Este es un nuevo espacio pensado
para los hispanohablantes que
buscan material en su idioma en
la biblioteca y para los lectores
–cualquiera sea su lengua madre-
el arte y otras manifestaciones
socioculturales en idioma español.
Un libro no es sólo un conjunto
de letras, palabras y páginas que
ocupa su lugar en el anaquel. Es un
arma, una herramienta y un mundo
que se abre ante nosotros. Esconde
recuerdos, historias, secretos.
Todos, sin importar nuestra lengua,
Recomendaciones para este
LIBROS
· La muerte de Artemio Cruz
(Carlos Fuentes, México)
La literatura suele ser la mejor
manera de aprender historia. Éste
clásico mexicano es una prueba
de ello. La revolución, sus aciertos
y errores, el caos político que le
sucedió y las vivencias de sus
protagonistas son algunos de los
temas que ocupan las páginas
de este libro, hechos carne en su
protagonista, Artemio Cruz.
En su lecho de muerte, Cruz se
obliga a recordar. La condena
de una memoria abrasiva, nos
permite a los lectores armar, a
través de distintos recuerdos
del protagonista, una vida que
representa la de muchos otros:
quienes al finalizar la revolución
mexicana, sacaron provecho del
caos político basándose en la
corrupción y la injusticia social.
Los episodios de su memoria
van desde fines del siglo XIX
y se prolongan hasta los 60 y
demuestran cómo un hombre se
aleja de los valores de la revolución
para convertirse en un miembro
más de la elite de líderes que
hundió al campesinado mexicano,
robándole sus posibilidades y
haciéndolo sufrir las eternas
injusticias sobre su propia tierra.
· Todo Mafalda. (Quino, Argentina)
Seguramente, para quienes han
tenido el gusto de conocerla,
Mafalda es mucho más que un
personaje de historietas creado por
el dibujante y humorista Joaquín
Lavado (Quino). Es una niña con
preocupaciones de grandes y
chicos, que encarna la idiosincrasia
argentina, y ha cosechado con
los años la admiración y el cariño
mundial.
En este inmenso libro, puede
encontrarse además de todas las
tiras de Mafalda, un manuscrito
July/August 2006 Access Magazine • www.londonpubliclibrary.ca PAGE 5
de García Márquez sobre la
“Quinoterapia”, la cronología
de vida de Quino, inéditos,
presentaciones para televisión,
la historia, su relación con otros
personajes de comics y hasta una
misma tira en los 12 idiomas que
ha sido traducida.
«Quino, con cada uno de sus
libros, lleva ya muchos años
demostrándonos que los niños son
los depositarios de la sabiduría. (...)
Comprobar esto en cada libro de
Quino es lo que más se parece a la
felicidad: la Quinoterapia», opina
García Márquez.
CINE
Rotary grows support for Reading Garden!
presenta el universo creado o
recreado por Juan Rulfo. En relatos,
cartas de amor y fotografías, fue
indiscutiblemente, uno de los más
grandes artistas del siglo XX.
Como El Gallo de Oro, varios textos
para cine escritos por
Rulfo fueron
realizados,
algunos con
más faltas
que logros,
por distintos
directores
contemporáneos.
En este caso,
la historia es la
de un humilde
pregonero, que
recibe un gallo
dorado de pelea
moribundo y lo
revive con sus
cuidados.
London Rotary Club held its annual
volunteer recognition barbeque in the
Rotary Reading Garden in June. The
event recognizes in particular those
who make the Elegant Rummage Sale
happen each year. At the event, Rotary
President Jan Delaney (2nd from r.)
and Rummage Sale Coordinator John
Boyne(r.) presented a cheque for
$39,167 towards their original $400,000
pledge to Library Board Chair Jeff
Schlemmer and CEO Anne Becker. The
Rotary Foundation also gave $15,000
towards the pledge.
sentencia el relato.
El Gallo rojo, realizada en 1964
por el director Roberto Gavaldón,
fue adaptada por Carlos Fuentes,
Gabriel García Márquez y Roberto
Gavaldón. Ocupa un importante
lugar dentro de las 100 mejores
películas del cine mexicano y
constituye un documento que
permite conocer los escenarios, la
forma de hablar, las costumbres e
historia del pais, ese testimonio no
perecedero que es un orgullo para
los mexicanos y una cita obligada
para todo latinoamericano.
PARA ESCUCHAR
· Quién de nosotros (Mario
Benedetti, Uruguay)
respectivamente, pertenecientes a
los tres personajes
de la novela. Con
su pluma magistral,
construye la historia
y sus protagonistas
utilizando recursos
que fueron
aclamados por la
crítica tanto en
su lanzamiento
como durante el
transcurso de su
carrera.
La culpa, el
pasado, el
presente,
los malos entendidos
y el fantasma de los celos en
una historia donde “El ausente
era siempre el mejor”. Todo
conducido por un realismo crudo,
una obsesiva necesidad de crear
convicciones y certezas ante la falta
de claridad en los sentimientos.
· A toda Cuba le gusta (Afro Cuban
All Stars, Cuba)
Este disco está compuesto por diez
canciones del repertorio clásico
cubano, interpretadas por una
orquesta de cuatro generaciones de
los mejores músicos cubanos. Así,
la calidad y riqueza instrumental,
celebra el sonido de las mejores
orquestas cubanas del 50.
Fue nominado para El Grammy en
1998 y pertenece a la misma serie
que el renombrado disco de Buena
Vista Social Club.

Why?
Why does the Library spend so much time and effort
designing, fundraising and producing a Summer Reading
program?
Our reasons vary ~
• to foster a love of reading
• to encourage children of all ages to read and use the
library throughout the summer
• to act as a ‘reading bridge’ between school years
• to provide an activity that is FUN!!
July/August 2006 Access Magazine • www.londonpubliclibrary.ca PAGE 16
Children’s Librarians visited schools to
give a sneak peak of the 2006 Summer
Reading Program, speaking to more
than 10,000 children throughout the
city in June!!! As a result, over 1,360
excited kids began their Quest for
Heroes on June 24 - the first day of
registration- and another 3,500 spots
are expected to fill up quickly as the
summer progresses. Last year 10,758
book reports were made by 4,905 kids.
Atendance was 20, 473.
Meanwhile, work behind the scenes
began back in May with the creation
of the colourful playing board and
the design and printing of posters,
registration cards, prize passes,
comment cards, activity sheets, book
report forms and other materials. In all,
close to 100,000 items were produced,
printed, processed and delivered by
Library staff.
Clockwise, starting from top left -
• lineups at Masonville on the first day of registration
• behind the scenes, John Cates works diligently to get printing
supplies in order,
• piles and piles of paper ballots, book report and activity sheets, prize
passes, and other materials were shipped to every location
• more line ups at Masonville
