COMMUNITY

FIRST

Long Beach native David Mosqueda, the outgoing

Mr. LA Leather 2024, talks to THE FIGHT about his

foray into the world of leather, sex positivity and

how Latinos can be engaged in our spaces

When did you become part of the leather/kink scene—and how

was that process for you?

I was 18 years old when I stumbled upon the movie “Cruising”

starring Al Pacino and I fell in love with all the seedy bar scenes.

I’ve also been a fan of a man in full gear after watching Batman

as a kid. Michelle Pfeiffer as “Catwoman,” in that beautiful

patent leather catsuit, definitely made me feel a certain way. I

became a part of the leather scene, because I really loved how

I felt in gear, whatever little I had. Even when I had bought my

first Muir cap and that was the only thing I wore out, I felt sexy. I

decided I wanted to run one day after going to the Eagle 562, in

Long Beach, and accidentally being there the same day as their

competition. I was able to see Pup Yoshi win their title, and I

thought to myself, that looks like fun, I could do that. So began

a seven year journey of preparing to be a title holding leatherman.

This meant shopping and collecting leather, but more

importantly, attending events and learning all the things people

wished they got out of leather spaces, that was still lacking.

How would you describe your past year as Mr. LA Leather? How

has the experience been for you?

Being Mr. LA Leather is easy. Being Mr. LA Leather when

people in charge are posting and saying whatever thing comes

to their mind, is hard. I loved being Mr. LA Leather and being

invited everywhere possible. I didn’t like having to answer for

histories of transphobia in large leather clubs that are associated

with the title. I found peace in this by saying “oh, I don’t support

that. You’ll have to take it up with them, but know I’ve also felt

the way you feel and I do not support their decisions and comments.”

The best thing anyone can do is distance themselves

from the people in our communities that are willing to let our

most marginalized be left behind.

Has being a title holder changed your outlook on the community?

Very much so. Title holders join a special group of recognition,

something I never had as a non title holder. Now everyone knows

my name, and everyone thinks I’ve been doing all this work after I

received my title, but the title just gave them reason to recognize

me. The community that has been with me from the beginning

has truly been a beacon in my life and in all truth they are what

BY MARK ARIEL | PHOTO BY ZIV SADE

real community is… My chosen family will always have priority and

my Latino community will always be the spaces I choose to uplift.

What did you want to accomplish as a title holder—and do you

feel you reached the goals you initially set for yourself?

I wanted to make sure that people felt a sense of comfort from

being around me. Rather than be in the biggest circles of other

titleholders, I liked being in a quiet corner of the bar, and chatting

with the folks around me. It was always fun to introduce myself

and watch them be surprised that a titleholder took the time to

talk to them instead of mingling among the who’s who in the bar.

I’m just a chill guy hanging out trying to avoid a big crowd. I also

wanted to make sure people acknowledged their biases. Did that

happen? Most likely not, because every couple weeks someone

has to make a transphobic or even micro aggressive comment

online. I’m honestly begging folks to just be quiet when it comes

to commenting about other peoples lived experiences. I wanted

to uplift Latino culture and Latino clubs and queer spaces, this

“The best thing anyone can do is distance themselves from

the people in our communities that are willing to let our most

marginalized be left behind.”

I think was my big project, and has definitely been what I have

been recognized for across the country and internationally. My

culture always comes first and I wear it proudly in all my leather.

What advice would you give to the next title holder?

Be kind, be patient. Don’t say yes to everything. There will be a

laundry list of places wanting you, skipping one won’t make the

world end. Take care of your body. And above all, listen to community

before anyone else.

What does the future hold for Mr. LA Leather 2024?

I step down this month, but my work doesn’t stop. I’ll still

travel the world in my leather talking about sex positivity and

how Latinos can be engaged in our spaces. I’ll still go around

the world meeting my Latino siblings. You can still find me attending

Cachondo in Long Beach where my journey began. But

most importantly, you’ll find me uplifting my community and

friends and family, which is why creating a new title for Latino

representation Los Angeles—Mr. Cuero — taking place Labor

Day weekend — has been so important for me and the other

producers involved.

GABRIEL GREEN

WELCOME TO LOS ANGELES

LEATHER PRIDE 2025

In the midst of uncertainty

and fear, the time has come

for all of us to stand up for

ourselves and one another

BY GABRIEL GREEN AND MISTRESS CYAN

We are facing extraordinarily challenging times.

We are at a point in history where people in

power are trying to erase and take away the

rights of People of Color, LGBTQIA2+, especially our trans

brothers and sisters, immigrants and anyone who does

not fit the mold of what society deems as a true American.

LET’S COME TOGETHER TO HONOR OUR

PAST, EMBRACE OUR PRESENT, BUILD

AN INCLUSIVE FUTURE FOR THE LEATHER

COMMUNITY AND REMIND THE WORLD

THAT WE ARE VISIBLE, THAT WE ARE

HERE AND ARE NOT GOING ANYWHERE!

In the midst of uncertainty and fear, the time has come

for all of us to stand up for ourselves and one another. That

is why the Los Angeles Leather Coalition (LALC) is proud to

present “Unite!”, a powerful and meaningful celebration

taking place from Sunday, March 23 to Sunday, March 30,

2025. This year’s Los Angeles Leather Pride is a call to action

for our community to come together in solidarity, pride,

and resilience during these challenging times.

Now more than ever, the message of unity resonates

deeply. “Unite!” will spotlight the diverse aspects of our

leather community, emphasizing inclusivity and connection

while honoring the traditions and history

that makes it so unique.

This week is not just a time to gather, but it’s a

time for activism. It’s a time to strengthen the bonds

within our community,

celebrate its rich

MISTRESS CYAN

heritage, and chart a

course for a stronger,

more united future.

It’s important

to remember that

activism takes many

forms. Activism is

not only protesting

and marching in the

streets. It’s showing

up to events, supporting

your local

bars and venues and

keeping them open,

volunteering and becoming

members of

different organizations and keeping them alive. It’s entering

and supporting contests, whether they be a Mr., Ms.,

Mx. or combinations thereof and open to all. It’s wearing

your colors in public. It’s standing proudly in your identity.

Most importantly it’s about being visible!

Activism is having courage in the face of adversity and

courage is not the absence of fear. Courage is having

the fear but doing it anyway.

“Unite!” promises to be an unforgettable week celebrating

the strength and spirit of the leather community that

will offer something for everyone whether you’re a longtime

member of the leather/kink family or a newcomer.

For the full schedule and event details, official visit

our website at losangelesleatherpride.com and social

media channels.

We invite everyone to take part in this meaningful

week, whether to celebrate, learn, or simply connect

with others who share the love of leather.

Let’s come together to honor our past, embrace our

present, build an inclusive future for the leather community

and remind the world that we are visible, that

we are here and are not going anywhere!

THE CHARITY PARTNERS

Trans Latin@ Coalition, Los Angeles LGBTQ+ Center’s Senior

Services Division named as charity partners for LA Leather Pride 2025

The Los Angeles Leather Coalition (LALC) has announced

that this year’s Charity Partners for LA Leather Pride

2025 (LALP) will be the Trans Latin@ Coalition (TLC) and

the Senior Services Division of the LA LGBTQ+ Center.

Each year several deserving local charities are selected to

be Charity Partners for the coming year. Charity Partners

work with the LAC all year and receive grants of proceeds of

the LALP in excess of costs and reserves to help them carry

on their important work. This year, they are delighted to

include the Trans Latin@ Coalition as a new Charity Partner!

Founded in 2009, The TransLatin@ Coalition (TLC) emerged as

a grassroots movement led by a group of Transgender, Gender

Expansive, and Intersex (TGI) immigrant women in Los Angeles.

Recognizing the urgent and unique needs of TGI Latin@ immigrants

in the United States, these trailblazers came together to

create a space for advocacy, empowerment, and direct support.

Over the years, TLC has grown into a nationally recognized organization

with representation in 10 states across the U.S. While

continuing to advocate for systemic change, TLC also provides

direct services to TGI individuals in Los Angeles.

As part of the Los Angeles LGBTQ+ Center, the world’s largest

LGBTQ support organization, the Senior Services Division

has the distinct pleasure of serving the people who lived and

fought for the hard-earned gains of the LGBTQ+ movement:

our elders. Expanding the Center’s holistic model of care

with a progressive vision for aging and community, our team

provides our seniors with everything from affordable housing

to healthcare, employment navigation and case management,

legal services, and more than 100 programs and activities that

offer a forum for some of the Center’s most joyous gatherings.

LALC is very grateful for the ongoing support of the Senior

Services Division for our annual LA LA Leather concert series,

this year being held in the gorgeous Renberg Theatre on the

LA LGBTQ+ Center campus.

LALP MARCH GUIDE 2025 | THE FIGHT 27

DON’T LET

A HEART

ATTACK

CRASH

YOUR PARTY.

Know the signs.

Save a life.

February is American Heart Month, and your

heart health is always on the agenda. We’re

talking about heart attacks – the unexpected

drama no one wants, especially not when you’re

living your best life. This isn’t fear-mongering, but

gay, bisexual, and transgender men face a higher

risk of heart attacks. It’s about knowing the score

and being ready to act.

What is a heart attack?

Your heart’s a party animal, but it needs oxygen to

keep the beat going. A heart attack happens when

the party’s cut short – blood flow to your heart gets

blocked or severely reduced. And the stats are

sobering: every 40 seconds, someone in the US

has a heart attack. That’s way too many fabulous

people sidelined.

What are common heart

attack warning signs?

Heart attacks aren’t always a Hollywood-style

chest-clutching scene. Sometimes they creep up

slowly, starting with mild discomfort. While left

arm pain is often associated with cisgender men,

remember that heart attacks show up differently in

everyone. If you notice any of the following, call

911 immediately:

CHEST DISCOMFORT: Pressure, squeezing,

fullness, or pain in the center of your chest lasting

more than a few minutes.

UPPER BODY DISCOMFORT: Pain or discomfort

spreading to one or both arms, your back, neck,

jaw, or stomach.

SHORTNESS OF BREATH: This can happen with

or without chest discomfort. Suddenly gasping for

air? That’s a red flag.

OTHER SIGNS: Breaking out in a cold sweat,

nausea, lightheadedness – these aren’t just

symptoms of a bad night out.

KNOW THE SIGNS, SAVE

A LIFE (MAYBE YOURS).

SECONDS COUNT.

Fast action can help with a full recovery. If you

suspect a heart attack, call 911. It’s the fastest route

to life-saving treatment.

And when you need cardiac care,

A cardiac

emergency

is our specialty.

When alarming symptoms arise, you want the best care possible. And when

it comes to your heart, and the ones closest to you, that means getting to a

hospital with specialized cardiac services including advanced diagnostics and

treatments. At Dignity Health hospitals in L.A. County and the Inland Empire,

we've been recognized by Healthgrades as a Five-Star Recipient for Treatment

of Heart Failure, and honored by the Human Rights Campaign Foundation as

an LGBTQ+ Healthcare Equality Leader for equitable and inclusive patient care.

Get to know more about our advanced cardiac care before an emergency strikes

at dignityhealth.org/socal/heart.
