THE ART OF LEISURE
With COVID-19 vaccines rolling out, it might seem
like now is the best time to hustle and reclaim that
momentum of power you lost the past year. As we are
always aligned with our mantra of redefining the art of
living, this issue, we set out to take some time to learn
about the philosophy of not only the art of living, but
of leisure as well, for a balance of both work and play.
Our cover personality, the CEO of Berjaya Foods
Berhad and Starbucks Malaysia embodies this balance
very well. Being a key leader in the food and beverage
industry, Sydney Quays surely leads a fast-paced
life. Despite that, he ensures to take time out for
himself and his family every now and then, which also
contributes to his success at work.

CELEBRATE
THE BICYCLE!
This two wheeled contraption has been changing
lives since the 19th century.
10
Tropicana Aman, Kota Kemuning
TROPICANA MAGAZINE
Every year on 3 June, the world celebrates
World Bicycle Day. The tradition started in April 2018
when the United Nations General Assembly recognised
the value and significance of this simple and reliable
mode of transportation that has benefitted us for at least
two centuries.
As an ode to this celebration, various events and activities
are organised all over the world to encourage people to
join in the festivities. It also provides the opportunity to
raise awareness on the benefits of cycling and promotes
city councils to increase measures to improve road safety
and cycling mobility to protect the safety of riders and
pedestrians alike. The improvement of cycling routes in and
around the city will in turn encourage more people to utilise
the bicycle.
The bicycle is a clean, sustainable and environmentally
friendly means of transportation. It’s practicality and
reliability proves useful to millions of people, powered by
their own bodies. A fun, hassle-free way to get around,
it also enables people to stay fit and healthy. With this in
mind, cycling has fast become one of the more popular
recreational activities in recent years. Cycling increases
mobility and reduces the risk of heart disease, stroke,
diabetes and other health concerns.
IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO START CYCLING, HERE ARE
SOME KEY TIPS TO KEEP IN MIND.
Set your seat height right because having the wrong
saddle height could put you at risk for injury.
Get a good bike fit to ensure your arms and torso make
a 45-degree angle over the bike. Protect yourself with a
safety helmet.
Don’t forget to maintain your bike by lubing your
chain and keeping the recommended amount of air in
your tires.
Take it slow and steady while you give your body time
to adjust to new distances.
Hydration is extremely important and forgetting to
do so can cause dizziness, nausea, irritability and
confusion. If the ride is more than two hours long, bring
a snack & eat small amounts every 15-20 mins or so.
11
It is common to see groups of friends and like-minded
people gather at various hotspots around town that are
deemed suitable for getting a good workout on their
bicycles. Some of these spots are located in parks and
affluent neighbourhoods where people can take in pleasant
and relaxing sights, whilst keeping fit.
MAY/JUNE 2021 SEASONS
Aside from great health benefits, cycling
give you more flexibility to move around
from one place to another
12
SOME POPULAR HOT-SPOTS FOR CYCLING ARE:
Tropicana Aman Freesia Residences While most
public parks and roads are free for all, this stunning
new location has set up a special Walking & Biking
Community. Artfully designed to reacquaint us with
the alluring attributes of nature, the residence is built
alongside beautiful lakes and parks spanning 85 acres
of a central park with 7km of trails and paths.
Kuala Lumpur City Centre On the first and third
Sunday of every month, roads are closed off and
reserved for cycling, jogging or walking. Aptly called
KL Car Free Morning, cyclists can take advantage of
the hours between 7 – 9am and experience cycling on
otherwise busy main roads.
Lake Gardens @ Perdana Botanical Gardens The Lake
Gardens is KL’s iconic recreational park that attracts
visitors from all over town. It is a vast park with
beautiful lush greenery, perfect for picnics, walking,
jogging, cycling, and even exploring the various species
of plants and flowers there.
Bukit Kiara Park This park located in Taman Tun has
steep cycling trails for enthusiasts. It has wide, wellpaved
paths to jog, hike or cycle. The serene ambience
of this park provides an ideal respite from KL’s busy life.
Desa Park City Its Central Park is a famous recreational
park for walkers, joggers and cyclists alike. Located
13km outside central KL, it has a man-made lake and a
9-foot wide cycling trail.

BUILD
YOUR OWN
BIKE
A custom-made one allows you to
tailor it to suit your every need.
Whether you’re new to cycling or have been at it for a while,
there are many factory-built bicycles ready for you to purchase.
So why would you need to build your own bicycle? Well, while
an off-the-rack set of wheels offer great value, you aren’t able
to modify it to your own preferences and body needs. Therefore,
building your own from the frame up is your best bet to getting
one that truly fits you in every sense. Here’s how you can start.
14
THE FRAMESET
Before you build your bicycle, visualise
and consider all the components you
need to complete it. As the core of the
bike, the frame serves as the foundation
for you to build around it. Pick your
desired brand and choose from used
or new frames. A new one gives you
full control, while a used frame lets you
cut down on cost and spend on other
components such as the wheel set,
handlebar, saddle and such.
TROPICANA MAGAZINE
THE GROUPSET
This refers to the mechanical or electronic
parts of the bicycle that cover changing gears,
the brakes, the chain, and the running of the
drivetrain. Mechanical shifting works via cables
that are attached to the shifters, and run via
the frame to the front and rear derailleurs.
This helps reduce weights and gives a more
natural feel. Electronic shifting works via wires
attached to the shifters and derailleurs that
transfer a signal, or via wireless technology
similar to Bluetooth or ANT+ devices.
THE HANDLEBAR
This determines the entire feel and
ride experience of your bike. While
mountain bikes have flat handlebars,
road bikes have drop bars that allow
you to crouch down and reduce drag.
This will help increase your speed
and efficiency.
THE WHEELS
When selecting a set of wheels, you
can choose between aluminium or
carbon fibre. The former will give your
better comfort, however, the latter is
lighter and will look more sleek and
stylish. There's a wide range of wheel
sets in the market for different types of
rides. For a long-distance journey, opt
for high-profile carbon wheels because
they are more aerodynamic.

To celebrate the successful opening of the

Tropicana Gardens Mall jointly hosted a

the largest Starbucks Reserve store in Malaysia

“When we opened the first Starbucks Reserve

coffee destination unlike any other. Now,
we are thrilled to be offering this unique

This unique signature store offers an

the largest in the market. Located on the

THE COFFEE
CONNOISSEUR
As the CEO of Berjaya Food Berhad and Starbucks
Malaysia, his life may be fast-paced but Sydney Quays
values family time more than anything else. Here, he
tells us what he does on his downtime and more.
50
It’s been 33 years since Quays, now 53 years old, studied hospitality at the
American Hotel & Lodging Association in the United States, and yet, his passion
for the industry has not wavered. “I think there is no business that can compare
to the food and beverage business in terms of dynamism, constant evolution of
trends and consumer behavior, and diversity of offerings. Take two years ago
(before the COVID-19 pandemic), the F&B landscape was so different from what
it is today, and it will be different in the next two years,” he shares.
One of his biggest achievements to date is seeing how the Starbucks brand,
which debuted 23 years ago in Malaysia, grew into what it is today. From the
first store, which was in KL Plaza (now known as Fahrenheit 88) in 1998 to over
330 outlets today, and having the opportunity to employ over 5,000 people,
Quays has undeniably been the key player in the success of the brand.
Quays is a firm believer in hard work paying off. “Having success at work will
lead to success in family and life, because ultimately, the harder you work, the
luckier you get,” he explains. In this day and age where maintaining a healthy
work-life balance can be tricky, Quays does not find it tough. “Personally, I love
what I do, so I don’t feel that there is a need to separate them,” he adds.

However, Quays knows how to unplug and recharge
when he needs to. This Penangite says, “I’m kind of
a DIY person so I like to ‘fix’ stuff around the house,
which sometimes drives my family nuts! Other than
that, I like to stay fit by doing some cardio exercises
like running on the treadmill, cycling, and rowing on
a daily basis.” On his days off, Sydney can be found
spending time with family. As a husband and father
of two children, he shares, “My family is my biggest
support system. They not only inspire me but also drive
me to work harder so that I too can become a role
model and inspire them to do the same. It’s not every
day that we’re all together as my kids are in their early
20’s, so it’s nice to have that time to ourselves.”
53
ON LIVING IN TROPICANA With the latest and largest
launch of the Starbucks Reserve outlet at the Tropicana
Gardens Mall in Kota Damansara, it made sense for
Quays to also invest in property nearby – the Tropicana
Edelweiss. “I have always appreciated Tropicana
properties. They have excellent post-sales service and
the team has just been very accommodating to me.
I was also very pleased with the amenities that will
be provided with the residence. And seeing as how
Kota Damansara is a place that has been coming up

trendy address to live in but also a great investment for

MAY/JUNE 2021 DIY
TROPICANA MAGAZINE
In a hectic and modern world where the city
never sleeps, we are constantly mentally
stimulated. All our other senses frequently
go into overdrive too as we attempt to take
in the sights, sounds, smells, energies, and
vibrations of a world that moves at warp
speed around us. It is no wonder that a lot of
us forget to stay still and just breathe.
In order to bring some semblence of peace
and tranquility back into our lives, a simple
solution could be as easy as creating one’s
own leisure space. Now what would this
space look like? Where would it be located?
How and where would you begin to create
one? All pertinent questions that you would
have to answer, but not before you ask
yourself the most important question of all: If
you had all the time in the world, what would
your leisure be?
FOR THE BOOK LOVER Start by finding a
corner in your house that is underutilised and
aim to turn it into a reading corner. Purchase
a pretty bookshelf and store all your favourite
reads in there. Furnish it with a comfortable
armchair or some cushions and a rug, then
schedule some time every week for an hour or
two when you are less likely to be disturbed.
You can fill the space with anything you like
that speaks to your personality. Select a
colour theme, preferably one that makes you
happy. As you sit leisurely in your corner,
take in the calming atmosphere, shut off your
electronics and make that time solely your
happy hour.
Cool grey tones add
brightness to the space
at Tropicana Aman,
Kota Kemuning
As you imagine what this space would be like
for you, start a small notebook and jot down
all the things you wish to place in it and what
you need to obtain to make it your own.
Some things to consider are:
• A space where you won’t be interrupted for
a period of time.
• Make it cosy and welcoming.
• Gather the things you love.
• Play soothing music.
• Shut off elecronics like mobile devices.
• Cleanse it and fill it with essential oils to
invoke positive feelings.
FOR THE ART ENTHUSIAST You could be
a DIY lover and your leisure corner would
be made up of a table top, some tools and
equipment to make any of your little dream
projects come true! You could be interested
in art and painting, in which case your space
would consist of easels and paints, and works
in progress as you are swept away an hour a
day to continue working on what inspires you
and makes
you happy.
FOR THE AUDIOPHILE Or you could be a
musician or just someone with a keen interest
in music. Perhaps you play an instrument,
in which case your space would consist of
musical scores, the instrument you love, a rug
and cushion to sit back and enjoy playing or
listening to some music. Whatever your heart
desires, your leisure space will provide you
the escape you need for a short while, as you
try to bring balance back into your life.

BACK TO SCHOOL!
Now that learning institutions have reopened, children
are able to benefit from real-time interaction again.
Incorporating fun opportunities for students along with a robust academic
curriculum is beneficial for a child’s growth. Recognising this, GEMS
International School at Tropicana Metropark in Subang Jaya offers an
environment that ensures students are celebrated, given new experiences,
and above all, feel safe and happy. With the reopening of schools across the
country, we talk to a student about her thoughts on studying at this highlyacclaimed
school.
MEET THE STUDENT:
Shazana M.A Shajahan, Year 12 – A Level
If you could describe GEMS in three words, what would they be? “Friendly
environment, diverse community and ample resources.”
TROPICANA MAGAZINE
What do you love about studying at GEMS? “The dedicated teachers who go the
extra mile for me! They continuously encourage me to go out of my comfort zone.
Additionally, studying at GEMS has allowed me to explore different scopes of study and
I’m very lucky to be able to have a balanced subject combination for my A Levels, where
I am able to also pursue my passion subjects.”
77
How has it been transitioning from learning at home to going back to school? “With
the onset of the pandemic, online learning was the only way we could go forward,
however, I was most happy when we were finally allowed back to school. Learning with
friends at a desk with a teacher is definitely much better! Transitioning from learning at
home back to physical classes was purely instinctive for me!
What would you tell another student who is considering studying at GEMS? “GEMS
combines the best traditional methods and modern teaching practices. The faculty of
local and expatriate teachers work very closely with all students to ensure successful
learning. They encourage students to be independent learners, thus instilling the need
for us to be responsible and taking charge for our own learning.”

1. Following a creative childhood, Jeff Koons
studied painting at the Maryland Institute
College of Art in Baltimore and the School
of the Art Institute of Chicago. It wasn’t
until the mid-1980s where he rose to
prominence as an innovative sculptor,
designing uniquely crafted objects that are
well-known globally today.
2. To date, Jeff has produced over 1,000
art pieces. He turns unassuming, everyday
objects, such as the twisting balloons, into
high-art icons.
3. One of his early famous artworks is the
‘Rabbit’, designed in 1986. Made of highly
polished stainless steel, it resembles an
inflatable bunny with a reflective mirrorlike
surface, which gives the viewer a cool,
distorted effect of themselves when peering
into it. It is now the most expensive work sold
at auction by a living artist and is owned by
the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago.
4. Jeff’s work isn’t without controversy. In
1988, he created a series of kitsch sculptures
in a series called ‘Banality’ that’s inspired
by pop culture. One of his more recognised
sculptures depicts a white and gold porcelain
Michael Jackson leaning back in a flower bed
while his monkey, Bubbles clutches at a white
cloth. Critics say that the sculpture resembles
a religious portrayal akin to Catholic saints
figures that are often sculptured from gold
leaf and porcelain.
5. ‘Celebration’, conceived in 1994, is an
ongoing Koons series of sixteen paintings
and twenty sculptures that’s inspired by
the rituals surrounding parties. Among his
iconic creations for this series are ‘Tulips’, a
group of whimsical multi-coloured, stainless
steel sculptures that resemble a bouquet of
flowers, and ‘Balloon Dog’, a literal sculpture
of a giant balloon animal – the kind you see
at birthday parties.

The global beauty industry is valued at
$532 billion and is on a rapid upward
trajectory. Zooming in on Malaysia
alone, it is revealed by GlobaData
that Malaysia’s Cosmetics & Toiletries
industry is expected to grow at a
compound annual growth rate of 4.2
percent from RM6.4bn (US$1.6bn) in
2018 to RM7.9bn (US$2.1bn) by 2023.
While Gucci has already established
itself as a fashion power player and
needs no further introduction, the lure
of the beauty industry and its ability
to reach a vast and entirely diverse
range of consumers is one that’s hard
to ignore. The popularity of ‘beauty
influencing’ has reached new heights
with consumers looking to their
favourite social media stars when they
need new products.
It has to be pointed out that Gucci
Beauty had initially launched in 2014
with little success. Under the helm
of Creative Director Frida Giannini,
the brand collaborated with iconic
makeup artist Pat McGrath and was
marketed as sleek, luxurious, and
sophisticated in casings of black
and gold. It was subsequently
discontinued. But times are different
now than it was then.
Today, the beauty audience is varied
and unique, which is why the rebirth
of Gucci Beauty in 2019, under the
creative direction of Alessandro
Michele, was celebrated. It was his
idea of quirkiness and eccentricity
coupled with unconventional beauty
campaigns depicting intentional
imperfections and untraditional
faces that were embraced by
customers. “Makeup should not
mask, but rather exalt, flaws and
make them part of the language of
beauty," he says.

What are some of the leading
causes of hyperpigmentation?
“Hyperpigmentation is most
commonly caused by sun exposure,
ageing, and post- inflammation left
behind from an acne lesion or rash.
The prolonged appearance of these
spots is due to something called
“pigment drop out,” where pigment
from the top layer of the skin drops
down into the dermis and blocks
skin exfoliation (or the “cleaning”
process) from occurring, preventing
new skin cells from rising to
surface..”

highlight is the double stairway that connects the

with a sauna, hammam, massage room and gym.
It comes as no surprise that the 64Steel Attila

considered as the Oscars in the yachting industry.
44Alloy Equally impressive is the 44.5 metrelong
and nine metre-wide 44Alloy, which can reach
top speeds of 23 knots. Made of aluminium, it is
characterised by clean, sporty lines and features
a sky lounge on the upper deck. This vehicle
boasts a mezzanine loft set-up in the master cabin,
which spans over three levels and covers an area
of 145 square metres, a feature that has never
been introduced in a yacht of this size, according
to Antonio Santella, Vice-president of Sales and
Marketing at Sanlorenzo’s Superyacht Division.
SD96 Another award-winning yacht is the SD96.
With an interior created by architect and designer,
Patricia Urquiola, it was awarded the Best Layout
Trophy (in the 24 metres to 30 metres category) at
the 2019 Cannes Yachting Festival. “The materials,
shapes and colors evoke the marine world, creating
a flowing and elegant space full of natural colors,”
explains Urquiola. Innovation is also key in the
interior design. For example, the principal living
area on the main deck, characterised by cannulated
oak panelled walls and parquet flooring, showcases
the concept of moduarity.

MAY/JUNE 2021 TEE-OFF
While not every course teaches you something,
some are just full of lessons. Enter the Resorts
World Awana Genting Highlands Golf Course.
Nestled among the clouds, it is almost quite
literally at 3,100 feet above sea level. Combine that
with the surrounding lush forest, it is certainly not
your typical course.
108
At first glance, any avid golfer would gasp at
the tight fairways. Some may furrow their brows
in apprehension, but most would revel in the
exhilaration of playing such a tricky course nestled
into the Titiwangsa mountain range. The refreshing
cool wind is a welcome change from the heat of
lowlands. Trust us when we say you’ll need this
coolness when grappling with the trickier parts of
Awana Genting’s golf course that’s renowned for its
undulating tightness from start to finish.
Designed in 1986 by American architect Ron
Fream, the 18-hole championship course with its
scenic terrain spotted by fir trees mixed in with
jungle species is a perfect representation of the
architect’s design ethos. Fream once lamented
in a 2014 interview that golf need not always
be an immaculate, highly expensive standard.
“The origins on the links of Scotland and some
of the earliest courses outside the UK in the
tea plantations and hill stations of India clearly
demonstrate that golf can be a bit scruffy, rough
round the edges and still be enjoyable.”
The golf course at Awana Genting is a fantastic
design challenge where risk-reward shots are
regularly presented to golfers playing this layout.
On many holes, golfers can take short cuts over
the surrounding trees but the narrowness means
that a severe hook or slice could land your ball
into the jungle. Hence, precision is of utmost
importance here.
Going for the green Though golfing at Awana
Genting is often characterised as a challenge,
that’s not all there is to it. You see, the whole joy
about golf is being there in nature, surrounded by
trees, grass and beautiful landscaping, and often in
good company.
This exact spirit is reflected in a brand new highland
city located just kilometres away from the golf
course. Known as Tropicana Grandhill, this 112-acre
slice of heaven nestled in the Genting hillside is
currently being transformed into the first masterplanned
township in the highlands with a sprawling

Painted Stork (Mycteria leucocephala)
This is a large stork with a long yellow bill that curves down at
the tip. The adult is primarily white with black striped markings
on the wings, white plumage and bright pink on tertials - which
lends to the painted appearance. It is also hard to miss the bright
orange face, pinkish legs, and speckled band across the chest. These
storks typically fly with their head and neck drooping almost at or
below the belly level.
Where: West Course Hole 14
Eastern Great Egret (Ardea alba modesta)
The snowy-white bird is marked with a yellow bill and dark legs.
Interestingly during courtship, the bill turns grey black while the
long straight aigrette plumes extend beyond the tail. The Eastern
Great Egret is often seen wading slowly through the water, on
the lookout for prey such as fish, frogs, insects and other small
aquatic creatures.

This small heron is also known as the fisherman bird! Equipped with
a natural fishing rod (a long extensible neck) and bait (sometimes),
this solitary bird is commonly seen perched patiently at ponds and
lakes as it seeks out fish. Then, the seemingly short neck suddenly
stretches into extreme lengths as it snaps up prey.

Asian Glossy Starling (Aplonis panayensis)
This dark beauty is a large songbird with ruby-red eyes and
whose body features a stunning greenish gloss in good light.
They’re also highly gregarious, roosting in large flocks, feeding
mainly on fruits, nectar, and insects. Considered one of the noisiest
families of birds, the call is a short whistle when perched, and a
ringing when in flight.
Where: East 1 Hole 4
Forest Kingfisher (Todiramphus macleayii)
The beautiful blue and white small bird is also known as the
Macleay's or Blue Kingfisher thanks to its bright plumage. It has a
white belly and vibrant multi-tone blue wings and back, along with
a notable bright white spot in front of the eyes that does not extend
back over the eye. In flight shows white patches on the wings.

Oriental Magpie-Robin (Copsychus saularis)
This bird is neither a magpie nor a robin, but is in fact an old world
flycatcher. Its name is derived from its black and white plumage
resembling a magpie, while its jerky movements, tail fanning, and
confiding habits resemble that of a robin. The prized asset of this
bird is none other than its strong melodious song that is highly
variable with the ability to mimic the songs of other birds.

THE ODYSSEY
EXPERIENCE
Thai massage plays a vital role in overall
health and well-being.
TROPICANA MAGAZINE
The Thai body massage is a popular technique that
originated in India dating back to 2500-7000 years
ago. There is a significant amount of stretching in
various positions that loosens tight muscles and
increases the body’s flexibility. The deep holding
stretches often feel very relaxing and allow you to
focus on your breathing. The Thai Body Massage
leaves a person feeling calm, relaxed, refreshed
and most of the time, looking forward to the next
session. Other benefits of Thai Body Massage and
Reflexology include:
Boosts Energy The body is believed to have
various channels or lines of energy running through
it. Different parts of the body correspond with
these energy channels. When they are blocked,
this reduces the flow of life energy and result in
discomfort, stiffness, pain, and illness. A massage
uses techniques that unblocks or opens and corrects
the flow of this life energy within the body.
Reduce Pain & Improve Circulation The use of
gentle stretches can improve blood circulation and
lymphatic function. The increase in blood circulation
results in increased oxygen within the body and
this promotes cell growth and tissue repair. The
lymphatic system encourages filtering and detoxing
of toxins, and other unwanted materials, thus
improving fluid retention as well.
Reducing Stress In the modern world, daily life is
often hectic and filled with stress triggers along the
way. Illnesses that can develop from stress include
depression and cardiovascular disease. A massage
that includes gentle pressure and stretching can
significantly promote calm and relaxation, thus
reducing stress.
123
For a therapeutic massage experience, you may
head over to Thai Odyssey where you will be
nurtured in a spa-inspired environment influenced
by Thai’s rich cultural heritage. Their high
performance therapists apply an authentic Thai
holistic approach and are eager to serve you within
a charming and serene atmosphere. Thai Odyssey
has multiple outlets all over Malaysia and you can
find the one nearest to you through its website,

This signature store celebrates all
things coffee. With a design that’s
similar to the shape of a coffee bean,
the layout of the store is vast, with a
large curvature and floor-to-ceiling
windows that connect the indoors to
the small garden seating area outside.
Spanning more than 6,200 square
feet of retail space, the store features
two bars: the main one offering
all core and seasonal handcrafted
Starbucks beverages, and the other,
a coffee bar that offers six different
brewing methods, including pour-over,
Chemex®, siphon, Black Eagle espresso,
and Nitro Cold Brew.
132
Lots of photo spots The outdoor area
that’s inspired by Japanese gardens
looks especially great against the
backdrop of a blue sky on a sunny day.
Meanwhile, one of the main highlights
of the store is a 50-foot wide ‘Wall
of Gratitude’, which features photos
of more than 200 frontline medical
workers and Starbucks baristas. The
mural serves as a way to pay tribute
to the people who have been fighting
together against COVID-19.
A convenient location The Tropicana
Gardens Mall is located in the heart of
the bustling community between Kota
Damansara and Tropicana Indah, which
is the largest neighbourhood mall in
the vicinity. Spanning approximately
1 million square feet, this vibrant
shopping centre is the largest
