WOMEN INSPIRING CHANGE
New Orleans Women Who Made History
New Orleans, a city known for its vibrant culture
and rich history, has also been home to many
remarkable women who defied expectations
and left an indelible mark on the world. From activists
and artists to entrepreneurs and educators, these
trailblazers have shaped the city’s landscape and
inspired generations to come. Here are just a few
of the phenomenal women who have called New
Orleans home:
Marie Laveau (1801-1881):
Perhaps the most famous woman in New Orleans’
history, Marie Laveau was a Creole voodoo
practitioner who became a powerful and influential
figure in the 19th century. Known for her spiritual
leadership and community activism, she helped
those in need, especially the poor and enslaved.
Her legacy continues to captivate and intrigue to
this day.
Kate Chopin (1850-1904):
A groundbreaking author, Kate Chopin challenged
social norms with her honest and realistic portrayals
of women’s lives in the late 19th century. She was
born in St. Louis and moved to New Orleans after
marriage. Her novel The Awakening was considered
controversial at the time for its exploration of female
sexuality and independence, but it has since
become a celebrated work of American literature.
Mahalia Jackson (1911-1972):
The “Queen of Gospel,” Mahalia Jackson was a
powerhouse vocalist whose music transcended
genres and touched the hearts of millions. Born in
New Orleans, she began singing in church choirs
as a child and went on to become an international
sensation, using her voice to spread messages of
hope and faith.
Leah Chase (1923-2019):
Chef Leah Chase was a culinary icon and a driving
force behind the Civil Rights Movement in New
Orleans. As the owner of Dooky Chase’s Restaurant,
she welcomed people of all backgrounds and used
her kitchen as a space for dialogue and activism.
Her delicious Creole cuisine and unwavering
commitment to justice made her a beloved figure
in the city. She was the inspiration for Tiana the
Princess, the Disney character from the movie the
Princess and the Frog. A ride in Walt Disney World
was inspired by the movie and her legacy was
honored during the ride’s inauguration.
These are just a few of the many remarkable
women who have contributed to New Orleans’
rich history. Their stories serve as a testament to
the power of resilience, determination, and the
unwavering pursuit of one’s passions.

New Chief Curator:
The New Orleans Museum of Art has
appointed Anne Collins Smith as its new
Chief Curator. Smith will lead collection and
exhibition initiatives, focusing on modern and
contemporary art. Previously, she was director
of the Xavier University of Louisiana Art Gallery.
Lisa Rotondo-McCord, formerly Deputy Director
of Curatorial Affairs, has taken on the new
position of Deputy Director at NOMA, and will
continue to serve as Curator of Asian Art.
Exhibition Partnership: “New African
Masquerades: Artistic Innovations and
Collaborations” is organized in partnership
with the Musée des Civilisations noires. The
exhibition is supported by grants from the
National Endowment for the Humanities and the
National Endowment for the Arts and will have
parallel tours in North American and African
venues.
Featured Artists: The exhibition will feature the
works of Chief Ekpenyong Bassey Nsa, Sheku
“Goldenfinger” Fofanah, David Sanou, and
Hervé Youmbi. The 13 head-to-toe masquerade
ensembles were created for social, spiritual,
entertainment, and museum contexts.

LIX PIANO
Visitors can experience part of Super Bowl LIX
history and enjoy music played on the custom
Yamaha piano designed by artist and bestselling
author Suleika Jaouad for acclaimed musician

What inspired you to study
medicine?
Improving people’s lives on an
individual’s basis. I wanted to be
a diplomat, but I realized being
a doctor would also allow me to
take care of people.
What are you most passionate
about in your profession?
Language is very important
in the relationship between a
doctor and a patient. When I’m
sick, I prefer to speak in my
native language, so I’m very
happy I can care for people in
their language.
Why did you choose Family
Medicine?
In family medicine we are
trained to take care of men,
women and children. We get
to improve people’s health not
only by treating some issues,
but helping with prevention.
I also like different things, so
with family medicine, I get
to treat multiple conditions
by partnering up with other
doctors.
Is there any condition that
predominates in the patients
you see?
Unfortunately, I see many
recurring conditions, especially
in my Hispanic patients such as
high blood pressure, diabetes,
high cholesterol, and obesity.
What do you recommend to
people to take care of their
health?
At least 120 minutes of physical
activity per week along with
a more plant-based diet high
in fruits and vegetables. I tell

work?
I’m a proud mother of two
sons. I’m an active leader in
the SGI-USA, a lay Buddhist
organization. I’m passionate
about helping people awaken
to the majesty of their lives.
What do you like about living
in Louisiana?
People here are so passionate!
We have excellent food (not
alway good for your health),
music and dance scenes. We
live in one of the best places
ever!

medicina?

El idioma es muy importante

y un paciente. Cuando estoy

idioma nativo, así que estoy muy
contenta de poder atender a la

Familiar?
En la medicina familiar estamos
capacitados para cuidar de
hombres, mujeres y niños.
Podemos mejorar la salud de

algunos problemas, sino

prevención. También me gustan
las cosas diferentes, así que con
la medicina familiar, puedo tratar
múltiples condiciones junto a

The Women Protecting Louisiana’s Workforce
Over 35 years ago,
LCI Workers’
Comp began
building its commitment to
the Louisiana workforce.
And it began by building a
company where employees
are committed to their
jobs and have a chance to
become leaders within the
organization. Today, LCI is
led by a knowledgeable
and experienced group
of women–some with 20
years of leadership in their
areas of expertise–such as
underwriting, claims, and
payroll verification.
As LCI’s team continues
to grow, they are focused

on helping more businesses
succeed, and they are
extending their services to
the Hispanic community
with the launch of their
new program, Caminos.
Their team has grown to
include bilingual personnel
who are excited to work
directly with local Hispanic
entrepreneurs. The women
who run these departments
understand the hardships
Hispanic business owners
face on the road to success,
and they are ready to
provide coaching and
guidance anytime they are
called upon.

Underwriter. Eugenie has over
20 years of experience, is a
licensed Property & Casualty
Agent, and has her Certified
Workers Compensation

Eugenie lives on the
Northshore with her husband
and two children. In her
spare time, she enjoys family
vacations to the beach.

Melissa Verdin
Melissa graduated from Southeastern
Louisiana University with a
Bachelor’s degree in Organizational
Communications. Melissa is currently
the Finance Supervisor. She joined the
LCI team in July 2010 and works as the
Finance Supervisor She resides in New
Orleans with her boyfriend, Daniel, and
their cute (but bad) cat, Ivy. In her free
time, Melissa enjoys traveling to new
countries and spending time with her
friends and family, especially her nieces
and nephews.

She was born and raised in Uptown,
New Orleans. She says, “The best thing
about growing up in the Uptown area
was being surrounded by all of my family.
I also developed relationships with other
children in the area, some of whom
I am still friends with to this day. On
Saturdays, I enjoy serving those in need
by volunteering at the Mission in New
Orleans.”

Emmy O’Dwyer’s story is one of
passion, dedication, and a deepseated
commitment to community.
Born to Honduran immigrants in Jefferson
Parish, Louisiana, Emmy’s connection to
her heritage has been a driving force in
her life and work. Today, she’s a nationally
recognized education leader, using her
platform to elevate the unique needs of
the Latino community in early childhood
education.
Emmy’s journey began with a personal
need: As a mother of two young children,
she sought quality childcare after Hurricane
Katrina. This led her to open the first new
early learning center in the area, Abeona
House. Starting in a small shotgun house
on Oak Street, the center served 30
children. Over 19 years, Abeona House
grew, expanding its facility and improving
program quality and teacher compensation.
This experience ignited Emmy’s passion for
early childhood education and her drive to
create positive change.
In 2021, Emmy founded Advancing
Communities for Equity, a company
focused on strengthening systems that
benefit children and families. Her work
extends across Jefferson and Orleans
parishes, the state of Louisiana, and
nationally. She advocates for programs
for multilingual infants, toddlers, and
preschoolers, and works with partners such
as Jefferson Ready Start Network (JRSN),
and with Beloved Community and Agenda
for Children in Orleans Parish to ensure
children have access to culturally and
linguistically responsive options.
Emmy’s message to young Latinas
entering the field is powerful: “I find that the
cultural assets you have learned from the
community are superpowers. The love and
care for people, compassion, and curiosity
can help you learn as much as possible
about your field and be a resource
that others come to for guidance.” She
emphasizes the importance of recognizing
the power and love within one’s own family,
church, and school, using those skills to
give back to others.
A key focus of Emmy’s work is
educating the Latino community about
the importance of early childhood
development. She shares the statistic that
85% of brain development occurs in the
first three years of life and stresses the
need for rich learning experiences and
early identification of learning issues. She
also encourages families to preserve their
language and heritage, recognizing the gift
it is to children.
Emmy O’Dwyer’s impact is undeniable.
She has helped hundreds of dual language
learners enroll in high-quality early
care and education classrooms led by
bilingual educators. She also championed
a program to recruit, employ, and train
bilingual Latino women as early care
and education teachers, creating a twogenerational
program that benefits women,
children, and the community as a whole.
In her spare time Emmy decorates
shoes with lots of glitter for the Muses
parade and enjoys dancing in Iris with The
Ladies of Leisure. Carnival and all the joy
that surrounds it provides her inspiration
and community year-round.

Luz faced challenges as a woman
and a minority in her field. However,
she refused to be limited, focusing on
strong teams and core values. This led
to significant growth, a new warehouse
and an acquisition. “I took the For Sale
sign, scratched off for sale, and just
wrote New Synergy Warehouse and
pasted it up on my desk,” Luz recalls.
“And, I even sketched it out similar to
what it looks like now and put it there
and figured it out.” This shows her
unwavering belief and determination.
Synergy Group’s strategy centers
on a supportive culture, team
development through workshops, and
an “abundance” mindset. Luz believes
leadership is about serving others. “A
real leader is not there to set the law or
be a boss,” she states. “You’re there to
give people the resources they need
to succeed and help them grow.” This
philosophy strengthened her team and
led to Inc. 5000 recognition.
Luz’s story is one of perseverance.

What inspired you to write this
book?
The inspiration for Hasán’s
Adventures in Puerto Rico is my
son, Hasan, who is now 24 years
old. After Hurricane Katrina, my
husband Ibrahim—who is from

Syria—suggested that I take
Hasan to Puerto Rico for the
summer to learn the language,
heritage, and customs of the
island. That trip sparked a deep
connection to his Puerto Rican
roots, which ultimately inspired
this story. This book is also an
invitation for readers—especially
those who may not speak
Spanish—to explore Puerto Rico’s
rich culture and landmarks.
Why is it important to you to
highlight a main character with a
mixed cultural heritage?
By showcasing a character
with diverse backgrounds, the
book reflects the reality of so
many multicultural families. It
encourages young readers to
embrace their own identities
while appreciating the beauty of
different cultures.
How did you come up with the
concept of including the readalong
feature?
The read-along feature enhances
the experience by providing
correct pronunciations, making it
a more immersive learning tool for
both children and adults. It’s also
a helpful addition for parents who
may not always have time to read
with their children, allowing them
to follow along while enjoying the
vibrant illustrations.

Lisbeth Andrea Philip
Lisbeth Andrea Philip, Assistant Professor of Spanish and
Director of the Certificate Program in Translation and Interpreting
at the University of New Orleans, is a force for change. Born
in Puerto la Cruz, Venezuela, she brings a passion for helping
people and a dedication to education to her work. With six years
at the University of New Orleans, she has not only shared her
knowledge but also created the first and only certified translation
and interpreting program in Louisiana and the Gulf Coast.
Her commitment to facilitating visibility for marginalized
communities is evident in her work, as she strives to provide
access to language and essential public services for those with
limited English proficiency.
To young Latinas entering the field, Philip advises them
to do so with passion and commitment. She emphasizes
the importance of ensuring equitable access to services by
eliminating language barriers.
Beyond the classroom, Philip expresses herself through
abstract ceramic figures, finding another outlet for her creativity.
Karla Herrera
Karla Herrera, a Loan Officer at PrimeLending, dedicates
her work to assisting the Latino community. As a proud
Honduran, she’s driven to help fellow immigrants achieve
the dream of homeownership, moving away from renting.
Witnessing other women gain independence through their
intelligence, perseverance, and daily striving for improvement
fills her with joy.
Karla strongly believes in the power of education. She
takes the time to guide people step-by-step through the
home-buying process. She has seen firsthand that “yes, it’s
possible” and encourages others to believe in their ability to
own their home.
In her free time, Karla enjoys spending time with her family.

Karla cree firmemente en el poder de la educación, y

Agregue más vegetales a su día
¡Comer más vegetales es sencillo!
Comer vegetales es importante
porque aportan vitaminas y
minerales y la mayoría son bajos
en calorías. Para incorporar más
vegetales en su día, tómelos
como bocadillos y agréguelos a
sus comidas.
1. Descubra maneras rápidas de
cocinar. Cocine vegetales frescos
o congelados en el microondas
como acompañamiento
rápido y sencillo de cualquier
comida. Cocine al vapor
judías verdes, zanahorias o
bok choy en un recipiente
con una pequeña cantidad de
agua en el microondas como
acompañamiento rápido de
preparar.
2. Lleve la delantera. Corte
una tanda de pimientos, coliflor
o brócoli. Enváselos en bolsas
para usar cuando el tiempo
sea limitado. Disfrútelos en un
guisado, salteados o como
bocadillo con hummus.
3. Elija vegetales de colores
intensos. Alegre su plato
con vegetales de color rojo,
anaranjado, o verde oscuro. Son
ricos en vitaminas y minerales.
Pruebe calabaza, tomates cherry,
batatas o coles. No solo saben
muy bien, sino que también son
buenos para usted.
4. Revise el pasillo de vegetales
congelados. Los vegetales
congelados son rápidos y fáciles
de usar y son tan nutritivos como
los vegetales frescos. Trate de
agregar vegetales congelados,
como maíz, guisantes, edamame
o espinacas, a su plato favorito.
Busque verduras congeladas que
no tengan salsas, jugos de carne,
mantequilla o crema agregados.
5. Abastézcase de vegetales.
Los vegetales enlatados son una
gran adición a cualquier comida,
así que tenga a mano tomates,
frijoles, garbanzos, champiñones
y remolachas en lata. Seleccione
los que se etiquetan como “sodio
reducido,” “bajo en sodio” o “sin
sal agregada” (“low sodium,”

de más de 20 países instalándose. Imaginen, transmisiones en vivo

sucediendo cada día – ¡Nueva Orleans era el lugar para estar!
¡Incluso Bourbon Street se convirtió en un estudio de televisión!
