Recent months have been challenging for us here in Malaysia and for the rest of the world

as we navigate a new normal amid the Covid-19 pandemic. To stop the spread of the virus

we have had to radically change almost everything we do: how we work, exercise, socialise,

shop, manage our health, educate our kids and take care of family members.

We all want things to go back to the way it was before but what most of us have

probably not yet realised is that things won’t go back to normal, not in a few weeks or even

a few months. Some things never will.

In an interview with LinkedIn recently, Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates shared that it will be a while before

many things get back to normal and a lot about everyday life has probably been changed forever. “Will people

want to go travel?” asked Bill. “Will they want to go to restaurants? So, even once the government is saying

these activities are OK, we can’t expect the demand side to re-emerge overnight.”

From having to constantly practice social distancing and getting used to life without the outdoors to

continually washing our hands and wearing masks, this is what life looks like for us. It is important for us to

step back and revisit the situation from a bird’s eye view. We are not in this alone as communities pull together

to make things better.

As our days continue to look different, we are resilient and we will come out of this stronger. This forced

change in our “used to be” everyday life will permit us time to slow down and appreciate just how lucky we

really are as a society.

Though life and work during this pandemic is unusual, uncertain and unpredictable, it is now more

apparent than ever that we must work together to get through it. Because very likely the new normal is here to

stay and the quicker we adjust to that fact, the greater our chance to survive, and possibly thrive.

Into The Frame

Safilo Malaysia hosted an exclusive launch party in Pavilion

Kuala Lumpur to showcase the latest SS2020 Levi’s Eyewear

Collection. The event showcased the new partnership between

heritage eyewear manufacturer Safilo and Levi’s, bringing to

life the inspirations and creative behind the brand. The new

collection features contemporary designs and modern colour

combinations, and is masterfully curated with a wide range

and selection. Designed with the fashion forward consumer

in mind, the new Levi’s eyewear features a wide range of

functional yet stylish styles, evoking the effortless appeal of the

California lifestyle.

The Making Of An Aikon

Renowned luxury watchmaker Maurice Lacroix recently

unveiled its latest Aikon Collection in Thailand, marking the

first time these new designs are being shown in Asia. The

event, called ‘The Aikonic Novelties of 2020 collection’ offered

guests a first glimpse at the new watches in store, including five

all-new, signature designs. Along with the new collection, there

was also a mini exhibition by friends of the brand, featuring

work that has been carefully selected based on exquisite

craftsmanship. Stéphane Waser, managing director of Maurice

Lacroix and sales director Marcel Gut both from Switzerland

attended the special event which took place at the rooftop on

the 29 th floor of SO Sofitel Bangkok.

Family Chronicles

Luxury retail group Valiram launched a coffee table book that

charts the history of the company since its founding in 1935. Titled

Valiram: The First Hundred Years, the book is a passion project led

by Valiram executive directors and brothers Sharan, Ashvin and

Mukesh Valiram, alongside their mother Datin Champa Valiram.

The book showcases the family’s beginning in Malaya in the 1930s

to its success today as a thriving retail business that spans across

Asia. To celebrate the publication, more than 500 prominent

guests gathered for high tea at the Grand Ballroom of the St Regis

Kuala Lumpur. The event was officiated by the Sultan of Selangor

A Timely Debut

Held at the Bvlgari Resort Dubai early of this year in January, the

LVMH Watch Week Dubai 2020 was created to showcase the

Top Gun: Maverick

This sequel to the 1986 movie Top Gun sees Tom Cruise returning as

Pete “Maverick” Mitchell. Maverick has spent the past three decades as

one of the Navy’s top aviators. He’s now set to pass his wisdom onto a

new batch of Top Gun recruits for a specialised mission that nobody has

seen before. In recently released trailers, Maverick appears to be a handson

teacher, inviting students to practice dogfighting by taking him on

two at a time. As you might expect, the recruits are shocked out of their

amusement fairly quickly as Maverick shows why he’s so highly regarded.

The sequel will also star Jennifer Connelly as the movie’s female lead,

playing a single mother who runs a local bar near the Navy base. She’ll

be joined by Jon Hamm and Ed Harris, the latter as a so far unnamed

rear admiral and Maverick’s direct superior.

Candyman

From national footballer to an educationist,

Brando Pillai shares a glimpse on what

drives him and his belief in ensuring children

receive the best education.

There has not been much change to

the way that we teach our children in

schools for years. Large number of

students crowd a room during classes

as teachers lecture on as stressful

standardised exams are dished out at

the end of the year, sometimes twice a year! So does this

still work? Brando Pillai says probably not.

As Principal at Grace Homeschooling Resource

Centre (GHRC) and former national footballer, Brando is

of the opinion that if he had the opportunity to change

one thing about the education system it would be reducing

standardised testing. “I don’t think standardised testing is

a fair scale to determine if you’re smart or not. Teachers

may be forced to teach students how to take the test instead

of the subjects itself. It is designed for you to either blend

into society or be excluded, not enabling you to create any

sort of impact or change to society.”

The human mind is one of the most if not the most

powerful things on earth and its ability to think outside the

box and imagination is what Brando believes will lead a

positive change and impact on society. Confining the mind

into small spaces such as standardised testing may have an

adverse effect on producing future visionaries.

It has been one of GHRC tenets to instill values

and character education that prepares young men and

women to be contributing members of society amidst

the challenges of an ever-changing world. Every child

is important, shares Brando, hence the school’s small

classroom settings that aims to meet the needs of each

child whatever that need may be.

“I had moved to Tropicana before I made my

first trip abroad and found this neighbourhood

developing everytime I came home to visit. I find

it hard to relocate or to even entertain that idea!

It is a place I can safely call home. It’s peaceful

and trendy, and over the years of development

it has managed to keep that homey feel to the

neighbourhood. My family and I love it and we’ll

be here for quite some time.”

As one of the first homeschooling centres in the country

when it first started in 1998, GHRC was a homeschooling

centre that was an extension of the home in assisting parents

to fulfill a solid foundation with the use of a holistic approach

to education.

Today, with more than 150 students enrolled, the school

is currently transitioning into being an international school

as GHRC equip and provide children with what is required

to succeed in both their primary and secondary years of

education.

From Field To Classroom

So how did this teen star footballer (he was one of the youngest

contracted players in the Malaysian Premier League and the

Omani Professional Football League) immersed himself in

the education line as an adult? Growing up in Malaysia as

a child, Brando soon left the country for Brazil at the age of

12 to pursue his dream of becoming a pro footballer. As fate

would have it he returned to Malaysia a few years later before

spreading his wings to different parts of the world and finally

settling down in the US.

During his time abroad, Brando immersed himself

amongst the locals to experience the many different cultures

where he had to change and adapt to many different

environments all over again. It was during his student days

in New York that Brando got interested in education. As a

foreign student in America, he was prohibited from working

beyond the university campus. Not one to be daunted by such

a challenge, he soon applied to be a Graduate Assistant to

one of his professors at the Robert B. Willumstad School of

Business in Adelphi University.

What started off with just assisting in organising

paperwork, Brando found himself tasked with marking

papers, mentoring students, lecturing, developing case studies,

curriculum research and development and organising primary

events for the business school. Coupled with his experience

and dedication, he soon made his way back to Malaysia in

2016 to join GHRC.

To stay connected to the latest in education, Brando

continues to stay in touch with his former colleagues in New

York. “Technology is an important teaching aid where visual

illustration is concerned, reducing paperwork, communicating

with students outside the classrooms, access to information

and when integrated properly, improve the school’s overall

efficiency,” he says.

“I believe nothing can beat the human touch, because

technology is just as good as the people using them. In today’s

world, technology is something unavoidable. It’s everywhere

as kids love it, it appeals to them and can spark an interest

in learning among the younger kids, more specifically, selflearning.

It allows for learning to continue beyond the physical

presence of a teacher and classroom setting.”

More Than Just A Teacher

Having been in the education line for several years now,

Brando admits that it hasn’t been without its own set of

challenges. One of it has been dealing with social issues such

as drugs, alcohol, sex, physical and cyber bullying as well as

peer pressure among young students. “Our job as educators

is not only to teach what is ‘2+2’ but to assist in social and

character development. If these issues are not dealt with, it

has a negative impact on the child’s development, disrupting

their ability to learn or to concentrate on what is important,”

he shares.

It’s these very social issues that led him to open Gracie

Barra Malaysia, a world renowned Brazilian Jiu Jitsu

School that uses the sport to address these social issues,

specifically bullying. “Eight out of ten Malaysian children

have encountered bullying in their respective schools and this

sport can be used as a tool to reach out and teach adolescents

to respect one’s body and instill a form of self-worth and

confidence. Gracie Barra Malaysia teaches students to defend

themselves against physical and mental bullying or attacks.”

Seeing how much he juggles on a daily basis, Brando

reveals that his family keeps him grounded and motivated.

He names his parents and his siblings as his biggest supporters

and has also set a very high standard for himself through their

professional accomplishments that he admires.

With his years of travelling and living abroad, it is no

surprise that Brando finds comfort in having close ties to the

community that he lives in. He and his family have called

Tropicana home for close to 20 years.

The terminal module, with a large double surface, is the

Singapore’s pioneer photographer and

Cultural Medallion recipient, Chua Soo

Bin, in a retrospective exhibition, Chua

Soo Bin: Truths & Legends at National

Gallery Singapore. Featuring close to

100 photographic works alongside archival materials, the

exhibition features Chua’s remarkable decades-long career.

Chua is known for his ability to capture definitive portraits

and sensitive images, built on his mastery of the craft and

understanding of his subjects.

It gives prominence to some of these pivotal works in the

development of photography in Singapore, a history which

is traditionally overlooked, and explores the timelessness and

intricacy of his portraiture against the backdrop of a thriving

social media photography scene today.

“Spotlighting the works of such artists and educating

the public of their artistic practices continue to be a priority

for the Gallery. While photography has traditionally been

under-researched in Singapore, it has played a significant

role in our art history. The iconic works of Chua Soo Bin

are excellent examples of the potential of photography as

an art form. It has been exactly three decades since Legends

was completed. We hope that this retrospective will raise

awareness of Chua’s significant contributions to Singapore’s

art scene as a photographer, a gallerist, art dealer and art

patron. At the same time, visitors will be inspired to learn

more about Singapore’s very own photographers and reflect

on the changing role of photography,” says Dr Eugene Tan,

Director of National Gallery Singapore.

Observe Iconic Portraits

The exhibition is anchored by Chua’s Legends series, which

comprises iconic portraits of 14 established Chinese ink

masters, offering a rare insight into the nuances of their daily

lives. It also includes his earlier pictorial and commercial

photographs to trace the development of his artistic practice.

The exhibition is made up of three thematic sections.

The first and largest part of the exhibition features the

Legends photographs. Exhibiting alongside the portraits of

the ink masters is a selection of ink paintings by these artists,

and notes by renowned Chinese art historian Liu Xilin, who

knew these men personally. Collectively, they add a new

dimension to the stories revealed in the portraits to enrich the

viewing experience.

The second section delves into the candid and informal

portraits taken by Chua of modern Chinese ink artist Wu

Guanzhong, over two decades. These photographs reveal

different aspects of Wu’s life, from his constant sketching to

his vivacious personality and love for his family, as well as the

rapport between artist and photographer.

The final section examines Chua’s life, from his early years

in advertising to the many ways in which he has contributed to

the art scene in Singapore. In addition to his earlier pictorial

and commercial photographs alongside archival materials,

visitors can also view a short 1989 documentary about Chua

to trace the development of his art practice and learn more

about his artistic process.

A Legend Is Born

Chua’s interest in arts and photography started from a young

age. He first took up weekend art classes at the Nanyang

Academy of Fine Arts in the 1950s under the tutelage of

Singapore artist Cheong Soo Pieng. Driven by his growing

interest in photography, the self-taught photographer

participated actively in the Photographic Society of Singapore

during the 1950s and 1960s, from organising exhibitions to

judging at various open-call competitions.

His photographs even earned him an Associateship of the

Royal Photographic Society in Great Britain in 1955, making

him the youngest associate in Singapore at the time! Chua’s

photographic practice was not always in fine arts. Instead, he

started out as a layout artist in the advertising industry in 1957

before rising through the ranks to become an Art Director and

worked on major international advertising campaigns.

He then started his own photography studio after

leaving advertising, and served both local and international

companies such as Singapore Airlines and Lanvin. Some of

the most enduring images of the Singapore Girl were taken

by him in the 1980s, and his works on the brand also won him

the top PATA (Pacific Asia Travel Association) Award.

It was during a visit to China, then a newly opened-up

tourist destination, in the early 80s to photograph the land,

its people and culture to produce promotional material that

made an impact on Chua. By then an art collector, Chua

noticed the lack of proper photographic documentation of

the Chinese ink masters whose work he greatly admired. This

was when he conceived the plan to capture in photographs the

most senior and influential living artists of Chinese painting

and immortalise them in a book.

Chua then took these portraits to 15 cities across Asia,

including Beijing, Hangzhou and Hong Kong, giving the

global audience a deeper insight into these masters through

a Singaporean lens.

military needs in mind and was designed with input from

actor Daniel Craig himself. The 42mm timepiece has been

A Marvel Of Sophistication

Bell & Ross has partnered with the Renault F1 Team

since 2016 and has been studying the world of Formula

1 ever since. This coming together of two French brands,

united by their shared values of high performance and

high tech has led to the newly released watches with

a “Formula 1 of the Future” theme. The collection is

composed of four sports chronographs including this

exceptional Haute Horlogerie Tourbillon, the BR-X1

Tourbillon R.S.20. Available in a limited edition of just

20 pieces, the watch features a case cut from titanium,

a lightweight and resistant material used in Formula 1.

Protected by ceramic elements, a high-density rubber

insert improves handling while the fixed bezel houses

the minute track, and the rotating ring features a “stopstart”

indication. Its large calibre is regulated by a flying

tourbillon with a variable inertia balance. The barrel

spring, with manual winding, provides it with a power

reserve of 100 hours (hand indicator). The chronograph

function, clearly visible on the dial side, is driven by

a mono-pusher that activates a column wheel and the

watch also features a 30-minute instantaneous counter.

Here is a watch that comes equipped with a heart rate monitor and GPS functionality so you can monitor your health daily. The Casio

GBD-H1000 is packed with five-sensor functions. It also has an optical sensor that can measure heart rate by detecting the blood flow

under the skin, a triple sensor that measures altitude/barometric pressure, compass bearing and temperature, and an acceleration sensor

that measures step count and distance traveled. This watch also comes with GPS functionality that acquires location information. You

of hard work. Founder and Group Managing Director, Dr Leon Chuah explains how

he got his unique business idea off the ground.

Stress has nowadays become a part of

our lives. To relieve this stress, many of

us have greater than ever expectations

from the personal care services that we

get. We now consider our visit to the spa

as not just a beautification process but a

spiritual getaway, to uplift our soul and feel good about

ourselves.

To ensure a truly serene experience, the spa

needs to connect with you; a connection where every

miniscule detail matters. The experience starts from

the moment you enter the spa door. How the staff

greets you, ambience of the waiting room, how well

the spa understands your requirements, and then

precisely delivering what you wanted, everything is an

experience. And that has been the cornerstone of Thai

Odyssey’s success.

Founder and Group Managing Director of Thai

Odyssey, Dr Leon Chuah ventured into the spa and

wellness industry 16 years ago, a road less travelled by

others to establish an enterprise which has now grown to

become one of Malaysia’s biggest chain of massage spas.

A Winning Formula

It all started when Dr Leon was first introduced to

Thai massage services. “At a Thai expo, Thai massage

services were offered at one of the booths as part of

the event activities. That was the time when I was

exposed to Thai massage and good Thai therapists. It

totally changed my life and my business career. After

the expo, the six therapists came to my office and asked

if I could help them establish themselves in Malaysia. I

said ‘yes’,” shares Dr Leon looking back.

He quickly opened a mobile kiosk with only 200 sq/

ft of service space at the corridor of a shopping centre.

Surprisingly, the response to the massage therapies

was so good he had to utilised a numbered system to

manage patrons. That was when Dr Leon realised that

Thai massage services could be a viable business.

However, Dr Leon said that despite having

challenges coming across from all corners, with many

thinking he was mad for venturing into this business

and the bad rep that the industry faced at the time,

he was determined to make it work. Six months later,

he moved into a proper shoplot and the business has

experienced growth ever since.

“We want our customers to feel that they have

entered into a sanctuary that is peaceful, calm and

restful, as if they have left the world of chaos and

stress behind for a brief journey into tranquility. Apart

from indulging in an authentic Thai massage, at Thai

Odyssey, we emphasise on Thai friendly hospitality,

cordial service culture, aesthetic arts and a serene

environment - a desired total wellbeing respite package,

only Thai Odyssey can offer,” says Dr Leon.

Today, Thai Odyssey has more than 70 outlets in

Malaysia, Thailand, Cambodia, Indonesia and China,

and very soon in Taiwan and Vietnam, changing along

the way the concept and perception of a wholesome

massage experience. Over the years, thanks to Thai

Odyssey’s hard working colleagues, the brand has won

more than 30 local and international awards.


GAME CHANGER

Thai Odyssey is serious about changing the

subservient image that plague many spa therapists. To

help elevate the image of the industry, Dr Leon has

taken the lead to form a committee which comprises of

Thai Odyssey members and key people from the IPEC

Certification Bureau to work on the spa industry’s

first ever ISO Certification effort catered to Thai Spa

therapists. With this accreditation, the therapists will

be recognised and valued. This will assure customers

of quality and safety, increasing their confidence with

the spa services. At the same time, be able to raise the

standard of all spa brands in ASEAN and beyond.

“When Thai Odyssey was recognised in the

Malaysia Book of Records to be the largest Thai Spa

operator in Malaysia, I knew we had successfully

transformed the image of the massage service industry

to be a genuine business for all to enjoy,” says Dr Leon

proudly.

The Road Ahead

Early this year, Thai Odyssey went through a brand

vision revamp. It now positions itself to play the

pivotal role as a leader in Thai Traditional Massage

that is recognised widely. Their massage therapies

enhanced with traditional methods and combined with

new scientific-based products with new stress-busting

According to Dr Leon, Thai Odyssey has also

been advancing their spa products with efficacious

ingredients and products from South East Asia to sales

online and at their outlets. The most talked about

progress and excitement is Thai Odyssey’s IPO launch

in the very near future.

To stay current on spa and wellness trends and

customer behaviour, Dr Leon shares that the advent

of a global network system has helped the brand

tremendously. With a presence in the cyber world,

the brand is constantly kept up-to-date with the latest

development. Says Dr Leon, “I am also very fond of

traveling and enjoy myself at various spa destinations

when visiting different countries. While traveling, I get

to meet many travellers from different backgrounds and

am able to learn about their spa preferences. It is this

first-hand knowledge that has also helped us to enhance

our understanding of the spa and wellness trend, at the

same time, learning about customers’ expectations.”

Since starting Thai Odyssey, Dr Leon has won

many awards for the company and himself. Some of his

proudest moments have included receiving the awards

for Best Spa Entrepreneurship Award, Best Leadership

Award and one year ago, he finally received his

Honorary Doctorate degree in Innovation and Spa

Entrepreneurship.

Growing up in an ordinary family, Dr Leon

faced a lot of hardships. However, he was fortunate

to have mentors in his life that helped him along the

way including his mentor, Tropicana’s founder Tan

Sri Dato’ Danny Tan. “I am forever indebted and

grateful to him for constantly ingraining in me all the

possibilities that life could offer. That could be one of

the reasons why I remained steadfast and committed till

this day,” says Dr Leon humbly.

A Novel Read

Another of the Time Well Shared activities included

a reading project of The Little Prince by Antoine de

Saint-Exupéry. No other novel has been translated into

as many languages and read by as many people from

different countries and cultural backgrounds as “The

Little Prince”. This famous literary work follows a young

prince on his journey to different planets, addressing

themes such as loneliness, isolation, friendship, and love.

During these challenging times, the story is a powerful

reminder that the best things in life are the simplest ones

and that real wealth is caring for and giving to others.

Channelling this spirit, IWC brand ambassadors

came together to read from the book. The series was

kicked off by Indian actress Sonam Kapoor and joined

by Lebanese-British TV presenter Raya Abirached,

Tunisian actress Hend Sabri, Italian actor Pierfrancesco

Favino, and Chinese actor Zhang Ruo Yun. The original

illustrations from Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, including

some never-before-shown works, accompanied the

readings.

All contributions are accompanied by a button

to make voluntary donations in support of Save The

Children, which aims to strengthen its programmes that

protect children and families in countries that are hit by

the virus, increase support for national health systems,

and raise awareness among parents and caregivers on

how to provide psychosocial support to children.

In just a matter of weeks, our world has started to look like

a vastly different place. Something that may have seemed

like a faraway problem is now on our Malaysian shores

as rising coronavirus infections lead to indefinite school

closures, mandates to work from home, travel restrictions,

cancellation of major sports and entertainment events to

empty shopping malls and streets.

Malaysia’s health experts and government officials have taken

tremendous steps and initiatives to ensure that we practice social

distancing in order to flatten the curve of the outbreak. This is

to prevent a surge of infected patients that might overwhelm our

hospitals. In other words, that means we stay at home and limit

nearly all in-person social interactions.

As we fight the COVID-19 outbreak; doctors, nurses and

healthcare personnel have become the unwitting heroes of this

global pandemic. More than 5.9 million people worldwide, from

Singapore to Mauritius to New York, have been infected with this

pandemic and have claimed more than 377, 600 lives. On a positive

side, more than 2.9 million people worldwide have also recovered.

At The Frontlines

Working round the clock to curb the spread of this

pandemic, healthcare frontliners are dealing with a huge

influx of patients, while also facing a lack of equipment in

many cases and the fear of becoming infected themselves.

Often, they face heartbreaking decisions while treating

their patients.

Many of these health frontliners have left their

loved ones at home and have given up time and comfort

to be at the frontlines. The sincere dedication shown by

every member of the health workforce in the face of this

overwhelming pandemic is nothing short of amazing.

Those at Malaysia’s Ministry of Health also

continue to do everything they can to ensure the safety of

all Malaysians. In turn, every Malaysian has a role to play

in battling this pandemic, that is to help flatten the curve

by staying at home and limiting social interactions.

By flattening the curve, we avoid overwhelming our

medical professionals with a surge of cases, buying time

for researchers to seek treatments and develop vaccines,

and for hospitals and health facilities to build up testing

procedures and treatment capacity to be in place.

A National Hero

The nation calls him a national hero, but for Health

Ministry director-general Datuk Seri Dr Noor Hisham

Abdullah, the honour goes to all the healthcare workers

and frontliners battling COVID-19 in the country, noting

they have been “nothing short of amazing”. The health

workforce and frontliners, both in the public and private

sector, have stepped up and are giving their all in trying

to combat COVID-19, he shared during the ministry’s

daily press briefings.

Recently China Global TV Network listed Datuk

Dr Noor as one of the three leading doctors in the

world leading the fight to stop the spread of COVID-19,

alongside America’s Dr Anthony Fauci and New

Zealand’s Dr Ashley Bloomfield. These three medical

professionals have received heaps of praise over the past

weeks and months for being a “calming” and “trustable”

source of information and facts during the pandemic to

their countrymen.

belies its strength with Rittenhouse rye whisky, soursop, honey

flower tea and passion fruit foam providing quite a punch.

“At Copper, we take pride in crafting our cocktails using

Rolls Royce Dawn Aero

Cowling is perhaps the

ultimate in open-top

motoring. Named after

the ultra-rare 1950s Silver Dawn, its current

contemporary aesthetic appeals to a niche

group of successful and dynamic individuals

of the world.

To add yet more stunning aspects and

exclusivity to this already remarkable motor

car, the Rolls-Royce Bespoke Collective of

designers, engineers and craftspeople created

a removable Aero Cowling. This modern and

meticulously constructed piece converts the

aesthetic of Dawn into a two-seat roadsterstyle

motor car with an extended tonneau

cover sitting atop the two rear seats. This

alters the Dawn’s person by creating a highershouldered

silhouette and heightens its sense

of dynamic intent.

You’ll be happy to note that the Aero

Cowling, which can be fitted and removed

at your discretion, encloses the rear seats

beneath a beautifully hand-made cover, with

two cowls rising from the leading edge of the

tonneau area, to a point just behind each front

seat headrest. The form of the cowls were

precisely sculpted to funnel air gracefully over

the cabin, so to enhance driver comfort.


THE DRIVE

Each cowl is equipped with a pair of

lockable leather-lined storage compartments

for personal effects, while the cover itself is

made of carbon fibre and aluminium. This

choice of materials makes Aero Cowling

incredibly light yet strong. The lids of the

cowls are swathed in the finest Rolls-Royce

leather, perfectly matching the interior of the

car as commissioned by the owner.

Luxury Refined

The Aero Cowling is not designed to simply

transform the appearance of the Dawn,

but to complement it. Bespoke canvases for

colour and detail atop the cowl lids allow for

a harmonious flow of colour between motor

car and tonneau.

Originally presented at the 2018 Geneva

Motor Show, the first Dawn Aero Cowling

was matched perfectly with the Cassiopeia

Silver and Casden Tan colour scheme of the

motor car it adorned. The central spine was

finished in exposed carbon fibre, showcasing

its lightweight structure, with a weave bookmatched

to a contemporary chevron graphic.

This intricately detailed spine harmoniously

ran down the centre of the car, through the

centre console and onto the dashboard.

Since its launch, Aero Cowling has

enhanced many Bespoke commissions. One

of the first was the Bayside Dawn Aero

Cowling, commissioned by a customer in

Yokohama, Japan, to pay tribute to his

seafaring home city. It matched cutting-edge

technical fibre with open-pore teak Canadel

panelling, drawing inspiration from yacht

decking. The Aero Cowling’s colourway

evoked blue seas and white sails in the finest

traditions of Yokohama Bay.

Most recently, Aero Cowling adorned

Dawn Silver Bullet, revealed earlier this

year. Inspired by rare, glamorous and rakish

roadsters of the 1920s, this motor car’s

tonneau was finished with an ultra-metallic

silver-painted central spine and a vapourblasted

titanium windbreak, etched with the

Silver Bullet nameplate and silhouette.

Aero Cowling is able to amplify a more

striking aesthetic as well as elegantly contribute

to its form. Arguably, its boldest appearance

was part of the marque’s 2019 Pebble Beach

Collection where it was incorporated into a

Dawn Black Badge finished in striking coral.

This new pastel colour carried over to the

Aero Cowling itself, creating an appearance

reminiscent of the Speedster two-seater

body style so closely associated with the US’s

western seaboard.

Any golfer at TGCR will tell you that they would have chanced upon

some interesting birds or animals that they don’t usually see anywhere

else while playing golf. This is because the golf club is home to a variety

of birds and mammals such as the Asian Glossy Starling, Brahminy

Kite, Brown Shrike and Forest Kingfisher to name a few. Long Tailed

Macaque, Asian Water Monitor Lizard, Common Tree Shrew are also

a common sight here. All of these resident animals help to balance the

ecosystem around the golf course where they co-exist with the natural

surroundings.

Further marvels of birds that can be found at TGCR are the Asian

Openbill Storks. These birds get their name from the natural open space

between the curved inner surfaces of the mandibles in adults where the gap

between the mandibles increases with age. Openbills are migratory birds

which generally move between South Asian countries (India, Sri Lanka,

Bangladesh) and Southeast Asian countries (Myanmar and Thailand).

Meanwhile golfers can sometimes catch sight of the Painted Storks with their distinctive feathers in their natural habitat. Predominately

non-migratory and making only local movements, Painted Storks forage in flocks in shallow waters along rivers or lakes. They immerse their

half open beaks in water and sweep them from side to side and snap up their prey of small fish that they sense by touch. As they wade along

they also stir the water with their feet to flush hiding fish. They nest colonially in trees, often along with other water birds.

This course also includes a number of water features as a part of the hazards golfers have to negotiate. These water features are

often fringed by areas of wet grassland and it attracts a variety of animals and other water birds. Birds will breed in the vegetation along

the edges of these features, which support rich insect assemblages fed on by the birds. Characteristic birds found in such areas include

Storks and Kingfishers.

TGCR has started a Wetland Environment project in the golf course recently and according to Herman Tan, Executive Director of

TGCR, “The project started in the resort at the 3 rd Lake at the East Course 1, 3 rd Lake at the East Course 2 and 2 nd Lake at the West Course

3 since early May and this will be replicated throughout the 27-hole golf course. These wetlands will help control floods and they are vital to

the ecosystems providing a habitat for animals and plants. We also have a variety of water plants comprising of Typha Angustifolia, Scirpus

Validus, Hanguana Malayana and Lepironia Articulata incorporated into the ponds together with fishes such as Tilapia, Haruan and Grass

Carp to nurture the biodiversity of the ponds. Other than the wetlands, we are also planning to construct and erect bird houses at strategic

locations to attract more birds to the golf course. These bird houses will provide nesting and roosting opportunity for various types of birds

and in a way, it is also an environmentally sound way to lower the insect population which will benefit everyone in the area.”

At TGCR, the aim is to exist with nature and provide a safe haven for the habitats while preserving the harmony of its surroundings.
