EDITOR’S NOTE
The year 2020 has brought with it many surprises.
However it’s become a symbol of our courage in
braving the storms in life. It is now more pertinent than
ever to have hope, love and resilience to share that
spark of humanity with the people in our hearts, and
the people on the street.
It is with this mindset that we are calling this the Love
Issue. Our cover subject Marsha Milan Londoh talks
about the importance of family love; she calls her
Tropicana home a sanctuary where she can find bliss
after a long day at work.
That’s why we’re also featuring a splash of Tropicana
havens, from the urban jungles of KL to the warm sands
of Langkawi. These exclusive glimpses at the luxurious
homes and vacation spots will take you on a journey of
discovery with every location dear to our hearts.
This year’s Valentine’s Day is so closely intertwined
with Chinese New Year, it is literally the best of both
worlds. To put you in the mood for all things Oriental,
we shot an exclusive fashion spread featuring Amber
Chia modelling the best of Malaysian designers. We
also put together a handy Chinese horoscope guide for
you to peruse and live by.
When you flip through the pages, you’ll also notice
changes in terms of how we present our stories. We
hope that our new content and layout will prove to be
more engaging, relevant and dynamic for you, dear
reader. Ultimately, it is a labour of love from us to you.
Happy Valentine’s Day and Gong Xi Fa Cai! Take care,
stay safe and see you next time.

A DOUBLE AWARDS TRIUMPH
FOR TROPICANA
38
Tropicana Corporation Berhad recently wrapped up the past
year with a symbolic victory with not one, but two awards of
excellence in property development, marking a positive
affirmation of their triumphs over the challenges of the past
year. The awards were given by the prestigious The Edge
Malaysia Top Property Developer Awards and The
StarProperty Awards for the year of 2020.
Dion Tan, Tropicana’s Group Managing Director attributed
the company’s success to their integrated developments and
customer-focused approach, and credited the double win to
the group.
“We are truly honoured to receive these prestigious awards
from The Edge and The Star. Our success at these awards
demonstrates that Tropicana is committed to delivering
quality and innovative developments. Big thanks go to our
Tropicana Team; we couldn’t have done it without you!
Moving forward, we will continue to engage with our
customers through various platforms, specially on the digital
front, and roll out more customer-centric developments in
the future.” he shared.
The prestigious Edge Malaysia Top Property Developer
Awards 2020 judged the country’s best developers
holistically on the grounds of their qualitative and
quantitative achievements to decide on the top 10 ranking
for the nation’s Top Property Developers. Tropicana landed
the 9th spot in the coveted awards, lending more credence
to the company’s belief in creating developments that
redefine the art of living.
The StarProperty National Awards 2020 have also
announced the big win for Tropicana Corporation Berhad for
Best Overall Champion in the StarProperty All-Stars Awards
category, judged by the company’s yearly performance as
well as The Business Estate Excellence Award for
outstanding commercial development to Tropicana Gardens,
the integrated mixed development offering residential
towers and an office tower seated atop the largest
neighbourhood mall at Kota Damansara.
Moving forward, Tropicana continues to be agile, heeding the
paradigm shift. The group is now emphasising on digital
marketing initiatives and virtual events to engage its
broad-based customers. Tropicana started its digitalisation
journey years ago and will continue their digital
transformation drive. Their total land bank stood at 2,344.0
acres, with a total potential GDV of RM80.0 billion, placing
the Group in a good position to unlock the value of its
strategic landbank and deliver sustainable earnings in the
next few years.

Tropicana spread joy and cheer by hosting lunch complemented
by lively entertainment from Santa Claus and his

for the children.
Dion Tan, Tropicana’s Group Managing Director underlined
the importance of spreading Christmas cheers especially to
those affected by the pandemic this year. More so to the
underprivileged communities that are badly hit.
“If there is a time to show the true meaning of Christmas –
the spirit of giving, caring, and spreading joy – it’s this year.
For many years, we have championed our charity drive and
the spirit of giving is always close to our hearts. This year is
no exception, albeit a smaller group to adhere to the social
distancing guidelines. Led by our charity arm, the Tropicana
Foundation, our mission is to support the underprivileged
community. We believe that even a small act has a big impact.
Looking at the happy faces of the children, we are glad to
host this event,” he said.

children were Dion Tan, accompanied by Jared Ethan Ang,

FAVOURITE MUSIC: “I’ve
always loved 90s R&B

DREAM ROLE: “I already
snagged my dream role,

There were times I felt like

JAN/FEB 2021 COVER STORY
As a popular actress-singer, Marsha Milan Londoh often
works long hours on movie and TV sets. Once filming is
wrapped, she looks forward to returning to Tropicana
Golf & Country Resort, where she can finally retreat to
a sanctuary of her own. “After a long day of shooting, I
love coming home to a quiet and peaceful environment,”
muses Marsha. “The view is absolutely stunning; I
especially like the scenery from my bedroom where I can
see the lake and golf course.”
Married to businessman Mohamed Shaiful Nizam Ismail
since 2015, Marsha moved to Tropicana with her in-laws
in 2018. Their property is spacious and luxurious yet
cosy, with Moroccan and European touches evident in
the interior. Marsha considers the living room as her
favourite section of the house, as this is where a grand
piano sits. “I bought this piano with my pay cheque
and it has continued to serve me well. When inspiration
strikes, this is where I will be, composing new songs.”
Marsha also enjoys spending time in the kitchen. “I love
baking and cooking and trying out new recipes. It makes
me reminiscent of the times I spent with my mum in the
kitchen. I may not have much time to cook since I am
constantly away from home for work but whenever I do
try something new, my husband will definitely be the
first ‘victim’,” she says with a laugh.
For Marsha, singing has always been her first love. “I
started singing in public since I was three or four years
old but never took it seriously until I joined Akademi
Fantasia in 2005.
Besides her showbiz endeavours, Marsha is passionate
about giving back to society. Every year, Marsha and her
best friend Velvet Aduk collaborates on CSR projects
in the month of May. In the past, they have released
singles Sumandak Sabah and Oi Gaman to promote their
Sabahan culture.
“When Velvet and I were in the midst of producing our
new song Insan Tadau (which means One Day), we
found out about the ‘IKHLAS for Sabah’ digital donation
drive,” explains Marsha. Through the song, Marsha hopes
to encourage more people to donate to the campaign
at ikhlas.com. The initiative aims to help communities in
Sabah, which was at one point the state with the highest
cases of Covid-19 infection in the country.
44
Marsha, who is Sabahan, rose to fame after coming in
fourth in Astro’s popular reality show Akademi Fantasia
(Season 3) in 2005. She delved into acting that same
year, starring in a string of TV series including K.I.T.A,
Hotel Mania, Berita Hangit, Duri Di Hati and Benci VS
Cinta. She was also in movies like Magika (2009), 4
Madu (2009), Cun (2011) and Jwanita (2015). Marsha
was the voice of Elsa in the local version of Disney’s
Frozen and sang the blockbuster track Bebaskan (Malay
version of Let It Go).
Speaking of the pandemic, Marsha is self-reflective on
the challenging year that was 2020. “It has impacted
all of us and pushed me out of my comfort zone; I am
always learning new things online. The biggest lesson for
me is to not take things for granted and to appreciate
what we have. It’s been a year since I last saw my
parents who are in Sabah. We are constantly in touch via
WhatsApp and video calls but it’s not the same as hugs
and kisses in real life.”
Like the rest of us, Marsha has high hopes for the year
ahead. “I acted in horror thriller Rahsia which was held
back because of the pandemic; hopefully it will finally be
released in 2021. I am currently shooting drama series
Rindu Awak Separuh Nyawa which will be completed in
February. I am also hosting a new exercise programme
titled Diari Fit. So, yes, it will be a very busy year for me!
Work fulfils me and at the end of the day, I get to return
to this home which I call my haven.”

GOH-ING D.I.Y
This issue, we spoke to Tropicana homeowner Mr Goh Tien Hock on his
passion for upgrading his homes with a personal touch.
What inspires you to do these home improvements and how long does it take to complete a project?
In the beginning, I had downloaded the Pinterest App on my phone, browsing through the app I had gotten many many ideas,
actually far too many that I eventually deleted the app. For inspiration, and if it was something that I was not familiar with,
Youtube came to the rescue. I would say that 80% of what I have learned recently is from Youtube. And I’m fortunate to live in
Kuantan where land is abundant and I have a large enough car porch to play around with my woodworking. But to me, it is not
a hobby but a means to an end. If I need a bench, then I make one myself.
TROPICANA MAGAZINE
This is how it all started, a few years back when my wife was
bingeing on Korean dramas when we got the keys to our
units at Arnica, the first block at Tropicana Gardens. She had
suggested that we do a “Korean Styled” apartment, whatever
that means...... So we had engaged an interior designer to
come up with the designs. Incorporated with the design was
wainscotting as feature walls. But the price quoted by the
carpenter was over RM10,000.00 to Wainscott just four walls.
So one fine day I went on Youtube and searched on the subject.
Watched a few videos and thought to myself, I could do this
too. Over the next few days, I went sourcing for the materials
and tools needed. Paint, Glue, Wood Trim, Compressor, Circular
Saw, Pneumatic Nail Gun, Acrylic Gap Filler and Laser Level
just for this one project. The Wood Trim alone cost me about
RM1,200.00 and the rest about RM2000.00. And the bulk of
that RM2,000.00 consisted of tools that I could use for future
projects. And remember, I was quoted RM10k for just four
feature walls. What I ended up doing for my unit was six feature
walls for far less than half what I had been quoted.
I did the measuring and cutting of the Wood Trim here in
Kuantan, which took about one day, then drove it down
to Tropicana Gardens in Kota Damansara to be glued and
nailed onto the walls and then painted which took me
two days to complete, working from morning till well past
midnight alone. I had enjoyed doing it so much that I did
the same for another one of my units two weeks after that
and also for a friends unit in the same building another few
weeks after that.
And that was the start of me playing around with
woodworking. Since then I have made many other things
from wooden wall panels, jewellery boxes, valet trays, toy
chests, shoe racks, tables and chairs even. Most projects I try
to complete within one day or a maximum of three. As the
wood would be strewn all over my car porch and there would
be sawdust everywhere, so I try to complete each piece as
quickly as I can, so that I can clean the mess up after.
As a Tropicana homeowner, what elements do you wish to
see in our future properties?
From my first Tropicana property at TR1/1 to Tropics,
Tropicana Avenue, Tropicana Metropark and Tropicana
Gardens. I can see the evolution of their products. They have
not disappointed me yet and I am very happy to continue
to support Tropicana Bhd in their future projects as well. So,
for this question, I find myself having to keep up with this
evolution and innovation. And I hope to see Tropicana Bhd
continues to churn out better products with each new launch.
But to give specific points on what I hope to see, I find it
difficult as I am a satisfied customer over and over again,
with what had been given for what I have paid.

LIFE AT HOME FOR
SJIIM STUDENTS
In 2020, the Covid pandemic has affected life for everyone all over the world. With the lockdowns
and movement controls in place, students at the St Joseph’s Institution International School
Malaysia have their classes remotely from home. We asked our student, James what he thought
about his lessons and daily life during this new normal.
1. What’s your daily routine during the MCO period, and any new hobbies?
My typical routine consists of getting up and going jogging with my sister and my mom. Then, I have
my shower, get some breakfast and get ready to start Zooming. I have two lessons, and then I have
a break at 10:00 am. I tend to play in my house for a bit and then I get ready for PE. After PE, I have
another Mandarin lesson. During lunch, I like to listen to audiobooks or read my book or practise

some maths while I eat. My afternoon lessons are usually IPC, and then a short PE lesson. At about
4:30, I play on my bike or my scooter with my condo neighbour friends. I really enjoyed getting to
know them. I also had some tennis lessons, which is a new sport for me. During the MCO my family
and I spent two days painting a picture of the view from our balcony at Tropicana Grande.
2. How do you like your study experience at SJIIM?
At SJIIM, I like how the teachers treat everyone equally and make us feel like we should try
our best for them. I really appreciate all of the opportunities I have had while at school - doing
Singapore Maths competitions, going on the Penang Sports trip and singing on stage in our
production of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

I miss school! I can’t see all of my friends
and interact with them socially like I used
to before. Also, lessons at school are even
more fun than virtual school, because
at school there is more cool equipment

not everyone has access to all of those
materials at home.

soda and leave it in your shoes for a few days.
Brighten your floors.
Get rid of grime easily by using half a cup of baking
soda in a bucket of warm water. Mop and rinse clean
for a shiny new floor. This also helps with scuff marks.
Natural Shoe Polish
Believe it or not, banana peels are great for making
your shoes look shiny and new again! Here’s how:
Step 1: Peel the banana, set the peel aside.
Step 2: Rub the inside of the peel on your shoes and
watch as the scuffs disappear.
Step 3: Use a soft cloth to remove any residue.

Located in the middle of the Indian Ocean, the Maldives

W
IS FOR WONDERFUL
Through bold, innovative design,
W Kuala Lumpur immerses guests
in globally renowned cuisine and
growing appetite for playful luxury.
TEXT AND PHOTOS: William K.C. Kee
Weekend staycations at hotels are the new norm
for most people nowadays. For a different slice of
experience, one couldn’t ask for more than W Kuala
Lumpur, as yours truly found out during a recent
weekend stay. Through bold, innovative design, W
Kuala Lumpur immerses guests in the city’s wildly lush
greenery, globally renowned cuisine, centuries-old
history and growing appetite for playful luxury.
Welcome to the Jungle
The hotel combines an inexhaustible mix of old and
new colours, aromas and sounds that blend effortlessly
together in a cultural festival for the senses. A distinct
design feature at W Kuala Lumpur is the pixel – or dot.
It is cleverly integrated throughout the hotel and is
used to create a bigger picture inspired by a broader
multicultural Malaysia made up of many ethnicities.
61
JAN/FEB 2021 SOJOURN
Upon arrival, guests are welcomed by larger-than-life
traditional batik motifs, a nod to ancient artwork of the
region, blended with sleek metal accents. The city’s
abundant plant life is pulled into the space via bambooinspired
chandeliers set against an ever-changing wall
of lights, a representation of the new technology that is
enhancing the cityscape.
62
At the Welcome area, guests check in among modern
nods to the jungle. Streaming LED lights hang from
above, playfully mimicking falling rain drops, spotlights
alternate along the floor like a flowing river while the
ceiling patterns depict an artistic interpretation of water
ripples, and chandeliers show off the shapes of spinning
Malay toys known throughout the country.
Extending from the Living Room, the hotel’s grand
staircase plays with light and space in a towering
geometric cascade of steel-mirrored panels. Reflecting
the vibrant colours and native designs found throughout
the room and floors above, the staircase shifts each
guests’ view of both colour and spacial dynamics as they
move through the creatively extroverted mirroring.
EAT, PLAY, LOVE
W Kuala Lumpur features 150 stylish guest rooms
and suites, including two WOW suites and the lavish
Extreme WOW Suite (the brand’s take on the traditional
presidential suite). With a living space of over 520sqm,
the Extreme WOW Suite brings a new level of eclectic
luxury to the city. All rooms and suites embody both
TROPICANA MAGAZINE
the traditional and modern elements of the “jungle
city”, teaming signature W beds with traditional accents
like indigenous “wau” tassels commonly featured on
Malaysian kites and pixelated versions of batik designs.
The hotel brings a flawless synergy to KL’s booming,
multicultural food and drink scene with diverse beverage
and food venues. YEN offers an imperial ambience with
a contemporary take on traditional Cantonese recipes
and a wide selection of fresh seafood. The Chinese
restaurant has teamed up with art gallery curator Edith
Ho and artists Jonny Zerox and Lim Kok Hong. Dubbed
the Gung HO collective, they dressed YEN in trendy
embellishments of pop with vibrant Asian influences.
The energetic all-day dining restaurant FLOCK
showcases an extensive open kitchen where expert
chefs serve up Australian, farm-to-flock dishes featuring
organic produce and a focus on sustainable eats. For
inventive bar bites and meticulously crafted cocktails,
WOOBAR is a chic all-day social space. Especially
popular is its Hi-Tea Par Tea afternoon tea offering,
which I tried and absolutely loved. Meanwhile, the WET
Deck pool features creative concoctions, with breathtaking
views of Petronas Twin Towers as its stunning
backdrop.
GET YOUR GLOW ON
Guests looking to get pampered can treat themselves
to luxe indulgences at AWAY Spa. With five treatment
rooms, this 1,100sqm oasis offers massages and
treatments, vitality pools, chroma-therapy steam baths
and bio infrared saunas. I tried out its signature one
hour massage and found the treatment heavenly. For
those wanting to keep fit, guests can sweat it out at the
hotel’s gym which features state-of-the-art equipment
and views of the city skyline.

ONE OF ITS KIND
What makes W Kuala Lumpur
unique? General manager Christian
Metzner provides the answer.
“W Kuala Lumpur is owned by
Tropicana Corporation Berhad and
managed by Marriott International,
the world’s largest hotel company.
By being a W hotel, it allows us to
deliver a true five-star experience
in a non-traditional luxury way. I
would say we are boldly coloring
outside the lines of luxury in any
guest interaction, turning your
traditional hotel stay into an
extraordinary experience. When
you step into W Kuala Lumpur you
know you’re at a W hotel.
To further elevate our guest
experiences, we have talents in
positions you will not find in any
other hotels. Our W Insiders, for
example, will take care of your
stay and will ensure our Whatever/
Whenever service promise is

entertainment DNA in all venues
and during all our happenings
featuring specially curated music.
Our W’s passion points are Music,
Design, Fuel and Fashion which
is evidently in place throughout
the hotel and our programming.
Be it the art pieces at Woobar or
YEN Restaurant, to the Retox at
Dusk dinner settings to fashion
collaborations throughout the
year.”
For 2021, we have big plans for
collaborations with local fashion
brands, F&B venues, art galleries
and more. Stay tuned!”

Be at peace when at ELS Teluk
Datai, where scenic greens
galore awaits
Located in the secluded and lush location of Langkawi’s
untouched rainforest, The ELS Teluk Datai conjures up
stunning landscapes that soothes the soul. Make no
mistake, the course is not all boring greens though, but
a rather enthralling experience that lures you closer to
Mother Nature.
This pristine, sprawling championship golf course is
within just a 10-mins drive from two luxury resorts in
Datai Bay, namely The Datai Langkawi and The Andaman
Langkawi, making it an epicentre for high swingers, both
foreign and locals looking to enjoy a luxurious weekend
retreat.
65
The picturesque golf course spreads across a
breathtaking 47-hectare of ground and it greets you
with the imposing sights of the mighty Mount Mat
Chinchang and its marbled limestone peaks. Nestled in
the Datai Bay of the mystical island of Langkawi, the ELS
Teluk Datai golf course is teeming with greenery that is
encircled by the clear, sparkling waters of the Andaman
Sea.

Given the scenic setting of this course, expect to see a
myriad of flora that thrive along the course, such as tropical
hardwoods, bougainvillea, palms, ferns, parasitic vines,
and broad-leafed plants, just to name a few. Fair warning
though, keep your eyes peeled for resident monkeys and
native wildlife that lurks in the evergreen forest, though
we’d reckon that they’re gentle creatures nonetheless!
The 18-hole, 72-par golf course is designed by renowned
player Ernie Els and is suitable for both novices and
pro golfers alike. Expect nothing less than a rewarding
golf experience as the amply wide fairways provide
more than enough room for you to get swinging. On
top of that, there are also excellent bunkering around
the greens to boot. Speaking of which, you won’t find
your typical bunkers here as they have been replaced
by tropical vegetations and streams, which honours the
resplendent nature within the immediate vicinity.
TROPICANA MAGAZINE
Although the terrain might seem hilly on first sight,
you’d be surprised to learn that the golf course is quite
flat on the front-nine, with more elevation changes from
there onwards. Do watch out for the sharp dogleg on
par-5 8th, which is often considered as the best on the
front nine. Then, tackle 15th with caution as it starts the
closing stretch with a remarkably plunging downhill par-3.
Another tricky hole to tackle lies on par-4, barricaded by
giant overhanging trees, preventing what would’ve been a
relatively easy route to the green for any short tee shots.
Also, don’t miss out on the opportunity to play the
signature hole, an extra hole par-3 carry over the
Andaman Sea. Finally, it’s back to a very good uphill par-
3 and then the terrific short par-5 closing hole before
you call it a day.
Long day at the course? Unwind at the open-air ELS
Club lounge or better yet, head on down to the Hornbill
Cafe to grab a bite or two. The cafe, which overlooks the
sprawling course, promises a casual dining experience
of both local and international cuisines for your
gastronomic pleasure.

Fazura
With over five million followers on Instagram, Nur Fazura
Sharifuddin is undisputedly one of the most popular
celebrities in Malaysia. Hard work and commitment to
excellence has seen Fazura add new feathers to her
already formidable rep. Actress, singer, TV host, fashion
designer, VJ, reality star and entrepreneur, she does it
all, and shows no signs of slowing down even after tying
the knot with actor Fattah Amin in 2017. The couple
welcomed their first child - a baby girl - in October 2020.
Signed to Universal Music Malaysia, Fazura debuted
her English single Can’t Forget Me in early 2019 which
topped the iTunes Malaysia chart just hours after its
release. By September 2020, the song has officially hit
more than seven million streams worldwide. One of its
main themes is self-empowerment. Fazura, who’s had
her share of criticism and condemnation on social media,
can relate: “It’s so easy to lose yourself when you’re faced
with adversity and challenges. This song was inspired
by so many amazing women I know who still manage to
find the strength to celebrate themselves, despite going
through immense pain and heartbreak.”
Fazura cites her mother, Fadillah Nasir, as the most
inspiring figure in her life. “She’s been very strong, a rock,
my backbone since I was born. I’ve always looked up to
her. She’s very kind but she doesn’t take any BS. And I
guess I got that from her. I also look up to many women
out there – my friends, my management team – every
woman I meet has a story, and each of them inspires me.”
Winner of Best Actress at the 2015 Malaysia Film Festival,
Fazura plans to release new music in the year ahead.
“Singing was always my favourite thing to do since I was
a kid,” explains Fazura. “As you progress in your career,
especially in the Malaysian entertainment industry, you
don’t want to do just one thing. I wanted to get out of
my comfort zone and challenge myself, by singing or
producing. I do enjoy being an entrepreneur as well; so as
for the many hats I wear, I enjoy them all thoroughly.”
TROPICANA MAGAZINE
Datuk Zang Toi
Toi was born in Kuala Krai in Kelantan on 11 June, 1961.
He left Malaysia at the age of 18 and landed in New York
City a year later where he attended Parsons School
of Design. In 1989, with a modest collection of bright
sarongs, strong suits and regal dresses, he opened his
own atelier. In 1991, he won the Mouton-Cadet Young
Designers Award, which recognises the top young US
designer of the year.
Thus far, the couturier has dressed famous
personalities such as Sharon Stone, Pattie LaBelle,
Kirstie Alley, Ivana Trump and Fergie from the Black
Eyed Peas. He was the first Malaysian designer to
make it big overseas. And he continues to make the
country proud. He hopes to set a good example
for younger Malaysians. “I want to tell them if they
work hard, they can succeed in life, regardless of
where you come from. I myself came from a humble
background.”
What was the biggest lesson learnt from 2020?
“Expect the unexpected and stand strong to forge
forward,” muses Toi. His wish for 2021 is for the
Covid-19 and lockdown to be a distant memory.
According to Toi, his lifestyle has not changed
much due to the pandemic. “I have always been
a homebody with the exception of my love of
travelling around the world, which inspires me in
my designs.”
Asked to share his secret of success, Toi
replies: “I’ve always thought of myself as a
free thinker who always led his own path.
My advice to young aspiring designers is to
always stay true to your dream, and work
hard and smart to turn the dream into
reality.”

JAN/FEB 2021 TRAILBLAZER
Ling Tan
Born Tan Mang Ling and raised in Kuala Lumpur, this
178cm-tall model was no stranger to fashion growing
up. “My mother was a seamstress, and I’ve been
exposed to fashion ever since I was young. I helped
her with the sewing and measuring.” Tan later enrolled
herself in a vocational school to study fashion.
Her big break came when she was spotted by an
advertising executive while waiting for a friend at
a hotel’s high tea fashion show. And it wasn’t long
before European and American designers showing
their collections in Malaysia were so impressed with
Tan that they encouraged her to move to New York
City.
Acknowledged as the first international supermodel
from Malaysia, Tan has graced the covers and
editorial pages of fashion magazines including Vogue,
Harper’s Bazaar, Marie Claire, Elle and New York
Times Magazine. She has appeared in commercials
for Emporio Armani fragrances, Ford car and Pantene
Hair Colour, as well as George Michael’s music
video Fast Love and an episode of Sex And The City.
90
What is Tan’s advice for wannabe models? “Be alert.
Just like other professions, modelling has its good and
bad sides. Don’t let anyone take advantage of you. To
survive in the modelling business, you have to stay
healthy and optimistic.” Her wish for 2021 is simple.
“Enjoy the moment and go with the flow. Whatever
will be, will be.”

LONGINES, AVIGATION TYPE WATCH
A-7 1935
Longines revisits one of its iconic heritage
pieces with a new version of the Avigation
Watch Type A-7 1935. It is based on a
model released in 1935 (hence the name)
with oversized Arabic numerals and a
porcelain dial. The newest edition has a
restrained 41mm diameter and is 14mm
in height. The 316L stainless steel case
has round edges and a full-mirror polish,
and a large crown at 12 o’clock. A domed
sapphire crystal with an anti-reflective
coating covers the dial while the caseback
is solid steel. The silhouette of a plane
is engraved on the back with the brand
name stretched across the wings and a
sunburst pattern radiating towards the
edge. The case has a sturdy weight to it
and is water-resistant to 30 metres.
TROPICANA MAGAZINE
MONTBLANC, 1858 GEOSPHERE LIMITED
EDITION
This watch is dedicated to legendary
climber and explorer Reinhold Messner.
Limited to 262 pieces, it is a nod to all
the peaks over 26,200 feet that Messner
climbed during his career. The timepiece
is housed in a 42 mm special bronze
alloy case with slim, curved horns that
are decorated with both polished and
satin finishings. It is powered by the
Manufacture automatic Calibre MB
29.25, with a world time complication
that includes two turning domed globes
representing the northern and southern
hemispheres that make a full rotation
every 24 hours. They are surrounded by a
scale with the 24 time zones, along with a
day/night indicator. A second time zone is
located at nine o’clock and a date window
(linked to the local time) is positioned at
three o’clock.
LOUIS VUITTON, TAMBOUR DAMIER
GRAPHITE RACE
This timepiece represents the ideal
combination of sport and style, with
graphic lines set against a dial featuring
the iconic, masculine Damier canvas
check. An energetic hue of green is
contrasted against the depth of black.
Inspired by artistic director Virgil Abloh’s
menswear collections, this lends a bold
and fresh take to the automatic and
chronograph watches. Sporty touches
come through on the fluorescentaccented
black strap, which can be
swapped for a bold tonal green version,
contrasting a sense of athleticism against
the graphite-hued PVD-coated steel
case and smoked grey sapphire glass
caseback. It is available as a 41.5 mm
diameter automatic and 46 mm diameter
chronograph.

JAN/FEB 2021 CHRONOMETER
BELL & ROSS, BR05 SKELETON BLUE
This new skeleton version - dressed in
blue – highlights an architectural modern
design. The rich finishes of the BR05 draw
the eye. Its 40 mm case is angular. The
satin-finished surfaces are perfectly flat.
The blue-tinted transparent dial features
metal appliqué indices and forms a clear
window through which the skeleton
movement can be admired. Skeletonised
hands and appliqué indices offer perfect
legibility at both day and night. It is
equipped with a BR-CAL.322 mechanism,
wound by a 360° blue coated oscillating
weight, open-worked to showcase the
movement. The brand’s logo is metallised
on the sapphire case-back. This model can
be worn on a steel bracelet or a ribbed
blue rubber strap.
96
PIAGET, ALTIPLANO TOURBILLON
LIMITED EDITION
Not only is Piaget offering this high
complication for women, it has developed
a smaller 38mm case size just for them
in this pure white mother-of-pearl, which
is accompanied by a 41mm version with
a blue dial for those who appreciate
a larger, bolder look. This new model
highlights the ultra-thin flying tourbillon
carriage in a round window at 2 o’clock.
The position of the tourbillon with the
hour and minutes counter at 8 o’clock
to form a lucky 8. Featuring a sunray
engraving, dark grey indexes and rose
gold-coloured hands, the timepiece is
adorned with 88 sparkling diamonds
on the bezel and the folding clasp. It
comes with a sapphire case back that
provides a stunning view on this ultra-thin
movement. It is paired with an elegant
grey alligator strap and is limited to 88
pieces each.
TROPICANA MAGAZINE
AUDEMARS PIGUET, CODE 11.59
Composed of an octagonal middle case,
a round extra-thin bezel and stylised lugs,
the unconventional case design pushed
ancestral hand finishing techniques to
new heights with more details than
meet the eye. Designed for both men
and women, this collection features an
optimum curved ergonomics, making it
comfortable for all to wear despite its
41mm in diameter. Audemars Piguet has
also enriched its self-winding date, hour,
minute and second models as well as its
Chronograph models with a two-tone
case aesthetics juxtaposing 18-carat
white and pink gold. This exclusive
combination highlights the case’s multiple
geometries, hand-finished to the nine, as
well as the collection’s blend of age-old
craftsmanship and innovative design. Each
watch comes with a hand-stitched “largesquare
scale” alligator strap matching the
dial’s colour.

ASTON
MARTIN'S
FIRST EVER FULL-SIZE
5-SEAT MODEL
The all new DBX from
Aston Martin boasts the dynamic
performance of a sports car.
The DBX marks a new era in Aston Martin’s performance
and usability in a segment previously unexplored by the
manufacturer. Combining the versatility and indulgence
of a luxury SUV with the dynamic performance of a
sports car, this new model aims to stamp the marque’s
market presence in the SUV segment.
Touted as a luxury SUV with “the soul of a sports car”,
the car is built from bottom up on a new platform
that harks back to its virtual development in 2015. The
culmination of an extensive development programme
beginning with physical testing done in Wales in 2018,
the dedicated SUV platform pushes the boundaries
of British design and engineering, resulting in a body
structure that is both very light and incredibly stiff, with
an overall kerb weight of 2,245kg. This translates into
class-leading headroom and legroom for both front
and rear passengers, and exceptional on and off-road
dynamics.
99
Aston Martin’s unmistakable identity is apparent from
the get-go, from the signature ‘DB’ grille at the front,
through the sculptured sides and design feature line,
JAN/FEB 2021 WHEEL
BOTTOM RIGHT:
Aston Martin’s DBX
offers 40:20:40 split
folding rear seats.
TOP LEFT:
The luxuriously
handcrafted interior of
the DBX speaks of
class and refinement
to the tailgate with a flip that draws inspiration from
Vantage. Hidden side glass seals on the frameless doors
and glass B-pillar finishers add an elegant sleekness to
the stance. Cutaway sills also assist in narrowing the
stepover required to enter the SUV, ensuring designer
gowns or suits stay pristine without picking up stains.
Much thought has been given to aerodynamics in the
design process, and this includes daytime running lights
with integrated aerodynamic duct, which channels air
through the front wheel arches and along the side,
helping to reduce both drag and lift while also cooling
the brakes. Air flows cleanly over the roof, through the
rear wing, over the rear window and on to the rear flip.
This unique approach and design detail allow the rear
screen to self-clear on the move.
Upon entering, the full-length glass panoramic roof and
frameless door glass grab your attention. Front sports
car seats provide the driver with exceptional support
and long-distance driving comfort, and back passengers
have ample knee and footwell clearance as well.
Cabin noise is kept to a minimum at speed while the
vehicle maintains a highly responsive and engaging
dynamic capability.
100
TROPICANA MAGAZINE
Powered by a 4-litre, twin-turbocharged V8 engine
found in the DB11 and Vantage, DBX features an
impressive output of 550PS and 700NM of torque,
replete with sound character that is unquestionably
Aston Martin.
The turbocharged V8 has cylinder deactivation to
enhance fuel economy, which enables the DBX to
accelerate from 0 to 100km/h in merely 4.5 seconds and
on to a top speed of 291km/h.
Transmitting this power and torque to the ground is a
nine-speed torque convertor automatic gearbox, allied
to an all-wheel drive system with active differentials
featuring an active central differential and an electronic
rear limited slip differential. This allows the torque to be
moved precisely both fore and aft in the vehicle and also
across the rear axle.
Aston Martin’s first ever full-size 5-seat model caters
to a wide variety of lifestyle needs. With 632 litres of
boot space and 40:20:40 split folding rear seats, it has
the flexibility expected of an SUV. The practical narrow
load sill and broad aperture allows you to ferry anything
from suitcases, golf bags and ski equipment to even twin
prams.
A range of optional accessory packages are available,
meant to help tailor the car to customers’ needs, sports
or pastimes. There’s even a Pet package that includes a
portable washer to help attend to the needs of a muddy
dog after a walk!
A 10.25” TFT screen sits in the centre console, while a
huge 12.3” TFT screen provides information to the driver.
Apple CarPlay comes as standard, as does a 360-degree
camera system and ambient lighting that offers 64
different colours in two zones.
The DBX comes with adaptive triple volume air
suspension combined with the latest 48v electric antiroll
control system (eARC) and electronic adaptive
dampers. With its capacity to raise the ride height by
45mm or lower it by 50mm, the air suspension makes it
possible for the driver to tackle a wide range of terrain.

FEAST
WITH THE FAMILY
AT TROPICANA GARDENS MALL
Great news for fans of mala hotpot! Yuan Laosi Hotpot’s
very first restaurant in Malaysia has opened in Tropicana
Gardens Mall. Beautifully decorated, it is spacious and
grand, with ample tables to accommodate its growing
fan base.
Offering both open dining and private booths, Yuan
Laosi also has four private VIP rooms complete with
karaoke. Its unique selling point comes in the form of an
in-house bar where you can order a variety of beer and
spirits to complete your meal.
This is in line with the restaurant’s business
philosophy; not only is hotpot comfort food, it offers
a traditional party culture. By providing customers a
relaxing environment, Yuan Laosi – which originated
from Chongqing – is the ideal setting for family and
friends to gather.
Yuan Laosi gives diners the option to go for single,
double or triple soup base. The restaurant’s must-try is
naturally the mala soup base. During our visit, we opted
for the triple soup base comprising their signature mala
soup, tomato soup and mushroom soup. All three soup
bases were hearty and well-flavoured.
In terms of meat, their recommended signatures
are duck intestine, fresh frog leg, pork shoulder and
meatballs. The meat slices here are generous and thick,
while the ingredients are fresh, complemented by an
assortment of dumplings and vegetable.
Yuan Laosi also has a variety of starters and side dishes to
choose from. Highly recommended are Sichuan style sugar
ice jelly, glutinous rice cake and crispy fried meat. Overall, it
was a satisfying dining experience that makes one eager to
make a return visit. For more details, call 012-991 8830.
