Participating in sports is about more than just staying in shape. It assists us in developing and enhancing our
confidence levels. Furthermore, being physically active can protect us against ailments such as arthritis, heart disease,
and diabetes. Golf is one of the recommended sports in this Covid-19 era, says our cover personality, KP Low. “Golf is a
sport with natural social distancing measures as the course is spread out over hundreds of acres. Out of the four to five
hours playing golf, probably more than 90 percent is spent at least two metres away from your flightmates,” explains
the co-founder and MD of MST Golf. Speaking of fitness, we’ve got it all covered for you. Check out write-ups on Easy
Fitness Hacks, Smart Sports Gadgets, healthy meals at Tropicana Gardens Mall and Tropicana Avenue, and more!
To mark World Environment Day on June 5, we focus on some of the world’s greenest golf courses, including Tropicana
Golf & Country Resort, as well as Tropicana’s sustainability commitments and innovative approaches to eco-friendly
township development. Our Genting Highlands Special is this edition’s highlight. Come on a Genting Highlands trip with
us and experience life at the peak. Tropicana WindCity is a new mega development for the highlands by Tropicana.
It will include Tropicana Grandhill, Tropicana Paradise, and Tropicana Avalon, all of which feature novel lifestyle
components.

BRINGING NATURE
INDOORS
Indoor plants are a great way to add a touch of nature to your
living space while making the air in your home healthier
10
TROPICANA MAGAZINE
Located at Tropicana Gardens Mall, Plant Meets Art is a plant shop that
combines elements of art into its bouquet creations. Using flowers, stems,
moss and roots; incorporated with visual components such as colour, form,
line, shape and texture - which form the “art” element - this shop specialises
in living creations. Plant Meets Art director, Linda Hooi says, “We sell green
bouquets, terrariums, pots, vases, and a small collection of home décor. We
also provide services like customised bouquets, indoor landscapes and office
decorating.” Hooi chooses plants that are easy to care for, with a preference
for low-light plants and those that are drought-tolerant. In creating a visually
appealing home with plants, Hooi believes that aesthetics play a crucial
role in evoking feelings of tranquility, adding that other elements in the
space must also be in perfect harmony. Aside from aesthetics, plant health
is also important. According to Hooi, a happy and thriving plant will evoke
that tranquil feeling in any space. For decorating ideas, Hooi suggest using
standalone plants. An individual potted plant that is big enough can make a
statement and become a major feature, whether it is on the table or on the
floor. A tall fiddle leaf plant can be placed on a stand next to the television
cabinet, or a money plant placed individually on the kitchen table. Grouping
plants in odd numbers of three or five will lend a more casual look. For a
natural looking arrangement, group plants with differing heights.

BENEFITS OF BENTONG
GINGER
Bentong ginger can be used for many things, from
improving health to enhancing food flavour
If you mention Bentong, a sleepy district in Pahang, there’s a good chance that the word
ginger will come up in conversation. Within the district is a small town called Bukit Tinggi,
famous for its rhizome, which is more aromatic, spicy, and pricey than regular ginger. Due
to its high quality and demand, Bentong Ginger, as it is called, is the most popular ginger in
Malaysia. Farmers who practise commercial agriculture have been planting this ginger on the
hilly slopes of Bukit Tinggi for over a century. Apparently, early migrants from Southern China
brought ginger with them because they used it extensively in their cooking. Interestingly, they
discovered that ginger grew better in Bukit Tinggi than it did back in their homeland!
As a result of the clean, fresh air and fertile soil that the temperate region is blessed with,
Bentong ginger is rich in nutrients such as gingerol, which has medicinal benefits. It can aid
in the relief of nausea, and vomiting. Bentong ginger can also help prevent colds, control
cholesterol, and treat respiratory conditions. It has a thinner skin and can be consumed
immediately after cleaning. What’s more, Bentong ginger retains its freshness for up to a month,
whereas regular ginger begins to dry and shrink after one to two weeks. In the kitchen, ginger
can be used in many ways. To flavour soups and rice, whole, unpeeled ginger is added to water
and other cooking liquids. In some cuisines, pickled ginger is used as a condiment. Fried rice and
stir-fries, meat marinades and glazes, and vinaigrettes all benefit from minced ginger.

TROPICANA GOLF & COUNTRY RESORT (“TGCR”), MALAYSIA
The beauty of TGCR is that its greenery has a positive impact on the
environment while providing golfers with a breathtaking and natural
landscape. The golf course takes pride in many other ways it contributes
to environmental preservation. For example, a pond on the course is
designed to attract dragonflies and serve as a mosquito biocontrol.
Unlike chemical control, it is an eco-friendly solution to eliminate
mosquitoes. Furthermore, the presence of dragonflies indicates that
the water is clean and that the oxygen levels are stable. At 625 acres,
TGCR also supports a diverse plant life that benefits the environment by
absorbing and filtering rain, providing wildlife habitat, and reducing noise
pollution. It’s no surprise that some migratory bird species that travel
long distances from Siberia to Indonesia can be found here!

To mark World Environment
Day on June 5, we present
Nor Tijan Firdaus's artworks,
which address environmental
and consumerist issues.
The 36-year-old, who
holds a Master’s degree in
Fine Art and Technology from Universiti Teknologi
Mara (“UiTM”), has been incorporating leftover
materials from electronic components into her
art pieces in recent years. Many of her artworks,
which merge sculpture and colour on canvas,
have addressed questions of consumerism and
mankind’s relationship with the environment in an
oblique manner. Her striking and thought-provoking
creations may possibly inspire us to believe that it
is never too late to save our planet and that we will
be able to stop further damage and begin to respect
and repair it. According to Zena Khan, curator at
AFK Collection in Kuala Lumpur where some of Nor
Tijan’s artworks are available, the artist grounds her
art in a research-based approach, which originates
from her background in art academia.
“At UiTM she pursued a Major in Sculpture and Minor
in Painting, graduating with an Honours degree after
mastering the technical complexities of creating art
in these two genres. Understanding her ability to
work well in both two and three-dimensional planes,
her capacity to build the wall sculptures that have
become her mainstay, with easily readable, relief-like
surfaces, becomes clear. Her conceptual impetus
has roots in her Master’s degree in Fine Art, where
she became increasingly concerned with the effects
of consumerism on sustainability and our everyday
This artwork titled Just Scan It includes discarded
computer and smartphone parts
lives,” Zena explains. She adds that Nor Tijan had
a young family at the time of her Masters and
was aware of the quantity of rubbish she was
suddenly amassing, compared to her life as a
single woman.Commercialism concerns surfaced,
including how we buy, replace, and update not
only phones and computers, but also clothes,
toys, and furniture. Most of them are designed
objects, however sustainability was not a factor in
their creation.
Surrounded by these items, most of which
were destined for the trash, Nor Tijan pondered
if she could repurpose them as pieces of art.
Reassessing post-consumer material intended to
be waste immediately provided broader critical
context to her practice. “Sifting through materials
sourced from her own home, or purchased
from friends, and recycling and waste plants,
she generates commentary into sustainability,
materialism and also post-formalism,” Zena
elaborates. E-waste in particular, with its
vivid colours and intricate details, provided
a great starting point for her to create forms
and aesthetics that speak about the Malaysian
predicament while exploring new approaches to
sculpture and assemblage art.

76
TROPICANA MAGAZINE
Tropicana takes pleasure in making every attempt
to ensure that everyone obtains the best, not just in
terms of design, materials, and cost, but also in terms
of homeowner and environmental well-being. When
it comes to the latter, one good example is Tropicana
Heights, a sustainable township development in Kajang
with a 16-acre Central Park and 750-metre linear lake.
Tree transplantation is one of many environmentally
friendly aspects of the development. Throughout
Tropicana Heights, 400 mature khaya and 15 rain trees
that were already on-site were replanted to support the
current roadway system and land parcel development
of individual precincts.
The use of the original topography is also
commendable. Tropicana had the option of levelling
the land and starting over with a new concept, but
by preserving the original topography, excavation
and soil erosion were greatly reduced. The gentle
valleys, relatively flat expanse of fairways, and existing
central lake added a dimension to the landscapes that
is distinctively Tropicana Heights - and honours the
land for its original formation. Gross Pollutant Traps
(“GPTs”) are also installed at various points throughout
the development. These filters capture storm water
pollution before it enters the waterways. GPTs catch
the majority of litter and silt before it reaches any
waterway. The contents of the GPTs are regularly
emptied and disposed of in a landfill.
The Tropicana Heights Clubhouse, as well as the
Parkfield Residences Management Office and
Multipurpose Hall, all have rainwater harvesting
systems. Water collected from the roof is filtered
into storage tanks to be used for the property’s
landscaping needs. But the linear lake is without a
doubt the largest rainwater harvesting system. As for
the landscaping cuttings, they are taken to a compost
heap and converted into fertiliser for the soil. This is
distributed for use throughout the property to aid in
the regeneration of the soil and vegetation growth. LED
lights are installed throughout the park, main public
buildings, and internal roadway. These energy-efficient
lights will reduce the development’s overall power
consumption over time, and provide significant savings
in operational costs.

TROPICANA MAGAZINE
WITH KP LOW
MST Golf co-founder and Managing Director, KP Low chats
with us about the store at Tropicana Gardens Mall, and more
79
Tropicana: Can you tell us more about the MST Golf store at Tropicana Gardens Mall?
Low: MST Golf at Tropicana Gardens Mall occupies about 36,000 square feet with a 45-metre
frontage. There are four storefronts - MST Golf Super Store, MST Athleisure Wear, MST Golf
Arena and Tee Box Restaurant & Bar, all internally connected. Additionally, Golf Lab is a
state-of-the-art teaching and club-fitting facility where golfers can work on their swings with
teaching pros or get custom-fitted by qualified fitters.
MAY/JUNE 2022 COVER STORY
Tropicana: How different is it from other golf stores?
Low: This store showcases MST Golf’s latest elevated retail
concept, combining shopping, playing, learning, dining, and
leisure to deliver a total consumer experience. For golfers, MST
Golf Super Store houses the most complete selection across all
product categories from global golf brands. And, regardless
whether you’re a golfer or not, MST Athleisure Wear offers the
latest collections from leading sports and high-street brands.
Tropicana: What factors influenced the choice to open a MST
Golf store at Tropicana Gardens Mall?
Low: Location, location, location! It’s our anchor store in that
area and is ideally located to serve our target consumers
from a number of affluent and vibrant townships such as Kota
Damansara, Mutiara Damansara, Damansara Perdana, Bandar
Utama, and Taman Tun Dr Ismail.
Tropicana: What are the advantages of having a store at
Tropicana Gardens Mall?
Low: It‘s easy for our customers to find us and convenient for
them to get in and out of Tropicana Gardens Mall. The long
frontage allows us to present multiple storefronts to attract
different consumers, including non-golfers.
80
Tropicana: What would you recommend a potential customer
purchase at the MST Golf store, Tropicana Gardens Mall?
Low: They are many types of golfers, from beginners and
social golfers to skilled players and professionals, so I would
make recommendations based on their playing abilities and
needs. From a technical standpoint, MST Golf Super Store is
staffed with experienced golf consultants and qualified clubfitters
who will be able to recommend the ideal equipment
based on the customer’s physique, swing speed, ability and
shot tendencies. For non-golfers, I would show them the latest
athleisure wear collections which are made of performance
fabrics for easy wear and care.
Tropicana: As a golfer, what do you think of Tropicana Golf &
Country Resort?
Low: TGCR is one of the most prestigious golf clubs in Malaysia
with a full range of golf, sports, recreational, and F&B facilities.
The golf course is definitely one of the best maintained in
the region. To me, it plays quite long, and the greens are
very undulating and tricky. If you play to your handicap at
Tropicana, then you are probably a “buaya” (an ace) at other
courses!
Tropicana: Would you by any chance own a Tropicana
property?
Low: Not yet! But I’m keeping an eye out for one.

The most essential activewear is included in a high-performance wardrobe,
and it is done in its purest form while remaining closely linked to the
sporting and fashion worlds. “At the beginning of the design process I
always start with one key piece that references a particular sport. Last
season was all about the tennis dress whereas this collection sees the
introduction of a wide-leg basketball warm-up trouser inspired by my
travels to the US.
“My vintage wardrobe also plays a big part in the look and feel of each
capsule, the Reebok M65 Parka nods to one of my favourite jackets - we’ve
cropped it, cut it to the waist and fitted it with wide pockets so it can be
worn all day long,” explains Victoria. Feminine proportions are reworked,
and silhouettes are cropped and boxy to emphasise the waist. The yarns
in the seamless series are woven tighter for a more compact texture,
twisting to allow for body movement while sculpting and supporting.

PETS AS HEALERS
Animals can help humans cope with and recover from a variety of
physical and mental health issues
Many physical and mental issues can be alleviated by
interacting with a loving pet. Pet therapy, as it is called,
is administered by a doctor or therapist overseeing the
patient’s treatment, allowing individuals to interact with a
trained animal in the presence of the animal’s caretaker or
handler.
The most common pets used in pet therapy are dogs
and cats. Horses, guinea pigs, fish, and other animals
that match the screening criteria may also be used. The
type of animal chosen is determined by the therapeutic
aims of the individual’s treatment plan. A pet therapy
programme’s objectives may include enhancing motor
skills and joint mobility, enhancing either assisted or
independent movement, boosting self-esteem, increasing
verbal communication, and enhancing social skills, among
others. Other advantages of pet therapy is that it makes the
individual happier and less depressed, promotes a positive
mindset, and helps children learn empathic and nurturing
skills. Apart from these, pet therapy can help lower blood
pressure and improve cardiovascular health. It also has the
ability to release endorphins, which have a relaxing effect.
This can help to reduce pain, tension, and improve one’s
general mental health.

As a responsible developer and pioneer of residential
resort-style living, Tropicana consistently considers the link
between residents and the environment in its landscape
design. The township and individual residential parcels
are designed by award-winning landscape architects. “The
landscape concept for each parcel is uniquely tailored
individually to create an identity of its own but still keeping
the design DNA of Tropicana,” says Jimmy Khoo, Deputy
GM, Planning & Design Department. Tropicana focuses on
landscape design for each township to give enough green
space to create Central Parks with lakes. “A park life full
of greenery is the mainstay of life in all of our township
development.” The Central Parks are created with the
demands of the user demography in mind, as well as the
existing landform of each township. The Central Parks at
Tropicana Heights and Tropicana Aman, for example, are
designed to closely resemble suburban green spaces that
encourage and protect the natural ecosystem.
“At Tropicana Aman Central Park, around 2,400 trees and
palms have been planted, creating a warm and inviting
setting. On top of these, we are also creating woodlands
within the Central Park which contribute to another 4,000
numbers of trees in sapling form,” says Jimmy. Composting
is also a common practice with Tropicana Aman and
Tropicana Heights landscape contractors. Non-woody green
waste like leaves, grass clippings, weeds, and garden plant
trimmings create excellent compost. In addition, Tropicana
has been incorporating LED landscape lightings for recent
developments. In comparison to traditional light bulbs,
LEDs consume less energy. Residents may save money
on monthly operation and management costs while also
putting less strain on the energy grid.
For high-rise developments, Tropicana creates vertical
green spaces on building facades. Climbers are planted on
the exteriors of Tropicana Grande and Tropicana Metropark
Pandora Residences, which help to clean the air, decrease
and regulate the temperature, and keep the environment
healthy. At Tropicana Golf & Country Resort (“TGCR”), a
pond was created to attract dragonflies and use them as
a biocontrol for mosquitoes. Unlike chemical treatment,
it is an eco-friendly solution to eliminate mosquitoes.
Dragonflies also signal pure water and stable oxygen levels.

SALAD ATELIER
Salad Atelier was founded on the principle of providing healthy
whole foods in response to the country’s dramatic rise in
obesity and noncommunicable disease rates. Established in
2014, Salad Atelier’s mission is to encourage people to go
green with their food choices and to nourish themselves with
real, unprocessed ingredients. It aspires to be the go-to spot
for busy Malaysians and expats who are tired of food that is
overly processed and seasoned. After six years in the F&B
industry, Salad Atelier founders noticed that while Malaysians
strive for a healthy lifestyle, many struggle to find a consistent
supply of the perfect, healthy meal. As a result, salad packages
with brown rice, and poke bowls are now available on its
delivery platform, providing the community with a healthy
meal solution. Its mission remains the same since its inception:
to provide healthy food to everyone while also encouraging
sustainable eating habits.
