community partners, contractors

and customers play a vital role in the

sustainable future of our business

and the world around us.

Where mountain and sea unite, Yeoman Glensanda has become one of the world’s

largest single quarry operations with an annual production capacity in excess of 9 million

tonnes. A super quarry on the banks of Loch Linnhe in the west coast of Scotland with

over 800 million tonnes of reserves. That’s an incredible resource of the highest

quality durable granite, the ideal product for a multitude of uses.

Glensanda is located in a truly amazing

yet geographically remote location.

There are no road or rail connections

due to the rugged mountainous terrain,

therefore all product leaves by sea

via purpose built aggregate carriers,

through an accessible 200 metre deep,

sheltered channel.

GLORY HOLE

Yeoman Glensanda

With formidable reserves

The Glensanda quarry has become

known as one of the world’s most

unique and efficient mineral extraction

operations. Its innovative ‘Glory Hole’

method provides a long-term solution

to the economic and environmental

extraction of the granite reserves that

the market demands.

Following extraction the rock is primary

crushed and fed in to the glory hole,

a 3.3 metre diameter vertical shaft that

is 300 metres deep.

TUNNEL - 1.8km

OVERALL DISTANCE - 3.3km

The crushed rock is transported

from the mountain top to the

foreshore via a horizontal 1.8 km

tunnel conveyor, which carries the

granite to the washing and screening

processing facilities and massive

storage bins ready for ship loading.

Combined with its innovative quarrying

methods and our dedicated ship logistics,

Yeoman Glensanda continually supplies

the needs of Europe with high quality

competitively priced crushed rock, with

the minimum of environmental impact

to its local community and the beauty

that is Glensanda.

Our operations are managed and

material produced in strict compliance

with EN ISO 9001:2000 and is

independently audited by BVQI.

The prerequisite to developing any quarry operation is the adherence to strict environmental

controls. Nowhere is this better demonstrated than at Glensanda, on the wild and beautiful

west coast of Scotland.

Yeoman Glensanda represents an

ideal solution to society’s demands

for the supply of high quality durable

granite aggregate at a minimal

impact on the environment.

To minimise visual impact from the

coast, the quarry is sited a mile inland

and cut down into the mountain 600

metres above sea level. The unique

location of Yeoman Glensanda has

called for unprecedented landscaping

and restoration work, to minimise the

impact upon the environment and

to ensure the restoration of quarry

faces to their natural state.

So intensive, yet careful, is the

regeneration process, that already

75% of the quarry restoration has

been carried out even though only 10%

of the reserves have been extracted.

Yeoman Glensanda

Fulfilling our responsibility

As a further commitment to the

environment and local community,

Yeoman Glensanda has collaborated

with British marine biologists, to help

increase fish stocks in the area,

as well as boost the spawning

power of the west coast lobster

by creating artificial reefs near

Glensanda, in Loch Linnhe.

The £1m project, the world’s largest

experimental artificial reef, uses granite

dust and ash by products to create

concrete blocks, which are piled up

in 24 individual reefs the size of nine

football pitches. As hoped, lobsters

and other shellfish have made the reefs

their home and they have also become

a safe haven for the Atlantic cod.

Yeoman Glensanda is the biggest

employer in the local community

and the quarry’s remote location

gives it a unique role in the lives of

over 200 employees. With on site

accommodation, including entertaining

and fitness facilities and even

a sauna, Yeoman Glensanda is

committed to the welfare of its

personnel. There is even a dedicated

boat service in and around the region

that services the needs of the local

community, as well as transporting

employees to and from the site.

Aggregate Industries has been a regular

winner of the prestigious Sustain

Magazine awards. Yeoman Glensanda

was awarded The International Prize,

Award for Trade, in recognition of its role

in supplying aggregate to northern

Europe and the UK.

Halsvik has one of the deepest quays

of the quarries in Norway and is

strategically situated on the accessible

Fensfjord. A unique location on the

west coast, approximately 90km

north of Bergen.

Capable of accommodating ships

of up to 60,000 tonnes capacity and

offering rapid conveyor shiploading

day and night, Halsvik has become

a dependable resource for the

supply of high quality, durable

aggregates to the UK, Scandinavian

and northern European markets.

Halsvik Aggregates

Hidden depths

The land of the midnight sun, Norway - where bountiful mineral reserves make

Halsvik quarry the jewel in Norway’s crown, with an annual production capacity

of 2.5 million tonnes and consented mineral reserves in excess of 200 million tonnes.

Halsvik is ideally located to serve the ports of northern Europe.

With state of the art crushing

facilities, Halsvik has the capacity

to crush 2.5 million tonnes of rock

per annum and is capable of

achieving high quality, uniformly

cubic, finished materials.

One of the primary uses of Halsvik

aggregate is for the offshore pipe

bedding market. However, the

excellent quality of the Halsvik

granite, is ideal for use as a high

grade aggregate in ready-mixed

concrete and asphalt for the construction

industry. It is also suitable for use

as railway ballast, sub-base and

river protection works.

In addition to its west coast site on

the Fensfjord, Halsvik Aggregates also

operates Kvalsund quarry, a second

site in Finnmark, near Hammerfest.

Kvalsund quarry means that massive

reserves of aggregates are also

available from the far north of the

country for the offshore North Sea

pipe bedding market.

Test results show that the Norwegian

granite is very hard, has good wear

resistance and a specific gravity

of approximately 2.7grams per

cubic centimeter for solid rock.

Our operations are managed and

material produced in strict compliance

with EN ISO 9001:2000 and is

Halsvik Aggregates’ primary concerns are for quality, safety and respect for the

environment. With continued investment and training, Halsvik Aggregates ensure

that it’s quarries have minimal effects on the environment and that its operations

satisfy the needs of the local communities.

At Halsvik Aggregates, people are

at the heart of the business and we

recognise that our employees are

our greatest asset. Halsvik’s quarries

are situated in extremely under

populated areas. However,

with over 50 employees at both

Halsvik and Kvalsund quarries,

many of them devoting more than

12 years service, we are a key

employer in the local communities.

As such, great importance is placed

on providing support and continual

development for our employees.

Halsvik Aggregates

A solid commitment

Halsvik Aggregates also works closely

with other industrial operations to

develop and improve the site at the

quarry and surrounding area. The stone

is only extracted down to sea level and

not beyond. This newly created, flat

land on an otherwise rocky shoreline

is then returned to the community as

usable land, providing space for new

industry and helping to create jobs in

the area. We have been supportive

of initiatives to provide joint facilities

such as office buildings and welfare

amenities. Since the quarry first opened

over 12 years ago, excellent links have

been built with the local community.

The quarry has provided sponsorship

for skiing trips for a local disabled

group and worked with employees and

the local community to collect clothes

and toys to send to Kaliningrad.

Central to our operation is our

responsibility to the environment,

the local community and our long

term strategic commitment to the

local regions in which our businesses

operate. The area in which Halsvik

quarry is situated is also home to the

rare Sea Eagle and these spectacular

birds can regularly be seen flying

along the fjord. We are very aware

of the impact works have on the

environment and we take great care

to protect and restore the surrounding

area for future generations to come.

Above and beyond compliance with

current standards, Halsvik aim to lead

in terms of social responsibility

towards the local communities.

The pride of the company’s logistics operations, Aggregate Industries operates

a fleet of purpose built, self discharging bulk carriers. Specially designed and

equipped to efficiently transport and discharge aggregates and other dry bulk

products in an environmentally responsible and economical manner.

With the geographically remote

locations of Aggregate Industries super

quarries and their coastal locations,

aggregates are transported via sea to

our customers. Purpose built ships with

up to 97,000 tonne cargo capacity are

the key link in the supply of our

products to customers throughout

Europe and further afield; they are

effectively the conveyor belts of the

sea, linking the quarry to the markets.

The ships are constructed and

equipped to efficiently self discharge

up to seven product grades at up to

a maximum discharge rate of 6,000

tonnes per hour respectively. The

quick discharge speed coupled with

fast loading at Yeoman Glensanda

and Halsvik Aggregates facilitates

an efficient turnaround schedule of

the vessels which combined with

their carrying capacity, enables us

to offer stable, long term and when

required, a rapid supply of

aggregates to our customers.

The long ‘over the side’ outreach of the

conveyor discharge booms enables

direct discharge to quayside storage

areas, into hoppers or at sea transfer

to other vessels/barges. The flexibility

offered by this method of discharge

also has benefits in limiting the capital

outlay for our customers at the

Yeoman Baumineralien GmbH has

been serving the German market with

high class aggregates for 25 years

by importing high quality granite

from Yeoman Glensanda and

Halsvik Aggregates super quarries

to four large depots in Hamburg,

Brunsbüttel, Rostock and

Wilhelmshaven. The aggregates

are primarily used in construction

projects across Northern Germany,

from ready-mixed concrete and

asphalt to road and rail construction.

In Hamburg, the raw, unprocessed

aggregate is supplied direct from

ships to a combination of open

stockpiles and a sophisticated grid

of underground tunnels. Hamburg’s

totally enclosed screening plant can

process up to 6,000 tonnes of

aggregate per day, blended to

customer requirements and exact

specifications and loaded directly

on to a fleet of dedicated lorries.

Yeoman Baumineralien

Your partner in northern Germany

There is a network of Aggregate Industries depots supplying approximately

2 million tonnes each year in northern Germany, all perfectly placed at major

sea terminals, to supply an ever increasing demand for high quality aggregates.

The processing plants which screen,

blend and wash material are gravity

fed, making them extremely energy

efficient. Using the latest technologies,

they are fully computerised with self

loading and weighing systems, which

guarantees swift delivery of high quality

products to the client’s specific

requirements, on time, every time.

Aggregate Industries in Germany have

led the way in developing new systems

of processing material, which are now

being utilised all across Europe.

With three further depots in

Brunsbüttel, Rostock and

Wilhelmshaven, Yeoman

Baumineralien is capable of

handling any number of large scale

projects and has a broad and diverse

customer base. We have built an

excellent reputation through loyalty

to our customers, together with

the consistently high quality of

the materials we produce to be

delivered all across Germany.

Yeoman Baumineralien are proud

of the economical and environmentally

Yeoman Poland are a leading

supplier of crushed stone aggregate

in North Poland. Aggregate is imported

from both Yeoman Glensanda and

Halsvik Aggregates quarries, to virtual

quarries and import depots in Gdansk,

Gdynia, Szczecin and Swinoujscie.

Yeoman Poland

Your partner in northern Poland

The four operations in northern Poland receive and process up to 2 million tonnes of

aggregates every year, continually supplying the Polish markets and other territories with

the highest quality crushed aggregates predominantly for the construction of roads and bridges.

The crushed granite aggregate

delivered from Yeoman Glensanda to

our processing plant in Gdansk is not

only ideal for use in asphalt, rail ballast

and sub-base, but our screening and

washing plants are capable of

producing crushed and washed

aggregate of the highest quality with

a very low filler content. This meets

the stringent specifications required

in manufacturing concrete used in

the construction of bridges as well

as clean ballast for railways. Our

aggregates for concrete are produced

to the highest quality to meet Polish

and European standards.

Gneiss aggregate from Halsvik

Aggregates is used for sub-base,

railway ballast, and is ideal for use

in asphalt mixtures for the road

construction industry, all conforming

to PN-B-1112:1996 standards.

Other specialist aggregates are

produced on site at our ports and

processing plants, such as brick red

coloured aggregate, perfect for

constructing bicycle paths. Asphalt

mixes produced using this material

do not require additional pigments

and retain their lively colours even

after long term use.

22 Dansk Natursten A/S

Aggregate Trading Denmark

Aggregate Industries operates a joint venture with the Danish aggregates trading company,

Dansk Natursten A/S, the market leaders for imports of hard rock material in Denmark.

Dansk Natursten is a well established

aggregates business based in Randers,

northern Denmark. Founded in 1996,

sustainable business development,

continued expansion and excellent

customer management have led to

the company’s current success

and ongoing growth.

As Denmark has almost no indigenous

hard-rock reserves, nearly all of the

demand for material has to be imported

by sea, mainly from quarries in Norway

and Sweden. From 14 import terminals

conveniently placed close to all major

cities in Denmark, Dansk Natursten

imports and sells over a million tonnes

of aggregates each year, mainly into

the concrete, asphalt and rail markets,

supplying material to projects across

the country.

In addition to the permanent import

terminals, Dansk Natursten has the

ability to access smaller ports and

offload material directly onto

trucks for transportation to nearby

ready-mixed or asphalt customers and

smaller projects. This flexible approach

facilitates supplies to even the most

inaccessible areas by land or sea.

Dansk Natursten is particularly

successful in supplying niche markets

requiring specialised products such as

high density stone and coloured or light

weight aggregates.

Recent projects include a new church

built completely out of white limestone

imported from Greece and the supply

of yellow sand was stipulated for use

in the landscaping of the new ‘Parken’

National Arena in Copenhagen.

Additionally, a hospital project required

a specialist application where the

requirement for the supply of material

with a heavy density of more than

5 tons / m3 was essential, as this was

to be used in the construction of walls

to reduce the amount of radioactivity

passing from one room to another.

Dansk Natursten is committed to

environmental protection. To reduce

the carbon footprint of the organisation,

trucks are not used in the transportation

of rail ballast. Instead, the ballast is

offloaded from ships in the port direct

to rail wagons where it is washed to

minimise the impact of dust.
