MAY/JUNE 2021 EDITOR'S NOTE
EDITOR'S NOTE
It’s been more than a year since the COVID-19 pandemic hit the world.
While the virus has slowed down in its spread, it is still very much alive.
It has killed many, including people we know and love. Despite all the
grim outcomes, there are still some good ones. The pandemic has made
us value life more and realised that we cannot live without family and
friends. We are now seeing people from all walks of life coming together,
helping each other out.
Let us make helping others a habit, not something we only do in times
of crisis. At Tropicana, the spirit of helping, giving and sharing is an
important part of the organisation’s culture. Over the last 30 years,
Tropicana’s Founder, Tan Sri Dato’ Tan Chee Sing has been instrumental
in all charity initiatives. With the reinvigoration of Tropicana Foundation,
we have taken on more charitable acts. Our entire management team
embraces this giving spirit. Read more about this in the Trailblazer
section. We have also prepared a compilation of milestones we reached
this year. We look back on the joy that our staff spread through charity
events, the smiles we saw on our customers’ faces, and everything we
have accomplished so far.
4
Our cover personality Bryan Loo, founder of Tealive, also has a strong
conviction of giving back. He started Tealive with the goal to do more
than just make money. He wanted it to have a heart and soul from the
very beginning. For those who are still unsure of what to get your family
and friends for Christmas, we have a few suggestions that will surely
make them happy. Our Showcase section also has items inspired
by the exotic Indian culture in celebration of Diwali on 4 November.
With that, we wish you a Happy Diwali and Merry Christmas! Here’s to
a happy, healthy, and blessed 2022 and beyond!

BLOOD DONATION DRIVE
Every year, millions of people donate blood to help save
the lives of others. The blood is used for transfusion to
patients who require it, and during critical situations in
which a patient or accident victim suffers from massive
blood loss. One pint of donated blood can save up to 3
lives during these cases. In order to support the National
Blood Bank, Tropicana held a Blood Donation Drive, which
saw 67 of its staff members taking part during which 40
bags of blood were collected.
Organised by Tropicana Foundation, the Blood Donation
Drive took place on 30 September from 10am to 4pm at
the Tropicana Experiential Hall in the Tropicana Gardens
Office Tower. Open to all staff members of Tropicana, the
response was very encouraging. Many of them signed up
and donated blood during the session. Participants in the
blood drive came from various departments.
44
It was a great sight to see them all pumped up to do their
part to help others. These donors could inspire others
to do so as well, which would raise awareness about
the importance of donating blood. All participants were
screened and tested by volunteers from the National Blood
Bank throughout the day. Strict compliance of the SOP was
observed at all times to curb the spread of Covid-19. For
their time, effort, and bravery, complimentary vouchers
were given to all donors as a token of appreciation.

important nutrients such as protein and vitamin D. Fish is also
a great source of omega-3 fatty acids, which are incredibly
important for one’s body and brain.
Uncle Kentang, who got his nickname by donating potatoes

The location is undoubtedly a highlight of this

Built around its own mineral hot spring, its own woods,

TEALIVE’S
SWEET DEAL
Tealive caters to more than just the taste buds of
its customers. As a socially responsible brand, it is
committed to helping society and preserving the
environment, its founder Bryan Loo shared with us.
When you think of a tea brand, it conjures images of someone sipping a cup of
tea and enjoying the moment. But for Tealive, there is more to its business than
just selling bubble tea and other beverages. Its vision is to give back to society
as well as contribute to preserving the planet. “The ultimate brand purpose
of Tealive is to bring joy to people’s lives through tea. When we started the
brand we wanted it to be a brand with a purpose” said Bryan Loo, founder and
CEO of Loob Holding Sdn Bhd, Tealive’s holding company. He added that his
inspiration for starting the company was because he wanted it to be more than
just a money-making machine; he wanted it to have a heart and soul.
67
This explains why, Tealive often conducts Corporate Social Responsibility
(“CSR”) activities. Among the objectives are to reach out to the unfortunate
with food and service, support frontliners, and reduce food waste.
The company also invites volunteers from among its staff who will then lead
the charity programmes or activities, which in turn motivate and empower
them. Bryan also tries to commit himself by joining these efforts. “I’ve spent
time with other volunteers handing out food (from more than 10 brands under
the company) to the homeless. I was moved by the number of people who
turned up, and it was a sobering sight seeing so many homeless people in KL,”
he recalled.

In addition to CSR initiatives, Tealive also cares for the environment. It now
has a strawless reusable cup for bubble tea. “We are the first in the world to
create this product together with a Japanese designer and manufacturer.
Launched last year, the decision was influenced by our commitment to
reduce our single-use straws and cups by 20 percent in the coming years,”
said Bryan. Guided by his life-long belief to “Think Big, Start Small, Scale
Fast”, Tealive has 660 outlets in Malaysia, and 40 to 50 in the UK, Australia
and Southeast Asia.
Its outlet in Tropicana Gardens Mall, Petaling Jaya is one of the perfect
locations, noted Bryan. “Tropicana Gardens Mall is a large suburban mall
that provides Tealive a great location for business. The local community
often hangs out here due to its strategic spot.” Right now, he is excited
about his new mansion in Tropicana Indah, Petaling Jaya. “It will be ready
next year and consists of a main house plus a club house. I have a big
family so the club house will be a great place for my children, nieces and
nephews to swim and play.” The 36-year-old currently lives in Tropicana
Indah as well. “It’s an area my family and I are familiar with. Tropicana
Indah is a peaceful place and very convenient since it has easy access to
grocery stores, restaurants, schools, Tropicana Gardens Mall, and is close
to my office in Kota Damansara.”

DUCK CHRISTMAS CRACKERS
78
Duck and Chesnut Filling
4 skinless duck breasts cut into 1cm dice
2 onions, cut into 1cm dice
12 mushrooms cut into 1cm dice
100g dried apricot, 0.5cm dice
200g chestnut cooked, 1cm dice
300ml duck stock
200ml half-fat crème fraiche
75ml rapeseed oil
1 pinch sea salt
1 pinch black pepper
Filo Pastry
8 filo pastry sheets
100g butter, melted
To Serve
200ml half-fat crème fraiche
1/2 tsp smoked paprika
2 tsp chives, chopped
Method
1. Place a large saucepan over a medium heat
and add oil. Once hot, add the onions and stir
until soft and golden.
2. Then, stir in the duck and cook until brown,
approximately 5 minutes.
3. Add mushroom and cook for a further 5
minutes.
4. Add dried apricot and chicken stock, and
reduce until the pan is almost dry.
5. Stir in the crème fraiche and then season to
taste. Transfer this mixture to a bowl and allow
to cool. Once cool, store in the fridge for 20
minutes until cold and set.
6. Lay a sheet of filo pastry on a work surface.
Brush 1 half of the sheet with butter and fold
over to create 1 double-layered square. Repeat
with the remaining filo to make 8 doublelayered
squares.
7. Divide the mix into 8 portions and shape
each portion into a cylinder.
8. Place a cylinder of the duck mixture across
the middle of a square of pastry towards the
front edge. Fold the edge into the filling and roll
to make a cylinder. Just before getting to the
opposite edge, brush with melted butter to seal
9. Twist the ends of the pastry to make it look
like a cracker - trim off some pastry if it looks
too big. Brush the whole cracker lightly with
melted butter and place on a non-stick baking
tray. Repeat to make more crackers.
10. Preheat the oven to 170°C.
11. Place the baking tray of crackers in the
middle of the oven for 20 minutes, or until
golden brown.
12. Meanwhile, in a bowl, fold the paprika and
chives into the crème fraiche.
13. Once the crackers are cooked, remove
and serve with a dollop of the crème fraiche on
the side.

TROPICANA CREATED NATION’S
FIRST SUSTAINABLE ECOSYSTEM
AT TROPICANA GOLF & COUNTRY
RESORT
Tropicana launches Malaysia’s first
ever sustainable ecosystem with
the introduction of dragonflies. The
objective is to control the mosquito
population and to create a new
ecotourism attraction for golfers and
visitors alike.

THE BRAND-NEW LOOK OF

Tropicana unveiled the latest look
for the T Privilege Card at Tropicana
Experiential Hall. Beyond the updated
aesthetics, card owners can expect to
enjoy more privileges at participating
outlets and stores.

NOVEMBER
TROPICANA BRINGS FESTIVE JOY
TO UNDERPRIVILEGED CHILDREN
Tropicana Foundation organised
a special Christmas celebration at
selected homes for underprivileged
children. It was a day of festivities
where the children got to experience
the wonders of Christmas.
We look forward
to 2022 and we are
optimistic that things
will improve. We will
continue the good
fight and help those
in need. Our journey
to redefine the art of
living continues next
year as we have lined
up a series of exciting
and memorable events.
Your support over the
years will continue to
inspire us to do better
and we will certainly
give our best.

NOV/DEC 2021 TRAILBLAZER
REINVIGORATION
OF TROPICANA FOUNDATION
140
TAN SRI DATO' TAN CHEE SING
Over the last 30 years,
Tropicana’s Founder, Tan
Sri Dato’ Tan Chee Sing has
been instrumental in all our
charity initiatives. Now that
the Tropicana Foundation
(Tropicana’s arm for all CSR
projects) is reinvigorated,
we have taken on more
charitable acts, and our entire
management team embraces
this giving spirit.
In 2020 alone, we
contributed more than
RM5.3 million in cash and
other donation initiatives
to over 37 underprivileged
homes and associations
all across Malaysia. So
far, this year, we have
already contributed
over RM2.2 million to
115 underprivileged
homes, associations and
organisations in the country.
TROPICANA MAGAZINE
SOCIAL IMPACT The social impact
Tropicana Foundation has made since
2020 until now is astounding. This
includes making huge donations to
over 30 orphanages, old folks homes,
and special needs associations,
reaching out to more than 250,000
people. The Foundation also donated
over 15,000 hot meals, 3,300 kg
of Patin fish and fresh produce,
RM43,000 worth of dry goods,
and 90 sets of school bags with
school supplies to underprivileged
communities throughout several
lockdown periods and local
festivities.
WELLNESS As disease and illness
becomes more prevalent, the foundation
provided medical equipment to help
ease the burden of frontliners and
healthcare workers. This includes
donating over RM2.2 million worth of
medical equipment, beds, wheelchairs,
protective gear, and hazmat suits
for COVID-19 relief efforts in more
than 5 states in Malaysia. To support
the Government’s efforts to make
the National COVID-19 Immunisation
Programme (“PICK”) a success,
Tropicana Gardens Mall Convention
Centre hosted Program Vaksin Selangor
(“SELVAX”) as one of the five large
vaccination centres (“PPV”). This centre
committed more than RM1 million
for utility, operations, logistics, and
manpower costs.
INTERNAL In order to maintain
the health and welfare of
over 1,300 staff members, the
Tropicana management provided
care packs (containing masks,
hand sanitisers, and personal
cutlery sets), food packs,
essential supplies, and extended
COVID-19 vaccination to workers
that had not been vaccinated to
create a conducive environment
free of potential risks.
