Chiverton to

Threemilestone

Saints Trail is open!

Safe Cycling Truro to St Agnes

After several months of a temporary

arrangement the Saints Trail between

Chiverton bridge and Threemilestone

opened in full in February.

When coming from the Truro direction you cross

over the A390 using the signalised crossing next

to the DFS sofa store to get to the Park & Ride

side. From here you follow the path all the way

up to the new West Langarth roundabout. You

then use signalised crossings to go through the

middle of the roundabout to get to the south

side of the A390. You then follow the path all the

way to the Chiverton bridge. Please take care

where the path crosses junctions and property

entrances.

Pollinators emerge

words by Anna Cormie -

Assistant Countryside Ranger

As we move into spring, the number of

flowers and insects we see increases. While

the majority of pollinators come out later

in the year when it is warmer, a few species

begin to appear in March and April.

One such pollinator is the dark-edged bee-fly

(Bombylius major). The bee-fly is named for its mimicry

of bees. By looking like a bee, the female bee-fly is able

to fly close to solitary bee nests (most often those of

mining bees) and throw her eggs at the entrance. Once

the maggot has hatched, it will crawl into the nest and

eat the solitary bee larvae inside. While the bee-fly has a

parasitic beginning, it is a valuable early pollinator which

begins to appear in March and is best spotted in April.

It can be seen hovering above flowers while it uses its

long proboscis to collect nectar from flowers such as

violets and primroses.

One of the early flowers to appear, blackthorn trees

(Prunus spinosa) blossom with small white flowers in

March and April. This spiny shrubby tree is dark brown

in colour and can live for up to 100 years. The white

flowers, appearing before the leaves, are a valuable

source of pollen and nectar for bees in the springtime.

The trail from Chiverton bridge to St Agnes

village currently includes a mix of on road

and off road routes. Follow the signs! Maps of

the route are available on Cornwall Council’s

Saints Trails website.

We will be campaigning for an improved

connection with the existing shared paths

into Truro at Threemilestone and a fully

off road route between Chiverton and St

Agnes. Despite these issues the trail is a great

step forward for cycling and active travel in

the area. We look forward to it being a very

popular route for the people of Truro and St

Agnes alike.

Sarah Wetherill:

info@trurocyclingcampaign.com

Once the flowers have been pollinated, they turn into

small blue-black fruits which can be used to make sloe

gin but are also enjoyed by birds in Autumn. Not only is

blackthorn valuable for wildlife, but it was also thought to

have been used to make the wands and staffs of witches!

With spring, we also enter the bird breeding season.

The goldcrest (Regulus regulus) is at the height of its

nesting season in April. A very small bird at only 5 or 6g

(the weight of a 20p coin!), the goldcrest (along with the

firecrest) lays and creates the smallest eggs and nests

among British and Irish birds. They can, however, lay

up to 12 eggs in a clutch! Goldcrests can be identified

by their strikingly coloured crowns, orange in males

and yellow in females. This may be why its Latin name,

Regulus regulus, translates to Prince or Petty King and is

known as King of the Birds in European folklore.

So look out for bee-flies buzzing around flowers and

solitary bee nests, beautiful white flowers on spiky

blackthorn trees, and dynasties of goldcrests in

meadows, woodlands and gardens, and enjoy the

new life sprouting around you!

Intertidal Seagrass

Meadows

At Cornwall Wildlife Trust, we are

committed to restoring our local

intertidal seagrass meadows – and

we need your help to identify areas

that could be revived.

While strolling at low tide, have you noticed grass

growing on the shore and wondered what it is? This

is intertidal seagrass, a flowering plant much like the

grass in your garden, thriving in sheltered, muddy

areas. It plays a vital role in carbon storage and

provides habitat for a diverse range of species. Over

the past 50 years, we have lost 92% of our seagrass

beds nationally, with the most significant decline in

our estuarine intertidal meadows.

Recent research shows that muddy estuarine

seagrass beds store up to four times more carbon

than those found in deeper waters. With funding

from Seasalt Cornwall over the past three years, we

GARDENING

Spring Awakening:

Gardening tips for

March & April

As winter fades and the first signs of

spring appear, gardeners face an exciting

opportunity to renew their outdoor spaces.

March and April are critical months for

preparing your garden to thrive in the

warmer days ahead. With unpredictable

weather and a unique climate, a little

foresight goes a long way. Here are five

tips to help you create a vibrant, flourishing

garden this spring.

1. Prepare Your Soil:

Begin by assessing and

improving your garden’s

soil. Winter’s frosts and

fluctuating temperatures

can leave your soil

compacted and less

fertile. Remove any

debris and gently

turn the soil to aerate

it. Adding a layer of

well-rotted compost or

manure will enrich the

nutrient content and

improve drainage. This groundwork sets the stage

for healthy root development once you plant your

spring and summer selections.

2. Start Sowing Seeds:

March is ideal for

starting seeds indoors

for a head start on

summer vegetables

and annual blooms. Use

seed trays or pots with a

quality potting mix, and

cover them lightly to

protect tender seedlings

from any lingering frosts.

For cool-weather crops

like lettuce, spinach, and

peas, direct sowing

in April - once the risk of frost subsides - can be

very effective. Early planning ensures you have

a variety of plants ready to grow as the season

warms.

3. Prune and Clean:

Now is also the time to prune winter-dormant

trees and shrubs. Removing dead or damaged

branches encourages healthier growth and

prevents diseases. Additionally, clearing fallen

leaves and debris from your garden helps reduce

the risk of pests emerging and gives your garden

a tidy, refreshed look.

4. Plant Hardy Varieties:

Take advantage of the mild weather by planting

hardy perennials and spring bulbs such as

crocuses, daffodils, and tulips. These resilient

species can withstand a bit of chill and will

bring a burst of colour as they bloom later in the

season.

5. Support Biodiversity:

Finally, create a wildlife-friendly environment by

incorporating features like a birdbath or insect

hotel. Leaving some areas of your garden a bit

wild can encourage beneficial insects and native

birds to visit, enhancing the natural balance and

beauty of your outdoor space.

Embrace these gardening tips for March and

April, and you’ll be well on your way to a thriving,

sustainable garden all season long. With careful

planning and extra care this spring, every garden

can truly bloom with vibrant life, colour, and

promise.

COMMUNITY NEWS

May Ryan’s soul

rest in peace

The homeless community is in mourning

following the deeply saddening news of

the passing of Ryan, a well-known client

of the Truro Homeless Action Group’s

breakfast service. His untimely death has

left volunteers, friends, and the wider

community reflecting on his struggles

with drugs, addictions, inner torments,

and the urgent need to do more for

those experiencing homelessness.

Ryan was a familiar face to many at the

breakfast club and those around Truro

City, a man who maintained a sense of

politeness and respect for those around

him. Despite the hardships he endured, he

remained friendly and appreciative, forming

bonds with volunteers who got to know his

routines, moods, and preferences.

One particularly cold and damp Sunday

morning in February this year, Ryan was

found slumped in the Lemon Quay

underpass, having missed the 7:30am

breakfast service. Recognising his

vulnerability, a volunteer took him to Caffè

Nero for a hot meal. He was conscious he

didn’t want to take advantage over their

generosity and opted for the cheaper

breakfast option. Ryan candidly shared a

heartbreaking truth. “I’m on cocaine, you

know,” he admitted. When asked how

he could afford it, he revealed that a

so-called friend supplied it to him,

expecting repayment. “I owe him so

much money,” Ryan confessed, his head

dropping in a moment of painful realisation.

It was evident that Ryan had an

appreciation for good food and small

comforts. He often opted for vegetarian

breakfasts, avocado and poached egg or

mushrooms on toast, and made thoughtful

choices - even preferring brown sugar over

white. These little habits spoke volumes

about his upbringing and the person he was

beneath the immense weight of hardship.

His passing has left a sadness in the

hearts of the Truro Homeless Action Group

volunteers who knew him well. He was a

man who, despite his suffering, deserved

society to have helped him more. “Ryan

will be missed by the volunteers at Truro

Homeless Action Group, and I will definitely

miss him,” one volunteer shared.

His story serves as a stark reminder of the

struggles faced by those living on the

streets, in deep poverty and on drugs or

alcohol addiction.

As a community, we must do more to

prevent vulnerable souls from falling

through the cracks. We owe it to ourselves,

and to each other, to recognise that

suffering is universal and that every

individual - regardless of their circumstances

- is our equal.

May Ryan’s soul find peace, and may his

memory inspire a deeper commitment to

compassion, support, and change.

Local Food for

Planetary Health

The time to transform our food systems is

now. How we produce, process, distribute,

and consume food is one of the leading

drivers of biodiversity loss and climate

change both globally and here in the UK.

Beyond its environmental toll, the current food

system significantly impacts human health,

contributing to conditions like type 2 diabetes,

heart disease, and common cancers.

But there’s hope—and it starts locally. In Truro, three

inspiring projects are joining forces to help raise

awareness about how to create a healthier, more

sustainable future for both people and the planet.

• Truro Nourish connects people through events

that celebrate local food, promote healthier eating

habits, and foster mental well-being.

These initiatives are leading by example, showing

how small, community-driven actions can spark big

change. Next year, they plan to collaborate further,

with Truro Garden Share and Wildly Edible Truro

providing fresh produce for Truro Nourish events -

celebrating local food and its power to heal.

• Truro Garden Share brings communities together

by encouraging residents to share unused garden

space with volunteers who grow fresh, sustainable

produce.

• Wildly Edible Truro transforms public spaces into

flourishing hubs for food production, proving that

healthy, local food can be accessible to everyone.

Want to be part of this growing movement?

Get involved! Visit gardenshare.org.uk

or truronourishhub.co.uk, or email

hello@gardenshare.org.uk to learn more.

Together, we can sow the seeds for a healthier

future.

Pawsome new

Kangaroo paws

The Eden Project in Cornwall has

unveiled five new Kangaroo paw

(Anigozanthos) cultivars - the first of

their kind to be publicly displayed in

the UK. These additions to the Western

Australia exhibit in the Mediterranean

Biome further enhance an already

impressive collection of over twenty

varieties.

Among the new introductions are two

standout varieties: Masquerade and

Carnivale. Masquerade dazzles with

iridescent teal-blue flowers - a rare

and highly prized color in horticulture -

while Carnivale features a striking blend of

purple and pink blooms. The collection is

rounded out by Aussie Spirit, which offers

an unusual green-yellow hue, the vibrant

crimson-pink Bush Crystal, and the bright

yellow Bush Zest.

Grown in the Eden Project’s state-of-the-art

Growing Point nursery, these plants arrived

from Australia as micro-propagules - tiny

fragments of plant tissue cultured in a lab.

They were originally bred at the Western

Australian Botanic Garden at Kings Park in

Perth, where extensive breeding work has

been underway since 2007. The Eden

Project’s eight-year collaboration with

Kings Park has ensured that the exhibit

authentically represents the diverse flora

of Western Australia, highlighting plants’

adaptations to harsh environments and their

cultural significance to indigenous peoples.

Kangaroo paws are not only visually striking;

they also play an important ecological role

by producing abundant nectar to attract

various pollinators, including insects and

birds. In addition to enjoying the display,

visitors can purchase all five new cultivars

from the Eden Project shop, with sales

supporting ongoing conservation efforts

at Kings Park and the Eden Project’s

environmental initiatives.

To advertise please call 07786 735 711 or email marketing@trurotogether.co.uk

Head of Horticulture Catherine Cutler

remarked, “These amazing plants deliver

incredible colours and help us tell the

story of Western Australia’s biodiversity.”
