News from Extension...New Year, New Beginnings
The start of a new year is often a time to reflect on what was good about the past year and to look
forward to changes and improvements in the year to come. New Trier Extension is no exception. For
the spring term we are keeping all our popular classes and adding over two dozen new offerings in
response to current trends, needs among community members and feedback from our participants.
We are seeing renewed health in the real estate market and, with it, more estate sales. People are
buying and selling homes; others are downsizing to condos; still others are facing the need to dispose
of their parents’ estates. If any of these situations applies to you, we have several courses that can
help. Organizing Your Home To Show and Sell will help you de-clutter to show your home to its
best advantage. How Do I Sell My Stuff? is a new class that will teach you what to do with all the
unwanted items from your home or a parent’s house. And the What To Know Before You’re Suddenly
On Your Own and Estate Planning classes will help ensure that you are organized for the future.
Now that the major holidays are over, you may have more time to try things you’ve always wanted
to learn. Whether that’s Beginning Bridge, an artistic endeavor such as Glass, Beading, Painting
or Creative Writing, you’ll find classes that will get you started the right way.
If, like so many of us, you want to begin the new year by getting healthier, there are a host of fitness
classes from Conditioning and Strength Training to Fencing and Rowing to Yoga and T’ai Chi
that will match your needs. And there are two new cooking classes to help: Power Foods and I Can
Eat This and Lose Weight!
No term would be complete without our highly popular day trips. You can join us for Polish Chicago:
Culinary and Cultural Tour. We will be re-visiting Chicago’s Grand Old Synagogues which was
an immediate sellout last fall. We have a new trip to some of the Far North Hidden Gems between
here and the Wisconsin line: Crab Tree Farm, North Shore Distillery and Nielsen-Massey (the vanilla
people). We’ll go even farther north on a Milwaukee Culinary Tour, as well as having A Day of
Antiquity at the Oriental Institute and a special new exhibit at the Field Museum.
We hope you’ll find the continuation of a favorite class or a brand new offering that’s appealing.
If there is a class you’d like to see us offer—or one you’d like to teach—we’d love to discuss the
possibilities.
Please browse the catalog to find a new beginning to your new year.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I register over the phone or online?
Because your signature is required for credit card transactions, we are unable to accept
phone registrations. At the present time, online registration is for online classes
only, not those that meet at New Trier or our various locations.
Is it safe to have my credit card information on a fax?
Yes. Our fax machine is in our manager’s office and only NTX office staff has access.
After we charge your credit card, your original form is shredded and no one can see
your account number in any record. If you prefer, you may leave that blank and call our
office with your credit card number; just be sure to sign your registration form.
Once I register, how do I know where to go for my class?
You will receive a registration confirmation within a few days listing all dates, times,
and location for your class along with a map and any other information (supply list,
parking permit, etc.) This is for your information only; the confirmation is not necessary
for entrance to class. If you do not receive confirmation, please call the office.
Do you have classes for children?
Almost all classes are open to adults and students high school age or older. Fencing
and a few other classes are open to younger students. Please call the office to check
before enrolling anyone younger than high school age if there is any question.
I don’t live in the New Trier school district? Can I take your classes?
Yes. Out-of-district residents are welcome and pay the listed tuition.
I have registered and find that I cannot attend my class. Can I get a refund?
If you withdraw at least 3 full working days prior to the start of class (or the registration
deadline, where applicable), you will receive a refund minus a $15 withdrawal
fee. No refunds will be given after that time.
Is your catalog on the Web?
Yes. You can now follow us on Facebook to get news of class changes and you can view
the entire catalog, read about your instructor and more at
www.NewTrierExtension.org
Spend the day learning about Chicago’s huge and dynamic Polish
community. Join Jonathan Bean and discover the history and
culture of the more than one million Poles and their descendants
who call Chicago home. We’ll spend time at the Polish American
Museum and visit some of the great churches you see from the
Kennedy Expressway—St. John Cantius Church, Holy Trinity
Polish Mission and St. Stanislaus Kostka. We’ll have a delicious,
authentic lunch and have time for some shopping. You’ll get a map,
FAR NORTH HIDDEN GEMS
There are so many secret spots between here
and the Wisconsin border. We’ll visit three
of the best. Start your day discovering one of
the true gems to the north—Crab Tree Farm.
Originally a commercial dairy, it has had
three owners in its one hundred year history:
Grace Durand, who founded a dairy on the property; William McCormick Blair, who commissioned
David Adler to design a summer house; and, currently, Mr. and Mrs. John H. Bryan. Over the last
thirty years the farm buildings have undergone extensive renovation and now house museum-quality
collections of American and English Arts and Crafts furniture and decorative arts. After a delicious
lunch, we will learn about spirits as we visit North Shore Distillery for a tour and tasting of their
products. Our last stop will be Nielsen-Massey, most noted for their incredible vanilla products, but
home to many distinctive flavors. Limit of 13.
DAY TRIPS
CHICAGO’S GRAND OLD SYNAGOGUES
Jews began trickling into Chicago shortly after its incorporation in
1833 and, like other religious groups, began establishing places of
worship. The first, KAM, as well as a group that broke off and formed
Sinai Congregation, still exist in the city today. Other synagogues
were not as lucky; as the city’s population shifted, congregations also
moved and their grand old synagogues were sold off and repurposed,
many into Baptist churches. Join us as we visit these and other magnificent
edifices—some for a look inside and others to admire the
architecture: Ebenezer Baptist Church (originally Isaiah Temple and
architect David Adler’s last commission), Beth Shalom B’nai Zaken
Ethiopian Hebrew Congregation, Operation PUSH (an earlier KAM
home), Rodfei Zedek and more. We’ll have a wonderful lunch at one
of Jonathan Bean’s favorite places. Join us for this interesting and
fulfilling day. Limit of 13.
For the stories of even more old synagogues, see Forgotten Synagogues on page 4.
While Chicago has become known for its food, our neighbor to the north has also experienced a surge
in locally-produced and culinary treats. Join Jonathan Bean on an exploration of some of the finest
Milwaukee offerings. We’ll go to the Milwaukee Public Market featuring the best of Wisconsin’s
agricultural heritage plus artisan and ethnic foods. No visit to Milwaukee is complete without a stop
at a local brewery to learn how beer is made. We’ll have lunch at one of Jon’s favorite eateries. And
we’ll go to at Usinger’s Famous Sausage, the Historic Third Ward (a turn-of-the-century neighborhood
home to galleries, specialty shops and restaurants), and whatever else catches our fancy. We’ll
have coolers on the bus for any food purchases. Limit of 13.
DAY TRIPS
A DAY OF ANTIQUITY
One gallery at the Oriental Institute has been transformed into a lush bird
habitat with videos of birds flying overhead and the sounds of birds calling
to each other. All this sets the stage for Between Heaven and Earth:
Birds in Ancient Egypt, the first American exhibit devoted to birds in the
Nile Valley. The exhibit includes artifacts that emphasize how omnipresent
birds were in ancient Egyptian culture, including the newest forensic
examination of bird mummies, objects from the OI collection that have
never been exhibited before, and objects on loan from other sources such
as the Brooklyn Museum’s spectacular coffin for an ibis mummy. We’ll pause for lunch and then
return to even earlier times with a visit to Scenes from the Stone Age: The
Cave Paintings of Lascaux at the Field Museum. This special exhibit is a
monumental, life-size re-creation of the cave in Southern France with fullsize
replicas of paintings and engravings of animals made almost 20,000
years ago, including some shown for the first time. The actual caves have
been closed to the public since 1963, so this may be your only opportunity
to experience this sophisticated, evocative imagery. Limit of 13.
Six hundred years and more (415-1066) are no longer as “dark” as they
once were. New discoveries, mostly archaeological, help to clarify the great
Anglo-Saxon incursions and the age of the Vikings. This is the period of
those household words: Beowulf, The Venerable Bede, Etherled the Unready
and Harald Hardrada. Not familiar at your house? Come learn how you, too,
can “see the light”!
In the 1930s, Chicago had 290,000 Jews and 175 synagogues; in 2003, there
were 260,000 Jews but, with the exception of West Rogers Park, only seven or
eight synagogues left in Chicago proper. What happened to all those buildings,
many of which were magnificent architectural treasures? Join Robb Packer as
he relates, through pictures and stories, the history of Chicago's synagogues,
many lost to the ages, others repurposed into other houses of worship and a
very few still with us.
1 session on Tuesday (Apr 23) 7:00-9:00 pm
131-702 NT Northfield Campus (seniors $23)/ $29
Robb Packer, building inspector and amateur photographer, decided to make a photographic
record of his and his wife’s family history in Chicago. His in-laws’ synagogue in Albany
Park, founded in the early 1920s, had ceased to exist as a physical presence. Going
into an unfamiliar neighborhood to inspect a building, he noticed an unusual church with a
condo building adjacent to it. He discovered that the church was once a synagogue and the
condo building had been its social hall. Thus began his journey of research and preserving
photographically the history of synagogues in Chicago.
Exploring Paris
Robert Buess
This popular class is a combination of art appreciation and art history
presented in a new, fun way by a Milwaukee Art Museum lecturer, docent
and collector. You will learn interesting and enjoyable ways to look at and
discuss art. The class uses big art events to tell the story, instead of the usual
year-by-year approach. See how the Paris Salon Art Show of 1863 led to
Impressionism; how artists motivated one another and drew inspiration from
the past; how a 1913 New York City art show brought European Modern Art
(Picasso, Kandinsky, Munch) to America and how it changed American art.
This class is really fun for anyone who enjoys looking at art.
4 sessions on Mondays (Feb 25-Mar 18) 7:00-9:00 pm
131-705 NT Northfield (seniors $71)/ $88
This class builds on Get Excited Looking at Art. Plenty of high resolution
images help drive discussion as we look at 20th and 21st Century Art. We’ll
look closely at several very progressive art movements: Surrealism (Dali,
Magritte); Abstract Expressionism (Pollock, de Kooning) and Pop Art (Warhol,
Lichtenstein). The artists were not the only ones evolving in the past
century; we, the viewers, now interact differently with art.
4 sessions on Mondays (Apr 1-Apr 22) 7:00-9:00 pm
131-706 NT Northfield (seniors $71)/ $88
Poets, travel writers and visitors have sung the praises of Paris for years—and
rightly so. Its combination of magnificent sights, wonderful food, agreeable
weather and “walkability” is unbeatable. It’s the most-visited city in the
world. Come explore Paris through slides and lecture. Find out a bit about
its history, see and hear about its major sights, and learn the practical details
of visiting the City of Light—arrival, getting around, money, prices—to
name a few. Robert Buess has been a flight attendant on Chicago-to-Paris
flights for twenty years, speaks French, and has taught at NTX since 1993. If
you’re planning a first trip to Paris, this is a “can’t miss” class! Limit of 20.
Are you dealing with a parent's estate and wondering what to do with
everything while keeping it fair for everyone in the family? Or maybe you
are downsizing and no longer have room for everything. Many of us just
have too much stuff—furniture, china, antiques, collectibles, etc—that we
It's a daunting task that feels like too much to tackle. In this class you will
learn about the steps to take, how to decide what to keep and why or why not,
how and how not to sell, and the pros and cons of various outlets including
auction houses, estate sales, online sales (eBay, Craig's List), garage sales,
Little known except for the occasional headline, Yemen is a small country
with a long and interesting history, and since it sits at a major crossroads
of trade, it has a great culinary history too. Throughout the ’80s Jon lived
and worked with lots of Yemenites and learned how to cook their fantastic
dishes. You’ll learn to make Malawach—a flaky, fried bread— that we’ll
serve with grated tomato and Zhug—a spicy hot pepper relish that every
Yemenite makes. We’ll also make Rookbeh—a deliciously seasoned meat
soup; Mchooj—spiced, fried fish; and for dessert we’ll make Nayem—cardamom
cakes served with Café Qishr—coffee spiced and prepared like it’s
been done for centuries. You’ll get the recipes, bibliography and grocery
A Workshop
Personal Essay and
Memoir Writing
Ellen Blum Barish
“Writing is always a voyage of discovery.”
- Nadine Gordimer
You’re a writer, you know it, but for some reason you rarely—or never—sit
down to write. Who knows why not? Too many “more important” things
to do? The echo of harsh words from an old English teacher? Fear of what
you might discover? Honestly, haven’t you waited long enough? Join us.
Experience the transformation and empowerment of claiming your voice
through writing. In this workshop, designed for both beginning and more
experienced writers, through exercises and assignments, we explore various
aspects of writing, including use of detail, characterization, point of view,
dialogue and figurative language. But most of all, we encourage and support
each other in our writing effort. The only requirement is a willingness to
embark on this “voyage of discovery.” Limit of 10.
In this workshop you will explore the tools of powerful writing. We’ll look
at how place, detail, dialogue, scene, voice, structure, metaphor, memory and
language can bring non-fiction stories to life. Selected readings will highlight
these tools and inspire you and there will be plenty of writing prompts
designed to help stimulate your imagination and unearth your memories for
personal essays and memoir pieces. We do all of this in a gentle and supportive
atmosphere at a pace that works for you. All levels of writing are
welcome. Limit of 10.
Writing Fiction for Fun
Pamela Dell
NEW
Mary Jane Ratty
Writing, like all artistic endeavors, needs creative spark tempered with the
tools of the craft to be at its best. If you aren't sure of what the tools are or
how to use them, your work may suffer without you understanding why.
This class will help you become a better creative writer, no matter what age
or audience you want to write for—children, young adult or adult—fiction
or non-fiction. Weekly presentations and related assignments on specific
aspects of writing will help you understand and apply these tools in the
crucial areas of dialog, plot, point of view, character development and much
more. We'll also address aspects of publishing, including how to go about
submitting work, getting an agent, and all the essentials of the publishing
process. Open to all levels.
10 sessions on Tuesdays (Feb 19-Apr 30) 1:00-3:00 pm
131-930 NT Northfield (seniors $180)/ $200
Storytelling is an age-old human impulse and this workshop is designed to
encourage that impulse in a fun and creative way. We’ll brainstorm ideas and
use writing, reading, take-home assignments, and in-class exercises to spark
creative invention and help you develop your work. If you have a tale to tell
that’s still brewing in your mind, a fictional work in progress, or you want
to take a slice of real life and mold it into something intriguingly new, you’ll
get the advantage of an experienced editorial eye and a relaxed, nurturing
atmosphere in which to receive feedback that will help turn your rough gems
into polished pieces. Open to all levels.
