STYLE MAGAZINE-MARCH 2025
Rainy days during childhood meant board games, puddle-jumping, and—best of all—pancakes for dinner. Yep, you read that right. When stormy skies rolled in, my mom would pull out the griddle and make mounds of fluffy flapjacks (with generous pats of butter and swirls of maple syrup, of course), alongside crispy bacon and fresh fruit. It was the only time vegetables weren’t on the dinner menu (after all, pancakes and peas aren’t the most palatable pairing)—and I enjoyed every bite. These days, the “breakfast for dinner” tradition continues with my daughters, who know that wet weather likely means waffles are on the way. Luckily, they love the ritual as much as me—and how could they not? Whether sweet, savory, simple, or extravagant, breakfast food is a consistent crowd-pleaser, a meal that should be enjoyed morning, noon, and night. In this month’s feature story, we highlight 25 of the best breakfasts found ’round town, from eggcellent benedicts and fresh-baked bagels to buttery pastries, haute hotcakes, and more. “Flip” to page 56 and dig in!

IF WE CAN HELP KIDS GROW HEALTHY,
LET’S GROW HEALTHIER FOOD.
Believe in Better.
Better health takes more than health care.
Research shows that factors outside of the care we
receive, including access to fresh food and community
support systems, account for 80% of our health. It’s
why we invest in farm-to-fork initiatives, creating 6,500
healthy, locally sourced meals for our hospital patients,
employees, and visitors each day. We also support the
River City Food Bank’s Arden location, allowing them
to serve an average of 1,100 households every week.

As gray skies turn blue and hillsides burst into bloom, I can’t help but feel
blissful. Spring’s on the horizon, which means brighter, lighter days and more
time for my favorite spring things: walking (turn to

“Explore Amador” on page 16, we share 10 must-dos in
this picturesque place that’s home to a castle, caverns,
and one of the state’s first wine trails).
Hungry for more? Our Eat & Drink section is teeming
with tasty discoveries to curb every craving, from steak
(page 84) and sushi (page 86) to taters of all types (page
88). We also have a fun Q&A with the region’s top chefs
(page 92), where you might just learn a thing or three (like how the Sacramento
Valley produces 97% of California’s rice and ranks as the second-largest ricegrowing
region in the U.S.). Finally, in “Taste of the Town” (page 73), we introduce
you to some of the restaurants and food-focused businesses that make our area
such a delicious destination.
By the time you reach “the end” on page 98, my hope is that you’re not only
ready to eat but also ready for the joys of spring; or, at the very least, ready to
make breakfast for dinner. Cheers!

Staff
Spotlight
Caitlin Emmett
HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN WITH STYLE?
I started freelancing for STYLE in November 2021; I’ve
been associate editor since July 2024
WHAT DOES YOUR JOB ENTAIL?
Ensuring factual information is correct and the
copy is error-free, brainstorming creative content
ideas for each issue, reaching out to people and
businesses we’ll be writing about to collect photos
and information, and compiling the monthly
Calendar, Ask the Expert, and Foodie Find sidebar
sections—I’m probably forgetting something, too!
BEST/FAVORITE PART OF THE JOB?
I love finding hidden gems/small businesses/people that
are excited about being included in the magazine while
simultaneously giving our community the opportunity
to discover something new. It’s a win-win.
WHAT DO YOU ENJOY DOING
OUTSIDE OF WORK?
Wine tasting (Sonoma State grad, here), going on
walks, baking/cooking, spending time with friends
and family, taking mini trips, and rooting for the
49ers. I also love fashion.
TELL US ABOUT YOUR FAMILY—
ANY KIDS OR PETS?
I’m married to my husband, Carter, and we have a
weenie dog named Lyza. She gets recognized on our
walks before me.
WHAT’S ONE INTERESTING FACT
ABOUT YOU?
I was an agency-signed model for about eight years.
Among other things, it gave me a different perspective
of the editorial realm.
WHAT’S THE NEXT PLACE ON YOUR
TRAVEL BUCKET LIST?
I’m looking forward to an Arizona trip in April, but big
picture, I’d love to go to Scotland someday!
ARE YOU CURRENTLY BINGE-WATCHING
ANY SHOWS?
Reality TV is my guilty pleasure, but Bob’s Burgers
is my comfort show; the puns and plays on words
are unmatched.
IF YOU HAD TO EAT ONE MEAL EVERY
DAY FOR THE REST OF YOUR LIFE, WHAT
WOULD IT BE?
Probably a cheesy, juicy burger—is that also why I like
the aforementioned show?
WHAT’S ONE ITEM YOU CAN’T LIVE
WITHOUT?
My blue-light blocking glasses!

SNACK
SMARTER
Let’s be real: Snacks often steal the show (and
the fun!) when it comes to mealtime, especially
for kids. But it’s all too easy to reach for
something highly processed and packed with
empty calories. In celebration of National
Snack Day on March 4, we rounded up a list
of kid-friendly, parent-approved snacks
that are both nutritious and delicious. Head
online to dig in!

Sip, snack, and relax at Rosie’s (drinkrosies.com), an intimate, inviting restaurant
at 2966 State Route 49, Suite B, in Cool. In addition to rare, handpicked wines,
craft drafts, and small plates (charcuterie, salads, sandwiches, roasted
veggies, etc.), they also offer a quarterly wine club and bi-monthly
beer club. Thanks to their sister shop, Lokl General Store
(loklgeneralstore.com), they work closely with
area farmers to ensure the thoughtfully
curated menu features fresh,
seasonal ingredients.
Bay Area burger chain Super Duper

brick and mortar this spring at 1119
Galleria Boulevard in Roseville. Expect
soft serve and milkshakes made using
organic Straus Family Creamery dairy
and burgers crafted with sustainably

baked buns, and homemade pickles. The
roughly 5,000-square-foot location will
be Super Duper’s largest one to date.
The Crepe Stop (thecrepestop.com)—a
destination for sweet and savory crepes,
as well as gelato, acai bowls, mini
pancakes, waffle pops, boba, smoothies,
milkshakes, and more—opened at 1485
Eureka Road, Suite 160, in Roseville’s
Stone Point Retail Plaza. The familyowned
and operated eatery has an
existing location in San Carlos.
Indoor amusement chain Fun City
Adventure Park (@funcityadventurepark)
is opening its first Sacramento-area
site—a 34,876-square-foot space
at 2868 Zinfandel Drive in Rancho
Cordova. The community can look
forward to attractions such as trampoline
courts, playgrounds, ninja courses,
foam pits, rock climbing, bumper
ball, arcades, and ropes courses.
Expect both Indian-style pizzas (chicken tikka,
chili paneer, and tandoori) plus traditional
Italian pies (Hawaiian, garlic chicken, and
combination), in addition to wings, “sticks,”
desserts, and beverages like mango lassi
and rose milk—all crafted using premium
ingredients—at Desi Pizza Bite (desipizzabite.

Placerville, the approximately 4,000-squarefoot
outpost is scheduled to open this month.

Explore A mador
by JENNIFER MARAGONI
Think you have to travel to
Napa Valley for a day of wine
tasting or to Europe to tour a
real castle? Think again. You
can experience both—and
so much more—in nearby
Amador County.
Nestled in the foothills and
steeped in Gold Rush history,
Amador County boasts
myriad museums and historic
landmarks, spectacular
caverns, a Romanesque
Revival-style castle, and one
of the state’s first wine trails.
Antique enthusiasts can hunt
for treasures along its historic
main streets, while history
buffs can geek out over real
treasure at one of the state’s
deepest gold mines.
“The genuine welcoming
environment, with boutique
shops and restaurants,
coupled with the awardwinning
wine, rich history, and
unique experiences, make
it a destination for families,
foodies, wine lovers, and
outdoor enthusiasts,” says
Nicole Shebl, public relations
and marketing manager for the
Amador Council of Tourism.

SWEET INDULGENCE
Start your day with coffee and a
morning bun or grab an artisan
sandwich at Blue Door Bakery
(@bluedoorbakeryjackson).
Since opening in 2017, the
Serbian-owned bakeshop has
become a local favorite known
for its friendly service and
European-style delicacies,
including mouthwatering
pastries, focaccia, country
sourdough bread (naturally
leavened and made with only
Knight Foundry
three ingredients: water,
flour, salt), and balsamic
dip. The bakery is open
Tuesday-Saturday
from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. but
arrive early for the best
selection.
SIP & SAVOR
With more than 50
boutique and family-run
wineries, and vineyards
dating back to the mid-
1800s, Amador County
is no newcomer to the
wine world. Spend a
day sampling robust
reds and crisp whites
while soaking in the
breathtaking vineyard
views. At Deaver
Vineyards in Plymouth,
you can even sip reds
crafted from vines
planted by the owner’s
great-grandfather
in 1854. Wondering
which other wineries
to visit? The Amador
Vintners Association
(amadorwine.com) is a
perfect place to start.
FORGE HISTORY
Established in 1873,
Sutter Creek’s Knight
Foundry (knightfoundry.
com) is America's last
water-powered foundry
and machine shop.
These days, it’s been
transformed into a
unique regional heritage
site, where traditional
industrial techniques
are demonstrated and
taught. Step back in time
to explore the Foundry
on the second and fourth
Saturday of every month
or arrange a private
guided tour.

STRIKE GOLD
California’s Gold Rush history is best
explored at Kennedy Gold Mine
(kennedygoldmine.com) in Jackson, one of
California’s deepest gold mines at 5,912
feet. Take a tour to learn about the mine’s
history, see its massive head frame and
shaft, and experience a simulated mine
tunnel. And don’t forget to check out the
safe where gold bars were once stored!

HAUNTED HISTORY
History looms large at Preston Castle
(prestoncastle.org) in Ione. Built in the
1890s as a reform school for boys, the
imposing 50,000-square-foot stone
castle is now a historic landmark offering
guided tours and ghost hunts. (Yes, ghost
hunts!) The castle has even been featured
in horror films and paranormal shows.
Explore its grand halls and grounds and
you’ll feel like you’re in a Scooby-Doo
mystery—minus the meddling kids.
NATURAL WONDERS
For an awe-inspiring underground
adventure, visit Black Chasm Cavern
(cavetouring.com) in Volcano. This
vertical cave dazzles with crystal
formations—including stripy “cave
bacon” and rare twisty helictites—and
a beautiful blue lake. Guided tours take
visitors through the caverns, offering
a glimpse of the geological wonders
hidden beneath the earth’s surface.
NATIVE HERITAGE
Long before gold prospectors flocked
to Amador County, the Miwok tribe
inhabited the region. Immerse yourself

— Day in the Life —
Ray Johnston
by CAROLINE KINGS
Ray Johnston is the founder of Bayside
Church (baysideonline.com), but the
path to ministry was hardly part
of his teenage plan. Back then, the idea of
becoming a pastor—or even getting deeply
involved in religion—was the furthest thing
from his mind. Today, Johnston wears many
hats: devoted family man, published author,
respected business leader, and, of course,
passionate church founder.
Tell us about your story.
I grew up in Southern California and was an
atheist. Not a good statement for a pastor! My
dad was a successful businessman and into
politics, my parents divorced, and then—just
before college—a basketball buddy invited me
to go to church with him. Eventually I went
and my previous ideas about [religion] were
blown apart; the people were sharper and
cooler than I imagined. But what stumped
me was how such sharp people could believe
the Bible. I started studying Christianity and
after eight months of reading and dissecting
the evidence (particularly around the
resurrection), it was hard to remain an atheist.
Once you discovered Christianity, was
becoming a pastor on the agenda?
No, not at all. I didn’t even consider it. My wife,
Carol, and our first child moved to Chicago
where I was a professor of history in two
different grad schools.
So, how did Bayside begin?
Carol and I had three of our four children
and were still living in Chicago but knew
we wanted to return to California to be near
grandparents. We moved to Folsom, and I’d just
written a book, Developing Student Leaders; it
was doing well and allowed me to take some
time off. We started a Bible study group in our
living room, and it blew up.
Around that time, two teens committed
“copycat” suicides in Granite Bay and people
asked us to start a church there. If teens were
committing suicide, I could see that there was
a need. I said I would start one, so long as it
was for people who didn’t like church. And
that was how it all began.
Currently, we have churches locally in
Folsom, Roseville, Auburn, and Sacramento.
Most recently, Folsom State Prison asked us to
establish a church there, which we’ve done.

FAVORITE PASSAGE FROM THE
BIBLE: “And He who was seated
on the throne said, 'Behold I am
making all things new.' He also
said, 'Write this down, for these
words are trustworthy and

How does your varied life experience
help in your role as a pastor?
My dad gave me a solid business
background, and I was around great
leaders; combined with [my knowledge
of] history, it lends itself well to what I do
now. I also really understand how people
who don’t like the church think and how
businesspeople think. We host a business
leader roundtable, [often attended by
around] 550 incredible communicators
and leaders. We’re bringing together
church and business, helping leaders lead.
Tell us about a typical day.
Well, every day begins with me reading a
devotion, which I take with me and think
about all day. I have three days that are
the same each week: Sunday (we have 30
different services across our churches),
Tuesday (I have leadership meetings with
my strategic team, which are a blast),
and Wednesday (Bayside employs 300
people and we all come together for
a service of worship, encouragement,
and celebrating). My goal is to build
people up and our ethos is for our staff
to live better, love better, and lead better
because of working within the Bayside
community. On other days, I enjoy
spending time with my family, especially
my four grandchildren.
How does Bayside reach beyond
the church?
We all have two levels: a support level and
a challenge level. The gap between the two
is destructive stress, and it’s that stress that
can lead us to addiction, depression, and
relationship breakdowns. When people
come to a Bayside church, they give us 60-
70 minutes of their time and in that time,
we [help] raise their level of support. That’s
what we’re there to do. For teens, parents,
and leaders; and whether it’s educational,
relational, or spiritual, we’re their number
one support mechanism to help them reach
that challenge level.
But we’re not limited to the four walls of
the church; we can help reduce the stress
gap in communities, too. There are real
differences between schools in [various
areas] and the first time I saw that for myself,
I wanted to do something about it.
During COVID, we heard that 300
children were excluded from school
because of a lack of computers and
Wi-Fi at home. We brought [our Bayside
community] together on Zoom and
raised $250,000 in 13 minutes! Those kids
[were given] Chromebooks and two years’
prepaid Wi-Fi so they could continue
their education during the pandemic.
As well as having two youth pastors at
each church, we take our teen and young
adult parishioners to Mexico every year.
Children need [positive] role models and
parents can [help], but experiences are also
imperative. They volunteer in the villages,
they lead, and some of them go into the
prisons; they’re stretched.

Spotlight on
Claudia Savage
by JENNIFER MARAGONI
Claudia Savage’s training as a landscape
architect greatly influences how she
sees the world and approaches painting.
Many of the principles of landscape
design, such as composition, balance,
movement, and texture, overlap with art,
she says.
“At school we were constantly problemsolving
and using drawing to communicate
ideas. I was especially interested in color
theory and playing with color to evoke
emotions, challenge perspective, and move
a person through a space,” she says. “When
I observe a painting subject now, I both
consciously and subconsciously problemsolve
and apply design principles and
color theory.”
Based in Loomis, Savage owns her own
landscape architecture company and sells
her paintings at local markets, art shows,
and by appointment. View her work and
learn more at claudiasavageart.com.
How did you get your start as an artist?
I have loved sketching and painting as far
back as I can remember. Whenever I gave
artwork to my grandmother, she always
insisted that I sign it, because ‘that is what
artists do,’ and she framed and displayed
them all. Growing up in Davis when Wayne
Thiebaud, Robert Arneson, and Roy De
Forest were in their heyday teaching at
UC Davis, great art and inspiration were
everywhere. Thiebaud’s landscapes and
[paintings of] cakes were favorites of mine,
and his use of color still inspires me.
You studied landscape architecture at
Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. How did that
training influence your art?
In the program, I was able to continue
developing my creativity and love of
design. I had the opportunity to visit New
York City’s Central Park in January, under a
blanket of snow. It was beautiful, and I felt
a need to walk through the park in spring,
summer, and fall to see how it changed
with the seasons. I found myself imagining
the park in all its potential states: how
it would feel on an overcast day or a
bright morning, in the middle of winter,
or at the start of spring—thinking about
how elements would shift in different
conditions, how colors would fade or
intensify, how patterns would change,
and how those transformations evoke
different feelings. That experience greatly
influenced how I see my surroundings
and how I paint today.
You work in both watercolor and oil. What
appeals to you about these mediums?
Watercolor was my first medium. I love
its luminescent quality and how easily it
glides across the paper. The possibilities
are infinite, capturing movement and

variations in tone. There is something
captivating about dropping a loaded brush
into clear water and watching the pigment
spread and minerals separate to create
beautiful granulating effects.
Inspired by Thiebaud, I was drawn to
oil painting, but I did not work often with
it for many years, as the odor and long
drying time were not ideal when painting
on the dining room table with young
children around. I became passionate
about plein air (outdoor) painting last year,
which eliminated those constraints and
has allowed me to work more with oils.
What I especially enjoy is the sculptural
quality that can be achieved using
brushstrokes and how the texture catches
the light and reflective color around it.
Where do you find your inspiration?
In the iconic picturesque landscapes of
California and the Pacific Northwest, as
well as in the local colors and patterns
in day-to-day life, from the coastline of
Point Lobos State Natural Reserve to the
chickens that roam my garden. I want my
art to show that there is beauty all around
us if we take the time to slow down and
observe the unique qualities of our
surroundings.
Your contoured watercolor paintings
are especially unique. Please describe
your process.
When I approach a new watercolor
landscape painting, the first thing I look
for is movement—how the rocks rise from
the ground, how the trees are twisted from
the wind, the speed at which clouds move
across the sky, how the water swirls in the
ocean. I then visualize how to simplify it
and apply masking fluid along those lines of
movement. I think of this process as creating
contours, as they remind me of modeling
3D landforms while at school. I’m drawn to
the structure the masking fluid gives the
painting; it forms a contrast to the oftentimes
loose flow of watercolor. Once the fluid has
dried, it repels water, and I begin adding
color. When the paint is dry, I remove the
masking fluid with a rubber eraser. I love
this step; it only takes a few minutes, but it
transforms the painting when the brightness
of the paper reemerges.
What do you hope viewers experience
through your art?
I would like viewers to get lost in my
paintings. I hope they’re transported to a
memory that brings them joy or meaning
or to a place that provides peace and
calms their mind.

by CAROLINE KINGS
THE POWER OF WALKING
I walk my dog regularly and
although the strolls give me
purpose, I’ve realized how
much I enjoy walking, too. And
seemingly, so do many of you,
as on my daily walks around
town I see the same faces,
day in and out, with dogs and
without; we nod and smile and
carry on moving.
To the runners and gymgoers,
open-water swimmers, and
Lycra-clad cyclists, it may seem
as though we’re not doing much
exercise, but that’s where you’re
wrong: walking is so good for
everyone, all ages and abilities.
“This low-impact, accessible
activity offers a range of benefits
for both body and mind,” asserts
Lisa Robinson, general manager
at Roseville Health & Wellness
Center (rosevillehwc.com).
“Regular walking can improve
cardiovascular health, boost
mood, and increase energy levels.”
The health benefits
of walking should not be
underestimated. “Walking is
a cornerstone of a healthy
lifestyle,” Shideh Chinichian,
MD, family medicine
practitioner at Dignity Health
(@drtrendymd), tells me.
“Regular walking reduces the
risk of chronic conditions
like heart disease, stroke, and

type 2 diabetes. It supports weight
management, strengthens bones and
muscles, and even boosts longevity.”
Jessica Dillon, MSN, RN, NP-BC,
at Marshall (marshallmedical.org),
is passionate about how walking
contributes to bone health. “Women
are at a greater risk of developing
osteoporosis, osteopenia, and
associated fractures; and weightbearing
exercises, such as walking,
positively impact bone health in
several ways. Dillon goes on to say that
by helping to improve strength and
balance, walking can reduce your risk
of falls, injuries, and fractures.
As well as physical benefits, walking
is great for the mind, too, as Ashlee
Janzen, MS, LMFT (ashleejanzenlmft.
com), describes. “I recommend walking
for anyone looking to decrease stress
or anxiety. [It] stimulates the right
and left brain, creating a rhythm that
causes bilateral stimulation [and]
helps in processing emotions, trauma,
anxiety, and stress.” Dr. Chinichian adds:
“Mentally, walking can be a time to
decompress and practice mindfulness.
Observing your surroundings,
reflecting on gratitude, or listening to
a calming podcast can turn your walk
into an enriching experience.”
Many of us walk every day in some
capacity, so what’s different about it
as exercise and what should we be
aiming for? All the experts I spoke with
talked about walking intentionally—
with a focus on step count or distance
and pace, meaning your heart rate.
“Someone who walks less than 5,000
steps a day is considered to live a
sedentary lifestyle. We want you to be
living an active lifestyle!” Dillon says,
acknowledging, though, that “a little bit
is always better than none.”
Erin Johnston, fitness director
at Broadstone Sports Club
(sparetimesportsclubs.com/clubs/
broadstone) and adjunct professor at
Folsom Lake College in kinesiology,
health, and athletics, advises, “Studies
have shown that brisk walking is more
beneficial than a stroll, but all walking
has benefits. You really want to aim for
10,000 steps and elevate your heart rate
to receive the cardiovascular benefits.” If
that feels like a lot, try taking the stairs,
parking further away, or incorporating a
lunchtime walk into your day.
You can maximize the physical
benefits of walking by wearing a
weighted vest, a backpack with
weighted items inside, or carrying
small dumbbells. “A weighted vest
boosts calorie burn and strengthens
your core, shoulders, and lower body,
as well as [making] your muscles work
harder. Start with 5%-10% of your body
weight to avoid overloading your
body,” Dillon explains.
When we think of intentional
walking, we think of walking outside
or hiking in nature, which brings
with it added benefits. “Exposure to
natural sunlight helps with vitamin D
synthesis, [which] is known to reduce
inflammation, improve immune
function and glucose metabolism, as
well as promote normal bone density,”
Dillon says. Dr. Chinichian adds,
“Being in green spaces reduces stress
hormones like cortisol and increases
endorphins. Walking on uneven terrain
also engages stabilizing muscles,
improving balance and coordination.”
Varying surfaces and being in
fresh air may be positive for some
but problematic for others. Johnston
suggests using walking poles to help
with confidence; for those who find
hard surfaces to be uncomfortable,
she recommends finding trails or
soft surfaces. Robinson also offers a
treadmill as an alternative. “Walking
on a treadmill provides a consistent,
controlled environment where you
can stay active, avoiding outdoor
elements, making it both safe and
convenient.” A step on a treadmill is
“worth” the same as a step outside,
physically; plus, you can change the
incline, speed, and even what you’re
watching as you walk!
Curious why 10,000 is the magic
number? Johnston informs me that it
was a Japanese pedometer maker who
designated it in the ’60s. Since then,
most research has been performed on
10,000 steps, which equates to about
four or five miles, as it’s an achievable
number throughout a day for the
average person. But she is keen to
emphasise that a leisurely walk has its
benefits, too, delivering an endorphin
rush and elevating your mood. “Just
make sure you stay hydrated! You
might not be sweating, but you still
need water.”

Take a Hike
Springhill, Lafayette Ridge, Briones Crest, & Sunrise Loop
by RYAN MARTINEZ
LOCATION:
Lafayette.
DISTANCE:
4.2-mile loop.
DIFFICULTY LEVEL:
Moderate.
KNOW BEFORE YOU GO:
There’s a $5 parking fee at
the trailhead. Be prepared
to share the path with hikers
and leashed dogs alike. With
over 1,000 feet of elevation
gain, you can expect to break
a sweat, especially on warmer
days. For a quieter experience,
try to get an early start—this
is especially important if
hot temperatures are in the
forecast. Be sure to pack
plenty of water, wear shoes
with good traction, and, as
always, follow Leave No Trace
principles.
WHY WE LOVE IT:
This loop offers stunning
views of Mt. Diablo, shaded
resting spots, and—come
spring—a spectacular display
of wildflowers. The elevation
gain makes for a rewarding
challenge, and the sense of
accomplishment at the end is
hard to beat.
FUEL UP:
When you want
to indulge in
“California
comfort
cuisine,” look
no further
than The
Hideout Kitchen
(hideoutkitchen.
com). With tasty
staples like
country fried
steak and eggs
benedict, plus
waffle sandos
and lamb chops,
this casual but
chic spot is a
solid way to start or end a day
out on the trail.

SUPER
BLOOMS
California, as we all
know, is a biodiversity
hotspot with a
uniquely diverse
landscape, incredible
array of plant life, and
blooms so impressive
they can occasionally
be seen from space.
And though
“superblooms” don’t
happen often, when
they do, they’re
nothing short of
spectacular. The
timing of them,
and the seasonality
of wildflowers in
general, is closely
tied to our state’s
distinct climate. The
intense heat and
long dry spells we
experience create
an environment
where it’s most
advantageous for
plants to flower in the
spring—just before
they go to seed and
endure the scorching
summer months.
Take a moment
to appreciate the
colorful display of
wildflowers you’ll
encounter along this
particular trail: notice
their vibrant colors,
varied textures,
delicate scents, and
the unique habitats
they thrive in. Bonus
points if you capture
their beauty and tag

Dentistry is Dr. Boyechko’s passion. This
passion drives her to change people’s lives by
improving their smiles. Her passion began in
the Soviet Ukraine as a dental student. She
was not able to graduate from Soviet dental
school due to her Christian beliefs. Not one
to give up, she pursued her dream after she
arrived in the United States as a refugee.
With only self-taught English, she worked as
a dental technician, graduated from Portland
State University with Bachelor of Arts and
received her DMD diploma from Oregon
Health Science University School of Dentistry.
In addition to practicing dentistry in her
private offices in Oregon and California,
she was also teaching in OHSU and UCLA
dental schools. This allowed her to share
her knowledge, experience, and passion with
dental students.
Dr. Boyechko now enjoys her thriving practice

her expertise.
In her practice, she utilizes the most advanced

Put a
Ring on It
When it comes to engagement rings,
we’re seeing a rise in boulder-style
designs, whose unique textures
and organic, freeform shapes draw
inspiration from the natural world.
Marquise cuts are also making
a serious comeback. With their
elongated, unique shape, they not
only create a flattering silhouette
but also have a magical ability to
make the center stone appear larger.
A perfect choice for modern brides
seeking something bold yet timeless
or those who want to stand out, I
also love how marquise cuts combine
sophistication with individuality,
offering a fresh take on classic
elegance. Whether set in yellow gold
for a warm, romantic feel or paired
with intricate halo designs, these
types of rings captivate brides in
search of something extraordinary.

Q: HOW DO LIGHT-BASED
TECHNOLOGIES HELP
WITH ACNE?
A: Light therapy is considered
a safe, effective treatment for
acne. It often works best when
combined with other treatments
including topical or oral prescription
medications. Low-level blue and
red light (often in the form of LED
light) are most commonly used.
Blue light disrupts and kills the
primary bacteria involved in acne,
and has anti-inflammatory effects
as well. Red light also reduces
inflammation and can improve
the healing of active acne lesions.
Either type of light can be effective;
sometimes, they’re used together.
Dermatologists also perform a
treatment called photodynamic
therapy (PDT), which involves the
application of a topical medication
prior to the light treatments,
making them even more effective.
At home, light treatment devices for
acne are available. They typically
are less intense, but can provide
benefits for mild to moderate acne,
especially when combined with a
customized regimen prescribed by
a dermatologist.

Green Thumbs Up
Top Gardening Tips by KOURTNEY JASON
Gardening can be a rewarding and therapeutic
hobby, but even seasoned green thumbs make
mistakes that can hinder plant growth and
overall garden health. From overwatering
to incorrect soil prep, small missteps can
lead to big disappointments. To help
you cultivate a thriving garden, we
asked experts from area nurseries for
their top tips.
WATER WISELY
Juliet Voigtlander, owner of El Dorado Nursery
(eldoradonursery.com), says the number one cause
of plant failure is inconsistent watering. “Either too
much or not enough, when the plants need it,” she
says. “A common misconception is not knowing how
your system works. Drip irrigation is meant to be run
for longer times and less days. Drip puts out water
slowly—allowing it to work its way down to the roots.”
Additionally, many people don’t water long
enough to get a good soaking. “A one-gallon dripper
puts out one gallon of water an hour-in perfect
conditions. Most people run the drip for 15 minutes,
so that’s one-fourth gallon of water—not enough to
get the roots moist,” Voigtlander says. “Sprinklers put
out a lot of water quickly; running [them] too long
makes it hard for the water to percolate to the roots,
so you have run off and waste.”
She explains that sprinklers work best with a
short blast of water, then again in a few hours, if
needed. A layer of wood chips or bark will feed the
soil as it breaks down and save water.
Katie Combellack, owner of The Meadow
(growatthemeadow.com), says to avoid shallow,
frequent watering, which leads to weak roots.
Instead, water deeply and less often to encourage
strong root growth.
PREP YOUR SOIL
Voigtlander says it’s typical for people to dig way
too deep and to not amend the soil. “Nursery plants
are grown in perfect soil—native soil is far from
perfect,” she says. “We suggest digging wide (twice
as wide as the container) and shallow (the roots
should just be at ground level or just above). The
native soil you dig up should then get blended with
a soil conditioner—we suggest Fir Mulch (a bagged
product) or an SBC (soil building conditioner) for
heavy clay soils (also bagged).” Doing this creates
a “transition zone” for the plant to root into and
thrive in our native soil. Deep holes create a “sump”
and can be a soggy mess, which hurts new roots.
Voigtlander insists that people don’t use “potting
soil” in the ground, as it’s formulated specifically for

containers. She adds that cheap dirt is
just cheap dirt, and it’s not going to make
your plant happy. “A starter fertilizer will
help the roots grow, too,” she says.
Combellack adds, “Don’t forget
to mulch! It helps retain moisture,
suppress weeds, and regulate soil
temperature.”
SPACE TO GROW
Overcrowding plants reduces
airflow, encourages disease, and
limits growth, Combellack says. She
suggests always following spacing
recommendations. Voigtlander
adds, “Plants start out as babies—
and just like babies, they grow up.
Knowing the mature size of your
plant and allowing for that is the
best plan. Planting too closely can
lead to issues such as fungus, insect
invasions, stress, and failure to thrive.
If you want to fill up the space until
your plants grow, add short-lived
perennials.” Examples include lupines,
hyacinths, coneflowers, delphiniums,
and coral bells.
PICK THE RIGHT PLANTS
It can be easy to buy the wrong plants,
and Combellack reminds gardeners
to not assume all plants sold at garden
centers thrive in the region. “Always
shop your local garden centers,” she says.
At El Dorado Nursery, Voigtlander say
they have local buyers who order what
will do best in the area. “Larger stores
may not have local buyers and therefore
have plants that aren’t zoned for our
area.” She also notes that plant tags (the

general U.S., rather than region-specific.
“We encourage questions; there are no
stupid questions at the nursery. We love
helping out,” she says. It's also important
to know that spring is not the only
planting season,” Combellack says. “Our
mild winters allow for successful fall
and winter gardening, too!”
PEST CONTROL
“Pests are always around,” Voigtlander
says. “Walk around and [observe] your
garden; look for issues before they become
problems. So many pest problems can
be solved with a good jet of water (ants,
aphids, spittle bugs), while some need a
little chemical attack (scale insects, severe
aphids, hornworms). We need to share
our plants with the birds and bugs—a
few nibbles are OK. The chemical world
is changing too, so we’re seeing more
‘natural or organic’ chemicals out there.”
With any product, follow the directions,
she advises. “More is not better—it is just
more. Keeping your plants healthy will
also aid in the control of pests. Pests
attack plants that are stressed—especially
if underwatered or overwatered.”
JUST TRY IT
“Don’t hesitate to try new plants or
methods,” Combellack encourages.
“Gardening is a learning process,
and even experienced gardeners face
challenges. Start small.”
With a little knowledge and attention,
your outdoor space will flourish season
after season.

Best
Forget the gratitude journal. The best way to start your day is
with thoughtful questions like “How do you like your eggs?” and
“White, wheat, whole-wheat, or sourdough?” Especially on weekends,
you deserve more than just rushing through a cup of coffee, settling for
a mediocre protein bar, or clinging to the boredom of a nutritious (but repetitive)
smoothie. Whether it’s bagels, benedicts, pancakes, pastries, sandwiches, classic diner
fare, waffles, or something with an international twist, breakfast—and the experience
surrounding it—should be considered a form of self-care. Fortunately, we hand-picked
25 of the best morning meals that are worth waking up for.
I’ll Stop the World and
Melt with You: Waffles
Golden Waffle Café
Placerville’s Golden Waffle Café is a classic
diner that delivers on their name with a
dizzying lineup of waffles, as well as omelets,
skillets, specialty breakfasts, and lunch. But
it’s the namesake waffles we come for: from
bacon, blackberry, and blueberry, to strawberry
almond, apple raisin, and more, there’s one for
everyone. The fan favorite is the Bacon Pecan
Waffle featuring bacon and pecans cooked
into the batter, topped with more pecans, and
a slice of bacon; because there’s no such thing
as “too much bacon” or “too many pecans.”

Roseville’s Four Sisters Café is all about good
eats, friendly service, and truth in advertising:
It’s owned and run by four actual sisters.
Breakfast-wise, popular favorites range from
their famous Four Sisters omelet to mango
stuffed French toast, but I’m all about tropical
waffles—so take me down to paradise waffle
city, where the grass is green, and the girls are
pretty! What exactly is the Paradise Waffle?
It’s a scratch-made macadamia nut Belgianstyle
waffle topped with fresh bananas and
strawberries, sprinkled with toasted coconut,
and served with fresh whipped cream and hot
maple syrup. Vacation schmacation, just load me
up on paradise waffles, and I’m happy!

El Dorado Hills’ Milestone delivers
exceptional service, a warm and friendly
atmosphere, and a blue-ribbon brunch
menu. At the top of the list is their Fried
Chicken & Malted Waffles. How could
any mere mortal resist the salty-sweet
flavor combo of crispy malted waffles,
topped with tender buttermilk pankobreaded
fried chicken, crushed bacon,
Fuji apples, and hot maple syrup (that’s
been steeped with said bacon and
apples)? If your taste buds don’t stand up
and sing “Oh, What a Beautiful Mornin’”
from Oklahoma, I’ll have questions
for you because for my money, this is
capital-G great. No. All-caps GREAT.
Throw their bottomless mimosa bar into

The 9 Best Ways
to Prevent Cancer
These tips help you stay
healthier, so you’re more likely
to lead a cancer-free life.
With so many types of cancer and
so much advice available on how to
prevent each type, it can all be a bit
confusing. But although the abundance
of cancer prevention information can
be overwhelming – and sometimes
contradictory – there’s one way you can’t go
wrong when it comes to cancer prevention:
follow a healthy lifestyle.
Practicing healthy habits lowers your
risk of most cancers. These same habits
make it less likely you’ll develop heart
disease, diabetes, and other chronic health
conditions. Although there’s no way to
know for sure if these habits are the key
to cancer prevention, you’ll be doing your
body a world of good by embracing a
healthier lifestyle. These tips may not seem
like an evolutionary breakthrough to living
a cancer-free life, but they may help and
certainly won’t hurt your chances of being as
healthy as you can be.
Here are nine healthy lifestyle habits that up
your chances of preventing cancer:
1. Eat healthy foods – If you mostly
follow a healthy eating plan based on
low-fat, low-sodium, and low-carb
guidelines (meaning low in added
sugar and white flour), you’ll be ahead
of the game on all cancer prevention
fronts. Fill your plate with vegetables,
fruits, whole grains, and other plantbased
foods such as beans, nuts, and
seeds. Eat enough lean protein, healthy
fat, and complex carbohydrates. Limit
ultra-processed foods, fried foods,
and foods high in saturated fat, added
sugars, and empty calories.
2. Exercise regularly – Being physically
active is good for your health in
many ways and helps you maintain a
healthier weight. This helps protect you
from various types of cancer as well as
heart disease and other serious health
issues. Aim to get at least 150 minutes
of moderate aerobic activity each week,
along with some strength training
exercises.
3. Limit alcohol consumption –
Although the amount of alcohol you
drink may not affect all types of cancer,
it does raise the risk of some common

COVER STORY
A Journey
of Resilience
It is easy to forget that our
healthcare providers live full
lives and experience their own
challenges outside of the offices
where we see them. It is this lived
experience, however, that builds
their resilience and allows them
to provide elevated care to every
patient. Every time. In fact, it is an
implicit goal of Marshall to ensure
all our care providers have a
healthy work-life balance and rich,
fulfilling lives. The following is Dr.
Samuel Ceridon’s story.
I was asked to be on a Relay
Team in the September 2024
Santa Cruz Ironman 70.3 with
Anna Salvestrin, a medical
assistant at Marshall and
competitive triathlete, and my
nurse practitioner partner, Kristin
Nurre, an avid runner. Their idea
was to compete as a relay team,
but they needed a cyclist. They
asked me because they knew I
was a mountain biker who had
competed in the past. I accepted.
My part of the race would be a 56-
mile road course along the Pacific
Coast Highway.
In my youth, I raced mountain
bikes at a highly competitive
level. After entering medical
school, my health deteriorated
for various reasons. My ability to
ride dwindled. It had been almost
4 | FOR YOUR HEALTH | www.marshallmedical.org
25 years since I had raced successfully.
Furthermore, over the past several years,
I had struggled with leg cramps during
and after rides. They became so severe
that I started pulling out of events.
Needless to say, I was nervous about
competing. However, I had six months to
prepare. I was working with a trainer and
finding some success, and I felt I had the
time I needed.
A month later, things fell apart. I
ruptured my left quadriceps tendon.
I had to undergo surgical repair by
Marshall orthopedic surgeon Dr.
Christopher Kurnik. After surgery, I was
in a full leg splint with instructions to
not bend the knee or even activate the
quad for six weeks. My training plans
were wrecked.
Interestingly enough, this injury actually
helped me focus not only on healing but
also on preparing for the race. Within
the first week after the surgery, I had a
physical therapy appointment scheduled.
The therapist and I formulated a plan
of care, and I started therapy that next
week with my splint on. I still followed
instructions to protect the repair but
worked hard to get everything else
strong. It was a gamble.
Once I was cleared to be out of the
splint, I started riding – initially on a
bicycle trainer – then on a bicycle. The
use of a “smart” trainer (computercontrolled
resistance to simulate realworld
conditions) made the most of
my workouts. We worked on changing
the way I rode. Since testing showed
my left quad was about 72% weaker
than my right, I learned to rely less
on leg strength and more on aerobic
fitness. Even the setup of the bicycle
was completely changed to reduce the
chances of cramping.
I had access to a computer simulation
of Santa Cruz’s bike course, allowing
me to practice on the actual racecourse.
During trial rides, my best time was four
hours and 30 minutes. I was faster than
I hoped. However, that time was just
enough to keep from being disqualified.
With my injury, nothing was
certain except that I couldn’t stop
working for fear of letting down my
teammates, Anna and Kristin.
In addition to the physical, I had to
mentally work through multiple barriers.
Doubt, fear, and uncertainty were
constants during my training. The night
before the race, I was finally able to set
all that aside. I prayed and said, “I’ve
done absolutely everything I can to
prepare for this thing. Time to let it go.”
Race day – exactly five months after my
surgery – I went through my pre-race
ritual and waited in the transition area.
Anna was fast, taking only 42 minutes
to swim the course. She handed off to
me, and out I went. At one point, my
legs started to cramp, which slowed me
down only a little, as I was able to work
through the cramps without stopping.
As I was returning into Santa Cruz, I was
over an hour faster than my previous
pace. I kept thinking, “This is a fluke.
There’s no way I can be this fast.”
I crossed the line at three hours and 30
minutes. Unbelievable.
Kristin finished off our effort, taking just
over two hours to complete her run.
These combined efforts placed us 50th
out of 90 teams. I am very proud of, and
thankful for, our team. I wouldn’t have
been able to accomplish any of this if it
were not for their support. There are so
many people who deserve thanks, and I
hope I have thanked them personally.
Since that day, I’ve been processing it
all. It was more than just a competition
for me. It was a very personal journey,
one that I have been at a loss for words
to share. This ultimately became my
Everest, which I summited. I decided
to share my experience because of my
position in the community as a doctor.
There are those I help who are facing
their own obstacles. They have their
own Everest to climb. By sharing the
fears and doubts I had to overcome,
while learning to have faith, maybe
others can find a way to do it for
themselves as well.

7 Tips to Be More
Active When You
Have Heart Issues
Here’s how to ease into exercise after a
heart attack or if you have heart disease.
If you have a heart issue or have
experienced a heart-related event, such
as a heart attack, you may feel uneasy
about doing too much physical activity.
But very often, being more active is one
of the best things you can do to improve
the health of your heart. The key to doing
it safely is to talk with your doctor about
what you can and cannot do and slowly
ease into any new activity.
There are many benefits to being more
active when you have cardiovascular
health issues. These tips can help you
stay as safe as possible as you increase
activity levels:
1. Talk to your doctor. Before you do any
activity, talk to your doctor or other
members of your healthcare team. Find
out what activities are best for you and
what you should avoid. Ask how much
exercise is enough or too much. Also,
make sure you know what warning
signs to look out for that indicate it’s
time to stop or seek medical attention.
2. Consider a cardiac rehab program.
Doctors often recommend these
programs after a heart attack or
other cardiovascular event. They
help you increase physical activity
under the watchful eyes of trained
specialists who show you what to do
and monitor your progress. They also
suggest other ways to improve your
health and spur your recovery, such
as making heart-healthy recipes or
finding ways to reduce stress.
3. Take it slowly. Ease into activity
slowly. Start by doing low-intensity
activities such as walking. Exercise at
a pace that feels comfortable for you,
and do it only for a short time. As
you feel more comfortable, you can
gradually increase your intensity or
exercise more.
4. Be consistent. You’ll reap more
benefits from exercise and will get used
to increased activity levels quicker if
you’re consistently active. Aim to move
more most days of the week, even if
it’s just for a little while. This is more
effective than doing a lot of activity
on just a couple of days a week. If you
don’t stick with exercise, it doesn’t
help much, so find activities you enjoy
doing.
5. Pay attention to your body. Exercising
when you have heart problems can
be scary, and it’s important to pay
attention to any signs that something
may be wrong. If you experience
fatigue, shortness of breath, dizziness,
or chest pain, stop what you are doing
and let your doctor know.
6. Track your progress. It can be
overwhelming to exercise after having
a heart-related scare. It can also feel
like you’ll never be able to do much. To
overcome these feelings, keep track of
what you do and how you feel when
doing it so you can see your progress.
It’s also helpful to keep track of any
symptoms or setbacks and to share
them with your doctor.
7. Celebrate milestones. Being more
active is often one of the best things
you can do for your heart and overall
health. Take pride in what you can
accomplish in improving your health,
and celebrate each victory as it comes.

BETTER CARE FOR YOU
...story continued from page 3
types such as cancer of the lung,
colon, liver, and breast. The more
you drink, the higher your risk, so
drink in moderation, if at all.
4. Maintain a healthy weight – By
following the first three tips in this
list, you’re more likely to be at a
healthy weight. All of these actions
combined help minimize your risk
of many types of cancer.
5. Don’t smoke – This seems like
a no-brainer but still needs to be
said. Smoking raises your risk
of lung cancer as well as several
other types of cancer. Being around
secondhand smoke may also raise
cancer risk, as do chewing tobacco
and vaping.
6. Be sun-smart – Skin cancer is the
most common type of cancer and
is one of the easiest to prevent.
Get in the habit of using a broadspectrum
sunscreen with SPF 30
or higher daily, even if it’s cold or
cloudy outside. Limit time in the
sun during the middle of the day.
Also, don’t use tanning beds or
sun lamps.
7. Get vaccinated – Some cancers
may develop from viral infections,
such as HPV, HIV, or hepatitis.
There are vaccinations against
some of these viruses, such as HPV
and hepatitis B.
8. Get routine check-ups and
screenings – The best way to treat
cancer is to find it early, so stay up
to date on preventive appointments
and recommended screenings, such
as mammograms, colonoscopies,
and other tests.
9. Pay attention to your body
– You know your body best, so
if something doesn’t look or
feel right, trust your gut and
get it checked out by a medical
professional.
Across Marshall, we are continually updating, upgrading, and
improving our facilities to better care for you. In addition to
construction on our exciting new facility in El Dorado Hills, the

third diagnostic imaging suite. The
new system replaces decades-old
equipment and brings significant
upgrades and diagnostic capabilities
for treating Marshall’s patients. It will
also allow for a noticeable increase in
the number of patients able to receive
imaging and will decrease wait times.

Department’s ambulance bay was
recently marked by a ceremony
attended by hospital and community
leadership, emergency services
personnel, and the generous donors
who made the project possible. This
much-needed improvement will
shield our patients and personnel from
adverse weather conditions during
their most critical moments, ensuring
better protection for all involved.

New Cardiac
Catheterization Suite
Construction planning is underway
at the hospital on a new 935-squarefoot
state-of-the-art cardiac
catheterization suite. The new facility
and equipment will significantly

The newly established ELDO

poised to become a local favorite for
area epicureans. The vision came
from friends Angelo Heropoulos
and John Keller who sought to
create a dining destination featuring
their favorite dishes, “whether

a one-pound burger.” Pulling
from their shared experience as

behind some of the Bay Area’s
best restaurants, including The
Hero Ranch Kitchen and Flowers
Saratoga), the duo is now bringing
their passion for exceptional
cuisine to the Gold Country.
The restaurant occupies the
former Sienna location, though the
transformation is so impressive that
it’s unrecognizable from the inside.
The fully remodeled venue includes
a beautifully redesigned lounge and
bar with high-top tables, a striking
patio (soon to host live music and
evening soirées), and another patio
that management hopes will become
the area’s go-to brunch spot starting
this spring. Additionally, there’s an
elegant dining room for private events
and gatherings and a card room (EDH

From the moment you enter, it’s clear
ELDO offers an upscale experience.
Everything about the space shouts
precision, sophistication, and attention

What else makes me think this
could be the area’s new go-to spot for
date nights or special occasions? Aside
from the beautiful environs, craft
cocktails, masterly crafted dishes, and
five-star service, the restaurant also has
a standout wine policy: no corkage fees
and all bottles are marked at the same
price you would find at Total Wine &
More. Yes, you read that correctly. No
corkage and no upcharge on wine.
This alone is sure to bring local foodies
running in with their favorite vino
(I’ll be bringing a bottle of Rombauer
Zinfandel on my next visit).
My wife and I took a seat in their
lounge, since all tables were reserved.
Pro tip: reservations are recommended.
The lounge was by no means a
downgrade, however, and we were
happy to sip on a Taylor Made (Four
Roses Bourbon, Crème de Pêche,
white peach purée, lemon, egg white,
and bitters) and Preacher Punch (Don
Fulano Blanco Tequila, Aperol, guava
purée, lime, and Cointreau). The Taylor
Made had a fun twist—I won’t ruin it for
you—but let’s just say there’s a secret
ingredient that changes the entire flavor
profile and is a real POP to the palate.
The drinks went down almost too
smoothly as we awaited our crispy nigiri bites to share,
one of the tastiest appetizers I’ve enjoyed in quite
some time. Three tantalizing pieces of nigiri—bluefin,
Ora King salmon, and yellowtail hamachi—were each
served atop crisped rice and garnished with ponzu,
creamy avocado, tobiko, cilantro, and chili oil. I would
happily eat five plates of these.
For entrées we ordered the Braveheart filet and the
pan-seared scallops. The filet came with our choice of side
and sauce; we opted for the Brussels sprouts (tossed with
bacon and Meyer lemon) and cowboy butter with garlic,
fresh herbs, and spices, a choice we fully stand by. It was
absolutely everything you would want (and expect) from a
filet at a restaurant of this caliber.
The seared scallops easily rank amongst some of the
best I’ve ever tried. With parsnip purée, parsnip milk, fried
parsnip, chive oil, and black truffle, they had a slight touch
of sweetness, earthiness, and all the beautiful maritime
flavors of the sea. I must say, with only three to a plate, it’s
hard to justify calling this an entrée, but do not let that
detract from the fact that they’re three of the
most delicious scallops you’ll find.
Overall, the service was exemplary
(it’s worth noting that our server
had years of experience at Hero
Ranch before following the owners
to ELDO, providing an expertise we
noticed and appreciated), the food was
spectacular, and the drinks worthy of a
second (or third, please). Rest assured, ELDO
is here to stay.

If you’re craving delicious Japanese food in casual environs,
head to Tokyo Express in Rocklin. Their extensive menu
offers something for everyone. Let’s kick things off with
appetizers because, let’s be honest, ordering at least one is
non-negotiable. Edamame is always a fan favorite, and here you can have it with spicy
garlic, deep-fried, or boiled and sprinkled with coarse sea salt. But there are over
15 other starters, too, from shrimp tempura and ahi poke salad to spring rolls, BBQ
albacore, and miso soup. Personally, I went for the pan-fried gyoza, which turned
out to be a perfect prelude to the feast. As for mains, if you’re indecisive, no worries!
Select several and share. My friend and I did exactly that—ordering a teriyaki
roll, spicy tuna roll, and chicken teriyaki. The rolls were top-notch: fresh
ingredients, crisp nori (you can also opt for rolls wrapped in soy paper), and
perfectly balanced sauces that complemented as opposed to overpowered.
The chicken teriyaki, served alongside steamed rice and a side salad, was
also enjoyable. With rolls aplenty, plus nigiri, sashimi, udon, ramen, salads,
fried rice, noodle plates, and a kids’ menu, as I said earlier, there’s truly
something for everyone!

THE
Hot Potatoes
by SHAWNA NENNI
Potato, po-tah-to! No matter how you slice, dice, mash, or fry this versatile veggie, it’s
always a crowd-pleaser. In honor of St. Patrick’s Day, we rounded up some of the most
exciting and unique potato dishes in town, from crispy potato tacos and twice-baked
potatoes to mashed potato gnocchi and every tater in between.
Forget the mayo-based, processed
potato salads of your childhood, and say
hello to the Kartoffelsalat (German-style
potato salad) at Kathrin’s Biergarten.
Served either cold or warm (both are
amazing), each forkful features tender
tots, onions, crumbled bacon, and
house-made pickles, all cooked in a
savory beef broth and tossed in a tangy
vinegar-based dressing. Pair it with a pint
or giant Bavarian pretzel (or both) and
prepare to be impressed. 4810 Granite
Drive, Suite A1, Rocklin, 916-251-7502,
kathrinsbiergarten.com
Bawarchi Indian Cuisine is renowned
for its diverse, flavorful menu, offering
both North and South Indian plus Indo-
Chinese cuisine, tandoor and biryani
creations included. Potato lovers will
especially delight in the Aloo Gobi—a
comforting, crave-worthy vegan curry
made with potatoes and cauliflower,
infused with aromatic Indian spices, fresh
cilantro, and onions. 2085 Vine Street,
Suite 102, El Dorado Hills, 916-222-8222,

Discover Amore Mio Italian Bistro, where
authentic Italian cuisine comes to life with
passion, precision, and ingredients imported
directly from Italy. Don’t miss their Gnocchi
Del Norcino—a delightful combination of
mashed potato gnocchi bathed in cream
sauce alongside mushrooms, gorgonzola
cheese, and crumbled sausage. With
outdoor seating and a cozy, intimate
ambiance, it’s no wonder Amore Mio is a fan
favorite among both locals and passersby.

The Fat Rabbit Public House photo by Don Huddleston. Land Ocean photo courtesy of Land Ocean.
The Fat Rabbit Public House—a
European-style tavern in the heart of
Folsom—offers a diverse selection of brews
and classic British-style dishes. Guests
often describe the atmosphere as “warm,”
“homey,” and “historic,” and the food as
being “hot,” “hearty,” and “delicious.”
Their Shepherd’s Pie is a pub favorite,
featuring layers of seasoned ground beef
and veggies (peas, carrots, and onions)
with creamy mashed potatoes on top. Add
a pint of Guinness or Old Speckled Hen
and you have a complete, and completely
comforting, meal. 825 Sutter Street, Folsom,
916-985-3289, thefatrabbitpublichouse.site
Land Ocean combines the best of land
and sea, offering exceptional cuisine
in upscale, inviting environs. When it
comes to their potato accompaniments,
you can’t go wrong (fun fact: all of
them are made in-house, even the
potato chips!), but our favorite is the
irresistible Twice-Baked Potato. Served
hot in a skillet with creamy cheddar
cheese, chives, and crispy bacon,
it’s a must-try indulgence you won’t
soon forget! 2720 East Bidwell Street,

Experience gourmet dining at Sutter Street Steakhouse, the perfect spot for a celebratory
occasion or romantic evening. Savor the finest USDA prime cuts of beef and fresh seafood
as you sip a classic cocktail (dirty martini, anyone?) or fine wine at the elegant bar. For
a standout side that could easily take center stage, try the irresistible Cheddar Potato
Cakes. Crispy on the outside with a creamy, melt-in-your-mouth center, they’re the ultimate
indulgence. 604 Sutter Street, Folsom, 916-351-9100, sutterstreetsteakhouse.com
Placerville Public House, affectionately known as “The
Pub,” is a beloved fixture on Placerville’s Main Street. But
don’t expect the typical pub grub; here, you’ll find wellexecuted,
scratch-made meals crafted using fresh, locally
sourced ingredients. To start, try the Loaded Potato
Wedges: perfectly seasoned salt-and-pepper wedges
topped with homemade beer cheese, crispy bacon, green
onions, and ranch. Pure deliciousness (and decadence!)
in every bite. 305 Main Street, Placerville, 530-303-3792,

Junior Restaurant and Lounge is a hip, happening
spot known for their playful take on classic dishes. Guests
flock to the multi-story space to enjoy lunch, dinner, and
creative cocktails. But on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday
from 10 a.m.-3 p.m., you’ll find a killer good brunch. In
addition to what may be the best home fries in town, they
also serve a Loco Moco that’s loco good: a hearty plate
packed with white rice, two ground beef patties, fried
eggs, and red wine demi-glace over steamed white rice,
with a side of mac salad and savory home fries. 390 North

Q: What’s your process for
creating a new dish?
A: A new dish always begins with
some kind of inspiration. Maybe an
idea, a flavor, or a color concept.
I like to take a familiar dish or
everyday ingredient and put my
own spin on it while looking to
the seasons for direction. I think
it’s important
G
to take risks. If
you aren’t failing
occasionally, then
maybe you aren’t
trying enough
new things. I also
remember to not
let perfection
be the enemy of
greatness. It’s all
about putting yourself on the plate.

Q: What’s your advice for preparing
perfect sushi rice?
G
A: First, you need the right
rice! I was once known as
the “Lord of Rice,” traveling
around the world to judge
the best rice in the world.
For sushi, it’s essential to
use short-or mediumgrain
Japonica rice for the
perfect texture and flavor.
In Japan, it used to be said
that it takes five years
to master the art of preparing good sushi rice.
You need to understand how fresh the rice is to
determine how long to soak it, how much water
to use, and how to adjust it depending on the
altitude and season. Did you know Sacramento
Valley produces 97% of the state’s rice and is the
second largest rice-growing state in the U.S.?

Congrats to this month’s
nonprofit of the month:
Project Green
VOLUNTEER
SPOTLIGHT: Claire
McGhehey
Project Green's mission statement
is "to engage students to help grow
school gardens by creating a safe
outdoor educational environment
while nurturing emotional and social
development." By partnering with local
school districts, they assist in taking
gardens to the next level by applying
for grants (funds are used to purchase
garden materials and supplies),
Sixth-grade students help
to collaborate on a $10,000
grant application for
Project Green
holding fundraisers to support
garden programs, collaborating
with local master gardeners and
science teachers to develop garden
curriculum, and guiding and training
garden coordinators and volunteers.

What made you want to become a volunteer for
Project Green? As an El Dorado Hills resident and
Rescue Union School District parent, I’ve seen the
value that school gardens bring to students. Entering
the elementary school system during the pandemic,
there was uncertainty for all—a need to expand
the classroom beyond its four walls and spend time
outdoors whenever possible. Gardens provide a
safe, nurturing environment for children to build
peer relationships, develop creativity, and engage in
the care and responsibility a garden requires.
What do your volunteer duties entail? As the
finance chairperson, I’m responsible for managing
the monetary side of the nonprofit: overseeing the
budget, tracking expenses and income, ensuring
funds are allocated appropriately, and maintaining
accurate financial records, among other duties. As a
garden instructor, I lead classes in a variety of handson
activities (planting, watering, maintaining garden
beds, composting, harvesting, etc.).
Is there training required? No! All you need is
an open mind and heart. It’s a very hands-on
experience, and you quickly realize that the children
are excited to be there, eager to learn, and full of
energy. Their enthusiasm is contagious, and it makes
the experience enjoyable and rewarding without the
need for any formal training. Just being present and
ready to guide them through the garden is all that’s
needed to make a positive impact.
What’s the time commitment? As a weekly garden
volunteer, I spend about an hour each session
teaching a class and guiding students through
different garden-related activities.
What’s been the best day of volunteering so far?
The best days are when the kids get to try the fruits
and vegetables they've grown. There’s always such
a buzz of excitement when they taste the produce
they've nurtured from seed to harvest. It's rewarding
to see their pride and enthusiasm as they enjoy the
literal fruits of their labor, and it makes all the hard
work feel even more special.
What’s one of the biggest challenges? Keeping up
with the increasing demand from schools who want
to be part of the program while also being able to
fund their needs with the appropriate resources,
tools, materials, and support.
