EDITOR’S NOTE
Shape
of You
This month, the focus is on fashion,
where magazines around the world
dedicate “the September issue” to
this industry and its players within
its pages. Globally, the industry is
valued to be around USD1.78 trillion,
according to Common Objective, a fashion industry
networking and resource entity that places emphasis
on sustainable fashion. While not in the top ten of the
biggest or most lucrative industry in the world, it still has
quite a big share of the pie with a high value. This could
be due to the fact that it is one of the industries that is
“close to people’s heart,” according to a 2018 survey on
public perception of companies, conducted by Caliber,
a company that measures and manages a corporation’s
image through its reputation analysis programs.
In fact, Apparel & Fashion came in at number 5,
being beaten by toys and stationary; retail – food; food
and beverage; and medical devices. It seems that fashion
fulfils two needs, other than the basic need for clothing.
These needs would be the need to fit in and be accepted by
society, as well as the need to appear unique and individual.
The needs seem to be at opposite ends of the pole, but it
actually talks to the need for people to belong to a tribe, be
it one where all the members conform or one that values
differentness. That’s how fashion speaks to consumers – by
giving them an avenue to express their preferences through
clothing.
In turn, fashion is how an individual speaks to other
people visually. As they say, you only get three seconds to
make a first impression. That’s how an outfit plays a role
in granting the wearer certain “powers.” While not in the
superhero sense, many people rely on their favourite piece
of clothing or personal style to give them confidence –
or luck! You have power-dressing in the boardroom, or a
special detail on a dress that colours your personality. Before
you can show who you are through your actions, you give an
idea through your fashion. It can seem like it’s a superficial
world sometimes, but if you plan to succeed in it, it pays to
play by the rules – at least when it suits you.
Remember, though, that fashion should make you feel
good, but not make others feel bad. It’s a finicky situation
when it comes to personal preferences, but what’s important
is that there should never be the need to judge others based
on what they’re wearing, while you yourself as a dapper
sartorialist or stylish fashionista never lose sight of who you
are on the inside.
Have fun with fashion – it can be a reprieve during
these trying times. Take care, stay safe, and see you next
time!

The Last Night of The Proms
17 July – 12 September 2020
London, UK
Available on BBC Radio 3, BBC Four and BBC iPlayer
While the world waits, full of hope, for COVID-19 vaccine, some
seek solace in the healing powers of classical music. An eight-week
remedy concocted by top-notch musicians, the Last Night of the Proms
sets out to soothe unnerved souls with a plethora of delightful solo
and ensemble performances. Due to the pandemic still in full force,
the world’s longest running classical music concert series has been
split into six weeks of concerts from the archives and two weeks of
live performances broadcasting straight from the Royal Albert Hall.
The programme opened with a special First Night commission to mark
the 250 th anniversary of Beethoven’s birth, featuring a new mash-up
of Beethoven’s nine symphonies played by a Grand Virtual Orchestra
made up of 350 musicians from all BBC orchestras.

have stayed true to its name? If you happen to be able to be in Paris
on 3 October, you’ll get to witness for yourself one day in Paris where
almost the entire city is filled with amazing art installations, exhibitions,
concert performances, interesting walking trails, staged scene sets

Really, it’s the only time you’d ever get to stay out that late in Paris with
the public transportation operating all night.
Stanley International Dragon Boat
Festival Championships

Stanley main beach, Hong Kong

The Chinese are undoubtedly fierce stalwarts of preserving
traditions. These rights of passage are observed annually, come rain
or shine. Shall the unexpected arise, it can only be delayed and not
cancelled. Which brings us to seeing this year’s Stanley Dragon Boat
Championship happening in an unlikely time when the traditionally
observed Dragon Boat Festival is already long gone and done with.
However, this doesn’t mean that it will be any less fun, as audiences
will not only still get to experience the thrill of the race, but also
enjoy the waterfront party when cheering on Hong Kong’s top
dragon boat teams.

77 th Venice Film Festival
2 September – 12 September 2020
Venice, Italy
Not only did the hours spent in lockdown lead the way to the
emergence of non-certified masterchefs and self-taught hairdressers,
a throng of movie ethusiasts were also born from it. Unsurprisingly,
people have been watching movies as a respite from reality,
provoking a deeper sense for movie appreciation. Seeing how movie
buffs are looking for new releases to catch, no doubt this year’s 77th
Venice Film Festival will be sporting more spectacles. Running from
2 to 12 September 2020, films from more than 50 countries will be
screened. Interestingly, of the 18 movies that will be competing for
the Golden Lion, eight are directed by women. Even one of the
judges, Cate Blanchett, has been named the president of the jury for
the main competition.

It’s Not Over Yet!
It’s not over yet! Legendary former squash player Datuk Nicol David
may have unexpectedly thrown us a curve ball by retiring last year, but
she is still passionately involved in Malaysia’s health scene. Recently
declared as the new face of Malaysia’s insurance giant, she will be
joining hands with AIA in empowering Malaysians to live better lives
through AIA’s key pillars of “Move well, eat well, rest well and plan
well.” More specifically, she will be advocating AIA Vitality, which is a
unique behavioral change programme that helps Malaysians hit their
personal targets in terms of health and wellness. So, while Nicol may
not be on the world stage in squash as much as before, expect to see
more of her as she works together with AIA in promoting a healthy
lifestyle to all Malaysians.
World Class Quality
Since its first accreditation in 2018, StemLife Berhad has been recognised
for their world class mark of quality in stem cell storage and is a favourite
choice for parents to entrust their babies’ cord blood to. Recently,
they have been reconferred the AABB accreditation that assesses the
medical, technical and administrative performance of a facility, thus
demonstrating the brand’s strong medical competency and innovative
technical capabilities. This sparks good news, in particular for transplant
physicians as they can be assured that the cord blood units managed and
stored by the company are of the highest quality standards to support
successful transplants.
One-In-A-Millie-On
Apart from having a knack for acting, it seems that Millie Bobby
Brown is also talented in jewellery design. Finding fame for her
role as Eleven in TV’s Stranger Things, the British actress codesigned
with jewellery brand Pandora a few inspired pieces
as part of the new Pandora Me range. Inspired by her version
of summer, she created designs that come in the shape of a
starfish, pineapple, flamingo, ocean wave and sea turtle. To
her, they are her absolute favourite reminders of summer and
each symbol holds a fun memory or meaning. Just like summer,
seasons pass and change. Hence, if you’re planning on getting
your hands on one, better hurry as these limited edition pieces
are only available from 2 July until December 2020.

Who’s Salvatore Ferragamo?
The name ‘Salvatore Ferragamo’ often brings to mind
its premium quality, skillful craftsmanship and classy
designs, garnering intense attention since the 1930s,
with loyal fans that include Italian royalty and famous
celebrities like Elizabeth Taylor. Though much is
known about Salvatore Ferragamo the brand, little is
revealed about the man behind the shoes…until now.
Multi award-winning director, Luca Guadagnino lifts
the veil on the life of the Italian shoemaker through
this documentary of interviews, family anecdotes,
as well as the final precious words of Wanda Miletti
(Salvatore Feragamo’s wife). “Salvatore Ferragamo: The
Shoemaker of Dreams” is expected to be released during
Venice’s 77 th Film Festival..

their #EcoBeautySquadMy Campaign on 6 July, in search of a new
local star who truly represents the brand’s ethos of real, natural beauty.

about one’s best features, the opportunity of learning the techniques
and strategies to succeed in the digital world had flocks of aspiring
talents vying for the experience. From the entries, 100 participants
were shortlisted to attend a series of virtual workshops led by popular
social media personality and mentor, Venice Min before ten finalists
were selected to vye for the grand prize at a full-day finale. The winner
will receive a Grand Prize package that includes a 12-month contract
with The Face Shop as well as products and other perks worth up to
RM20,000. The contest is still ongoing, do check out The Face Shop’s

Premium Prize
It was a stroke of luck for Christine Lawder when
she played the Angpow Trophy at Tropicana Golf &
Country Resort (TGCR) earlier in February, scoring for
herself a BABAKAGU Geo Recliner Arm Chair worth
RM9,900 in the lucky draw. Last month, Christine and
her husband made a visit to the Nostaloft gallery at
Bangsar Shopping Centre (Lot S7 & S8, 2nd Floor)
where she checked out her prize and was briefed by
the gallery manager on the correct usage and care for
the arm chair’s leatherwear. BABAKAGU is known for
its Japanese craftsmanship, quality of premium natural
leather from Germany, timeless design and durability,
and this was evident during the visit where the couple
were visibly impressed with the BABAKAGU range
as well as other furniture collections at Nostaloft.
In particular, what Christine liked about her new
BABAKAGU Geo Recliner Arm Chair is how it can
lay flat at 180 degrees among its 3 adjustable settings,
and how easy it is to swivel the chair in 360 degrees.

CULTURE | MOVIES
Thrills and Spills
Non-stop thrillers and adventures await on both the big and small screens
in the coming months.
Antebellum
10 September 2020
This upcoming American film starring Janelle Monáe has been described as a horror
thriller film, so there’s definitely more than meets the eye than what you get from its trailer.
In the movie, Monáe is successful author Veronica Henley - happily married and mother to
a beautiful daughter. Veronica’s picture-perfect life gets disrupted when she somehow finds
herself trapped in a nightmarish reality during the time of the Underground Railroad,
when African American slaves escaped their white masters via a secret network. She meets
her ancestors and must fight to survive during this dangerous time so she can go back to
her own timeline. At the same time, there are also flashes of 19 th century ghosts haunting
her in the present, prompting her to fight sinister forces in modern times as well.
Unhinged
10 September 2020
A psychological thriller, Unhinged tells
the story of single mother Rachel
following her road rage altercation
with a mentally unstable man, played
by Russell Crowe. A thriller of a
different kind, the movie explores what
could happen when drivers act based
on the frustrations and desperation one
might feel when trapped in a morning traffic jam. An innocent honk
of the horn puts Rachel’s life in danger, as she tries to evade Crowe’s
character, who seems hell bent on exacting physical revenge on
the woman who slighted him - who just happened to do the wrong
thing, in the wrong place, at the wrong time. The premise stems from
something that happens every day, but escalating into something
darker and more dangerous.
The Mortuary
Collection
12 August 2020
A young woman by the name
of Sam attends the funeral of
a small boy. While there she
approaches the old mortician
Montgomery Dark about a job
opening at the mortuary. As
the old man interviews her, she
challenges him to tell her the
scariest stories about death that
he has witnessed in his position.
He tells her four short stories - all depicted throughout the movie -
about a ‘50s housewife’s disturbing discovery, a slimy college boy in
the ‘60s who deserved what came for him, a man in the ‘70s who had
to make a tough choice about his ailing wife, and finally, the story set
in the 1980s that is somehow related to Sam, as she is horrified to
find out. As Montgomery says “The details are in the death.”
We Bare Bears:
The Movie
12 September 2020
on Cartoon Network
Make it a movie day with the kids as
the lovable bears Grizz, Ice and Panda
star in their feature-length movie, which
also features their friends Ranger Dana
Tabes, Lucy, Charlie, Nom Nom, Darrell
Zaragosa, and Chloe Park. The plot
follows the sinister villain Agent Trout’s determination in tearing apart
the “bros for life”, who - as always - have accidentally caused havoc
in the city. Agent Trout thinks the brothers should be deported to
wherever they came from, and will stop at nothing until the three are
separated and sent off. But San Francisco has always been home to
them, ever since they found each other as bear cubs. With the help of
their friends and a bunch of non-talking bears, the brotherly bears fight
for their right to stay as a family as they escape detention and try to
make their way to Canada, where acceptance is more readily offered.
Yes, the animated feature touches on some grown-up issues, explained
in a more palatable way for kids, and yet also without taking away the
fun and excitement that has garnered We Bare Bears their legion of fans.
The King’s Man
17 September 2020
This prequel to the Kingsman movies
explains how it all started. Ralph Fiennes
plays a man who must race against
time to stop history’s worst tyrants and
criminal masterminds - led by the evil
Rasputin, from starting their war that
could wipe out millions of people and
destroy humanity. As Duke of Oxford,
Fiennes creates the Kingsman, the first independent intelligence
agency, to counter this band of bad boys and girls. As if the origins
story of the Kingsman secret service isn’t exciting enough, the film
promises a rockin’ good time with the all-star cast that includes Rhys
Ifans, Djimon Honsou, Gemma Arterton, Stanley Tucci, and Aaron
Taylor-Johnson.

Life and Introspection
Whether fiction or reality, historical or fantasy, these stories remind us of the choices we
make in life, the ones we didn’t and how it affects us all.
Death In Her Hands
Ottessa Moshfegh
A dark and sharp tale of a woman who may or may not have discovered evidence of a murder whilst out on her
morning walk in the birch forest near her isolated rural home. Vesta Gul, a 72-year-old widow, finds a strange
handwritten note. “Her name was Magda,” the note says. “Nobody will ever know who killed her. It wasn’t
me. Here is her dead body.” But there is no body. The woods disclose no evidence of any crime. At first Vesta
thinks it could be a prank, but too many circumstances that seem too out-of-place in such a small town beg her
reconsideration. At times, the reader will begin to question if Vesta’s perception of reality is reliable, especially
as issues from her past start to crop up. A thriller with such an unlikely heroin that keeps getting curiouser and
curiouser, its storytelling will keep you on the edge of your seat.
To Sleep In A
Sea Of Stars
Christopher Paolini
Nine years in the making by New York
Times bestseller Christopher Paolini,
To Sleep In A Sea Of Stars isn’t just for
science fiction fans and epic space opera
lovers, but also for anyone who just
loves thrillers. Kira is the protagonist
here, a space explorer surveying an
uncolonised planet. Finding an alien relic, Kira suddenly finds herself
in a space war - one that threatens Earth and its existence. Kira and
her crew need to survive, but will they do so at the expense of their
own humanity? Readers will soon find out as they immerse themselves
in the highly detailed space world created by Paolini in this book that
detours from his usual young adult fantasies, with a fast-paced plot
that keeps you glued and rooting for its heroes.
Hollywood Park:
A Memoir
Mikel Jollet
What is a restaurant? What is a city?
What is a family? These were questions
a young Mikel Jollet asked when he, his
brother and his mother had escaped
from the Californian cult known as
the Church of Synanon. However, it
seemed that they had only escaped from
one hell into another, although there was more hope in the new hell.
With no one to help them, the broken family had to navigate poverty,
strangers, addiction, and emotional abuse. It’s a heart-wrenching
account, to think of what the young brothers had to go through as
they learned the realities of life that at that time seemed much harsher
than the nursery/orphanage they were living at when they were in the
group. Nonetheless, the memoir is not about despair, but rather brings
to light hope and optimism, as how Jollet doesn’t blame his parents for
the difficult life he had but how he chose to rise from the ashes.
The Death
of Vivek Oji
Akwaeke Emizi
The story starts at the end, with the
death of the titular character, Vivek. It
then goes back to explore Vivek’s life, as
well as the socio-political landscape of
Nigeria, where the novel is set. Issues on
ethnicity (the title character is of Indian-
Nigerian parentage), racism, religion,
politics and gender identity all come into play as the author fleshes out
the characters that are mostly the hodgepodge group of children of
Nigerwives - women of non-Nigerian origin married to Nigerians, set in
Nigeria in the 1990s, with the death of Nigerian dictator Sani Abacha
being a catalyst of a new democratic movement and new perspectives.
The novel has been described as as a gripping narrative of Emezi’s
characters, who are reflective of how differently the young and old deal
with problems in the “new Nigeria,” with a beautiful ending on how
Vivek’s mother deals with the death of her beloved child.
The Midnight Library
Matt Haig
The most oft-quoted line from Matt
Haig’s latest basically provides the gist
of the story: “Between life and death,
there is a library, and within that library
the shelves go on forever.” For there are
many books in this library, many books
for one person - depicting the lives they
could have lived differently from the
one they are currently living or had lived. Here, Nora Seed finds
herself wondering if things could have turned out differently if she
had followed a different path, chosen another career, or stayed in a
relationship. On the brink of deciding whether life is worth living
anymore, Nora untangles the confusion of life itself as she “tries
out” each book of her life and ponders which story she wants to
stay in.

Music For Musings
Tune in to these latest releases by these music mavens to
keep you company.
Limbo
Aminé
7 August 2020
folklore
Taylor Swift
24 July 2020
Unlike her previous albums, the pop star decided to
forgo any pre-release promotions, save for her cryptic
Instagram posts just 16 hours before the official
launch. She described the album as “a collection
of songs and stories that flowed like a stream of
consciousness” rising out of her imagination,
brought into life during her seclusion in times of
the pandemic. Fans quickly grew fond of the 15
track album as this symbolically marks the return
to her more retrospective and confessional style of
songwriting, predominant during the start of her
career. Songs like “August” and “Mirrorball” ignite
the feeling of bittersweet melancholy, despite the jolly
veneer of its rhythm. Meanwhile, the conversational
approach taken in the track “Exile”, featuring Bon
Iver is all but the distillation of emotions. An honest
and brutal portrayal of love in its most crooked form,
the song is easily one of her best works to date.
The Portland rapper is taking a slight
departure from his brand of lighthearted
and feel-good persona with his sophomore
album, Limbo. The decision has translated
into a more mature and polished release,
which saw collaborations with big names
such as Young Thug, Slowthai, and Vince
Staples, among others. Demonstrating his lyrical prowess in the track “Becky”,
Aminé pokes and prods the racial inequality in America by highlighting his suburban
upbringing. In its entirety, the album definitely warrants multiple listening as it may
not grow on you upon first encounter.
Dreamland
Glass Animals
7 August 2020
Dreamland is essentially the personal
narration of Glass Animal’s frontman,
Dave Bailey. Everything came to an
abrupt pause after the band had to cope
with the trauma their drummer’s neardeath
experience. Bayley, soon after,
found himself reflecting on his history
and identity. Plans for the release of this
album were then set in motion. Dreamland still straddles somewhere along the line of
glossy indietronica and psych-pop, just like their previous records. The cornerstone
here is the storytelling that lies within each track, which mainly revolves around
Bailey’s memories from his early formative years. Sneaky inclusions of snippets taken
from old home movies also lends to the album a much more personal meaning.
Midnight Sky
(Single)
Miley Cyrus
14 August 2020
At a cursory glance, it might seem
as if Miley is simply jumping on
the bandwagon of the disco revival
that is big on the airwaves today. However, upon closer inspection,
it seems that disco might just be the right vehicle for this track. The
song is all about setting the record straight regarding her divorce from
Liam Hemsworth. She declares her newfound freedom in the hardbitting
chorus, “I was born to run, I don’t belong to anyone/ Oh no, I
don’t need to be loved by you”, with much gusto and pure conviction.
The 4-minute track - which harbours her signature southern twang,
drenched in glitzy 80s synth bass lines - is the definitive proof of her
irrefutable status of ever-growing stardom.
In A Dream (EP)
Troye Sivan
21 August 2020
The young Aussie pens down
his most intimate moments in
this latest release. Although
the album relishes in teen
angst, you can’t help but to
just sway along to its strong
beats set against silky melodies. The song “Easy”, for example,
echoes euphoric beats from the 80s (think: John Hughes movies).
Meanwhile, “Take Yourself Home” - which was released as lead
single sometime during quarantine days - starts off with Troye’s
dulcet voice singing about being “tired of the city” and wanting
to go somewhere prettier and more welcoming, and it gradually
crescendos into a deliriously upbeat dance anthem.

Having
It All
How artist, entrepreneur and athlete Diong Swee Gaik lives her life to
the fullest by pursuing all of her dreams and making them work.

“Nothing is impossible!”
That is the motto that Malaysian designer, artist and illustrator Diong
Swee Gaik lives by – a mindset that propels her not only in her
art, but also as an entrepreneur, martial artist, wildlife conservation
activist, and as a mother. In fact, this middle child of three children
describes herself as a motivated individual, who will set her sights on
a goal and work hard to achieve it. It’s no wonder, then, that Swee
– as she is fondly known – is successful in all that she does, including as a member of
the Malaysian Kendo team, while running her children’s clothing business featuring
her designs, Pagoda Kingdom.
Jill of All Trades
A business owner and fashion designer; Kendo practitioner and competitor; and also an active
advocate for the conservation of the Malayan sun bear – how did Swee come about to be
involved in these three segments that are quite distinct from each other?

“My childhood has always been about art,” she explains,
“I spent most of my time after school drawing or doodling,
and when I was about 13 years old, I knew then that I wanted
to be a fashion designer.”
Swee had then taken part in a nationwide fashion design
competition during her final year of secondary school, and
made it to the semi-finals. This helped her convince her father
to send her to study fashion at the Epsom School of Arts and
Design, after which she continued at Kingston Upon Thames
University for her Bachelor of Arts (Hons) degree in Fashion
Design. “One of my most memorable life moments was when
I won the award for the coveted Best Womenswear Design in
the UK Student Graduate Awards,” she enthuses. Thanks to
the win at the final year competition for all fashion graduates
in the UK, it buoyed her confidence in the world of fashion
design, where she had creative roles in fashion brand British
India, and later with Ralph Lauren’s global sourcing office in
Singapore; as well as a role during the 1998 Commonwealth
Games.

my life, I am focused

I am there.”

“It was my time in Ralph Lauren as a research and
development specialist for Outerwear, Roughwear and
Denim that I found most valuable as it enhanced my
knowledge and exposure of what it means to develop
products of an international standard for a global
brand,” Swee says. “With all that I learned through the
years, I found it was the right time to birth my own label,
Pagoda Kingdom.”
Swee describes Pagoda Kingdom as an independent
kids clothing and lifestyle brand, for which she pulled
inspiration from eastern kingdoms and translated its rich
history, culture and natural wonders into fashinonable
pieces of clothing. She designs the hand-illustrated prints
herself, based on the diverse and beautiful elements of
the east, from the Land of the Rising Sun, to the Pearl
of the Orient and the Spice Islands, and beyond. Swee
calls this process “art to product.” You’ll find the designs
to be fresh, modern takes on the eastern elements of
our culture and nature, displaying its best features and
reminding us of its diversity.
Not only a designer and maker, Swee also puts on
the entrepreneur cap with Pagoda Kingdom. Other
than marketing her products online on her own website
(www.pagodakingdom.com), the brand is also stocked in
retail outlets such as A-Day Departmental Store at the
Intermark Kuala Lumpur, and at Mano Plus outlets in
Kuala Lumpur and Penang.
A Brand With A Heart
One would imagine that Swee would be very busy,
indeed, running her business, but she finds time to
promote a cause close to her heart – the conservation of
the Malayan sun bear.
“I wanted Pagoda Kingdom to be a brand with a
heart and not just about products,” Swee esplains. “I
wanted to be able to use my art as a vehicle to tell the
world about how important conservation is, especially
focusing on the beauty of the animals and nature of
those currently listed as ‘Vulnerable’ on the IUCN Red
List.” This includes the sun bear, the smallest bear in the
world, mainly found in Southeast Asian countries but
whose existence is threatened due to deforestation as well
as demand for its body parts and poaching of young cubs
for the pet trade.
“To learn more about the Malayan sun bear,
I had met up with the founder and CEO of the
Borneo Sun Bear Conservation Centre (BSBCC)
in Sepilok, Dr Wong Siew Te,” Swee enthuses.
“Through Pagoda Kingdom, I am able to contribute
to the conservation through the campaigns that we
create.” Most recently, Swee had sewn cotton 3-layer
face masks with 100% of sales going to BSBCC to
help the organisation as they had lost revenue from
tourism due to the Movement Control Order as a
result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Swee is currently an active member of the Womens National
Kendo team and has represented Malaysia in tournaments
including the World Kendo Championships and ASEAN
Kendo tournaments. Just August last year, she was part of the
women’s national team that won the silver medal for Malaysia
at the ASEAN Kendo Championships in Jakarta, Indonesia.
Currently, the team is training for the next World Kendo
Championships in Paris in 2021, if the situation permits.
Meanwhile, Swee has set up the Harimau Kendo Club
with two other kendo fighters who are also linked to the
Malaysian National Team. “Kendo as a sport in Malaysia is
still relatively unknown,” Swee explains. With Harimau, she
hopes to grow the art of Kendo and potentially discover and
groom new players for the national team in the coming years.
To know more about this, Swee invites anyone interested to
check out the Harimau Kendo Club Facebook page.
That Sweet Balance
Asked about her secret to balancing all the different aspects
of her life, Swee says that her focus is on quality and not
quantity. “I ensure that for time spent in each area of my life,
I am focused and committed when I am there,” she explains.
She also credits her supportive family for allowing her to keep
pursuing every dream. To relax, Swee takes the time to discover
good wines, or cooks and entertains over dinner. “I love to zone
out in good company over a good bottle of red,” she shares.
Certainly, in her home at Tropicana Golf & Country
Resort (TGCR), she can comfortably wine and dine her friends
and family, in a place where she had lived in since her 20s with
her family. “After marrying, I moved to Singapore,” Swee says,
but it seems that she knew just where to make family life upon
returning to Malaysia. “Looking for a place to purchase, it
was without hesitation that I chose my home in TGCR,” she
shares. “What I love about TGCR is that even after all these
years, the clubhouse, security and upkeep of the development
is well-managed and maintained.” Home sweet home,
indeed.

Tropical Modernism is a popular
architectural style that infuses the
separation between the inside and the
outside, where the surrounding natural
landscape plays an important role in
designing the spaces of a building.
The principal force behind this style of architecture, who
is credited to have transformed the look of Southeast
Asia, was none other than legendary architect, the late
Geoffrey Bawa.
Bawa’s works approached architecture by looking at
how the senses respond to Sri Lanka’s climate, landscape
and culture. He pays particular attention and sensitivity
to the site and its context, creating spaces that frame the
natural scenery, separated by courtyards and gardens.
His architectural language is most evident in his very first
muse, which also became his experimental laboratory
and weekend getaway place – Lunuganga Estate.
Lunuganga Estate, near the Sri Lankan coastal
resort town of Bentota, was orchestrated by Bawa into a
place of extraordinary beauty located on the banks of the
Dedduwa Lake. Bawa described his retreat as “a place of
continued varied sensations.” The estate was originally
used as a rubber plantation, where Bawa had poured
his heart and soul into transforming the house and the
gardens until what is now often touted as one of the most
beautiful gardens of the 20 th century. Somehow, Bawa
has managed to combine different garden landscaping
influences including from Italian Renaissance gardens,
English landscaping, Japanese garden art, and the water
gardens of ancient Sri Lanka. The sprawling estate is
resplendent with frangipani trees, water gardens, rice
paddies, and Greek sculptures, and offers views of the
lake and garden from the sitting areas and verandas.

“For Geoffrey Bawa, the
most beautiful thing about
Lunuganga was “the effect
of sunlight filtering through
the leaves.”
A rustic garden setting just outside what is now the hotel’s lobby
Full length glass walls bring the outside in, where modern streamlined sitting chairs juxtapose against a
large poured cement coffee table with palm frond imprints
Playing with the different sizes and textures of tropical
plants, the landscaping is a breathtaking composition of
green on green in an ever changing play of light and shadow.
Bawa had said that, for him, the most beautiful thing about
Lunuganga was “the effect of sunlight filtering through the
leaves”.
Bawa experimented a lot with spaces and structures, and
this can be seen in the bones of Lunaganga’s buildings, which
can be described as airy and inviting. The main bungalow
features large and spacious living and sitting areas, where
heavy wooden furniture sit comfortably and there’s still so
much space. This is especially so in the lofty dining rooms
with high ceilings and broad doorways that open up to the
outside. Meanwhile, along with many reading nooks, there is
also a library filled with books as well as busts. Outside, the
entrance court at Lunuganga features grand black-and-white
double doors that open to a lush courtyard. It was originally
the back entrance, converted after a remodeling by Bawa,
demonstrating how a home’s element does not need to be tied
to its original purpose if its new role serves better.

Meanwhile, the space known as the Gallery was designed
for the contemplation of nature. The floor to ceiling glass
walls are the perfect example of indoor and outdoor spaces
spilling into each other. Even the furniture had wheels to
make it easy to move from inside to outside.
Across the main building, in the Sandela Pavilion – a
spot from where Bawa could see visitors arriving at the South
Terrace stairs, while a look out the window affords a view of
the main gate – painted sliding doors open to an airy space
with a mezzanine floor. Bawa had built the structure from
salvaged parts in 1982 while he had two vast projects under
way – Sri Lanka’s parliament building and Ruhuna University.
It was said that the Sandela Pavilion was intended to serve as
an office for Bawa and his assistants to work over weekends.
Evidently, Bawa’s passion for architecture was poured
into Lunuganga, which he worked on for over 40 years. It
was the architecture of pleasure for him, by him and up to
each individual’s interpretation and appreciation. It is indeed
a magical garden retreat – a treasured and charming piece
in the history of Sri Lanka and Southeast Asian architecture.

Work/Life

UFOU UPON desk
The new norm the world is living in has
necessitated working from home for a
majority of professional workers around the
world. As they say, the show must go on and
if this means ensuring that things get done
despite the usual household distractions, so
be it. However, as work life blends into home life, there is a
need for work equipment to function as efficiently as possible
to ensure a smooth workflow. This extends to work furniture,
which ideally should be ergonomic, indicates the separation
between “office” and abode, while also harmonising with your
home interior décor.
In 2018, original furniture brand UFOU was founded in
Shanghai with a focus on providing pieces that incorporate
both form and function, befitting the stylish home office. The
hero of UFOU’s collection would be the UFOU UPON sitto-stand
desk. Designed to fit any kind of working style and
personal preferences, the desk is perfect for the work-at-home
professional – or for anyone averse to the standard issue
workstation, for that matter.
The UFOU UPON desk is any design-lover’s perfect
desk. While not exactly a minimalist desk, its clean lines are
calming and helps set the mood for work. Rounded corners
give assurance of safety, while wooden trimmings add subtle
style. The wide base – in lieu of legs – help ensure stability,
which is important when you factor in the different heights and
angles the desk can be adjusted to. With a height range from
65cm to 130cm, the desk is adjustable for the needs of most
users, including children, and for when you prefer working
while standing up instead of being seated. Meanwhile, the
tilting mechanism that allows the surface to swivel up to
a 35 degrees angle makes for more comfortable positions
for different uses such as reading, drawing or drafting, and
painting. Storage compartments are cleverly incorporated
into the design, keeping lines flushed when the compartments
are closed.

Sensible Storage
The FITIN HELIX storage looks like just any other pretty
storage accesory at a glance – it’s definitely easy on the eyes
with it streamlined look and spaceship-inspired compartments
. However, the design is actually quite brilliant. This is not one
of those shelves or set of drawers that you shove up against
a wall. The castors play a vital role as the FITIN HELIX is
meant to be accessed from the front and back, so to speak.
One side has cubby holes for storing items used on a daily
basis, kept within easy reach. Turn around the FITIN HELIX
and you have your series of drawers for keeping items out of
sight. Of course, its top surface is useful for placing decorative
items, a table-top lamp, coffee, or just anything that needs a
temporary holding spot.

Space Saver
Mess is an unfortunate effect of bringing work home,
especially when you have to refer to various files and folders
that can get all over the place. A dedicated storage area is ideal
for keeping things organised, but space might be an issue with
big and bulky shelves, especially if you’ve never planned for a
home office before. This issue is something that has been aptly
addressed in the FITIN ROLLIN storage unit. Slim, with a
shallow depth, the unit lines up against the wall without taking
too much space while its rolling tambour door requires no
additional swing allowance. As the doors roll all the way back,
stored items can also be accessed from the sides – much like
an open shelf, but with doors that hide away all the clutter
when need be.
Sleek and Slender Seat
The UFOU collection becomes complete with the JOYIN
TAIL task chair, designed specifically for long hours in front
of the work desk. Special attention has been given to ensure
the chair provides firm lumbar and spinal support with a
flexible backrest, while seat height is easily adjustable for the
perfect position. Certainly, a harmonious home environment
is essential when working from home. Having the right
furniture and equipment goes a long way in ensuring a worklife
balance when both take place in the same space.
For more details and information, go to www.ufou.com.
UFOU will be available in Malaysia in 2021.

Emotional Juxtaposition of Time & Space – Green (2020), Acrylic on canvas
As it is with most forms of art, a
huge bulk of it is derived from
inspiration, drawn from events
close to the artists’ inner and outer
self. There is an immeasurable
sense of solace that we find within
art, as it is arguably the most tangible form of our
feelings and emotions - a universal language that
sends across a message for when words aren’t enough.
This is one notion that Malaysian artist, Peisy
Ting is bringing forth with “Transcendence – A
Visual Exploration of Self ”, happening from 3 August
to 27 September 2020. The recent unprecedented
events that have transpired worldwide was the cue
for the self-taught artist to explore the boundaries
of introspection and emotion in its most raw state,
providing viewers with a kaleidoscopic journey that
encompasses all spectrums of the human psyche.
Peisy’s Emotional Juxtaposition of Time & Space
comprises three separate pieces; Blue, Green and Red.
The trio of artwork unloads the indefinite anxieties
and fears that stem from the pandemic outbreak. It
invites viewers to dive headfirst into the agonising
truth of being denied of living a care-free life as we
retreat into isolation within the confines of our own
spaces. Understandably, this has spawned feelings of
unrest and anger. However, we are also presented an
opportunity to look into our inner psyche, thus laying
the perfect foundation for introspection that we often
take for granted.

Meanwhile, Ting’s earlier artwork Piercing Solitude strips
viewers of their guard and reveals the shared vulnerability
towards cold loneliness. It is the visual representation of
a human’s instinct to retreat when faced with an unseen
adversary. Then, there is the bright stroke which pierces
the dark orb symbolising optimism, akin to a bolt of light
that compels us to stride forward amidst the general unrest.
Although this piece was created in 2019, the timing couldn’t
have been more perfect for it to be exhibited now, as the
artwork perfectly mirrors our attempt to detach from the
untimely disorder of the surroundings.
Another earlier artwork, Tings’s Separation Consciousness
posits the notion of being at a crossroads, in which the
decision that one makes will inadvertently impact themselves
and others as well. It begs viewers to question what they stand
for and how the decision that they make will ultimately have
a ripple effect on those around them. The protruding yellow
line implies two separate streams of consciousness, no longer
in a union. This circles back to how our actions (or inaction)
during these trying times would affect the community as a
whole - whether it’s disruptive or otherwise.
Arresting Visuals
In its entirety, “Transcendence – A Visual Exploration of
Self ” is a collection of 24 paintings that serves as a cautionary
tale against complacency, beckoning its viewers to confront
the unsettling and often uncomfortable truth in life. Her
ingenuity permeates through the canvas, as her daring choices
in commissioning dark colours to her painting evokes myriad
emotions that viewers simply can’t brush aside.

Leica M10-R
If you’ve been thinking about getting a Leica camera for some time, now would be best with the release of the new Leica M10-R. In its latest
iteration, the M10-R offers a resolution of over 40 megapixels, opening a whole new world of photography opportunities compared to the
Leica M10 and others in the same consumer compact camera category. However, with the ability to capture photographs in the most minute of
details, camera and photography enthusiasts will be delighted to know that image noise is still significantly reduced at output. When it comes to
technical details, a base sensitivity of ISO 100 that goes up all the way to ISO 50000 – with maximum exposure time of 16 minutes – certainly
allows for more experimentation in capturing images. Think richly detailed night shots, highly contrasting architectural shots and beautifully
rendered portraitures. With the right gear such as the Leica M10-R in hand, you’ll be sure that the memories captured will always show those
moments in the best light possible.
Oppo Reno 4 Pro
Three things stand out with the Oppo Reno 4 Pro. Firstly, even
though its frosted back is plastic and not glass, it doesn’t feel
any less premium. Then you’ll notice the curved AMOLED
display, which is a nice touch that gives it that designer edge.
Finally, you’ll be delighted at how lightweight and slim it
is, with a thickness of 7.7mm, but still feels quite solid. Of
course, the performance is just as impressive, for what good is
a clear and smooth LED screen without smooth movement of
graphics? The Reno 4 Pro has a 90Hz refresh rate and 180Hz
touch sampling rate for seamless scrolling action as well as
enjoyable viewing on the phone, and this is complemented by
the phone’s TUV Rheinland Full Care Display certification
that protects your eyes. The Snapdragon 720G processor
allows for the best performance possible for the Reno 4 Pro,
thus multitasking on the device is basically a breeze. Lastly,
with a battery life that stretches usage to the max (the release
boasts of chatting on Whatsapp for 1.5 hours on 5% battery
life), this is one phone that lets you enjoy life on the go.

face shields to KPJ Damansara Specialist Hospital. Tropicana
Corporation is always looking for ways to give back to the
community and this is one way of achieving it under their yearly
Corporate Social Responsibility initiatives. Together with wellness
operator Thai Odyssey, the two companies combined their
resources to have members of their workforce produce handmade
face shields for KPJ Damansara. Guided by specifications from
the hospital, the special team were able to deliver a total of 3,000
units of face shields that were put together using items like sponge
sheets, binding covers and elastic bands.
Speaking at an event to present the boxes of Tropicana-
Thai Odyssey face shields, the Chief Executive Officer from
KPJ Damansara, Puan Fawziah Muhammad said, “The great
community support from companies like yours is of tremendous
comfort to us in our daily roles caring for our patients. This
donation from Tropicana and Thai Odyssey is much appreciated
to keep our patients and families safe.”
Presenting the face shields to Puan Fawziah were Encik Mohd
Zapi Abdullah, Executive Director of Tropicana, and Dr Leon
Chuah, Group Managing Director of Thai Odyssey.
This isn’t the first time Tropicana has donated towards the
fight against COVID-19. Before this, the corporation donated
RM1.5 million worth of medical equipment and supplies to
hospitals and health departments identified by the Ministry of
Health Malaysia as well as 200,000 pieces of face masks to the
Selangor state government to be distributed to frontline personnel.
Meanwhile, Thai Odyssey had also gifted vouchers for free
massages to all frontliners as appreciation for their sacrifice and
dedication.

Dream House
or
Investment
What to look out for when you’re buying your forever home compared to
buying a property to be rented out.
Text by Alea Adzhar

TM | SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2020
46
Generally, property investment is one of
the biggest financial commitments one
could have, so it’s no surprise that there
are many factors to be considered before
purchasing a house. Furthermore, the
criteria for choosing a house to stay in
should be different than what to consider when investing in
a property for rental. Knowing what to look for when househunting
will serve you well when you choose the right house
for its intended purpose.
Purchasing Your Dream House
When looking for a home to settle down with your family,
the size of the house is a vital characteristic to consider as it
needs to be able to accommodate your growing family. You
may only be a family of three when you first buy the house
but your family might grow along the way. Thus, it’s best to
consider the number of bedrooms and bathrooms a house
has, along with how the needs and activities of the household
could be like in the future.
Besides that, since the house is a long-term investment,
space is an important point to factor in if you’re planning
to host many family events and occassions over the years.
Birthday parties and such can be a bit of a tight squeeze
without ample floor room for guests to mingle around or find
a spot to sit when socialising. With that in mind, you might
also want to weigh the option of getting a landed property
with its own garden compared to a condominium equipped
with outdoor facilities where you can entertain guests.
Another point to consider is if you have or will have a
parent or parents staying with you. With more families opting
to live together with extended family members under one
roof, multi-generational homes have become a growing trend
among property developers, with many offering houses with
ample room for the young and the old. For such a family,
other than space, you should also take into account the
neighbourhood the house is in. A good location within a nice
and friendly community would be ideal, especially in an area
where residential and commercial elements merge to create
townships with strategic connections.
47 SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2020 | TM
PROPERTY INVESTMENT
Investing In A House For Rental
If you are planning to purchase a house for rental purposes,
smaller homes and apartments might be more suitable for
various reasons. One of the main reasons is that it is usually
less challenging to find tenants for a smaller unit as the rental
cost would be lower compared to a landed house or a larger
property. This would be ideal for potential tenants who might
just be starting their career or family life and are looking for
somewhere temporary to live in before they themselves decide
to buy a house. Tenants could also be transplants from another
state looking to stay in the area for only a few years following a
career move or decision to study at a neaby institute of higher
education, and thus are looking to rent rather than buy.
With an idea of what tenants are for, bear in mind
that location is key as it is easier to rent out a house that is
located near public transportation services, offices, education
centres, and other amenities including supermarkets. The
amenities that are available at the property will also be a
TM | SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2020
48
major consideration for would-be tenants. The trade-off for
not living in a bigger house with a garden or lawn would be
the standard condominium facilities such as a swimming pool,
tennis court, gymnasium, BBQ area, and halls that can be
rented for special occassions. Such conveniences will definitely
be a big draw for renters looking for an all-in-one residential
property to be their home for a few years.
Extra Consideration
Don’t forget about maintenance! You will need to take into
account a list of potential maintenance items unless you are
purchasing a totally new construction. In order to turn your
house into your home sweet home, there might be repairs
or replacements required. Some maintenance may be time
consuming and become a financial burden for you so these
need to be identified so you won’t be taken by surprise and be
disrupted finance-wise.
In your quest for the right house whether for you or your
tenants, remember to stay true to your priorities. Overall,
the location, size, facilities, and amenities will contribute to
either your enjoyment of your own home in the long run,
or its rentability over the years. During the hunting process,
remember to always seek for knowledge, advice and guidance
from your mortgage experts, if possible. When you understand
what you need from a home for the family or for rent, you’ll
be able to make the right decision in which property to get.

The Dalit Bay Golf & Country Club, Tuaran,
Sabah beckons you to uncover its hidden
charms. Nestled between the border of
Tambalang and Mengkabong rivers, there
is more to this golf course than meets the
eye.
Enclosed within the 400 acres of the expansive Shangri-
La’s Rasa Ria Resort & Spa, Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, the golf
course is not without its distinctive features. In fact, much
of the championship golf course’s footprint was carved to
complement the teeming and refreshing greenery of Sabah’s
natural landscape. There is no shortage of panoramic views
here as the 18-hole golf course - designed by premiere golf
course architect, Ted Parslow - affords views of the majestic
Mount Kinabalu. It’s highly recommended that you start
your mornings early so you can immerse yourself in the
breathtaking panorama, Imagine teeing off to that!
The fairways are surrounded by dense jungle and greens
galore. So, naturally, expect to catch glimpses of wildlife such
as monkeys and monitor lizards, which could be an occasional
course hazard. Mangrove swamps also thrive within the
perimeter of the Tambalang and Mengkabong Rivers,
evoking the feeling of being one with nature. Nevertheless,
the golf course is immaculately manicured, providing an
uncompromised playing experience. You should also note that
water comes into play on this prime wetland course, with only
Holes 8 and 10 free of aquatic hazard.

THE SWING
“There’s more to this golf
course designed by Ted
Parslow than meets the eye.”
A relatively easy par 3 hole, Hole 11 is Dalit Bay’s
beautiful signature hole, with the South China Sea being the
backdrop here every which way you turn. However, it does
come with a considerable challenge where you’ll need to cut
across the Tambalang river mouth, aiming for contoured
green flanked by bunkers. Meanwhile, Hole 6 is framed by a
rocky cliff and a large bunker, so players are to proceed with
caution to make the best shot possible. Other than that, a keen
sense of accuracy and a precise shot is needed to tackle the 7 th
and 9 th Hole. The large green is nestled in the lea of a steep
jungle-clad hill, together with waste bunkers, mounds and
wetland lakes - all of which cranks up the fun and excitement
as you approach this challenging hole. As intimidating as it all
sounds, the generous fairways of Dalit Bay are still relatively
easy to tackle, so you’re welcome to hop aboard even if you
just started picking up the game.
Tee off to views of Mount Kinabalu
Rolling greens help relax the eyes
Plentiful water hazards to challenge your game
Speaking of which, you must get your hands on all the
right gears needed to hit the par. Dalit Bay Golf & Country
Club offers a fully equipped Pro Shop where you can purchase
a range of balls, gloves and headwears. Premium golf
equipment can also be rented, be it clubs, apparel or shoes.
Other facilities available at the Dalit Bay Golf & Country
Club are changing rooms with lockers, VIP changing rooms,
and even a Golfers Cooling Lounge in both male and female
locker rooms. The clubhouse has all the bells and whistles of
a 5-star resort, complete with a driving range, putting green,
chipping and bunker practice areas.

Beautiful views all around Dalit Bay
If you fancy going for a gastronomical trip while you’re
there, then be sure to head off to Golfers’ Terrace for a casual
dining experience by the fairway. The restaurant overlooks
the sprawling Dalit Bay golf course, which is a great place to
chill out before and after a round. Air-conditioned dining and
outdoor seating are available to suit your mood for the day. A
must-try is their signature dish, the Sabah Curry Laksa.

THE TIME
An Expression Of Time
Watches can say a lot about one’s personality. Here are some
timepieces that may complement your interests.

A Matter Of History
In the mid-1940s, the world witnessed
one of history’s most epic aerial conflicts
in the Battle of Britain. To commemorate
the 80th anniversary of the historic battle,
Bremont has released a special-edition
watch that pays homage to the Hawker
Hurricane, the single-seat fighter plane
that served the RAF during the war. The
40mm stainless steel timepiece features a
three-hand design with a date window at
3 o’clock, and is powered by the Bremont
Caliber BE-92AE COSC chronometercertified,
self-winding movement. The
watch exudes a vintage appeal with a
military-inspired look complete with
a complementing brown leather bund
strap. The B.O.B Hurricane is also
equipped with a solid caseback stamped
with an image of the iconic aircraft.
Space Race
For lovers of technology and space, Citizen has
produced a timepiece befitting the qualities and
precision required for space travel. The Citizen
Titanium Technology 50th Anniversary Limited
Model Satellite Wave GPS F950 is a model that is
largely inspired by the Japanese brand’s partnership
with start-up ispace Inc, developer of robotic
spacecraft technologies. Boasting a 47.5mm case
made out of Super Titanium, the watch is designed
with a multi-layered, black dial and is powered by
a highly-accurate Caliber F950 movement. Adding
to that, the GPS-enabled watch can also tap into
Citizen’s Satellite Wave system to locate itself
anywhere in the world and also sync itself with
the satellites orbiting the earth to ensure optimum
accuracy.

Classic Motoring
Swiss watchmaker, Frederique Constant continues its 17-year partnership with British
sports car maker, Austin-Healey with a brand new timepiece, which celebrates their
mutual love for mechanics and retro design. The Frederique Constant Vintage Rally
Healey Automatic Limited Edition arrives in a 40mm stainless steel case and sports
a British Racing green dial with a silver-coloured outer ring. Beating beneath the
contrasting face is an FC-303 automatic movement. The three-handed timepiece is
completed with a light brown calfskin leather strap and has a solid caseback engraved
with the iconic Austin Healey 100S NOJ 393. The model is limited to 2888 pieces,
making this a coveted piece for motoring enthusiasts.
Spy Games
A partnership between online retailer Mr.
Porter and Jaeger-LeCoultre has given birth
to this highly-stylised dress watch, which is
incidentally a tie-in with the film, The King’s
Man. The Master Ultra Thin Kingsman Knife
Limited Edition takes inspiration from a pocket
watch produced in 1907. It measures 40mm
in diameter with a case that is just 4.25mm
thick, owing to the hand-wound Caliber 849
ticking within. Notable takeaways from the
watch are the crown placed at the 12 o’clock
position, which is protected by a triangle bow
and the ivory-hued dial with retrospective
hour markers and railroad minute markers
located on the fringe. The time is marked with
tempered blue steel hands with the Kingsman
logo marked out on the caseback.

THE TIME
A Passion For Heritage
Longines looked back at its archives to deliver
this stunning piece inspired by a model from
the 1940s. The Longines Heritage Classic
Tuxedo is dressed in a 38.5mm stainless
steel case and features a simple three-hander
with small seconds layout. The dial is of
particular interest as it sports an Art Decoinspired
silver opaline centre contrast against
a black hour track. The case back bears the
old-school Longines winged hourglass logo,
which protects the Caliber L893 automatic
movement beating within. The overall
ensemble is tied together beautifully with a
black leather strap.
Love Of Craftsmanship
The Tourbillon has been around for over two centuries, but
Omega has truly redefined the complication in stunning
form with the new De Ville Tourbillon Co-Axial Master
Chronometer. Featuring a 43mm case made out of their
proprietary Sedna Gold, the timepiece is Omega’s first
Master Chronometer certified manual-winding central
Tourbillon. Offering a three-day power reserve, wearers
can admire the movement at work via the sapphire crystal
caseback. The timepiece itself is an immaculate piece of
work with a gold dial finished with a sun-brushed black
PVD finish. At the heart of the timepiece is the tourbillon
cage, featuring polished bevels made out of black titanium.

Combining its expertise in watchmaking
and connected technology, TAG Heuer
has produced a new smart watch focused
on the game of golf. The TAG Heuer

In addition to providing wearers with a
full suite of timekeeping functions, they
can also access features such as 3D course
mapping, shot and scorecard tracking
as well as a new Driving Zone feature to
improve their game. Housed in an ultralightweight
45mm black titanium case, the
timepiece sports two pushers at 2 and 4
o’ clock, a flush OLED touchscreen and
is paired with a white rubber strap with
green stitching.
Nature & Conservation
Oris has always been an advocate for ocean
conservation and its latest piece, the Oris
Carysfort Reef Limited Edition champions
the cause of coral reefs, specifically the
Coral Restoration Foundation (CRF) in
Florida. The limited edition GMT diver is
based on the Aquis GMT and features a
43.5mm steel case along with a deep blue
dial and a two-tone bezel. A Sellita-based
Oris cal. 798 movement offering a 42-hour
power powers all functions of the watch.
Paired with either a steel bracelet or orange
rubber strap, the Oris Carysfort Reef
Limited Edition also features an engraving
of coral specimens found in Carysfort Reef
on the sealed caseback.

Refresh And Clean
Combatting harsh elements from the environment is no easy feat, so scrub,
cleanse and repeat for healthier hair and skin.

Refresh The Scalp
Out of sight, out of mind – that’s practically the story of
scalp care for most of us. Here’s the thing, though: the scalp is
similar to other parts of our skin. It needs scrubbing, cleansing
and moisturising to keep hair woes at bay. If not, be prepared
to see the scalp shedding like it’s Christmas, or worse; extra
brittle strands scattering onto the floor. To make a U-turn,
get in a good sloughing session with Drunk Elephant’s T.L.C.
Happi Scalp Scrub. This miraculous brew of goodness keeps
the scalp balanced, nourished, and flake-free courtesy of its
supercharged AHA/BHA acid blend that’s also packed with
antioxidants and fatty acid-rich plant oils.
Skin Purifier
Living in an environment prone to pollution – like in the city – can wreak havoc
on the skin. As such, using a purifying mask at least twice a week is necessary for a
clean and healthy complexion. Created by Korean beauty influencer Ecom, BY
ECOM is a brand that prides itself on using the best ingredients that encourage
the skin to become healthier naturally. Their Heartleaf Purifying Mask is a rich
and creamy facial mask packed with Houttuynia, an herb that helps deliver a
pore-purifying effect, keeps sebum in check and soothes irritated skin.
Face Off
More does not necessarily equate to better. Particularly with cleansers,
harsh chemicals that guarantee a squeaky clean face actually does the
opposite by stripping the skin barrier off of its good oils. All the more
reason why gentle cleansers like Philosophy’s Nature In A Jar Gentle
Detoxifying Cleanser With Agave should be in your beauty regime.
Even though it is formulated with 95.1% natural-origin ingredients,
including the exclusive agave cryoxtract, it does more than a decent job
in detoxifying the skin and even removing makeup!

Rock ‘n Roll
It doesn’t matter if you’re living in a fast-paced or calmer
environment, stress and anxiety have its ways of creeping in.
Before it gets to you, rein it in by rolling on Skin Regimen’s
Aromatherapy Roll-On. Encased in the bottle is a mixture of
four essential oils, thoughtfully crafted to uplift and rebalance the
mind. The concoction includes oils of Juniper berries, Copahu,
Rosewood and Cedarwood, all coming together to ease nervous
tension while at the same time triggering happiness, strength and
calmness.
Not Just For The Gut
If it’s safe for the gut, it should be good for the skin, too, right? We’re talking about
prebiotics and probiotics, the good bacteria that does wonders in strengthening the gut
barrier and reducing inflammation. Since our skin is colonised by a diverse collection
of microorganisms, the same logic applies - which is why Swissline’s Cell Shock Age
Intelligence Essential Serum is good for the skin. Combined with madecassoside and
ATP (adenosine triphosphate) that balances our skin biome and sustain mechanisms, a
drop every morning and night will help skin become more soft and supple.
Fresh New Regeneration
Here’s an idea: Use human protein born from regenerative
medicine and use it to patch up damaged hair to make it
smooth, shiny and healthy. That’s exactly what Virtue, a hair
care brand with a strong foundation in biotech, has created in
their line of products intended to repair hair. Using a protein
known as Alpha Keratin 60ku ® - which has been extracted
from ethically sourced human hair, damaged areas in dry
and brittle hair is filled in with an ingredient that is more
recognised and accepted by the body. This is said to repair
hair better due to similar protein strands. The Virtue line
of hair care has just landed in Malaysia and offers a range
of shampoos, conditioners and other products to rejuvenate
and regenerate hair to make it smoother, silkier and healthier.

Pore-fessional Help
The sweltering heat is perpetual in Malaysia, rendering oily skin and
large pores a common feature. Keep the appearance of large pores
under control by exfoliating and purifying skin with Saturday Skin’s Pore
Clarifying Toner. It has 10% glycolic acid and a special Pore Control
Complex that further cleans skin after your usual cleasing routine to
ensure pores are not clogged while encouraging your skin’s natural
renewal process. Its proprietary Cha7-es Complex also helps to slough
away dullness to reveal glowing skin and help attain that K-beauty glass
skin effect. Priced at RM130 for a 125ml bottle, get this toner at Sephora.
Bury ‘em Deep
When summertime is all year round, skipping on makeup seems
tempting. Let’s face it, though: nobody has perfect skin, while at the
same time you wouldn’t want to walk around looking like a melting
makeup palette. At times like this, Burberry’s matte glow fluid is your
saving grace. Its innovative second-skin formula seamlessly blends
onto the skin, delivering undetectable, high coverage for a flawless yet
natural result. Enriched with a life-proof technology, the foundation
is heat, humidity and pollution resistant.
All About That Base
While most cushion foundations these days often garner a blasé reaction with too many
claiming to have the best coverage, Laneige breaks the mould with its all-new NEO
Cushion that shields the delicate skin from harmful rays and blue light. It contains
titanium dioxide, which is UV-resistant and often found in sunscreen, and thus helps
to delay premature ageing and prevent hyper-pigmentation. Available in two different
variations, namely the NEO Cushion Matte and NEO Cushion Glow, the former
offers a matte makeup finishing while the latter gives off a 24-hour prism-like glowy
complexion with skincare benefits.

Soothing Sun-Kissed Skin
Most of us skimp on lotion or moisturiser due to our tropical weather,
wanting to avoid piling on layers of substance onto our skin. Fortunately
there’s Philosophy’s cream-to-water body lotion with cactus fruit extract to
help us humid-weather inhabitants. Made with prickly pear fruit extract,
cactus water and shea butter, the unique lightweight cream quickly melts
into skin leaving skin feeling soft, supple and hydrated. Instantly, you’ll
see the difference between the before and after application, while you can
expect better-hydrated skin in one week.
Show Your True Colours
Did you know that long hours under the sun is not the only culprit behind colour
fading hair? Using the wrong shampoo also contributes to coloured hair losing its
vibrancy. The good news is that there is something you can do about it in the form of
Aveda’s colour conserve daily colour protect, which is the equivalent of a sunscreen
(but for hair). This leave-in treatment is 94% naturally derived, with antioxidants
from green tea to help shield against environmental stressors, and with wintergreen
as well as cinnamon oil to help protect colour from UVA/UVB damage. The cream
effectively seals in moisture and helps to preserve hair colour for up to six weeks.
Don’t Go Naked
Going bare without sunscreen is the same as asking for a burn. If
that doesn’t scare you, perhaps premature skin aging and skin cancer
does? Get top-toe-protection with REN’s Clean Screen Mineral SPF
30, which has garnered tonnes of rave reviews over its phyto-science
and mineral technology that enhances the skin’s natural processes of
protection and renewal, rather than being a short-term cover up. At
the same time, it also guards the skin from blue light and gives broad
spectrum SPF30 UVA/UVB protection.

lemon, mandarin, frangipani, jasmine, magnolia, coconut,
almond milk, musk, amber vanilla and sandalwood. That’s it –

Marc Jacobs Perfect
Eau de Parfum
The whimsical bottle design of Marc Jacob’s Perfect Eau
de Parfum is certainly eye-catching, and reminicscent of
days of youth when a mish mash of items that do not quite
go together would define the adventures of days back then.
Yes, sometimes the aesthetics alone make ample reason to
purchase a perfume, but this actually gets even better with
the creamy, fruity scent inside. Opening with top notes of
juicy rhubarb and daffodil, before settling into a soft dry
down of cedarwood and cashmeran, it’s truly perfect, and
probably like nothing you’ve ever experienced before.

When you need to feel your most glamouros self,

spicy turmeric, Indian patchouli, Sichuan pepper,
roasted tonka beans, and tolu balsam. If that’s not
hot, nothing is.

Tale Of
Two
Tailors
Two new guards in the realm of bespoke tailoring for men share about
the tricks of their trades and more.
Text by Izzat Haziq
Photos by Iskandar Sadon @ Twelveart Studio
Clothes can maketh or breaketh a
man, but still many are not aware
of the importance of a good
fit, and how one might benefit
from custom-made garments. Two
promising young designers, Joshua
Fitton and Shahrin Bahar on how bespoke tailoring
gives sartorialists a leg up in the style department.
Behind The Drapes With Joshua Fitton
Joshua believes that storytelling is the crux of his design
language. Every collection from his label, Atelier Fitton,
revolves around a predominant theme that is personal
yet universal. Take his Kuala Lumpur Fashion Week
2016 collection for example, which was an earnest
attempt to depict his descent into a spell of depression.
The juxtaposition of see-through fabrics and black
materials represented his tale of letting people in but
having a guard, and the collection garnered positive
buzz that set off a string of conversations around the
taboo topic.
Grim details aside, Joshua is in a better place now,
literally and figuratively. When he’s not busy with work,
he frequents the green outdoors as he revels in peace
and clarity. Much of his philosophy in sartorial taste
is derived from the fundamental belief that clothes
are meant for the people of locale, by taking into
consideration the microcosm of culture and everything
that entails - something he carried over from his
knowledge of Tropical Regionalism in architecture.

Joshua is inspired by an eclectic array of influences that he manages to distill into his more simplified style
You actually majored in architecture for your
degree. Could you share with us the journey
behind your transition from the architect world
into the fashion industry?
I started making t-shirts when I was still working as an
architect. I started learning about silkscreen printing to
printing on t-shirts to making actual t-shirts and then
gradually learning how to make shirts and trousers and
suits. It was very organic and painless. As an architect,
it is important to learn about new materials and new
methods of constructions, which really aids me in my
designing today. My work now is much simpler. Now all I
think about is the person’s comfort, the materials that are
used and, of course, making sure it looks good on them.
Other than tailoring and construction, in your
opinion, what sets bespoke pieces apart from
ready-to-wear or off-the-rack garments?
Aside from finishing and quality, I’d say fabric. No
tailor in his right mind is going to choose inferior fabric
to actually make something. You’re spending time
and effort to work on it, so you might as well work on
something that is worth working on. Fit is also very
important, because when you buy something off the
rack, it doesn’t necessarily fit you perfectly.
Any styling tips for men out there who are
trying to get into bespoke garments?
Start with shirts and trousers. Once you get that
right, go round the tailors and start making shirts and
trousers, find one that you like and stick to that guy.
And then, next would be shoes. Find a pair that you like
and look after them!
Three words to describe your style.
Simplified, dark and comfort.
Taking into account how the fashion industry is
constantly on the move, what is your prediction
on how the local fashion scene would stand in
the next 5 years or so?
I guess if you’re a young designer just entering the
market, it will get to you as people are going to be wary
of their spendings, with the current climate. However,
I think we’re in a way better position than the US and
Europe. I don’t think it’s going to be too bad for us.
Right now it’s tough on all of us but I think it’s going to
turn around faster than we think.
What’s next for you in the pipeline?
The next main thing is the inclusion of leather goods
into our collection. We went nuts last year by making
accessories like bags and fanny packs. I think this year
we’re going to take ourselves a bit more seriously. We
have already started making belts and corsets, which
will be worn on top of shirts. It’s all about flow and also
restrain - the flowiness of the shirt versus the cinched
waist to show restrain and control.

“What I have learned
is that design is not just
from paper to product;
rather, it involves a
360-degree system.”
Tailored To Perfection with S Bahar
The suave creative director of S Bahar, Shahrin Bahar
contextualised his label as lightweight tailoring of suits
for both men and women. By taking a mediated, holistic
approach in getting to know his clients, he ensures that
every need and desire are met when coming up with the
commissioned garment - be it business suits, wedding
pieces or even casual shirts. It’s all about personalisation
and no one does it better than Shahrin himself.
The 30-something father of two mostly draws his
creative strengths from his passion in pop culture, with
an affinity towards the music scene in particular. It’s no
surprise to see he’s becoming a favourite among local
artists such as Joe Flizzow, Altimet and Sonaone, just to
name a few. Given his enormous breadth of knowledge
and unwavering passion from having the privilege to
work with established brands abroad, his atelier has
become a conduit for locals seeking for that perfect fit.
We sat down with the wunderkind as he shared with us
the principles behind his success streak thus far.
Shahrin Bahar at his studio, where clients sometimes drop in just to hang out
You were quite lucky in the sense that you’ve
worked with big names such as Puma and
DKNY jeans during the start of your career.
Could you tell us more about what you’ve
learned from the overall experience?
What I have learned is that design is not only just from
paper to product. Rather, it involves a 360-degree
TM | SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2020
96
The style at S Bahar is all about tailoring and a good fit
system; from marketing, pricing, knowing your product
category and target market. A product can’t push itself,
it needs a whole system to generate a story for people
to understand. With big brands like these, it’s never
about the products in itself but it’s more about what
they stand for.
How does the local fashion industry differ from
that of the international scene?
We are smaller in terms of overall market, and we are
not seasonal as compared to Europe or even countries
in Asia like Hong Kong or Korea, with their winters
and summers. I also think the local market is still
young. I’m talking in the sense that we still observe the
international market for their stamp of approval rather
than championing our local industry and trusting that
the movement can be made.
You drew inspirations from the New Wave
music era for your In Hotels & Resort collection.
If you could have the chance to come up with a
collection based on an album, what would it be
and why?
If I were given a chance, I’d come up with a collection
based on Placebo’s Black Market Music. When I was given
that album, I was really innocent in terms of my design
knowledge and everything. It’s the moment in life that
I had nothing but because I was given the opportunity
to learn design, I felt that I had everything! Everytime
I listen to that album, I remember being a student and
having nothing but the hunger for everything.
You’ve been very busy lately. How do you divide
your time as a family man whilst juggling
projects that you’re currently working on?
I will plan out my week and make sure that I have
enough pockets during the day so I can spend time
with my family. For example, when I have two hours to
spare, I’d rather have lunch at home instead of having
lunch in the studio. Also, we’re currently working
on a sub-line under the S Bahar design team, which
emphasises more on suits that are made, not only for
the business world but more for casual wear. One of
the key highlights would be a packable suit where the
suit can be packed into a bag and another one would
be a washable suit. I would say it’s a very upgraded
essential, an upgraded staple if you may.
Three words to describe your style.
Tailored not formal.
Do you have any styling tips for those who are
trying to get into the world of bespoke tailoring?
Do not buy more but buy the best you can afford.

HEALTH & WELLNESS
Stay
Vigilant
We may have been successful in flattening the
COVID-19 curve, but the war has not been won
yet as Malaysians must work together to not
lose the ground we have gained.
Text by Zurien Onn
Photos from Pixabay
Many have likened the first
quarter of the year 2020
to a horror movie - literally.
Almost as soon as the
coronavirus made the news
for infecting a considerable
number of citizens in China, Japan, South Korea
and Italy, comparisons have been drawn to films
like Contagion (2011), Domain (2016), and Outbreak
(1995). Certainly in hard-hit countries like the
United States, Italy, Brazil, the United Kingdom
and Spain the effects have been devastating and
almost similar as in the movies.
Meanwhile, in Malaysia, cases spiked in April
but thanks to citizens being generally adherent
to the rules and restrictions laid out during the
Movement Control Order period, COVID-19 cases
have been kept under control for the most part.
While there was a one-day spike on 4 June when
277 cases were confirmed - the majority coming
from the Bukit Jalil Detainee Centre where illegal
immigrants were being held at, the highest number
of confirmed cases to be recorded in a day from 11
June until 6 August 2020 was only 43 patients, on
13 June. At the time of writing, the average number
of confirmed cases per day has been quite low -
about 12 cases per day.
However, the battle is far from over. We
must remain vigilant and act as if the spread of
COVID-19 is still rampant, as the virus is easily
transmissible. With the spate of new COVID-19
clusters appearing due to import cases - and a
number of irresponsible persons ignoring their
quarantine periods - anybody could be an
asymptomatic carrier of the virus and unwittingly
spread it everywhere they go. There has been a
case of a woman in China coming back from the
USA infecting her fellow condo residents just from
using the elevator - even though she took care to
ride the elevator alone and actually abided by all
quarantine requirements. This could happen here,
so let’s not let our guard down yet until a vaccine
is found and the spread of the virus can be firmly
contained.
In the meantime, it doesn’t hurt to remember
what our communal responsibilities are in
practicing the new norm. Preventive measures are
important in preventing and controlling the spread
of COVID-19, and we would do well to follow
these steps whenever we are out of the house:-
TM | SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2020

Always wear a mask
The government has made face masks mandatory for everyone going
out in public now, with these events and places requiring masks for all
attendees:
• Mosques and suraus
• Non-Muslim places of worship
• Social events
• On public transport
• At the zoo
• On the school bus or van
• Play sports or recreational activities
• Healthcare premises
• Public markets or farmers’ markets
• At the cinema or when attending live events
• Retail activities including at the grocery store, supermarkets,
malls, restaurants and laundrette
• Hair salons
• Spas, beauty centres and reflexology centres
• Family activity centres
Continue to keep your distance
One rule of the new norm that many people seem to be ignoring these
days is the social distancing rule. It is inevitable for most of us to visit
public places for any number of daily needs, be it for work, groceries,
errands, visiting the clinic - just about anything we used to do in our
daily routines. You never know if the person in front or behind you
is infected, perhaps unknowingly. Keeping your distance of at least 1
metre away from others - and asking them to do the same - is the best
way in such situations to ensure any virus is not transmitted between
individuals. If a shop owner or restaurant operator does not seem to
have social distancing markers in place and are not abiding by the
rules, it is your right to ask them to or leave the establishment and
bring your business elsewhere.
Always sanitise your hands
Again, when you’ve gone to many public places in the course of a day,
you would have gone to a place many others have been to; touched
something many others have touched; sat at a seat and table many
others sat. There is no guarantee that no asymptomatic person has been
there, or that the place has been adequately sanitised. Always have your
hand sanitiser with you and use it after leaving a public place. Also,
always remember to sanitise your hands first before touching your face.
Whenever possible, wash your hands with soap and water for 20 seconds.
Avoid going out
Unless absolutely necessary, try to avoid leaving the house. Even when
you do, for work or for school, for instance, try to go straight home
without making any stops along the way. When you do have to go to
the mall or the shops, always remember to practice the new norms.
And stay home if you’re not feeling well. Working from home is a
viable option for most workplaces nowadays and if your profession
allows for this, take advantage of this perk as much as possible.
Practicing the new norm really feels like we’re just practicing
common sense, but sometimes we might slip and let our guard down.
In these times when the COVID-19 virus can be easily spread by
just about anyone, it pays to remain vigilant and maybe a little bit
paranoid if it means we and our family stay healthy and we have a
chance of stamping out the disease eventually.

the world. It’s not stopping the cocktail creators from The Chow Kit
hotel’s The Chow Kit Kitchen & Bar from trying, though. Enter
the KL Hustle - inspired by the reputation of the neighbourhood
surrounding the hotel. However, rest assured that there’s nothing
seedy about the hotel and its bar. The first hotel by the Ormond Group, opened in
December 2019, is nothing but class.
Similarly, so is its Kitchen & Bar, along with its array of cocktails, bubbly, wines
and other inebriants. The KL Hustle might take its cue from the tough streets just
outside the hotel, but just like Chow Kit Road, it’s a symbol of the city of Kuala
Lumpur’s history, richness in diversity and the determination of its denizens. The KL
Hustle - a combination of gin, orange juice, homemade apple and vanilla liquor, red
wine vinegar and bitter - is reminiscent of the city’s melting pot of ethnicities and
culture and hits your palate like a dose of reality.
While the KL Hustle could be Kuala Lumpur’s signature drink, The Chow
Kit is undoubtedly the hotel’s. The namesake drink has a base of clean and subtle
Matusalem Platino Rum and the always-fun Aperol. This base is augmented by lemon
juice, homemade lemongrass liqueur and maple syrup, and exudes a satisfying balance
of sweet and sourness.

The Gin Dynasty
The Chow Kit cocktail drink
Other signature cocktails crafted by the team at The
Chow Kit includes illustriously named concoctions like
Fourth Concubine - probably a delightful “young wife”
with Matusalem Anejo, elderflower, lemon juice, egg
white, Fever Tree tonic and peach bitter; Swettenham’s
Sundowner, which the colonial officer might have enjoyed
overlooking the view from his verandah, appreciating
the taste of gin, Campari, homemade ginger and pink
peppercorn syrup and grapefruit soda while the sun set;
and the Golden Khersonese, a taste of lands and richness
of yore in a mix of Pineapple infused with Matusalem
Anejo, Wild Turkey whiskey, lemon juice and honey.
Meanwhile, the Robbing Kong is for those who
love how the smokiness results from the mezcal, lemon
juice, pineapple juice, syrup and bitters. Enjoy it with
a side of The Chow Kit’s version of Malaysian rojak,
the Rojak-Rojak with prawn fritters, coconut crackers,
cut pineapple, fried tempeh, smoked bean curd, boiled
egg and shredded vegetables, with a base of peanut and
pomegranate sauce at the bottom, from the kitchen part
of Kitchen & Bar.
For gin lovers, Gin Dynasty is probably your best
bet if you’re thinking of having just one (or one kind
of) cocktail the whole evening. The pour of Hendrick’s,
cucumber juice, jasmine, lime juice, egg white and bitters
is light yet punchy, and goes well when washing down
a shared plate of turmeric-marinated squid and plum
fritters with plum sauce. You’d also do well to order the
Chow Kit Nachos, with yam, cassava and sweet potato
crisps with tamarind glaze instead of the usual cheesy
sauce - a pairing that is set to bring out the brightness
of the cocktail and the gaiety of the evening. The streets
of Chow Kit come alive at night – as do the inside of its
buildings.

Since opening its doors to Malaysians slightly
under two years ago, The RuMa Hotel and
Residences has been getting quite the attention.
Famed to be Kuala Lumpur’s only member
of The Leading Hotels of the World, it is also
making heads turn thanks to their world-class
eatery, ATAS, The RuMa’s modern Malaysian eatery.
Situated up the hotel’s grand stairwell and onto the
mezzanine floor, ATAS is the place where guests can embark
on a culinary journey through the Malaysian Peninsula.
Executive Chef Tyson Gee has created a unique menu
presenting dishes that showcase the best of locally grown
produce and heirloom ingredients, richly flavoured with local
herbs and spices.
“At The RuMa, my goal isn’t to deconstruct classical or
traditional Malaysian dishes but to reinterpret local ingredients
and flavour profiles into something uniquely Malaysian,” said
Executive Chef Tyson Gee.
As an attestation to his carefully mastered craft, Gee
unveiled a spectacular menu compose of mouth-watering
appetisers right down to delectable desserts.
For a rather memorable start, begin with their unique Pai
Tee made of chicken liver parfait and roselle jam. Truly love
at first bite, the dish creates an inexplicable sensation as teeth
meets the crunchy wall of the Pai Tee, unearthing a melange
of tastes from the sweet roselle jam and the subtle bitterness
of the chicken liver.

As for the mains, guests can savour a range of flavourful

There is also the Lamb Shoulder prepared with Thai basil,

cleverly mixes the tastes of coriander, cultured butter, and that
unmistakable Malay scent from the green sambal.
These dishes also come with appropriate accompaniments

Driven By
Joy And Excitement
The new and improved Lamborghini Huracán EVO RWD Spyder is just
what you need to quench your thirst for speed.
Text by Izzat Haziq

TM | SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2020
110
The Lamborghini Huracán EVO
Rear-Wheel Drive Spyder is
built for those with a penchant
for all things speed. Bearing all
the hallmarks of a supercar, the
Huracán has undergone several
revisions since it’s entrance to the automotive world in
2014, with different variants that brought something
distinct to the table. Enter the Spyder, in late 2015, as
the convertible companion to one of Lamborghini’s
most successful cars ever.
The 2020 Huracán EVO RWD Spyder had its
first-ever virtual launch sometime last May, using
Augmented Reality (AR) on lamborghini.com,
amidst the ongoing pandemic outbreak. However,
that didn’t drown the excitement of die-hard fans of
the premium hot hatch. Although seemingly behind
in the spec sheets when compared to its contenders,
given in the right hands (or feet), this car undoubtedly
packs all the right punches.
Steady As It Goes
The Huracán RWD EVO Spyder is the midcycle
refresh of the Huracán Spyder line and is as
supercharged as it gets, sprinting from 0-100 km/h
acceleration in just 3.5 seconds. Hearing its naturally
aspirated V10 engine springing into action is
definitely one of those things you wouldn’t miss for
the world. When you put your pedal to the metal, the
Spyder can reach the impressive speed of 324km/h,
earning its rightful rank in the leaderboard against
other hot-rod rivals.
Compared to the AWD Huracán, driving the
RWD Spyder is substantially more enjoyable and
significantly easier as you gain more control in terms
of balancing the car with the throttle. Equipped with
a seven-speed paddle-shifted DCT transmission and
the Performance Traction Control System, this car
has been specifically tuned to allow more oversteer for
that tingle of excitement in your bones. This one-ofa-kind
convertible provides you with an unparalleled
bliss when it comes to driving satisfaction, which is
best experienced in its drop-top form, of course.
111 SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2020 | TM
THE DRIVE
For a truly immersive driving experience, the car comes
with three driving modes that are tailored to suit your mood
or personality on the road - STRADA, SPORT and CORSA.
STRADA provides stability and safety in all conditions
by minimizing rear-wheel slippage, and more proactively
managing torque delivery on low-adhesion surfaces. In
SPORT mode, you can turn it up a notch by indulging in a bit
of drifting debauchery. The Spyder skids during acceleration
as oversteer angles increase rapidly, thus you get to call the
shots when it comes to controlling and balancing the car.
Meanwhile, CORSA mode optimizes the car’s traction and
agility when exiting a corner in high-performance conditions,
maximizing dynamics and speed - just what a speed demon
needs.
Drop Dead Gorgeous
With mean lines and an even a meaner stance, this
supercharged beast commands attention from every angle
possible. Crouching low, with aggressive new front bumper
and revised front splitter, the Spyder is definitely a headturner.
Available in virtually limitless colour and trim option
through Lamborghini Ad Personam, the Spyder brings a new
definition to personalisation.
TM | SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2020
112
The convertible’s soft-top roof stows under the rear hood
in just 17 seconds, even when you’re cruising up to a speed
of 50 km/h. Available in a wide range of colour choices, the
soft-top perfectly complements the rear-wheel-drive car’s
body lines and paint job too. Of course, being a convertible,
the Spyder looks best when the top is stowed beneath the rear
deck lid. Nothing beats the feeling of the wind in your hair as
you rev up the powerful V10 engine to hear its distinct roar.
There’s plenty of cool things, too, if you were to peep
inside its cabin. The new intuitive touchscreen displays the
car’s driving data and other functions such as climate control
at a glance and is compatible with Apple Carplay. On top of
that, the console-mounted start/stop button is worthy of the
praises as well, beckoning you to unlock the engine’s hidden
power with just one touch.
Hooked On A Feeling
Make no mistake, this isn’t the EVO Spyder’s first rodeo. The
understated, but never underwhelming supercar ticks all the
right boxes for overall improvement when compared to its
predecessor. Why don’t you take her out for a spin and see
what tricks she has up her sleeve?

Famous for its enchanting beauty and breathtaking view of paddy
fields, Chiang Mai is also known as Thailand’s ‘Northern Rose’.
It is no surprise that this charming city is a favourite among
tourists due to its historical allure. According to records, Chiang
Mai was a prosperous trading centre on the route to China and
Burma.
And within this very quaint city lies an exceptional hotel, which is worth
more than just a mention. Simply named 137 Pillars House, this high-profile
venue was once the homestead of the manager of the British East Borneo
Company. In fact, the famous Louis Leonowens, the son of Anna Leonowens
from the famous tale of Anna and the King of Siam was one of the first few
people to grace the walls of this prestigious address.
Wat Gate, the area of Chiang Mai surrounding 137 Pillars House,
was formerly designated to foreigners living in the city. The traditional Thai
temple complex of multiple pagodas and living quarters is also home to Wat
Gate Khar Rnam Museum, founded by former 137 Pillars House owner Jack
Bain. The museum houses a huge collection of old Thai artefacts as well as
black and white photos of local historical figures and colonial residents who
have impacted the city throughout the years.

Today 137 Pillars House is listed as
one of the world’s Small Luxury Hotels
and provides some of the best services to its
guests. What started off as a simple traditional
Siamese home, the place has expanded and
flourished into a beautiful luxurious residence
offering opulent suites with four different
themes.
Each suite at 137 Pillars House sees
the marks of architectural historians and
conservationists who worked meticulously
to retain the integrity of the original 1889
structure of the house. Tiled verandas, cane
shades, rattan furniture and free-standing
Victorian baths are reminders of yesteryears,
blended with the modern facilities that
include outdoor garden showers, flat screen
televisions and the all-important wi-fi access.
There are also two private pools featured in
the two Louis Leonowens Suites.
With a beautifully designed landscape,
the grounds of the residence flaunt a lush
green ambience thanks to the garden-like
surroundings. To compliment the vicinity,
guest entertainment on The Lawn is regularly
scheduled, including Thai music and dancing,
cocktail parties and cultural lectures.

For gastronomic pleasures, guests have
a range of options including Jack Bain’s Bar,
The Palette, The Dining Room, or even

adventure-filled days or upon departure, the
kitchen team can also prepare gourmet picnic
baskets and light lunch boxes to-go.
The hotel also has an amazing spa
called the Nitra Spa, along with a great
swimming pool and a complete gymnasium.
For important business affairs, The Drawing
Room offers a fully modern meeting facility
supported by all necessary business centre
services. It is the ideal venue for a small
private dining function, social gatherings or

Fukuoka!
Although Japan is most celebrated for their ultra-modern

Aerial view of Fukuoka city
Fukuoka, the capital city of Fukuoka
Prefecture, is situated on the northern
shore of the Japanese island of Kyushu.
Like all Japanese capital cities, it is
meticulously well-developed and just as
organised as her bigger counterparts.
Among the more renowned tourist spots of
Fukuoka is Canal City shopping centre. As the name
suggests, the exterior design of this commercial centre
boasts a canal-like area that makes it slightly more
unique compared to your average shopping haunt.
With countless boutiques and shops, it also shares the
same vicinity as the Grand Hyatt Fukuoka, one of the
city’s most popular 5-star hotels.
The artificial canal runs right through the middle
of the five-floor entertainment complex, creating a lot
of open space. At the center of the canal is a fountain
with water shows that run every 30 minutes from
10am to 10pm. In the evenings, spectacular light and
sound performances showcasing famous Japanese
animation productions are screened on the main wall
of the Grand Hyatt Fukuoka hotel. Truly a sight to
behold, the show features amazing special effects
intertwined with bright colours and synchronised
movements of sound and water.
From Canal City, head on to Local Development
Lab in Tenjin, a one-stop shop and café that sells
Fukuoka’s best local produce, which can also be cooked
on the spot and served as authentic local meals.
For a dose of history and culture, visitors should
make their way to the Hakata Machiya Folk Museum
and witness the age-old art of weaving where skilled
craftsmen and women create an array of some of the
most beautiful pieces of cloth for daily wear and home
decoration. It is also the place where visitors can learn
how traditional local clay dolls are hand-made.
However, the main highlight of the museum
would be the archives and records kept of the famous
all-male festival and one of the biggest summer
celebrations in Fukuoka known as the Yamakasa.
The Yamakasa is a Japanese festival celebrated
from the 1st until the 15th of July in Hakata, Fukuoka.
The festival is most known for the Kakiyama, a float
that weighs around one tonne and is carried around
the city by men in loincloths as an act of float-racing.
The festival is believed to be over 770 years old and
attracts up to a million spectators each year. According
to Wikipedia, the sound of the Yamakasa has also
been selected by the Ministry of the Environment as
one of the 100 Soundscapes of Japan.

THE VACATION
Fukuoka Tower
Intricate floats paraded during Yamakasa
Apparently, the festival commemorates a Buddhist monk
who once cured people all over the city by visiting every
possible corner during a dangerous plague. These floats can
still be seen in temples near the museum.
Not far from the museum is the Kawabata Shopping
Arcade, which resembles a long huge tunnel filled with a
variety of shops and cafes selling all sorts of goods. Should
you find yourself here and hungry for a snack, try the famous
local dessert of sweet porridge with red beans flour balls,
which are often sold and served hot during the cold winters.
Venture slightly out of the Hakata area and visit the
beachfront for a look at the amazing Fukuoka Tower. Then,
from the tower area, you can take a short ferry ride to the
Marine World Uminonakamichi. Here, guests will be able to
see various performances and marine life found within the
nearby ocean.
For a bit of a breather, take a stroll along Ohori Koen
Park, a popular recreational park often frequented by the
locals as a popular play and picnic area. Not only is the park
spacious and peaceful but this is also where ruins of the ancient
Fukuoka castle is located. Now it has become a popular photo
spot for those who seek a unique visual backdrop.

Scenery at Yanagawa river
Crafting of clay dolls at the Hakata Machiya Folk Museum
About 50 minutes by high-speed train from the city area
lies the quaint town of Yanagawa. Yanagawa is extremely
popular for its beautiful river canals and the Japanese
gondolas that ferry tourists throughout the streams. Offering
vivid similarities to Venice in Italy, the gondola navigators
also sing to the passengers as they explain about the famous
landmarks.
An experience not to be missed, Yanagawa also features
some of the best landscapes around. Ideal for immortalising
picturesque moments, Yanagawa is also home to the residence
of a famous samurai, or Japanese Warlord, that now functions
as a museum and event space for weddings and big events. It
showcases a beautiful Japanese garden, perfect for those who
seek calming tranquility.
Yanagawa is also famous for their eel or Unagi dishes
cooked in a special sweet soy-sauce that tastes extremely
delicious! The dish is so famous that several restaurants
in Yanagawa have specialised in serving this delicacy with
various traditional family recipes.
Evidently, Fukuoka is severely under-rated as a holiday
destination for international travellers, as the city actually has
so much more to offer. With friendly locals, a more laid-back
atmosphere and being less busy or crowded like the other
major cities of Japan, Fukuoka is truly the perfect escape!
