Book club

Brilliant new releases for this month’s book club

Bad Publicity by Bianca Gillam -

When Andie lands her dream job as

a senior book publicist, she’s ready to

take the publishing world by storm.

Until her first day, when she discovers

that her biggest author is Jack

Carlson. The boy who ruined her life

in university. Who she hasn’t spoken

to in five years. Who is still infuriatingly

hot and now incredibly successful.

And who she has to travel with on

a book tour, part of a campaign she

cannot mess up if she wants to keep

her job. One month on tour with Jack,

visiting some of the most romantic

spots in Europe. Oh boy! Bloomsbury

I Bet You’d Look Good in a Coffin by

Katy Brent - Kitty Collins is a serial killer.

She doesn’t want to kill. It’s just so

hard to resist. Some men really, really

deserve it. Men like Blaze Bundy, an

anonymous influencer spreading

misogyny online. He’s making it very

hard for her to control her murderous

urges. Meanwhile she’s in the South of

France to watch her mother marry a

man Kitty’s never met. She should be

drinking cocktails and focusing on

her tan, not plotting a murder. But a

woman’s work is never done. Surely

one more teensy little kill wouldn’t

hurt, would it? Harper Collins

Nesting by Roisin O’Donnell - One

afternoon, Ciara Fay makes a splitsecond

decision that will change

everything. Grabbing an armful of

clothes from the washing line, she

straps her two young daughters into

her car and drives away. Head spinning,

all she knows for certain is that home

is no longer safe. But with dwindling

savings, no job or family close by, and

her husband’s relentless campaign to

get her back, Ciara finds herself adrift,

facing a broken housing system and

the voice of her own demons. Leaving

is one thing ... staying away is another.

Simon & Schuster

Also ... The Ex Effect by Jo Watson - Thirteen years ago, Ash was planning the night of her life with her high school

boyfriend, Logan. They were madly in love, wild about each other, and had been waiting patiently for this moment. It was

going to be perfect. That is, until it went down in very unsexy flames. Logan disappeared and Ash was left, quite frankly and

very inconveniently, sexually cursed. After years of disastrous dating and even more disastrous sex, she’s almost given up.

But some seriously flirtatious emailing with work associate, Maximillian Adam, offers her hope. Because if rumour is to be

believed, Maximillian Adam might just be God’s sexual gift to women. Great fun! Headline • The Last Days of Kira Mullam

by Nicci French - Nancy had a breakdown. But she’s okay now ... she and her boyfriend have moved into a new flat, she’s

doing her breathing exercises and doctor-prescribed pills. Then her new neighbour is found dead by suicide. But Nancy saw

her the day before, and doesn’t believe she was suicidal. The police, Nancy’s boyfriend and the neighbours think Nancy’s

vulnerable and don’t believe her instincts. But what if she’s right! Simon and Schuster

Making a Killing by Cara Hunter - In

2016, eight-year-old Daisy Mason

vanished from her Oxford home. Her

disappearance made the national press

and the final culprit shocked everyone.

DCI Adam Fawley remembers the case

well, he arrested Daisy’s mother for

murder himself. But Daisy’s body was

never found. Now, forensic evidence

at a current murder scene calls the

whole case into question. DCI Adam

Fawley and the team are brought back

in to investigate. And they all have one

question. What really happened to Daisy

Mason? HarperCollins

Other People’s Houses by Clare

Mackintosh - When the body of an estate

agent is found in an upturned kayak on a

lake, DC Ffion Morgan quickly realises the

accident has been staged. There’s no love

lost between Ffion and estate agents,

but who hated this one enough to want

her dead? Over the border in Cheshire,

DS Leo Brady has his own property

nightmare on his hands. The Hill is the

kind of place where owners relish people

gawking at their multi-million pound

homes but now someone is breaking

and entering their houses one by one.

Ffion and Leo are about to learn that

people will pay a high price to keep their

secrets behind closed doors. Even on the

most desirable street, there’s a dark side!

Little Brown

Dead Man’s List by Karen Rose - When

a mutilated body is found in the desert

outside San Diego, any number of

people could be on the suspect list. The

victim, local councillor Brooks Munro,

was a hated figure. And those who

abducted him and his prized Ferrari

went to extreme lengths to cover their

tracks and wipe out any witnesses. As the

investigation goes deeper, a blackmail

scheme worth millions of dollars is

uncovered. Brooks had been forcing

money from his wealthy acquaintances,

and had kept a list of their wrongdoings

as protection - to be revealed on his

death. But now he is dead. Where’s the

list? Who was helping with the extortion

scheme? And who would kill to stop the

blackmail and prevent the list becoming

public? Headline

Raise a glass to the teetotallers, and

those of us taking a breather from

alcohol, with the newly-launched

Van Hunks Non-Alcoholic Sparkling

Wine. This non-alcoholic sparkling

wine has aromas of strawberries and

ripe plums, while its soft effervescence

and fresh summer fruit flavours lead

to a lingering finish. With less than

0.5 per cent alcohol, it’s crafted using

traditional winemaking methods

and advanced de-alcoholisation to

preserve its natural flavours. This is

more than just a stand-in for the real

thing – it’s a lovely alternative. R120.

Get ready. Steady. GO!

Look Good, Feel Good, Play Good is a book about Nike

sportswear and what it means to be women. The garments we

wear, and why we wear them. It’s about athletes, from the elite to

the aspiring amateur, running marathons or running errands. It’s

about the spaces we perform in, and the way we use clothing to

do it ... from the track and the fitness studio, to an online world and

the street outside. More than 350 pages and 575 images, steeped

in narrative, history, and Nike’s abundant archive, the book’s rich

imagery spans reproductions of Nike’s trade catalogues from the

1980s, period and contemporary photos, sketches, adverts, fabric

swatches, seasonal colour palettes, original design proposals and

patents, logos, product and campaign shots, and everything in

between. Each chapter also features interviews with Nike athletes,

trainers, and collaborators. Phaidon, R2400

The ocean is an

icon of our summer

of happy memories -

and there’s no wonder

why. Swimming in

just the physical side.

Saltwater Cure draws

on compelling, lifeaffirming

stories about

the healing power of

the ocean - whether it

the start of a lifelong

Journalist Ali Gripper shares the experiences of people

Saltwater Cure reminds us of nature’s restorative power

An inspiring

start to the year

Noelene Pegden and Veronica Peacock

The Umhlanga Women Achievers (UWA) started the year with

their 30th AGM at Northwood Crusaders Sports Club, bringing

together a group of women committed to growth, success, and

genuine connections. The event was more than just networking

– it was about building meaningful relationships and setting

purposeful intentions for the year ahead. Key takeaways from

the speakers included the importance of genuine connection –

focusing on what you can do for others first, rather than just what

you can gain. Attendees were encouraged to approach each

meeting with intention, being present, engaged, and open to new

opportunities. With these insights in mind, UWA members are ready

to make 2025 a year of impact, collaboration, and success!

Champion powerlifter, strength

and performance coach…

and mom-to-be – Lil Bianchi

is excited to be stepping into a

new season.

12 Get It • Ballito • Umdloti • Umhlanga March 2025

When we arrived at Lil’s

beautiful Umhlanga

home, we expected to

meet a powerhouse.

What we didn’t expect

was to leave feeling like we’d caught

up with an old friend. Warm, downto-earth,

and refreshingly candid, Lil is

proof that strength is about so much

more than lifting heavy weights. It's

about cultivating mental resilience,

embracing challenges and pushing

through the limits we set for ourselves.

Born in Rustenburg, Lil spent time in

Hilton and Cape Town before settling

in Umhlanga in 2009. "I don't think I

can live anywhere else in the world. I

love that we're in a small town in a big

city," she says.

Lil discovered powerlifting by

accident. She started her career in

hospitality, following in her parents’

footsteps, but the demanding

industry led her down a path of

unhealthy habits. "I came from a lot

of bad decisions and bad habits, and

I knew that I needed to turn my life

around. I was active and involved in

sports when I was at school. I played

hockey and athletics provincially, and

I knew I needed to turn my life around

through sport."

At the gym, she found herself drawn

to strength training. "I became so

obsessive over human performance

and what the body was able to do."

One day, a man watching her train

encouraged her to enter a powerlifting

competition. "I had no idea what I was

doing, but I thought, why not?" That

moment changed everything.

Strength beyond the gym

Now a world champion powerlifter

– she holds 48 national records, 19

world records and 6 European records

– Lil is passionate about helping

others build both physical and mental

resilience. "Powerlifting saved my life.

It shifted my focus. It built my mental

strength and confidence."

For Lil, strength training is about far

more than aesthetics – it’s about mental

well-being. "Powerlifting is for people

who are accustomed to a struggle,"

she explains. "It helped me handle my

divorce better. It helped me handle

going through covid and transforming

my business. I feel like if I didn't have the

mental strength to do those things,

I would have absolutely collapsed."

She sees the same transformation in

her clients. "Once you've sustained

a major injury in sports, you get this

block and you're scared. I help them

build their confidence again in their

own bodies, and to see what their

body's capable of." Whether it’s elite

athletes recovering from injuries

or everyday people overcoming

their own challenges, Lil helps them

reclaim their strength – inside and

out.

Lil is also determined to break the

stereotype that powerlifting is

reserved for men or that it's too

intense for women. “Women are often

intimidated by strength training or

think that it will make them bulky, but

that’s not the case,” she explains.

A new chapter begins

After a decade of dedicating herself to

her sport, Lil is now stepping into an

entirely new and unexpected phase

of life – motherhood. "I was told by

three doctors that I was infertile, so

my pregnancy was totally unplanned."

She’s excited to embrace what the

future holds, and to continue sharing

her expertise with others. "I'm going

to communicate to a whole new

audience now – women going

through pregnancy and new moms.

How to train through pregnancy;

the mental side of it – I'm embracing

every element."

Finding balance

Outside of training, Lil loves spending

time at home with her partner, his two

sons, and their two dogs. "We love to

host friends. We're homebodies!"

As she prepares to welcome her baby,

Lil is more excited than ever about the

journey ahead. "I'm in a completely

different place. I'm so excited about

this new journey."

And one thing is certain – whether

she’s lifting weights or lifting a

newborn, Lil Bianchi is stronger

than ever.

FREDDY L is a group of talented

musicians – and they’re making

waves on the North Coast with

their unique sound, authentic

energy and community spirit.

FREDDY L features three members: Freddy,

the charismatic vocalist and writer; Reece, a

powerhouse drummer and producer; and Niclaus,

the talented bassist and producer. What started

as Freddy’s solo project evolved into a cohesive

trio. Reece joined the band after reaching out

via Instagram, and Niclaus came on board after

meeting Reece in Cape Town, while studying at a

music college.

CRAFTING A UNIQUE SOUND

Freddy describes the band’s music as “alternative

Indie soul” but says their sound shifts and evolves,

reflecting their creative energy and diverse musical

influences. All their tracks are original, offering

audiences an authentic listening experience.

While differences in music taste sometimes spark

debates, the band sees this as a strength. “It’s good

to argue,” says Freddy. “It pushes us!”

MAKING THEIR MARK

Based on the North Coast has its challenges. Freddy

admits that opportunities for live performances

are often limited to bigger festivals or gigs in

Durban. But the band turned this obstacle into an

opportunity, creating The Kerb, a DIY music event

series that began with pop-up gigs on makeshift

stages.

Today, The Kerb is a thriving monthly event bringing

together local artists, fans and businesses at 22 Sandra

Road. From its humble beginnings on wooden pallets,

the event has grown into a platform for diverse music

genres and a hub for community collaboration.

LIVE AND LOUD

For the band, nothing beats the thrill of performing

live. “We never sound exactly the same at any show,”

Freddy says. Their ability to adapt to the vibe of

their audience makes every performance unique.

With an album in the works and plans to tour

internationally, FREDDY L is dreaming big. Europe,

especially cities such as Berlin and Warsaw, is calling.

“Our music does well overseas,” says Freddy, hinting

at exciting opportunities abroad.

FREDDY L’s music is available on Spotify, Apple

Music and other streaming platforms.

inspiring her to strengthen her mission in the States.

A WAKE-UP CALL

Although her home in Carlsbad has been spared, Clare

remains acutely aware of the destruction wreaked by

wildfires across Los Angeles and other parts of California.

“The fires here are relentless,” she says. “It feels like they’re

becoming more widespread every year, fuelled by poor

vegetation management and flammable plants like

eucalyptus.”

Clare’s observations echo broader concerns about

the region’s fire preparedness. With delayed rains and

the fierce Santa Ana winds, wildfires in California are

becoming increasingly frequent and intense. “It’s

heart-breaking to see communities uprooted,”

Clare says. “While we can’t stop the fires, we can

contribute to rebuilding.”

Through Trash4Tokens, Clare has partnered

with local organisations to provide essential

items to fire-affected communities. “Even small

actions can make a difference,” she says. “It’s about

showing up when people need help the most.”

BRIDGING TWO CONTINENTS

Clare’s roots remain firmly in South Africa,

where Litter4Tokens has revolutionised

waste collection. The initiative offers

tokens to community members in

exchange for bags of litter, which

can then be redeemed for food and

essential supplies. Since its inception

in 2015, the programme has collected

over 2.6 million bags of waste and

diverted nearly 3 000 tonnes

of litter.

A VISION FOR THE FUTURE

Clare remains optimistic. “Every challenge is an

opportunity to innovate,” she says. Her efforts with

Trash4Tokens in California and Litter4Tokens in South

Africa are proof that small, community-driven solutions

can address global problems. “From waste to wildfires,

we’re committed to turning adversity into action.”

Growing up

green

When Brittany Gould and

Tammy Mack became moms

for the first time, they quickly

realised two universal

truths about baby gear: it’s

expensive, and you don’t use

half of it for as long as you

think you will.

From the moment their

babies – born just two

weeks apart – arrived,

the two friends found

themselves navigating the

endless cycle of baby must-haves,

only to discover that many items

barely made it out of the box before

their little ones outgrew them. As

retail professionals, Brittany and

Tammy knew there had to be a better

way. So, they launched the Growing

Up Green Fair, a quarterly event in

Umhlanga where parents can buy and

sell high-quality, pre-loved baby items

at a fraction of the retail price.

Text: Jennifer Campbell

A WIN FOR THE PLANET

Baby essentials don’t come cheap,

and new parents often feel pressured

to buy everything brand new. But,

as Brittany points out, many of these

items are barely used before babies

outgrow them. “If I had to sit and calculate

how much money I spent and

how much of it I actually used, it just

doesn’t make sense,” she says.

The Growing Up Green Fair helps

parents save money while promoting

a more sustainable approach to

shopping. Instead of contributing to

the endless cycle of buying new and

tossing out barely-used items, parents

can give their baby gear a second life

– whether it’s clothing, books, toys, or

high-ticket items like prams.

“It’s more than just a market,” says

Tammy. “It’s about making parenting a

little less overwhelming, a little more

affordable and a whole lot greener.”

Don’t

miss the

next fair, which

will take place on

15 March at Trinity

Methodist Church,

4 Daventry Place,

La Lucia.

QUALITY OVER QUANTITY

Unlike online marketplaces where

buyers and sellers have to navigate

meetups and uncertain quality, the

Growing Up Green Fair is carefully curated.

Brittany and Tammy personally

vet each item to ensure only top-quality

brands make the cut.

Popular international brands like

Zara, H&M, and Cotton On fly off

the racks, and big-ticket items are

especially in demand. “Last year, we

sourced three DockATots (multi-functional

loungers), and they sold almost

instantly,” Brittany says.

A HASSLE-FREE EXPERIENCE

For parents looking to declutter, the

fair offers a seamless alternative to

the hassle of online selling. Vendors

simply drop off their items the day before

the fair, and Brittany and Tammy

handle everything from setup to sales.

After the fair, vendors collect any unsold

items and receive their earnings,

minus a small percentage.

“Our vendors love it because it’s so

easy,” Tammy says. “They don’t have

to sit around all day trying to sell –

everything is taken care of for them.”

FROM FRIENDSHIP TO

COMMUNITY

Brittany and Tammy’s journey from

co-workers to moms to business

partners has been a natural one.

Having worked together previously,

they understand how to run a smooth

operation. But beyond the logistics,

they’re also motivated by the community

they are building. The fair has

become a place where parents can

connect, swap stories, and support

each other, all while making more

sustainable choices.

With plans to expand to bigger

venues and potentially other areas,

the Growing Up Green Fair is growing

just as fast as their little ones. And for

Brittany and Tammy, that’s the most

rewarding part.

“Our babies were the inspiration

behind this,” says Tammy. “And now,

it’s grown into something bigger than

we ever imagined.”

As the seasons shift, so do the trends shaping

our wardrobes, homes and dining tables.

We caught up with industry experts from

some of Ballito Lifestyle Centre’s fabulous

stores to uncover the must-have styles,

colours and flavours for autumn.

What colours and prints are trending for

autumn clothing, and how can they be

styled effortlessly?

Global trends for autumn/winter are showing

colours that connect to nature and also

represent stability. We are loving Matcha

Green and Red Orange, Italian Plum and

Apricot.

Print wise, florals are huge, with camo and

animal print not far behind. The way to wear these

prints is to go big or go home! Think printed shirt

with matching pants, and teamed with a jacket, coat or

scarf in a solid colour. Make sure to add an accessory in one of

the solid winter colours, and if you are brave add an extra touch of print

too! - Morgan Tremearne, Owner of Holiday Ballito.

What’s one statement

accessory that can

elevate a simple outfit

for the season?

As we step into Autumn

2025, fashion takes a bold

yet playful turn, blending

nostalgia with modern edge.

Enter Saint&Summer’s JOJO Jelly Mini

handbag on chain with top handle, a

statement piece that perfectly captures

this season’s biggest trends— vibrant

colour, and vintage revival.

The jelly texture taps into the ongoing

love for Y2K aesthetics, offering a fresh

and contemporary take on the iconic

structured handbag. Its rich cornflower

blue hue perfectly complements seasonal

autumnal tones of chocolate brown,

warm terracotta and charcoal, making it

an effortless way to inject vibrancy into

neutral autumn palettes. Meanwhile,

the silver chain strap adds a touch of

sophistication, elevating the bag from

playful to polished.

- Basia Johnston, Trend and Design at

Saint&Summer.

What styles of footwear are trending for autumn, and what makes them a

great choice for the season?

Last spring, we introduced our fisherman sandal, and the response was

overwhelming. As the trend continues to grow, we’re excited to highlight its

versatility as a perfect autumn choice. Our fisherman sandal combines the

breathability of a sandal with the sophistication of a pump, making it ideal for

cooler days. Crafted from high-quality leather, this shoe

only gets better with time. Suitable for wear throughout

the year, it’s a wise investment for any wardrobe. - Sarah

Gedye, brand manager at Froggie.

Styling tips:

• Dress it: Layer fisherman sandals with flowy dresses

and florals for a feminine touch.

• Jean it: Pair fisherman sandals with any jeans for a

classic, casual combo.

• Sock it : Add a pop of colour and texture with cozy socks as we get closer to winter.

• Linen layers: Linen shorts and trousers work beautifully with fisherman sandals for

warmer or cooler weather. Nothing like linen and leather for timeless style.

What seasonal produce should shoppers

look out for this autumn?

Autumn on the North Coast is a gorgeous

time of year for seasonal organic produce.

Along with the cooler weather, we see

all our greens like lettuce, kale, spinach,

leeks and celery return after the crazy

summer heat. You’ll also find an early

citrus harvest in store from mandarins to

oranges and grapefruit along with sweet

potatoes, green beans, green mielies and

brinjals. But the firm favourite for autumn is

always avocados, they’re perfectly in season,

freshly picked and delivered straight from the

farm. There’s something quite magical about farm-to-fork,

knowing your veg is super fresh, nutrient dense and plastic-free. -

Dawn de Beer, owner of Home Grown Whole Foods.

What are the top interior design trends for autumn, and

how can homeowners easily update their space?

At Weylandts, our ethos is about investing in timeless pieces that

journey with you and your home. Celebrating neutral

tones complemented by rich hues and deep

chocolate textures will speak to any season. The

latest Bold furniture range and Ceramic Stool

collection both showcase the raw beauty of

natural materiality and craftsmanship. From

locally-sourced leathers, woven fabrics,

and warm amber woods, our furniture

and homeware pieces are designed with

longevity in mind. - Lian Louw, retail

manager at Weylandts.

All about the

blooms

Text: Jennifer Campbell

22 Get It • Ballito • Umdloti • Umhlanga March 2025

There’s a certain magic in starting your day surrounded

by vibrant blooms. We visited The Flower Farm in Ballito

where flower picking isn’t just an activity – it’s also an

opportunity to immerse yourself in nature’s beauty.

The Flower Farm is the brainchild of Sam Sparrow and her partner,

Dale Grobler. They stepped into the world of floriculture in

2021, an idea born out of necessity during the covid pandemic.

Dale, previously a successful organic farmer supplying highend

restaurants, faced significant challenges as the lockdowns

impacted the hospitality industry. Meanwhile, Sam brought her

background in advertising to the table. Together, they ventured into the flower

business, which quickly exceeded their expectations, selling out every season.

Recently, the couple made the bold decision to relocate their thriving enterprise

from Hillcrest to Ballito, where the location, weather and audience in Ballito are

perfectly suited to growing and selling flowers.

A HANDS-ON FLORAL

EXPERIENCE

On our visit, The Flower

Farm was a kaleidoscope

of colours. Zinnias in

shades of pink, red and

yellow stood proudly,

delicate flamingo wings

swayed gently in the

breeze, and striking

cockscomb beckoned to

be picked. Armed with

scissors and a bucket, we

wandered through rows

of blooms, selecting our

favourites.

After we had carefully

filled our buckets, Sam

led us to a shaded

spot for a bouquetmaking

workshop. With

contagious enthusiasm, she shared tips on pairing colours, layering textures and

creating arrangements that felt effortlessly elegant.

COMMITTED TO SUSTAINABILITY

The Flower Farm is more than a place to gather flowers; it is a hub of sustainability

and connection. Committed to eco-friendly and organic farming practices, the

farm ensures that each bloom is cultivated with care for the environment.

Currently, the farm boasts 3 500 varieties, from zinnias and sunflowers to

amaranthus and cosmos. The selection changes with the seasons, offering a

fresh experience with each visit. Looking ahead, Sam and Dale plan to launch a

wholesale division to supply fresh, locally-grown flowers to florists, event planners

and the public.

Care for your hair

How the summer sun might be affecting your scalp and hair health

Text: Alvi Armani South Africa

When it comes to caring for one’s

skin, most people are well aware

of the need for sunscreen and

protective clothing. Yet, many neglect

a crucial area that is often exposed

to the elements: The scalp. Excessive

sun exposure can cause dryness

and irritation on this sensitive skin,

affecting the health and growth of

hair follicles over time.

According to Dr Kashmal Kalan,

Medical Director of Alvi Armani South

Africa, safeguarding the scalp from

the sun should be a key component

of anyone’s overall hair care strategy.

“The scalp is a unique area of skin. It’s

highly sensitive due to its rich network

of blood vessels and hair follicles. As

a result, prolonged exposure to UV

rays can create a hostile environment

for hair follicles, and while mild

sun exposure is normal and even

beneficial for things such as vitamin

D synthesis, unchecked and repeated

sun damage can accelerate existing

hair loss conditions.

“It’s easy to assume that hair

automatically protects the scalp, but if

you have thinning areas or if your hair

is naturally fine, the underlying scalp is

not as shielded as you might think.”

While the sun’s UV rays primarily

impact the outer layers of the skin,

these harmful effects can extend

deeper, affecting the structures that

nurture hair. Continuous exposure can

contribute to dryness, inflammation,

and free radical formation. Over

the years, these subtle injuries can

accumulate, especially in individuals

already dealing with a genetic

predisposition to conditions like

androgenetic alopecia, also known as

male and female pattern baldness.

In severe cases, such as intense

sunburns on the scalp, the skin

may even blister or peel, also

damaging hair follicles. So, although

the sun alone is unlikely to cause

permanent hair loss without

significant burning, it can exacerbate

pre-existing conditions.

Protecting against severe sun exposure

Fortunately, protecting the scalp doesn’t have to mean avoiding the outdoors

altogether. He emphasises common-sense measures as the first line of defence,

where wearing a hat is one of the simplest and most effective protective

methods. However, not all hats offer equal protection. A hat should fit

comfortably, and ideally be made from a breathable, light-reflecting material.

“If you prefer not to

wear hats or find

yourself in a situation

where a hat may not

be practical, a waterresistant,

scalp-friendly

sunscreen can also

offer protection. When

applying sunscreen

to yourself or your

children’s bodies and

faces, remember to

work it into the scalp

as well.”

Timing and duration of sun exposure

Sun intensity varies throughout the day and changes with the seasons. What

might be safe around 5pm as the sun sets could be harmful at noon when the

sun is directly overhead.

“If the sun is at its peak and you’re feeling that unmistakable heat on your scalp,

it’s time to think about protection. Even an hour of strong midday sun can be

problematic for those with sensitive scalps or thinning hair. But, if you’re quickly

heading to the mall, for example, and know you won’t be in the sun for too long,

there’s probably nothing to be concerned about,” notes Dr Kalan.

“In contrast, if you plan on spending hours outdoors at the beach, or in the pool,

at a braai, or hiking, especially during peak summer months, take your scalp

protection as seriously as you do your skin and eyes.”

Sun exposure post-hair restoration procedures

For those who have recently undergone a hair transplant or other hair restoration

treatment, scalp protection is all the more critical. In the first four to six weeks

after a transplant, the healing tissue is extremely delicate. Significant sun

exposure during this period can interfere with proper healing, potentially leading

to scarring or poor graft survival. Patients need to take extra precautions during

these times.

“Even after the initial healing phase, newly transplanted follicles remain sensitive

for some time. Minimising exposure and protecting the scalp ensures that the

implants can take root and thrive. We want to create the ideal environment for

the transplanted graphs to take and grow, as giving them a healthy, protected

space will ensure better long-term results.

“So, by acknowledging the role sun exposure plays in damaging hair follicles and

accelerating hair loss, people can take proactive steps to preserve their scalp

health. Whether through smart clothing choices, applying specialised protective

creams or powders, or simply being aware of peak UV hours, these measures are

simple yet powerful,” concludes Dr Kalan.

Leading with

Sholain Perumal, CEO of The Gold Bar, and mum of

a gorgeous 3-month-old baby, Shreyan, talks about

navigating the challenges of being both a mother

and CEO of multiple businesses.

love

Sholain always thought that to build an empire and shatter

glass ceilings, she would have to sacrifice having a family. But

she has now realised that in today's world, women can break

barriers and redefine success on their own terms. “One of the most

powerful ways we can do this is by embracing the roles of both CEO

and mother. With the right mindset, strategies, and support, it's possible

to excel at both – and do it with confidence,” she says.

Being a mother and a CEO often means juggling the demands of a highprofile

career while also meeting the needs of a family. It involves sleepless

nights and busy days. For Sholain, the challenges are real, but the rewards

are endless. “I am learning to multitask on a different level, between trying

to be the best mum I can be and running my businesses,” she shares.

Sholain’s businesses include The Gold Bar, a gold

recycling company, with six stores around the

country, including a branch at Ballito Junction;

and Sensational Hair, Nails & Beauty with one

branch on Chartwell Drive in Umhlanga and one in

Cornubia Mall.

“Being a CEO and a mother can feel overwhelming,

but when done with passion and purpose, it can be

incredibly fulfilling,” she says. “In the end, it’s about

embracing the challenges, trusting in your abilities, and

knowing that you can thrive in both your professional

and personal life. Every day is a new opportunity to grow,

learn, and show up for both your company and your family.

By doing so, you set an example for the next generation that

Strength

the storm in

32-year-old Caron Botha, a marketing executive from Ballito, was diagnosed with

cervical cancer last year. The last few months have been filled with heartbreak, hope

and hard-won wisdom.

“It’s been a rollercoaster,” Caron admits, reflecting on her

diagnosis of stage 3 cervical cancer. The road leading to this

moment was fraught with misdiagnoses, dismissals and an

endless maze of medical visits. But, through it all, she has

remained tenacious.

The very beginning

Caron’s health struggles began some time before her

cancer diagnosis. Unexplained pelvic pain led her

through numerous consultations with doctors who often

overlooked key indicators. “At one point, I was in so much

pain I couldn’t function without painkillers. I went to

countless doctors, and still, no one could tell me what was

wrong,” she says.

Her frustration grew when a pap smear in 2022 revealed

abnormalities, but the urgency of follow-up care wasn’t

communicated. By the time the cancer was detected in

2024, it had progressed significantly. “If someone had just

told me two years ago that my cells were abnormal, things

could have been different,” she says.

Fighting back

Despite these challenges, Caron refused to let the system

break her. When traditional medicine failed to address her

pain or provide clarity, she explored integrative approaches.

She delved into dietary changes, holistic treatments and

genetic testing to understand her body better. “You are

what you eat, therefore you are what your body can break

down and absorb,” she says. “Learning the importance

of diet, understanding my genetic predispositions and

working with integrative doctors has been a gamechanger.”

Caron’s unwavering determination also led to a lifechanging

decision to preserve her fertility. With the help of a

BackaBuddy fundraiser, she successfully underwent an egg

retrieval process, resulting in 16 embryos. “The support from

friends, family, and even strangers was overwhelming. It

showed me how much love there is in the world,” she says.

Finding a community

While struggling with her diagnosis and treatment, Caron

found strength in community and connection. Her running

club, church community, her friends, and even local

wellness spaces like Kico Life Wellness Hub became sources

of solace. “The support has been incredible,” she says. “You

think you’re alone, but you’re not. People are out there,

ready to help if you just ask.”

Lessons for life

Caron’s experience has ignited a passion for advocacy. She

urges others to prioritise their health, seek second opinions,

and educate themselves about their bodies. “In my case, the

doctors only kept treating my symptoms instead of finding

the root causes, which happens often. You need to be your

own advocate.”

Her message to others facing similar battles is clear: “Cancer

is not a death sentence. Take a step back, do your research,

and don’t make decisions out of fear. There’s hope, even

when it feels like there isn’t.”

Caron’s journey is far from over, but her courage and

determination light the way for countless others navigating

their own health struggles. “If my story can help one person,

it’s all worth it,” she says.

shaping tomorrow’s leaders.

Set in an idyllic, safe and secure, private campus just a short

exceptional matric results are the culmination of a journey

that began long before students reached their final year.

Crawford International North Coast’s approach to education

is designed to nurture each student’s potential, focusing on

personal growth, leadership, academic achievement and

preparation for the future.

Outstanding results

This year, Crawford International North Coast students

Mushrooms!

Mushrooms tick so many boxes when it comes to nutrition and health.

And now another ticked box for being a trendy crunchy snack.

Recipes: The South African Mushroom Farmers’ Association

Food trends for this year clearly show

climate concerns, sustainability issues,

food safety and personal wellness,

as well, obviously, as quality, with

consumers looking for ingredients

with features such as health benefits,

nutrition, freshness and shelf life,

and naturalness. And those selecting

to follow a plant based diet want

choices that are less processed, more

natural, have better taste and texture,

offer health benefits, and support

the environment.

Mushrooms tick all these boxes,

and more. They’re hugely nutritious,

boasting robust amounts of

antioxidants, selenium, riboflavin and

vitamin D, and with fresh mushrooms

being the only significant source of

plant-based vitamin D! Fungi are also

low in sodium and contain both fibre

and plant protein.

Fresh mushroom varieties like big

browns, which are readily available in

every supermarket, are perfect meat

substitutes – without having to really

change your favourite recipes as the

meaty texture and rich flavour of

mushrooms make the swap seamless.

Another trend that mushrooms are

leaning into is the crunch ... listed as

the texture of the moment for 2025.

Think crispy grains, crunchy granola,

roasted chickpeas, mushroom chips

... all added to dishes give that extra

texture we love.

So, using your dehydrator or oven set

to low ... mushrooms are moving into

crispy, crunchy territory, and we’re on

board for the experience!

Alternatively, you can explore crunch

in other, less time-consuming ways,

like rustling up a batch of mushroom

popcorn ... great for snacking and

sprinkling over other foods to get that

crisp finishing texture.

Mushroom Popcorn

This mushroom popcorn is great for snacking or for sprinkling over other foods to

get that crisp finishing texture.

Ingredients:

300g baby button mushrooms; ½ cup Panko breadcrumbs; ½ cup biltong dust; 1

cup plain popcorn; 1 tsp chilli flakes; ½ lemon, zested; 1 Tbsp sesame seeds; 2 Tbsp

hoisin sauce; 2 Tbsp soy sauce; olive oil for frying

Method:

Blitz the popcorn in a food processor until you’ve made chunky crumbs.

Mix the panko, popcorn crumbs, biltong dust, chilli flakes, sesame seeds and lemon

zest in a large mixing bowl and set aside.

In a non-stick frying pan add a drizzle of olive oil and sauté the mushrooms until

they release their water and begin to brown. Add the soy sauce and hoisin and roll

them around to glaze each one. Allow the sauce to reduce and become sticky.

Toss the glazed mushrooms in the popcorn mix making sure each one is

well coated.

Serve as a snack in jars or cones at a party or while watching your favourite TV show.

Mushroom Tapenade

A delicious spread for toast, bruschetta

or sourdough.

Ingredients:

500g mixed mushrooms (half portabellini,

half white button); 4 garlic cloves, finely

diced; olive oil for frying; 2 Tbsp capers,

drained; juice of 1 lemon; 100g kalamata

olives, pitted; 50g walnuts or pecans; 3

anchovy fillets; 1 tsp chilli flakes; ½ tsp freshly

ground black pepper; 1 handful Italian

parsley, stalks removed; toasted sourdough

for serving

Method:

Heat a drizzle of olive oil in a large pan and

fry the mushrooms until they have released

all of their water and begin to brown.

Add the garlic and cook until golden.

Into the bowl of a food processor add the

cooked mushrooms along with the rest of

the ingredients.

Process and pulse until you get a fine mix

but do not over mix into a paste.

Serve the tapenade with slices of hot

sourdough toast and an extra sprinkle of

chilli flakes.

Brewing brilliance

The team from Skyline Coffee, Salt Rock.

Recognising the vital role coffee shops play

in our communities, the Battle of the Beans

competition set out to crown the very best

across KwaZulu-Natal – and some of our very

own local gems shone bright!

Owner of Coffee LAB, Sbu Nkolothi.

Text: Jennifer Campbell

Organised by Coffee Colab, a non-profit

organisation committed to elevating café

culture, Battle of the Beans aimed to spotlight

the independent coffee shops that not only

survived but thrived despite the challenges of

recent years. The competition involved over

eight months of rigorous judging by a panel of

30 incognito experts, all in search of exceptional coffee.

Ingrid Shevlin, founder of Shrewd Food and a respected

food critic, oversaw the competition to ensure it

maintained the highest standards. Judges evaluated each

café on the quality of their cappuccinos and espressos, as

well as the overall coffee experience.

“In KZN, coffee shops are the cornerstone of the hospitality

industry, offering spaces where you can linger over a freshly

brewed espresso or a creamy cappuccino while chatting

with friends. When thinking about our coffee shops, we

realised the importance of affordable community spaces,”

Ingrid explains. “While many restaurants did not survive

Covid, most coffee shops did! They kept the industry and

the spirit of cafe society alive and provided places for

people to meet, work and enjoy a bean brew. We felt it was

important to recognise that and the role that these shops

will play in the future.”

The Coffee

LAB team.

And the winners are...

The highly anticipated Battle of the Beans Awards

Ceremony took place at the Selati Sugar head office in

Westville, where 27 standout coffee shops from across KZN

were recognised. The coveted title of KwaZulu-Natal’s Best

Coffee Shop was awarded to Coffee LAB in Ballito, owned

by Sbu Nkolothi.

Originally from Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe, Sbu’s coffee

journey began as a golf caddy before he moved to Durban

in 2010. After years of working in hospitality, his passion for

coffee led him to train baristas and eventually open Coffee

LAB in 2020. “Coffee brings people together. It connects

them. When I make coffee, I’m able to engage and build

relationships. I love people,” Sbu says.

Another local favourite, Skyline Coffee in Salt Rock,

claimed second runner-up. Owner Darren Lewis, a former

regional manager for Vida e, took over the café in 2023,

drawn to its strong community spirit. “A great coffee shop

is about serving consistently excellent coffee and food,

knowing every regular’s order, and creating a welcoming

environment. We have over 100 regulars who visit five to six

times a week,” Darren says.

The stars of the North Coast and Umhlanga

With over 250 coffee shops visited, the top cafés from the

North Coast and Umhlanga made their mark:

North Coast top three

• Coffee LAB, Ballito (Overall Winner of Battle of

the Beans 2024)

• Skyline Coffee, Salt Rock (2nd Runner-Up in KZN)

• Foam Coffee, Umdloti

Umhlanga top three

• Tiki Tonga Coffee, Chartwell Drive

• African Roots Coffee, Lagoon Drive

• Moto Café, Meridian Drive

Melanie Winter from Coffee Magazine, who was part of the

final judging panel, summed up the experience: “Specialty

coffee may still be niche, but that’s perfectly fine! The

overall standard was exceptionally high, from service and

community spirit to beautifully poured coffees and unique

flavours. I’m proud of the cafés in KZN!”

The Battle of the Beans 2024 not only crowned the best

coffee shop in the province, but it also highlighted the

incredible passion, resilience and community spirit of KZN’s

coffee scene. Here’s to another year of outstanding coffee

experiences right on our doorstep!

The

of layers

With a brush in hand and creativity as her driving force,

Petra Gevers transforms instinct into art.

Text: Jennifer Campbell

When you look at Petra’s latest

paintings, you see energy and

movement. Her style is bold and

unapologetic, a blend of intuitive

brushstrokes and raw textures. “I

think of it as drawing with a brush,”

Petra says with a smile, describing her

method. Every piece is an exploration

of colour and form, with nature

serving as her primary muse.

It wasn’t always this way. She initially

studied architecture, but the discipline’s

rigid structure wasn’t a natural fit for her.

“I’m an immediate creative person,” she

explains. “Architecture felt too long and

drawn out.”

So, she pivoted, leaving behind

the architectural drafts and diving

instead into fine arts. After a brief stint

overseas, Petra returned to South

Africa to study at the Michaelis School

of Fine Art at UCT. Cape Town’s vibrant

and artistic atmosphere became the

perfect backdrop for her budding

creativity.

A KALEIDOSCOPE OF CREATIVITY

After art school, she began handpainting

fabric with Renaissanceinspired

designs. Her knack for

creating led her to co-found a

business with her sister, making

driftwood lamps and chandeliers

so beautiful they even caught the

president’s eye.

From whimsical children’s illustrations

to experimental watercolour and pastel

creations, Petra has explored a variety

of mediums over the years. Each phase

reflects her restless curiosity and an

unwavering drive to create.

COMING FULL CIRCLE

After moving to Johannesburg

and eventually back to her roots

in KZN, Petra has settled back into

painting full-time, and it’s clear she’s

found her groove. Her art today

blends spontaneity with a deep

understanding of form and technique.

She thrives on the immediacy of

the first brushstroke, embracing

imperfections as part of the process.

Her move to Sheffield has brought

her closer to a like-minded creative

community. “It’s wonderful to be

supported and welcomed by the local

artists and gallery. This is really helpful

in building confidence and expanding

one’s painting language,” she says.

Petra’s work continues to evolve,

finding its way into exhibitions and

private collections. For her, the joy lies

in pushing boundaries – mixing her

experience in design, illustration and

fine art to create something uniquely

hers.

Coastal

opulence

Nestled amid lush greenery and offering breath-taking

views, interior designer Frans Alexander’s private home

embodies the elegance of Mediterranean villa-style

architecture.

Frans Alexander’s design philosophy – "Creating a space that is unique and

reflects the client's personality, while remaining functional, timeless, and

comfortable" – is perfectly realised in his personal retreat. Every corner of the villa

showcases a harmonious blend of opulence and practicality.

Architectural features

The overall design combines the elegance and charm of coastal living with

sophisticated, enduring design elements. He incorporated natural materials like

stone, marble, and wrought-iron accents, creating a connection to both nature

and tradition. The architecture features arched doorways, large balconies, and

expansive windows that invite in the surrounding landscape.

Colour and texture

Neutral tones, such as ivory, beige, navy blue and hints of black are

complemented by rich textures and luxurious fabrics, including silk, linen, and

velvet. The villa and outdoor spaces overlook lush gardens, a pool area, and

outdoor dining areas perfect for entertaining. The upstairs penthouse style

space and roof top entertainment area are private and allow the owner to

soak up the sea views. The overall feel of the home is one of effortless luxury,

with an emphasis on comfort, beauty, and a deep connection to the natural

environment.

A careful balance

The balance between opulence and understated beauty ensures that the rooms

feel cohesive and harmonious. No detail is too small to be considered; from the

sculptural lines of the seating to the delicate finishes of cabinetry, each element

contributes to the overall aesthetic of the villa.

The villa’s interior is further

elevated by the exquisite

archways, each finished with

beautiful moulding details. These

delicate architectural features

seamlessly blend with the overall

aesthetic, adding a touch of

sophistication and grandeur to

every room.

Art, commissioned and handselected

with care, adorns the

walls, each piece specifically

chosen to complement the

character and atmosphere of the

individual spaces.

Making a statement

To complete the luxurious

ambiance, the walls of each room

are dressed in imported wallpaper,

chosen not only for its beauty

but also for its ability to enhance

the sense of depth and texture.

Together, the moulding, art, and

wallpaper amplify the home’s

intrinsic value, transforming the

villa into a space where beauty and

function are intertwined.

Tips from the designer

Frans Alexander offers some guidance when

it comes to achieving this striking look…

Designing the style and interior of a villa is a

complex task that involves numerous factors

to achieve the desired outcome. Seeking

professional advice is highly recommended,

as mistakes can be costly.

If you prefer to try it yourself, start with

neutral colours as a foundation. This provides

a versatile base that can be easily adapted.

Additionally, gather inspiration from

magazines and online sources to refine your

ideas and ensure a cohesive design.

It is important to always consider the home’s

architecture, layout, room size, and external

elements. For example, placing many smaller

furniture pieces in a small room can make the

space feel even more cramped. Thoughtful

planning and consideration of these aspects will

help create a harmonious and functional interior.
