THE ART OF DINING
If there’s one thing that many of us have in
common is our love for food. Eating is one
of life’s greatest pleasures. It's not just
about filling up our tummies but also
appreciating the many different flavours
that make up our favourite food. Rewarding
ourselves with our best-loved delights or
having them when in great company can be
an enjoyable experience.
At Tropicana Gardens Mall, you’ll never be
short of finding places to eat as the mall is
home to a diverse mix of F&B outlets. Find
out more about some of them in the Savour
section. If you’re into authentic Japanese
cuisine, you’ve got to visit Ra-men Bankara
at the mall. Its Managing Director, Aaron Lee
who is on our cover says “Ra-Men Bankara
serves the same quality and flavour in every
bowl of ramen, as one would come to expect
if one was dining in Japan.”
And, at the Tropicana Golf & Country Resort
(“TGCR”) you’ll be spoilt for choice as there’s
a variety of restaurants there. Check out
some of the mouth-watering dishes that can
be had at TGCR in the Savour+ section.

A good read too is on the coveted 4S
(Strategic, Spectacular, Superior, Smart)
that make Tropicana Grandhill and Tropicana
Cenang worthy investments. Not forgetting,
check out stories on our schools, food
plating, greens to boost immunity, and
electric cars among many others, plus a
spread of bird photos by Imran Amir, a
special needs boy with an extraordinary
talent for photography.

Nine students of St Joseph’s

Apparently, this is truly a feat
because normally schools in
Malaysia would only have one
or two students getting the
highest grade of 45 points. Not
only that, the average score by
students at the school was 43

PARALYSED SCHOLAR GIFTED A FREE HOME BY
PROPERTYGURU & TROPICANA
WITH THE HELP OF OVER
130,000 MALAYSIANS
TROPICANA MAGAZINE
A paralysed scholar’s dream of owning a home came true
on 27 July 2021 when he was gifted with a freehold, fullyfurnished
home at Tropicana Metropark, Subang Jaya thanks
to PropertyGuru, and Tropicana Corporation Berhad, an awardwinning
Top 10 Developer in Malaysia as well as over 130,000
Malaysians who voted to change his life.
As a person living with physical limitations, Dr Basri bin Husin’s
dream of having his own space was more than a simple desire.
Wheelchair-bound and limited by his partial paralysis, he finds
his independence constantly hindered by his body’s limitations,
but constantly pushes past his obstacles without fail. Through his
moving story about his search for a home that suits him and his
family’s needs, the 39-year-old touched the hearts of the many
Malaysians, who came together and took action in voting for him
as most deserving to own the unit worth over RM600,000.
Due to his experience of living in an unsanitary neighbourhood,
which resulted in his waist down paralysis, Dr Basri was
determined to ensure his family would never again have to be
at such a risk. Pushing his personal afflictions aside, Dr Basri
dove back into his PhD studies in Universiti Malaya with renewed
vigour, knowing that completing his higher education would only
result in better career opportunities that can help him support
his family and bring him a step closer to his homeownership
aspiration. This life milestone that he has been working tirelessly
towards has been achieved much earlier with the help of
Malaysians nationwide.
Dr Basri shared, “It warms my heart to see so many Malaysians
come together to support me in the PropertyGuru Home
Giveaway initiative. My wife and I are currently renting a Rumah
Malaysia unit (formerly known as People’s Housing Project or PPR
home) for our family of four with two young children. My salary as
a research assistant and her earnings from her part-time work all
go towards our rental and daily expenses. We never thought we
would be able to own a brand-new home in such a prime location.
Our lives have changed forever, and we are forever thankful for
everyone who has helped play a part in supporting us.”
49
Knowing her husband’s desire of having a space that enables
his independence, Dr Basri’s wife nominated him for the
PropertyGuru Home Giveaway initiative, as she realised that
Tropicana Metropark has what he wants and needs. The serviced
residences are in a mature location that has easy accessibility
and connectivity that would not only encourage Dr Basri’s
independence but also provide a good living environment for
their family with a 9.2-acre urban park ideal for their children
to play in. Following the nomination, and along with four other
finalists, Dr Basri was then shortlisted among 1,000 entries. His
story received the greatest number of votes from Malaysians who
wanted to play a part in helping him own his first home.

AARON LEE’S
LOVE FOR
66
RAMEN
Even though he had a hectic schedule while
studying in Japan, Aaron Lee took the
time to explore the country, which led him
to discover Ra-Men Bankara, a renowned
ramen restaurant with its fourth local outlet
at Tropicana Gardens Mall.
TROPICANA MAGAZINE
67
SEPT/OCT 2021 COVER STORY
“I love everything!” exclaims Aaron Lee, the
Managing Director of Ra-men Bankara Malaysia,
when asked about his favourite dish at the Japanese
eatery. “That’s why I am prosperous-looking” he
adds, laughingly. On a serious note, Aaron stresses
that if a dish is not good, it will never be on the
menu. “Ra-men Bankara” he says “was founded by
Mr Kusano, a second generation ramen specialist
with his ancestors being ramen specialists dating
back to the 1950s.”
68
Aaron discovered Ra-men Bankara between 2007
and 2008 when he was studying in Japan under the
Japanese government’s Young Leaders Programme.
“Aside from the frantic studies I had a great time
exploring Japan. Having lived in Tokyo, Ra-men
Bankara was one of the regular ramen joints that
I would frequent” he recalls. Aaron adds that
the ramen dishes are exceptionally good, which
probably explains why it is called Ra-Men Bankara.
“Bankara” is an old Japanese colloquial term once
used to describe an individual’s inimitable style.
“Ra-men Bankara first opened its doors in Kuala
Lumpur in 2014. All recipes, taste and serving
portions adhere exactly to what is served in Japan.
We import about 70 percent of all food items used
for our food preparation from Japan” says the
41-year-old.
Over the years, it has managed to build a loyal
following, particularly Japanese residing in Malaysia
and well-travelled Malaysians who have visited or
resided in Japan and expect nothing less. “I can
proudly say we are the benchmark in Malaysia for
the most authentic Japanese ramen restaurant”
Aaron notes. Despite having regular customers, the
Covid-19 pandemic has affected his business.”To
date, we have to undertake salary cuts to ensure
we save all our employees’ livelihoods, adjusted
operations to fit with the new normal, adopted and
aggressively market ramen take-away.

Japanese ramen styles namely Bankara Signature,

TROPICANA GARDENS MALL in Kota Damansara,
Selangor is where you can find Ra-men Bankara’s
fourth outlet in the country. Two other outlets
are in Kuala Lumpur and another in Johor Bahru.
“Every Ra-Men Bankara location is chosen based on
the customer demographic in the area. Tropicana
Gardens Mall is surrounded by a neighbourhood
comprising the affluent as well as young families.
Many are well-travelled and appreciate authenticity.
“The mall markets itself as a family-oriented mall
and as such our outlet here is designed with
families in mind. We are located on the concourse
floor and it is about 1,500 square feet in size, with
an interior detailed with traditional Japanese
wood carvings.” Apart from the mall’s impressive
size, with one million square feet of retail space,
Aaron also gives the thumbs up to Tropicana
Gardens Mall Convention Centre for being one
of the five large vaccination centres (“PPV”) to
host the Program Vaksin Selangor (“SelVax”)
since 1 July in support of the Government’s efforts
to make the National Covid-19 Immunisation
Programme (“PICK”) a success.

TROPICANA MAGAZINE

A magical and enchanting place for you to visit after the borders are lifted is a restaurant with a terrace created
inside a natural cave in Polignano a Mare, in Puglia, Italy. The Grotta Palazzese restaurant takes its name from
the homonymous cave and from the place that was once also called “Grotta di Palazzo”. It is an exclusive and
atmospheric spot, used for parties and banquets since 1700, as evidenced by a watercolour artwork dated 1783
by Jean Louis Desprez. The blue of the sea and the sky contrasts with the mysterious atmospheres of the natural
cavities. The colours of the day make the beauty of the coastal landscape shine, while those of the evening, at
sunset, create unforgettable nuances, in the charm and elegance of the restaurant lights.

Other than tasting good, the mark of a divine
dish is the way it is presented. An attractive
plate of food will undoubtedly arouse the
appetite and make the meal more enjoyable.
And, the chef would surely score extra points
for creativity.
“A commendable presentation will make
the food fabulous, even if it’s a simple dish”
explains Chef Zaihari Zainol, the Executive
Chef at Tropicana Golf & Country Resort
(“TGCR”) in charge of Twenty7 Restaurant,
The Palm Coffee House and Spring Garden
Restaurant. Food plating isn’t difficult
because you can choose to have your own
style based on your artistic vision.
“You can use anything from micro leaves
and vegetables to edible flowers to decorate
a dish” he says, adding that the use of thin
crackers can also be aesthetically pleasing.
Among food plating tips include creating
height on the plate by decorating from the
bottom up, playing with colours by way of
using colourful ingredients like carrots, purple
cabbage, or blue pea flower, and playing with
textures such as using sauces by swirling
them on parts of the plate.
Beautiful examples of food plating can
be seen here (see photos) from TGCR’s
Spring Garden Chinese Restaurant, and
Twenty7 Restaurant. Spring Garden Chinese
Restaurant’s fried egg white with milk,
abalone and mushroom sauce is prettified
with edible flowers. The Chicken Schnitzel

RIDING THE
ELECTRIC
WAVE
The future of automobile is
electric. Electric cars aren’t only
better for the environment but
they also come in some of the most
stylish designs you can imagine.
Looking like they were made for the movies, many electric
cars today come in the most sleek and attractive designs
that they easily steal the spotlight from other vehicles on
the road. The most eye-catching has to be the Porsche
Taycan Turbo S. With a fluid yet sharp silhouette, its rear
design boasts a seamless light strip and Porsche logo
made of three-dimensional letters. Its interior is equally
impressive. The GT multifunction sports steering wheel
and the deep, sporty seating position heighten your
anticipation of the journey ahead long before you set off.
101
Then there is the Tesla Model 3. While it has an
aerodynamic design, safety is the most important part of
its overall design. The metal structure is a combination of
aluminum and steel for maximum strength in every area. In
a roof-crush test, Model 3 resisted four times its own mass,
even with an all-glass roof - that’s the same weight as two
full-grown African elephants!

The inside is unlike any other car. You can use your smartphone
as a key and access all driver controls in the central 15-inch
touchscreen. The all-glass roof extends from front to back
creating a sense of openness from every seat. Another electric
stunner is the BMW i4. Its aerodynamically-optimised silhouette
is an extension of the classic BMW Coupe proportions - a long
wheelbase with short overhangs and a flowing roofline define its
sporty, elegant lines. A full-fledged five-seater, it offers space for
up to three people in the rear. Generous headroom and legroom
ensure seating comfort for all.
Modern, stylish and functional is the New MINI Electric, which
features a refreshed appearance without compromising on
heritage. It has new front bumpers that does away with fog
lights and now includes integrated air curtains for improved
aerodynamics. A new body-colour safety bar rests on the front
bumper, while a black surround now accentuates the hexagonal
shape of the vehicle’s radiator grille.

Clockwise: Banded

Openbill
At a massive 625 acres, plus a landscape that’s lush
and verdant, it is no surprise why Tropicana Golf &
Country Resort (“TGCR”) in Petaling Jaya is an oasis
of calm and home to unique species of flora and
fauna. The variety of birds that frolic freely at the
TGCR has caught the attention of 14-year-old Imran
Amir, a special needs boy with an extraordinary
talent for photography.
“I started photographing birds at TGCR last year
when the pandemic began. The calls and colours of
the birds made me decide to take photos of them” he
explains, adding that so far, he has taken shots of 116
species of birds. Imran says it’s an easy job because
he can see and hear them easily. “When an Oriental
Honey Buzzard landed on my neighbour’s roof at
Jalan TR 2/1, I was so excited.
112
It’s a migratory species that is common to the
Tropicana area and yet it travels long distances from
Siberia all the way to Indonesia! I got a snapshot of it
looking at me and that gave me an amazing feeling.”
His favourite spot for taking bird photos is at a lake
near the golf course at Jalan 8/2 where you can
find the Brahminy Kite, Osprey, Painted Stork, and
Crested Serpent Eagle among others. “There is also
a very friendly local white duck (Mallard) that will
come to you if you feed it,” adds Imran, who has a
collection of books on birds.
Impressed by the well-maintained green space at
TGCR, he notes that the bio-diversity of an area
directly points to a healthy environment and to some
extent, its inhabitants. In fact, Imran says some bird
species such as the Rufous Woodpecker, Sunda
Pygmy Woodpecker and Striated Heron as well as a
flock of Asian Glossy Starlings have nesting grounds
within the TGCR.

Striving to curb negligence towards
stray animals as well as control the
stray population, My Pets Haven
is a place for you to rescue needy
animals from neglect and abuse,
and give it a forever home.
Photo by Alvan Nee on Unsplash
My Pets Haven is exactly what
its name suggests; a haven for
animals rescued off the streets.
Located in Setia Alam, Shah
Alam, it serves as a temporary
shelter for the rescued animals
until they get adopted. One of
the centre’s objectives is that it
strongly advocates adopting, not
shopping for a pet so that stray
animals living on the streets can
be rehabilitated and rehomed.
These strays need our help
more than ever especially since
the Covid-19 pandemic began.
According to reports, Persatuan
Haiwan Terbiar Malaysia stated
that the number of stray animals
in the country has increased
by 70% due to the current
unprecedented situation.
114
My Pets Haven even provides
medical treatment to the rescued
animals if need be to make sure
that they are in the pink of health
before they leave for their forever
homes. All the rescue work is
carried out independently and
funded by donations from the
public as well as the personal
savings of the centre’s founder,
Aileen Lee Sor Geok. To pay
for the rent of the centre, My Pets
Haven provides services such
as grooming, boarding, and pet
food sales.

PURPLE
PUMKIE
Leading a healthy lifestyle isn’t the only thing needed to
boost the immune system. Eating well is crucial too and
at Purple Pumkie, you can get healthy, organically-grown,
and nutritious greens to strengthen your body’s defenses.
120
Established in 2020, Purple Pumkie Organic Farm most likely has the best and
healthiest produce thanks to its location - 900 metres above sea level in Gohtong
Jaya, Genting Highlands where the temperature is between 18°C and 32°C.
Better still, the vegetables are grown without the use of chemical pesticides and
fungicides, while clean water sourced from the nearby jungle is used for irrigation.
The farm’s unusual and catchy name takes inspiration from purple-coloured
vegetables, which contain anthocyanins (potent anti-oxidants) that can help
protect and heal cells from damage, and reduce the risk of contracting cancer,
diabetes, and cardiovascular and neurological diseases. Among the many types
of produce Purple Pumkie grows, which support and strengthen the immune
system include purple cabbage, sweet pointed cabbage, Italian lettuce, Japanese
cucumber, broccoli, cauliflower, cherry tomato, tomato, and brinjal.
Purple Pumkie welcomes keen
partners or distributors, in its
aim to work together to reduce
waste throughout the entire
supply chain. Please write to

“I didn’t know there was such a cool organic store near
me!” This is what Justlife staff members often hear
from walk-in customers when they give them a tour of
the shop. From organic produce, artisanal sourdough
breads, handcrafted tofu and tempeh, traditionallybrewed
soy sauce, organic aromatherapy and beauty
items, 100% compostable feminine care to oceanfriendly
household cleaning products, Justlife has it all.
Justlife believes that everyone can play a part in taking
care of the planet, simply by doing something that
most of us love - shopping!
Snail invasion Fifteen years ago when organic farming
was still unpopular in Malaysia, one of their organic
farmers discovered his crops were destroyed overnight
as a result of a snail invasion. Without pesticides, it
was a real struggle. Over time, he realised that the
snails came and left their shells behind. Only later did
he find out that this was a sign that his soil was greatly
deprived of minerals. Supporting organic goes beyond
providing clean food on our plates, it’s a choice we
can make to respect the relationship between people,
animals and the earth. Beyond the organic labels, every
product has a story
Local & artisanal Local produce come to us fresher,
tastier and more nutritious. Eating local brings us back
in connection to the seasons of our homeland, and our
ancestors’ wisdom on sustainable diet.
Earth-friendly diet Most people care deeply about
environmental changes such as climate change,
disappearing rainforests or wildlife but have never
thought that diet could be part of the reason. Justlife is
proud to be vegetarian, dairy- free and animal-friendly.
