cash and Deepavali red packets for the 24 kids at Sai Pandian

FENG SHUI-FRIENDLY Fish
To amplify feng shui energies, here's a guide on
selecting the ideal fish
46
TROPICANA MAGAZINE
When considering the finest feng shui fish, the Goldfish stands out as
the most cost-effective, commonly chosen, and uncomplicated option.
It's often recommended for aquariums due to its symbolism of beauty
and harmony.
47
The Guppy fish, is also highly favoured for feng shui reasons as it
brings a sense of joy to any living space with its wide range of colours,
including shades of red, blue, grey, and more.
Furthermore, their easy upkeep makes them a hassle-free choice.
Maintaining their well-being is as simple as regularly cleaning a
freshwater tank and providing a diverse range of plants and substrates.
Then there is the Flowerhorn fish, which is celebrated for its striking
beauty and the belief that it brings great luck and love to its owner. Often
chosen to foster a joyful home environment and the well-being of all
family members, it's a species that exudes positivity.

Koi fish attracts positive energy and good luck
Another excellent choice is the Black Moor Goldfish, regarded
as one of the most favourable feng shui fish for your aquarium.
It's believed to dispel potential negative influences in your
home, replacing them with positive energy.
One of the top choices in feng shui fish is the Arowana,
often referred to as the Dragon Fish. This majestic species
symbolises wealth, power, health, and happiness in feng shui
practice. However, due to its endangered status, owning and
caring for an Arowana can be quite costly.
Also thought to usher in positive vibes and good luck is the
Koi. Keeping Koi fish in your home or garden pond is believed
to attract positive energy and good luck. Their graceful
and peaceful presence is considered to foster a calm and
harmonious ambiance.
Koi fish also embodies qualities of determination, prosperity,
and success in feng shui. This species signifies the desire for
both personal and career development.
Additionally, Koi fish come in various vibrant colours,
with each hue holding significance for different aspects
of life. For instance, the red Koi is a symbol of love and
relationships, while the gold Koi represents affluence and
abundance.

The unbroken spirit of superstar Selena Gomez
I kept it all together enough to

JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2024 TRAILBLAZER
64
Selena Marie Gomez, born on July 22, 1992, in Grand Prairie,
Texas, to Ricardo Joel Gomez and former stage actress Mandy
Teefey, carries a namesake tribute to the late Tejano singer
Selena Quintanilla.
Born into financial struggles, Selena's mother, who was only
16 at the time, did her best to provide despite the challenges.
The family's hardships resulted in times when they had to
scrounge for coins just to buy gas and walk to the nearby
store with a dollar budget for dinner.
Reflecting on her past, she acknowledges her mother's
strength, stating, "She gave up everything for me, had three
jobs, supported me, sacrificed her life for me." Despite the
setbacks, Selena found solace in her close relationship with her
grandparents, who played a significant role in her upbringing,
nurturing her until she achieved success in show business.
The multifaceted artist, known for her roles as a singer,
songwriter, actress, businesswoman, and producer, has
amassed a remarkable collection of accolades. Among her
achievements are an American Music Award, a Billboard
Music Award, two MTV Video Music Awards, and breaking
16 Guinness World Records. Furthermore, she has garnered
nominations for two Grammy Awards, a Golden Globe
Award, and four Emmy Awards. Recognised as one of the
most influential figures on social media, Selena holds the
distinction of being the most-followed woman on Instagram,
boasting 429 million followers, and is among the topfollowed
individuals on Twitter. Her impact extends beyond
entertainment, as evidenced by her inclusion in the Time 100
list in 2020 and being honoured as Billboard's Woman of the
Year in 2017.
In philanthropy, Selena actively collaborates with diverse
charitable organisations, dedicating her efforts to promoting
awareness on issues such as mental health, gender equality,
racial equality, and LGBT rights. Serving as a UNICEF
ambassador since 2009, she held the distinction of being the
youngest for many years. Demonstrating a deep commitment
to mental health advocacy, she also established the nonprofit
Rare Impact Fund, aiming to raise USD100 (RM467)
million over the next decade to bolster initiatives focused on
mental health awareness.
Selena faced health challenges when diagnosed with lupus
between 2012 and early 2014. In September 2017, she shared
on Instagram that she had undergone a kidney transplant
due to the condition, with her friend, actress Francia Raisa as
the donor. Complications arose during the surgery, requiring
emergency intervention to construct a new artery using a
vein from her leg.
The artist has been candid about her battles with anxiety and
depression, seeking therapy in her early twenties and undergoing
treatment. Reaching 100 million Instagram followers triggered a
moment of distress, leading to intermittent breaks from social
media, influenced by negative comments. Selena disclosed her
bipolar disorder diagnosis in April 2020.
In October 2022, she had to cancel an appearance on The
Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon after testing positive for
Covid-19. Additionally, in November 2022, she shared that
she experienced an episode of psychosis in 2018.
Despite her exceptional beauty, talent, and intelligence,
Selena has faced challenges in the realm of love. In 2008,
she dated singer Nick Jonas, featuring in the music video for
his band's song ‘Burnin' Up’. From December 2010 to March
2018, Selena experienced an on-again, off-again relationship
with Canadian singer Justin Bieber. In 2015, a brief romance
with Russian-German DJ Zedd followed the recording of
their collaborative song ‘I Want You to Know’. However, the
relationship concluded later that year. In January 2017, Selena
entered a relationship with Canadian singer-songwriter the
Weeknd, leading to a temporary cohabitation in September
before parting ways a month later.
Amidst her triumphs and trials, Selena's fanbase remains deeply
devoted. Admirers often express that she has been a guiding
force, imparting lessons on embracing one's beauty, cultivating
self-love, and extending respect and assistance to others.
Her influence emphasises the strength found in uplifting
others rather than tearing them down. Selena encourages the
idea that each individual is perfect just as they are and should
not conform for anyone. Above all, she imparts the wisdom
that embracing one's uniqueness is the key to discovering
true beauty.

The 10-year Genting Integrated Tourism Plan (“GITP”), enacted

Feng Shui
AT HOME
Feng shui aims to attract positive energy for luck,
wealth, health, and harmonious relationships
Brighten up your entrance
Your house’s entryway symbolises the way energy flows into your home
and life. Your front door acts as the “mouth of `qi’ (energy)”, making it a
crucial focal point for creating positive feng shui. Begin by decluttering
and clearing any obstructions that often accumulate at the entrance,
ensuring it remains relatively uncluttered while not necessarily empty.
Keep windows clean
Maintain positive feng shui in your home by keeping your windows clean.
Clear, sparkling windows allow abundant sunlight to enter, naturally
invigorating your space and showcasing its colours and features.
Embrace more light to create a more expansive, vibrant, and energetic
atmosphere
73
Plants bring vitality
In feng shui, plants symbolise life energy, acting as a direct link to nature
that injects vibrancy into your living space. Think of green plants as a
revitalising elixir for your home, infusing it with freshness and vitality.
Green, thriving plants are a fundamental element of feng shui in your
living environment.

Add a water feature
In feng shui philosophy, water is both a tangible symbol of wealth and
a representation of abundance. To invite positive energy and prosperity
into your life, a widely endorsed practice is to strategically position an
aquarium or a soothing fountain in the vicinity of your home’s entrance or
just outside the main doorway.
Fix damaged items
Feng shui generally recommends either repairing broken items or, if
they cannot be repaired, discarding them. Broken items symbolise
suffering and attract problems. Address any household issues, such
as leaks, promptly, as water can carry away positive energy. It’s also
recommended to keep the toilet seat down and the door closed for
good feng shui.
• To promote positive feng shui
in your bedroom, position
nightstands on both sides of
the bed.
• It's not recommended to have
mirrors facing the bed in feng
shui, as it can deplete your “qi”
during sleep.
• Avoid aligning the stove and
refrigerator with the main door
to prevent potential wealth
loss or outside interference.
• To maintain good feng
shui, it’s best to prevent the
bathroom door from aligning
with your bed, as it can affect
your health.
• Place a mirror in the dining
room to reflect the dining
table, symbolically doubling
the amount of food and
enhancing abundance.
75
• If your main door faces your
neighbour’s door, place two
snake plants with pointed
leaves to counter clashing
energies, deflecting negativity.

Manu Ram ‘wanted to do something exceptional’
as he felt really trapped, worthless and wanted to
make a difference
76
Manu at A'Famosa, triumphant
after conquering the journey
TROPICANA MAGAZINE
Manu Ram gained attention for embarking
on a journey by foot from his residence
in Damansara Utama to the A’Famosa
fortress in Melaka. Commencing his walk on
November 2, 2023 at 6.37am, he reached
his destination on November 9, 2023 at
8.44am, spending a total of 170 hours and
seven minutes covering the 159km distance.
Following the challenging trek, the
question arises: What are his sentiments
after accomplishing the arduous journey?
wish to achieve is a balanced and
satisfactory approach.”
He chose to walk to A’Famosa because
of his love for history and the fact that he
had never been there before.
Manu bought essential items like an
umbrella, raincoat, and power bank for the
journey, storing them in his laptop bag,
along with extra clothes, a first aid kit, and
snacks from his sister-in-law.
From left: When he couldn't find a hotel, he
ended up sleeping at bus stops; A picturesque
scene captured by Manu during his journey
“Completing this journey deepened my
confidence. Outwardly, I embrace flair,
akin to an actor on stage, valuing life as a
performance. Yet, privately, I am quiet and
introspective, finding fascination in the
smallest of things.”
The 26-year-old took on the challenge to
break free from mediocrity, regardless of
success or failure. “The decision, born from a
spontaneous ‘shower’ idea, left no room for
alternatives; it was the only path I considered.”
While life has returned to its routine,
Manu has come to appreciate the value in
the mundane. “It's perfectly acceptable
to establish a routine that aligns with
your preferences and not adhere strictly
to it. Allowing yourself some flexibility
while maintaining the objectives you
In the initial four hours, his sports shoes
suffered a setback as he reached Old Klang
Road. “While crossing a pedestrian bridge,
my right foot snagged on a step, causing
the entire flap of my shoe to tear open. I
made a pitstop at a nearby Decathlon store
to purchase a new pair of shoes.”
During his journey, when he couldn't find a
hotel, he ended up sleeping at bus stops.
“One particularly frightening moment
was navigating the road to Seremban
from Mantin in complete darkness during
an ungodly hour. The old road, bordered
by jungle on both sides, instilled fear due
to the limited visibility, worsened by an
unreliable phone signal. However, amid
the anxiety, a positive note emerged as the
night sky unfolded with remarkable clarity.
Witnessing the entire constellation of Orion
became an unforgettable
experience for me.”
A key takeaway from
the journey, he notes, is
realising that something
concludes only when
you choose to end it, be
it a specific task or any
endeavour.
“When you commit to
something, it only comes
to an end when you choose
to stop. For example, if you
decide to make exercise a
routine and suddenly feel
like quitting, the key is to
push yourself, to at least try. Don't give
up. Even if your performance is subpar,
pushing yourself beyond your limits is
where most of the growth happens,” he
explains.
In the final eight hours, fatigue prevented
him from straightening his right leg.
“Despite several offers of a lift from kind
individuals, I insisted on completing the
journey on my own; that was the essence
of the challenge. The moment I arrived at
A’Famosa, the first thing I did was sit down
and revel in the sense of accomplishment.”
Having lost 2kg, Manu plans another
challenge in February or March, aiming to
surpass his previous limits. Undecided on
the destination, he contemplates walking
to Penang or Singapore, recognising the
importance of physical training.
Manu, whose journey thread on X went
from 2.1 million to 2.5 million views
(at press time), works freelance and is
currently in a job transition.
“I’ve applied to 200-300 positions,
received several offers, and am now
exploring roles that align with my talents.
Currently working on a mythological
fiction series of novels, I excel in public
speaking and pay meticulous attention to
detail. However, I prioritise roles aligned
with my values and am taking time to
assess job offers.”

WARRIOR
Dr KS Beh’s vision: a healthy future for Vita Life Sciences
78
The Country Head at Vita Life Sciences (Malaysia
and Singapore) Ltd., a leading Australian-owned
healthcare company, Dr KS Beh is a seasoned
professional with over 15 years of experience in
the health and wellness industry.
In her position, she plays a key role in overseeing
critical aspects of the company's operations in the
Southeast Asia region. This includes responsibilities
such as formulating business and sales strategy, as
well as driving big data and information technology
development for the Group.
Under her adept leadership, the entities within
Beh’s portfolio have demonstrated exceptional
performance, significantly contributing to the
overall revenue of the Group. Her strategic
approach and management skills, based on
key principles, are instrumental in achieving
remarkable results for the company.
Talent development is a cornerstone of her
approach. “Within the organisation, I focus on
nurturing potential leaders through mentoring
and providing training,” she explains.
Adaptability is another crucial aspect. She
encourages her team to embrace change and
stay ahead of the industry curve by generating
new ideas and actively participating in product
development initiatives.
A goal-oriented mindset is integral to her
leadership style. “I emphasise the importance
of setting clear goals and defining strategies to
achieve them. Moreover, I empower my team to
collaboratively work towards these goals and
ensure that achievements are duly rewarded.”
In the past five years, Beh significantly boosted
the business with double-digit turnover growth
each year, thanks to effective strategies and
initiatives.
These include marketing strategies aimed at
maximising outreach, encompassing a diverse
range of channels such as Above The Line
(ATL) platforms like radio, billboards, and print.
Additionally, she has successfully navigated the
ever-evolving digital landscape by leveraging
social media, including emerging platforms
such as TikTok, XHS, and Lemon8.
Furthermore, on-ground activities strategically
conducted in stores, concourse areas, and
corporate settings have played a significant role
in expanding the company's market presence
and ensuring sustained financial success.

Another factor contributing to the success is the emphasis on
product innovation. This involves consistently leading market
trends and being at the forefront of introducing novel products,
such as Turmeric in 2015.
Beh also spearheaded CHARGE-UP, the first mental wellness
series in the country, addressing rising concerns about mental
health with innovative solutions launched in 2021. This series
focuses on nurturing mental resilience, cognitive function, sleep
quality, stress relief, and more.
She firmly believes that supplements are for everyone, not just
the elderly or those with health issues.
Her mission: revolutionise supplement intake into an enjoyable
experience, transforming the brand’s identity with an
unwavering commitment to health and positivity.
“We favour a sustainable approach, advocating for selling
products based on customers’ health needs identified through
free health tests actively conducted. This customer-centric
strategy aims for long-term relationships rather than short-term
gains.”
Counterfeiting, especially rampant in e-commerce, poses a
significant challenge. To combat this, stringent quality control
measures are implemented, and consumers are educated on
making genuine choices. Additionally, hologram scanning is
encouraged to verify product authenticity.
Economic challenges and fluctuating raw material prices
present further obstacles. “The response involves diversifying
the product portfolio to encompass a range of price points and
cater to diverse consumer segments, ensuring resilience in the
face of economic uncertainties.”
This is achieved through creative formatting and packaging,
aiming to bring an element of fun to the process of
incorporating supplements into one's daily routine.
Establishing strategic partnerships and alliances is a key
approach to tap into new customer bases, Beh notes. This
involves collaborations with co-branding partners, participation
in corporate events, and securing positions as the official
nutrition partner for sports associations.
Similar to any professional, she faces challenges in the business
landscape. Competitive market dynamics pose a hurdle, with
rivals resorting to deep discounts and generous freebies.
Despite a busy schedule, Beh prioritises education, earning a
Doctor of Business Administration (DBA) with a specialisation
in marketing. She also completed the Harvard School Online
Certificate Program in Global Business.
Beh envisions the future trajectory of Vita Life Sciences'
presence in Malaysia and Singapore, along with upcoming plans.
These include chatbot customer service, a money-back
guarantee for trust, global expansion, using TikTok Live
for younger audiences, especially in Malay markets, and
introducing sports products tailored for athletes and active
individuals.

company intensifies its commitment to CSR, channelling resources to
uplift communities and foster a healthier, happier world.
Beh advocates for the promotion of both physical and mental
wellness. She notes that true health extends beyond the absence of
diseases and encompasses overall well-being.
“Achieving a fulfilling life involves being physically active and
emotionally happy, acknowledging the interconnected nature of
physical and mental aspects in the pursuit of optimal health.”
The dedication to promoting wellness has had a positive impact on
employee engagement, retention, and overall productivity.
“Initiatives supporting this commitment include offering
complimentary access to gym facilities to encourage physical activity,
organising a Sports day to foster teamwork, implementing a silent

work and enhance productivity, and providing insurance and health
cards to alleviate financial stress associated with healthcare costs.”
The company promotes work-life balance and mental health support
for its employees through various initiatives, such as flexible working

of a quiet room.
CROSS-BORDER
LEADERSHIP
Beh’s effective prioritisation and
management of responsibilities
spanning Malaysia and Singapore play
a pivotal role in her accomplishments.
Strategic alignment: By aligning
the objectives of both entities, Beh
facilitates resource-sharing while
tailoring approaches to accommodate
each location's distinct market

Empowerment: Beh empowers local
teams to take ownership, emphasising
clear objectives and granting authority

Clear communication: Regular online

to maintaining team alignment with
organisational goals, fostering idea

Personally, Beh prioritises physical activity by frequently visiting the
gym, underscoring the paramount importance of health in her life.
She also incorporates VitaHealth’s Turmercare into her routine – a

Chinese floral prints merge with Western materials for a unique,
sophisticated aesthetic in Shanghai Tang’s latest collection
90
Shanghai Tang's newest women's line serves as
a vibrant homage to the captivating artistry of
Yang Liping's 'Moonlight Dance' performance in
the enchanting landscape of Lijiang, China. This
collection skillfully encapsulates the effervescent
and fluid movements that define the performance,
translating them into a series of dynamic and
elegant fashion pieces that embody the grace,
spirit, and cultural richness of this renowned dance.
The collection combines Chinese hand drawn
floral prints and Western fabrication, revealing a
distinctive aesthetic with a sophisticated quality.
In both contemporary and traditional Chinese art,
dance has been portrayed in paintings, calligraphy,
music and poetry for centuries. The freedom of
dance is the heart of the collection, and through
traditional dyeing techniques, expert craftsmen
have created floral prints in moonlight yellow
and midnight blue on mulberry silk, resulting in
beautifully free flowing ensembles.
The men's collection continues to honour Shanghai
Tang's rich brand legacy, which reflects the
evolution of contemporary Chinese fashion. It
remains rooted in the brand's timeless narrative of
iconic Chinese silhouettes while infusing elements
of novelty and whimsy into traditional sartorial
expressions.
Equally fascinating is the 'Reunion' range. This
particular collection thoughtfully weaves a central
motif, encapsulating the spirit of togetherness and
the shared moments of delight, ensuring that each
design reflects the intricate tapestry of love and
unity that defines these cherished family reunions.
Known for its intricate embroidery, Shanghai
Tang reimagines this craftsmanship in relaxed,
comfortable styles that exude elegance.
Noteworthy among the collection's standout
pieces is a double-stitched Mandarin collar
wool jacket with frog buttons, artfully crafted to
resemble denim and infuse a Western flair into the
traditional garment.
The infusion of Western aesthetics becomes even
more evident where a graceful marriage of styles
emerges, uniting the timeless Mandarin collar and
distinctive architectural sleeves in a captivating
dance of cultural threads and sartorial mastery.

than a hybrid solution. It is fitted with two Separately
Excited Synchronous Motors (SSMs). The front electric motor
produces 190kW / 365 Nm, with the rear motor delivering
360kW / 710 Nm. In performance terms, this equates to an
internal combustion engine of 430kW (584 hp) with 900Nm
of torque. In terms of acceleration, Spectre achieves 0-60mph
in 4.4 seconds (0-100km/h in 4.5 seconds).
In establishing an appropriate range for Spectre, the marque
first engaged with clients, to understand their requirements. The
confirmed range of 530km (329 miles) WLTP goes beyond these
requirements, confirming that Spectre fits perfectly into the lifestyle
of Rolls-Royce clients, who have an average of more than seven cars
in their garage to choose from for any occasion, and who drive an
average of 5,100km in their current Rolls-Royce per year.
Charge time from 10-80% is 34 minutes using a 195 kW (DC)
fast charger: this will also produce sufficient charge for 100km
in around nine minutes. Spectre is equipped with Active Lane
Centring and Adaptive Cruise Control simultaneously.
Spectre has a 102kWh lithium-ion battery, made using cobalt
and lithium from strictly controlled sources in Australia, Morocco
and Argentina: the battery cells are produced using 100% green
electricity. It has been extensively tested in temperatures ranging
from -40°C to +50°C: Spectre’s on-board thermal management
system maintains an optimum operating temperature at all times.

LIVING
Harnessing rain for a greener tomorrow
110
TROPICANA MAGAZINE
Rainwater harvesting is a globally popular sustainable
practice in buildings, addressing water scarcity and
promoting environmental conservation by collecting and
storing rainwater for later use. This innovative approach
aids water conservation, lessens reliance on traditional
sources, and mitigates stormwater runoff impacts.
One of the key components of rainwater harvesting
in buildings is the installation of a collection system.
Typically, this system includes gutters, downspouts, and
pipes that direct rainwater from the roof to a storage tank.
The tank, above or below ground, varies in capacity based
on building size and local rainfall patterns. To ensure
usability for activities like irrigation or flushing toilets, the
system includes filters to remove debris. While groundlevel
collection is possible, it is less common.
Rainwater harvesting in buildings offers multifaceted
benefits. It reduces demand on traditional water supplies,
alleviates pressure on stormwater drainage systems, and
provides a naturally soft alternative for domestic use,
reducing dependence on treated municipal water.
From an environmental standpoint, rainwater harvesting
promotes sustainability by conserving water resources
and reducing the energy required for water treatment
and distribution. It also encourages a more decentralised
approach to water management, empowering individual
buildings and communities to play a role in securing their
water supply.
111
Needless to say, rainwater harvesting in buildings
aligns with sustainable living, showcasing a proactive
step towards water conservation and environmental
responsibility.

At Tropicana Gardens, located within the prime neighbourhood
of Tropicana Indah, rainwater harvesting is employed for its
beneficial purposes.
During the construction phase, stormwater management
measures were implemented in accordance with the Department
of Irrigation & Drainage MSMA (Urban Storm Water Management)
requirements. As an integral component of the development
plan, a rainwater harvesting tank is incorporated, intended for
utilisation in landscape irrigation purposes.
Additionally, the recycling of fire system test water contributes
to sustainability efforts, specifically for the sprinkler and wet
riser systems, fostering a more resilient and eco-conscious built
environment.
The integration of rainwater collection and recycling is a
fundamental aspect of the water articulation system. Gathered
from the roof, the harvested rainwater serves primarily for
irrigation and cleaning applications.
The abundant landscaping relies predominantly on the
rainwater for irrigation, leading to a notable reduction of at
least 50 percent in potable water usage in communal spaces.
This practice not only minimises stormwater runoff during intense
rainfall, preventing strain on the current drainage infrastructure
but also introduces an environmentally friendly solution.

responsibility and self-sufficiency
