Brilliant new releases for this month’s book club
Bad Publicity by Bianca Gillam -
When Andie lands her dream job as
a senior book publicist, she’s ready to
take the publishing world by storm.
Until her first day, when she discovers
that her biggest author is Jack
Carlson. The boy who ruined her life
in university. Who she hasn’t spoken
to in five years. Who is still infuriatingly
hot and now incredibly successful.
And who she has to travel with on
a book tour, part of a campaign she
cannot mess up if she wants to keep
her job. One month on tour with Jack,
visiting some of the most romantic
spots in Europe. Oh boy! Bloomsbury
I Bet You’d Look Good in a Coffin by
Katy Brent - Kitty Collins is a serial killer.
She doesn’t want to kill. It’s just so
hard to resist. Some men really, really
deserve it. Men like Blaze Bundy, an
anonymous influencer spreading
misogyny online. He’s making it very
hard for her to control her murderous
urges. Meanwhile she’s in the South of
France to watch her mother marry a
man Kitty’s never met. She should be
drinking cocktails and focusing on
her tan, not plotting a murder. But a
woman’s work is never done. Surely
one more teensy little kill wouldn’t
hurt, would it? Harper Collins
Nesting by Roisin O’Donnell - One
afternoon, Ciara Fay makes a splitsecond
decision that will change
everything. Grabbing an armful of
clothes from the washing line, she
straps her two young daughters into
her car and drives away. Head spinning,
all she knows for certain is that home
is no longer safe. But with dwindling
savings, no job or family close by, and
her husband’s relentless campaign to
get her back, Ciara finds herself adrift,
facing a broken housing system and
the voice of her own demons. Leaving
is one thing ... staying away is another.
Simon & Schuster
Also ... The Ex Effect by Jo Watson - Thirteen years ago, Ash was planning the night of her life with her high school
boyfriend, Logan. They were madly in love, wild about each other, and had been waiting patiently for this moment. It was
going to be perfect. That is, until it went down in very unsexy flames. Logan disappeared and Ash was left, quite frankly and
very inconveniently, sexually cursed. After years of disastrous dating and even more disastrous sex, she’s almost given up. But
some seriously flirtatious emails with a work associate Maximillian Adam offers her hope. Because if rumour is to be believed,
Maximillian Adam might just be God’s sexual gift to women. Great fun! Headline -The Last Days of Kira Mullam by Nicci
French - Nancy had a breakdown. But she’s okay now ... she and her boyfriend have moved into a new flat, she’s doing her
breathing exercises and doctor-prescribed pills. Then her new neighbour is found dead by suicide. But Nancy saw her the
day before, and doesn’t believe she was suicidal. The police, Nancy’s boyfriend and the neighbours think Nancy’s vulnerable
and don’t believe her instincts. But what if she’s right! Simon and Schuster

Making a Killing by Cara Hunter - In
2016, eight-year-old Daisy Mason
vanished from her Oxford home. Her
disappearance made the national press
and the final culprit shocked everyone.
DCI Adam Fawley remembers the case
well, he arrested Daisy’s mother for
murder himself. But Daisy’s body was
never found. Now, forensic evidence
at a current murder scene calls the
whole case into question. DCI Adam
Fawley and the team are brought back
in to investigate. And they all have one
question. What really happened to Daisy
Mason? HarperCollins

Other People’s Houses by Clare
Mackintosh - When the body of an estate
agent is found in an upturned kayak on a
lake, DC Ffion Morgan quickly realises the
accident has been staged. There’s no love
lost between Ffion and estate agents,
but who hated this one enough to want
her dead? Over the border in Cheshire,
DS Leo Brady has his own property
nightmare on his hands. The Hill is the
kind of place where owners relish people
gawking at their multi-million pound
homes but now someone is breaking
and entering their houses one by one.
Ffion and Leo are about to learn that
people will pay a high price to keep their
secrets behind closed doors. Even on the
most desirable street, there’s a dark side!

Dead Man’s List by Karen Rose - When
a mutilated body is found in the desert
outside San Diego, any number of
people could be on the suspect list. The
victim, local councillor Brooks Munro,
was a hated figure. And those who
abducted him and his prized Ferrari
went to extreme lengths to cover their
tracks and wipe out any witnesses. As the
investigation goes deeper, a blackmail
scheme worth millions of dollars is
uncovered. Brooks had been forcing
money from his wealthy acquaintances,
and had kept a list of their wrongdoings
as protection - to be revealed on his
death. But now he is dead. Where’s the
list? Who was helping with the extortion
scheme? And who would kill to stop the
blackmail and prevent the list becoming
public? Headline

Clayton Andries
Creating a safe haven
for young readers
Clayton Andries founded the Heatherdale Book Club to promote literacy among the local youth.
Through regular reading sessions and community engagement, the club provides a space for
young people to develop essential skills and expand their knowledge beyond the classroom.
Text: Justine Fortuin Photograph: Gypseenia Lion
The Heatherdale Book Club Buddies
is more than just a reading group; it’s
a space where young people come
together to explore literature, embrace
diversity, and feel a sense of belonging.
Founded by educator Clayton Andries,
the club is a haven for those who
often feel like outsiders, offering them
a platform to engage with books and
each other in meaningful ways.
“The inspiration to start the Heatherdale
Book Club Buddies came from a deep
desire to create a space where young
people could connect, explore diverse
perspectives, and feel supported in their
individual journeys of self-discovery,”
says Clayton.
“As a strong believer in the power of
stories, I realised how important it is
for young people to have access to
literature that reflects who they are, as
well as stories that challenge them to
think critically about the world around
them.”
From the beginning, Clayton envisioned
a club that would not only promote
reading but also foster discussions
about identity, diversity, and acceptance
in a judgment-free environment. The
response from members has been
overwhelmingly positive, with many
expressing that they feel empowered to
embrace their unique identities through
literature. However, building the club
into what it is today has come with its
fair share of challenges.
“The process of establishing the club
and creating a consistent, safe space
for everyone took time, especially as we
navigated figuring out the best ways
to ensure that every voice felt heard,”
Clayton explains. “But the growth and
enthusiasm I’ve seen from the group
has been more than worth it.”
Creating an inclusive environment
was a priority from the outset. Clayton
knows first-hand how isolating it can
feel to be “the odd one out”, which is
why the club intentionally welcomes
those who might feel excluded
elsewhere.
“Many young people struggle with
fitting in, whether it’s because of
their interests, personalities, or life
experiences,” he says. “By making the
book club a safe space for those who
are typically left out, I wanted to offer
them a sense of community and
belonging. It’s not just about reading
books – it’s about creating connections,
boosting self-esteem, and showing that
everyone has something valuable to
bring to the table.”
In today’s digital age, where shortform
content and constant screen
time dominate, Clayton emphasises
the importance of developing a love
for reading among young people. He
believes books cultivate patience, focus,
and empathy in ways that digital media
often cannot.
“Reading helps children and young
adults build the ability to focus, think
critically, and engage deeply with
content, rather than skimming through
it,” he notes. “Books, especially those with
rich narratives, stimulate imagination,
empathy, and complex thinking.”
However, getting students excited
about reading isn’t always easy.
Competing with social media, video
games, and entertainment platforms
requires creative strategies. Clayton
tackles this challenge by making
reading relevant and enjoyable.
“Offering books that are aligned with
their interests, whether that’s fantasy,
sports, or graphic novels, can make
a huge difference,” he says. “I also
incorporate technology in a way that
complements reading, like using
audiobooks or interactive e-books.”
His approach to teaching English is
similarly dynamic. “I try to incorporate
my passion for books and reading in
ways that make the material feel alive
and relatable for my students,” he shares.
“I start by sharing my own excitement
for reading. Whether through
recommending books, discussing
personal favourites, or even talking
about how reading has influenced my
own life.”
Encouraging student-led discussions,
exploring contemporary literature,
and allowing learners to choose their
reading material all contribute to an
engaging classroom experience.
Beyond the classroom and the
book club, Clayton is passionate
about leadership and community

engagement. “Leadership, to me,
means inspiring and empowering
others to reach their full potential, while
also guiding them with integrity and
compassion,” he says. “It’s about leading
by example and creating an environment
where everyone feels valued, supported,
and motivated to contribute their best.”
His leadership extends to advocating
for the LGBTQIA+ community, ensuring
that young people of all identities feel
seen, heard, and respected. “Integrating
the mission of providing a safe space for
the LGBTQIA+ community into my work
with young people involves a few key
approaches,” he explains.
“I focus on creating an environment
where all young people feel seen, heard,
and respected. This means actively
promoting inclusivity in both the
language I use and the way I engage
with them.” Representation in books
and media plays a crucial role in this
mission, helping LGBTQIA+ youth feel
validated and fostering empathy among
all students.
Looking ahead, he has big dreams for
the Heatherdale Book Club Buddies. “I’m
excited to expand the club’s impact and
continuing to cultivate a community
where young people feel seen, heard,
and empowered through the stories we
explore together,” he says. “It’s been an
incredible journey, and I can’t wait to see
where it goes from here.”

Reviving Rock and Roll
for generations to come
While his journey took him through aviation, his heart always belonged to music. Now, as
the founder of The Guitar School Bloemfontein, Pieter Greyling shares his passion by teaching
aspiring musicians of all ages since 2012.
Pieter has always been
passionate about writing
music and words behind the
songs, stage was the cherry
on top. He knew that he had
to work hard to make enough money
to pursue his dream.
His early memories of music dates
back to when he was just ten years old.
His father took him to Nico Greyling’s
(current manager at TOMS) first music
shop.
“While we were there, my father asked
Nico if he could play something for us
on an electric guitar. I watched as he
tore into a Fender Stratocaster with a
star-spangled banner finish, plugged
into a Marshall amplifier – or at least,
that’s how I remember it. I had tears in
my eyes from pure joy. I was hooked,
and I’ve never looked back since,” he
narrates.
Pieter finished school in 2007 and
proceeded to obtain a private pilot’s
getitmagazine.co.za/bloemfontein
license at Westline Aviation.
“I had a deep passion for aviation, but I
couldn’t bring myself to turn away from
the music,” he expresses.
He then continued on this musical
journey by enrolling at a music college
where he delved into recording and
music production. “I returned to
Bloemfontein and set up my recording
studio, Crooked House Records. A
year later, my girlfriend (now wife)
suggested that I start teaching guitar as
a supplementary business to the studio.
I thought it was a great idea – and the
rest is history!”
Pieter then founded The Guitar School
in Bloemfontein where he teaches
young aspiring musicians the intricacies
and joys of playing the guitar. He
says he has overcome a number of
challenges that have inspired him to
learn from his mistakes.
“I don’t think my passion for this
business will ever fade. To answer your
question – I play every day. I try to
create something new on the guitar
each time I pick it up, and believe me,
with 10 fingers, 6 strings, and 24 frets,
there’s a lot you can do! I write often
and never compromise on being true
to myself,” he shares.
Lessons are tailored to each student’s
music preference. Pieter believes that it
is easier to ignite passion in someone
when you teach them something they
truly want to learn.
“Learning any instrument requires
dedication and discipline. By practising
every day, students develop these two
qualities within themselves. However,
it’s important not to start too young or
put too much pressure on a child in the
beginning – it should always remain
fun,” he says.
His teaching style is more relaxed to
accommodate the age range. Younger
students range from 6-18 with the
oldest student being 73 years old. There
is a seat for everyone at the Guitar
School Bloemfontein.
“We joke, have fun, and when a student
is having a tough day, sometimes we
just sit and listen to their favourite
guitarists, analysing their playing style.
Like I said, it always needs to stay fun!”
Pieter remains nostalgic for days when
rock, punk, alternative, and metal
teenage bands were the talk of the
town, but he hopes to keep the music
alive one strum at a time.
“We had an incredible music culture.
But for reasons unclear to me, it slowly
fizzled out and faded away. If I’m blessed
with good health, I’ll do this until the
day I die. My biggest goal for the next
ten years is to double my student count
and revive rock & roll and band culture
for the new generation of kids,” he
concludes.

Dr Mohamed Ghodhbani
Your trusted obstetrician and
gynaecologist at Emoyamed
Dr Mohamed Ghodhbani, a highly qualified obstetrician and gynaecologist, has recently joined
Emoyamed in Bloemfontein. After years of practicing in Upington, Dr Ghodhbani made the
decision to relocate to Bloemfontein, where his family has been based since 2019.

Originally from Tunisia,
Dr Ghodhbani obtained
his Doctor of Medicine
degree in 2004 before
relocating to South Africa in 2008.
He has since worked in various
hospitals in KwaZulu-Natal and the
Northern Cape, earning multiple
qualifications, including a Diploma
in Obstetrics (Dip Obst SA) and
a Fellowship in Obstetrics and
Gynaecology (FCOG SA). He later
completed his Master of Medicine
(MMed O&G) at the University of the
Free State.
His passion for obstetrics stems
from his belief in the profound role
doctors play in childbirth. “Obstetrics
is the field of medicine that brings
life,” he expressed. “Most pregnant
patients are young, healthy, and
emotionally stable, up until the
moment they give life to another
human being. That moment is
incredibly important, and I knew as
early as 2001 that I wanted to be an
obstetrician.”
His practice covers a broad
spectrum of women’s health
services, including pregnancy
care, advanced laparoscopic and
hysteroscopic surgeries, and
treatment for pelvic floor disorders.
One of the key aspects that sets
Dr Ghodhbani’s practice apart is his
commitment to utilising the latest
medical technology. He recently
introduced a state-of-the-art video
colposcope at Emoyamed, allowing
for more advanced cervical cancer
screenings. “The more advanced
our technology, the better we can
prevent and treat conditions,”
getitmagazine.co.za/bloemfontein
“The more
advanced our
technology,
the better we
can prevent
and treat
conditions.”
he noted.
Beyond traditional obstetrics,
Dr Ghodhbani also focuses on
urogynaecology and cosmetic
gynaecology.
He also emphasises the importance
of self-care for women, particularly
after childbirth. “Women should
understand that their role is not
just to give birth and raise children
while neglecting themselves. If they
experience concerns like pelvic
floor issues, laxity, or dissatisfaction
with their intimate health, there are
multiple solutions available – both
surgical and non-surgical.”
Dr Ghodhbani is also passionate
about addressing common but often
unspoken women’s health issues.
“Many women suffer in silence from
conditions like urinary incontinence,
menopause symptoms, or sexual
dysfunction. These are real issues
that can impact marriages and
quality of life, yet many women feel
ashamed to speak up. There are
effective treatments, and seeking
help should not be taboo,” he said.
He encourages women to prioritise
their health and seek medical advice
when needed.

suksesvolle toekoms is.
Gemeenskapsontwikkeling
deur onderwys
Kleuterzone se impak strek
verder as net die klaskamer.
Deur skole op te knap en in
gemeenskappe te belê, verbeter
ons nie net infrastruktuur nie,
maar skep ons ook ruimtes
waar gesinne kan groei. Een
van ons trotsste prestasies is
die skepping van meer as 1400
werksgeleenthede oor
die afgelope sewe
jaar. Hierdie werke
ondersteun
beleggers gemoedsrus gee.

Mind-blowing
Jaffles with Chase Cakes
Compiled by: Gypseenia Lion Photographs: Gypseenia Lion Source: Chase Cakes
Seven-year-old
Chase Borchard,
the young founder
of Chase Cakes,
shares his love for
the ‘mind-blowing’
taste of Jaffles –
so much so that he
wants everyone to
give them a try!
Get your mind-blowing ingredients ready:
• Bread (any of your choice)
• Butter
• Venison mince (Chase loves venison)
1 2
The Chase method:
First things first, always put butter on the
outside of the bread. This helps to make the
jaffle toasty and also to not stick to the jaffle
maker.
• Tomato and onion mix
• Guacamole
• Jaffle maker
• Gas stove
• (Alternatively, use sandwich ham and cheese)
Place one slice on the jaffle maker and start by adding your mince. I usually
make my mince to last a few days and keep it in the fridge ready to use. It’s
so simple: you cook it in a pan, I use any meat spice I can find in my mom’s
cupboard, salt, braai salt and more spice (spice it gooood because venison
has quite a strong wild taste that you need to flavour properly). I then add the
tomato and onion mix and let it simmer till it’s all cooked through and yummy.
Now, you can proceed to add this mince to your jaffle.
24 Get It Bloemfontein March 2025 getitmagazine.co.za/bloemfontein
3
Pro Tip:
Parents are advised to keep an eye on the little
ones in the kitchen. Fire and knife
safety always comes first.
Next, you add your guacamole and top it off with the last slice
and some more butter on the outside.
4
Once you close the jaffle maker, make sure you secure it tightly
with the thingamajig and proceed to remove all the bread
pieces that pop out on the sides.
The final step is to toast it over your gas stoves flames - usually
around 5 mins a side. Make sure to check it throughout that you
don’t burn it and achieve the correct amount of ‘toastie-ness’.
5
An alternative jaffle
I also like to make
that suits my little
brother’s pallet more,
is the straightforward
ham and cheese
jaffle. You can follow
the same steps. Just
replace the mince
and guacamole with
ham and cheese.

We’re planting … Petunia Strawberry Shake that looks very
much like a deliciously forbidden strawberry milkshake. There’s
also Blueberry Shake and Raspberry Shake ... novelty compact
petunias that are perfect for patio containers or hanging baskets
and are just as pretty in the garden. Plants grow 20cm high and
wide and stay round and neat. They like plenty of sun and pots
that drain well. Don’t over water petunias, rather let the topsoil dry
out slightly before watering. Feed monthly with a liquid fertiliser
to keep the plant in fine flowering form. Details: ballstraathof.co.za

A garden filled with all things
PRETTY, FRAGRANT
& DELICIOUS
Indoor plant of the month
Dracaena Lemon Lime is a striking foliage plant with green and yellow striped
leaves. It grows happily indoors in moderate to bright indirect light. It is a cultivar
of the Corn Plant and its leaves resemble the leaves of green mealies or sweet
corn, just a lot prettier. Dracaena are undemanding, easy to care for plants
that like a potting mix that drains well, and watering once the top layer of soil
feels dry to the touch. In Summer that’s about once a week. Dracaena are not
heavy feeders. A liquid fertiliser at half strength can be applied once a month
in Summer. If the plant is growing too tall, cut it back just above a leaf node to
encourage shorter, but bushier, fuller growth. Details: www.lvgplant.co.za
Veggie of the month
Radicchio Red Treviso offers
something different for the winter
salad bowl. This Italian heirloom
vegetable has bright red leaves with
a white midrib. They are slightly bitter,
adding a depth of flavour to salad.
Sow seed into a well composted
bed that will receive plenty of sun
in winter. Space plants 20cm apart.
Being shallow rooted, radicchio needs
consistently moist soil. If the soil dries
out, the leaves can become too bitter.
Harvest individual leaves when they
are young and less bitter, or wait until
the slender cabbage-like head feels
firm, about 70 days from sowing. Cut
off the head carefully above ground
level and it will regenerate. The leaves
and head can also be sautéed or
steamed. Store in a plastic bag in the
refrigerator for up to four weeks.
Details: www.rawliving.co.za
Keep garden fit this month by fertilising and sowing cool seasonal veggies
Towards the end of March sow winter flowering Namaqualand daisies, calendula, Iceland poppies and Shirley poppies. For fragrance
there are sweet peas, Virginian stocks, alyssum and nemesia. • Divide perennials like agapanthus, arum lilies, Summer flowering red
hot pokers and day lilies that have formed dense clumps. • To keep your lawn green during winter (in gardens sheltered from frost),
fertilise this month with 5:1:5 and water regularly. • From this month you can start sowing lettuce and other cool season veggies like
broad beans, beetroot, cabbage, carrot, celery, endive, kale, leeks, onion, parsley, peas, radish, spinach and turnips.

‘Chardonnay. You are an agitator, a limelight hugging
