Morning Twilight

Moriah Margaret Jensen

2024

Close your eyes. Imagine, if you will, darkness all around you. There is a gentle rain falling and the drops make

themselves known as they hit leaves, rocks, and the Great Lake Superior itself. The air smells of petrichor and pine.

Morning twilight takes the stage, ready to begin its four-act show.

Astronomical Twilight

The rain stops; the water that remains glistens in the first hints of daylight. There is the occassional rustle of leaves

as forest creatures stir from slumber. Bird songs break the night's silence. The sky is lightening, blushing.

Nautical Twilight

The saltless sea is a pastel mirror. Those creatures whose days start long before ours rise and greet each other, surely

in a language too ancient for us to understand. They seek out breakfast, shelter from remnants of rain, and play

together as the earth tilts further to the east.

Civil Twilight

Waves lap at a pebbled shoreline as a rainbow spills across the heavens. The sun still hides under the horizon, but not

its rays. Possibility shimmers like the Lake. The day holds untold wonders in its hours like a child keeps found treasures

in their pockets.

Sunrise

The sky erupts in fire as the sun makes its first step into the day. Light dances on rocks, leaves, waves. Twilight bows,

its job as bridge between dark and light finished until it must reverse. But no time to dwell on that. Night is over.

The day is just beginning.

This piece was commissioned by and is dedicated to Mr. Joe DeLisi and the Chisago Lakes High School Band

Program in Lindström, MN. Without this program, I would not be the educator, musician, or person I am today.

I am eternally grateful for the experiences I have had, the friends I have made, and the things I have learned

through my time with CL Bands. I hope playing this music brings you all as much joy as creating it brought me.

Note for students and musicians:

All parts are important, regardless of the number of notes or solos. "Thank you" to each and every one of you for playing

my music and ensuring that each part is played with care, intentionality, and preparedness. The music belongs to you now!

Notes for teachers and conductors:

Solo brass players at the beginning will need bucket mutes. If bucket mutes are unavailable, straight mutes may be used

in a pinch.

The ocean drum player does not necessarily need to be "in time" with the ensemble in the beginning, but should be in

time with themself, just as a body of water has a "beat" to its waves as they hit the shore. This also goes for the frog guiro;

in nature, frog calls are not always "in time" with themselves. Research some examples and have fun emulating frog sounds!

At "Civil Twilight" altos should play with a breathy subtone. If the desired effect is not achievable with all players, soloists

may be selected, with all players joining at m.80.

If oboe player is unable to successfully play m.66 without breaking the phrase to breathe, the part may be played by two

oboes or paired with a clarinet to stagger breathe.

At m.118, ensure that the primary theme can be heard over the accented half notes. This does not mean the primary theme

should play out more, but the half notes should balance just underneath dynamically.

Unless otherwise notated, no mallet percussion should roll on held notes. Instead, let the sound ring for the full note value.

To begin, ensemble creates a "rainstorm" soundscape for 30". Woodwinds use key clicks to simulate rain. Brass use gentle claps, snaps, or leg pats

to simulate rain. Percussion improvises cymbal hits, rolls, and scrapes to add to the sound scape. Brass and cymbals continue as woodwinds begin to

play at measure 1, but gradually fade out by measure 5.
