Supporting the Food 4 Kids
Backpack Program
Presented by
MARCH 2025 | GBSAN.COM 17
A Message From Our Co-Chairs
Please join us on May 3, 2025, for the 13th Annual San Diego Food Bank
Gala, an unforgettable evening under the stars at our Miramar facility,
dedicated to supporting the youth of our community. This year’s gala
focuses on raising funds for vital programs like the Food 4 Kids Backpack
Program, which provides nutritious meals to children in need.
Our three sponsorship levels—Premier, Specialty, and Host—provide an
opportunity to select the level best for you while helping play a pivotal role in
expanding our reach across the region. Your generous sponsorship will help
ensure no child goes hungry, and make a meaningful difference in the lives
of those who need it most.
We strongly support the mission of the
Jacobs & Cushman San Diego Food Bank
and are honored to serve as the co-chairs for
this year’s gala. We are confident with your
support, this year’s gala will be a tremendous
success.
With Great Appreciation,
Amy Jacobs & Jennifer Anderson
Gala Co-Chairs
Food 4 Kids Backpack Program
The Jacobs & Cushman San Diego Food Bank
has served as San Diego County’s food safety
net for more than 45 years. Through a range
of hunger-relief programs and a dedicated
network of 450 nonprofit partners, we currently
serve 400,000 people countywide per month.
One of the programs that will benefit from
the 2025 Gala is our Food 4 Kids Backpack
Program, which provides weekend backpacks
full of nutritious food to children in elementary
schools throughout the County. These weekend
backpacks help ensure these children have
enough food for the weekend until they return
to school Monday morning.
Help us continue to make a difference for these children and others still
waiting for their chance to participate. It costs just $300 to feed a child
for the entire school year and with your help, we can bring more children
hope. Show your support for the Food 4 Kids Backpack Program by
attending the Food Bank’s upcoming San Diego Food Bank Gala on
Saturday, May 3.

Inspiration
TRANSFORMING LIVES THROUGH
Purposeful Philanthropy
David and Vala Lueth at
the 2024 Showcase Soirée
David and Vala Lueth have a
deep and profound passion for
addressing homelessness, food
insecurity, and aiding foster
youth. While they support
numerous organizations in
Arizona where they reside for
most of the year, their philanthropic footprint in San
Diego centers around one organization: the Lucky
Duck Foundation.
Concerned by San Diego’s homeless crisis, the Lueths
began to research local nonprofits focused on the
issue. They found the Lucky Duck Foundation and
its mission to prevent and alleviate the suffering
of homelessness throughout San Diego County, at
which point they started a thorough due diligence
process. After meeting the Lucky Duck Foundation’s
leadership and several board members, the Lueths
elected to make a meaningful initial contribution
in the Fall of 2023, and used their commitment as a
matching challenge during the “paddle raise” at Lucky
Duck Foundation’s Showcase Soirée. This resulted in
$500,000 in donations.
“We saw it as a great way to compel others to give
and to create an extra sense of urgency,” David shared
with GB Magazine. “We love how others stepped up
to achieve our initial challenge.” David, who built a
very successful petroleum business with his brother in
Arizona, and Vala, a decorated and successful sculptor
and artist, each had very prosperous and distinguished
careers before they met in 2019 and married in 2021.
Their approach to philanthropy is both strategic and
heartfelt. They dedicate time and effort to researching
organizations, going on site visits, getting to know
each organization’s leadership, and taking other steps

to be confident their
contributions will
generate impact.
Recognizing the
positive outcomes
resulting from their
2023 donation, the
Lueths significantly
increased their
support in 2024
by donating more
than $1 million.
This decision was
rooted in their
belief that their
prior donation was
a sound investment
that yielded
measurable
benefits for the
community.
“Their programs
are tangible and
measurable, and
they quantify
their efforts very
effectively. We
wanted to expand
that meaningfully
and help further
position the
Lucky Duck
Foundation
to increase
their reach
substantially,” David added.
Rise Up, one of the many job training and employment
programs funded by Lucky Duck Foundation
“We love that Lucky Duck deploys the funds quickly into
tangible programs and strategies. We feel confident
our $1 million will reach many less fortunate,” said Vala.
“And we love their mantra, ‘share your luck.’ David and
I have been very fortunate over the course of our lives,
and we are so fortunate to help.”
Paddle raise at the
2024 Showcase Soirée
David and Vala’s
extraordinary
$1 million
donation has been
transformative
and their support
helped expand
the foundation’s
programs.
Additionally, thanks
to their generosity,
the Lucky Duck
Foundation was
able to commit
more than $3
million towards
vital initiatives such
as job training and
employment
programs, youth
and senior
homelessness,
and the addition
of new detox
beds and other
immediate
pathways off the
streets.
“We are so
pleased and
humbled to
support the
Lucky Duck
Foundation,”
David said.
“We greatly value their collaborative approach and
use of business principles. Supporting their work at
a high level brings us great fulfillment and we highly
encourage others to do the same.”
The Lueth’s philanthropic journey with the Lucky
Duck Foundation exemplifies how thoughtful, strategic
giving can catalyze meaningful change and inspire
others to follow suit.

About San Diego
Basketball Memories
On The Mesa
BY KEN KRAMER
Team Captain and 1941 All-
American Milton (Milky) Phelps
It was April 1, 2023 and millions
of people around the world
were watching. The entire city
of San Diego held its breath as
announcer Jim Nantz counted
down the final moments with
time running out. “It’s Butler
with two seconds! He’s gotta put
it up… and… he wins it!” Lamont
Butler’s buzzer-beater was truly
one for the ages. The 72-71 victory
sent San Diego State’s basketball team to the National
Championship. Never before had the team gone this
far. Never had they created so much excitement in San
Diego, right? Never. Except maybe once.
It doesn’t get noticed a lot, but among a string of
1941 National
Champs
banners hung high above the seats
at Viejas Arena is one paying tribute
to the Aztecs Basketball Team -
National Champions of 1941.
To know what a big deal it was 84
years ago, it helps to understand that
in each of the two previous seasons,
San Diego State had advanced all
the way to the title game, only to
lose. But in that magical year of
1941 at the Kansas City Convention
Center, the Aztecs, led by forward Milton (Milky)
Phelps, beat Murray State to win it all, and within
the campus community and beyond, the joy could be
scarcely contained. The campus newspaper announced
a triumphal homecoming. “Come down to meet the

at 10:30. Beg,

steal a ride.
Do what you
have to, just
get there!”
Phelps and his
teammates,
including
Mason Harris
and Paul Fern, were gleefully
hailed as heroes. Mayor
P.J. Benbough led a civic
delegation. Learned professors
shook off their academic
stoicism to join the raucous
celebration. Milky Phelps was
named a Helms All-American,
a notable honor for any athlete,
let alone one playing for what
was, at the time, considered to
be a small college.
Looking back, it is
impossible to separate the
accomplishments of that team
from events which would
follow. Only a few months
later the nation would be plunged into World War
II and nothing in the lives of any of those players or
the students who cheered them would ever be the
same. Team member Mason Harris went on to fight
under General Patton and lost his life in Germany.
Paul Fern was killed in action in the Pacific, and
Milky Phelps, a true superstar and one of the most
popular athletes on campus, lost his life during a
Navy training exercise in 1942. Today, his jersey
hangs in the rafters at Viejas, but generations later,
it is likely few fans know of his heroics on and off
the court - or of his Aztec team, that for the first

Todd Schultz
BRINGING LA JOLLA MUSIC SOCIETY TO LIFE
LJMS President and CEO Todd Schultz with Lang
Lang and Gala Chair Susan Hoehn and Bill Hoehn
For the past four years, Todd Schultz has
been the heartbeat of La Jolla Music
Society (LJMS), leading as President
and CEO with a deep passion for
the performing arts. With decades of
experience at The Old Globe, San Diego
Opera, LA Opera, and the San Diego
Symphony, Schultz is doing more than just running an
arts organization - he is shaping a space where music
brings people together in powerful ways.
At the core of his leadership is a belief in connection.
To Schultz, success is just as much about sold-out
performances as it is about creating a vibrant,
collaborative community. Whether it is engaging
with staff, board members, artists, or audiences, he
seeks to foster an open dialogue where creativity
thrives, and where live performances are not just
heard - they are felt.
He has big dreams for The Conrad, LJMS’s stunning
venue in downtown La Jolla. He wants it to be the first
place San Diegans think of when they crave a truly
moving experience - whether that is the intimacy of
a chamber music concert, the high energy of a jazz
performance, or a thought-provoking speaker series
that sparks new ideas.

Schultz’s own
love for music
started in an
unlikely place: a
farm in Kansas.
As a kid, he
stumbled upon
classical music
through public
radio, listening
to Saturday

speakers while driving the tractor. That spark of
curiosity ignited a lifelong passion - one that now fuels
his mission at LJMS.
But for Schultz, it is about more than music. It is about
people. He believes the arts should be welcoming
and accessible to everyone, which is why community
engagement is at the heart of LJMS. From partnering
with local organizations to making sure relationshipbuilding
efforts reach diverse audiences, he is
committed to fostering a sense of belonging.
One of the initiatives closest to
his heart is the free after-school
music program in Barrio
Logan, which has been running
for 25 years. Students in their
new mariachi program recently
won first place in Sacramento
at the California State Fair
Youth Mariachi Competition.
Seeing young students discover
their own love of music and
watching their confidence grow
as they master an instrument
are the moments that remind
him why this work matters.
This season
at LJMS is
packed with
unforgettable
performances,
from the
innovative
sounds of
Third Coast
Percussion,
to Les Arts
Florissants’
mesmerizing
take on Vivaldi’s
Four Seasons,
to a vibrant
celebration of
Mexican culture
with Ballet Folklórico de México, and much more.
Under Schultz’s leadership, La Jolla Music Society
has truly become a hub of San Diego’s cultural life.
Schultz is working to build an atmosphere where
music is something you both hear and feel - something
that connects people and stays with them long after
the final note. Whether it is the music, the moment,
or the shared experience, Schultz ensures that every
time someone steps into The Conrad, they are part of
something special.

It is not every day that you have the
opportunity to plan a major national event.
For Coreen Petti, who joined the University
of San Diego in August 1995, one of her first
tasks was big: plan the country’s second 1996
presidential debate.
That event put USD in the national
spotlight and initiated a storied career for Petti.
She has managed some of the university’s biggest
projects including anniversary celebrations,
inaugurations of USD presidents, building
dedications, USD’s involvement with Major League
Baseball’s All-Star Week, two Super Bowls and
advertising placements during six Olympic Games.
She will retire from her role as Associate Vice
President for University Events and Partnerships at
the end of March after 30 years of service.
“Coreen’s dedication to USD is evident in every
event she has planned and partnership she has
forged,” said Rick Virgin, PhD, vice president
for University Advancement. “Her creativity
and vision have elevated the university in countless
ways and made significant campus milestones
memorable and meaningful.”
In 2009, as part of USD’s 60th anniversary, Petti
established the Founders Gala, USD’s signature
fundraising event. Since then, seven galas raised
more than $10 million for student scholarships.
At the seventh gala, held in 2024 during 75th
anniversary, USD announced a historic $75 million
gift by Darlene Marcos Shiley, chair emerita of
USD’s Board of Trustees.
“Sometimes universities experience moments
that make history and beckon future generations
of students to be a part of its mission,” James T.
Harris III, DEd, President of USD shared with
GB Magazine. “Standing on stage with Mrs. Shiley

Da Vinci’s First Flight Soars
Da Vinci’s First Flight
For centuries,
Leonardo da Vinci’s
relentless curiosity
has captivated the
world. His brilliance
extended beyond
art, pushing the
boundaries of science and
engineering - especially in flight. Now, San Diego
has the exclusive opportunity to experience his
visionary work firsthand with the world premiere of
Da Vinci’s First Flight at the San Diego Air & Space
Museum, presented by the Artisans of Florence on
behalf of the Museum of Leonardo da Vinci.
This immersive exhibition, now open in Balboa
Park, offers more than a glimpse into the past - it
provides an inspirational experience that bridges

history, science, and innovation.
At its core is the intriguing story
of Zoroastro of Peretola, a young
apprentice who may have taken
one of the first human flights in
history. Leonardo’s notebooks
contain detailed sketches and
theories inspired by nature,
demonstrating an understanding of aerodynamics far
ahead of his time. But one question lingers: did he
ever witness his flying machine soar?
The journey begins in 1503, when Leonardo and
Zoroastro allegedly built and tested a glider-like
invention in secret. Clues hidden within Codex
Atlanticus, Leonardo’s extensive collection of writings,
hint at their covert operations: “What followed
remains one of history’s great aviation mysteries.
Beyond its historical significance, the exhibition
serves as an educational experience, inspiring young
minds to explore STEM fields and aviation. The
museum’s commitment to hands-on engagement
ensures that guests do more than observe - they
participate. Visitors can test gliding techniques,
explore da Vinci’s parachute designs, and interact
with intricate flight instruments.
A significant breakthrough came in 2018 when Gabriele
Niccolai uncovered new historical evidence linked to
Zoroastro. This discovery reignited global interest in da
Vinci’s aeronautical ambitions, setting the stage for Da
Vinci’s First Flight to bring new insights to San Diego
audiences.W
Inside the exhibition, visitors step into Leonardo’s
workshop, encountering more than 30 life-sized replicas
of his flying machines, including an awe-inspiring 36-foot
glider - a feat of Renaissance engineering. Other remarkable
designs, such as his mechanical dragonfly and early drone
concepts, further highlight his extraordinary foresight.
As a pillar of San Diego’s cultural and educational
landscape, the San Diego Air & Space Museum
brings the past to life while inspiring the future.
Support from donors plays a vital role in making
world-class exhibitions like this possible, ensuring
the community has access to enriching educational
programming and helping the museum continue its
mission to educate, inspire, and preserve aviation
history for future generations.
Now open, Da Vinci’s First Flight invites visitors
to uncover lost secrets and celebrate the boundless
creativity that continues to shape the future of flight.

Alzheimer’s Association
THE TIME IS NOW
Alzheimer’s disease is
one of the greatest
medical challenges
of our time;
stealing memories,
independence,
and dignity. It is
a relentless disease, not only
impacting those diagnosed but also
placing an immense emotional and
financial burden on families and
caregivers. But there is hope, fueled
by groundbreaking research and the
unwavering determination of scientists, advocates,
and communities. Investing in Alzheimer’s research
is not just important; it is essential. It is the key to
unlocking a future where no one must endure the
heartbreak of watching a loved one fade away.

Every breakthrough in Alzheimer’s
research brings us closer to a world
without this devastating disease.
Researchers are tirelessly uncovering
the causes, identifying risk factors,
and developing treatments that could
slow, stop, or even reverse cognitive
decline. Recent advancements in
early detection and innovative drug
therapies offer promise, but we must
push forward with even greater
urgency. Time is precious, and every
day without a cure means more lives
affected, more families shattered.
Ending Alzheimer’s is not just a medical goal; it is a
moral imperative. It is about preserving the stories,
wisdom, and love that define us. It is about ensuring
that future generations do not have to fear losing

lifetimes of memories. We
must continue funding
research, supporting

to Dr. Rema Raman, a
Professor of Neurology at
Keck School of Medicine.
Dr. Raman’s innovative
work is changing the course
of Alzheimer’s research
and helping clear the
path for better treatments

Together, we can and must

A Legacy of Giving
SAM & VALINDA MCGOVERN HONORED
AT HOME OF GUIDING HANDS’ ANNUAL GALA
For Sam and Valinda McGovern, community service is
not just an obligation, it is a passion that has shaped
their lives and careers. As honorees for the 51st Annual
Home of Guiding Hands (HGH) Gala, the McGoverns’
journey with HGH is a testament to the power of
dedication, advocacy, and heartfelt generosity.
Sam’s introduction to HGH began after moving
to San Diego from West Virginia, where he had served as a
police officer before transitioning into law and business. Seeking
ways to connect with the community, he joined the Chamber
of Commerce and met members of HGH’s leadership team.
Their mission resonated deeply with him, particularly after his
experiences encountering underserved individuals with
intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD)
during his time in law enforcement.
Organizations
like HGH do
life-changing
work, but they
need stronger
backing to
continue and
expand their
impact.
“I saw firsthand how a lack of resources
affected people with IDD and their families,”
Sam shared with GB Magazine. “HGH was
different, it was a place where clients were
supported, uplifted, and empowered.”
His commitment quickly turned
into action, leading him to serve on
committees and later on HGH’s Board of
Directors. Valinda, a previous nonprofit
director in West Virginia, found herself
equally drawn to HGH. Initially introduced
to the organization through Sam, she was
deeply moved by the warmth of the staff, the
enthusiasm of the clients, and the tangible impact of
HGH’s work.
Beyond their roles with HGH, the McGoverns
are highly involved in initiatives that enhance the
quality of life in East County and beyond. Sam
serves on the board of the East County Chamber
of Commerce and is vice chair of its government
affairs committee. He has also been active with the
76 MARCH 2025 | GBSAN.COM
Sam McGovern
Boys and Girls Club of East County,
Crisis House, and the Lakeside
Community Planning Group. Their
shared passion for animal welfare
has also led them to support rescue
organizations, particularly those
focused on Greyhound adoption.
Their advocacy extends beyond
community engagement, it is
about ensuring that individuals
with IDD receive the recognition
and support they deserve. “The
government and community need
to prioritize disability services at a
much higher level,” Sam emphasizes.
“Organizations like HGH do lifechanging
work, but they need
stronger backing to continue and
expand their impact.”
Sam and Valinda McGovern
The McGoverns’ dedication will be
celebrated at the 51st Annual Home of
Guiding Hands Gala, an evening dedicated
to honoring champions of the IDD
community while raising crucial funds for
the organization’s programs. Guests will
enjoy an unforgettable night of fine dining,
entertainment, and philanthropy, all in
support of HGH’s mission to empower
individuals with disabilities.
Sam and Valinda’s hopes for the future
are simple yet powerful: to see greater
advocacy, funding, and community
involvement in IDD services. “The joy and
fulfillment that HGH brings to its clients
and families is extraordinary,” Valinda
shares. “Being part of that story is one of the
most rewarding experiences of our lives.”
Join us on this special evening to celebrate
the McGoverns’ contributions and support
the continued work of Home of Guiding
Hands. May 3, 2025 at the Pendry Hotel
San Diego will be a special evening to
celebrate the McGoverns’ contributions
to Home of Guiding Hands and the
community.

Gala
Currents
Chaired by Board
Member Chris
Birchby and
Adrienne Birchby,
the theme at
this year’s MCASD Gala was
“Currents.” Contemporary art is
a transformative force moving us
to think and feel things in new
ways, much as ocean currents
direct the flow of water from
one place to another. Attendees
enjoyed an exhilarating evening
overlooking the shimmering
waves in La Jolla as they
celebrated contemporary art,
artists, and their impact on the
community.

Con Chris Birchby y
Adrienne Birchby,
miembros de la
comisión directiva como
anfitriones de la gala de
MCASD, la temática de este año fue
“Currents”. El arte contemporáneo es
una fuerza transformadora que nos
mueve a pensar y sentir de maneras
diferentes, en gran medida como lo
hacen las corrientes oceánicas con
el agua. Los presentes disfrutaron de
una encantadora velada celebrando
el arte contemporáneo, sus artistas
e impacto en la comunidad con las
resplandecientes olas de La Jolla de
