MAKING THE

Hovea Jacket from Megan Nielsen

By Jacqui Smith

As the weather warms up, we start reaching for a lighter jacket – one that’s versatile

enough to pair with jeans for a casual look or layer over a dress or more formal outfit.

When I traveled to sunnier climes last month, I needed a straightforward outer layer

that would be versatile enough to complement most of my holiday wardrobe, whilst

also providing an extra layer for the cooler evenings. The Megan Nielsen Hovea

Jacket, paired with Modelo’s stitched-effect fabric, was the perfect choice!

MY PATTERN CHOICE

The Hovea Jacket from Megan Nielsen is incredibly versatile,

offering a variety of options. The basic design features a loose

fit with drop shoulders, and it comes in several lengths, ranging

from cropped to mid-thigh. Angled pockets add a functional

touch too.

The pattern can be made in various fabrics and finished with

a lining, left unlined or even made with quilted fabric. It also

offers the choice of fastening with ties or a tie belt.

I opted for a simple kimono-style jacket with no fastenings,

choosing the mid-length version with pockets starting at the

bottom hem. The design also features a collar band that helped

achieve the style I was looking for. I also lengthened the sleeves

slightly to allow for turn-backs, which were the perfect depth for

this design. The pattern is a quick sew! I was able to cut it out

and stitch it together in just over a day.

For speed, I overlocked the internal seam allowances, but a

Hong Kong finish with contrasting binding would have added

a lovely, neat touch. I also topstitched the band on both sides

– not just on the jacket side – which gave the front a cleaner

finish.

MY FABRIC CHOICE

The fabric I used was a mid-weight cotton with a lovely

quilted effect. While it isn’t technically quilted, it features

narrow, parallel lines stitched into the fabric, giving it a quilted

appearance. These lines are woven directly into the material,

making it lighter to wear than a traditional quilted fabric.

TIP: It’s always worth pre-washing the fabric to prevent any

shrinkage. Fortunately, there was no noticeable shrinkage, and

washing and drying gave the fabric a lovely soft finish!

THE END RESULT

Overall, the fabric and pattern complemented each other perfectly, and I’m thrilled with the result. This fabric would also work

wonderfully for trendy bomber jackets, like the Charlie Bomber Jacket by Jalie or the Amelia Jacket by Wardrobe by Me. It could

be paired with matching or contrasting knit ribbing, or alternatively, you could use the fabric itself as a casing with a wide elastic

inside for a sleek finish.

EDITORS NOTES

FRAYING RESOLVE

Julie Bonnar discusses how to solve the problem of fraying fabrics

What is fraying?

Fraying occurs when a fabric is cut and the threads that make

up the fabric begin to unravel. The extent to which a fabric will

fray depends upon a few factors like how the fabric is weaved,

how much wear the fabric experiences and the age of the

fabric.

Fraying can affect the overall look of a project and, if left

untreated, can weaken it or cause it to deteriorate. To prevent

fraying, it’s important to finish the raw edges properly.

What type of fabrics suffer

from fraying?

Fabrics with loosely woven structures are more prone to fraying

such as lightweight cotton fabrics like muslin or quilting cotton.

Natural fibres like linen with its open weave tend to fray unless

it’s hemmed or treated. Delicate fabrics like chiffon, tulle and

organza are also prone to fraying as they have finer threads.

Even synthetic fabrics like polyester and nylon will fray at the

edges if they’re not cut properly or finished correctly.

TIP: Blended cotton fabrics are less likely to fray like cotton

twill, linen, Lycra, modal, gauze, felt, fleece, wool, and hemp.

Ways to stop your fabric

from fraying:

Use an overlocker

This is one of the best ways to prevent fraying as it trims the raw

edges of the fabric and stitches them with a stretchy, reinforced

seam all in one go and gives a professional neat finish.

Choose the right stitch

If you don’t have an overlocker, a zig-zag stitch on your sewing

machine is a great alternative. By sewing along the fabric’s raw

edge with a zigzag stitch, the threads are grouped in place and

prevent them from coming undone.

An overcast stitch will also work, it loops the thread over the

edge of the fabric to prevent unravelling and works especially

well on thicker fabrics. It can be quite time-consuming though.

Overlocking is an easy way to neaten fabrics that

fray and keep it neat around curved areas and

adjoining seams.

Use pinking shears to cut your fabric

These serrated-edged scissors cut the fabric in a zigzag pattern

creating small, angled edges that prevent the fibres from

unravelling.

Finish with a French Seam

For a durable finish, French seams are the perfect way to encase

raw edges. This involves sewing the fabric with the wrong sides

together, trimming the seam allowance and sewing again with

the right sides together. This encloses the raw edges inside the

seam never to be seen again!

How to create a French seam that’s perfect for

encasing a frayed raw edge!

Pinking shears are best used on lighter-weight

fabrics like cotton.

Wrap raw edges with bias tape

This is ideal for more delicate areas like necklines or armholes,

where the tape acts as a protective layer, sealing the edges in

and preventing them from unravelling. It’s also commonly used

in jacket construction.

Fabric sealants

These can be applied to raw edges to prevent fraying, it coats

the fibres with a substance that prevents them from coming

loose (a little like glue)! Fray Check is one of the best ones.

Interfacing

Adding interfacing strips to a raw edge will add extra structure

and stability, especially on heavier fabrics. Fusible interfacing can

be pressed onto the fabric, reinforcing the edge and preventing

it from fraying.

Make a feature of the fraying

Some fabrics that fray such as denims and chambrays can look

pretty if left with a frayed edge. It is important to make sure the

fraying doesn’t go beyond where you want it to. This can be done

with a small zigzag stitch where you want the fraying to stop.

By dealing with fraying raw edges – your garments will

maintain their shape and integrity, even after lots of

wearing and washing!

Julie

Fray Check is perfect for fabrics that are difficult to

sew like tulle and organza!

and daughter team, and the first magazine to champion indie designers, www.thepatternpages.co.uk

MAKING DECORATIONS & HOMEWARE:

Easter decorations are another great sewing project

to tackle. Fabric Easter eggs, banners, or table

runners can brighten up your home with minimal

effort. Sewing fabric eggs, perhaps stuffed with

cotton or batting for a soft touch, is a great way

to recycle old fabric scraps. You can use colourful

patterns and even embroider designs like flowers,

crosses, or Easter-related motifs for added interest.

These sewn items can be placed around the house or

used as part of an Easter egg hunt . Why not get the

children involved and decorate eggs with ribbons and

scraps of fabric.

Additionally, homemade Easter gifts are a thoughtful

way to show love and care. Small fabric gift bags or

Easter-themed soft toys like bunnies can be sewn as

unique presents for children or adults alike. Go bigger

and make a mini quilt featuring spring motifs - these

make for heartfelt gifts that will stand out in a sea of

store-bought items.

The Bunny Bunch Quilt by Elizabeth Hartman shown

here is one of our most popular quilt designs and

would make a beautiful gift. It features Basil, Blanche,

Bertie, and Button are all dressed up in their favourite

clothes. Use your favourite fabrics to piece this

adorable bunch of bunnies. Everything is made using

conventional patchwork techniques. No templates or

paper piecing. The pattern contains one small quilt

38in x 48in and a larger quilt 73in x 75in.

Sewing at Easter combines

creativity, tradition, and

the joy of the season. Whether

you’re crafting clothes,

decorations, or gifts, sewing

is an opportunity to connect

with family and friends, make

lasting memories, and enjoy

the beauty of

handmade creations.
