MESSAGE FROM THE BOARD

W

iarton Willy predicted an early

spring as he did not see his

shadow. Spring is a time of new

beginnings, fresh starts, and renewal.

Over the coming months, I look forward

to continuing to build capacity and

opportunities in our association.

We continue to meet with City

representatives to discuss the proposed

five-year Community Benefit Agreement

with the City of Guelph. In December, we

purchased a new software system to

replace the City of Guelph’s RecEnroll

system called MySeniorsCentre. Our staff

and volunteers will be participating in

training to make sure we are ready for

the implementation of our new software.

As of April 1 st , registrations,

memberships, and activity fee payments

will be made through our new front

counter space (named the Hub), which

will be constructed in the area where the

Treasure Chest presently resides. The

Treasure Chest will be moved to the wall

between the gym and the Bistro.

Initially, we will have staff/volunteers to

operate the Hub from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

every day. Going forward, this reception

area will house our Welcome Desk

volunteers, and they will be happy to

provide you with copies of The Sentinel

newsletter and answer any questions you

may have about the Centre. You will see

lots of activity in the next weeks as the

Hub is being constructed. As of April 1 st ,

you will no longer need to go the city

The Sentinel • March 2025 • Vol.49 No.7

front desk for anything to do with

GWSA—look to the Hub!

This month we will be losing two of our

Board Members—Cathryn Cortissoz and

Karen Kelly are leaving Canada to

immigrate to Australia. We are sad to

see them go, but we wish them all the

best in their new home. On behalf of the

Board and our members I just want to

thank them for all the wonderful work

they have done on the Governance and

Membership & Marketing Committees.

As I mentioned in last month’s message,

the Board and the Finance Committee

regularly discuss how to expand our

existing revenue streams—and that

includes membership and activity fees.

Last month’s Sentinel included a list of

updated activity and membership fees,

which become effective April 1st. The

updated list in this month’s Sentinel

provides more details regarding all our

activity group programs and new fees.

Every week someone stops me in the hall

and tells me they’ve heard a rumour

about some of the changes that are

coming—I’m always happy to stop and

provide clarity. Our goal is to have a

smooth transition to the new system, but

we all know that there may be some

unexpected bumps and surprises along

the way. Thank you for your patience

and good humour.

Pat Gage, President

The Guelph Wellington Seniors Association mission has always been to enable older

adults to be active, involved, make friends and age with dignity.

GWSA GROUP ACTIVITY INFORMATION

Y

our GWSA membership includes a copy of The Sentinel newsletter published ten

times a year, and the ability to join any of our many activities and events. Our

activity groups use two models for collecting group fees: pay-as-you-play or a yearly

activity fee (all fees include HST). 1 We also offer regular educational and informational

workshops, many at no charge for our members.

Note: All activity groups require an up-to-date GWSA membership to participate.

Art in the Hall

Art in the Hall is an opportunity for all

artisans to showcase their work. We

display the fine artistic talents on two

large walls in front of our Library and a

dedicated window space for smaller

items.

GWSA receives 20% commission from

each sale. To purchase any of the art

pieces, the staff at the HUB desk will

assist you.

Kim Taylor

artinthehall@gwsa-guelph.ca

Art Studio

Art Studio is an art collective. Artists are

welcome to work with their medium of

choice. Current techniques practiced

include watercolour, acrylic, drawing,

pastels, greeting card creation, and

diamond dots. While new mediums are

encouraged, the centre is now scentfree,

so materials with strong odours,

such as oil paints, are not permitted.

Artists must supply their own materials

and manage their own projects. While

there's no formal instruction, members

frequently exchange tips and insights.

Additionally, members are eligible to

display their work in Art in the Hall

exhibits at the Evergreen Centre.

The Future of AI

By Sentinel Editor

I

magine a world

where machines

help with daily

tasks, making life

easier and more

enjoyable. The

future of artificial

intelligence (AI)

holds great promise, offering solutions to

many of today’s challenges.

AI is already transforming healthcare by

providing faster and more accurate

diagnoses. For instance, AI algorithms

can analyze medical images, allowing

doctors to detect diseases like cancer

more quickly. This technology not only

saves time but also improves patient

outcomes. Moreover, AI can help

personalize treatment plans based on

individual patient data, making

healthcare more effective. By integrating

AI into medical practices, the overall

quality of healthcare can increase

significantly, leading to healthier

communities.

In the field of education, AI can create

tailored learning experiences for

students. Adaptive learning platforms

use AI to assess a student's strengths

and weaknesses, providing personalized

resources to improve their skills. For

example, programs like DreamBox

Learning help students in mathematics

by adjusting the difficulty of problems

based on their performance. This kind of

individualized attention can lead to better

academic results and a more engaged

learning experience. AI has the potential

to revolutionize education, making it

accessible and effective for all learners.

Environmental sustainability also stands

to benefit from AI advancements. Smart

technologies can optimize energy usage

in homes and buildings, reducing waste

and lowering costs. For instance, AI can

manage heating and cooling systems by

predicting when they are needed most.

Furthermore, AI can assist in monitoring

wildlife and natural resources, helping to

protect endangered species and manage

ecosystems more effectively. By

harnessing AI, society can work towards

a more sustainable planet.

In conclusion, the future of AI is bright,

with the potential to revolutionize

healthcare, education, and the

environment. These advancements can

lead to healthier lives, better learning

experiences, and a more sustainable

world. Embracing AI technology can

bring about positive change, making life

better for everyone. The time has come

to invest in AI, as it may hold the key to

a better future.
