Representatives of Massachusetts-based
Vanguard Renewables say they will meet
with opposing residents “in the ensuing
months” concerning their plans to build an
anaerobic digester adjacent to Wilson Road
in Fairfield Township, just south of West
Jefferson.
The facility, proposed on a 20-acre parcel on
the north side of Wilson Road, west of Sparling
Road, would convert organic food waste into
renewable natural gas and fertilizer.
The Madison County Commissioners and
Fairfield Township trustees have each adopted
resolutions opposing the proposal, and residents
have organized through social media to
oppose it, citing concerns about air pollution,
truck traffic, water contamination, falling
property values, and other potential risks.
“We will bring in experts to dispel a lot of
disinformation,” Billy Kepner, director of
government affairs and community relations
for Vanguard Renewables, said about
the yet-to-be-set public sessions.
Kepner was not present at a Feb. 20 meeting
at West Jefferson High School, where residents
and elected officials from West Jefferson,
Fairfield Township and outlying areas convened
to unite in their opposition to it.
“We weren’t invited,” Kepner said.
An attorney for Vanguard
Renewables
was present on Feb. 20 but did not speak.
Opponents, however, called him out on several
occasions, including during a playback
of a meeting in September where Vanguard
Renewables first explained the proposal.
Residents at the Feb. 20 meeting criticized
the responses in the recording, with
some publicly calling for Vanguard Renewables
to simply abandon the proposed project
and “go home.”
Kepner acknowledged that Vanguard Renewables
could have planned better for that
September session but will offer the opportunity
for residents to accurately understand its
plans at a future public meeting.
“We will host community conversations in
the coming months,” Kepner said, possibly as
early as mid-March.
Meanwhile, opponents gathered to collectively
voice their concerns about the project
and they learned about a proposed house bill
that could regulate how anaerobic digesters
are built in the future.
J.T. Ysseldyke, legislative aid to Ohio
Rep. Brian Stewart (R-Ashville), who represents
Ohio’s 12th House District, including
Madison County, said Stewart drafted a
house bill that would allow township
trustees and village councils to regulate the
construction and operation of anaerobic digesters
but only when such facilities are not
connected to a natural gas pipeline, according
to Ysseldyke.

(OSHP) Superintendent Col. Charles Jones
announced last Feb. 21 that enhanced aviation
downlink technology is now available
for use by local law enforcement statewide.
The expanded technology allows OSHP's
Aviation Unit to transmit live feeds of aerial
video footage to command staff on the
ground during active investigations and
emergencies. Previously available only to
local law enforcement in the areas surrounding
Columbus and Akron, nine strategically
placed downlink receivers now make it possible
to transmit aerial video from anywhere
in the state.
“This technology virtually puts the onground
incident commander up in the sky
with our Ohio State Highway Patrol team,
giving them broader perspectives of active
scenes and more information
to help
make critical public
safety decisions,"
said DeWine. "Before
now, local law enforcement
relied on
the Patrol to describe
aerial views via
radio, but giving
them the ability to
see the scene with
their own eyes is so
much more effective."
Ohio is believed to
be only the second state in the nation capable
of downlinking live aerial video anywhere
within its state lines. Any agency
with internet access and the correct credentials
can view the live stream.
"The expansion of the downlink program
represents an advancement in our collaborative
public safety efforts,” said Colonel Charles
A. Jones, patrol superintendent. “Providing
real-time aerial footage directly to our law enforcement
partners enhances situational
awareness, speeds response times and supports
informed decisions to protect our communities.”
On average, OSHP's Aviation Unit responds
to more than 1,000 calls for support

each year. Missions include violent crime
reduction initiatives, criminal suspect
searches, missing persons searches, storm
damage assessments, and vehicle pursuits.
“Many of Ohio’s law enforcement agencies,
especially in the rural parts of the state,
don’t have aviation capabilities,” said Director
Wilson, Ohio Department of Public
Safety. “This incredible asset provides a
valuable resource to help those agencies
fight crime and protect the public.”
The technology expansion was funded
primarily with state and federal funding
awarded through the Ohio Violent Crime
Reduction Grant Program.
Mystery author at book club
The Book Club of the First United Methodist Church of
Mount Sterling featured a visit from award-winning author
Alicia Anthony. A discussion was held about her work, “Inherent
Truth” which is the first book in her murder mystery
trilogy “Blood Secrets.”
“It was a real page turner!” said book club member Sue Shilling. “ We had a great
discussion and are reading the remaining two in the trilogy next. Alicia is from London
and married a guy from MP. The town in the book vaguely resembled London.
There are little Ohio nuggets that one can pick out if familiar with the territory.”
All three books are available to purchase online and in bookstores. Amazon offers
the Kindle editions for $0.99 each and the paperbacks for $15.99 each. The UMC
book club meets on the third Tuesday of the month at 7:00 p.m.

Jonathan Alder Cheer brings home state championship
Last weekend, the Jonathan Alder competition cheer team brought home the Division III state champion trophy
for the state of Ohio. Per head coach Kelly Sifrit, the competition team “is a separate squad that girls are required
to try out for, and tumbling is required. We are a very young team. Our squad consists of 11 girls on the
mat and one alternate. We are very fortunate that we do not have any seniors this year.”
Sifrit said that because they are mostly underclassman, the practices are strenuous.
“Girls have had to not only shift their mindset to a winning mentality but also adjust to high school as well as
high school athletics very quickly,” Sifrit said.
The last time the Pioneers won the state title was 2009. Sifrit credits assistant coach Kaylie Kindler as playing
a large role in the team’s success.
“She has been an awesome addition to the program this year and played a huge role in the mindset shift of
the team,” Kindler said. “She joined Alder cheer this season and spent many hours watching the routine and
giving feedback.”

The students of London High School are
gearing up for a spectacular spring production
of "9 to 5: The Musical," set to take the
stage at 7 p.m. March 6-8 in the school’s
Joyce Hildebrand Auditorium. This highly
anticipated event promises to be a delightful
showcase of talent, creativity, and hard work.
“From the recognizable opening notes of
Dolly Parton’s title number, ‘9 to 5’ until the
finale, this show is full of catchy songs, witty
dialogue, and relatable characters,” said director
Jessi Dunham.
The three main women at the center of
the story are sarcastic, hard-working Violet
(senior Lily Beyer), naive new employee
Judy (senior Isabella Kerry), and no-nonsense
country girl Doralee (junior Madison
Estep). They have such a fun dynamic between
the three of them and all deliver both
heartfelt and hilarious moments with ease.
Madison has really embraced the Doralee
role (originally played by Dolly Parton) and
is so fun to watch.
Based on the 1980 hit movie and featuring
music and lyrics by Dolly Parton, "9 to
5: The Musical" tells the story of sarcastic,
hard-working Violet (senior Lily Beyer),
naive new employee Judy (senior Isabella
Kerry), and no-nonsense country girl Doralee
(junior Madison Estep) who band together
to take on their “sexist, egotistical,
lying, hypocritical bigot” of a boss, Franklin
Hart, Jr. (senior Isaiah Capell).
“They have such a fun dynamic between
the three of them and all deliver both heartfelt
and hilarious moments with ease,” Dunham
said. “Madison has really embraced the
Doralee role (originally played by Dolly Parton)
and is so fun to watch.”
The students have really embraced the
look and feel of the show, and it will take audience
members right back to 1979 and the
kitschy feel of the original movie.
“The students love performing shows like
this with more adult humor and the empowering
message of standing up for yourself,”
Dunham said. “Adult audiences are going to
love the hilarious situations, optimistic messages,
and great music that we’ve come to
associate with Dolly Parton.”
The cast and crew have been working
tirelessly to bring this production to life.
Nine of the cast members are seniors who
are familiar faces to the Hildenbrand stage.
“We are very, very blessed that a lot of
these kids have participated in theater productions
for all four years,” said producer
Jodi Homan.
Passes for the show are available through
events.hometownticketing.com.Just enter
“London High School” in the website’s search
bar. Tickets are $12 for adults and $8 for
students. Tickets may also be purchased at
the door with cash.
The show is choreographed by Danielle
Fredette and Julia Revilla, with costume design
by Jodi Homan, Helen Studebaker, and
Kara Thoman. The lead for set design and
construction is Patrick Dunkley.
The storyline is rounded out by the
snitching assistant Roz (senior Kaity Chastain),
the sweet, “hunky accountant” Joe
(sophomore Kolby Thoman), and a whole
host of characters around the office, including
Kaity Chastain as Roz, Kolby Thoman
as Joe, Garek Logue (Dwayne), Tate Wilson
(Josh), Madison Osborne (Missy), Isabelle
Litchfield (Maria), Gael Juarez Perez (Dick),
Lilly Studebaker (Kathy), Addison Fraysier
(Margaret), Garek Logue (Bob), Ethan
Davitt (Tinsworthy), Audrina Maynard (Detective),
Isabel Hines (Doctor), Freya Byrd
(Candy Striper), Karlie Hartman (Hospital
Intern), and Julia Mullins (New Employee).
“Directing this show has been so much
fun and I’ve loved introducing these kids to
the characters and messages of the original
movie,” Dunham said. “I’m so excited to
bring together our weeks of hard work for
the community to see.”

High School's talented students in action!

BURGESS
Joe Vernon Burgess, a loving husband,
patient father, adoring grandfather and
great-grandfather, passed away peacefully
on Feb. 19, 2025 in the Bluebird Retirement
Community, at the age of 91, surrounded by
his loving family.
Born Sept. 13, 1933, in Greenup Kentucky,
he was a son of Curtis Burgess and
Lydia (Skeens) Burgess. Joe met his forever
sweetheart, Lucille “Lucy” Marie (Shoemaker)
Burgess following high school. The
two wed on June 15, 1956, and have since
spent the past 68 years together until the
time of her passing just nine days earlier on
Feb. 10. Their love truly knew no bounds,
and they ensured to raise their family with
the same love and compassion that united
them together.
Professionally, Joe had worked as a corrections
officer at the London Correctional
Institution where he also taught carpentry.
A true workaholic, Joe never liked to remain
idle on his days off, and therefore also
served as a residential carpenter on the
side. He was a long-time member of the London

passing has left a void in our hearts, we are
comforted knowing that Joe and Lucy have
been reunited in glory.

The Southeastern High School Theatre is
thrilled to announce its upcoming production
of the beloved musical "The Music Man." The
performances will take place on March 7 and
8 at the school's auditorium.
"The Music Man," a classic American musical
by Meredith Willson, tells the story of
con artist Harold Hill (Trenton Davis), who
poses as a boys' band organizer and leader.
He plans to scam the townsfolk of by selling
them instruments and uniforms for a band he
never intends to organize. However, his plans
are complicated when he falls for the town's
librarian, Marian Paroo (Alison Hennigan).
Under the direction of Laura Madden, the
cast and crew have been working tirelessly
to bring this timeless tale to life.
"We have a large cast and crew of 43 students
from grades 7 -12. Many of our cast
are seasoned veterans, and we have nine
seniors, but we also have 11 first-time musical
students. They have been working
since the beginning of January to bring this
show to the stage," said Madden. "Harold
Hill is played by veteran senior Trenton
Davis (his fourth show at Southeastern).
Marian the Librarian is played by newcomer
Alison Hennigan (she is a sophomore). Also
playing main roles are senior Justin Callicoat
(Marcellus
Washburn), senior
Sarah Rheinscheld
(Mrs. Paroo), sophomore
Trenton Stiles
(Mayor Shinn), and
junior Elizabeth
Beam (Eulalie Mackecknie
Shinn)."

Madden added, "We chose this show because
of the opportunity to involve 7th and
8th graders, as well as having multiple fun
roles for our experienced cast members. This
was the first show I directed at Southeastern
in 2003, so it seemed like a good time to bring
back this classic. We are actually using the
backdrops for the train scene that were
painted in 2003!"
Audiences will love traveling back in time
