FAYERWEATHER STREET

SCHOOL STRATEGIC

PLANNING CHAIR

Fayerweather’s new strategic plan, Fayerweather 2030: A Future of

Purpose, is more than just a set of goals we hope to achieve; it’s also a

vision for the future rooted in our faith in Fayerweather’s mission, our

belief in the capacity of the Fayerweather community, and our awareness

of a world that needs the kinds of compassionate education that is at the

heart and soul of this grand experiment we started almost sixty years ago.

You’ll see in this plan an ambitiously necessary set of priorities for

Fayerweather, priorities focused on situating our academic program

in community and place, more deeply understanding the needs of our

students now and in the future, and ensuring that our space, schedule,

and financial model are attuned to the requirements of the program and

the community. We envision through these priorities a Fayerweather

that is recognized as a beacon of progressive education, making the

lives of our students and families richer with curiosity, creativity,

and social responsibility.

Thank you for being a part of the Fayerweather community and for

believing in our students. We look forward to working alongside you

to turn this plan into action.

FAYERWEATHER STREET SCHOOL

STRATEGIC PLAN VISION

By 2030, Fayerweather

will be recognized as a

BEACON OF

PROGRESSIVE EDUCATION

where students thrive through a

DYNAMIC, PLACE-BASED

CURRICULUM

that inspires curiosity, creativity,

and social responsibility. Our

INNOVATIVE APPROACH

will elevate academic rigor

and emotional intelligence,

NURTURING

LEARNERS

who are

CRITICAL THINKERS +

COMPASSIONATE LEADERS

ready to address the challenges of tomorrow.

FAYERWEATHER STREET SCHOOL

MISSION + PHILOSOPHY

Fayerweather’s mission is to cultivate a joyful and collaborative learning community

that honors every student’s unique story, promoting growth through intellectual

exploration, creative thinking, and meaningful engagement with our world and each other.

THE FAYERWEATHER EXPERIENCE IS GUIDED BY

FOUR CORE VALUES

THE PILLARS OF OUR EDUCATIONAL APPROACH:

• Fully knowing each child is the heart of a great education

• There is potential for joy in all learning

• Learning in community is complex and powerful

• Education must address the themes and issues of our time

GOAL

1

BEACON OF PROGRESSIVE EDUCATION

DYNAMIC, PLACE-BASED CURRICULUM

INNOVATIVE APPROACH

Elevate Fayerweather’s

EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING MODEL

OBJECTIVE: Elevate our progressive education and experiential learning model by integrating principles of

place-based education. Establish Fayerweather’s distinctive competitive position

as a leader in place-based progressive education by clearly articulating our unique academic approach and

adding opportunities for place-based learning and student engagement.

RATIONALE: Rooted in the progressive education movement,

place-based learning moves beyond traditional classroom settings

by immersing students in real-world contexts, allowing them to

apply knowledge meaningfully, fostering deeper engagement and a

love of learning. By building stronger partnerships, 1enriching

community relationships, and expanding learning across all core subjects,

we can differentiate ourselves in a competitive educational landscape while

preparing our students to think critically, act responsibly, and engage with the

world around them.

GOAL

NURTURING LEARNERS

CRITICAL THINKERS +COMPASSIONATE LEADERS

2

Clarify and Better Define Fayerweather’s Capacity to

SUPPORT A RANGE OF STUDENTS’ COGNITIVE,

SOCIAL, + EMOTIONAL LEARNING PROFILES

OBJECTIVE: Define Fayerweather’s capacity to provide an inclusive and personalized learning environment

for students with a range of cognitive, social, and emotional learning profiles. Define and package current

and additional services and accommodations in a comprehensive support framework that clearly outlines

the profiles of students best served by Fayerweather’s mission and approach to learning. Highlight the

elements of the FSS experience and individual services that make FSS a uniquely welcoming and impactful

choice for a range of learners.

RATIONALE: At Fayerweather, we have seen more students and applicants with cognitive,

sensory, and behavioral profile variations. There remains an opportunity to better

define and clarify the learning profiles we can best support and, thus, what

students are best served by a Fayerweather education. Providing this

transparency supports enrollment by presenting a clear value

proposition to current and prospective families,

establishing guidelines for enrollment practices,

2

and setting expectations for the educators

we employ.

GOAL

3

BEACON OF PROGRESSIVE EDUCATION

NURTURING LEARNERS

CRITICAL THINKERS + COMPASSIONATE LEADERS

Deepen Commitment to

DIVERSITY, EQUITY, INCLUSION,

BELONGING, + JUSTICE (DEIBJ)

OBJECTIVE: Ensure Fayerweather is a community where all individuals feel seen,

heard, and valued by continuing to strengthen structures that allow full,

authentic participation.

RATIONALE: Fayerweather has long led independent schools in advancing

Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, Belonging, and Justice (DEIBJ) initiatives. This

investment reflects our firm belief that diversity 3strengthens our community

and enriches the place-based educational experience in that a diverse school

community broadens the economic, cultural, and ecological perspectives our

students engage in learning. However, the work is ongoing, and we remain

deeply committed to constantly evaluating and enhancing our efforts to

ensure that Fayerweather is a place where all members can thrive, feel seen,

and be fully supported in their academic and personal 3growth.

GOAL

4

DYNAMIC, PLACE-BASED CURRICULUM

INNOVATIVE APPROACH

NURTURING LEARNERS

Reimagine

TIME, SPACE, + SCHEDULE

OBJECTIVE: Optimize the school schedule and use of

physical space to support interdisciplinary, place-based,

4

and project-inspired learning while ensuring the

well-being of both students and staff.

RATIONALE: Fayerweather’s building at 765 Concord Avenue has been

a warm and engaging space for students since our move in 1999, but we

recognize the opportunity for a more comprehensive reimagining of our

space to further support our community’s growth and needs. Additionally, to fully embrace

place-based learning (Goal #1), the current schedule must be evaluated to ensure that it allows students

and teachers the flexibility and uninterrupted time blocks necessary to engage deeply with their

surroundings. Shifting the schedule to prioritize this immersive, context-rich, cross-disciplinary exploration

will enhance learning outcomes and strengthen community connections.

GOAL

5

BEACON OF PROGRESSIVE EDUCATION

INNOVATIVE APPROACH

NURTURING LEARNERS

Ensure Financial

ACCESSIBILITY + SUSTAINABILITY

OBJECTIVE: Ensure that our revenue model supports robust

enrollment by balancing tuition affordability with sufficient

resources to maintain and build the quality of our programs.

5

RATIONALE: As a small school with a small endowment, Fayerweather’s

finances have been remarkably stable over the last 20 years, achieved through

thoughtful budget planning, careful enrollment management, intelligent use of our

cash resources, an expanded and revitalized development program, and diversification

of our revenue streams. As the population of school-age children in the Greater Boston area decreases,

however, Fayerweather is subject to increased competition from other independent schools and an

excellent public school system, which has implications for both our financial stability and our ability to

meet our mission.
