Hello and Welcome!

Welcome spring: a season of awakening.

As nature reawakens from winter’s slumber,

we too are invited to reconnect with our

inner selves. Amid life’s challenges - whether

setbacks, frustrating encounters, or physical

discomfort - pause and listen to what your

body and spirit are telling you. Find a

quiet space or take a mindful walk among

blossoming trees, letting stillness nurture

your soul.

Life isn’t solely about the daily grind; it’s

about cultivating genuine connections

and personal growth. Engage with your

community, embrace your best self, and

extend kindness wherever possible. Let

this season remind you that even in

moments of struggle, there is beauty and

opportunity for transformation. Embrace

the magic within.

Take time to appreciate the earth’s gentle

reminders. Each still moment offers a chance

to grow stronger, more compassionate,

and truly present. Wishing you a season of

renewal, connection, and inner flourishing.

EYE NEWS

A window to

your health: The

importance of

early eye testing

Your personal health is important. Today,

we focus on the early detection of health

issues rather than treating conditions after

they have advanced - a strategy that is

especially crucial in eyecare.

Eye tests are more than just vision checks.

Because the eyes contain some of the smallest

structures and blood vessels in the body, they are

often reliable indicators of your overall health.

With additional tests, such as OCT (during which

you only experience a brief flash of light), we can

detect and monitor potential issues up to five

years earlier than with a standard eye test. This

technology allows us to examine in detail the

layers of the light-sensitive retina and the blood

vessels that are not visible by other means. Eye

tests can also help detect high blood pressure,

elevated cholesterol, diabetes, glaucoma, and

cardiovascular disease.

Regular eye tests ensure that you are taking

the best possible care of your eyes and help

you maximise your vision. If you require vision

correction, there are many glasses and contact

lenses designed specifically for your needs. From

specialist driving lenses with contrast-enhancing

filters to Relax lenses that make viewing digital

devices gentler on your eyes, your optician can

advise you on the best solution. For anything

eye-related, ask your optician.

The importance of

extra - curricular

activities: shaping

well-rounded children

Extra-curricular activities are key to children’s

personal growth, helping develop wellrounded

personalities and essential life skills.

In Gerrards Cross, families benefit from a wealth

of clubs and societies for children of all ages.

From dance, drama and sports to coding and

volunteering, there are endless opportunities

to explore. The summer term offers the perfect

chance to try something new - an exciting step

Participation in these activities enhances physical

and mental wellbeing, building confidence,

teamwork, and leadership skills. Children develop

time management, resilience, and perseverance -

traits that lay the foundation for future success.

Both state and independent schools provide

valuable extra-curricular opportunities. State

schools often partner with local organisations to

offer enrichment beyond the classroom, while

many independent schools boast extensive

in-house programmes with clubs ranging from

debating and chess to environmental initiatives

and adventurous residential trips. Together, these

options create a rich landscape of possibility,

ensuring all children have access to life - enhancing

opportunities that complement their academic

journey.

To explore the variety of local opportunities,

the whole community is invited to a Sports

Expo at Maltmans Green on Monday 28th April,

5.30-7pm, where more than 20 sports clubs

and activities for children will be showcased.

Extra-curricular involvement isn’t just an add-on

- it’s a vital part of shaping a brighter future for

every child.

GARDENING

Spring Awakening:

Gardening tips for

March & April

As winter fades and the first signs of

spring appear, gardeners face an exciting

opportunity to renew their outdoor spaces.

March and April are critical months for

preparing your garden to thrive in the

warmer days ahead. With unpredictable

weather and a unique climate, a little

foresight goes a long way. Here are five

tips to help you create a vibrant, flourishing

garden this spring.

1. Prepare Your Soil:

Begin by assessing and

improving your garden’s

soil. Winter’s frosts and

fluctuating temperatures

can leave your soil

compacted and less

fertile. Remove any

debris and gently

turn the soil to aerate

it. Adding a layer of

well-rotted compost or

manure will enrich the

nutrient content and

improve drainage. This groundwork sets the stage

for healthy root development once you plant your

spring and summer selections.

2. Start Sowing Seeds:

March is ideal for

starting seeds indoors

for a head start on

summer vegetables

and annual blooms. Use

seed trays or pots with a

quality potting mix, and

cover them lightly to

protect tender seedlings

from any lingering frosts.

For cool-weather crops

like lettuce, spinach, and

peas, direct sowing

in April - once the risk of frost subsides - can be

very effective. Early planning ensures you have

a variety of plants ready to grow as the season

warms.

3. Prune and Clean:

Now is also the time to prune winter-dormant

trees and shrubs. Removing dead or damaged

branches encourages healthier growth and

prevents diseases. Additionally, clearing fallen

leaves and debris from your garden helps reduce

the risk of pests emerging and gives your garden

a tidy, refreshed look.

4. Plant Hardy Varieties:

Take advantage of the mild weather by planting

hardy perennials and spring bulbs such as

crocuses, daffodils, and tulips. These resilient

species can withstand a bit of chill and will

bring a burst of colour as they bloom later in the

season.

5. Support Biodiversity:

Finally, create a wildlife-friendly environment by

incorporating features like a birdbath or insect

hotel. Leaving some areas of your garden a bit

wild can encourage beneficial insects and native

birds to visit, enhancing the natural balance and

beauty of your outdoor space.

Embrace these gardening tips for March and

April, and you’ll be well on your way to a thriving,

sustainable garden all season long. With careful

planning and extra care this spring, every garden

can truly bloom with vibrant life, colour, and

promise.

FINANCIAL NEWS

Pension Funds –

Long Term Reset?

Was it a big surprise when the Chancellor

recently announced that pension funds will form

part of our estates for Inheritance Tax purposes

from 2027?

I guess the answer is, not really.

This has been muted for quite some time and

although the change is quite hard for some to

swallow, there is some logic behind the argument

that pension funds should exist to deliver income

in retirement, rather than being morphed into an

inheritance tax saving scheme for the wealthy.

From a financial adviser’s perspective, we have had

to deal with many legislative changes over the years,

some good, some not so good, but it’s fascinating

how quickly the changes seem to get accepted

and we move on to find new ways to deal with our

financial affairs as tax efficiently as possible.

In fact, over the next few years, before the new

regulation becomes effective, if our advice to

clients is - try to spend as much of your pension as

possible, that might not be the most disappointing

advice they’ve had from their adviser! Of course,

‘spending’ might include ‘giving away’ and again,

this might open up a range of new opportunities to

mitigate against inheritance tax, whilst potentially

observing their loved ones enjoying some of the

family wealth.

Although the final clarification of the rules is

not expected until Q3 in 2025, we are already

building some interesting solutions for clients to

consider, and the conclusions might not be so

bad after all.

GXFR

postponed

to May 2026

The GX Fun Run Committee has

announced that the bi-annual GX Fun

Run event will be postponed until

Sunday 17th May 2026. The decision

follows the resignation of key

committee members and the

recognition of the need for professional

event services to manage an event of

this size.

The Fun Run, which attracts 1,500 runners

and has supported local charities like;

The Epilepsy Society, Williams Fund and

Hearing Dogs for the Deaf has historically

relied on dedicated volunteers. However,

with increasing logistical demands, the

committee decided that hiring a specialist

events company to handle the run side

of the day’s proceedings is essential to

ensure the event’s success.

Therese Cooklin commented, “We are

immensely grateful to our longstanding

Gold sponsors such as BP Collins LLP

and Nunn Hayward, as well as new

supporters like Avery Healthcare, Savills,

GX Physio, and Gerrards Cross Golf Club,

whose contributions will help us secure

the professional services needed to make

the 2026 event extraordinary. Additional

support from Gayhurst School, Frost

Partnership, Kidd Rapinet LLP, David

Moore Photography, Doctor Now, KJ

Smith Solicitors has been integral in

planning for the future.”

The committee also welcomes new

treasurer Mario Amato, who brings

extensive experience to the committee.

Therese added, “This extra time allows us

to plan an event that not only promotes

health and well-being but also

embodies the spirit of community

support and togetherness.”

Safe & gentle ear wax

removal at a clinic

near you

Microsuctioning

At Hearwego Clinic we provide instant and effective ear wax removal treatment. Microsuction is the gold

standard method of ear wax removal.

Unlike traditional ear syringing or irrigation, which uses water, microsuction uses gentle suction to remove

ear wax. This is a safe, gentle and effective method of ear wax removal and, in the majority of cases, provides

instant relief and immediately restores full hearing. Our Audiologists are trained in all methods of ear wax

removal, microsuction, ear irrigation (commonly known as ear syringing) and instrumentation.

What to expect at your appointment

At Hearwego our practitioners will use a microscope to see a detailed view of your ear canal and examine

the potential build-up of ear wax. Ear wax and debris are removed using a gentle device. Our appointments

include an examination of your ears and removal of ear wax using microsuction, which typically lasts between

10-30 minutes. Depending on the consistency of the wax, we may need to revert to ear irrigation (commonly

known as ear syringing) or instrumentation. In rare cases, a follow-up visit may be required to remove

particularly stubborn ear wax.

Are you experiencing any of the following?

• Pressure in the ears

• Blocked feeling in the ears

• Need to pop your ears but can’t

• Sudden loss of hearing or muffles sound

• Hearing aids whistling

• Underperforming hearing aids
