OUNDERS’ LETTER

The first day of a new year always has us dreaming of starting

over, making resolutions, or finding a fresh approach with

new ideas. That’s how we keep things exciting and innovative

at Pulp Design Studios. We’re always reinventing what design

can be and we’re looking to the future for our business and our clients.

In this latest issue of ICON, we’re showcasing new beginnings, whether

that’s a more modern look for an historic home, a fabulous before and

after, or trends that we see on the horizon.

We’re also featuring “resolution rooms” in this issue, which are those

spaces that we know you have been dreaming of as you set your

intentions for 2025. They could be home gyms, new offices, organized

pantries and closets, or even game rooms.

This issue of ICON also showcases new ideas from Pulp, including how to

create curb appeal, insight into the best tips for kitchen makeovers, and

innovative art.

No matter what new beginnings you may have planned for this year, we

hope you enjoy this issue of ICON and we look forward to continuing

our Pulp adventures with you!

TREND WATCH

10

For the Pulp team, starting

a new project always

begins with an inspiration

board like the one you see

above. It helps us define

our client’s style and gives

us a guide for the interiors.

Here are some of

our favorite and inspiring

trends right now!

1

1.ANIMAL ATTRACTION.

A playful catchall bowl from Haas is

crafted in an eye-catching gold and

matte black. It’s made of porcelain

and embellished with 24K gold.

2. ARTISTIC IMPRESSIONS.

Matisse’s cut-outs were the

inspiration for a handpainted

wallcovering from Porter Teleo, soon

to be seen in a Pulp project in Florida.

4

2

3

5

3. MIXED METALS.

Carolina gave these Stevie hoops

from Mejuri to Beth for Christmas.

They are two-toned and can be

worn in multiple ways, which is a

perfect fit for Beth’s style!

4. SPRING INSPO FROM DIOR.

The stunning ads from Dior in

Architectural Digest offer a moody

take on spring fashions.

6

5. AN HONOR TO REMEMBER.

A friend and fellow designer who passed

too soon, Traci Zeller gave this necklace to

the Pulp duo. To honor her, Pulp is asking

for donations to a scholarship in her name

at VCU. To give, enter Traci’s name in

“Special Instructions.”

6. INFUSED BEAUTY. Donghia’s

Blockbuster wallcovering is infused with

mica, giving it a stunning glow.

7

9

7. ARCHITECTURAL STYLE.

The new Hermès H Booming bracelet

is inspired by architectural design.

Gorgeous in black and gold, it was

featured in the Winter issue of Elle Decor.

8. SURPRISING LEATHER LOOKS.

These beautiful leather samples are

meant to be used as flooring, a luxe and

surprisingly durable idea from EcoDomo.

8

10

9. TIMELESS TEXTURES.

Mohair and woven checks are timeless

looks that are elevated by both color and

style in these luxe Donghia fabrics that

Pulp is using in a mountain project.

10. ETERNAL SPRING.

This grasscloth brings spring vibes while

still retaining a modern style. It’s the Gru

Magnus design from Schumacher in a

lovely beige and gray palette.

STARTING

OVER

Old Home,

New Look

Pulp Design Studios Transformed a 1913

Historic Seattle Home with Interiors

Full of Personality and Flair

Pulp loves to create beautiful homes, but we also want to be sure that

each home functions perfectly for our clients. When we took on a

6,000-square-foot project in the Laurelhurst neighborhood of Seattle,

it was an historic home from 1913, and the owners wanted to give it a

new life with a more modern style. While there were stunning architectural

features like stained glass windows and original doors, there were also odd

nooks and crannies in the layout. Pulp came to the rescue with interiors full

of personality and flair.

12

13

STARTING OVER

A new look should definitely start at the

front door, so Pulp took advantage of

the stunning original stained glass door

to use a glass sculpture for a light fixture

in the entry. Modern art and a fabulous

bench help set the tone for the decor in

the surrounding rooms.

14

15

STARTING OVER

The dining room has a lovely balance of

historic and modern design. The color

palette is calm, with a dreamy quality

that’s enhanced by the custom-colored

Porter Teleo wallcovering on the

ceiling. It’s the perfect backdrop for the

breathtaking Oly light fixture.

16

17

18

19

STARTING OVER

The kitchen had a low-key redesign, with

new fixtures, hardware, and a backsplash

inspired by the lake views just outside.

20

21

The den is a beautifully quiet gathering

place for our clients to recharge and

reconnect with views to the beautiful

lake just outside.

The room offers a lot of space for guests

and family, including functional ottomans

that can pull out for extra seating.

22

23

STARTING OVER

Pulp used the art and architecture to inspire the furnishings in the living room.

An embroidered fabric on the sofas is creatively placed to add visual interest,

with the seats covered in a performance velvet. The layout of this older home

was a challenge and Pulp designed different ways to give every inch of the home

a strong personality. We turned a breakfast room into a reading nook with a

game table, including a great banquette with custom fringe

24

25

STARTING OVER

These clients had incredible works of art

and mementos that they had collected

on their travels. They added so much

personality to the historic home.

Swivel chairs can turn to take in the view

of the lake or can move to the perfect

position for conversation.

26

27

STARTING OVER

The gorgeous views of the lake inspired the tranquil

palette in the primary suite. Textures and subtle

patterns offer a quiet character and personality,

including fabrics from Pulp’s S.Harris collection.

ROOMS

This is the time when we all set our intentions and resolutions for a new year. Pulp believes

that a home should always support the way you want to live, so we’ve become experts at

creating spaces that will help you stick to your goals for 2025!

Wellness

Rooms

Personal wellness and self care are

always on-trend, so rooms that can

support those goals are definitely on the

top of our clients’ lists for their homes.

That can include home gyms, yoga rooms,

spa bathrooms, steam shower rooms,

saunas, and even indoor pools. Our own

Pulp team has included these healthful

spaces in their personal homes!

32

33

RESOLUTION ROOMS

Organized

Spaces

There’s nothing better than having a place for

everything, and everything in its place. We

spend a lot of time with our clients talking

about how they use their homes and what they

need to organize and put away. We want to

give them the perfect storage for every single

item, whether that’s in a pantry, a closet, or

even in a home organizing station that keeps

appointments and mail where it needs to be.

34

35

RESOLUTION ROOMS

Home

Bars

Spending more time with family and friends is

on a lot of goal lists for 2025, and what better

way to entertain than with a home bar?!

Whether our clients are shaking up signature

cocktails or fun-for-the-family mocktails, Pulp

offers everything they need at home. In these

home bars we’ve designed across the country,

we included wine storage, drink fridges, sinks,

microwave drawers for snacks, and storage

for all the glasses and accessories. Bar stools

accommodate guests, and in one Seattle

home, we even made it an indoor/outdoor

space with a roll-up window.

36

37

RESOLUTION ROOMS

Game

Rooms

Making your home a destination for fun should definitely be

one of your resolutions for 2025. Pulp creates unique game

and play spaces that little kids love, that even teens will think

are cool, and that support game nights for the adults in the

home. We’re even in the process of designing a golf simulation

room that we’ll unveil in the coming months, so stay tuned!

38

39

RESOLUTION ROOMS

Home

Offices

If one of your resolutions is to write

a novel, start a new business, or just

work from home more often, having a

dedicated space for that all-important

goal is key! Pulp has created home offices

with plenty of space, desks that tuck into

kitchens or bedrooms, and homework

spaces for the kids in the home. And

we always offer clever solutions like

pop-up outlets, hidden storage, and cord

management.

Before

& After

Modern Organics

Pulp Design Studios gave this modern

Seattle treehouse an innovative makeover

Pulp originally helped this client with a fabulous

furnishings package, and she was so happy with the

result that she decided she wanted to go even further.

So we came in with an innovative redesign that

breathed new life into this modern treehouse. Take a look at

the rooms before and the stunning results after we got to work!

Interior Design: PULP DESIGN STUDIOS

Photographer: CODY ULRICH

Location: SEATTLE

Builder: PROFORM BUILDS

The home’s location on a tree-lined property inspired

the organic materials and chic neutral palette.

42

43

BEFORE & AFTER

The wall you can see in the “before” shot above

really blocked a lot of light in the space!

In the formal living room, Pulp opened up the

partition wall that separated the family room and

kitchen from the living room, creating more space

and flow within the interiors.

after

44

45

BEFORE & AFTER

One of the biggest transformations was in the kitchen. The original room was had drabcolored

cabinets and walls. Pulp’s renovation included new cabinetry in a warm wood

that reflected an updated organic style for this modern house in the trees.

46

after

47

BEFORE & AFTER

Changing the ceiling was a huge part of this new look. Before,

the ceiling seemed heavy and weighed down the look of the

room. Adding all of that stunning warm wood seemed to bring

in the outdoors in a sophisticated style.

after

48

49

BEFORE & AFTER

In any project, Pulp pays attention to every

single detail. In the photo to the right, you can

see how we templated the pattern for the stone

slabs, ensuring that the striations will match

perfectly in the kitchen and bathrooms!

after

The dull white cabinetry that ran

along one wall was transformed

into storage that not only works

perfectly, but also looks like a

work of art.

50

after

51

BEFORE & AFTER

Pulp’s renovation allows the light to shine in, creating chic

and modern spaces that are livable and stunning!

after

52

53

BEFORE & AFTER

after

Our clients have busy lives, so too often they

put themselves (or their personal rooms!) on

the back burner. Pulp made the bedroom the

primary focus for these clients, giving them a

serene oasis that is far from an afterthought!

54

55

BEFORE & AFTER

Even in the guest bedroom, Pulp wanted to have that stunning wow

factor. So the warm wood ceiling was extended into this space, and it

pairs perfectly with the gorgeous wall covering we used for the focal wall.

the

Future of

COLOR

Every year paint companies and forecasters reveal their selections for the color trend

they predict will be tops in the coming months. For 2025, the colors are definitely

entering a cozy and moody period, with complex hues that are both eye-catching and

vibrant. Which of these colors would you love to have in your home next year?

Benjamin Moore: Narragansett Green

Blue led the way for 2024 color trends, and Valspar believes that color is definitely not going

anywhere. According to the company, this new selection for 2025 has an “Old World feel

while being simultaneously modern and playful.” Pulp loves a wide range of blues, and we used

a very close copy of Encore in this Laredo playroom.

Pantone: Mocha Mousse

Pantone predicts this warm light brown will be very popular in 2025, mostly due to its cozy

nature. It also is a color that takes an organic turn, highlighting the natural world. Pulp used

this color in its Dallas project, warming up the dining space with a grounding color.

58

59

COLOR TRENDS

Stainmaster:

Truffle

Deep chocolate browns are continuing

that earthy trend for 2025. Stainmaster

sees a need for coziness and nostalgia

in the coming year, so that’s why it

chose this dark truffle hue. Pulp loves

to envelop a room in a moody color, but

sometimes using that tone to highlight

a feature is the best approach. We

wrapped this inglenook fireplace in a

Seattle project with a lovely chocolate

color that works perfectly with the

wallpaper and bright white room.

Sherwin-Williams: Fabulous Grape

Behr isn’t the only paint company to select a raspberry-leaning red for its 2025 color

trend. Several companies are highlighting complex reds for the new year, with pink

and grey undertones. Pulp used this juicy and chic color to paint the ceiling of a

Dallas dining room. The result is both cozy and daring!

60

61

COLOR TRENDS

Sherwin-Williams: Inspired Lilac

Purple is on a lot of lists for 2025! Glidden has selected Purple Basil and

Benjamin Moore tapped Cinnamon Slate as its color of the year. So look for

various shades of purples to come forward, like this gorgeous range that

Pulp used in a Dallas girl’s bedroom.

Sherwin-Williams: A Capsule

White never ever goes out of style. For 2025, Sherwin-Williams is celebrating 15

years of guiding color trends by selecting a capsule of 9 top colors. Two of those

colors are whites because the company knows that shade is a perennial favorite.

What else is included in the paint companies list? Of course it’s purples and

brown hues, highlighting the importance of earth tones.

6 tips for

KITCHEN MAKEOVERS

Nothing makes a home feel brand new more than a fabulous kitchen redesign. It’s the heart of the

home and where everyone wants to gather. At the top of most renovation lists, this room needs both a

stunning look and amazing functionality. Here are Pulp’s top tips for creating the perfect kitchen.

1 Type Cast

We always start a kitchen renovation by asking our clients what type of cook

they are. If they love to bake, then we’re going to deliver specialty storage,

cabinets made for their baking pans, and a fabulous range. If they like to order

in more often, then their kitchen design might focus more on microwave

drawers and easy-access refrigerators. And serious entertainers will want

wine storage and double dishwashers. Knowing how you plan to use this room

should always be the focus for how it is designed!

2

Island Time

No matter how you use the kitchen, Pulp believes an island or peninsula is

a must-have! It creates seating for guests when you’re preparing a meal, a

space for homework and crafts, or a second dining area for your family. This

one detail creates that hub that’s so important for this “heart of the home.”

64

65

KITCHEN RENOVATIONS

3

Light Up

The Pulp team always reviews

a lighting plan for every kitchen

we design. There should be a

layered design here, with bright

overhead lights, task lighting, a

fixture over the sink or stove,

and maybe even under-cabinet

lighting. That plan can literally

determine whether or not you

love your finished kitchen!

5 Store More

No one has ever regretted

including a lot of storage in

their new kitchen! Plan the

cabinetry wisely and use

every available square inch.

You can store flat pans at

floor level in the “toe kick”

molding. You can include

specialty storage for spices,

utensils, baking necessities,

and more. And you should

definitely think about where

and how you want to store

small appliances.

4

Be Bold

Take a risk in your kitchen

design! It shouldn’t all

be about functionality -

you’re going to spend a

LOT of time in this space,

so be sure that it is fashionable,

too. There are

no rules for which colors

should be included in

kitchen designs, so think

out of the box!

6

Invest Wisely

When it comes to where to invest in a kitchen,

the sky really is the limit! If you want to target

your investment, this is the time to think about

how you will use the kitchen. Our clients who

cook will always go for the top-of-the-line

range, for example. So what is most important

to you?

66

CURB APPEAL

Curb Appeal

Some homes just make you stop in your tracks. But what separates a ho-hum-house from

one with major curb appeal? Pulp loves to work with contractors and architects to create

stunning homes and to update those that need a little more chic style!

For this updated Tudor home in

Seattle, a little paint goes a LONG

way to creating a fresh take. The dark

windows and eaves are complemented

by an apple green front door.

We love working with top-notch landscape architects

on our projects. It’s always key for Pulp to include

gorgeous outdoor sculptures and planters for visual

interest, like in the gardens of this Seattle treehouse.

For this modern Dallas farmhouse, we created

a more functional and entertaining front yard

by creating a custom swing and a firepit.

To modernize and update the exterior of this Laredo home, Pulp created an entire front wall,

brought in oversized planters, and crafted custom doors to create a grand private entry.

For this Seattle lakeside home, the

architects created a beautiful modern

style that pulled the outdoors inside.

Pulp defined the spaces with furnishings

that balanced that look without getting

in the way of the gorgeous view!

70

71

Style Focus:

KNOCK KNOCK

An important part of any home’s curb appeal is the front door! It needs to be as beautiful inside

as it is outside, after all first impressions are everything. Here are some of Pulp’s favorite door

designs from projects across the country.

Pulp’s philosophy is that nothing says bold better than a strong color!

Don’t be shy when it comes to your front door. This is a great place

to use a dramatic color, just be sure it complements the exterior

materials of the home. For this Lake McQueeney midcentury-modern

project, the citrus orange was perfect for both the style of the home

and the stone walls.

There are so many fabulous door designs,

so think out of the box when it comes to

which one you select. Pivoting doors are

having a moment, and this one was a great

counterpoint for the super-modern design

of the Seattle home.

This Dallas home has a distinctly European style, so Pulp

used a lovely French blue on the front door to set the tone

for what guests will see inside.

While it’s great to have the natural light flooding into your

home, our clients often want their privacy, too. The frosted

glass on the door of this Seattle home gives them the best of

both worlds.

The very best front door

makes an impact outside and

inside! In this Dallas home,

Pulp highlighted the bold black

lacquer door with a superpatterned

wall covering. It

makes a grand entrance for this

stunning space.

72

73

Fired up

Color and pattern make a distinctive design for this Dallas-area

sitting room! We love when our clients are ready to embrace color,

and this room definitely makes an impact.

It’s definitely the season for warm fires on cold nights! Pulp Design Studios

designs rooms holistically, and that includes functional features like fireplaces.

Whether it’s creating a new surround, specifying a unique fireplace design, or

updating an older look, we love to bring the heat!

We love the look of marble, but that doesn’t mean it has to always

showcase a traditional style. In the Seattle home below, we

fashioned a more modern take on the surround.

In the modern Dallas living room above, a cantilevered mantel becomes a

work of art, with the warm wood highlighting the style of the home.

74

Visually stunning style is created with a herringbone

design of stone tiles on the floor-to-ceiling fireplace

surround on the right. For this Seattle home, it not only

warms the room, but it also adds a sense of drama.

For this modern Seattle lakefront home, we used a dimensional design for the surround

with a subtle color palette that highlights the stonework inside the fireplace.

We wrapped this Dallas study in a moody hue, so we used a

fireplace surround that made a bold statement, too. The veining

on the surround adds a gorgeous visual interest.

“I’m under a serious deadline to refresh

a room. What’s the quickest way to a new

look that will have the biggest impact?”

Anne Shelor

Nothing makes a bigger (and quicker) impact than paint! And that doesn’t mean you have to

make a split decision on a color that you may regret later. In the Dallas home we designed

below, we took a former Tuscan-style home and modernized it with a bright white paint. It

made a huge and immediate difference in how the room looked! Then we added black to the

cabinetry in the bar area and suddenly a dated room is transformed into a chic and fabulous

space. Start with new paint and you’ll be surprised at how quickly your interiors look new again.

THE

LAST

WORD!

Hey, Beth &

Carolina:

What was one

of your

favorite new

build homes?

MODERN FARMHOUSE

“This was an exciting project for us

because it was the very first ‘real’ home

for our clients! They had lived in New York

apartments before they moved to Dallas

and they wanted to finally have their

they wanted - and more!” — Carolina

SEATTLE GLASSHOUSE

“For this beautiful house in Seattle, we

worked closely with the clients, the
