CREATE Captain (CEO)

Acknowledgement of Country

CREATE would like to acknowledge Aboriginal and Torres Strait

Islander peoples as Australia’s first people and Traditional

Custodians. We value their cultures, identities, and continuing

connection to country, waters, kin and community.

clubCREATE’s Editorial Policy

clubCREATE Magazine is produced by

CREATE Foundation for children and

young people in care. This magazine

contains information about CREATE

programs that create a better life for

kids in care and also has articles and

artworks by clubCREATE members.

It’s really important to us that children

and young people in care are safe and

protected and we do our utmost to

ensure their privacy. For safety

reasons state laws don’t allow the faces

of kids in care to be published without

proper permission. So please

understand that if these young people

are not reflective of the story or blurred

it is for safety and legal reasons. All

contributions to be considered for the

magazine can be submitted by email:

clubCREATE@create.org.au or post:

to provide feedback on

the care system so it

can be better for those

who are, or will be, in

Where CREATE is

heading next!

CREATE has been busy listening to young people like YOU to

find out what really matters!

HOW:

Through a bunch of surveys, hundreds of kids shared their ideas

about what’s working, what could be better, and how CREATE

can do more to help.

NOW WHAT:

CREATE has a brand-new plan (we call it a Strategic Plan) but it’s

just writing down what we want to make happen at CREATE to

make a real difference for kids in care.

Ruby, one of our awesome clubCREATE members, asked our

CREATE Captain, Imogen, all the important questions about this

plan.

What do you see CREATE doing over the next

few years that will give care experienced

young people the chance to thrive?

At CREATE, we’re all about listening to young people in care and

helping them feel seen, heard, and supported. Over the next few

years, we want to:

Be a safe and fun place where kids and young people can

connect, belong, and feel empowered.

Work with young people to make big changes to the care system

so everyone has a better experience.

IMOGEN

RUBY

Grow our programs and reach more young people, including those

in regional areas, so no one misses out.

How do you hope to

overcome the

challenges that CREATE

experiences?

Cool Activity for You!

Help Gus and his friends find his way to Connect, Empower and

Change with clubCREATE!

We face challenges, but we’re

strong because:

We listen to young people and include

their voices in everything we do.

We have an amazing team

who care about making a

difference.

We work with partners to make

big, positive changes

together.

8

We’re creative and always

find new ways to help.

Tandara chats Mental

Health

Tandara, one of our awesome

members, has written an

article about mental health and

disability to help us all learn

more. Thanks Tandara for

sharing this with us!

“Hi guys, I’m Tandara. I’m 18 years

old. I’m an Aboriginal young person

who lived in the care system since

young. I have loads of siblings

including some I haven’t met. I been

in the care system since the age of 5

years old, now 18. I love art, music,

drawing, colouring and anything

creative. I love finding out family

research to find my connection to

family and connection to Country.

When I’m older I would love to be a

learning support Aboriginal teacher

as I believe young people and

children need support.”

“I remind myself.

I will recover from my mental health.

I will be ok from my faded self.

I hope I’m ok because of the feeling I felt.”

Mental Health

Mental health is about how we feel, think, and handle life’s ups and

downs. It helps us deal with stress and enjoy everyday life.

Looking after your mental health:

✅ Do something fun you enjoy

✅ Move your body and play

✅ Set little goals

✅ Rest and relax

✅ Have a yummy snack or drink

✅ What to do when you’re feeling down:

✅ Talk to a friend or family member

✅ Do something fun you love

✅ Spend time outside

✅ Get plenty of rest

If you need help call Kids Helpline: 1800 55 1800

This is advice from a

young person with lived

experience in care, not a

medical professional.
