Hello and welcome

Welcome spring: a season of awakening.

As nature reawakens from winter’s slumber,

we too are invited to reconnect with our inner

selves. Amid life’s challenges - whether setbacks,

frustrating encounters, or physical discomfort -

pause and listen to what your body and spirit are

telling you. Find a quiet space or take a mindful

walk among blossoming trees, letting stillness

nurture your soul.

Life isn’t solely about the daily grind; it’s about

cultivating genuine connections and personal

growth. Engage with your community, embrace

your best self, and extend kindness wherever

possible. Let this season remind you that even

in moments of struggle, there is beauty and

opportunity for transformation. Embrace

the magic within.

Take time to appreciate the earth’s gentle

reminders. Each still moment offers a chance

to grow stronger, more compassionate, and

truly present. Wishing you a season of renewal,

connection, and inner flourishing.

With love,

Therese

GARDENING

Spring Awakening:

Gardening tips for

March & April

As winter fades and the first signs of

spring appear, gardeners face an exciting

opportunity to renew their outdoor spaces.

March and April are critical months for

preparing your garden to thrive in the

warmer days ahead. With unpredictable

weather and a unique climate, a little

foresight goes a long way. Here are five

tips to help you create a vibrant, flourishing

garden this spring.

1. Prepare Your Soil:

Begin by assessing and

improving your garden’s

soil. Winter’s frosts and

fluctuating temperatures

can leave your soil

compacted and less

fertile. Remove any

debris and gently

turn the soil to aerate

it. Adding a layer of

well-rotted compost or

manure will enrich the

nutrient content and

improve drainage. This groundwork sets the stage

for healthy root development once you plant your

spring and summer selections.

2. Start Sowing Seeds:

March is ideal for

starting seeds indoors

for a head start on

summer vegetables

and annual blooms. Use

seed trays or pots with a

quality potting mix, and

cover them lightly to

protect tender seedlings

from any lingering frosts.

For cool-weather crops

like lettuce, spinach, and

peas, direct sowing

in April - once the risk of frost subsides - can be

very effective. Early planning ensures you have

a variety of plants ready to grow as the season

warms.

3. Prune and Clean:

Now is also the time to prune winter-dormant

trees and shrubs. Removing dead or damaged

branches encourages healthier growth and

prevents diseases. Additionally, clearing fallen

leaves and debris from your garden helps reduce

the risk of pests emerging and gives your garden

a tidy, refreshed look.

4. Plant Hardy Varieties:

Take advantage of the mild weather by planting

hardy perennials and spring bulbs such as

crocuses, daffodils, and tulips. These resilient

species can withstand a bit of chill and will

bring a burst of colour as they bloom later in the

season.

5. Support Biodiversity:

Finally, create a wildlife-friendly environment by

incorporating features like a birdbath or insect

hotel. Leaving some areas of your garden a bit

wild can encourage beneficial insects and native

birds to visit, enhancing the natural balance and

beauty of your outdoor space.

Embrace these gardening tips for March and

April, and you’ll be well on your way to a thriving,

sustainable garden all season long. With careful

planning and extra care this spring, every garden

can truly bloom with vibrant life, colour, and

promise.

COMMUNITY NEWS

Making a

difference in their

community

An Age Concern GX Plus drop-in Information

Centre in Chalfont St Peter is making a positive

difference to the lives of the seniors in their

community. The office opened up in June of

2023, to be of assistance to elderly people who

are feeling increasing cut off from essential

services as the world becomes more and more

digitalised, and councils cut longstanding social

services.

“Open a little over a year, more than 4 000 residents

have benefitted from the initiative of this small,

independent charity. Our elderly are struggling without

face-to -face access to NHS services and their high

street banks. They can no longer simply call their utility

providers as everything has become digitalised, and

even applying for a Blue Badge is strictly an on-line

application. They are being penalised and left behind

in a fast- moving world, and we were determined to

try and help,” says parish councillor and Age Concern

trustee Karen Dickson.

The centre’s staff have been assisting with Pension

Credit enquiries and Attendance Allowances, and are

currently training up volunteers to ensure capacity

going forward. The charity also run very successful

chiropody and ear clinics, as well as social singing

group for those living with memory loss, lunch clubs

and coffee mornings, games and jigsaws days, knit

and natter groups and a weekly drawing Group.

Monthly Tuesday Talks are very well attended with

recent talk on Frank Sinatra and the Mafia, and the

Brink’s-Mat robbery being particularly popular.

“While our charity is localised, and only able to cater

to residents of Chalfont St Peter, Chalfont St Giles and

Gerrards Cross, the need we are seeing is real and

must be the same in other villages. Going forward,

if any other villages want to try and set up something

similar, please reach out to our lovely staff Anita and

Beth, and we will try to help where we can”.

The charity can be reached on 01753 917241. They

are completely dependent on charitable donations,

and more details can be found on their website is

COMMUNITY NEWS

GXFR postponed

to May 2026

The GX Fun Run Committee has announced

that the bi-annual GX Fun Run event will be

postponed until Sunday 17th May 2026.

The decision follows the resignation of key

committee members and the recognition of

the need for professional event services to

manage an event of this size.

The Fun Run, which attracts 1,500 runners and

has supported local charities like; The Epilepsy

Society, Williams Fund and Hearing Dogs for

the Deaf has historically relied on dedicated

volunteers. However, with increasing logistical

demands, the committee decided that hiring a

specialist events company to handle the run side

of the day’s proceedings is essential to ensure

the event’s success.

Therese Cooklin commented, “We are

immensely grateful to our Gold sponsors

who committed to the 2025 event such as

longstanding businesses; BP Collins LLP and

Nunn Hayward, as well as new supporters like

Avery Healthcare, Savills, GX Physio, Gerrards

Cross Golf Club, Gayhurst School, Frost

Partnership, Kidd Rapinet LLP, David Moore

Photography, Doctor Now, KJ Smith Solicitors.

We hope that their support will transfer to the

new date in May 2026 in order to plan for the

event.

The committee also welcomes new treasurer

Mario Amato, who brings extensive experience

to the committee.

Therese added, “This extra time allows us to

plan an event that not only promotes health

and well-being but also embodies the spirit of

community support and togetherness.”

or volunteering opportunities,

COMMUNITY NEWS

Life as a Town Councillor

Cllr Jaspal Chhokar

I moved with my family to Gerrards Cross in 2001. We have loved

living here, and I always wanted to give back to the community.

Around 2010, a friend suggested I consider

joining the parish council. My first exposure was

at the annual meeting in 2011, during which

there was a heated debate about a proposed

BMX track on the common.

Although the discussion was intense, it did

not deter me from putting my name forward

to be a councillor in May 2011. I owe a great

debt of gratitude to councillors such as Jennifer

Woolveridge, Ian Gordon, and Chris Brown, who

guided me during those early days when I knew

little about council workings and responsibilities.

Now on my third term, it is hard to believe I have

served for nearly 14 years. Gerrards Cross has

evolved significantly since I first joined, including

the transition from a parish council to a town

council and the introduction of a Mayor in place

of a Chair. Despite these changes, the town has

retained its unique community feel, as seen in our

summer and

Christmas events.

Throughout my Cllr Jaspal Chhokar

tenure, serving as

chair of the planning committee has allowed

me to learn about all aspects of Gerrards Cross.

I have met many residents and provided a voice

during planning discussions. One major battle

occurred during the 2016 local plan proposal,

which threatened to remove green belt land

fortunately, this did not happen.

I also enjoy monthly inspections of the East

Common play area, visiting with my two daughters

and gathering feedback from other parents. Since

July 2023, I have served as a Buckinghamshire

Councillor, which has strengthened our town council

efforts. Running my own business locally keeps

me accessible to residents, and I look forward to

continuing my service.

The Health Benefits

of Pets: A Doctor’s

Perspective

As a GP, I often emphasize the importance

of holistic health, which includes mental and

emotional well-being.

One of the most effective ways to enhance our health

is through the companionship of pets. Numerous

studies have shown that having pets can significantly

improve our physical and psychological health.

Firstly, pets encourage physical activity. Dog owners,

for instance, are more likely to engage in regular

walking, which can reduce the risk of obesity and

related conditions such as heart disease. A study

published in the *Journal of Physical Activity and

Health* found that pet owners are 54% more likely

to meet daily exercise recommendations.

Moreover, pets have a profound impact on mental

health. Interacting with animals can increase

serotonin and dopamine levels, promoting feelings

of happiness and reducing stress. Research in

Closing the Gap:

New Integrated

Support

Citizens Advice Buckinghamshire and

Buckinghamshire Mind are excited to announce

a pioneering collaboration funded by a

generous National Lottery Community Fund

award.

The project, titled “Closing the Gap,” is designed

to provide comprehensive support for individuals

facing financial difficulties alongside mental health

challenges. By merging their longstanding local

expertise in financial advice and mental wellbeing, the

two charities are united in ensuring that vulnerable

residents do not fall through the cracks.

This innovative initiative will offer wrap-around support

tailored to individual needs, addressing the high

dropout rates observed among clients citing mental

health issues. Data indicates that those with mental

health concerns are 57% more likely to disengage

*Frontiers in Psychology* highlights that pet

ownership is linked to lower levels of depression and

anxiety. The simple act of petting a dog or cat can

trigger the release of oxytocin, fostering a bond that

enhances emotional well-being. Pets provide social

support too, reducing feelings of loneliness.

In conclusion, as a doctor I advocate for the

inclusion of pets in our lives. Their ability to

improve physical activity, mental health and social

connections makes them invaluable companions for

a healthier life.

from services compared to others. Scheduled to

launch in late Spring 2025, the project aims to create

lasting change and a brighter future for those affected.

Craig Glynn, CEO of Citizens Advice Bucks, explained,

“This funding enables us to bring to life an idea we

have nurtured since 2022—a project that will truly

close the gap between financial hardship and mental

ill-health support.” Stephen Robinson, Director of

Services for Bucks Mind, added, “Embedding

Supported Self-Help Practitioners within Citizens

Advice offices will further strengthen our partnership

and extend vital debt solutions.”

A window to

your health: The

importance of

early eye testing

Your personal health is important. Today,

we focus on the early detection of health

issues rather than treating conditions after

they have advanced - a strategy that is

especially crucial in eyecare.

Eye tests are more than just vision checks.

Because the eyes contain some of the smallest

structures and blood vessels in the body, they

are often reliable indicators of your overall health.

With additional tests, such as OCT (during which

you only experience a brief flash of light), we can

detect and monitor potential issues up to five

years earlier than with a standard eye test. This

technology allows us to examine in detail the

layers of the light-sensitive retina and the blood

vessels that are not visible by other means. Eye

tests can also help detect high blood pressure,

elevated cholesterol, diabetes, glaucoma, and

cardiovascular disease.

Regular eye tests ensure that you are taking

the best possible care of your eyes and help

you maximise your vision. If you require vision

correction, there are many glasses and contact

lenses designed specifically for your needs. From

specialist driving lenses with contrast-enhancing

filters to Relax lenses that make viewing digital

devices gentler on your eyes, your optician can

advise you on the best solution. For anything

eye-related, ask your optician.

Safe & gentle ear wax

removal at a clinic

near you

Microsuctioning

At Hearwego Clinic we provide instant and effective ear wax removal treatment. Microsuction is the gold

standard method of ear wax removal.

Unlike traditional ear syringing or irrigation, which uses water, microsuction uses gentle suction to remove

ear wax. This is a safe, gentle and effective method of ear wax removal and, in the majority of cases, provides

instant relief and immediately restores full hearing. Our Audiologists are trained in all methods of ear wax

removal, microsuction, ear irrigation (commonly known as ear syringing) and instrumentation.

What to expect at your appointment

At Hearwego our practitioners will use a microscope to see a detailed view of your ear canal and examine

the potential build-up of ear wax. Ear wax and debris are removed using a gentle device. Our appointments

include an examination of your ears and removal of ear wax using microsuction, which typically lasts between

10-30 minutes. Depending on the consistency of the wax, we may need to revert to ear irrigation (commonly

known as ear syringing) or instrumentation. In rare cases, a follow-up visit may be required to remove

particularly stubborn ear wax.

Are you experiencing any of the following?

• Pressure in the ears

• Blocked feeling in the ears

• Need to pop your ears but can’t

• Sudden loss of hearing or muffles sound

• Hearing aids whistling

• Underperforming hearing aids
