Men can play pivotal role in filling the nation’s
need for nurses
By John Voight
If you had told me at 16
years old, a recent high
school drop-out, that I would
one day have a successful
career with a C-suite title, I
wouldn’t have believed you.
I spent years struggling to
figure out my path — completing
my GED, serving in
the Army and working as a
police officer — until tragedy
struck. Following the
sudden death of my sister,
I knew I wanted to do more
with my life and needed a
career that provided more
opportunity.
That’s when I turned to
nursing.
Despite my previous academic
difficulties, I passed
the nursing school entrance
exam and gained admission,
using the $10,000 from my
sister’s life insurance to
earn my associate degree.
While becoming a registered
nurse might have
seemed like an unconventional
pivot at the time —
given that as recently as
2023 only 12% of registered
nurses were male — I absolutely
loved it.
In my role today as the
chief nursing officer at
Memorial Hermann The
Woodlands Medical Center
in North Houston, I hope
to serve as a role model to
others, especially men, who
are considering becoming
nurses.
Careers in nursing are
on the rise, and it remains
a very stable and desirable
profession, especially in
states like Texas that are
facing severe nursing shortages.
In addition to the flexibility
and competitive pay,
according to the Bureau of
Labor Statistics, employment
for registered nurses
in the U.S. will grow 6% between
2023 and 2033, faster
than the average of other
professions.
But we don’t just need
more nurses. We need a
more diverse nursing workforce.
Nurses have more touchpoints
with patients than
other caregivers, and research
shows how important
it is to have nurses of
all ages and identities, as it
can narrow disparities and
improve patient satisfaction
and outcomes.
Male nurses play a pivotal
role in that diversification,
because the gender of
a health care provider can
make a difference. For example,
male patients may
prefer a male nurse to perform
more sensitive procedures
or feel more comfortable
disclosing personal
information to them.
Although the number of
male nurses is 10 times what
it was in the 1970s, the percentage
of male nurses and
the number of male nursing
students have remained
stagnant over the past few
years.
When I speak to high

Expert tips from a dietitian: 3 keys to staying healthy and
losing weight
By Satya Jonnalagadda, PhD, MBA,
RDN
With obesity rates tripling over the
past 60 years, anti-obesity medications
have become a game-changing
tool in a persistent public health crisis.
But they are just that — a tool,
not a standalone solution.
The excitement over GLP-1 medications
has led to some misconceptions.
Many view them as a “miracle shot”
for weight loss, but the truth is, there
is no single solution for weight loss.
Healthy eating, physical activity, and
lifestyle changes are the foundation
of every weight loss journey, and new
research emphasizes the importance
of all three when taking a GLP-1.
One challenge with GLP-1 medications
is that while you certainly
lose weight fast, it also impacts your
muscle. A recent study found that up
to 50% of weight lost while taking a
GLP-1 medication can come from
muscle. Over the course of 12-18
months, the muscle lost is comparable
to a decade of age-related muscle
loss.
The research emphasizes that
proper nutrition, regular physical
activity, and healthy habits can all
make a difference. Practical lifestyle
strategies and meal plans can help
individuals minimize muscle loss
while optimizing weight loss. Brands
like OPTAVIA have made it simpler
by incorporating this advice into new
products with higher protein and
personalized coaching.
3 steps to healthy, medical
weight loss
1. Prioritize protein
Protein is the building block of
muscle — an essential nutrient for
any weight loss journey, but particularly
important for those taking GLP-
1s. Since muscle can account for up
to half of total weight lost with these
medications, adequate high-quality
protein intake is critical.
To encourage healthier weight
loss, experts recommend consuming
at least 1.2 grams of protein per kilogram
of body weight daily, spread
across meals.
Nutrition is not simple, but there’s
support available. Programs like
OPTAVIA offer support with easy-tofollow
scientifically backed meal plans
and a new high-protein product line
tailored to GLP-1 users. Look for resources
like this - things that make it
easier to meet your protein needs without
overcomplicating your routine.
2. Find a community or support
system to motivate you to create
healthy habits
Sustainable weight loss is about
more than numbers on a scale — it’s
about creating habits that stick. Trying
to overhaul your diet, exercise and
habits all at once can be overwhelming.
The most successful weight loss
journeys incorporate support. That’s
where a coach can make all the difference.
Coaches offer guidance — they provide
accountability, motivation and,
in many cases, personalized support.
Look for solutions that incorporate
nutrition, exercise and community in
one place.
3. Combine nutrition and exercise
The most effective way to preserve
muscle is to pair a protein-rich diet
with regular physical activity.
Exercise doesn’t just burn calories
— it’s critical for healthy weight loss.
It helps protect and rebuild muscle,
making it especially important for
those taking GLP-1 medications. Resistance
training, like lifting weights
or using resistance bands, can be
particularly effective. Just two sessions
a week targeting all major muscle
groups can make a difference.
This synergy between nutrition
and exercise enhances the benefits
of GLP-1 medications, supporting
healthier weight loss and better longterm
outcomes.
The path forward
While GLP-1 medications are a
powerful tool, one thing is clear. They
are only one piece of the puzzle. Like
all weight loss journeys, they work
best when combined with a holistic
approach to health.
Lifestyle changes may seem daunting,
but the right support can make
it simple.

Male Nurses
continued from front page
school-age men about nursing, which
Nursing.org says is one of the best ways
to attract men to the field, I tell them nursing
is not just a caring profession. Now, it’s
a very technical job, particularly in specialties
like emergency medicine and surgery.
There seems to be a common misconception
that, as a nurse, your track is limited
to the traditional clinical setting.
While nurses can start practicing with
an associate or bachelor’s degree, there
are paths to go on to a career in education,
leadership or advanced clinical practice.
For example, I started in infectious diseases
before I moved to emergency medicine
— and now I’m a chief nursing officer at a
Level II Trauma Center.

It’s up to you to decide how far you want
to go, and you can chart your own course.
You can benefit from whatever pathway
you choose, whether you are already a registered
nurse looking to move up the professional
ladder or considering nursing as
a second career.
However, going back to school can understandably
seem scary or nearly impossible.
I was sure that earning my associate degree
would be the end of my formal education,
but after managing two emergency
departments, I realized creating budgets
and hiring staff was difficult to learn on
the fly. That led me to Walden University,
a top conferrer of nursing master’s degrees
in the U.S. The online curriculum made it
easy to balance my studies with an already
full schedule, and allowed me to gain valuable,
real-life experience that immediately
translated into my work.

TO FIND A SCHOOL NEAR YOU!
Earning my degrees while juggling a fulltime
job certainly hasn’t been easy, but I’m
so glad I did. I’m living proof that it’s never
too late to pursue your passion and successfully
make a difference — but I’m certainly
not the only person to do so. In fact,
the average American will change careers
three to seven times over their lifetime.
You can achieve great things once you
take the first step, and I hope more people,
especially men, will take that first step towards
a rewarding career in nursing.

celebrate
black history & culture
Throughout its history, Tallahassee has been shaped by the contributions of Black Americans and their culture. Following are a few landmarks to explore and appreciate
during Black History Month — or any time!
CASCADES PARK
1001 S. Gadsden St., Tallahassee – 850-891-3866
This 24-acre downtown park includes Florida’s Prime Meridian marker, the Adderley
Amphitheater at Cascades Park, multi-use trails, an interactive water fountain and a
Discovery playscape, in addition to numerous historical markers and spirit houses that
commemorate Smokey Hollow, an area that was once a thriving black community.
Located on the site of the former Leon County Jail, now known as the Cascades Historical
Plaza, the Tallahassee Civil Rights Memorial honors the courageous men and women who
led the jail-in to protest segregation and interprets other key events of Tallahassee’s civil
right history. A second smaller exhibit entitled “The Four Corners of History” shares the
story of the Old City Waterworks Building, the Caroline Brevard Grammar School, the former
Leon County Health Unit and the former jail site.
FIRST PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH
110 N. Adams St., Tallahassee – 850-222-4504 – oldfirstchurch.org
Built in 1838, this prominent Classic Revival style building still includes the original gallery,
which was set aside for slaves who were members of the church but who sat apart from
their masters. This is the only Tallahassee church remaining from territorial days.
Florida A&M University
1601 S. Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd., Tallahassee – 850-599-3000 – famu.edu
Established in 1887, the Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University (FAMU) was
founded as the State Normal College for Colored Students. Today, as one of 103 historically
Black colleges and universities (HBCU’s) in the nation, FAMU remains the only HBCU in
Florida’s 12-member state university system. The first president, Thomas DeSaille Tucker
and legislator Thomas Van Renssaler Gibbs, guided the school’s beginning, including its
move from Copeland Street to its present location on the most prominent hill in Tallahassee.
FAMU offers 97 degree programs and has an enrollment of more than 10,000 students. The
university is also home to the Meek-Eaton Archives Research Center & Museum.
FRENCHTOWN
North Macomb Street & West Virginia Street, Tallahassee – 850-513-9981
In the 19th century, many French settlers moved to the area that is now bounded by
Tennessee Street, Alabama Street, Woodward Avenue and Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard.
In 1831, the area that was then dubbed Frenchtown was comprised of plantations,
churches, homesteads, educational institutions, businesses and residences. Following the
Civil War, many former slaves migrated to the area, and it developed into a thriving middleclass
Black community. Only a few original structures remain, but preservation efforts
are underway. Famous musicians — including Ray Charles, Nat Adderley and his brother
Cannonball Adderley — lived and performed in this community.
John G. Riley House Museum and
Smokey Hollow
419 E. Jefferson St., Tallahassee – 850-891-3560 – rileymuseum.org
The John Gilmore Riley Center/Museum for African American History & Culture Inc. is a
historical and cultural gem that represents the thriving Black neighborhood, known
as Smokey Hollow, that once existed just east of what is now downtown Tallahassee.
Established in 1996, the museum’s programs provide an environment and means to
encourage and empower participants to develop an awareness of and gain an appreciation
for the educational and social contributions of the Black community to Florida’s history.
KNOTT HOUSE MUSEUM
301 E. Park Ave., Tallahassee – 850-922-2459
museumoffloridahistory.com/visit/knott-house-museum
Built in 1843, this historical home is the former residence of state official William Knott and
his wife, Luella. In 1865 the home served as temporary Union Headquarters — and it was
here that the Emancipation Proclamation was read in Florida, on the front steps. Restored
to its 1928 grandeur, the home is now a museum.
Meek-Eaton Black Archives Research
Center & Museum
445 Robert and Trudie Perkins Way, Tallahassee – 850-599-3020
famu.edu/academics/libraries/meek-eaton-black-archives-research-center-and-museum/
index.php
In 1976, the Carnegie Library on the historic campus of Florida A&M University became
the founding home of the Black Archives Research Center and Museum. Known as the
“Black Archives,” the center’s mission includes collecting, preserving, displaying and
disseminating information about African Americans and people of Africa worldwide. It
is one of only 10 Black archives in the U.S. This collection is the most extensive in the
Southeast and contains more than 500,000 archival records and 5,000 artifacts.
NATURAL BRIDGE BATTLEFIELD HISTORIC
STATE PARK
7502 Natural Bridge Road, Tallahassee – 850-922-6007 – floridastateparks.org/parks-andtrails/natural-bridge-battlefield-historic-state-park
The Battle of Natural Bridge took place in March 1865 when Union forces, including two
regiments of U.S. Colored Troops, landed near St. Marks Lighthouse, hoping to capture
Tallahassee. The advance was halted by the Confederates, and the Union troops retreated
to the coast. The Battle of Natural Bridge Reenactment is held annually in March.
CELEBRATE BLACK HISTORY AND CULTURE is continued on Page 15.

Remote work is on the decline. Today, more large companies are
for remote positions have decreased, and now new research shows the
pandemic-driven work-from-home era may be over.
The most recent Labor Department study shows nearly 75% of
businesses reported their employees rarely or did not engage in
teleworking last year, equating to 21 million more people working from
work full-time in 2022 compared to 2021. Interestingly, the number of
employers reporting teleworking is now similar to pre-COVID levels.
and how it functions will be different in this new post-pandemic era of
workplace.
Ergonomics edge
health, productivity and performance. In fact, a large university study
showed that ergonomic workstations reduced lost workdays by 75%. For

With this desking approach, team members forgo a permanent
workspace and claim a workstation as they need it. Perfect for teams
the company can grow. Plus, employees may enjoy a feeling of greater
autonomy with this setup.
Casual meeting spaces
Including a variety of informal, non-bookable collab spaces can help
foster relationship-building and idea sharing (without the formality of
scheduling a meeting and reserving a conference room). Repurposing an
employee lounge or outdoor break area into a huddle zone to use during
off hours can be a solid start. Finding open space to add a small grouping
of chairs and a coffee table in each department is another common
approach.
Thoughtful concentration areas
it should not overshadow the need for thoughtful concentration areas
where team members can perform independent tasks with more privacy
and enhanced ability to focus. Balancing collaboration space with
concentration space gives employees the opportunity to choose how they
work so they can be most effective.

celebrate
black history & culture
Throughout its history, Tallahassee has been shaped by the contributions of Black Americans and their culture. Following are a few landmarks to explore and appreciate
during Black History Month — or any time!
TALLAHASSEE MUSEUM
3945 Museum Drive, Tallahassee – 850-575-8684 – tallahasseemuseum.org
The Tallahassee Museum features the restored Bellevue mansion with an attached kitchen,
a slave cabin, a one-room schoolhouse used by former slaves, and the Bethel Missionary
Baptist Church, the state’s first organized Black church.
CIVIL RIGHTS HERITAGE WALK
120 E. Jefferson St., Tallahassee
visittallahassee.com/partners/tallahassee-leon-county-civil-rights-heritage-walk
This historical walk features 16 terrazzo panes that tell the story of the city’s bus boycott
of 1956 and the lunch counter sit-in demonstrations of 1960-1963. The sidewalk, located
on East Jefferson Street, includes the names of some of the Civil Rights leaders and other
activists who participated in the protests.
TAYLOR HOUSE MUSEUM OF HISTORIC
FRENCHTOWN
442 W. Georgia St., Tallahassee – 850-222-6111
visittallahassee.com/partners/taylor-house-museum-of-historic-frenchtown
Built in 1894, this historic home is listed in the register of historic places. It now houses a
museum celebrating the rich heritage of the Taylor, Casanas, Howell and Alexander families,
the Frenchtown community, and the civil rights movement.
THE GROVE MUSEUM
902 N. Monroe St., Tallahassee – 850-363-5688 – thegrovemuseum.com
The mission of The Grove Museum is to preserve and interpret the Call-Collins House, its
surrounding acreage and its historical collections — and to engage the public in dialogue
about civil rights and American history. Built by enslaved craftspeople around 1840, the
Call-Collins House at The Grove is one of the best-preserved antebellum residences in
Florida. Home to several generations of the Call and Collins families, mostly recently LeRoy
and Mary Call Collins, the site was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1972.
UNION BANK MUSEUM
219 Apalachee Parkway, Tallahassee – 850-561-2603
museumoffloridahistory.com/visit/union-bank-museum
Once the National Freedman’s Bank for newly emancipated slaves, today, the building
serves as an annex to the Carrie Meek/James Eaton Sr. Black Archives Research Center.
Frenchtown Walking Trail – Soul
Voices
North Macomb Street & West Virginia Street, Tallahassee – 850-513-9981
Soul Voices of Frenchtown features nine markers with audio components that tell the
history of Frenchtown, one of Tallahassee’s oldest Black communities. Through them,
visitors will discover and celebrate a time when Frenchtown was a thriving, self-sustaining
community of families, homes, businesses and pride — a time when Frenchtown had it all.
GREENWOOD CEMETERY
1601 Old Bainbridge Road, Tallahassee – talgov.com/realestate/res-coc-greenwood
An ordinance passed in 1936 prevented Black people from purchasing plots and burying
family in the Old City Cemetery, which at that time was one of the only cemeteries in
town. Several Black community members led by J.R.D. Laster, the area’s first Black funeral
director, purchased 16 acres on Old Bainbridge Road and established Greenwood Cemetery.
OLD CITY CEMETERY
Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard & Park Avenue, Tallahassee – 850-545-5842
talgov.com/realestate/res-coc-oldcity
The oldest public cemetery in Tallahassee, Old City Cemetery is one of the city’s most distinctive
historic sites. It is the final resting place for many of the men and women who contributed to the
development of Tallahassee and the state of Florida. Because it was Tallahassee’s only public burying
ground (nearby St. John’s Episcopal Cemetery was established for its congregation in 1840), Old City
Cemetery represents a cross section of Tallahassee’s people during the 19th century — slaves and
planters, governors and store clerks, veterans of wars and victims of yellow fever are all buried here.
